WARNING TO CAT OWNERS AFTER CRUEL SHOOTING A CAT-OWNER is Stocksbridge has warned other cat owners to be vigilant after she found out that her cat had been shot five times.

“We need to catch them before it’s too late. If you know anybody who is doing this please report them to police and RSPCA.”

Karen Frudd, who lives in the Garden Village area, says that her 17-moth-old cat Clyde was found to have five pellets in his body when she took it to the vet.

Cats Protection’s online have started a petition and are seeking cat owners to back the campaign, and put pressure on the government to update the law on air guns.

She told Look Local: “Clyde had been missing for 20 days and then he came home late on Saturday night unable to walk on his back leg. It was just hanging there and we knew straight away he was very ill and that his life was hanging in the balance.

Both Northern Ireland and Scotland already have air gun licencing laws in place, and with a lack of UKwide regulation, it has been reported that 90% of air gun attacks on cats happen in England and Wales.

“We rushed him to the nearest emergency vets. We found out he had a temperature of 103, his breathing was rapid and then they X-rayed him and found his gut wasn’t working properly. “On further X-rays they found out that some horrible person had shot Clyde five times and all the pellets had lodged in his spine, causing damage to his back leg.

Cats Protection’s Advocacy Manager Jacqui Cuff says: “The reality of an air gun attack on a cat is horrific, and around half die as a result of their injuries. Those that survive will endure considerable suffering and may be left with life-long disabilities. Owners can face a great deal of upset and huge vet bills and whole communities can be left deeply worried about attacks of this kind in their neighbourhood.”

“Clyde was in intensive care at the vets and after two days he was allowed home. He will never be able to enjoy the outside world anymore because one of the bullets damaged his leg.

Northern Ireland led the way in restricting gun ownership and since 2004, anyone who buys, owns or uses an air weapon in Northern Ireland is now required to have a licence. Scotland adopted similar legislation earlier in 2017.

“I just want to warn cat owners to try and keep their cats in safe because there is a person or persons maiming our poor defenceless cats.

To watch Cats Protection’s campaign video and sign the petition, or find out more about the campaign, please visit cats.e-activist.com/page/7153/petition/1 RECOVERING Clyde is recovering but won’t be allowed to enjoy outdoor life again.

ON Wednesday March 22, Stocksbridge High School took 14 inspirational students to the SSE Arena in London to celebrate their successes in fundraising for charities and making a difference in their local and wider community. This event brought together world-renowned speakers, A-List performers and tens of thousands of young people to celebrate a year of action that has transformed communities and changed lives. On the day students were greeted by some excellent inspirational speakers such as the likes of Kate Winslet who spoke about the importance of confidence and body image and Spencer West, an inspiration man who lost both of his legs from the pelvis down at the age of five. He later went on to climb Mount Kilimanjaro using his hands and wheelchair. The students

also enjoyed performances from Jessie J, Conor Maynard and The Vamps. Stocksbridge High School is committed to the ‘We Movement’ and has joined hundreds of schools across the UK to support the ‘We Schools’ programme for a second year. Every day students are stepping up and making a difference in their local community and world at large. To live ‘We’ at school is to recognise that no matter your age or where you love, we can all make a positive impact – whether that’s volunteering, fundraising or raising awareness for causes that matter. The students who attended got a lot out of the day, coming away feeling a new sense of exhilaration and drive to continue the work they have been doing in school and actually experienced what some of that work can achieve in the real world.

CHALLENGE: Fundraiser Adam Leathwood and one of the dogs he walked. A HILLSBOROUGH man who belongs to a charitable organisation set up through a common love of Star Wars is walking 30 different dogs in April to raise the profile of animals needing adoption. Adam Leathwood is part of ‘The Black Death Crew’ which was founded in 2012 at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Their goal is to encourage a spirit of youth in everyone through their love for Star Wars. There are six chapters, mostly in America, and Adam belongs to ‘Sentinel Squadron’, this is the ‘rest of the world chapter’ made up of mainly U.K. people with a few Europeans and two Australians. Each chapter chooses a month a year and a small charity to support. Then the chapters come up

with ways to support these charities throughout the month. In the past they have supported a children’s leukaemia and cancer charity and raised money for communication equipment for a specialist school.

“I will be walking 30 different rescue dogs during April. I can’t do one a day due to work hours and opening hours of rescue centres clashing. So this weekend I walked three, next weekend I’ll walk loads more and so on until I’ve done 30.

A veteran charity and mental health charities have also benefitted. They raise awareness through Instagram by posting what the chosen charity is and what they’re doing to raise funds.

“I’ll be posting each ones profile on Facebook and Instagram to raise their profile for adoption. I’m asking for donations for a separate charity ‘Pets as Therapy UK’ as part of my social charity groups charity month.

All members of the group are expected as a minimum to share five charity posts a year but members do a lot more and are very active in their fund raising. Adam told Look Local about his challenge. He said: “My month of dog walking is well under way.

“They’re a small charity who provide therapy pets to care homes, schools and hospitals. Doing the walking is my challenge for the month.” Adam is aiming to raise £250 for the charity and is well on his way to his target. To donate, go to his page at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Stanley-Ironhead

Walkers are Welcome receive high praise STOCKSBRIDGE Walkers are Welcome recently received feedback from the National organisation on their work during 2016. They were very pleased to be told that their ‘exemplary Annual Report’ highlighted a ‘wide range of marketing ideas’ and that their ‘variety of walks and the instructions is very innovative.’

This is backed up by comments received about the downloadable walk instructions which are available on their website. A recent happy walker commented: “We’ve just done the Wortley-Green Moor walk which was wonderful and the instructions were really clear. Probably the best we’ve ever followed.”

The group produced a new flyer before Christmas, and due, to demand, are currently reprinting. Copies will be available from mid-April ready for the finish of the Tour de Yorkshire in Stocksbridge. Walk instructions are available at: www.stocksbridge-walkers.org. uk/walks_around_Stocksbridge. html

PEGGY JOINS 100 CLUB

A RESIDENT of Belmont House nursing home reached their 100th birthday last week and she was surrounded by staff, friends and family for the celebration.

A keen gardener, Peggy was originally from Worksop but moved to Belmont House to be nearer her family who reside in Wortley.

Peggy Eastland, who was born on Friday March 31 1917, has been at Belmont House, which she describes as “like a second home for 13 years now.

In her younger days, she transformed a five acre patch of land into beautiful gardens singlehandedly and was a keen athlete.

She received a telegram from the Queen and was inundated with gifts, cards, balloons and flowers.

She was married to husband Alwyn and up to a year ago was still performing high kicks as part of her dancing.

PENISTONE Road traffic slowed down to a sluggish pace as fire crews were called to a furnace fire in a commercial building on Beulah Road in Sheffield at 4:10pm on Tuesday. At the height of the fire eight fire engines from Rivelin, Central, Elm Lane, Parkway, Rotherham and Lowedges were at the scene. Everyone in the building and surrounding area were evacuated until the fire was extinguished. The fire was contained to the furnace area. Five fire crews remain at the scene until 6.30pm damping down and ventilating the premise.

DAY OF SCHOOL FUN FOR COMIC RELIEF

THE Student Council of Stocksbridge Junior School has worked extremely hard to raise money for a fantastic cause.

On Friday March 24, they prepared and organised a day of fun and laughter in aid of Comic Relief. Between selling Red Noses at break-times and sending letters home to parents to give them information about the day, they made posters and created games to play.

Children filled the school with a ‘splash’ of red, and parents and the local community kindly donated a variety of buns and biscuits to sell.

The successful bake sale had many helping hands from the school’s PTA, ‘The Friends of SJS’, and the cakes became a sellout! Guess the name of the teddy and guess how many sweets are in the jar were extremely popular and the school even had a

small second-hand book sale. After sharing jokes and stories in classes and filling giant red noses with copper coins, the Student Council and Stocksbridge Junior School were very proud to announce that they had raised £801.48 for Comic Relief! Thank you to everyone who donated cakes, gave their time to help and to our children and parents, who, without your support, this day would never have been such a success.

Grenoside incident I’m writing in because I’m shocked by the events I saw in Grenoside at around 7pm on March 28 while walking home with my dog. Grenoside prides itself as a thriving community where everyone is friendly and you know your neighbours. However, today I witnessed an act of behaviour which made me shake my head in anger. On my way home I saw a car pulled up outside a house come to collect a large garden mower. As the residents were helping load the large machinery into the back of the car a large man driving a grey Range Rover sped past me along the road and proceeded to beep his horn and shout rudely at the people loading the mower. His wife proceeded to join in shouting and gesturing. The people on the street gestured for him to move back and wait till they were finished but he drove his large car closer and closer to them until he was almost touching the bumper of the car in front. They approached the driver to ask why he was so impatient and so on and the driver proceeded to yell and scream that he was filming them and would phone the police. He was shouting so loudly that I could hear him from 50 or so metres away. He then proceeded to reach out the driver’s side window to try and hit a young girl who had been helping load the machine into the visiting car. After he had screamed at this young woman he tried to reverse his large car into them as they were

Middle order man Todd Kurtz and reserve Robert Branford also played vital roles and combined for what proved to be the decisive 5-1 in the penultimate race. With local lad Josh Bates notching two race wins, plus Lasse Bjerre and Jack Parkinson-Blackburn adding important points, the Tigers came out on top in a tight meeting. They will now prepare to welcome Berwick to Owlerton for their first home fixture in the SGB Championship next Thursday at 7.30pm.

Eleven Hawks fly to a miraculous victory Sheffield Hawks 24 – 13 Bentley ARLFC THE Hawks delivered on their promise and potential with a thrilling victory against a full strength team. 11 players took on 15 and the result was never in doubt, Hawks outscoring their opponents in both halves with clinical finishing and intelligent marshalling of their resources. Bailey Thompson scored two quick tries in the first half to stun the visitors into mistake after mistake. Hawks played efficiently, shared the workload and

hit their tackles hard. Reuben Kateregga stepped up to the captaincy with strength and determination and lead from the front offensively and defensively. Jack Ryan helped blunt any threat in the forwards with strong running and ferocious defence. Hawks negated the numerical advantage of the opposition, sliding defensively with skill and constant support for each other. The attritional nature of their tackling took out most of the Bent-

ley second row and set after set was completed defensively and offensively. The second half saw even greater effort and success. Harry Edgar stepped his way to another try to follow up excellent organisational work. Harry Scott was aggressive and destroyed Bentley’s concentration throughout the game, often hitting hard enough to cause turnovers and mistakes. From such an outstanding effort the ball was quickly

shifted from one side of the pitch to another to allow Kateregga to run on to a perfectly timed pass finish a team move from end to end to score the try of the match. Excellent defensive work continued and Bentley were frustrated and wound up to such an extent that they lost a player to the sin-bin. Harry Scott earned a thoroughly well deserved try after picking up a difficult bouncing ball and running in from 60 metres out. The team deserves every congratulation for a really special victory.

Bridge edge within a point of safety Halifax 11 – 17 Stocksbridge RUFC STOCKSBRIDGE have clawed back a 20-point deficit from the main pack, winning four out of the last five games to move within a point of Harrogate with their first away win of the season over Halifax.

It was at this point Bridge began to match Halifax’s intensity, and they would score two tries before half time. The first coming from a trademark Stocksbridge line out drive, and as the forwards splintered off to attack the defence Paul Kelly put Sam Whitaker (sponsored by The Business Hair Salon) through a hole to score from five metres.

Stocksbridge started sluggishly, allowing Halifax to dominate the first 20 minutes. Some early discipline issues gave Halifax good territory, and as they broke the defensive line the cover defence was unable to prevent a try in the corner. They missed the conversion to take a five-point lead.

Stocksbridge piled on the pressure and forced a knock on as Halifax attempted to exit from their line. A lovely 8-9 move from the resulting scrum saw Stefan Kazmierski (sponsored by Brian Mills Decorating Services) run in unopposed in the corner to make the scores 11-10 in Halifax’s favour at the break.

Halifax added two penalties before Stocksbridge could reply, one coming after a superb run from the Halifax winger, from his inside his own half, who almost ran in for the try himself.

Bridge came out of the blocks firing in the second half, quickly adding a third try. After another 8-9 move in the midfield Frith chipped the ball ahead into the 22, dribbling out for a defensive line out

on the five-metre line for Halifax. Halifax were unable to clear any real distance, and Stocksbridge brought the ball down from their line out and soon found a way over the line with Liam Roebuck (sponsored by S&S Goodly Agricultural Services). The conversion was made from out wide by Bowskill to give them a 17-11 lead. Stocksbridge went in search of the bonus point try, yet after several set piece opportunities in the Halifax 22 they lacked the final piece of precision needed to seal the full five-point win on the day. Stocksbridge have an opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone this weekend as they host Harrogate, who are only one point above them in the league. Head Coach Gam added; “we’ve exceeded expectations so far, we’ve worked extremely hard and now our destiny is in our own

Good week for Footpath Runners ANOTHER busy weekend saw club members competing all over the North of England and as far away as Prague.

the V65 club record in 1:39.42 in hot conditions. John Howsham was first man back for the club, with Jacqueline Armitage being first woman back.

Pride of place went to new member Gareth Cooke who beat a long-standing senior male club record at the Manchester Marathon with a time of 2:41.05.

John and Dawn Broom made the trip across the Pennines to run the Garstang Gallop seven mile road race, both setting new club records for the distance with 43:54 and 51:47 respectively.

Jude Matthews ran a personal best of 3:56.46 whilst Dave Needham set yet another V70 club record with 4:04.46. Jane Partridge and Karen Schofield both ran 4:59.26 whilst Geoff Dimelow ran 5:02.28. The first of the South Yorkshire Road League Series took place at Lodge Moor last week, with Scott Hinchcliiffe beating a good quality field to finish first overall in 28.20 on the testing course. Shaun Dimelow was first V45, with Ray Brown (V75) and Sue Higham (F65) also finishing first in their categories. Andrea Henson was second F45. Sue Beevers, Lesley Latchem and Bill Phillips were all third in their respective categories. An octet of runners made a weekend visit to the Czech Republic to compete in the Prague Half Marathon, with Bill Phillips shaving 16 seconds off

Also making a Lancashire visit was V60 Steve Storey who finished second V60 in the Pendle fell race, over 4.5 miles and 1499 feet of climbing. Jon Waller finished seventh in the Pete Hartley Memorial Liver Hill fell race hosted by Rossendale Harriers. Ian Charlesworth finished 3rd V50 at the Chicken Run Fell Race. Sarah Walch and Jill Carlron completed the first of the Dales Trail series by racing 20k starting from the Swaledale town of Reeth in 2:15.50 and 2:42.37 respectively. Seuranie Johnstone completed the Overgate 10k in Halifax whilst club members also competed at the Lads Leap fell race.

hands. We need everybody behind us going into these final two matches.” Try scorer Stefan left with the Man of the Match award, looking dangerous with ball in hand throughout and displaying his solid defence when Halifax attacked his wing. For the last home game of the season, this Saturday against Harrogate Pythons, Stocksbridge want a bumper crowd. They also want to make it a bit of fun so they’re asking fans to dress up as pigs. Best adult male pig will receive £25, best adult woman pig will receive £25 and best piglet will receive £10. This will be judged after match which starts at 4.30pm. The game is a must-win one so come and get behind the team. The competition is sponsored by head coach Mick Shouler.

Football round-up ON Saturday, Penistone Church took a narrow 1-0 win against Worsborough Bridge Athletic with Jimmy Stafford scoring the only goal in the 19th minute. Stocksbridge Park Steels under 13 team were in action in Division B, beating Wisewood 7-4 with hat-tricks from Bartle and Jenkins. Crossland added the seventh. In Division D, Stocksbridge beat Pogmoor 3-2 with a double from Lowe and a goal from Hayes. The under 15 side lost 6-2 to AFC Dronfield in Division B.

Stocksbridge PS 2 – 0 Spalding United

176 MAIN STREET, GRENOSIDE S35 8PR

Headers from Matt Reay and Brodie Litchfield, with a penalty save from heroic goalkeeper David Reay sandwiched in-between, earned Steels three more valuable points.

All our meals must be tried!

Stocksbridge’s lead was made safer when Spalding’s Kern Miller was sent off for violent conduct. Miller could face an extra ban on top of the automatic three match suspension as he swore loudly at spectators as he left the field before angrily confronting referee Martin Ashworth outside the bar after the game.

CAFE OPEN: 8AM - 4PM SUNDAY 9AM - 4PM

All the Stocksbridge players played their part in an organised and disciplined display which earned them their third consecutive victory.

The Steels had to weather an early Spalding storm, but for most of the match Chris Hilton’s men were on top. Defender Reay set them on their way with a powering close range header from Joe Lumsden’s superb knock back. The hairy moment for the Steels was ten minutes into the second half. A handball from Richard Stirrup saw Spalding win a penalty, but goalkeeper Reay saved his team-mate’s bacon by making a magnificent stop from Leon Mettam. Reay’s moment of magic, which drew huge applause, simply spurred the Steels on. A rich vein of pressure followed and a second goal felt inevitable. Litchfield and Scott Ruthven had been inches away prior to it arriving.

Once Miller walked, Spalding’s game was up and the Steels saw the final stages out with ease. Whether or not the Steels reach the play-offs, this latest win has to go down as one of their best league victories of the season as they were magnificent.
