Detective Chief Inspector, Dave Stopford, the Senior Investigating Officer, said: “Webster and Moss are two violent, sickening individuals who have shown absolutely no remorse for what they did to Mr Wild. “Webster even bragged about how he would have disposed of Mr Wild’s body had officers not turned up at the address when they did. “Not only did they carry out a relentless attack on the victim, who was utterly defenceless, they then proceeded to pour salt on to him in this sadistic murder. “Moss stated that she had sat on the settee and covered her face throughout the attack, when really, we were able to prove she participated in the murder. “The pair made every attempt to hide what they had done and I’m pleased that they have had their freedom taken away and will be behind bars for what will hopefully be the rest of their lives.” A statement from Mr Wild’s family said: “The impact our dearest Craig’s death has had on our family is one of total devastation for all of us who loved him so dearly. “As Alison Moss pleaded not guilty we have had to go through the harrowing process of a trial. It’s been too much for most of us to attend and hear the shocking details of the way that Craig was killed.

“We, as a family, would like to thank South Yorkshire Police, the CPS and the Victim Homicide Service for their continued hard work and their support through this process.” Mr Wild’s family has asked for privacy at this difficult time. Moss was also sentenced for assaulting a 17-year-old man on Monday January 11 2016, at her home address. The court heard how she attacked the victim with a cutthroat razor and encouraged her dog, a Rottweiler, to attack him. The victim was left with wounds and bite marks to his arms, and a large gash to the side of his head, as a result of being hit with a pair of scissors. Moss was sentenced for ten years in prison for this crime, to run concurrently.

TWo JaileD FoR MURDeR A COUPLE convicted of the murder of ‘popular’ Sheffield man Craig Wild are both beginning life sentences behind bars. Alison Moss, 46 and of Fox Walk, Walkley, Sheffield was found guilty of murder by a jury following a two-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Her partner, David Michael Webster, 49, of Leppings Lane, Hillsborough, pleaded guilty to Mr Wild’s murder at an earlier hearing. They appeared in court on Friday February 17 for sentencing. They were both jailed for life, with Moss told to serve a minimum of 29 years behind bars and Webster

ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years and two months. On the evening of Thursday August 25, 47-year-old Craig Wild was found dead at Moss’ address in Walkley. The court heard how Moss and Webster had been drinking and taking drugs at the house, before they were joined by Mr Wild. An argument is then

said to have broken out, before Webster launched a horrific attack on the victim. Mr Wild was found covered in a blood-stained duvet in the house, with over 117 separate injuries, caused by a Stanley knife, kitchen knife, screwdriver and as a result of being punched, kicked and stamped on.

SADISTIC: Alison Moss and David Webster, above, killed Craig Wild, to the right.

STAR QUALITY: Jim Moir, better known as Vic Reeves.

SCORES of local people were used as extras for a star-studded short film being filmed in Penistone last week. Filming took place at a number of locations, including Penistone Paramount and the Huntsman pub in Thurlstone. A host of film and television stars were involved with Jim Moir, best known for his comedian persona Vic Reeves, joined John Thompson of Cold Feet fame and Jane Horrocks whose previous roles include Bubbles in popular sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. The film, titled Angel 2.0, follows angel ‘Frank’ on his last mission on earth before returning to the heavenly gates above – during this mission he encounters psychic Bernard (played by Jim Moir), and his wife Cheryl (played by Jane Horrocks). Jim Moir described his character as “like Derek Acorah but with the voice of David Dickinson”. The film was written and directed by Nick Wild and produced by Rob Speranza. The film, which has now completed filming, will be shown at film festivals and there is a possibility that it may be adapted into a feature-length film if it proves popular. One extra told Look Local: “It was great to spend a day on set and see what goes into making a film. “You don’t realise how many people work on something, even when it’s just a short film like this. “It was a long day of filming but the director seemed pleased with the extras and the actors were all lots of fun and were very approachable. “I’m hoping that it’ll get shown on television but even if not, it was certainly an experience.”

THE fire service is calling on people in South Yorkshire to have their say on how it plans to deliver its work to local people between now and 2020.

· Adding two additional fire engines at two fire stations in South Yorkshire, which would also be available all of the time in the day, but ‘on call’ at night

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue does not propose making any further reductions in fire station or fire engine numbers in plans presented to the service’s governing Fire Authority on Monday February 13, despite having lost more than £14 million from its annual budget since 2010.

· Continuing to offer fire prevention guidance to all, but prioritising its free Home Safety Checks service for those who the service believes are at the greatest risk of fire

But its proposals do include making more of its firefighters available in the day when crews are busiest, changing its prevention work to focus on those most at risk and proactively exploring collaboration opportunities with other emergency services. Key changes outlined in the service’s draft Integrated Risk Management Plan 2017-20 include: · Changing the staffing of the second fire engine at Sheffield’s Central fire station so that it is available all of the time in the day, but ‘on call’ at night

· Finding further ways of working more closely with the police and ambulance services, as a new law now makes it a requirement for all emergency services to do The plans also consider how the fire service intends to respond to Government’s efforts to reform the fire service nationally, including requirements to provide a more flexible and diverse workforce. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Martin Blunden, said: “Our vision for the lifetime of this plan is to provide the best possible service to the people of South Yorkshire within the resources which are available to us.

“We are not proposing any further significant changes to our core 999 service, beyond those outlined in previous plans. But the proposals we have outlined in this plan do explain how we intend to develop our service to become more efficient in what we do and make the biggest possible difference to those most at risk of fire. “These are draft proposals and we really want to gather views from the public on the plans we have put forward.” Members of the public can share their views on the plans between now and March 27. Once the consultation period has ended and feedback has been considered, Fire Authority members will make the final decision on the proposals. People can share their views via an online survey, in writing or at a series of community roadshow events. To read the proposals in full, for more information on the consultation and to have your say, visit www.syfire.gov.uk.

Board games at library guarantee full house

PLAYING board games as a family needn’t be a trivial pursuit – thanks to a successful and now well-established Saturday session at booming Ecclesfield Library. A popular board games session at the library has now been extended until June, and Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for community services and libraries, was among those taking part last weekend. The sessions, run by Imagination Gaming, encourage children and families to come down and have a positive experience of their local library, as well as providing exciting activities, helping to connect communities together. Libraries of all sizes are perfect environments for people to meet in a calm and relaxed environment, and the games Imagination Gaming bring along always provide an enjoyable and inviting focus for everyone to get involved in. Councillor Scott led the calls for more people to volunteer at the library so it can put on similar events throughout the year. He said: “This event was a great success and very well attended. Lots of fun was had by all, including my own children. “It’s great to see Ecclesfield Library going from strength to strength and I hope even more people come forward to help. Local councillor Andy Bainbridge, who also attended the event, added: “It was brilliant to see the community coming together and supporting the library like this – it was a full house. Chris Standley of Imagination Gaming said: “Days like these demonstrate the importance of games in bringing people together. We’ll be back every month until June to bring board games back to Ecclesfield and other similar suburbs of Sheffield.

Beer festival raises funds for Tiny Hearts DENBY Dale Lions have donated some of the proceeds of their recent Penistone Beer Festival to Barnsley Hospital Charity and their Tiny Hearts Appeal. The remaining proceeds from the Beer Festival were donated to community projects in Penistone. A spokesperson for the Lions said: “A massive thank you once again to all who came out and sampled a wee tipple.â€? The Tiny Hearts Appeal aims to raise ÂŁ1 million over the next two years to help fund a brand new Special Care Baby Unit at the hospital. The new unit aims to provide an even better standard of care for all the special care babies and the most comfortable environment for all families and staff on the unit. The new unit will be built around the needs of the babies and their families. State-of-the-art equipment will be provided to enable the Special Care Baby Unit team to continue their fantastic care and enhance their capabilities. The unit will sit on the same level as the Barnsley Birthing Centre, which means that the babies will not have to be exposed to different environments and different temperature changes, nor will they have to be taken into an elevator. Premature babies are underdeveloped and have to be given extra help for their tiny bodies to cope with the outside world, and can spend up to 13-14 weeks on the unit. The care on the unit is focused around allowing the babies to fully develop and the current unit needs to be updated and expanded in order to allow parents to have proper bonding time with their babies.

Minor issues, really, and certainly nothing that was going to stop me getting on with my day-to-day life. However, over the past year I noticed that the pain and discomfort seemed to be worsening. A Window of Opportunity In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local double-glazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

Ian Clancy at the start of his business career.

The very first door made by Deepcar in 1978

A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom showing off the latest range of products from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise Businessman of the year’

Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working- order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service. He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe, who show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities to their father are now helping the successful window company build on the 36 years of trading.

After nearly four decades of providing unparalleled products and service, Deepcar invite you to view the latest in home improvements at their new showroom. If its experience, quality and reliability you are looking for look no further than Deepcar.

Dance Festival Success

The Castle Inn, Bolsterstone NEW MENU NOW AVAILABLE

LIVE MARTIN RIVERS BAND

Almost 18 months on ‘Team P’, made up of 20 children aged five to 16, have participated in five festivals, the latest being The Millennium Festival in Doncaster where they had great success.

Back in September 2015, after a successful show at The Rotherham Civic Theatre, the Principal, Melanie Pickering, realised that quite a few of her pupils had the ability and desire to pursue a career in dancing.

The team won 25 medals, several trophies and a Bursary between them.

These children had all started dance classes with her from the age of three and were now becoming teenagers. What had started as a pastime had become an important part of their lives. Some were attending classes, in ballet, tap, jazz and pointe three times a week. This inspired her to enter those that were interested in Dance Festivals which would help give them more experience and confidence in the world of dance.

Melanie Pickering, or Miss P as she is known to parents and pupils alike, praised the dedication, hard work and support of all her pupils. She told Look Local: “Every child is important at The Pickering Academy, and everyone is very supportive of one another. “However, every girl on this picture is determined to have a future in dance, and that makes us all very proud. “The Newton Hall is a fantastic facility and I’m pleased that it’s being used for the benefit of the local community, both now and for future generations.”

THURSDAY PIE NIGHT

ON Saturday 18 February, scouts, explorers, brownies and cubs worked with Penistone Clean and Tidy Team, Silkstone Parish Council and Silkstone CARE to improve Conroyd Wood for the local community and wildlife. The groups have been working hard over the last few months to build animal and insect homes for bats, hedgehogs, frogs and bugs, that park rangers and Penistone Clean and Tidy Team have helped developed. Groups installed the new animal homes and targeted the local stream which is eroding parts of the woodland bank and threatening the public

footpath, running through the woodland. To do this they used local hazel trees which need to be cut back in the village, to create a protective wall for the water to hit, instead of the river bank. Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said: “The project is a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills and build an interest in wildlife and the environment. “Not only will the groups be providing new homes for local wildlife, they will be using traditional nonintrusive methods and natural products to help stabilise and protect the river bank and woodland for the community to enjoy.”

A SOUTH Yorkshire Fire Cadet will be representing Team GB under 16s Inline Puck Hockey Squad in America this summer. Evan Coles, a Fire Cadet at Stocksbridge fire station is hoping to be in Los Angeles this July at the AAU Junior Olympics. It will last for eight days, and the team will take part in a minimum of ten games in two competitions international and club tournaments. Fire Cadets learn firefighting skills and techniques from specially qualified instructors to develop practical, life and communication skills. It also encourages young people to be part of a team and to enhance their physical and mental capabilities, skills which Evan will need to take up this fantastic opportunity. Evan said: “The Great Britain team is made up of players from all four of the home nations, to be asked to represent my Country is a real honour and something that all sports people strive for during their lifetime. It comes at a cost though,

as I need to raise £1,500 to cover my equipment and travel.” Youth Engagement Officer Nicola Hobbs said; “This is the chance of a lifetime for Evan, we are all really proud of him here at South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue. “He has been a fire cadet for nearly three years and has grown in confidence over this time. “He is a well respected and dedicated member of the Stocksbridge Fire Cadet team. We will all be routing for him this summer and wish him all the best.” If you would like to become a Fire Cadet and would like to learn new skills and support the fire service’s work in the local community please get in touch. For more information, email Nicola Hobbs at nhobbs@syfire.gov.uk. 01144 031 031 ALL IN THE FAMILY: Mavis Sheldon, Daniel Jackson and Jan Jackson. CHAPELTOWN Amateur Operatic Society or CAOS for short, this year celebrates a host of its membership receiving NODA, National Operatic and Dramatic Association, Long Service medals, two of which are from the same family with a third generation also performing on stage in April this year at Rotherham Civic Theatre. Mavis Sheldon receives her 65-year award which commemorates her long service to amateur theatre. Mavis started to tread the boards in 1952 at her local society in Liverpool where she undertook supporting lead roles. In 1957 Mavis came to South Yorkshire and joined Wombwell Operatic Society before becoming a member of CAOS in 1962 where she performed

on stage and through the years held various positions for the society such as registrar, musical director, producer to name a few, and wardrobe manager which is a position Mavis still holds. Following in her mum’s footsteps is Jan Jackson who this year receives her 35 year medal first performing on stage at a very young age in 1972 when CAOS performed The King and I. From 1981, Jan was a regular on stage until 2006 when she stepped in as the Society Producer, a position she still holds now. Mavis’ grandson and Jan’s son, Daniel, is also an active member of the CAOS first joining the society on stage in 2014 when they performed Carousel.

this year will be on stage for the society’s performance of White Christmas which takes place in April. Daniel is also an active member of the societies Academy Group which is made up of young people aged eight to 16. CAOS really is a family affair, and this year is no different when White Christmas premiers at Rotherham Civic Theatre between April 4 and 8 and is sure to be a spectacular event for people of all ages. Tickets are priced at £14 for adults and £12 for concessions with a promotion on the Tuesday – £10 for all tickets.

We are very grateful to Peter and the team at Dyson’s for their warmth and efficiency and for putting us in touch with Graham, the Funeral Celebrant, who led the proceedings so thoughtfully. On February 25, it will be 130 years since the death of Samuel Fox. He is buried at North Cliffe near Market Weighton. He purchased some land and in 1873 he built a church and called it St John’s. The architect was the first Lord Grimthorpe who was the designer of Big Ben. It is an unusual church because the altar faces north and not west, as in most churches. He was the first person to be buried in the churchyard. M. P. Woodcock.

The Yorkshire Tiger number 23 bus service is an absolute joke. They hardly ever turn up and people are having to pay for a taxi to get to work. The bus times are totally unrealistic and a total waste of space, it’s like Tates’ all over again. What about people who have hospital appointments in Barnsley for example? Bolsterstone now has no service at all. There are elderly people here who depend on the 23. People with painful arthritis and osteoporosis who now have to trek to Cedar Road for the Supertram Link and then have to somehow drag themselves all the way back with heavy shopping. For the elderly to have to suffer like this is like living in a third world country. It’s an absolute disgrace in this day and age. Please come back Stagecoach, you were superb. In snow and ice we would be housebound as a slip in ice would be a fracture for sure. And also Fox Valley seems to be getting priority, obviously they think Bolsterstone residents don’t want to go there. Disgusting, I certainly won’t be going there, I have enough walking to do. Mrs P. A. Stephenson, A Bolsterstone resident.

Fracking meeting Fracking is a controversial issue which would affect us all and almost all of South Yorkshire is now under licence to be fracked. There is mounting evidence that fracking has negative effects on our health, our environment and our communities. A chance to find out more about the issues involved is being given at a free public meeting on Thursday February 23 at 7.30pm in the Zion URC Church, Langsett Road, Oughtibridge. Why not come along to find out more information to help you to make up your own mind? Doris Stubbs

Lighting bazaar I recently came across the following article appearing in the Bolsterstone column of the June 22nd 1929 edition of the “Penistone Expressâ€? (on page 16) which relates: “LIGHTING BAZAAR – A ‘lighting’ bazaar was held in the Vicarage gardens on Saturday, and was opened by Captain H.E. Rimington Wilson, of Broomhead Hall. The Marconiphone Company kindly provided a microphone and loud speakers so that the opening ceremony could be heard by everyone, and Mr. John Webb, of Stocksbridge, lent gramophone records which were transmitted through the loud speakers and supplied music throughout the afternoon. “The children of the Bolsterstone school, under the supervision of Miss MacNab and Miss H. Charlesworth, gave displays of country and Morris dancing, and there were a number of attractive stalls and side-shows. In the evening a dance was held in the schoolroom, where a loud speaker had also been installed, and music was relayed from a number of European stations. In all, about ÂŁ50 was realised by the effort.â€? Thus leaving me wondering amongst other things, as to precisely what a lighting bazaar was in this particular context; especially given that the phrase lighting is placed in inverted commas, thereby

implying a play on words away from their literal meaning. Whilst I’m also puzzled by the reference to music from a number of European stations being relayed to the audience during the evening. Perhaps a reference to certain European radio stations? I was therefore wondering if any readers could shed any further light upon the matter via Look Local. Yours faithfully, Michael Parker.

Protect the Green Belt at Smithy Wood I refer to John Snook’s letter published in last week’s Look Local. It would appear that Mr Snook does not understand or appreciate the importance and purpose of the Green Belt. His suggestion that the green-belt area known as Smithy Wood, at the top of Cowley Hill, should be ‘cleaned up’ by the construction of a polluting service station is certainly not the answer to the off-road bikers’ problem as clearly shown by the massive number of objections received by Sheffield City Council. Despite Mr Snook’s comments, it is a fact that the area to which he refers is an important green-belt area containing an ancient-woodland site that is supportive of a varied wildlife. The Green Belt itself provides an extremely valuable service and a number of important benefits are: * to prevent the unrestricted sprawl of large builtup areas * to prevent neighbouring towns from merging into one another * to assist in safeguarding the countryside from encroachment * to assist in urban generation by encouraging the recycling of brownfield sites * to provide habitat for wildlife What Mr Snook appears to be suggesting is that

Service station response In response to John Snook’s letter (16.2.17) referring to the proposed Service Station at J35 of the M1 at the top of Cowley Hill. Could I point out the following facts: 1. This “so called Ancient Woodland of Smithy Wood has been documented as Ancient Woodland for at least 800 years and the woodland was not where the Coking plant was based. The coking plant was where the Business Park is now. 2. We have constantly tried, in coordination with the police, council and landowners, to stop the illegal use of this land by off-road bikers and 4x4 vehicles. Does Mr Snook truly believe that building a service station would stop this? Or would the off roaders just move further down to the remaining woodland or across the road to Hesley Wood? Does he really believe that a Service Station would clean up the area permanently? 3. The grass verge adjacent to Cowley Hill belongs to the Highways and the council did agree to re-seed it last year, but don’t have the resources

to build barriers. 4. Yes the woodland is worth preserving. It is home to many species of wildlife, flora and fauna despite the damage done by the off-roaders, which is reversible given time. It could be turned into a fantastic recreation resource (like Greno Woods), for local people to enjoy, given the correct care and supervision. Have you been to see the beautiful bluebells there in the springtime? NB. There has been a litter pick at the entrance to the woodland for the last four months with the removal of several sacks of rubbish on each occasion. People do care about the woodland. Cowley Residents Action Group

Less than super Unfortunately, due to broken points Supertram were unable to serve Middlewood today. Even more unfortunate is that once again Stagecoach were not able to put the customer first and provide a “joined up service and simply run the link buses to and from Hillsbrough. So what happened was a bus came from Stocksbridge and everyone got off the bus and stood around in the cold. After five minutes they were then advised to get on the very same bus with all the other people waiting and were taken to Hillsborough. At Middlewood, Supertram had provided a conductor to tell customers there were no trams and a replacement bus service was in place but they did not think to provide him with any communication tools and the only way he could get information was by asking the bus drivers what was happening. There was not even any attempt to run the buses to Hillsborough to the timetable although I was told it was a 10 minute service. I wonder when Stagecoach will (once they have the extra buses) think to simply extend the Tramlink buses when there is disruption as the norm and put their customers first? Alistair Nicoll

because the grass area at the top of Cowley Hill has been cut up by off-road bikes, we should ignore that the land at Smithy Wood is within the Green Belt and conveniently turn a blind eye to the green-belt regulations. The Green Belt is in place to specifically prevent the action that Mr Snook is suggesting and it must be demonstrated that important green-belt sites cannot be simply converted into valuable development opportunities by merely letting such areas become run-down. If the off-road bikers to which Mr Snook refers are acting illegally or antisocially then this should be either reported to the police or to the local authority. I trust that this clarifies the position regarding the purpose and importance of the Green Belt and the need to protect the green-belt area at Smithy Wood.

Teach your children how to give nature a home at RSPB Old Moor Teach your children how to give nature a home at RSPB Old Moor

With amazing wildlife, an exciting indoor activity centre, fantastic visitor’s centre and a range of excellent education facilities, Old Moor offers superb facilities for school visits. Our meadows, wildlife hides and ponds also provide a great opportunity for children to get a closer look at the Dearne Valley’s fascinating wild creatures. Old Moor is the ideal place to bring your children for an unforgettable first-hand experience of nature that brings learning to life. All our school learning sessions are led by qualified, knowledgeable and enthusiastic leaders. Sessions are designed to support a range of classroom topics to suit all abilities and are linked to the National Curriculum. Sessions are designed to focus on exploration and discovery for the children, allowing learning to be fun and inspiring. Activities are hands on and use a variety of tools to help them find out more about nature and the world around them. We’re never put off by inclement weather and we’ll adjust the programme accordingly. There will be fun learning activities to do whatever the weather and lunch can be eaten indoors in our activity centre. Facilities at the reserve include indoor and outdoor learning spaces, a child friendly wildlife hide, shop and cafe, and disabled changing room. There is a dedicated coach parking bay and a large car park. Primary school visits are charged at just £3.75 per child for a half day and £6.50 per child for a full day (minimum of 20 children). All accompanying adults are free of charge and prices include VAT We’d be happy to help you plan your visit. Contact our Regional Schools on Reserves Administrator on 0191 233 4315 or by email at schoolbookings@rspb.org.uk. But, why stop at school visits? Old Moor is the perfect family outing for children of all ages. There are lots of events, guided walks and family activities, as well as home-cooked food in the café and a well-stocked shop. The reserve is a great day out for young and old alike with a Discovery Zone packed full of fun games for families.

Dearne Valley Old Moor Nature Reserve

Plan to spend up to three hours for a good visit to the reserve, or longer if you want to sample our home cooking in the café. All paths are accessible, but sensible shoes are best to make the most of your walk around the reserve. Whilst we do have shelter in the hides, the shop and café, it is advised to bring a mac if the weather looks inclement. Children can have fun on the climbing frames, swings and slides in the adventure playground. There are also Wildlife Explorer backpacks available for hire. These contain bug jars, binoculars and guide books to help children get the most out of their visit. Pond dipping kits are also available to hire to help you explore a fascinating world under water. Also, the national Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) cycle route runs right past the entrance to RSPB Old Moor. In summer the grasslands are ablaze with butterflies and orchids, and you’ll be able to see newly-hatched ducklings. Around 8% of our visitors travel to the reserve along the TPT. Unfortunately we don’t allow cycling or dog walking on Old Moor itself, but the reserve is a great opportunity to stop off and refresh yourself with tea and a bacon butty. Alternatively you can park up at one of our bike racks and head off on to the reserve for a spot of nature. The visitor centre and café are open daily, except Christmas Day and Boxing day, 9.30am to 5pm. Plus, with children’s entrance fees at just £2.50, adults at just £5 and a family ticket for £11 there really isn’t a reason not to visit. Or why not become a member and help give nature a home? Individual adult membership starts at just £4 a month; family membership for 1-2 adults and up to 5 children from only £5 a month, and youth membership for up to 5 children is just £22 a year for one child or £33 a year for 2-5 children. We also have lots of events coming up throughout the year, just check our listings at www.rspb.org.uk and search for ‘Dearne Valley’ or find us on Facebook: RSPB South Yorks.

Meadows, wildlife hides and ponds provide a great opportunity for kids of all ages to get a closer look at the Dearne Valley’s fascinating wild creatures.

PDSA writing competition celebrates world book day TO celebrate World Book Day’s 20th anniversary on March 2, vet charity PDSA has teamed up with award-winning children’s writer Hilary Robinson to launch its annual writing competition. The competition is open to budding young writers, aged 16 or under, and this year’s theme is Animal Heroes. This coincides with Hilary’s latest book Flo of the Somme, which tells the story of a heroic dog who worked in the WW1 battlefields, delivering medical supplies to injured soldiers. To help this year’s entrants, Hilary has started the story of Buddy: a pet who comes to live with twins Jess and James when their grandma moves into a care home. It’s now up to the young writers to complete the story – more details can be found at www.petprotectors.org.uk/writing. The winner – judged by Hilary – will receive an Amazon Kindle, a signed set of Hilary’s books, and a VIP tour with Hilary at a PDSA Pet Hospital. Three runners-up will each win a signed copy of Hilary’s latest book Flo of the Somme and a special PDSA Pet Protectors goodie bag. Hilary, who is an author, radio producer, broadcaster and feature writer, has written over 50 books for children and is perhaps best known for Mixed Up Fairytales as well as her WWI picture book series, created with War Horse illustrator Martin Impey. Entries should be around 1,000 words and can be emailed to petprotectors@pdsa.org.uk or posted to: Young Writers Competition, PDSA Head Office, Whitechapel Way, Priorslee, Telford, Shropshire, TF2 9PQ. The closing date is 26 May 2017 and entrants should give their full name, date of birth, email address, plus their membership number if they are already a Pet Protector. World Book Day is designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of and is observed in over 100 countries. It is the biggest celebration of its kind and helps to encourage millions of children to explore the pleasure of books and reading. For more information on Hilary Robinson, visit www. hilaryrobinson.co.uk

AN exhibition of prints by Barnsley College Art and Design students has opened in The Civic and is available to view until April 8. The artwork selected has been chosen for its links to the natural world, from Yorkshire landscapes to animal studies. The project was completed by students over the summer and provided an opportunity for them to come up with creative and engaging artwork. Katharine Jackson, Course Leader for Art and Design, said: “We have a long standing relationship with the curator of the exhibitions at The Civic, our students have had the opportunity to showcase some of the best pieces to a wider audience. I am very proud of the hard work that the students have put in and their experimentation shows in the pieces that have been selected.

Students take part in print exhibition

William Cleland, an Art and Design student, added: “I feel this has been one of the most fulfilling art related experiences I’ve had and I believe I will carry on aspects of the revelations I have had in this project throughout the rest of my artistic career. To find out more about studying Art and Design courses at Barnsley College visit: www.barnsley.ac.uk/our-departments/artdesign-and-fashion/

WENSLEYDALE had the performance on the day to take the points in a must win game for both sides, jostling for safety in Yorkshire Three. Despite what was described by the coach and the captain as the best preparation for a game all season after a long bus journey up to North Yorkshire, Stocksbridge conceded the first try in the opening exchanges of the game. After an unruly bounce took a clearance kick over the dead ball line, Wensleydale scored off the first phase from the resulting scrum. Loading one side of the scrum, numbers eight and nine picked in the opposite direction making the overlap which was gleefully finished off in the corner by the winger. Before Stocksbridge could muster up a response Wensleydale extended their lead. Using their strong forward runners they worked the wide channel until the hooker was able to capitalise on the narrowest of blind sides that was left unmarked. Stocksbridge found themselves 12 points behind. Desperate for the win Bridge found some steel in their play, earning possession deep in the Wensleydale half. Despite numerous phases with the ball close to the line, indiscipline and poor execution meant the ball was turned over for the home side to clear, who rubbed salt into the

wounds as the winger added a second try to his tally, again finding space to score out wide. They added further points before the break, when the scrum half spotted the opportunity to score after the defence were slow to react when the referee came back for a penalty ten metres from the line. At 22-0 behind Stocksbridge began to play, and with their first opportunity Paul Kelly put Dave Potts into a gap after a strong lead runner occupied the surrounding defence. Just as the away side were growing into the game, Wensleydale again found space down the right flank as the winger scored his hat trick try to take the game away from Stocksbridge. Despite great patches of continuity from the Bridge, including a marvellous line break from the 22 by centre Dave Brown, Wensleydale killed the game with an intercept try in from the midfield and a fourth try for their winger. With that, the game ended 41 points to 5 in favour of Wensleydale. Despite the score line Stocksbridge competed for large parts of the game, more clinical play in the critical moments would have made for a very different game. Sam Whitaker (sponsored by The Business Hair Salon) was awarded Man of the Match for his stellar work in the set piece and positive attitude as heads began to drop.

Oughtibridge also looked threatening with strikers Tom Fletcher and Chas Tunnard looking dangerous.

In the second half Oughtibridge definitely started the brighter and looked more threatening. Callum Chambers, making his first appearance for eight weeks, scored a fabulous volley with half an hour to go when Tom Fletcher headed superbly into the striker’s path.

Evan Watson making his first full start for the Memorial was causing all kinds of problems from left back with not only some great defending but also going forward. And it was his cross that confused the Penistone Church keeper who somehow managed to palm

Just before half time the score should have been all aware but keeper Paul Cadman somehow saved when a goal looked certain.

Chambers by this time was causing all kinds of problems and should have made it three but shot wide. Penistone kept pushing but found it almost impossible to penetrate the resolute home defence superbly marshalled by captain James Baker on his 39th birthday.

Wombwell five mile road race

23

THE second of the Penistone Foothpath Runners’ road race championship events took place on Sunday at Wombwell. The traditional local five-mile road race attracted a massive turn out of 31 runners from the club and they came away with some impressive results. Scott Hinchcliffe finished third overall in 27.16 and Sam Shaw first lady overall in 31.20, setting a new ladies club record for five miles in the process. The men’s team of Hinchcliffe, Rob Lees and Damien Briscoe picked up thirrd prize overall. In addition there were club records set by Julie Darigala (F45), Bill Phillips (M65), David Needham (M70), Raymond Brown (M75) and Barbara Haigh (F70). There were also age categories wins for Bill Phillips who was first V65, David Needham who was first V70, Barbara Haigh with first F70, Raymond Brown first M75, Sue Higham top F65 and Norman Cole won the V80 category. A slight breeze made for ideal racing weather at the Flower Scar Fell Race, an AM category event. The race consisted of 6.5 miles/2297ft of climbing. The club was lead home by Richard Mackie who finished 35th overall and sixth in his age category. Steve Storey proved age is but a number by finishing third V60, followed a few minutes later by John Tomlinson and Paul Fryers putting in another great effort on the hills for the second weekend in succession.

RUTHVEN HITS WINNER FOR STEELS Rugby Town FC 0 – 1 Stocksbridge PS STRIKER Scott Ruthven scored an 82nd minute winner to hand Stocksbridge a 1-0 win at Rugby on Saturday, their second 1-0 win of the week. Ruthven pounced on a loose ball after keeper Louis Connor did well to stop a Harrison Biggins shot from the edge of the area. The valuable three points keep them in the hunt for a play-off place. Although the first half was a dull affair, Steels had most of the chances. On 16 minutes, Harrison Biggins’ long range free kick flashed past the post. Both Matt Reay and Scott Ruthven had difficult chances with Ruthven’s chip saved by Connor. Reay headed just wide from a Hinchliffe free kick. Ashley Burbeary’s chip, which Connor did well to save, was the highlight of the first half, but both teams went into the break having had many clear cut opportunities. The second half was a bit livelier although there were very few chances. Berbeary had a shot saved by Conner low to his right, the keeper doing well to push it out for a corner. Both Harrison Biggins and Nat Crofts miscued half chances, but it was Stocksbridge who came out winners. The victory followed hot on the heels of Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Romulus with Adam Hinchcliffe hitting the winner. Steels now face Kidsgrove at home on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.

Church put four past Dronfield PENISTONE Church took a convincing 4-0 win against Dronfield Town on Saturday with two goals in each half. Duncan Richards and James Young were on target in the first half and after the break, Andy Ring and Danny Joynes added to the tally. After the game Church manager Ian Richards commented: “An excellent result and performance today, we controlled both halves and totally dominated the game. “There were some very good individual performances but the team performance was good, it’s an excellent response to the disappointment of two weeks ago against Pontefract. “We used the two weeks to re-group train well and prepare right and as I’ve said before we’ve only lost four games this season, the fewest amount in this league, we’ve kept the highest number of clean sheets, we’ve conceded the fewest amount of goals and what we’ve done every time we’ve lost is we’ve made sure we’ve won the next game. “Good teams lose games but the best teams make sure they put it right the following game and we’ve done that again today. I’m really pleased with the way we’ve handled the game, controlled, imposed and dictated the tempo and the play and it was never in doubt.”
