Deadline extended after strong interest in former Ski Village site

A VERY strong demand in investors expressing an interest to develop Parkwood, incorporating the former Ski Village site, has led to Sheffield City Council agreeing to a short extension for potential investors to finalise their proposals.

72;3<4331589:8;2<-48.< 887/:6< :5;

The Council is hoping to receive a number of initial bids which will be evaluated as part of Sheffield’s Outdoor City and wider regeneration ambitions.

At Barkers of Sheffield

And to make sure there is the strongest applications possible, the Council has agreed to requests to extend the initial deadline by two weeks, to Friday April 21.

;9;<:8< :9#;95< 1964819;'<-;<58:98;2<340;<:5<:<0:/43*<+1546;55<-:*<+:,#<46<! ! '<46484:33*<5;3346( 29:%;94;5<21946(<8.;<16,;98:46<84/;5<70< 7932< :9< 6;)

It will then carry out more in-depth work with the shortlisted parties. The Council will ask that all groups work with the Friends of Parkwood Springs and other local groups to develop proposals that are of benefit to the surrounding area. Plans to create an outdoor adventure experience that will be the ‘jewel in the crown’ of The Outdoor City were first announced by Sheffield City Council in December.

Sheffield City Council wants to attract a developer to transform a site at Parkwood Springs into a nationally-significant attraction which will cement Sheffield’s reputation as The Outdoor City – the UK’s leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes.

The former ski village site sits within the wider open space of Parkwood Springs, which has seen major improvements over recent years, thanks to work between the Council, the Friends of Parkwood Springs group and other partners. New mountain bike trails and a dual slalom now attract around 10,000 visits a year – but there is potential for much more. An initial study indicates this is a viable commercial opportunity, and the Council invited developers to put forward ideas for the wider Parkwood Springs area that will transform it into an urban country park of regional and national importance. A mountain biking trail centre, urban bike park or national snow sports centre could be on the cards, or a combination of different adventure activities, depending on market interest.

Local News A NATIONAL STUDY LEAD BY STOCKSBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL TAKES NEUROSCIENCE INTO THE CLASSROOM STOCKSBRIDGE High School, along with a teaching school in Sheffield, has developed an innovative and practical new way to teach science to teenagers, using funding from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and the Wellcome Trust. Smart Spaces, developed by the Hallam Teaching School Alliance, run by Notre Dame High School, Sheffield, builds on evidence from neuroscience and psychology that suggests information is more easily learnt and recalled when it’s repeated multiple times and separated by periods of unrelated activity. Teachers at Stocksbridge High School were involved in leading this major study into a new learning strategy for students studying GCSE science. Two thousand pupils in 15 schools took part in a small development study of the programme. Teachers were trained to give short, intensive biology, chemistry and physics lessons to Year nine and 10 pupils, aged 13 to 15. The 12-minute sessions were repeated twice and broken up with ‘spaces’, where the pupils did something completely different as a distraction activity.

For the study this was juggling, as this is a skill that uses parts of the brain not usually associated with learning science. The independent evaluators from the Centre for Effective Education at Queen’s University Belfast reported that the programme was successfully integrated into school timetables. Teachers found the ‘spaced’ lessons easy to deliver and pupils appeared to respond well. The researchers found some preliminary evidence that the most promising version of the programme was a combination of long and short ‘spaces’. “We hope this will be a time efficient way of helping teachers provide a new revision strategy for all students in science,” says Alastair Gittner, project leader at Stocksbridge High School. Stocksbridge High School was one of only six projects that were awarded grants and the only school. Other successful bids came from major universities like Cambridge and Oxford. It is important that schools like Stocksbridge are leading the way with research into what works in schools. The EEF will now be looking to fund a randomised controlled trial to find out whether the programme has an impact on grades.

Serving the local community since 2002

A ROYAL Horticultural Society initiative to change grey areas into green has encouraged residents in Burncross to embrace the idea on a disused ex-Sheffield Highways depot, at the junction of Bracken Hill and Penistone Road. Under the guidance of Gavin Hardy, a RHS Regional Development Officer, a plan was proposed to create a wildflower and wildlife area utilising the existing discarded materials.

Burncross Action Team secured a three-year free lease from Sheffield City Council and successfully applied to the RHS to fund seeds and equipment. ‘Greening Grey Britain’ is a community project involving young people and local volunteers. This has been achieved. Children from Windmill Hill Primary School designed plans using the onsite materials, took part in scientific experiments and later will be invited to

As part of their curriculum, students from Ecclesfield School are working alongside volunteers with the more onsite manual tasks. Although significant progress has been made, this is a long term project. However, the wildflower seeds must be planted by early May to ensure a visual impact in summer 2017. If you are interested in getting involved, contact brendahind@sky.com

Your Letters Friendship lunch

I want to make readers aware of the proposed plans for the A61 and Wentworth Island, and to put the record straight about Angram Bank Children’s Centre. For those who may not have heard, Highways England are undertaking a scheme for the Trans-Pennine route between Manchester and Sheffield. I support work to reduce congestion and improve our environmental but the two proposals have been badly thought-out and put forward prior to adequate consultation with local stakeholders. Incredibly the Fire Service weren’t spoken to beforehand, despite the fact it will affect the deployment of fire engines from the nearby station, and they only found out about the proposal because I contacted them.

We have now started a Friendship Lunch at the Bridge Inn, Chapeltown, and the inaugural event two months ago was kindly sponsored by Noel Hinchliffe, MD of Essential Promotions in Deepcar. This is undoubtedly a brilliant example of a local business helping to support the local community. The sponsorship by Noel enabled us to invite 40 people free and the event was a huge success.

Of further worry the plans give no details regarding Wentworth Island, currently all traffic at rush-hour queues the full length of the roads from J35a & J36 of the M1 to this The second Friendship Lunch at the island, and the proposed works will Bridge Inn was also a huge success likely put additional strain on this busy pressure point. and tickets sold very quickly at £5 In my submission to the consultation each. I requested changes to the emergency These events are undoubtedly planning routes so they do not push excellent tools for us in our quest to motorway traffic through Hoyland combat/reduce loneliness and social - so traffic does not go straight past isolation across the city. a school and through the centre of Chapeltown, with improvements The next event is on Tuesday May made to the to the slip road at J35a. 2 and you would be more than welcome to come along as our guest I am not content with just speaking and see for yourself why these are so with Highways England alone and I have contacted Sheffield City successful and so hugely enjoyable. Council’s relevant cabinet member Kind Regards, Kathy Markwick, and have sought Parish support in Community Development Officer challenging proposals as they stand.

Your Letters

I would also like to take this opportunity to again put the record straight regarding Angram Bank. Rumours are still circulating that the centre is due to close. I am in frequent contact with Sheffield Council about the changes to children’s services and I can assure readers that this is simply not the case. At the last Parish Council meeting a vote was taken to keep Angram Bank running the same service it is currently doing. I did not vote for this as I instead voted for more services to be provided – with more acute and specialist work as well as early years provisions - as is the proposal from Sheffield City Council. Angram Bank is categorically not about to close and the early years’ service will still continue. At present the service provides specifically for families and children of zero to five years. The change, however, will see centres becoming Family Centres which will cover the ages of zero to 19 (or 25 years for young people with a disability). Early years support will still be provided at Angram Bank but there will soon be greater scope and support for older children as well. The plans should be firmly welcomed and will lead to improved services for our children and young people. Councillor Zoe Sykes

Editorial Feature Gardening APRIL is a busy month for gardeners – there’s sowing and planting to be done – and it’s time to turn your attention to long lost friends such as your vegetable patch

www.looklocal.org.uk

17

It’s considered a romantic flower that most gardeners get the urge to plant in their garden sooner or later and can add real value with its scent and shades of blue flowers and silver leaf backdrop. To successfully grow lavender, it needs to be planted in a warm, well drained soil with full sun and can also do well in a container.

Finish off sowing seeds for early lettuces, summer carrots, dwarf peas, summer spinach and broad beans and start sowing beetroots, brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts and cabbage), peas, turnips and swede.

It is often planted as an edging plant with roses or grown as an informal hedge. However, lavender does not like ‘wet feet’ as it promotes root rot and ‘dampness’ is often the reason that it doesn’t perform well.

You can also plant the first early potatoes, weather dependent. For beginners, some of the easiest fruits to grow are berries.

It’s a tough plant though and once established only requires regular pruning after flowering in the Autumn.

Strawberries and blueberries love containers or open ground and both will crop heavily once established.

April really kick starts the gardening season.

A simple garden solution for April is to create your very own veg patch. Mark out the area well, prepare the soil, dig in compost and then sow a variety of seeds that will provide you with veg all year round.

Here are some jobs you should be thinking about this month: • Keep an eye out for pests – snails and slugs love new foliage as do aphids

It’s a common misconception that you need a lot of space to be able to grow vegetables. You can still achieve real success with container grown plants. Tomatoes will thrive in pots and grow bags and can also be grown in the ground.

• Start feeding plants in the garden from now to the end of the summer

Another plant that loves container life (and being in borders as well) is Lavender - a favourite with gardeners not just for its beautiful form and

• Prune shrubs and trees

• Sow seeds directly into the soil so they can flower in the summer • Plant summer flowering bulbs • Apply mulch or manure to flower beds and pots • Feed and care for the lawn

fragrance but also because it attracts essential pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

It’s a key month for planting vegetables and fruit in the garden, and from now on until late autumn you will be sowing, planting and harvesting.

Editorial Feature Gardening

May is a great gardening month and probably the last month you can plan for your summer colour in the garden.

The problem with the most common weeds such as nettles, dandelions and bindweed is that they are very, very tough.

For those with limited space, bedding plants will give you maximum effect and can really make a statement.

They can continue to grow in conditions that make most garden plants simply fade away – and they do it, in part, by using the moisture, nutrients and light of the plants around them.

If you are taking a long-term view then a garden full of reliable flowering shrubs is also an option For a bit of inspiration and because it’s one of the best garden show in the world, you could always visit Chelsea Flower Show (23-27 May). At Chelsea you can see garden designs and planting ideas for all budgets and all spaces - from the minimalist and ultra modern to country cottage and rural retreat. Whatever garden you have, watering and weeding are the key watchwords for May. It’s essential to water newly planted fruit trees, roses and shrubs regularly to help their root systems get established. It’s also the time of year when many plants’ demand for water increases as they start their major growth period. Top watering tips include – every time you plant something water it in well, make a moat of soil round newly planted plants so that water doesn’t run off and goes to the roots, water pots and containers so that water appears right to the top of the pot and get a water butt. If you have a drainpipe you have a natural water supply so a simple garden solution for May is ensure that you have adequate water storage. A simple project for this month would be to buy and fit a water butt that will provide you with water for the garden in an environmentally friendly way and on a regular basis. Annual weeds will be popping up now, so weeding borders once a week to prevent weed seedlings establishing is a good idea.

The best thing you can do with weeds is to use them and make them into compost to benefit the plants that you really want to live with. A great plant to get you into the summer gardening spirit is the pretty Petunia.– perfect for containers and hanging baskets and a great choice for instant colour. It can flower all summer long, providing you deadhead regularly, and comes in a variety of colours to suit any garden palette.

Spring into

Summer Summer

Petunias are also available in different blooms including single, double, ruffled or smooth petals. They can be striped, veined or solid in colour and most sold today are hybrids developed for specific design purposes such as fragrance. They need full sun and can’t tolerate frost but can grow in a wide range of soils and thrive in multipurpose compost when planted in containers. Keeping on top of garden maintenance is crucial in May. The garden is coming alive so there is plenty to keep you busy. Here are some jobs you should be thinking about this month. • Plant out seedlings and young plants • Watering and weeding • Start spraying roses to stop black spot and mildew • Fast growing hedges will need a trim • Plant hanging baskets and containers • Plant salad leaves seeds • Tie up climbers • Feed spring bulbs for next year • Plant out tomatoes • Mow the lawn

Go wild this Easter weekend WITH the amount of time children and families are spending outside in nature in decline, Europe’s largest conservation charity and discount supermarket ALDI, are challenging South Yorkshire families to go on their own wild adventure this Easter to be in with a chance of winning a bumper pack of prizes worth over £500 as they launch the new and exciting Wild Challenge. In 2013, the RSPB Connecting with Nature report revealed that children in the UK were missing out on a wealth of mental and physical benefits from not spending enough time outside, with only one in five having a healthy connection to nature. To encourage more children and their families to take a step closer to nature the RSPB has launched the Wild Challenge.

By completing fun and engaging activities ranging from minibeast safaris and rock pooling to creating a hedgehog cafe and planting for wildlife, families can take their first steps on their own wild adventure. There are 24 activities to choose from that will take you from your own back garden to exploring towns, cities, woodlands and even the coast. Participants can then log their achievements on the RSPB Wild Challenge website and collect bronze, silver and gold awards. The Wild Challenge is open to all; whether you live in a busy city, seaside haven or a sleepy village. There is something to do at all times of the year, no matter what the weather. Each activity comes with helpful ideas and resources to help families on their wild adventure. Every family who achieves a bronze, silver on gold award during the month of April

will be entered into a prize draw to win the Ultimate Wild Challenge explorer kit worth over £500. The kit includes a selection of wildlife goodies including a hedgehog home, minibeast explorer kit and a bat detector to help them continue on their wild adventure. The RSPB’s ambition is for the Wild Challenge to help more families across the country reap the benefits of spending time outside in nature. Research has shown that children who have a healthy connection to nature are more likely to benefit from higher achievement at school, better mental and physical health, and develop stronger social skills.

SPSFC are looking to secure the services of a suitable adult to support the club in the role of Assistant Club Welfare Officer. Ideally you will live around the local area and be able to spend a short amount of time (on average 2-3 minutes at on each occasion) to undertake the verification of record checks for club officials.

Initially you will need to be able to attend the local FA training provided to undertake the role (3 hours). A register of current club officials is established and you will help by monitoring this, liaising with coaches to inform them of any outstanding training requirements or checks and reporting our current status to senior club officials. It is a crucial role to ensure the club is both compliant and safe for our children, which is why you will be fully supported by the existing Club Welfare Officer and Club Chairman in the role.

PIGS FACE BATTLE Stocksbridge 31–22 Harrogate

STOCKSBRIDGE need to take a five-point win in their final game of the season if they are to avoid relegation from Yorkshire Three after losing 31-22 to fellow strugglers Harrogate on Saturday. A converted Stefan Kazmierski try and another effort from Pete Newton saw The Pigs lead 12-10 at the break and despite going 22-10 up after Ben Brown and Sam Whitaker crashed over, Harrogate scored three tries without reply to take victory. Although it will be a tough feat for Stocksbridge to stay in the league, it is not mathematically impossible for them to turn it around with a five-point win in their last game against Old Otliensians.

Footpath Runners in half marathon action THE popular Sheffield half marathon, now restyled as the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon, took place on Sunday. A tough race with the new route now in it’s third year taking runners out of the city centre up to edge of the Peak District then a fast second half back to a city centre finish. The club had a strong turn out with seven finishers led home by new recruit Gareth Cooke in 16th place in 78.48.

Tigers lose to Workington SHEFFIELD slipped to a 54-37 defeat in their SGB Championship encounter at Workington on Saturday night. The Window Centre Tigers were unable to claim any points for the second straight away meeting on a tough evening at Derwent Park. The powerful Comets put in an impressive display, and Simon Stead’s side did not quite have enough firepower to respond. Team boss Stead admitted it was a frustrating night for his side – but he is keen to bounce back when they host Ipswich at Owlerton on Thursday (7.30). Said Stead: “I’m more than a bit disappointed because I really thought we’d be good enough to get a result from that meeting. “To not only come away with nothing but to come away with a disappointing result like that is really frustrating.

“Things just didn’t click for us tonight. We had lots of mechanical trouble and a few refereeing decisions which didn’t go our way, but ultimately we didn’t perform well enough and that’s what will happen. “We’ll just have to regroup and start fresh on Thursday to try to get back on track against a strong Ipswich side.” Skipper Kyle Howarth and No.1 Josh Grajczonek offered the bulk of the Tigers’ resistance, combining for 21 points and three of their four race wins. Aussie ace Todd Kurtz also put in a solid showing, taking the chequered flag in heat 12 on his way to a nine-point haul. Reserve Robert Branford notched paid seven, but Josh Bates and Jack Parkinson-Blackburn struggled to make an impact whilst rider replacement scored just 4+1 points in place of the injured Lasse Bjerre.
