TaTa aGRee To Sell TATA Steel UK has signed a definitive sale agreement to sell its Speciality Steels business – including Stocksbridge - to Liberty House Group for a total consideration of ÂŁ100 million. The sale agreement covers several South Yorkshire-based assets including the electric arc steelworks and bar mill at Rotherham, the steel purifying facility in Stocksbridge and a mill in Brinsworth as well as service centres in Bolton and Wednesbury, UK, and in Suzhou and Xi’an, China. Speciality Steels directly employs about 1,700 people making steels for the aerospace, automotive and the oil and gas industries. Bimlendra Jha, CEO of Tata Steel UK, said: “This is good news for Speciality Steels and for Tata Steel’s core business in the UK. For Speciality Steels, which is largely independent of our European strip products supply chain, this is an important step forward in securing a future for the business under new ownership. Today’s news also marks another important step forward in realising a more sustainable future for our Port Talbot-based supply chain in the UK.â€? Mr Jha added: “Like our former Scunthorpe-based Long Products
business which we sold last year, we will be handing over a business which has been transformed following difficult decisions to restructure and re-focus on highervalue markets. Employees, trade unions and the management team have worked incredibly hard at Speciality Steels to improve its performance and I’m delighted to say that the business is now on an improvement track which will enable it to thrive in the future. Completion of the transaction remains subject to the receipt of necessary regulatory clearances. The parties will also be working to complete consultation with employees and the transfer of supplier and customer contracts. Tata Steel and Liberty House Group have worked constructively together to finalise the agreement. Tata Steel UK is currently consulting with its employees on number of proposals that would structurally reduce risks and help secure a more sustainable future for its wider UK business. It is also in discussions with the British Steel Pension Scheme trustee and the Pension Regulator to develop a structural solution for its UK pension scheme in the coming months.
Angela Smith MP welcomed the news. She said: “Today’s news that Liberty has come to a formal arrangement to purchase Speciality Steels is great news for workers in south Yorkshire and beyond. Speciality Steels employs some 1700 people locally and today’s announcement means that for the foreseeable future at least these jobs are now secure. “Liberty’s mix of companies represents a good match for Speciality Steels and the company has promised investment to make sure it can remain at the top end of global steel making. “The purchase will make Liberty one of the largest steel and engineering employers in the UK, with more than 4,000 workers at plants located across Britain’s industrial heartlands. “This will mean South Yorkshire remains at the centre of high value steel making and that high value jobs remain in the area. It is also a deal welcomed by the Trade Unions. “I look forward to working with the new owners to make sure Speciality Steels has a secure future and will keep a keen eye on developments, especially as far as investment in the company is concerned.

Batteries fitted in Oxspring homes OXSPRING has been chosen as the place to trial home batteries, connected to solar panels. Moixa, Northern Powergrid and Energise Barnsley have teamed up in a ground-breaking trial to demonstrate how clusters of home batteries can increase capacity on the electricity network and enable more homes to install solar panels. Moixa Smart Batteries will be installed in 40 homes and linked in a virtual power plant in the first project to study how this solution can reduce peak solar output onto the electricity networks when there is low local demand and save customers millions in the cost of running the UK’s power network. Electricity distributor Northern Powergrid is funding installation of the batteries in Oxspring, in properties owned by Barnsley Council and managed by Berneslai Homes. Community energy company Energise Barnsley has rolled out solar to homes in the area but came up against some network constraints in the village which meant that five houses could not be connected within the timescales of the project. The trial will include all 30 homes in the housing estate with solar PV panels plus 10 others without. Simon Daniel, CEO of Moixa, said: “Batteries will allow the electricity system to support much higher levels of low-carbon renewable power and increase UK energy independence. By managing clusters of home batteries in a virtual power plant and allowing homeowners to use more of their solar energy, thereby exporting less, we believe we can significantly reduce peak solar generation output onto the network. This will allow more homes to go solar without imposing new costs on network operators. “Solar homes with batteries can halve their electricity bills, and this solution will become
POWER AT HOME: How the Moixa batteries look installed in homes increasingly popular as costs of storage and PV fall. We are working closely with Northern Powergrid and this project will deliver insights to develop incentives which we hope will allow us to roll out solar plus storage to tens of thousands of homes in their region, by creating a business case for homeowners to invest and also by increasing the number of solar connections allowed on each substation.” The £250,000 trial will seek to demonstrate that the virtual power plant can reduce peak solar output onto the network sufficiently to enable panels to be installed on more homes using existing substations and cable networks. If successful, Northern Powergrid
believes UK network operators could save millions for customers by reducing the need to upgrade infrastructure, which will help ensure network-related charges on customers’ electricity bills remain good value. The trial will also feed into national design guidance for low voltage networks supplying housing estates. The first batteries were installed at the end of January and cost residents nothing. Solar panels typically cut electricity bills by up to 30% and batteries can add further savings of up to 20% by allowing residents to use free energy generated during the day at night. Moixa will manage the cluster of batteries to reduce peak generation
output onto Northern Powergrid’s local electricity network by storing solar electricity instead of exporting it to the grid. Its software includes ‘learning algorithms’ which respond to solar generation, electricity network needs and each user’s behaviour to maximise the benefits of storage. By linking the batteries in a virtual power plant Moixa will also be able to provide services that make the wider electricity grid more efficient, greener and cheaper to run, such as maintaining a stable frequency, so reducing the need for back-up power from coal, oil and gas. In the future, residents will also receive a share of income from Moixa for these grid services.

Tour makers wanted for Tour de Yorkshire WELCOME to Yorkshire are on the lookout for passionate and reliable volunteers to become Tour Makers at this year’s Tour de Yorkshire which finishes at Fox Valley, Stocksbridge. Tour Makers are the welcoming face of Yorkshire for the millions of spectators who travel to the county to witness the world’s best cyclists in action between 28-30 April, and are deployed right along the race route. As well as playing an important role in the race, being a Tour Maker gives people the chance to be close to the action and ensure the event passes off as smoothly and safely as possible.
Welcome to Yorkshire are inviting people to register their interest at letour.yorkshire.com/ tour-makers before Friday February 24. Details will then be provided on the five training sessions which are being held across the county. These sessions give Tour Makers all the information they need about the event, tutoring on their specific roles and an introduction to crowd management. Official Tour Maker uniforms will also be provided at all sessions. Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity said: “Tour Makers play an absolutely vital role in making the Tour de Yorkshire run as smoothly
Council faces seventh year of budget cuts THE ongoing underfunding of adult social care services across the country has led to Sheffield City Council proposing a three per cent precept on next year’s council tax bills. Sheffield City Council is also proposing a council tax increase of 1.99 per cent with an extra three per cent precept to fund adult social care, meaning most Sheffield properties will pay an extra 87p a week on their bills from April 2017. Sheffield City Council spends a significant proportion of its budget on adult social care this year and faces pressures of an ageing population, increased demands for services and increased costs. These pressures add up to ÂŁ12m in extra demands which is why the council is proposing to add the three per cent social care precept to council tax bills. The Council’s main source of Government funding is reducing by ÂŁ23m in 2017/2018. Grant reductions, plus demand and cost pressures mean it needs to identify savings of around ÂŁ40m of savings in 2017/2018. Councillor Ben Curran, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources at Sheffield City Council, said: “The 2017/18 budget will see an additional ÂŁ5.4m spent in supporting adult social care, helping to protect our most vulnerable people. It doesn’t go far enough to meeting the demands. We’ve called on the government to properly fund social care. It’s fallen on deaf ears so we’ve had to continue making difficult decisions in order to balance the books again.â€? The Council has had to find ÂŁ350m savings in total over the past six years, with a further ÂŁ40m needing to be saved in 2017/18. In 2017/18, the additional ÂŁ5.4m raised through the social care precept still leaves the Council needing to find a further ÂŁ35m, which includes a revenue support grant (RSG) cut of ÂŁ23m. The Council could also lose up to 225 jobs this year – it has to tell the Government how many job losses it may make in its annual HR1 form. As in previous years, the Council will take steps to minimise redundancies, such as offering Voluntary Severance and Voluntary Early Retirement schemes. The next stage of the budget setting process will be to put the proposed 2017/18 budget before Cabinet in February, before a final version is agreed at Full Council in March.
as it does and we’re grateful to every single one of them for the tremendous work they do. Their attitude and enthusiasm is second to none and we look forward to seeing many familiar faces taking part again in 2017. “As our race goes from strength-to-strength,
we are always looking for new Tour Makers to join the team and this year is no exception. It’s quick and easy to register your interest and the training days provide an ideal opportunity to learn some new skills and find out everything you need to know.

PLANS: The application for over 93 homes in Deepcar hasn’t been popular with everyone. A LOCAL action group are backing a group of neighbours in their fight against the Royd Farm ‘village’ proposal. Last month, a controversial housing development was unveiled by Hallam Land Management, an arm of Sheffield construction company Henry Boot. The scheme for over 93 dwellings is earmarked for fields next to Royd Farm between Bolsterstone and Deepcar. The green field site is next to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. The Royd Farm ‘village’ proposal has sparked opposition from local residents and many bombarded Sheffield City Council’s planning department with comments following a preliminary impact assessment process. Now, Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) have called a public meeting for those opposed to the
plans, whch will take place on Saturday February 25, 12 noon at The Castle Inn, Bolsterstone. Andrew Barton, of Carr Road, across the from the proposed Royd Farm ‘village’, commented: “This farmland simply is the wrong spot for such a large housing development. “It is adjacent to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. A development of this size would generate even more vehicle movements: it would make the Carr Road/ Manchester Road bottleneck even worse. My neighbours are of a similar view.” Formed in 2013, UDAG is a local body dedicated to protecting the unspoilt countryside to the north of Sheffield, near to the Peak District National Park. John Hesketh, former chair of Sheffield’s planning committee, is UDAG’s chairman. He told
Look Local: “Constructing a new village on a green field site next to the Green Belt extends urban development into the countryside around Sheffield. “This should be the last resort, not the first and I sometimes think the open country around Stocksbridge and Bolsterstone is the forgotten part of the city. “This proposal would destroy the rural character of this part of the Upper Don area. Sheffield has enough brownfield sites without eating into the countryside. “When a formal planning application arrives, UDAG will work with local residents, ramblers, environment groups and others to resist this large development.” To view the plans, visit https:// planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/ online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=neighbou rComments&keyVal=OJNVSIN Y0A500
Council apology over sex offender SHEFFIELD City Council have released a statement after a former employee in their education department was jailed for 16 years. Roger Dodds, 81 and of Cotswold Road, Hillsborough, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Friday February 3 to receive his sentence after admitting four counts of indecent assault on a man aged 16 or over and one count of indecent assault on a boy aged under 14 years in earlier court hearings. Dodds also abused colleagues while working for Sheffield City Council’s education department between 1975 and 1993. The council has been accused of failing to act and moved Dodds to a position working with schools after complaints. Jayne Ludlam, Executive Director for Children, Young People and Families, said: “We welcome the fact that Roger Dodds has finally been brought to justice, after so many years. “Our thoughts go out to his victims, whose bravery in coming forward has resulted in Dodds’ conviction and subsequent sentencing. “We are deeply sorry that Dodds committed these offences while working at Sheffield City Council decades ago. We are glad to see that, finally,
such cases of historic abuse are coming before the courts, justice is being done, and victims are having their voices heard. “Despite the fact that this happened more than a quarter of a century ago, we have accepted responsibility and would never defend the indefensible. “In 2008, a complaint of historic abuse was made to South Yorkshire Police regarding an ex-employee of Sheffield City Council. As a result, we at the council commissioned an in-depth, independent investigation into this allegation, which highlighted how things had happened at the council in the past. “By 2008 major changes had already occurred in policies, practices and procedures both at the council and in wider society, but we needed to know if there was anything more that we could learn. This independent report made recommendations, all of which have been implemented fully. “We tackle abuse head-on, provide care and support to victims, and do everything we can to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice. “We urge all victims of sexual abuse to come forward as soon as possible so they can get the support they need and offenders can be brought to justice.”

Stocksbridge firefighters attend medical emergencies SOUTH Yorkshire firefighters, including members of the Stocksbridge team, attended hundreds of medical emergencies last year, under the county’s first Emergency First Responder (EFR) scheme. The scheme is a joint initiative between South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) and Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) which sees firefighters called out to certain life-threatening incidents at the same time as an ambulance. On-call firefighters from Rossington, Stocksbridge and Dearne fire stations were sent to 358 medical emergencies in 2016, including cardiac arrests and incidents stating chest pains and breathing difficulties. At other incidents, firefighters have provided support and made the patient comfortable until the ambulance service arrived on scene. Training for firefighters who are part of the scheme includes basic life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and oxygen therapy. They are equipped with a kit which includes oxygen and an automated external defibrillator to help patients in a medical emergency such as a
heart attack, collapse or breathing difficulties. An EFR is dispatched at the same time as an ambulance and does not replace the usual emergency medical response from YAS. However, their location within the local community could mean they are nearer to the scene in those first critical minutes of a medical emergency, delivering life-saving care until an ambulance arrives. They also support and complement other volunteer community first responder schemes within South Yorkshire, ensuring the level of medical provision to local communities is supplemented. Emergency First Responders are only available for dispatch when staffing levels at their fire station allow and the scheme does not impact fire cover. Tony Carlin, Head of Emergency Response, said: “Just over a year into this scheme going live, our firefighters are already showing the incredible value they can add to their communities and the role we can play as a fire service in enhancing the work of our emergency service partners and volunteer community first responders. “Our role as a fire service will always be to protect our communi-
TEENAGER STABBED IN PENISTONE POLICE are appealing for information after a teenager was hospitalised with serious injuries after reportedly being stabbed in Penistone. The 19-year-old was attacked last Friday just before midnight outside the Spread Eagle pub. It is reported that he was assaulted by two men who are also believed to have also threatened another man who was with the victim. A police spokesperson said: “Police responded to reports that a 19-year-old man had been stabbed in the back with what is believed to have be a knife, outside the Spread Eagle Hotel by two men. “Another man, who attempted to help the 19-yearold, was also reportedly attacked by the men but did not sustain any injuries. “The two men have been described as around 20 years old. “The 19-year-old was taken to Northern General Hospital with serious injuries. Anyone with further information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 1342 of February 3.

Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise Businessman of the year’
Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working- order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service. He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe, who show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities to their father are now helping the successful window company build on the 36 years of trading.

Tributes were paid at the choir’s annual general meeting to Roger’s leadership. Highlights of his tenure include a singing trip to Amsterdam, an 80th anniversary concert at the Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield and an award-winning performance by the choir of a new jazz work by John Surman at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank.
Roger, who founded South Yorkshire Police’s underwater unit, said: “It’s been wonderful but I’m in my 70s and it’s time to tackle my bucket list, including foreign travel. I’ll still be singing from the back benches.” Deputy chairman Mike Bradshaw said: “Roger’s devoted leadership will be sorely missed by the choir, as will his dry sense of humour.”

ROYD Nursery Infant School are celebrating being awarded the prestigious ICT Mark by NAACE – the National Association of Advisors for Computers in Education. The ICT Mark recognises schools that demonstrate good use of technology to support teaching, learning and school administration, and Royd Nursery Infant is one of few education providers in South Yorkshire to receive the accolade. NAACE describes the ICT Mark as. “Deservedly popular with schools wanting to demonstrate both effective and mature use of technology. Schools use this award to drive change and many are, or go on to be, outstanding.”
In January 2017, Royd Nursery Infant was reviewed by NAACE, with the assessor noting that the school had “no weaknesses” when it came to ICT and that “school leaders are highly concerned to ensure that the education of the pupils is equipping them for life in a connected, technology-rich world.” Assistant head teacher, Mr Sly, commented: “Prior to gaining the award the school completed the NAACE self-review framework. “Before being able to apply for the award the school had to have met or exceeded the ICT Mark threshold in several aspects. “Once we believed that we met the thresholds, we were then al-
located an assessor who visited our school for a day to look at current practice and verify that the judgements were accurate.” Head teacher, Miss Jones, added: “This award highlights the school’s strong investment and adoption of ICT. Royd has an exciting curriculum that helps to prepare children for the future. “Our recent Ofsted highlighted that staff have high expectations of pupils that leads to children producing high quality work. We are delighted that NAACE acknowledge our high expectations within ICT and to have received this award.”

Sheffield school seeks heroes to help inspire a love of reading this World Book Day Windmill Hill Primary School launched their Book Explorers Club for pupils on World Book Day in March last year. This year, to celebrate the one year anniversary of the club, they are hoping to get some big names to complete their Caught Reading posters and help inspire a love of reading by showing that celebrities love reading too. Windmill Hill School head teacher, Joanne Grantham, explained: “Last year we were looking at new innovative ways to inspire a love of reading in our pupils, and the Book Explorers Club was born. Working with our parents organisation, Friends of Windmill Hill, we are able to bring our children fun monthly reading related activities, exciting reading displays around school and the chance to win or buy reduced price books. Over the past year the club has gone from strength to strength and we are really excited to be celebrating its’ one year anniversary on World Book Day.” Jacqueline Williams from the Friends of Windmill Hill parents organisation, who help the school to run the Book Explorers Club, said: “One of the key parts of the Book Explorers Club is to show our children that adults that they look up to love reading too, and we do that with our Caught

Reading posters. The posters feature pictures of the adults reading their favourite books with a couple of questions and answers about why they love reading. So far we’ve mostly featured teachers and adults who work in the school such as the Rugby coach (and Santa at Christmas!) but for World Book Day we are thinking big! We would love to have some really inspiring posters for the kids – such as local musicians, sports people and of course authors, to show them that truly everyone loves reading!” The showcasing of any Caught Reading posters that the school receives from local celebrities will be one of a range of activities taking place at the school on World Book Day – Thursday 2nd March. Other activities will include an Oscars themed fancy dress day, reading workshops, activities involving Chapeltown library, and talks from local author Peter Garner. Any local heroes reading this appeal who would like to help us inspire a love of reading in our pupils please contact us at windmillhillpta@gmail.com Questions we would love to ask our local heroes include: What’s your favourite book that’s been made into a film? Where is the strangest place you’ve ever read a book? Who’s your favourite author and why? What book character would you most like to be and why? What was your favourite book as a child? What are you going to read next?
Leisure centres power life saving heart research
PRIMARY school pupils in High Green were taught not to be down in the mouth about oral hygiene when a dental nurse and oral health educator visited them last week. Emily Grayson made the visit to Miss Green’s F2 class at High Green Primary School on Friday January 27 as part of an ongoing project. She told Look Local: “Having two young children of my own, I was increasingly aware that there was room for improvement with regards to the oral health education of children. “I approached High Green Primary School, who were extremely happy to participate in this community event. “Due to the growing number of school time appointments being made to visit the dentist and an increase in number of decayed, missing and filled
teeth in Sheffield’s children, between myself and the head teacher Diane Smales, we agreed that it would be beneficial to multiple members of the community for the F2 students to receive some more detailed education about tooth brushing, diet and the use of fluoride. “A morning was spent with the students, educating them through interactive activities and talks, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and sample different toothpastes. “A promotion pack was given all participants at the end of the session, ensuring all children in the group had their own toothbrush to use at home. “We have arranged the next session with nursery aged children at Steps Nursery at Paces Campus. This will include further oral health education, with an emphasis on ‘ditching the dummy’.”

Alex Greaves, contract manager at Places for People Leisure, said: “The BHF is leading the fight against heart disease and we are so pleased to have raised so much money to support their vital work. “I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our employees, customers and suppliers in helping us make a real difference.” Lauren Mallinson, Partnerships Manager at the BHF, added: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped

Setting up a Pre–Paid Funeral Plan
Co-op Funeralcare pre-paid plans
Having a pre-paid plan in place takes away the financial and emotional burden from your family at the time when they are least able to cope.
This is very easy and completion of your plan application is very simple and straightforward.
These are already exceptionally well priced, but unlike other providers, their plans INCLUDE ALL THIRD PARTY COSTS AND DISBURSEMENTS, so there will never be any more to pay for the services included in your Plan.
Sorting out the arrangements in advance means you are guaranteed the funeral you’d like AND your loved ones are spared the additional distress of organising it and paying for it. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding.
There are a variety of plans and payment alternatives to suit everyone. There are no age or health restrictions and no hidden costs. This can all be done in the comfort of your own home by arranging a meeting with either of us.

AN exciting programme of Saturday markets is planned for Penistone Market Barn in 2017. Starting in February and taking place alongside the regular Saturday markets, a different themed market will take place four times a month. On the first Saturday of the month regular stalls will be joined by a selection of secondhand stalls. This is a perfect place for avid bargain hunters to seek out a few hidden treasures, or have a clutter clear out by booking a stall and turning unwanted items into cash. The second Saturday of every month will feature a range of food and drink stalls which will vary from month to month
as well as offering a selection of delicious cakes, chocolates, chutneys and sauces along with the regular fruit and vegetable stalls. A range of popular arts and crafts stalls, offering unique gifts, handmade cards and gorgeous jewellery will visit the market on the third Saturday of the month. The fourth Saturday is for young entrepreneurs who are provided with stalls to showcase their creative products and talents. Any young person aged 29 or under can attend, selling a wide range of things they have made, up-cycled or bought, including handmade fashions, photography, arts and crafts, jewellery, home baking, gifts and toys.
The market teams are looking for designers, makers, bakers, artists, photographers and anyone else who is creative, as well as singers, rappers, dancers, performers and comedians to take part in these monthly youth events. The weekly Thursday market continues to be a vibrant and bustling, with fresh produce including fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, olives, cheese, eggs, bread and cakes, as well as cards, jewellery clothes, toiletries, sweets and more. The market is the ideal place to buy fresh, shop local and catch-up with friends and neighbours. For any enquiries call 01226 772246 or email marketservices@barnsley.gov.uk

defend them, but the facts that have been relayed to me are the facts, as far as I know. Councillor Drayton has received emails from me on this issue, and as a Cabinet Member I accept her statements at face value. The welfare of children and young people is paramount to me, and with the help of local people, volunteers and activists I feel with the projects we are helping with we will make a positive difference in West Ecclesfield.

Councillor response In response to Mike Levery’s letter (LL943), the email I sent to Richard Fletcher pointed out the facts as I new them at the time and the plans for the future of Angram Bank Children’s Centre. I have spoken personally to Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, Lifelong and Community Learning. I was informed this centre would not close. She has promised to send me a clear statement to address these issues in the hope of finally stopping people from worrying unnecessarily, Cllr Drayton’s words. When I receive this statement from the cabinet member, I will pass it on to all who have contacted me and anyone else concerned. Mike Levery rightly points out that I sit on, Children, Young People and Family Support Scrutiny and Policy Development Committee, but fails to mention three Liberal Democrat Councillors sit on it with me. I always deal in the truth and the facts. Well over a month ago the Liberal Democrats posted leaflets through the letterboxes of High Green residents and surrounding areas, the leaflets claimed the Labour Party is consulting on plans to close Angram Bank Children’s Centre and plans to close over half of Sheffield’s Children’s Centres. I am no fan of the Labour Council and will not

Sir, I see that yet again, off-road bikes have cut up the grass area at the top of Cowley Hill, adjacent to junction 35 of the M1. When is the council going to stop procrastinating over the proposed development of the service station in this area, and give it the go-ahead, so that the area is cleaned up permanently? So-called “ancient woodland or not (my understanding is that 50 years ago it was a coking plant), there is nothing of value in this area that is worth preserving, and the sooner it is developed the better. John Snook
Graffiti It’s been a good week for removing the blight of graffiti in High Green, as I type it’s snowing so I doubt we will be able to shift any this weekend, the gel does not work well if really cold. As I am working nights at the weekend I cannot say I am to upset about that. In any event we shifted four big tags completely during the week. Yes it does reappear but not as often as many imagine. Our cleaning off has resulted in these vandals in the main going back in to the shadows of alleyways and back streets.

Just to let people know, anyone who missed the first anti-fracking meeting held at The Venue in Stocksbridge by Mr Ian R Crane, regarding the devastation caused by fracking – his films are available free online. ‘Voices From the Gasfields’ and ‘The Truth Behind the Dash for Gas’. These two films are a real eye-opener, this will let people know what is coming if we don’t stop it! Yours faithfully, Mr N. K. Lockley.
Public asked for help with project to celebrate Penistone’s history DO you know any interesting stories about Penistone Station? A project looking to celebrate the town’s history is asking local people to dig out their memories of Penistone Station for an information panel. Part of an initiative to improve an access path between the station and the Trans Pennine Trail, the work is being carried out by local volunteer group TPT conservation volunteers. The panel is one of three included in the project, which hopes to create a sense of the town’s history. Another panel will cover the story of Cammell
Laird, and a third will keep people up to date with the wild flower reserve recently created behind the old station buildings. Supported by a grant from Penistone Working Together funded by Penistone Area Council, the project also includes a sculpture celebrating Cammell Laird, and general improvement and resurfacing works. TPT conservation volunteers is asking local people to contact them with stories and photographs either of Penistone Station or Cammell Laird. Most people know about the viaduct collapsing in 1916, but won’t have heard about the young man who stepped out on to the viaduct mistaking it for the platform in 1884, or the passenger who travelled from Doncaster to Penistone without a ticket in 1876 and was found under the carriage seat at Penistone Station, pretending to be asleep! Any information is useful, because it all adds to the story of Penistone and celebrates the colourful characters that have made Penistone the great community it is today. Information can be emailed to TPTconservationvolunteers@gmail.com, or taken to Penistone Town Hall (next to the Paramount Cinema); or you can speak to somebody on 01226 773012 / 07704333445. PCSOs to rescue as snow hits
LIBRARIES across Sheffield are preparing some special half-term activities for their younger users, with library volunteers hard at work preparing to welcome through their doors fans of Horrid Henry. Henry is a children’s character who is popular both in books and on TV, and he will be the focus of Readathon events in eight of Sheffield’s volunteer-run libraries, including Walkley, Stannington and Ecclesfield. Volunteers are now more than two years into managing local libraries. In their different ways, they all aim to use the Readathon during the halfterm break to entertain young readers and forge positive relationships with them. Engaging much more directly with users and introducing activities they may not have seen before is the primary aim of these events. Promoting willingness amongst young people to pick up books and read is the desired outcome. A popular children’s favourite like Horrid Henry is just one excellent way to achieve that goal. Activities will vary from library to library, but the Readathons will all consist of readings by volunteers from Horrid Henry books, and will be supported by a range of art, craft and game activities all themed round the character. The events also allow participants with a Passport
to Learning to gain points towards a Children’s University award. “We want to put on a half-term event that will promote reading, and show our young users it is something that can be done for fun as well as for learning,” said Bob Mynors who volunteers at Stannington Library. “A great deal of effort is going into these events at volunteer libraries across the city, and we are sure it will show very positive results. “At last year’s Voluntary Action Sheffield’s Make a Difference Awards, as volunteer libraries in Sheffield, we were proud to be recognised for our achievement in involving and supporting volunteers. We are investing the same commitment in involving and supporting library users.” Admission at the Readathon events in all eight libraries is free and there is no need to book. Families interested should simply turn up at any of the venues on the day. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. At Walkley Library, the event takes place from 2pm to 5pm on Monday February 20. On Tuesday February 21, it visits Stannington Library from 10.30am to 1.30pm and on Wednesday February 22, Ecclesfield Library will host it from 10am to 12.30pm.

FEBRUARY 2 was National Dignity Day and a number of local organisations helped to raise awareness with various events. Aaron View residential were sent leaves by Windmill Hill Primary School and wrote on them what dignity meant to them and how it could be upheld. Loud Academy visited Aaron View with two students from each of
the school year groups and their school mascot Jeremy the beagle. The children spoke with the residents about dignity and helped the residents to complete leaves for the dignity tree. Maze Hill Nursery sent Aaron View hearts in support of the day. The Commercial pub in Chapeltown invited the residents of Aaron View for a meal on
January 25 to support the day. The staff at Aaron View held a coffee morning and then held a Alice in Wonderland themed tea party for the residents. At Belmont House Nursing and Care Home in Stocksbridge residents enjoyed reminiscing over a cup of tea and biscuit. They shared old photographs of Stocksbridge
and Sheffield and told us about the jobs they’d done and the places they had lived in. Joyce enjoyed telling staff about the shop she had owned on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge which sold ‘all sorts’ from wallpaper and paint to sweets! Doreen told of being part of the Land Army and getting up to milk the cows.

EE NETWORK DOWN CUSTOMERS of the EE and Three networks have reported little or no signal in the Stocksbridge area for over a week now. Look Local contacted EE for a statement after their website’s coverage checker had shown that the service would be ‘good’ after 16 hours but continued to be a problem for days after.
A spokesperson for EE told Look Local: “We’re aware some customers are experiencing signal issues in the Stocksbridge area due to a faulty piece of hardware on the local mast. “We’re working hard with our network partners and the landowner to arrange access to the site so our engineers can fix the problem.
“Due to the height of the mast, professional riggers are required to make the climb and replace the faulty hardware. We are working hard to expedite the climb, so the local area is returned to full signal as soon as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Drug and cig busts in Parson Cross POLICE officers in Sheffield have been out this week executing warrants in and around the Parson Cross of Sheffield, in a bid to crack down on drug and illegal crime. Throughout the week two warrants were executed and an estimated thirty thousand counterfeit cigarettes, cannabis, class A drugs
and a large quantity of cash were seized. The intelligence led pre-planned warrants were executed as part of the work done in Sheffield, to remove the threat and harm caused by illegal drugs and counterfeit cigarettes from the community. An officer from Sheffield Tasking Team commented on the success of the warrants:
“We are really pleased with the seizures achieved from the warrants executed and we will now continue this work, to remove further threats from the community in order to keep our residents safe. “I would also like to stress the dangers of buying counterfeit goods, in particular tobacco products, as it unknown what chemi-
cals and toxins are ingested in addition to the known health risks associated with smoking.” Anyone with information in relation to drugs, drugs supply or any other offence can contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Simple operation on NHS saved my hearing BIRDSONG, a grandchild’s laugh and peeling a banana – Andy Walker has no doubt what his happiest sounds are. They mean even more to the father of three grown-up children from Deepcar because he spent most of his adult life unable to hear them. From a young age, a condition known as runny or discharging ears, caused Andy to have poor hearing. The affliction makes it difficult to wear hearing aids, as they block the ears and can stop infections from clearing. Andy largely got by until his good ear started to discharge in his 50s and he found it impossible to wear his hearing aid and keep the infection at bay, then in both ears. It was an impossible situation, for Andy, now 56, who works in a noisy steelworks. But the problem was resolved when he was fitted with a Cochlear bone-anchored hearing aid (Baha), in a simple day case procedure in May 2012. “The surgery was straightforward, all done and dusted in the morning,” says Andy. “I went home that afternoon and wasn’t in any pain.” Around three months later the device was switched on and Andy could hear better than

How does hearing loss affect you or your family? Hearing aids can provide a good solution for most people with a hearing loss. There are many individuals however who struggle with powerful hearing aids because hearing aids rely on making sounds louder but not necessarily clearer. A Cochlear implant can be a good alternative hearing solution for people who no longer benefit from hearing aids. he had all his adult life. “It was fantastic. Things sounded normal but the first thing I noticed was how loud the room was. When I asked what all the noise was I was told that it was the air conditioning,” he says. “I remember going down into the hospital café and sitting there listening. I had bought myself a banana and getting back to the car I sat inside and peeled the skin off. I could actually hear the skin tearing and I was fascinated.” That is why Andy - a health and safety manager at the Tata Steelworks in Stocksbridge - has chosen a peeling banana as one of his
happiest sounds, as part of a social media campaign called #HappiestSound. The idea of the campaign which was launched this month is to raise awareness that everyone, wherever possible, should be able to have a happiest sound. “Not everyone knows that they can have a Baha or Cochlear implant if their hearing aids don’t work,” says Andy. “They think it’s for children, or that they would have to go private. But so long as you meet certain criteria you can have the simple surgery free on the NHS regardless of age,” he adds.
“I would say for anyone who gets the chance to have this technology they should go for it. It has changed my life, the way people react towards me and how I communicate with them.” Hearing device provider Cochlear will announce the happiest sound on March 2, the eve of World Hearing Day. In the meantime it is asking everyone whether hard of hearing or not - to post their happiest sound on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #HappiestSound. All the happiest sounds will be featured on the website happiestsound.com

Be careful with chemicals Sometimes our plants and flowers need a helping hand to really flourish but make sure your pet isn’t exposed to the harsh chemicals that might be in your fertilisers and pesticides. Opt for a safer organic fertiliser, for example bone meal, and other natural remedies such as crushed up eggshells around the base of plants to deter slugs. But be wary that even those can cause problems for your pet if too much is ingested! Make it fun No one wants a garden full of craters but if your dog is a digger, why not make an area where he can enjoy himself without destroying the flowerbed? Encourage them by hiding their toys and treats in the right place. Make sure there’s a shady part of the garden for your pets to relax in and ensure that they have access to water if they’re outside over a long period.

Losing your pet can be a traumatic and even tragic event. Conscientious pet owners protect their pets with collars and ID tags. Unfortunately, collars and ID tags are not foolproof and dogs and cats can still get lost. Collars can break or fall-off, leaving your beloved pet among the countless, unidentified lost strays at animal shelters. Microchips are implantable computer chips that encode a unique identification number to help reunite you with your lost pet. They are no bigger than a grain of rice and they are placed under your pet’s skin with a needle and syringe, not much differently than a routine vaccine. Unlike collars and ID tags, they can never break or fall-off. They work by receiving a radio signal from a scanner and transmitting the encoded chip identification number back to the scanner. With the chip identification number in hand, the vital contact information is only a phone call away. Studies support what veterinarians and animal shelters have known all along. Dogs and cats with microchips are more likely to be returned to their owners than pets without.
According to Science Daily, the study reported that cats with microchips were 20 times more likely to be returned home than cats without, while dogs with microchips were 2.5 times more likely to be returned home than those without. The results of this study underscore the importance of microchips. The undeniable fact remains that microchips have reunited hundreds of pets with their guardians. Of course, in order for a microchip to work, you will need to register the microchip and keep your contact information up-to-date. Microchips are reliable and use nationwide registries, but they ultimately depend on the information that you give. So remember to update your information and provide multiple emergency contacts in case your pet gets lost while you are out of town. Hopefully your pet will never get lost, but in case it happens, by making sure your pet has a microchip, you are giving yourself and your pet the best chance of a speedy, happy reunion. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian -- they are your best resource to ensure the health and wellbeing of your pets.

raw feed? Should your pet
Dogs became domesticated thousands of years ago; a dog’s ancestral history traces back to wolves with a less that 2% difference in their DNA. Dog’s diets used to consist of scraps and carcasses, and what they’d killed on their own. But when commercial dog food appeared on the market, people found it very easy to scoop out kibble from a bag, or spoon out mush from a can. They believed it was balanced and nutritious for their pets; as the pet food industry increased, so did health issues in dogs. The ingredients used by the pet food industry are mainly waste from the human food industry. As people are becoming more aware of this, they are looking for other alternatives. Raw feeding a species specific diet has many benefits and has shown to promote excellent health in dogs, including improvements in dental and joint problems. A domesticated dog’s teeth are still designed to catch and kill prey, yet many modern commercial pet foods provide very little dental stimulation and bad teeth and breath are a common problem in our four legged friends. For many years, the domesticated dog survived on whatever food they could scavenge; there was no one to make sure their diet was balanced, complete and free from bacteria. In the wild, a wolf ’s diet consists of whole prey, including the bones, organs and partially digested vegetable matter; this would have been contaminated with all kinds of bacteria which can actually be beneficial to a healthy digestive system. Our dogs often like to bury bones and objects to be dug up later and chewed on. That bone is full of bacteria in incomprehensible numbers; food in the stomach of a carnivore is repeatedly bathed in acid and the low pH provides a natural barrier to common pathogens. Yet, a carnivore’s digestive system isn’t equipped to deal with large amounts of vegetables and plant matter; their gut is short and smooth and so proteins pass through very quickly. Yet, vegetable matter needs time to sit and ferment. Some people already know this, which is why vegetables and grains have to be pre-processed for dogs to get any nutritional benefit from them. This can also be a reason why some dogs can experience intolerances to dry kibble which is grain heavy. This is why the feeding of vegetables and grains in any form is questionable. A human diet is made up of lots of different foods- we consume different ingredients during the day and week. Our pets should too! We feed our dogs the same food throughout their lives and this can often lead to allergies. A variety of food is essential to a raw diet to provide a range of nutrients; a raw food diet consists of all the vitamins and minerals in their raw form, and a full range of antioxidants. Studies have shown
that the nutrients from whole, fresh ingredients protect against many illnesses, while the same nutrients in pill form show very little effects. To achieve the ideal diet, a raw diet should consist of raw muscle meat from chicken, turkey, rabbit etc including some bone, organ meat such as liver and kidney, and rib bones for dental hygiene. Generally you’re looking for 80% meat, 10% bone and 10% offal. Carbohydrates don’t contain any essential ingredients. There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate for dogs
The benefits of raw feeding are huge! Food that is whole, fresh and uncooked helps the body fend off aging, improves cell metabolism and renewal, helps fight off disease and is easily digested- all of this generally means lower vet bills. Plus, you will soon notice that the amount of bags you need to take on your walk will be drastically reduced, teeth are white so no need for expensive trips to the vet, weight is easily controlled, energy levels are higher, and coats are shiny and healthy. Raw food also contains 75-80% water, which is vital for proper digestion and could possibly decrease the risk of bloat and bladder stones. There are different types of raw food diets: raw, meaty bones known as the prey model diet is the closest to wolf ’s diet, the BARF diet is similar with the addition of small amounts of fruit and vegetables, and dehydrated raw diets. If you do decide to give vegetables to your dogs, such as broccoli, celery, lettuce, kale and carrots, they are high in oxalic acid and should be fed sparingly and they can interfere with calcium absorption.
What is raw feeding, and why might you (or your pet) want to make the switch?

Give your dog the food nature provided
Around eighty million species on earth survive on raw foods that are specific to them. Only humans and domesticated pets largely consume a cooked and processed diet filled with unhealthy ingredients, chemicals and preservatives. As such, we and our pets suffer from chronic illnesses like arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases. The harmful effects of consuming toxins produced by processing foods accumulate over the years; eating whole foods results in a lower risk of these diseases for us and our pets. There are great increases of illnesses in our dogs (and cats) and many stories of pet foods being recalled because of tainted ingredients, it is extremely important to consider the benefits of a raw diet. Tigers take to track SHEFFIELD Tigers fans can get their first taste of Owlerton track action when the team go through pre-season practice next month. The club have confirmed their press day for Thursday March 23 when the riders will face the cameras before taking to the circuit to go through their paces. And immediately afterwards the team will move into the Panorama Room where they will be handed their 2017 race jacket and mix with fans for pictures and autographs. The track action starts at 5.30 and the social event gets underway at 7.30. There will also be a special opening night meeting on March 30 with details to be revealed later this week. Co-promoter Damien Bates said: “Press and practice is always popular and we hope we have better luck with the weather after it was washed out last year. The lads are keen to get out there and get some laps under their belt. “It’s good for supporters to come along and see them in action too and this is a great chance for them to meet their heroes. “We will open our home season on March 30 and I’m excited about what we have lined up that night. Fans are also reminded about the talk-in at Owlerton next week. A special pane of guests including Kyle Howarth, Jack Parkinson-Blackburn, boss Simon Stead and promoters will be on hand to answer questions in the Panorama Room on Thursday February 23. Admission is free but a donation would be welcome towards the upkeep of the Owlerton air fence and fans are urged to arrive early as there is a lot of interest in this event.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. HOGAN’S HULKING PRICE TAG COLD SPELL FOR PENISTONE RUNNERS
HOGAN’S RUN: Scott Hogan during his Stocksbridge Park Steels days. Pic: Pete Revitt.
IN the recently-concluded football transfer window, few players have been talked about as much as Scott Hogan. The 24-year-old striker has completed a move from Brentford to Championship big spenders Aston Villa, who are struggling in their first season in the division after relegation from the Premier League. West Ham were hotly-tipped to capture his signature but a fee couldn’t be agreed and it was Steve Bruce, with a record of getting clubs promoted, who managed to strike a deal and take him to the second city. It’s the 21 goals in 33 appearances for The Bees that saw his star rise and it is thought that the fee could end up being as much as £15 million after add-ons. But much like England striker Jamie Vardy, plying his trade for reigning champions Leicester City, Hogan partly has Stocksbridge Park Steels to thank for helping turn his career around. Hogan was with the local outfit as recently as 2012 after being released by Halifax Town following unsuccessful loan spells at Woodley Sports and Mossley. But, just as Vardy was moving up the divisions with a move to Halifax, Hogan was seemingly on a downturn in his career when he arrived at Stocksbridge. But under the guidance of then-manager Chris Wilcock, Hogan transformed into a more confident and accomplished player and in his short stint, he scored seven goals in 16 games.
With a quick turn of pace and offering a threat on the counter, he began to attract attention from other clubs before moving to Ashton United, closer to where he lived. Chairman Allen Bethel remembers: “Scott left in a much better mental state than when he first came. “He was better with the ball at both feet than Vardy but he didn’t have Vardy’s steel. He played alongside Jack Muldoon and they ended up teaming up again at Rochdale.” It was from Rochdale that Hogan was eventually poached by Brentford and despite suffering two serious injuries, he has progressed and became one of the highest-rated young strikers in England. Five strikers from Stocksbridge Park Steels have now made it to league football with Ross Hannah and George Maris also making the grade alongside Vardy, Hogan and Muldoon. Maris was a promising junior player at Bracken Moor before being snapped up by Barnsley, making three appearances. Although he struggled to break into the first team, he is now playing at Cambridge United and is still only 20. Muldoon is now at Lincoln City and enjoying a good FA Cup run with his current employers. Ross Hannah, now 30, was a regular goal scorer for Steels in his fledging career. He was especially prolific at Matlock Town with 102 goals in 130 games and earned a move to Bradford City. He is now at Barrow.
PAUL Fryers ventured over the Pennines to Littleborough to represent Penistone Footpath Runners in the Windy Hill Fell Race, run over 1,280ft of climb over the nine gruelling miles. Added to that the snow and none existent visibility this one was a real test of character, one which Paul passed with flying colours, finishing in 163rd in 1:41.38 Richard Hayes travelled down the Great North Road to Stamford for the St.Valentines 30k, a traditional pre-marathon preparation event, finishing in 17th place in a time of 1:57.35 on the undulating course Despite the horrendous conditions, three hardy club members ventured to West Yorkshire for the tough hilly Liversedge Half Marathon. First home for the club was Lee Storey in 1:25.56. Followed by Alex Simon in 1:42.46 and the ever green V65 Keith Gordon who finished third in his age category in 1:52.41. Last week saw the final meet of the City of Sheffield & Dearne AC Indoor Run, Jump, Throw series. Penistone had one senior and one junior compete on the night. In the 200m heat 10 Emma Mears ran 31.7 to finish 3rd girl overall in her heat. In the open 3,000m against a quality field Richard Hayes finished eighth but reducing his personal best and club record by a further four seconds in a time of 9:54.76. The final race of the Barnsley AC Winter Track series took place this past Wednesday night.
Scott Hinchcliffe and John Broom both set new senior men’s and V45 men’s club records. Scott finished fifth in a time of 35:30.5 and John Broom posted a time of 37:02.4 to find himself top of the national V45 rankings for 2017 for 10,000m. Sarah Walch got more than she bargained for in the Saltburn Trail Half Marathon in the North East. The muddy course ended up consisting of 15 miles rather than the advertised 13.1, with Sarah completing the race in 2:49.20.

BECOME A CYCLING CHAMPION AND INSPIRE OTHER WOMEN TO RIDE IN SHEFFIELD BRITISH Cycling’s women-only cycling programme, HSBC UK Breeze, is on the hunt for female cyclists to inspire other women to get on their bikes in Sheffield. If you love cycling recreationally and are passionate about supporting others in your local community, there’s no better time to become a Breeze Champion. Breeze is the biggest programme ever to get more women riding bikes for fun. Led by women for women, Breeze relies on a group of volunteer ride leaders, known as Breeze Champions, to support other women on free, guided bike rides across the UK. Breeze empowers women to change the face of cycling for good and leave a lasting legacy in their area. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s an exciting time for cycling here in Sheffield, with the Outdoor City Weekender being held next month and, of course, the Tour de Yorkshire race in April set to finish at Fox Valley. “It’s therefore also a perfect time for keen female cyclists to think about encouraging other women to pull on their helmets and discover the joys of getting out and about on two wheels. “This free course is open to all women who are confident on a bike, so I’d encourage anyone interested to give
it a try and pass on their love of cycling to others.” Becki Morris, Women’s Network Project Manager at British Cycling, said: “Our volunteer Champions are at the heart of Breeze. Their passion and commitment to encourage and support women to get into cycling is truly inspiring. “It is in large part down to their efforts that the programme is as successful as it is. We never cease to be amazed by them.” With over 2,000 Breeze Champions trained across the UK to date, Breeze has built a growing network of inspiring women. To join them, there’s no need to be a cycling expert, you just need to be confident on a bike and have the enthusiasm to motivate others. The training is a one day course that qualifies you to deliver guided bike rides for groups of beginner and intermediate level adults and accompanied children, on roads and cycle paths. You’ll meet like-minded women and what’s more, it’s absolutely free. After completing the Ride Leadership Award, Breeze Champions will receive free Breeze kit and British Cycling Ride membership. Visit breezebikerides.com to apply for a place on the Breeze Champion training course.

Voeckler back to defend title at 2017 Tour de Yorkshire THOMAS Voeckler will be back to defend his Tour de Yorkshire title after being unveiled as the first star rider of 2017. Welcome to Yorkshire announced Voeckler, who emerged triumphant last year when he broke away with Nicolas Roche (Team Sky) on the final climb of the third stage. He then outsmarted his rival in a two-way sprint for the overall victory along Scarborough’s North Bay. That win proved the highestprofile success of the season for the Frenchman, who is one of the most celebrated cyclists of his generation. He has earned a cult following due to his attacking style and never-saydie attitude. The 37-year-old has also won four Tour de France stages, held the iconic yellow jersey for no less than 20 stages, and even topped the mountains classification in a glittering career. Last September he announced plans to retire following this summer’s Tour de France, meaning the Tour de Yorkshire on 28-30 April will be his last-ever appearance on British soil. As such, the Direct Énergie rider will be firing on all cylinders and cannot wait to return to the county which he holds in such fond regard.
Voeckler said: “I fell in love with the Tour de Yorkshire two years ago and it was a huge honour to win it after finishing third in 2015. “This race feels like home for me because the crowd are always shouting my name, holding up banners or writing it on the road. I have never seen anything like it. “I am looking forward to competing in Yorkshire one last time and I hope to have a major impact on the race, however I can.” Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Sir Gary Verity is delighted to see Voeckler return for a third successive season and insists he is just the first in a long list of world-class riders to be unveiled over the coming months. He said: “Thomas has been a tremendous ambassador for the Tour de Yorkshire so I am thrilled he will be on the start line again. “His swashbuckling style is a joy to behold and that tenacity has endeared him to supporters young and old. “Riders of his ilk are what makes the Tour de Yorkshire so special and we will have a stellar field lined up once again in April. “The word is now truly out on what a special and well supported race the Tour de Yorkshire is, and with the 2019 World Championships now firmly on the horizon, the interest in the race has never been higher.”
