SOPHIE’S DREAM FLIGHT A STOCKSBRIDGE mum has paid tribute to charity Dreamflight after her daughter was taken on a once in a lifetime trip to Florida. Sophie Dobson, 12, suffered from multiple illnesses and was left with brain damage, spinal issues, severe anxiety and chronic fatigue. The Pain Team at Sheffield Children’s Hospital nominated her for a trip to Florida with Dreamflight after going through ocular issues, a spinal cyst removal, bacterial meningitis, mobility problems and constant pain. And now her mum Debbie is looking to give something back to the charity with a coffee morning at St Matthias Church in February. Dreamflight aims to give children like Sophie two weeks of enjoyment and opportunities away from home, to build their confidence and independence which has been affected by illness. Activities included experiencing all the Disney parks, Hollywood Disney Studios and Universal Studios, swimming with dolphins, and going on the rides, which was Sophie’s favourite part. Looking back on her holiday, Sophie said: “This has been a once-

in-a-lifetime experience for children like me. It’s been brilliant. “I really like travelling now and I think I might become an air hostess so I can travel more. There are 12 regional groups with 16 children in each, accompanied by a Group Leader, a doctor, physiotherapist, three nurses and two non-medical escorts. Sophie was taken care of by nurses Jo and Hannah from Sheffield Children’s Hospital and a number of volunteers from both the UK and America. Paralympic champion, Liz Johnson was among the volunteers supporting the children, having travelled to Florida as a Dreamflight child 19 years earlier. Debbie said: “Sophie finds some days harder than others but it has helped meeting the other children who understand the struggles that she goes through every day. “It’s an amazing charity. What they give to the children is out of this world. I just want to give a bit back. The coffee and cake morning takes place at St Matthias Church on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge on Saturday February 18 between 10am and 2pm.

OUGHTIBRIDGE residents say they have major concerns about traffic problems resulting from a proposed new housing development. One of the residents, Terry Barrow, has started a petition and it currently has 244 signatures. The group will be in the Oughtibridge area on Saturday in an effort to raise awareness of the issues and get more signatures. The concerns centre around the potential impact of a housing development at Platts Lane. If the scheme for 34 new houses is given approval, they say that a lack of consideration for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders would see them face added dangers trying to cross the narrow bridge adjacent to the site. Locally the location is already known as a traffic danger spot but any additional traffic generated by the housing development could bring added pressures and hazards for non-vehicle users. Terry has created an online petition asking Sheffield City Council to take into account safety issues arising from the planning application and said: “In order to give pedestrian access to the village it is being proposed that the railway bridge is reduced to a single lane, using lights, to incorporate a footpath. “We are concerned about the impact that would have on traffic throughout the village and with large developments planned all along the Stocksbridge Valley it is only going to get worse! “So we are asking the council to properly assess the cumulative impact of these developments on the village, specifically the ability of Station and Oughtibridge Lanes to cope if the lights go ahead, the effect that backed up traffic may have on the main arterial route into Sheffield, and the safety and siting of the existing zebra crossing on Low Road. “We call for long term, safe solutions including a separate foot/cycle bridge over the railway and a light controlled crossing on Low Road. You can sign the petition at https://www.change. org/p/sheffield-city-council-let-s-make-oughtibridge-safer-for-pedestrians

Misconduct found following custody death at Ecclesfield Police Station

Burger meal and a pint for £5 Regular £4.95 AN Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation into the actions of a South Yorkshire Police custody detention officer, prior to the death of man while in custody at Ecclesfield Police Station, found a case to answer for misconduct. Neil Budziszewski, 42, died in South Yorkshire Police custody on May 3 2013. An IPCC investigation found cases to answer for misconduct for two sergeants who may have failed to complete risk assessments and custody records properly, and for possible failures in their actions concerning medical assessments and a shift change handover. Following a misconduct meeting held by South Yorkshire Police in 2014 one of the sergeants received a final written warning and the other a written warning. However, following the inquest into Mr Budziszewski’s death

concerns were raised about the actions of custody detention officer (CDO) Gary Houlton. The IPCC decided to reopen its investigation to focus on the CDO’s specific actions. This investigation concluded that there was evidence that he may have failed to carry out appropriate checks and not complete documentation accurately. A police staff disciplinary hearing, held by South Yorkshire Police in June 2016, found this amounted to misconduct and CDO Houlton received a written warning. IPCC Commissioner Carl Gumsley said: “It became apparent during the inquest that there was evidence which had not been as thoroughly investigated by the IPCC as it should have been. Having not been involved with this investigation previously, I was able to look objectively at the evidence given at inquest

and the original IPCC investigation. “Whilst the original investigation had found evidence of failings by South Yorkshire Police and individual officers, it was apparent that the specific actions of CDO Houlton had not, in my view, been fully investigated. “It was important for me to consider carefully what impact this information might have had on the original investigation. As a result I decided to re-open the investigation and look specifically at the actions of the custody detention officer; subsequently misconduct was proven and the investigation has now concluded. “I have apologised to the family of Mr Budziszewski. I also requested an internal review to identify any organisational learning with the aim of avoiding such incidences in the future.”

Churches join forces for Week of Prayer THE Churches Together in Stocksbridge and District (CTSD) joined in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which is celebrated throughout the world each year during the same dates, using eight study sessions and a Service prepared by the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. These sessions and the service are provided for worldwide use by a different country each year and include suggestions for action. This year, as it is 500 years since the Reformation of the Churches was started by the German, Martin Luther, 500 years ago, Germany was asked to provide the materials for a theme of crossing barriers and reconciliation. During the week eight meetings were held in the homes of members of different churches and led by a member of a different church and the final service held in St John’s Church, Deepcar. CTSD is composed of nine churches, covering six denominations. Besides joining together for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity they also we run The Bridge Community Shop and during Lent have simple lunches together at which they raise funds for charities On Maunday Thursday they have a joint service in Green Moor Church after which the Easter cross is lit. On Good Friday they hold a witness on the shopping precinct and during this last year have at least seven car loads of aid to the Sheffield Branch of Families Relief - a national organisation giving help wherever it is needed in the world including Great Britain. But recently they have returned

Countryside Explained YORKSHIRE’S countryside will feature in an illustrated talk ‘The Countryside Explained’ by Chris Tomson, a professional nature conservation adviser and amateur photographer, in Penistone on February 21. The talk takes us on a tour of the British countryside showing how the landscape has been managed by the hand of man since the last ice age 10,000 years ago until the present day. The history of the countryside is fascinating and is reflected in the landscape we see today, it’s just a question of being able to read the signs. This talk will show us what to look for and includes a look at wildlife, farming, woodlands, geology, archaeology, history, conservation, tourism and the National Parks and considers the future of our countryside. Chris Tomson is keen to look at forming a Penistone and District Countryside Society if there is enough interest, with regular talks from local and visiting speakers and field trips, so if you are interested come along to the ‘Countryside Explained’ at St Andrews Church, Penistone at 7.30pm on Tuesday February 21 or contact Mr Chris Tomson on 0795 821 3643 for details. Admission is ÂŁ2 to cover the costs of the hall.

from Syria and, at the end of last year, they took aid to a refugee camp in Greece. CTSD was formed over 50 years ago by the then Catholic Priest, Father Callaghan, and continues to meet. In the front of the picture is a cross formed by at least one stone from each church grounds. These had previously been placed in a line to form a barrier and during the service reshaped into the cross - a physical representation of crossing barriers and reconciliation.

TROUBLE GETTING IN AND OUT OF MY CHAIR? NOT ANY MORE! My new lift and rise recliner from Barkers has proved a life-saver! Let’s face it, there is very little to recommend old age and one of the most irritating problems I faced was the strain both of lowering myself to sit down comfortably or - worse still - having to lever myself up out of the chair and to a standing position. I became aware quite suddenly that something that used to cause me no concern at all was an increasing worry. I hated asking for help and drawing attention to myself. IT may be cold outside but there is plenty of gardening you can do with your feet up inside at this time of year. Now is the best time to see the overall structure and shape of your garden which means you can assess what you already have and plan on how to improve it. You don’t have to spend a fortune and your garden can be any size whether in the country or in a town. Have a good look through the seed catalogues for summer flowers you can grow from scratch and flick through gardening books and manuals for ideas and easy to implement garden tips. If you’re thinking of growing your own fruit and veg then it’s a great time to plant seeds indoors for some early crops such as lettuces, summer brassicas such as cabbages and cauliflowers, spinach and salad onions. A job for January is to get seed beds ready and now is also the time to prune currant and gooseberry bushes. A simple garden solution for January is to bring colour to container evergreens. It’s a good idea to invest in a basic collection of container evergreens – box, conifer, holly and

bay – that you can customise through the seasons by adding bedding plants around the base of each bush. You can create a mix of containers that look great grouped together or scattered through the garden with a variety of colourful plants decorating them such as white cyclamen for winter, lavender blue pansies in spring and white and pink daisies in summer. Another plant great for instant winter-spring colour and perfect for containers, window boxes and borders is the Primula. The majority bloom in the spring, but they have been known to flower through mild winters. There is a wide range of colours available from bright yellow to pastel reds and blues and they can grow in most soil types and be planted in sun and semi shade. They can be used very effectively in bedding schemes with tulips and other winter-spring bedding plants or planted alone in blocks of colour. When planting Primula in containers, use multi-purpose compost and ensure that they never dry out – and remember to dead head the plants regularly as this will encourage a longer flowering period.

Having a Pre–Paid Funeral Plan

Setting up a Pre–Paid Funeral Plan

Co-op Funeralcare pre-paid plans

Having a pre-paid plan in place takes away the financial and emotional burden from your family at the time when they are least able to cope.

This is very easy and completion of your plan application is very simple and straightforward.

These are already exceptionally well priced, but unlike other providers, their plans INCLUDE ALL THIRD PARTY COSTS AND DISBURSEMENTS, so there will never be any more to pay for the services included in your Plan.

There are a variety of plans and payment alternatives to suit everyone. There are no age or health restrictions and no hidden costs. This can all be done in the comfort of your own home by arranging a meeting with either of us.

Peacefully in hospital on 23rd January 2017, aged 62 years, son of the late Nolan and Edith Dawson. The funeral will take place at St James’ Church, Midhopestones on Thursday 9th February at 2pm followed by interment in the Churchyard.

fairtrade fortnight

The Fairtrade Group would like to draw the attention of Look Local readers to Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place from February 27 to March 12. As Stocksbridge has the honour of being a Fairtrade Town we hope that local people will join us in celebrating this event. There will be free Fairtrade coffee, tea and biscuits upstairs in the library on the morning of February 28 and prizes to be won in a raffle on March 4 at the Co-op. We also plan a competition for school pupils with lots of prizes. If any local group is arranging a Fairtrade event of their own we would be pleased to hear about it. Fairtrade is what it says it is – trade that is fair to both the producer and the consumer. That’s something we can all support. Contact Margaret on 0114 2882393 or Joan on 0114 2888399. Many thanks, SCCG Trustees

Post-Truth to those without power Barry King takes me to task in LL940 for not concentrating on the positive aspects of David Ogle's letter re priorities for 2017. He seems upset I'd rather comment instead on matters from last October. I make no apologies for doing so. Many people these days have very short memories when it comes to calling out comments like those. Intriguing to note Mr King also finds the labelling of local 'small good cause groups' (quite an informed choice of terminology there, if I may say so Mr King) and organisations in such a way as amusing - the thin end of a much bigger wedge perhaps. Still don't know who these groups are by the way. To assure Mr King, I wish David and his group of volunteers every success in fulfilling their aspirations for community improvements in 2017, especially in terms of local CCTV provision could've done with some in place at Angram Bank recreation ground late last year as it happens. However, to further assure Mr King, there is one point in the letter he mentions that I did take note of, that being the suggestion that the Angram Bank Children’s Centre is facing closure. As I am sure many other readers were also, I was quite alarmed to read this. News to me. After all, it only opened a few years back and provides a great service for many kids and families. Rather than take this at face value (something we all do far too readily with stuff such as this perhaps), I thought it best to check with our West Ecclesfield councillors. I contacted all three: Cllr. Booker (UKIP) and Cllrs. Hurst and Sykes (Labour), and I'd to thank all three for getting back in touch. All three have confirmed quite clearly, that there are no plans afoot to close the Angram Bank Children’s Centre. Pleased as I am to see this, I do wonder from where Mr Ogle got the information to suggest otherwise some clarification would be helpful on this.

Given his obvious concern, perhaps asking as I did his local councillors, would've been a better bet. I am sure they would've reassured him also. He would then have had no need to suggest to readers of LL, maybe generating a degree of worry and concern by doing so, that the facility is to be lost. We all get our wires crossed from time to time, or are we finally seeing the arrival of the 'Post-Truth' era within our area - a worrying feature of national and global life in recent times? Whereby saying anything in order to elicit a response/result is acceptable, and we'll worry about the basis/consequences of any comments thereafter. An example of this phenomenon would be the promised £350m extra a week for the NHS as championed during the Brexit debate, if we voted to leave - we are all still waiting on this (over £10bn owing since the vote and counting...). As long as it gets the 'result' that is desired, then 'post-truth' is seen simply as a means to an end in some quarters. #FakeNews. Perhaps we should count our lucky stars that, at present at least, we can gain relatively easy access to the truth. As in terms of the Children's Centre, via a simple enquiry to councillors - they are able to provide the 'alternative facts' that might seek to reassure and allay our concerns. Yours faithfully, Richard Fletcher, Angram Bank

Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies. A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry 16:50 and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of

Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18thcentury England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”, as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heartshaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. No matter what you choose to do this Valentine’s Day, be sure to let the one you love know how much they mean to you in your own special way!

Ring the extra time cup hero for Church PENISTONE Church FC beat Clipstone 3-2 in the fourth round of the NCEL League Cup on Wednesday. Clipstone took an early lead through Jacob Lowe before Lewis Dickinson equalised after the break for Church. Max Curzon looked to have put Clipstone through with his goal on 68 minutes but Brett Lovell forced the game into extra time after finding the target with four minutes left. In extra time, it was Andy Ring who was the hero, tucking the ball home with two minutes left, avoiding the lottery of a penalty shootout.

After the game Manager Ian Richards said: “I’m really pleased with the outcome, we got the win we deserved, if it hadn’t been for their goal keeper we’d have won that in 90 minutes, he was by far their best player and he prolonged the game for the 120 minutes. “There were a lot of positives for us, I’m really pleased Ringy (Andrew Ring) got the winner he was excellent tonight, the way he led that line was first class, I’m really pleased for Jack Moore that he assisted, coming from an eight week layoff , he’s come through it without any adverse reaction to his knee.”

Committed week for Footpath Runners GARY Dean of Penistone Footpath Runners made an epic four-hour solo trek on public transport and on foot along the A58 to represent the club at the Northern Cross Country Championships, held at Knowsley Safari Park on Saturday. He finished 586th in 69.24 in thick mud.

Business as usual at Tigers Mirror SHEFFIELD co-promoter Damien Bates insists it’s business as usual at Owlerton - despite taking over Premiership club Leicester. Bates has been unveiled as the shock new man in charge at Beaumont Park, keeping the Lions on track after a financial crisis last season threatened their future. But Bates says he’s just as excited about the Sheffield team as he is

by his new challenge in the East Midlands. “This is an exciting time,” he said. “And in no way will this have any impact on my work at Sheffield. “In fact, I’m looking at it to benefit Sheffield. Leicester is a purpose built speedway facility and will be available for my Sheffield riders to go along and practice as and when, it’s great to have that facility.

“Sheffield is a very well run club now. I have good people working alongside me in Julie Reading, Pete Mole, Marc Bates and of course Eric Boocock and it’s great to have Simon Stead on board as team manager. “We are a management team at Sheffield and that’s what has enabled me to take on Leicester. I’m looking forward to helping both clubs be winners this year!”

Junior rugby sides in action THREE of Stocksbridge Rugby’s youth sides got a run out at the weekend with the team of seven and eight-yearolds giving a good account of themselves against a well drilled Barnsley side. Liam Scott and Tommy Siddall shared the man of the match award. The nine and ten-yearolds faced Thorne and battled to a draw. Jack James was voted man of the match for his defensive effort and work rate. All that travelled agreeing that the Piglets had done brilliant in a mixed team with new friends in what was another great display and step forward in their rugby.

BAILDON stuck to their game plan in their win on Saturday, restricting Stocksbridge to scrappy ball and capitalising on forced errors. It was Bridge who made the brighter start, making progress with the pack until a penalty was awarded after a tackler killed the ball at the breakdown. Bowskill dutifully opened the scoring. Baildon responded by keeping the away side in their own territory, reaping the rewards of a series of penalties conceded by Stocksbride as pressure was applied at the breakdown. Before Stocksbridge were able to threaten with the ball again Baildon had accrued a 9-3 lead. Feeling the pressure at the wrong end of the field, play was being forced until a stray pass went to ground, on which Baildon were the first to react. A kick through found the space and the supporting player could not be stopped so close to the line. As the ball flew through the uprights Stocksbridge found themselves headed into half time thirteen points behind and needing a response. And respond they did, with the forwards bullying Baildon around the ruck area. Unable to halt the onslaught Sam Whitaker (sponsored by The Business Hair Salon) drove forward and stretched to find the line. A narrowly missed conversion meant two scores were still required. As two opportunities at goal were turned down with no reward at the line out Stocksbridge again began to force their play. An attempted off load was plucked from the air by the Baildon stand off who hacked the ball deep into Stocksbridge territory, which was cleared into touch by Pat O’Leary. Baildon soon afterward out muscled some weak fringe defence to increase their lead with a second try. With their hearts in their mouths the Stocksbridge boys gleefully watched the conversion fall short to restrict the deficit to 13 points. Desperate for the win Stocksbridge made a real game of it, with starters Adam Frith and Liam Roebuck reintroduced with a noticeable impact. Asserting their dominance once more in the pack, the ball was agonisingly spilt forwards feet from the line on two occasions. Turning over scrum possession provided Frith (sponsored by Brian Mills Decorating Services) the chance to snipe and score a try. The successful conversion meant that Stocksbridge would take a losing bonus point on the day. Stocksbridge were unable to get out of their half for the remaining moments of the game, as the scores finished 21-15. Ricky Rowett (sponsored by The Gentleman Fox Barbershop) was awarded the Man of the Match for his tireless effort with ball in hand and in the tackle area. Bridge will take pride from their response securing the bonus point, which could be decisive in their bid to stay in the division. A good team performance from the development squad saw them beat their Mosborough opponents 12-10. Man of the Match Jordan Fletcher, Wayne Hirst and Ricky Christopherson all managed to get their names on the scoreboard as they raced into a 12-0 half time lead. Mosborough fought back after the break but Stocksbridge held out to take the win.
