An unoccupied house on Foster Way was damaged two weeks ago when an abandoned mattress was set on fire and left propped up against the rear of the property. The fire spread to the roof and three fire engines were needed to tackle the blaze. It isn’t the first time the property has been attacked there has also been a fire at the front of the house. Another house has had windows broken and one concerned man, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of being targeted by the youths, says that not enough has been done about the attacks.

He told Look Local: “This isn’t just a one-off. There have been six wheelie bins set on fire that I know of, this house has been set on fire twice and another one has had the windows broken. I think they’ve taken boilers too. “The section of housing where it’s happening is full of disabled and elderly people. It’s only a matter of time before one of their houses are targeted. “My partner is a blind amputee who has had a stroke. If something like this happens to our house and I’m not in, I dread to thin what might happen. Following the spate of crime, residents have sought action from the Council and police but say that nothing has happened.

The man continues, “The police said that more patrols would be put in the area but we haven’t seen any police at all. “We’ve reported it to the Council and they said they’d get back to us but we’ve heard nothing. The house that was on fire had a bit of plastic sheeting put on the roof and that’s started to blow off now. It’s scary. “It happens in fits and starts but this is the worst I’ve known it. TRAGIC: The incident led to the death of 15-year-old Summer Seymour A 51-year-old man has been jailed for ten months after admitting causing the death of one teenager, and life-threatening injuries in another teenager, in a collision in Sheffield city centre. Paul Andrew Brown, of Cannon Hall Road, Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday April 13 to be sentenced after pleading guilty to causing death by driving without due care or attention at a hearing last month. He was jailed for ten months, as well as being banned from driving for 17 months. The court heard how Brown, a bus driver, was driving a single decker bus through Haymarket in Sheffield city centre on Friday 11 December 2015. He struck two teenagers crossing the road, 15-yearold Summer Seymour, a former Bradfield School pupil – who sadly died as a result of her injuries – and critically injuring 17-year-old Jake Ford. Investigating officer PC Paul Lidster said: “While this is a positive result, with Brown now facing

He and his family have understandably been tremendously affected by this incident and I hope that today’s hearing marks a further step forward in his recovery. “Incidents of this nature demonstrate the horrific repercussions should a driver lose focus or shift their attention while driving. On this particularly sad occasion, one child lost their life and another is trying to rebuild theirs. “Let this serve as a warning to any motorist that carelessness when driving can have fatal consequences and wherever we can, we will prosecute individuals who put lives at risk by driving dangerously or carelessly.”

MAN KILLED IN MOTORBIKE COLLISION A 20-year-old man has sadly died following a collision on Langsett Road North in Sheffield on the morning of Sunday April 16. Local News IN January, a controversial housing development was unveiled by Hallam Land Management, an arm of Sheffield construction company, Henry Boot. The 93+ dwelling scheme is earmarked for fields next to Royd Farm between Bolsterstone and Deepcar. The green field site is next to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. Following a public meeting called by community campaign body Upper Don Action Group (UDAG), objections flooded into Sheffield City Council’s planning department. The result is that the Council has decided that any planning application will require a full Environmental Impact Assessment. John Hesketh, chairman of UDAG, the local community group campaigning against the new ‘village’ at Royd Farm off Hollin Busk Lane/Carr Rd, Deepcar, told Look Local: “The City Council’s decision to require an Environment Impact Assessment as part of any planning application at Royd Farm, Deepcar, is the right one. “UDAG and many local residents have pointed to the many and varied

environmental issues that the proposal raises: from wildlife to traffic, from impact on the Green Belt to pressure on local amenities, from extending urban sprawl to adding pressure on local schools and medical centres.”

SITE: Over 93 homes would be built here if the application goes ahead

The former chairman of Sheffield Planning committee added: “All these factors and more are the reason why any planning application for such a large new ‘village’ on farmland must have a full examination of the impact on the environment. UDAG welcomes the Council’s decision. “What residents and community groups want now is to see the proposal in detail. We’d all like to see how the developer believes the considerable environmental hurdles can be cleared. “At UDAG, we don’t believe that the environmental problems for such a large housing scheme on farmland are easily solved. UDAG will be campaigning against the proposed Royd Farm ‘village’.” For details on the application, see planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/onlineapplications/applicationDetails.do?active Tab=neighbourComments&keyVal=OJN VSINY0A500

Bakewell Food Festival The Bakewell Food Festival returns for its sixth year, celebrating the wealth of excellent local produce that the Peak District and this beautiful market town have to offer. As well as the multi-award winning farmers market in the Agricultural Business Centre, the town’s historic streets will host more than their usual splendid offerings of food.

Fresh look at historic rail route IT was once a major cross-Pennine rail route, steam trains packed with freight or passengers thundering through Peak District tunnels at regular intervals.

Now walkers and cyclists can learn more about the Woodhead Route and its three tunnels, thanks to an improved interpretation panel. The new panel has been installed close to the platform of the former Woodhead station, which now forms part of the Trans Pennine trail. It follows work by the National Grid to install replacement cables in tunnel 3, which was built in the 1950s. As part of the work, the entrances to two mid-19th century tunnels were sealed and the former station area improved. The National Grid funded infrastructure works and the interpretation panel, which was installed by the Peak District National Park’s countryside maintenance team.

Government announces funding for new Sheffield special free school SHEFFIELD is one of just 20 Local Authorities that has been successful in securing funding for a new special school the Government announced yesterday. The new school will provide for youngsters in the city with some of the most complex needs. It will provide around 30 places for children aged between seven and 16 who have autism and social, emotional and mental health needs. The funding includes the costs of building the school as well as an additional £500k for set up costs. The Council will now start working with colleagues from the Department for Education as we begin

the process to secure a great sponsor to run the new school. Jayne Ludlam, Director of Children Services at Sheffield City Council said: “This is great news for Sheffield. “The new school will make sure that more children with autism and social, emotional and mental health needs are able to access the education opportunities that they need locally. “It will provide parents and young people with more choice and will enable these youngsters to reach their potential and gain the qualifications to match. We look forward to sharing more details as this exciting plan develops.”

Pupils create work of art to celebrate Yorkshire’s biggest bike race PUPILS from Stocksbridge Junior School are working with South Yorkshire based artists Sara Beavan-Widdowson and Robin Widdowson to create a striking piece of art to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire. The three-day race will finish at Fox Valley on the afternoon of Sunday April 30 – less than a mile away from Stocksbridge Junior School. The school has a week of events planned in the run up to the race and the 388 students have been busy working with artists and sculptors Sara and Robin to create a unique piece of art that celebrates the heritage of the local area and this prestigious cycling event. Pupils have been drawing and printing self-portraits and sketching places and buildings that they feel represent the town’s heritage. They did this in their classes and a selection of students from each class was chosen to work with Sara on the finer detail for the circular artwork. The final piece will reflect images from the creative work done by the children and displayed at Fox Valley ahead of the race for all to see. Robin said: “We have been running workshops with the pupils and getting them thinking

about what they wanted to see in the final piece. It’s been a great project to be involved with and seems to have really grabbed the children’s’ imagination ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire.” Teacher David Wright said: “We have loved been involved with the project – it has been a great way to get involved with the Tour de Yorkshire and also to think about what the area means to the pupils and what is important to them about Stocksbridge – we can’t wait to see the finished piece at Fox Valley.” The Tour de Yorkshire starts on Friday 28th April in Bridlington and the final day will see the cyclists set off from Bradford and cover 194 km before arriving in Fox Valley at around 5pm. The north Sheffield shopping centre is owned and managed by the South Yorkshire company Dransfield Properties Ltd. Head of Communications at the company, Amanda Holmes said: “We are really in the build up to the event now and there is so much happening across the area now as we prepare for the big race coming to Stocksbridge. “It’s great to see the work which is going in to this wonderful piece of art to celebrate the event and we’re delighted it will be displayed at Fox Valley.”

Supporting sporty women With the Tour de Yorkshire on the horizon, people are getting on their bikes and taking to the hills. But whatever form of exercise you choose, finding a comfortable sports bra that meets all your needs is difficult. Luckily, one Yorkshire business is dedicated to providing the support that all sporty females need.

Newly opened Bella Eve Boutique specialises in beautiful and pretty bras ranging from an A to K cup along with swimwear up to the same cup sizes. Also passionate about supporting local businesses the boutique stocks accessories and bespoke ladies wear made by local designers.

Photo: Melanie Ditchfield

Owner Jen Jackson has an extensive background in Quality Assurance, Compliance & Customer Service and is a self-confessed shopaholic. Jen wanted to open a boutique locally that could provide all ladies with specialist underwear - where the phrase no one size fits all could not be more appropriate here. “Being a J cup myself I know how hard it is to find bras that not only fit comfortably but are also available in pretty colours,” says Jen. Bella Eve has secured deals with a range of soughtafter underwear labels including Curvy Kate, Chantelle and Passionate along with must-have swimwear in a range of colours and patterns. Jen is focused on practicality too and has searched high and low for the ideal sports bra that is both comfortable and fashionable. The Enell high impact sports bra comes in a wide range of colours, currently stocked in the boutique is black, white and the current fashion colour which at the moment is red and blue, but this changes seasonally.

Bella Eve also offers a free personal measuring service and with Jen being trained to fit bra’s by eye, it’s clear you are in good hands. “I offer a very personal service and always make sure that customers leave knowing their correct size and, if they see something they like but I don’t have their size in stock I am more than happy to order it in.” It’s not only bras that Bella Eve stocks, they also have a range of ladies wear supplied from local designers including; House of Blonde, Katie Newsam Fashion and Curious Em. “Penistone On’t Tour” best dressed house PENISTONE’S preparations to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire coming through the town are definitely well underway. “We launched the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Penistone on Saturday April 1” explained Penistone’s Mayor, Paul Hand-Davis, “by asking the Woodhead Mountain Rescue team to abseil down St John the Baptist’s Church to help fix a huge banner to the tower. At a 80ft drop, this was definitely something not to be sniffed at. To continue with our celebrations, we are asking all of the houses on the route to get involved and ‘dress their house’. The more elaborate the better. It all adds to the buzz and excitement.”

THE team at north Sheffield’s Fox Valley shopping centre are on the countdown to hosting the finish of Yorkshire’s biggest cycle race later this month. The three day Tour de Yorkshire race will be watched by millions of spectators along the route and the area is preparing to put on a fantastic show for the last day on Sunday April 30.

CAMPING AVAILABLE ON SITE SAT 29th and SUN 30th

Towns and villages are being decorated in a sea of blue and yellow bikes and bunting with lots of entertainment and land art planned along the route.

The trophies which will be awarded to the winners of the men’s and women’s race visited the area last week, stopping off at schools, leisure centres and some of the stores and the Friday market at Fox Valley.

The flag which will mark out the finish point has been delivered to Fox Valley ahead of the big event and this week has also seen the Trophy Tour visit schools and businesses in north Sheffield.

CAMPING TICKETS AT:

Stocksbridge Cricket Club

@stocksbridgecc

The trophies have been designed and made by hand at world leading trophy makers Thomas Fattorini Ltd – the Y is made of brass and copper based alloy, which has been polished and gold plated. The decisive stage of this year’s race –titled The Yorkshire Terrier due to its punishing climbs – will finish at Fox Valley on the afternoon of Sunday April 30th and will include the “Stocksbridge Sprint” on Manchester Road. The final sprint points are up for grabs at around 16:47pm before the weary riders tackle a gruelling

22km concluding loop featuring no less than four categorised climbs. The Cote de Deepcar is the first climb at 6:52pm and the Cotes de Wigtwizzle (16:58pm) and Ewden Height (17:01) come one after the other before one last drag up the Cote de Midhopestones at 17:07pm. The winner of the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire is expected to cross the finish line in Fox Valley at 17:15pm. Fox Valley is a new town centre development which opened in June 2016 and is home to a host of national and independent retailers. The centre was announced as the finish line for the third edition of the Tour de Yorkshire in December last year and Dransfield Properties, the company which owns and manages Fox Valley, is working with local groups and stakeholders to giving a big South Yorkshire welcome to the event. Managing Director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “We really are in the build up to the event now and it’s great to see some of the towns and villages in the area getting ready and making a real effort to welcome the ride to our part of South Yorkshire. “This is going to put Stocksbridge and Fox Valley on the map and we’re hoping businesses and residents in the area will give the race a huge welcome and make this the best Tour de Yorkshire finish the county has seen.” To find out more about Fox Valley visit www. foxvalleysheffield.co.uk and to find out about the Tour de Yorkshire go to www.letour.yorkshire. com

THE second of the South Yorkshire five-mile road races took place Wednesday, at Worsbrough. A windy night saw 358 runners finish. Well done to Scott Hinchcliffe for his second win of the series, with a storming second half performance. On Good Friday to kick things off was the now annual Bridlington East five-mile dash, two runners from the club took part Matt Coldwell and David Needham, who was racing his fourth race since Sunday, proving that age is but a number! The main race round these parts on Good Friday is the very fast and popular Salford 10k, a two lap course brings out the top chaps from clubs on both sides on the Pennines. The top 25 all posted sub-

33 times. Footpath runners had one runner in the form of Gareth Cooke, who was also racing for the fourth time since Sunday. He officially got a brand new PB in 34.28. Easter Monday saw four runners take part in the Boston Marathon UK (& half) with Richard Hayes, Damien Briscoe and Dean Allcroft finishing third team, with Richard and Damien both posting new PB’s, Dawn Broom did the half in 1:44.31. A bit closer to home was the Ackworth Half Marathon that also doubled up as the Yorkshire Vets HM, three runners took part with Gareth Cooke following up his performance Friday with second overall in 78.21, also running was Simon Pike and John Lawcock.

BARNSLEY College Sports Academy female footballers are celebrating getting through to the Association of Colleges National Cup Final after they beat Hopwood Hall College 7-1. The semi-final took place at the £150 million Manchester City Academy where three goals from Britt Sanderson put Barnsley College in the driving seat. They wrapped up the win with a brace from Amy Woodruff and a goal apiece from Rebecca Jeffels and Caitlan Tattershall. The team will now play Brighton College in the final on Thursday 4 May at Walsall Football Club stadium, a professional football club in League One of the football league. Bethany Ayrton, a Sport Performance and Excellence student, said: “I have been playing football since I was six years old and the support from the college has been the best yet. “The build up to the final is going to be nerveracking and a lot of pressure, but we are committed to training and the tutors are helping us to develop all the time. The support from the college and staff has been immense.” Rikki Paylor, the Sports Academy female team coach, added: “The students have worked incredibly hard to get to the final. I’m very proud of what they have achieved; it has been a privilege to coach such talented and dedicated young people.” Barnsley College’s Sports Academy is open to talented sports students on any college course. Flying start to season for Winfield ON Sunday April 9 four riders of the Geared Up Cycles race team headed to North Newbald in the Yorkshire wolds to race in the Keith Carter Memorial Road Race.

was down to around 20 of the 60 starters by the last lap.

The race was held on the notorious Newbald circuit with its 1.5mile climb, with the riders doing seven laps and covering 52 miles with 3,500ft of elevation gain.

He gave everything and managed to hold his lead up the climb to the line, taking a fantastic solo win in one of the hardest races of the year.

It was fast from the off and a breakaway group of seven riders got clear on the second lap. Dan Winfield and Mike Brown made a big effort to bridge over and make it a group of nine. They were brought back by the remainder of the peloton as the pace stayed high. The group was reducing every time they hit the main climb and

Team rider Dan Winfield attacked with around five miles to go, escaping from the bunch on his own.

Other Geared Up Cycles members Tom Davison and Mike Brown finished 11th and 12th respectively. Dave Beachill and junior rider Jake Feetham competed in the Out of the saddle race at Braithwell and both finished in the main group, missing out on the placings for points in a bunch sprint to the line.
