celebs rally for chapeltown school appeal THURSDAY is World Book Day and pupils in one Sheffield school will be celebrating their love of reading by hearing about the favourite books of inspirational authors and local celebrities, after a number of literature loving legends responded to the school’s call for help. Windmill Hill Primary School in Chapeltown launched their Book Explorers Club for pupils on World Book Day in March last year. This year to celebrate the one year anniversary of the club they made an appeal to get some ‘big names’ to complete their ‘Caught Reading’ posters and help inspire a love of reading by showing that even adult celebrities love reading too. The appeal was heard and met by BBC breakfast and BBC sports presenter Dan Walker, TV sports presenter Charlie Webster, Lord David Blunkett, and authors Caryl Hart (How to grow a Dinosaur), Peter Garner (Vince the Invincible) and Sue Day (Who your friends are). The celebrity posters set to inspire the pupils will be unveiled during a special World Book Day assembly at school on Thursday March 2. Jackie Williams from the Friends of Windmill Hill parents organisation, who help the school to run the Book Explorers Club, said: “One of the key parts of the Book Explorers Club is to show our kids that adults that they look up to love reading too, and we do that with our ‘Caught Reading’ posters. “The posters feature pictures of the adults reading their favourite books with details about what and why they love reading. “So far we’ve mostly featured teachers and adults who work in the school such as the rugby coach

REPONSE: One of the celebrities to be featured in the posters is BBC presenter Dan Walker.

(and Santa at Christmas!) but for World Book Day we decided to think big! “We’re delighted that we did because now we have some really inspiring posters for the kids – to show them that truly everyone loves reading! Windmill Hill School head teacher Joanne Grantham explained: “Last year we were looking at new innovative ways to inspire a love of reading in our pupils, and the Book Explorers Club was born. “Working with our parents organisation, Friends of Windmill Hill we are able to bring our children fun monthly reading related activities, exciting reading displays around school and the chance to win or buy reduced price books. “Over the past year the club has gone from strength to strength and we are really excited to be celebrating its one year anniversary in this innovative way on World Book Day. The showcasing of any Caught Reading posters that the school receive from local celebrities to the children will be one of a range of activities taking place at the school on World Book Day – Thursday March 2. Other activities will include a book themed fancy dress day, reading workshops, activities involving Chapeltown Library and talks from local author Peter Garner.

KILLED: Aseel Al-Essaie, 23, was shot outside a barber shop in Walkley.

Arrests made after murder of young man TWO people have been arrested on Monday February 27 in connection with the death of Aseel Al-Essaie in Sheffield earlier this month. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and a 23-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain in police custody being questioned by officers. Five people remain on bail in connection with the investigation and enquiries are ongoing. Mr Al-Essaie was shot at around 1.35pm on Saturday February 18 in Daniel Hill, Walkley. He was taken to hospital, where he died. Last week, four people arrested in connection with the death of Aseel were bailed.

A 57-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting offenders, a 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder, a 16-year-old boy and a 15year-old boy arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder have all now been bailed pending further enquiries. A 30-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, was bailed earlier that week pending further enquiries. Detectives investigating his death remain keen to hear from anyone with information about the incident. If you have any information, please call 101 quoting incident number 571 of 18 February 2017. You can also give information to Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.

Penalties to double for using mobile phone behind the wheel THE South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is again warning motorists of the dangers of using their mobile phones whilst driving, as the penalties for doing so are set to double. From March 1 2017, drivers caught using a hand held mobile phone while driving will see the penalty increased from three points and a £100 fine to six points and a £200 fine. The changes mean that newly qualified drivers – who can only gain six points before being banned – risk losing their licences if caught using their phone. Studies show that drivers using a hands-free or handheld mobile phone are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards. Even careful drivers can be distracted by a call or text – and a split-second lapse in concentration could result in a crash. A government consultation in 2016 found overwhelming support for increasing the fines and

penalty points for drivers using hand-held mobile phones. In addition, the findings of an RAC report on motoring suggest a significant worsening in both attitude and behaviour among drivers to using a mobile for making calls and checking social media. Drivers who are caught twice for the offence will automatically appear in court and face a fine of £1,000 and a driving ban of at least six months. Over the next few months, the Safer Roads Partnership will be doubling their efforts to encourage drivers not to use their mobile while driving and as part of this will be promoting the changes to the penalties. They will support and promote the Police’s enforcement campaigns related to mobile phone use as well as delivering the message via billboard and bus advertising across the county.

Visitor numbers soar at new leisure centres NEW figures have revealed massive increases in participation rates at Sheffield’s new state-ofthe-art leisure centres.

At Thorncliffe, in High Green, members can use a six-lane 25m swimming pool and learner pool, two workout studios, and a gym.

Thorncliffe Leisure Centre both opened last year, operated by Places for People Leisure (P4P) in partnership with Sheffield City Council.

The old gym floor at Wisewood, meanwhile, was expanded to four times its original size and kitted out with brand-new equipment, while the changing rooms, reception area and fitness studio also underwent a facelift.

P4P has also carried out a near-£1m transformation of Wisewood Sports Centre, in Laird Road, Wadsley, which was officially reopened by boxer Kell Brook in November. Now, figures from the leisure operator show that visits to Graves have more than doubled in less than a year, from 21,026 visits for the month of April 2016 to 43,054 for the month of January 2017. At Thorncliffe – a brand-new centre – the total number of swimmers is up by 90 per cent compared to parallel attendance figures from the former Chapeltown baths. There has also been a marked increase in junior swimming, due to more children going to swimming lessons and also enjoying fun swim sessions. And at Wisewood, gym membership has soared by a massive 650 per cent between April 2016 and January 2017, meaning that the centre has been able to recruit four new members of staff.

All centres have a wide range of fitness classes available, ranging from gentler sessions such as aqua fit and yoga through to belly dancing, spinning and Body Pump. The centres at Graves and Thorncliffe are also on the same site as FA football hubs as part of the “Parklife” grassroots football scheme, and have all-weather pitches as well as education rooms and changing facilities. Richard Cowley, Area Manager at Places for People Leisure, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working in partnership with Sheffield City Council to ensure that we meet the needs of the local community and encourage more people to participate in physical activity. “Our goal at Places for People Leisure is to create active places and healthy people and I am confident that the impressive new centres will provide more opportunities for the local community to get more active.”

PUPILS from Stocksbridge High School were rewarded for their hard work with a trip to a local coffee shop last Wednesday. The Head Boy and Head Girl took 16 students to Central Bean at Fox Valley for a reward. These are students who have all shown to have an outstanding attitude towards school as well as making good progress. Students spent a couple of hours enjoying hot chocolate and cookies provided by the wonderful staff at Central Bean.

A spokesperson for the school told Look Local: “This was part of a reward scheme that our prefects are working towards building in order to form better relationships between the students as well as the community! “They are working on hard to raise the attitude and attainment of our students through the recognition that this reward system brings and we are really proud to have such active leadership amongst students within our school. “Thank you to all the staff at Coffee Bean for their support.”

A Window of Opportunity In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local double-glazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.

Ian Clancy at the start of his business career.

The very first door made by Deepcar in 1978

A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom showing off the latest range of products from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise Businessman of the year’

Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working- order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service. He continues “ In today's busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe, who show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities to their father are now helping the successful window company build on the 36 years of trading.

After nearly four decades of providing unparalleled products and service, Deepcar invite you to view the latest in home improvements at their new showroom. If its experience, quality and reliability you are looking for look no further than Deepcar.

JUSTDANCE Studios have just returned from a breathtaking few days performing in Disneyland, Paris.

Sheryl told Look Local: “It wasn’t an easy task to arrange and prepare for this trip but it was all worthwhile in the end.

Twenty students stormed the stage with a cowgirl themed production which wowed and amazed their audience.

“We want to thank all the parents and families who helped them fundraise to get there and a special thanks to Claire Shaw for their spectacularly unique costumes.

They received comments that their performance was one of the best the park has seen, was very exciting to watch and engaging to spectators.

“With a group of 43 people in total who went to Paris this is an experience they will never forget and they know firmly believe dreams really can come true!”

The dance school auditioned for this fabulous opportunity last year and were delighted when they received the news they had been accepted to dance and show off their talents in the world famous Videopolis Theatre in the French Disney resort.

BARNSLEY MUM LOOKS TO HELP SAVE WENTWORTH CASTLE GARDENS

A BARNSLEY mum of two has started a collection in an attempt to try and save Wentworth Castle Gardens. The gardens are set to close to the public due to a financial shortfall. The Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust, who manage the attraction, made the shock announcement a month ago. John Edwards, chair of the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust, said in a statement: “It is with sadness we have decided that the gardens will have to close to the public from spring 2017. “In recent years we have not been able to make enough money to cover the running costs required

to manage the site and keep the gardens open as a year round visitor attraction. “As a result of this, we are working with the support of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to manage the closure. “We would like to give assurance that every effort will be made to honour all existing weddings and celebratory events for 2017 and we will contact all parties directly. “We have taken this difficult decision towards a managed closure of the site in the expectation that a sustainable future can be found. “We are working hard to ensure that this beautiful and historic Grade I listed landscape will be maintained and the gardens preserved for many generations to come.

But Emma Robinson, 36, is desperate for the gardens to remain open and although she says she doesn’t know how much it will take to keep the attraction open, she just wants to help. As well as starting a JustGiving site, Emma says she also plans to write to Prince Charles to appeal to him for help. “We’re raising ÂŁ5,000 to keep the beautiful gardens at Wentworth Castle open to the public. They are due to close spring 2017 due to lack of funding. “I learnt via a statement that the gardens at Wentworth Castle do not raise enough money to pay for the ongoing maintenance to keep them open to the public. As such, they will be closing. “This is a dreadful loss of a beautiful place. My children and I, as well as many, many people in

Barnsley and the surrounding areas take great pleasure from visiting these stunning gardens... for the rhododendrons alone! They are my place of solitude and relaxation. “Barnsley, and the UK, will really lose somewhere special if they close and I’m not willing to let that happen without a fight. “I’ve no idea how much they cost or what money we need, just wanted to do something on this sad day. “I’m sure with some changes and a bit of clever thinking the gardens could be making much more money, they could be a goldmine for a canny investor!

“Making it count.” 3 months’ membership for just £59 Gym, classes and individual support TO celebrate the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire, which finishes at Fox Valley on April 30, Welcome to Yorkshire has launched its annual land art competition and is now on the hunt for the county’s best installations. Last year’s competition proved a huge success with massive, eye-catching pieces being displayed right along the race route, and businesses, landowners, farmers, schools and community groups are all being encouraged to get creative once again. Whether it’s a church spire draped in a blue jersey, a field housing a mammoth bicycle, or a market square spelling out messages of support, all works are welcomed and stand a great chance of being beamed to over 11 million people in 178 countries when the race’s live television helicopters sweep across the county. Last year a giant piece of art featuring a horse, ram and wild boar riding a penny farthing on Sutton Bank - commissioned by the North York Moors National Park Authority and Hambleton District Council - was crowned the winner after an international public vote, and the coveted trophy is now up for grabs once again.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Yorkshire’s land art has attracted a lot of attention in the past, with people creating everything from multi-coloured sheep and spotty houses, to huge murals and striking street art. “These fantastic pieces really bring the race to life and give you the chance to celebrate your community. We want you to shout to the world about what Yorkshire has to offer.” How to enter: 1. Send in plans, pictures and designs, and include information about what inspired the piece, how it will be made and where will it be. This will then be shared with TV producers before the race in the hope of catching the cameras. Submit entries and any questions you may have to Danny Roberts on droberts@yorkshire.com 2. Welcome to Yorkshire will shortlist the 12 best land art pieces over the three days of action. 3. The shortlisted entries will then be put to a public vote and one lucky winner will receive our coveted land art trophy! For more information competition visit letouryorkshire.com/landart

Local News Barnsley photographer captures dementia sufferers and carers

2 MARCH 2017 | Look Local - 946

BARNSLEY photographer Adrian Ashworth is probably most well-known for his images of Yorkshire and the Peak District. He has also previously been a professional photographer for Barnsley Metropolitan Council, covering official engagements and live music events. However, Adrian’s focus suddenly changed two years ago when his father was diagnosed with Dementia.

Adrian explains: “Throughout my life, my dad Alan was by far the smartest man I have ever known. He was a whizz with maths and never failed to amaze me. Dad used his brilliant mind all through his working life eventually retiring as a Senior Lecturer in business studies from Richmond College Sheffield aged only 55. He is now is now 84 years old and living in a retirement home where people care and protect him. Rewind two years and dad was my accountant. “I am no expert in Dementia but knowing my dad and how fastidious he was with being right in numeracy, I realised there was something wrong. I made several appointments with the doctors for dad to see someone only for him to deny any problems and not attend, he still denies to this day that he has any memory issues other than those associated with “I’m 84 you know”. “Somewhere In Time is a way of doing something special for those living with dementia, their partners and loved ones –to relive a moment or something unique about their past and share their

stories. It will also hopefully help raise awareness of what these families so often go through together.”

Discovering the work of BIADS (Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s And Dementia Support) and meeting their staff, enabled Adrian to discuss his idea of documenting the stories of those living with Dementia and BIADS helped to put his idea out to the families they worked with. Many took up the offer of sitting for a portrait and sharing their stories. One of the first was Gareth. “When Gareth was younger, he was an aspiring actor. After leaving university, he appeared in several short films and even acted alongside stars as Matthew Modine, Vanessa Redgrave, Daryl Hannah, Jon Voight and Sir Richard Attenborough.” “In 2010 Gareth started showing recognizable signs of Dementia and in 2011, he moved back in with his mum and dad in Goldthorpe as home life was becoming unbearable for his partner and her children. Gareth was just 36 when he was diagnosed with Dementia. He is 40 now and resides at a specialist care home. Gareth’s story became national news and in many respects it has brought this family closer together. His parent talk openly about their experiences, they are a fountain of knowledge on the subject of dementia and speak frequently at meetings, TV and support clinics.”

know who in the portrait has dementia. Some are fairly straight forward due to age gaps but this isn’t always the case and some are impossible to tell.

Each image or group of images has a story to tell and as Adrian explains, “the title of the exhibition, ‘somewhere in time’ is where their world stopped, be it a child dying or the moment their partner forgot their name. The images are a way to remind us all how frail our existence is and that far more importantly to just viewing the images with a The images in the exhibition are all black and white thought of who has dementia we should be seeing and lay bare the soul of the person living with the one things that remains is all of these people’s dementia and the carer. It isn’t always easy to always lives is LOVE.”

More outside play at Appletree Nursery APPLETREE Childcare, based in Grenoside, was delighted to welcome staff from Leeds Building Society’s Sheffield branch who visited to see what the nursery had purchased with a £965 donation received from Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation. Appletree Childcare has used the donation to purchase equipment for their outdoor area such as sensory toys, soft blocks, sand and water trays and toys and chalk boards. This equipment will engage the children to socialise with one another and will contribute towards their motor and cognitive development. Janet Parkin, Chief Executive Officer at Appletree Childcare, said: “It is really important that children spend

time outside and that they have stimulating activities. “This grant has enabled us to buy some lovely resources that will help all our children, including those most disadvantaged, to develop. We are very grateful to Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation for their support.” “The Charitable Foundation is delighted to make this donation and support Appletree Childcare,” said Emma Cooper, Branch Manager “The Society and our members fund Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation, and this donation fits with our commitment to doing what’s right for our members, colleagues and communities.”

Some of the portraits will make you laugh, in others you’ll share their pain; all real people sharing real stories from our community, coping to their best with such a debilitating condition that cannot be undone. Award win for firefighters clean up The skate park had been due to be opened that day, but was deliberately targeted by vandals who left washing up liquid covering the area. The crew members Wayne Severn, Matthew Craig, Alan Barraclough and Dave Rogers set straight to work wash-

ing, scrubbing and rinsing the washing up liquid away. As a way of thanking the fire crew for their assistance the Parish Council has now awarded the crew The Chairman’s Award in recognition for their hard work and community spirit.

Crew Manager Matthew Craig said: “The park was due to be opened that day, we did what we did to enable the opening ceremony to still go ahead for the local people. We are really honoured to have been chosen for this award and are very pleased that we were able to help out.”

Beloved wife of Peter passed away on the 1st March 2016 Greatly missed but not forgotten

AGE UK has welcomed a new travel pass process developed by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) that has already benefitted over 40,000 senior residents across South Yorkshire. The innovative new automatic renewal process removes the need for older people to reapply for their English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) Senior Pass, making it easier for passengers to take advantage of free and discounted fares on public transport. Age UK Sheffield Chief Executive, Steve Chu, said: “Getting out and about to meet friends or go to the shops is vital to ensuring older people can live independently and happily at home. This new process will make it easier for older people in South Yorkshire to benefit from the free and discounted fare to which they are entitled.” The move means senior travellers across South Yorkshire whose travel passes expire in 2017 will now have their pass automatically reissued and delivered direct to their door four weeks before their previous pass expires. Customers are only required to get in touch if they have moved house, or want to update their details or photo. Customers applying for their first ENCTS pass will need to apply in the usual way, online at travelsouthyorkshire.com, via a paper application from an interchange or by calling Traveline on 01709 515151. More information on ENCTS passes can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/seniorrenew More information on Age UK Sheffield can be found at ageuk.org.uk/sheffield

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience with Sheffield based national company Collective Legal Solutions. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

I propose a possible solution, ‘Halfway Hotels’, purpose built convalescent accommodation in the grounds of the Northern General Hospital and any other hospital where possible. These buildings could be basic, to save costs, but clean and modern, allowing former patients time to get their personal arrangements in order while not occupying precocious hospital beds. AS a nation we all enjoy eating out in restaurants, cafes and bars. It gives us the opportunity to have someone else cook, serve and allows us to try something new. However, as with everything, there are pros and cons with restaurant dining which are worth exploring.

TRY A TASTE OF TRADITION AT

the

nags head inn

With our daily lives getting busier as the years role on, convenience and time saving measures are more and more important to us. Having someone cook for and serve you removes the worry of going to the supermarket and spending time preparing meals. Eating out allows us to continue with our hectic schedules whilst still satisfying our culinary appetites.

We all enjoy trying something new and embracing different cultures and traditions. Restaurants in towns and cities across the UK are specialising in all types and styles of menus allowing us to sample exotic cuisines from across the globe. A key benefit of eating in restaurants is that it provides the opportunity to try something that normally we wouldn’t cook or serve ourselves. As paying guests we all have certain expectations regarding quality and service within restaurants. Although generally service and quality over the decades has improved considerably if we are not satisfied we have the right to complain and demand improvements. This key benefit should result in a consistent standard and value for your hard earned cash. Everyone enjoys the sense of occasion and atmosphere of eating out, whether it be a family occasion or a romantic candle lit dinner for two. Making the effort to dine out is and always will be one of our favourite pastimes and a way to mark an anniversary, birthday or celebration.

Sowing the seeds of

summer March brings some sunny days to tempt gardeners back into the garden, and many of us are really aching for Spring now!

This is the month for sowing seeds and getting the garden ready for the summer months ahead, which includes a general tidy up and some essential pruning. Pruning is not only therapeutic for plants, but gardeners as well – getting rid of all that dead wood and preparing for new growth and flowers. You need to remove dead, diseased or damaged stems from roses. Shrubs and climbers will also need pruning to encourage good, healthy growth. Seed sowing should be at the top of your ‘to do’ list at the moment. Give seeds soil that is wet and warm enough and off they go, and the bigger the seed the deeper it needs to be in the soil to germinate.

Some seeds can be sown direct into the ground, such as vegetables, whilst some prefer to be in seed trays and a slighter warmer environment to be given a good fighting chance. March is also a good planting time for more mature plants, so think ahead to not just Summer but Autumn as well and try to plan your planting for all year round colour in the garden. For a bit of instant colour you could think about a hanging basket. A simple garden solution for March is to create your own hanging basket in the colour scheme of your choice mixing hardy annuals with small evergreen shrubs for all year round interest.

2 MARCH 2017 | Look Local - 946 Home and Garden

Although most baskets are planted in early spring and put outdoors after the risk of frost has passed, they can also be filled with frost hardy flowers and tough evergreens for colour over winter. Don’t forget to water regularly and boost growth with a weekly liquid feed.

arching stems soon make an attractive carpet of bright green foliage. The small sky-blue flowers appear in spring and Vinca will grow in most soil types but like most other plants, requires good drainage.

A plant perfect for winter baskets and containers is the Vinca, which is part of the periwinkle family.

Yorkshire Thermography Services is a local, family run business based in Sheffield, offering thermal imaging solutions at realistic prices.

WE WOULD LIKE TO OFFER YOUR HOME A ‘HEALTH CHECK’ Your home is probably the biggest financial investment that you make, and its structural condition and the services that run within it such as water and electricity need to be in a safe condition for your peace of mind and to protect your homes value.

You may even consider having a Yorkshire Thermography Services survey as an extra health check on a new property that you may be thinking of purchasing.

Thermal imaging is non invasive so it is not necessary to knock holes in walls or remove floor boards to carry out the survey. All that we ask is that that your services are turned on and operational when we carry out the survey. The thermal imaging camera can ‘see’ problems that are invisible to the human eye. This includes cabling and pipe work that are hidden inside walls and under floorboards. A selection of just some of the many problems that thermal imaging can detect are listed below:

Exterior of the house Thermal imaging will identify: * Heat loss through wall, roofs, fascias, doors and windows. * Missing or patchy insulation. Heat loss = big bills. * Faulty chimneys and flues. Escaping gases are invisible and can be fatal. * Leaking flat roofs. * No damp proof course.

Interior of the house Thermal imaging will identify: * Hot spots in electrical cabling, overloaded circuits, pumps, motors. These could cause a fire. * Accurately pinpoint problems with underfloor heating systems, and systems with radiators. No need to lift all the floor up, just the problem area. * Damp problems. A fresh coat of paint may fool the human eye, but not the camera. * Draught problems * Disaster Recovery - in the event of flooding, thermal imaging will identify where heaters should be positioned for maximum effects.

Bridge began to push for the win as Knottingly failed to get a foot hold in the game. Brown got over the line, again from close range, but was judged to have lost the ball forward. Despite having multiple attempts to score ruled out by the referee Ben Brown (sponsored by Sid’s Fish Bar) finally registered the score that would win Stocksbridge the game, blasting over on the fringes of the ruck. Holding a 12-7 lead there was a tense finish to the game, as a series of penalties awarded in Knottingly’s favour saw them edge toward the try line. Whitaker would watch the remaining phases from the bin, as Stocksbridge looked to hold out with 14 men. And hold out they did, turning over possession on their own line to preserve the victory on the day. Stocksbridge thoroughly deserved the points as they dominated the leagues highest performers across the 80 minutes, proving their worth in Yorkshire Three. The Man of the Match award was shared by Adam Frith (sponsored by Brian Mills Decorating Services) and Gary Woodcock, who made outstanding contributions from scrum half and prop respectively.

Sport & Motors2 MARCH 2017 | Look Local - 946 IT has been a busy weekend of racing across the country for Penistone Footpath Runners. Pride of place goes to the seven athletes who made the journey down the M1 to take part in the English National Cross Country Championships at Woollaton Park, Nottingham. The event, whose history stretches back to the 1880s, brings together the best club runners from around the country and the races were run in very challenging conditions this year. Two junior athletes took part, Morgan Crussell finishing 456th in the U13 girls and Hugh Mackie 304th in the U13 boys race. In the senior men’s event, Shaun Dimelow finished 549th, Jon Waller 630th, Richard Mackie 953rd, Simon Pike 1008th and Gary Dean 1497th. A large contingent of runners made their way over to the Hoppits Hill Race, run over 5k from Lower Hopton Cricket Club near Mirfield. Sam Shaw made it a hat-trick of race victories, coming home as first lady in a time of 25.24. Tom Randall was the first male home in 22:38 and there were age category wins for Robin Clough (V40), Steve Storey (V60), Julie Darigala, (LV40) Julia Johnson (LV50), Bernice Nixon (LV60) and Barbara Haigh (LV70). Jonathan Bentley took part in the British Heart Foundation half marathon at Harewood House, the ancestral home of the Lascelles family, near Leeds, The race was on rough terrain, across muddy tracks and fields and Jonathan finished in 1:43.52 Four runners took part in the Huddersfield 10k, with Andy Walch first back for the club in 49.17 on the hilly course. Seuranie Johnstone was first lady back in 55.17. Two Penistone runners made their way to West Yorkshire for the Midgley Moor fell race in Booth, Halifax, a challenging AS race involving route choice on paths and heather moor. The fell race is classified as five miles Cross Country Captain Simon Pike strides out at (8.04km)/1250ft (381m). John Tomlinson finished 27th and Lee Bridgewater 47th. the National XC Championships

PENISTONE Church went down 2-1 to Hall Road Rangers on a heavy pitch at the weekend. Josh Batty and Jack Binns were on target for the home side with Danny Joynes scoring a late consolation for Church. Oughtibridge WMFC were brought crashing back down to Earth after their win last week over Penistone Church Sunday side with an embarrassing display when they were thrashed 7-2 by third placed Killarmarsh Juniors. After the home side took an early lead Chas Tunnard and new signing Matt Harrison turned the game in its head and just when the away side looked like they were going to take their lead into the half time break Harley Schofield was caught in possession and the scores were level. Then in the second half Killarmarsh added a further five goals as Oughtibridge collapsed and in all fairness had keeper Paul Cadman to thank that the host’s only scored seven. In junior football, Stocksbridge Park Steels under 12s drew 1-1 with Worksop Town with Hennessey on target. The under 13 side lost 2-0 to Beighton and the under 15s also lost to SUJB. However, the under 14 side ran out 6-2 winners against Greasborough with Lee and Twyford scoring twice each. Their other goals came through Sessions and Illingworth-Ralph.

Stocksbridge PS 0–2 Kidsgrove By Jordan Sheppard

THIS is a game that will be remembered mostly for a second-half incident in which two Stocksbridge Park Steels players, Ash Burbeary and Corey Gregory, came to blows with each other and were sent off, resulting in Steels playing the remainder of the game with nine men. The club has yet to issue an official statement. Five minutes into the game Steels had first chance when a through ball from Liam McFadyen to Nathaniel Crofts enabled the winger to go on 25 yard run. Crofts passed to Brodie Litchfield, who was unable to control it enough to test Kidsgroves keeper Chris Martin. The lively Nat Crofts showing some great skills and once again crossed the ball into Litchfield, who in turn found out Burbeary. But his shot was well saved by the keeper. Harrison Biggins had a decent shot on goal but Kidsgrove’s right back Leon Ashman was on hand to put the ball out for a corner. Against the run of play Kidsgrove broke the deadlock. Ross Davison’s shot was parried away by David Reay straight into the path of Arron Johns

who calmly slotted home from close range. The visitors had a chance minutes later when Ben Mills had a shot but Steels keeper David Reay was on hand to make a good save. Just before the break there was nearly a costly mistake from Steels by captain Liam McFadyen but again David Reay saved from Ben Mills. The second half started with neither side making any real chances. But ten minutes after the restart, Brodie Litchfield chipped the ball in the box to Scott Ruthven but his effort was saved by Chris Martin. The main talking point of the second half came when Burbeary and Gregory were sent off for fighting with each other after standing over a free kick on the half way line. Despite being reduced to nine, Steels upped their efforts and in the closing stages of the match, they had three corners in quick succession with keeper David Reay going up to help out. After a scramble in the visitors’ area, the ball appeared to be handled by a defender but the referee didn’t see it and as Kidsgrove broke quickly, Harry Clayton shot into an open goal to finish the game.

Season opener free entry

Nine-man Steels lose

OUT OF LUCK: Stocksbridge keeper David Reay went up for a corner but was caught out on the counter.

SHEFFIELD Tigers speedway team are offering free admission to all supporters for their season opener against Somerset. The Tigers will host last year’s Premier League Champions in a special challenge at Owlerton on Thursday, March 30 in what promises to be an exciting meeting to kickstart the new campaign. Club bosses announced the promotion at a special pre-season talk-in at the stadium on Thursday - and the news was well received by supporters. The club’s pre-season talk-in saw 2017 team members Kyle Howarth, Josh Bates and Jack Parkinson-Blackburn quizzed by a large contingent of supporters ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
