FoRMeR HockeY STaR JaileD A FORMER ice hockey star has been jailed for over five years after pleading guilty to four counts of inciting sexual activity with a child and one count of sexual activity with a child.
understand that this investigation may cause some concern among the local sporting community, as well as families who may have interacted with Squires in the past.
Thomas Squires, who lived in Chapeltown was sentenced following a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday March 24.
“If you do have any concerns, please get in touch with police. You can also call or text the national helpline Say Something on 116 000 if you want any advice or support.
The 26-year-old played for Sheffield Steelers and Sheffield Steeldogs but now faces five years and four months in prison, with an additional three years on license. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register and handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). The charges relate to five victims, girls who were under the age of 16 at the time of the offences, who cannot be named for legal reasons. The court heard how Squires approached his victims via social media and requested sexual images from them. The abuse of his victims spanned a five-year period between 2010 and 2015. Detective Sergeant Aneela Khalil-Khan, the investigating officer, said: “Squires was relatively well-known locally as an ice hockey player, as well as coaching the sport. He took advantage of this position of power to groom and sexually exploit his victims. “He used his position as ice hockey coach to approach young girls, some of whom recognised him as a local hockey ‘star’, and began the grooming process. “His victims have been remarkably brave coming forward to report their abuse and I am pleased that Squires pleaded guilty to multiple offences meaning they did not have to go through a trial process. “He has now received a custodial sentence, which should prevent him from causing further harm. I
“Excellent
Ice hockey administrators insist that their sport remains a safe environment for children and young people, after former player Tom Squires was jailed. Charles Dacres, English Ice Hockey director responsible for child protection and a director with Ice Hockey UK, said: “Squires used his position as a sportsman and supposed role model to commit these offences against young girls. “Ice hockey, like most sports these days, has robust safeguarding procedures in place to protect the young and vulnerable from people like Squires. “Individuals who have contact with children and vulnerable adults do go through DBS checking, there is safeguarding education as part of coaching and management qualifications. All clubs have nominated safeguarding officers and the association has its own CPO with established procedures for reporting concerns or incidents. “Tom Squires is a rogue individual as far as ice hockey is concerned, these crimes go back over five years and I would say that the situation would be detected by the systems in use now in clubs. Children and young adults can and should feel safe as part of this sport. Ice hockey has a dedicated safeguarding helpline which is 07546983700 or concerns can be emailed to safeguarding@EIHA.co.uk

High Green 3G football pitches get further council funding SHEFFIELD City Council have agreed this month to provide additional funding to the on-going development of the 3G pitches and football hub at St George’s Park Thorncliffe, in High Green. The new football hub complex was officially opened in December and the centre includes two full-size floodlit artificial grass pitches, two natural grass pitches, changing rooms, a café and a coach education room. Sheffield Council teamed up with The FA in 2015 to invest in new football hubs in a bid to get more young people playing football on top-class facilities, and Thorncliffe Recreation Ground is one of the sites around the city which has seen major development as part of the so-called “Parklife” project. In total the project will see more than £6.8 million invested in football in Sheffield.

In order to make sure the football hub in Thorncliffe is developed to the best possible standard additional funding of £69,000 has been made by Sheffield Council. This will provide CCTV for the site, increased security, repairs to Mortomley close, tarmac in the front of the pavilion and additional fencing to the pitches. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for sport, said: “This is a very exciting time for football in Sheffield and we are proud to be leading the way on this national scheme with the FA. Together with our partners we are investing in sports right across the city. “In Thorncliffe the new hub will make a real difference to the community, and Sheffield’s Labour councillors will continue with the same commitment to investing in grassroots sport”.

BROTHER and sister duo Paul and Georgia Kirk have been selected to represent their countries in April. Both are products of the Deepcar Brass Band training programme and started learning an instrument at six years of age. Georgia, 16 and a pupil at Stocksbridge High School, has been selected for The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain on Tenor Horn. The band will be performing various concerts in early April including concerts in the Midlands, Cambridge and one at the prestigious Barbican Theatre in London.
Brother Paul is 21 and a former Stocksbridge High School pupil. He also plays Tenor Horn player. He is currently a final year music student at Huddersfield University and has been selected to represent his country for the European Youth Brass Band in Belgium in late April. Only three players from England have been selected for this music ensemble. The band are playing various concerts around Belgium including an appearance at the Menin Gate and the opening and closing ceremonies at the European Brass Band Championships in Ostend.
School pupils help design wood information board
BURNCROSS Community Action Group has been involved with a project relating to Foxfield Spring wood in Chapeltown. They have had involvement with creating an information board which lets the community know about the wildlife within the woods. Pupils in Year Two at Windmill Hill Primary School were asked to be a part of this project by drawing animals that might be seen in this area, to go onto the information board.
Sue Green of Burncross Action Group with the winning designers
Three of the children’s designs were chosen by the group. Sue Green came in to present the winners with a book, as well as a gift of £100 for the year group to spend on an educational resource to use within the woods. The information board should be completed by the end of this month.

Award-winning family firm opens new Fox Valley store THE award winning family butchers John Crawshaws has opened a brand new store at north Sheffield’s Fox Valley development. The Crawshaw name has been a mainstay of the retail line up in Stocksbridge for more than 60 years and is synonymous with high quality local meat as well as delicious homemade pies and cooked meats. The company already has four shops in north Sheffield including other stores in Stocksbridge, Chapeltown and Hillsborough – the mayor of Stocksbridge Cllr Alan Laws cut the ribbon at the new Fox Valley store to mark the launch of the company’s latest venture. The company’s fifth butchers shop is in a new 1,000 sq. ft. unit at the new retail destination which opened in June last year – it can be found next door to Greggs and Timpsons overlooking the piazza area at Fox Valley. The company employs around 70 people and prides itself on the length of service of its staff, the team has expanded with new members of staff joining the team. Over the last 60 years the Crawshaw family has built up a wealth of experience in butchery and only sells selected beef, pork and lamb from farms within a 30 mile radius under the local Seven Hills brand.
The Fox Valley store has a full butchery and cold meat range with its popular weekly promotions – the company will keep its manufacturing and butchery production area alongside the butchers on Manchester Road shop in Stocksbridge. The sandwich and deli business will continue to operate from Manchester Road. John said: “We are really pleased to be expanding and opening a new store here at Fox Valley alongside our existing businesses. We hope our customers will be impressed with the look of the new store. “Fox Valley is bringing more visitors to Stocksbridge which really is great to see and we are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new to the shop.”
Joseph Shaw is a musician and composer and as part of my studies at the Royal Northern College of Music is organising a concert on April 8 which will the feature the music of his relative. The concert will be at Christ Church in Stocksbridge and all proceeds will go to Cancer Research and the Stroke Association. Joseph said: “The programme of the evening will focus mainly on John Hirst’s original compositions, interspersed with other items from a variety of performers and genres. “I’m very lucky to have the help of friends and family in putting this together, which so far is going very smoothly. This concert, which I hope will be the first in a series, will be an ideal opportunity for his work to be performed and recorded in the local area. “I feel a special connection with his music because he was the only other person in our family

“Although our approaches are very different, I can’t help but feel part of a lineage somehow and being influenced by the sounds he created which is really inspiring. I’ll be writing more information on the background to his life and music very soon. “So far I’ve catalogued 30 of his works for mainly chamber ensembles with a few larger scale works too. “Music for solo piano, violin duet, string quartet, piano quartet, chorus and orchestra is all there waiting to be heard. I would describe his music as romantic in style with hints of more modern ideas as well. His level of craft as a composer has produced pieces with a wonderful sense of melody, harmony and structure that are a joy to listen to. The spring concert takes place on Saturday April 8 and features the musical works of John David Hirst performed by local soloists and ensembles. It will take place at Christ Church Hall, Stocksbridge, at 7.30pm.

Bosses at the centre were made aware of the breakin at around 3am on Tuesday March 28. The criminals only managed to get a few pounds of tea money as that is all that was left on the premises
but the damage was done as they gained entry with doors and windows being broken. The evening before, Steel Evolution Martial Arts gym on Manchester Road was also broken into. Anyone who has any information should contact the police.

Serving the local community since 2002
The Government has recently consulted on a new National Funding Formula for Schools, which would in theory remove the disparity in the funding which different schools receive. Concerns have been expressed by many local people that this could mean budget cuts at some local schools. Commenting, Angela said: “In principle, it makes perfect sense to standardize the basic funding each school receives per pupil and end the so-called ‘postcode lottery’ of school budgets. “Penistone Grammar School gets a particularly poor deal under the current arrangements, and currently receives one of the lowest basic rates of funding amongst secondary schools in the UK.”
The proposed funding formula would provide an increase to the Penistone Grammar School budget over a number of years. However, Government plans only allow for very modest increases in the first two years with no guarantee that they would receive the remainder of the funding. In addition, a number of local schools, some of which are small and already run on tight budgets, are set to lose funding under the new arrangements. Angela continues: “Ultimately, whilst it is important that funding apportioned to schools is distributed in a more uniform way, school funding will only be truly fair when they are provided with enough money to properly fund the incredibly important role they undertake. That is why I am calling for increased investment in education for the benefit of all our futures.”

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Our Loving Mum
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing.
Joe’s family would like to thank all relatives, friends and neighbours for their kind expressions of sympathy. Special thanks to everyone at Wood Hill Grange Care Home for their excellent care. Thank you to Robin Lockwood for his uplifting service.

Chapeltown Baths
Birthdays
I am writing regarding the appalling state of the now closed and semi-derelict Chapeltown Baths on Burncross Road, Chapeltown. The building is large in size and now an absolute eyesore and an embarrassment to the area. The building and immediate area is a haven for youths to congregate and is littered with rubbish bags including clothing and general litter.
PEGGY EASTLAND will be celebrating her 100th Birthday on Friday 31st March 2017. Peggy has been a resident at Belmont House Care Home, Stocksbridge, for the last 13 years. She was obliged to close her curtains and later contacted the police although no officers were seen to attend. One does not like to think what had happened had her husband or indeed myself been at home and confronted the youths. I later recovered a crowbar from in front of the houses which had apparently been left by the youths. This item was possibly used to cause damage to the wall and could be classed as an offensive weapon or item used in the commission of crime.

All you need to be on your way together is a valid DEFRA certificate - also known as a PET passport - which can be obtained from any registered vet. A PET passport or third country certificate shows that the pet has been micro-chipped and vaccinated against rabies. You need to ensure you plan ahead, as your pet may not leave or re-enter the UK until 21 calendar days have elapsed from the date of the rabies vaccination. Rabies boosters must be kept up to date. Your pet must be inspected by vets, both in the UK before departure and abroad before your return (most vets in France are not open on Sundays and Mondays). Ensure that you are fully aware of the regulations before planning your journey. It is also worth asking your vet about heartworm, which may be more prevalent among dogs on the continent than those in the UK, and also asking about treatment against ticks. Once you have decided you are going to take your pet on holiday, you will need to book in advance otherwise they won’t be able to travel. Then when you are on board, these tips can help make your pet’s journey as comfortable as possible: Make sure your pet is as fit and healthy as possible to withstand the journey. Give them a light meal about two hours before they travel. Give your pet the opportunity to go to the toilet before it is put in its carrying container. Let your pet try out the carrying container before the trip. The carrying container should be wellventilated, safe, roomy enough for the animal to move around, and have adequate food and water for the trip, with easily-refillable containers for a long journey. Put a familiar-smelling cushion or rug in the container to help your pet settle.

Easter fun at Old Moor
Also, the national Transpennine Trail (TPT) cycle route runs right past the entrance to RSPB Old Moor. In summer the grasslands are ablaze with butterflies and orchids, and you’ll be able to see newly-hatched ducklings. Around 8% of our visitors travel to the reserve along the TPT. Unfortunately we don’t allow cycling or dog walking on Old Moor itself. But the reserve is a great opportunity to stop off and refresh yourself with tea and a bacon butty. Alternatively you can park up at one of our bike racks and head off on to the reserve for a spot of nature. The visitor centre and café are open daily, except Christmas Day and Boxing day, 9.30am to 5pm. Plus, with children’s entrance fees at just £2.50, adults at just £5 and a family ticket for £11 there really isn’t a reason not to visit. Or why not become a member and help give nature a home? Individual adult membership starts at just £4 a month; family membership for 1-2 adults and up to 5 children from only £5 a month, and youth membership for up to 5 children is just £22 a year for one child or £33 a year for 2-5 children. We also have lots of events coming up throughout the year, just check our listings at www.rspb.org.uk and search for ‘Dearne Valley’ or check out our Facebook page: RSPB South Yorks.

Choir chairman Mick Siddall said: “We are expecting thousands of people in the area for the Tour de Yorkshire event. “We are looking forward to a great concert and the next day will greet the crowds and riders to Bolsterstone in the way we know best - by singing.” Tickets for the concert from Stocksbridge Keys, 524 Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, or see www.bolsterstonemvc.co.uk or deepcarbrassband.org.uk

Losing start for Tigers SHEFFIELD lost their opening SGB Championship fixture of the season as they went down 52-41 at Ipswich. The Window Centre Tigers were restricted to just four race winners at Foxhall as a powerful Witches side proved to be too strong on opening night. With eight heats gone, the Tigers trailed by 12points, but an 8-1 from captain Kyle Howarth and Robert Branford reduced the gap to five. However, the Witches responded instantly with a maximum heat advantage of their own to put them 36-27 up on the night, before finishing strongly to send Sheffield home empty handed.
“Kyle (Howarth) and Lasse (Bjerre) did well and myself personally, I wasn’t shocked to see how well Robert (Branford) did at reserve because that’s what he’s capable of. “As for the rest of the boys, they’ll be glad to have a team meeting under their belts and I know they’ll pick themselves up pretty quickly. “This is obviously very early doors and while the result wasn’t what we wanted, the boys shouldn’t let their heads drop too much after tonight.” Skipper Kyle Howarth top scored for the Tigers while Danish star Lasse Bjerre recovered well from an exclusion in his first race in Sheffield colours.
Tigers boss Simon Stead admitted the better side won on the night, but says there are plenty of positives to take out of the first meeting of the season.
Rob Branford put in an impressive, encouraging display at reserve while the rest of the Owlerton outfit will be looking to bag more points when they host Somerset in Yorkshire on Thursday.
“Obviously I’m disappointed not to be leaving with any league points but Ipswich deserved their win and we can’t have too many complaints,” Stead said.
IPSWICH 52: Danny King 15 (maximum), Rory Schlein 13+1, Cameron Heeps 8+2, Danyon Hume 8+1, Nico Covatti 7+1, Connor Mountain 1, Kyle Newman R/R.
“As I said earlier in the week, Ipswich are a really strong side and I can’t see many teams taking points off them at their place this year.
SHEFFIELD 41: Kyle Howarth 12, Rob Branford 8+2, Lasse Bjerre 8+1, Josh Grajczonek 6+1, Josh Bates 4+1, Todd Kurtz 3, Jack ParkinsonBlackburn 0.
“For me though there was enough there in our performance which we can take into the rest of the season and build on.
Road Relays for Footpath Runners ANOTHER busy weekend for the Penistone Footpath Runners saw teams and individuals competing at regional and national championship events. Eighteen athletes made the journey across the Pennines to take part in the Northern 12 and six Stage Road Relays. The event draws the best club runners from across the north of England, and for many members it was their first taste of running at this level of competition. Each runner ran either a 3.2 or 5.9 mile loop around the picturesque Stanley Park, Blackpool before handing on to their team mate. Both the men’s and women’s teams showed superb consistency to finish in 29th and 32nd place respectively. This meant they placed 3rd South Yorkshire Club, behind Rotherham Harriers and Sheffield Running Club, and just ahead of local rivals Barnsley AC. Team spirit was superb, with all runners supporting each other and made for a worthwhile and rewarding day out. Edale Skyline Fell Race, a category A long fell race was held on an unmarked course covering high and exposed fell terrain, With over 21 miles and 4,505ft of climbing this wasn’t one for the faint hearted. Despite competing in the Northern Road Relays the day before, Tom Randall and Robin Clough finished 78th and 111th respectively, with Jim Bell completing the course in 202nd place. The first counter in FRA English Championship Jude Matthews in action at took place at Long Mynd Valley race. The race was the Northern Road Relays approx 11.5 miles with 4,501ft of climbing. Five club members ran against some of the best fell runners in the country, giving a good account of themselves, with Richard Mackie being first back for the fell course lit up by beacons. Waller shone for the club in 165th place, and Steve What a Guy Storey club, finishing an excellent third place over the 5.7 finishing seventh V50 in 215th place overall. mile course Dave Needham made the journey up to the Lake District to race in the Coniston 14, adding another V70 club record to his ever-growing list with 2:02.28.
The Darlington South Park 20 was an interesting race run on 20 time one mile loops of the northeastern park. Dawn Broom finished 5th female and first vet overall in a time of 2:43.50.
Jon Waller travelled over to Lancashire to take part Keith Gordon finished V65 at the Monsal Trail half in the Pendle Hill Dark Dash Night Fell Race on a marathon in a time of 1:45.47.

STEELS BACK TO WINNING WAYS Loughborough Dynamo 2–3 Stocksbridge PS
STEELS got back to winning ways with an impressive 3-2 win away at relegation threatened Loughborough Dynamo. On seven minutes Steels striker Joe Lumsden forced Jack Tolley in the Loughborough goal to make a save with a volley from just from just outside the area David Reay had to be alert after Steels gave away a freekick just outside the penalty area and Lavell White’s shot was on target. But it was Stocksbridge that took an early lead on 17 minutes when George Grayson turned home a Nat Crofts cross from the right to give the keeper no chance. Lavell White looked the most threatening for the home side
and on the 20th minute he saw his powerful left foot shot go narrowly wide. From the resulting goal kick Steels went straight down the other end of the pitch, but a last ditch tackle by Louis Keenan prevented Steels Nathaniel Crofts going clear. Just before half-time the action intensified and Crofts had a good chance which flew over the bar and Dynamo forward Karl Demidh was sent off for a second yellow card. Just when it looked as if the home team could reach half time with just the one goal deficit, Steels doubled their lead. In the first minute of added time Lumsden broke clear and side-footed past Tolley to give Stocksbridge a 2-0 lead.
Straight after the break the home side reduced the deficit, good work from Durkin down the Loughborough left saw him reach the byline and pull back a cross for Keenan to score from close range. Steels had a good chance minutes later when striker Scott Ruthven was on the end of a cross but headed over the Dynamo bar. In the 64th minute Ruthven drew a fine save from Tolley, who turned his powerful shot onto the bar, the ball bouncing away to safety. In the 73rd minute Steels extended their lead when Brodie Lichfield picked up a loose ball and curled it home from distance.
Church draw with Knaresborough PENISTONE Church drew 1-1 Knaresborough Town away to Knaresborough on Saturday. Danny Barlow opened the scoring for Church on 20 minutes but Colin Heath equalised just three minutes later. After the game Church manager Ian Richards said: “Today was set for a game, when you see the surface, it’s going to take a bit of magic, which we had with Danny Barlow’s free kick or a mistake which unfortunately they had with Church goalie Adam Rhodes coming out and mistiming his punch for their free kick and that’s how it ended. “It was very difficult to play football on an extremely bobbly dry lively pitch and it’s two teams who do like to play football so it made it difficult. I’m really pleased with how the boys have played today.”
Brodie Lichfield curled in a late third goal to seal the win. Photo by Ian Revitt.

Pigs rally to take maximum Points
Stocksbridge RUFC 31 – 10 Northallerton RUFC STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC kept their Division Three survival hopes alive on Saturday, beating fourth-placed Northallerton RUFC 31-10 at Coal Pit Lane.
The try was once again converted to give a score of 19-10 and it wasn’t long before the Pigs were on the rampage again, but this time it was the turn of the backs to get in on the act.
The Pigs started the game sluggishly and were punished when the Northallerton right winger evaded three defenders to score in the corner.
Returning centre Liam O’Leary showed great strength to rip the ball from his opposite number and set Ben Westby off on a mazy run and then linked up with the ever-alert Adam Frith, who in turn fed Paul Kelly to score in the corner and seal a vital bonus point for the Pigs.
The conversion was missed but Stocksbridge continued to turn over possession needlessly and spent most of the opening 20 minutes defending inside their own third. However, the score remained 5-0 to the visitors thanks to some solid defence, led by skipper Pete Newton and rookie forward Gary Woodcock. It took some direct and devastating centre play from giant Dave Brown to get the Pigs back on the front foot and on the 20 minute mark, one of these breaks was capitalised upon when Ben Brown finished off a sustained attack by the Stocksbridge pack to go over from short range. The conversion was missed, but the Pigs were starting to dominate possession and they were rewarded on 30 minutes, when they turned down a chance to go for goal and instead opted for a line-out. The subsequent passage of play led to scrum half Adam Frith feeding beefy Joe Smith who made light work of beating the much smaller Northallerton right winger to score in the corner. The try was converted to give a score of 12-5 at half time. The second half saw Stocksbridge really focus on ball retention and after several strong drives from Ricky Rowett, Pete Newton and Andy Beale, Dave Brown got his reward as he bulldozed his way over.
The conversion was missed to take the score to 24-5 in favour of the home team, but a Ben Brown sin-binning gave Northallerton an opportunity to strike and they duly did, as their pack drove the Pigs back over their line to record their second try. The conversion was missed to put the visitors 14 points behind, but nerves were soon eased with 10 minutes to go, as Joe Smith broke free from half way and continued to mow down defenders in his path to the try line. This final try was again converted to give a result of Stocksbridge 31 Northallerton 10. This win puts Stocksbridge just five points behind Harrogate, who have a tough run in that includes a trip to Coal Pit Lane in a fortnight’s time. The Pigs will be concentrating on picking up their first away win of the season, as they visit bottom-placed Halifax this Saturday. Club Captain Pete Newton was quick to reiterate the need for focus saying, “We played really well this week, but it will count for nothing if we don’t get a result at Halifax. The focus for the team this week will be about making sure we capitalise on our strong defence and make sure we grind the opposition down.”
