call for road danger action
THE community of Oughtibridge gathered to show their support of a petition asking Sheffield City Council to review the road safety measures at a busy junction. Parents and pupils from Bradfield School and Oughtibridge Primary School attended, along with cyclists and residents of the area. There have been four accidents requiring hospital attention in the last five weeks on the Forge Hill zebra crossing and near misses are reported on almost a daily basis.
Local resident Terry Barrow collected over 700 signatures on a petition and presented it to a Sheffield City Council meeting. Terry said at the meeting: “The drive to build homes and redevelop brownfield sites the Upper Don Valley is significant. There are already plans for several large sites and the potential for more. Traffic from each one will have to pass through our already congested village. “Each proposal is treated piecemeal with residents left to live with the cumulative effect of the developments. “Then an application came in to build on Jawbone Hill. It wasn’t the housing that prompted this petition. It was the cheap and ill-considered solution to provide pedestrian access to the site that angered people. “They are proposing putting traffic lights on the railway bridge on Jawbone! Anyone who lives or commutes here knows this would cause chaos

The junction where the crossing is has cars coming from three different directions and drivers have a lot to take in as they approach.
Oughtibridge residents and road users showed their support for the changes on Tuesday afternoon.

So I agreed to start a petition - talking to people in the village as well as using online community social media. “It soon became clear there were other connected issues that concerned people. For example, the safety of people using the zebra crossing on the lower A6102. People were getting in touch - almost daily - about near misses, car shunts and other non reportable incidents. “And this crossing is only about 10 metres from a very complex junction, with unclear traffic priorities. “In the four weeks since starting this petition there have been three serious accidents, two involving cyclists and one motorbike. All three riders required hospital treatment. “So the traffic system in the village is broken and the number of reported accidents is now significant, let alone non - reportable ones. This can only get worse as more and more vehicle movements are added as developments come on stream. The proposed traffic lights on Jawbone, Jawbone’s junction with the A6102 and the zebra crossing are symbiotic.” The petition calls for a number of actions to be taken, including a full review of the traffic system in the village, taking into account both existing and projected traffic flows. It also asks for a separate foot and cycle bridge being a made a condition of any planning application above the railway line on Jawbone. A site visit was also requested and this was granted, although the date has yet to be confirmed.

ACC Barber presents John Halstead from Mountain Rescue Team with the commendation
FOR the volunteers making up the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team, a day, or a night, after a full working day can mean heading out again to work in treacherous conditions or through the dead of night, all to help save a life. Members of the team, based at Hepworth in Holmfirth, have been awarded for their efforts in rescuing – and ultimately saving the life of – a 77-year-old man, who found himself lost on the moors. On the evening of Tuesday 8 November, at about 7pm, South Yorkshire Police call handlers received a 999 call from the man, who was lost on the Langsett moor, near Penistone. At that time of night, it was dark, there was snow on the ground and the temperature was falling rapidly. Superintendent Paul McCurry, who commanded the operation, said: “Immediately, we called the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team as we knew that without them, we’d have immense trouble rescuing this man and ensuring his safety. “Straight away, the team deployed volunteers who went in search of the man with hot drinks and a basic first aid kit. Further parties were also sent to different locations, while a party with a stretcher was also dispatched. “After a six hour search and rescue mission the man was located, thankfully before he could come to any real harm, although his health was deteriorating rapidly and he was in a hypothermic state.
“Due to treacherous weather conditions, the helicopter could not land to airlift the man to hospital and so the Mountain Rescue Team carried him over one-and-a-half miles over rough and slippery terrain in the pitch-black to an awaiting 4x4. “Without the team and their efforts in this challenging rescue mission, it’s unlikely that the man would have survived the night. “I’m incredibly thankful for their continued efforts and support in callouts and search and rescue efforts. “Their help is truly invaluable to us and to the friends and family of those loved ones who go missing or get in to difficulties while out walking for example.” Supt McCurry and Assistant Chief Constable Rachel Barber presented the team with a Chief Officer Commendation for their efforts, at their headquarters on Monday 6 March Supt McCurry added: “Last year alone the team members dedicated over 2,000 hours of their time to callouts from police, which amounted to 37 callouts in total. “Their efforts are truly amazing and have saved the lives of countless people. We are incredibly grateful to be able to call upon them and I’m proud to have presented them with this well-deserved commendation.”

Veterans breakfast club launches
VETERANS Breakfast Club launches on Saturday March 18 at 9.30am at the Wagon and Horses Wetherspoons in Chapeltown. Chapeltown Veterans Breakfast Club is the latest club in the National Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club network with clubs of all over the UK. These clubs provide an environment where former members of the Armed Services can tell stories and re-live the good old days. One member of the club, Spike Mayston, was a petty officer in the Royal Navy. He told Look Local: “Anyone who has served in the armed forces knows and understands the military banter that exists right across all three of the armed services. “I am a proud former member of the Royal Navy and the sense of humour that was entrenched in me as a young sailor is still with me today. “To give you a light hearted example; my submariner (bubble head) friends (oppos) call me a ‘Target’.

“We both refer to the Army as Percy Pongos; because everywhere the Army goes, the Pong Goes. “To have regular meet-ups, big eats and belly laughs with like minded ex-service men and women in Chapeltown is a welcomed part of my civy life.”
Gulf War One veteran Tracy Menday runs the group
The Chapeltown Veterans Breakfast Club is open to all serving and former members of the Armed Services from communities in Sheffield including Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Stocksbridge and Penistone regardless of service, rank or when served. Tracy Menday, founder of Chapeltown Veterans Breakfast Club, explains: “There is a real need for these clubs, not only as a social environment but as a support mechanism. “Our aim is for Chapeltown Veterans Breakfast Club to support veterans in the community, especially those of an older generation and for those who have experienced conflict. “From my experience with other clubs, veterans can openly talk to other veterans, this simple line of communication is so beneficial to our well being. Some veterans indeed still find it extremely difficult to talk about their experiences with friends or family members even after decades.” All veterans, servicemen men and women will be most welcomed at the launch. There are no subscriptions or club rules just a social get together. MP Angela Smith will be joining the launch of the club accompanied by her husband Steve. “My husband grew up in Chapeltown and is a Royal Navy veteran, so I think he will feel at home!” Angela Smith MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge remarked.

Campaign to save Smithy Wood SHEFFIELD and Rotherham Wildlife Trust is once again calling on the people of Sheffield to help save the ancient woodland, Smithy Wood, as a highly controversial proposal to build an 80bed hotel, car park and fast food court is set to be considered by Sheffield City Council’s planning committee on Tuesday March 28 at 10am in the Town Hall. The Trust is asking local people to write to their local councillor and ask them to save the ancient woodland while there is still time to influence the decision. They are also holding a peaceful protest on Saturday March 18 at 11.30am outside the Town Hall, to which all are welcome.
“Our litter picks carry the message that as a community we want to do the land management and conservation work that Smithy Wood needs, however as the woodland remains in private ownership we collect litter from the public land adjacent to the woodland, ready to move in when the opportunity arises. Contacting your local councillor couldn’t be easier: simply visit www.wildsheffield.com/ smithywood for all you need to know about finding your local councillor and for ideas on what to say. The whole process takes 10 minutes and can have a real impact on securing the future of this ancient woodland.
After four years of campaigning alongside local residents and other environmental groups, Liz For further information, including the latest Ballard, CEO of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife details about the Trust’s planned peaceful protest, Trust, said: “We really need the help of local people please visit www.wildsheffield.com/smithywood to save this woodland. We are asking people to tell their local councillor that they want this woodland saved. We call on the planning committee councillors to see this application for what it is an opportunist proposal that will bring significant profits to a few instead of a fantastic public green space for the many. If ever there was a time to show our ‘outdoor city’ credentials this is it. Smithy Wood in Chapeltown is over 800 years old and part of a unique network of ancient woodlands. The wood is a key part of Sheffield’s rich, natural heritage and designated as a Local Wildlife Site in Sheffield’s green belt. It is much-loved by local people, who have regularly visited the wood and supports hundreds of different species of birds, animals, plants and fungi. The developer, MSA Extra, and the land owner, St Paul’s, are applying to build a retail park six times the size of a typical motorway service station with fast food outlets, such as McDonalds and Starbucks, and an 80-bed hotel. This service station would be on one of the safest stretches of road in the region that is already well served by other local businesses. The development would permanently destroy irreplaceable ancient woodland and diminish the green belt. Government guidance is clear – ancient woodlands cannot be compensated for by new tree planting or woodland management elsewhere. Ms Ballard added: “Our vision for Smithy Wood is to turn it into a fantastic woodland; a community asset that is well-managed, secure, safe and easily accessible to local families, school groups, walkers and cyclists. We firmly believe that with the Council’s help we could make this happen. The poor environmental stewardship of this land is plain to see. The land has been left unsecured and uncared for, and, over the last two to three years in particular, local residents have noticed a major increase in use of the site by off-road vehicles. This all benefits the developer. Smithy Wood is a beautiful bluebell woodland in spring and we really hope this spring will not be the last before the bluebells are replaced by tarmac. The people of Sheffield have already shown their overwhelming support for the Trust’s Save Smithy Wood campaign and we understand that Sheffield City Council has received an unprecedented number of objections from local people and from across the country. Nearly 1,000 objections are thought to have been submitted online, with the vast majority citing the loss of this important habitat for local wildlife as their key reason for opposing the application. A litter pick group regularly visits the woods and had a record number of 21 volunteers last weekend. Organiser of the pick, David Dickinson, told Look Local: “The 21 strong volunteer team who turned out today to clear litter from the roadside verges around Cowley Hill, Smithy Wood Road and some from within Smithy Wood. “Some were new faces to the litter picks, joining us from the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Ecclesfield Conservation Group, while others were concerned families, wanting to do their bit to help nature on their patch. “We filled around 29 bags and collected various other items of debris that included a drawer from a cash register from the Welcome Inn on Wortley Road that had been dumped in there, along with a domestic strong box safe.

A Window of Opportunity In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local double-glazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.
Ian Clancy at the start of his business career.
The very first door made by Deepcar in 1978
A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom showing off the latest range of products from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise Businessman of the year’
Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working- order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service. New Credit Union Service in Stocksbridge
Cllr Alan Law cuts ribbon while local volunteers are introduced to everybody attending. ON Monday March 6, Mayor of Stocksbridge Councillor Alan Law officially opened the new Credit Union point at The Meeting Place Social Café in the Community Hall at Christ Church, Stocksbridge. The information point offers a lot more than information, as it provides access to savings and loans products through the ethical, not-for-profit local lender and safe savings provider. Existing members can attend to apply for new products and enquire about their account. New members can join and set up the products they are interested in. The official opening was well attended and was a great way to show Stocksbridge residents how they
can avoid high cost lenders, doorstep lenders and loan sharks, as well as have access to a new way to save, particularly with the sparse availability of banks in the area. “It’s wonderful to be able to extend our ethical services into the Stocksbridge area, to benefit more local people and show them how the fair services we offer are suitable for everybody,” said Jackie Hallewell, CEO of Sheffield Credit Union. The information point will be open every Monday morning from 9.30am to 12 noon, where trained local volunteers will be able to assist enquirers and members.

POLICE are urging owners and drivers of Ford Transit vans to be vigilant after a number of reported thefts involving the vehicles, where thieves have managed to gain entry without forcing the locks. There have been a number of reports to police of thefts from Transit vans, but on each occasion no damage was done and it is believed the offenders are using a device to bypass the lock system.

www.pinemedia.net IT has been another successful contest for Deepcar Brass Band who came a creditable fourth in the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships in Huddersfield last weekend. The band also won the trophy for the best percussion, particularly noteworthy as the drummer is not yet 16.
It is the band’s best result in its 10 years of contesting at the Yorkshire area finals. The band is led by 23 year old Cathryn-Jane Rogers, one of the youngest and one of very few females to hold the post of musical director. The band is also pleased to announce that Broomhead Show will be taking place again on July 9 2017.

Hairy moment for charity A STOCKSBRIDGE woman had a close shave at The Hub Café last week as she had her long hair chopped for charity. Katie Holling, 26, meets friends at the café every Tuesday. But things took a turn for the unusual this time as Katie’s trainee hairdresser friend, Jade McIntyre of The Business hair salon, came along with her clippers and shaved all of her hair off for Macmillan Cancer Support’s ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign. Katie has raised a brilliant £745 so far and is donating her lost locks to the Princess Trust who make wigs for little girls who have lost their hair due to medical procedures. Katie told Look Local: “I just did it to support anyone who has suffered from cancer. We all know someone who has been affected. I’d like to thank everyone who has donated.”

But during the fight, he required urgent medical attention and was laid down on the canvas before an ambulance was called. In a statement before Scott’s death, Marsden’s All Styles Kickboxing in Hillsborough, a gym run by Scott’s father Simon, said: “The English title fight had to be stopped due to Scotty needing immediate medical attention. “The cards showed only one point between them in a very close shot for shot fight which could have gone either way on the score cards.
“Everyone is still in shock as there were simply no signs to suggest the fight needed to be stopped.

EASTER SUNDAY SPECIAL
Afternoon tea is served for Killimanjaro challenge ON Sunday March 5, Karen Marsden and CoffeeApple cafe hosted an afternoon tea for Dan and Calvin’s Killmanjaro Challenge for Weston Park.
Calvin and Dan’s whole fundraising initiative was born out of the fact that the hospital has had a huge impact on both of their families’ lives.
The boys are climbing the mountain in June this year and have been fundraising for the last 18 months to raise money for the Sheffield cancer hospital.
When deciding to take on Mt. Kilimanjaro as a charity challenge, there really was no other logical choice than Weston Park.
Cancer affects one in four people, including Karen herself who was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago.
Karen asked CoffeeApple to host the event as it is centrally located in Stocksbridge and has an excellent reputation for food and service, and on this occasion they did not disappoint with afternoon tea being served in two sittings to over 70 people.
With the care and nursing of Weston Park she is now a cancer survivor, so raising money for this was very important to her. Both Dan and Calvin have lost loved ones to cancer which is the reason for their charity challenge. The hospital provides world class services in research, treatment and care across many aspects of cancer.
There were sandwiches, cake, scones and tea aplenty, even a glass of fizz, which is Karen’s favourite tipple! The atmosphere was amazing with lots of laughter and chat about friends lost with photo albums and a message tree for guests to write memories on to treasure.
This was a fantastic event with lots of raffle prizes donated from local businesses such as Beachcomber, Oceanic, Floral Magic, Vision Health and Fitness and many, many more. It was so good to see so many local people turn up to support Dan and Calvin and help them raise £750 to their charity. This event could not have been such a success without the staff at CoffeeApple giving up their free time to bake and serve everyone who arrived. The generosity of the people of Stocksbridge is truly humbling and Karen, Calvin and Dan are extremely grateful to everyone involved. If you wish to support Calvin or Dan further please see their justgiving page at www.justgiving.com/kilimanjarowestonpark or follow their activities on facebook at www.facebook.com/kilimanjarowestonpark

I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Your Letters Angram Bank In response to Councillor Drayton’s letter in LL947, she states that the Children’s Centre will “still be delivering services as it is doing now. So why in the consultation was the question asked “What would you do if the services you use most moved location? Either go to the new location; go to the nearest location delivering the service; find another way of meeting my needs.

Sheffield should be improving the existing 16 Early Years Children’s Centres to get them all up to a Good standard. If it wants to build services to families over and above under fives from the existing centres, then it will help the local community. The current proposals will mean no oversight of the performance of Angram Bank by Ofsted, and the loss of a Stakeholder Group tasked with ensuring the centre runs efficiently and effectively.

The winner of the hamper, kindly supplied by the Co-op, was Pearl Bethal and Jennifer Harrison guessed correctly the weight of the Fairtade cake.
50 Shades of Green A few short steps from my front door, Is a place I walk and dream. For on those hills of Whitwell Moor, Are my 50 shades of green. I leave behind the urban streets, And soon forget my aching feet, For as my eyes take in the scene, I see my 50 shades of green.
Your Letters
Among those fields of drystone walls, Where often only songbirds call, Caught in the fall of running streams, Lie my lovely 50 shades of green. Whether summer warmth or winter chill, Autumnal leaves on Trip Point Hill, Snowdrops set in Springtime theme, Contained in 50 shades of green. So take someone or walk alone, And put away that mobile phone, Switch off that television screen, Go find my 50 shades of green.

Perhaps some factual information needs to be looked at? Sheffield with its 16 Early Years Children’s Centres has the lowest number of centres of any major city in the UK. Manchester has 43, Hull has 19, and Derby 18. The model Sheffield is following was implemented by Barnsley Metropolitan Mike Levery, Borough Council in 2014. They then had 19 Early Grenoside Years Children’s Centres, and moved to five Family Centres, five fully operational linked sites, and nine “outreach sites running timetabled services. Bolsterstone Churchyard The population they cover is two and a half times smaller than that of Sheffield City Council. Mothers Day at Staindrop Lodge 26th March 2017 Cod & smoked haddock fishcake with pea & parsley sauce
STOCKSBRIDGE mums Lindsey Fawcett and Holly Jones are swapping the school run for a tougher run as they prepare to compete in the Asics Greater Manchester Marathon.
Having maintained a regular training schedule throughout the winter, the pair are on target for a successful conclusion to the challenge on Sunday, April 2.
The friends both lost their dads to prostate cancer, with Lindsey’s dad Jim spending his final days as a patient at St Luke’s Hospice.
“We’ve managed 22 miles up to now so although the last four miles are the hardest, we’re hoping that adrenalin and the crowds will get us across the finish line on the day,” said Holly.”
It was seeing the standards of care that both Jim and the whole family received that inspired Lindsey to get into training for the marathon challenge. And when she heard about the event, Holly was happy to get into training and join her friend on the road. “Neither of us has ever done a full marathon before but having completed the Sheffield Half Marathon last year, we started doing longer runs together and we eventually started to talk about the possibility of signing up for a marathon,” said Lindsey. “We booked places on the Manchester Marathon because we knew after the Sheffield Half that it would at least be a flatter course!”

“The race of our lives”
Local Sport Husband and wife, Gareth and Jo Sutton, will take on the tough challenge.
Gareth and Jo Sutton, who live in Dungworth with their three children, are both doctors who qualified in Sheffield. Gareth currently works in Barnsley as a G.P and Jo has now re-trained as a personal trainer. Gareth has been sporty all his life and has had the Marathon des Sables on his “to do” list since he first came across it 20 years ago. Jo started her running much later, in her early 30s as a way of helping with depression. She became hooked and realised she could actually run. She gradually started increasing her distances, entering longer races and somewhere along the way entered the crazy world of ultra distance running. Jo says: “We decided two years ago we would go for it and just enter the MDS”. In 1984, Patrick Bauer, a Frenchman, walked 350 km in 12 days across the Sahara and had the idea to create an ultra marathon experience for others to enjoy and endure!. The event is divided into six stages, the longest of which is about 90km. Competitors run across endless scorching sand, steep dunes and rocky hills, known as jebels, in searing temperatures of 50*c. They must be self sufficient, carrying backpacks with their own food and equipment for the entire event and a daily ration of water. Each night communal tents are pitched for the weary runners to rest and recover enough to repeat the effort the following day. Gareth and Jo
have been training for this incredible feat of human endurance for the last 18 months. Jo has been implementing a training schedule which has gradually increased the distances they are running together with some cross training, hill walking and a lot of core stability work. “Despite careful planning, we have both had to deal with the odd injury along the way but we’re now itching to get out there and get started,” Jo adds. They have tried to make the impact of their arduous training as small as possible on family life and their children have been hugely supportive. Both Gareth and Jo are looking forward to a summer of doing very little although there is bound to be another crazy idea in the pipeline.

They have been spurred on by the experiences of some close friends and took the decision to use this unique event to raise money for charity. Gareth’s training partner, who had previously competed with him in Iron man competitions, was suffering with Multiple Sclerosis and undergoing treatment. In addition to that close family friends are dealing with the impact of the hereditary condition Myotonic dystrophy, a disease which can be very painful and is characterised by progressive muscle wasting and weakness. Gareth and Jo have all ready raised nearly £7,000 for Myotonic Dystrophy Research and the MS Society and are delighted to be able to contribute to these extremely worthy causes by experiencing one of the hardest challenges in the world. Should you wish to support their cause please go to: www. uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JohannaSutton1 or www.justgiving.com/Gareth-Sutton2
