FRoM DaD To aUTHoR iN a YeaR SAT in a café writing a joke Facebook post last January, Stocksbridge man Matt Coyne couldn’t possibly have envisaged what the next year would hold for him. Matt, 42, and partner Lyndsay Cooper had just welcomed their son Charlie into the world and at three months old he was having his first trip out at Meadowhall. Matt decided to write a few notes about his experience as a fledging father and was surprised when his humorous post received more than the usual one or two ‘likes’. But by the end of the week, his post had been shared 75,000 times and media outlets the world over were clamouring to speak to him about his viral fame. “I remember being on Australian television via satellite,” Matt recalls, “Before I was on there was a bloke trying to set a world record for cracking a whip and then after I was on, there was a man who’d lost a toe on some patio furniture. I’d had a few drinks and it was all a bit surreal.”
BABY RAVE: The launch party and above, Matt with his inspiration, son Charlie
“Excellent”
Fast forward a year and Matt has a Facebook page and website, ‘Man Versus Baby’, where he regularly updates his followers on what’s been happening at home. This led to a bidding war from a number of publishers and on
April 20, his first book, ‘Dummy, The comedy and the chaos of real-life parenting’ was released to critical acclaim.
“I was terrified of the reviews!” Matt tells Look Local. “I was worried they’d be terrible but the response has been amazing. “On Amazon, my book has five stars. That’s a star more than The Bible and half a star more than the complete works of Shakespeare so I can’t grumble at that. It’s so strange going to WH Smiths and seeing my book on the shelves. “The book has been translated into German, French and Chinese. It’s actually appeared on North Korea’s Internet!” To launch his book, Matt teamed up with a company called Boomchikkaboom! To host a ‘baby rave’ in Wakefield and true to form, the response bowled Matt over. “Tickets for the event were on sale on the internet and it sold out really quickly. I had people messaging me and asking if they could come down and I was telling them it’d be fine. I was sat there and more and more people just kept arriving. It was crazy.” As well as hordes of fans, Matt also gets the odd ‘troll’ and he enjoys witty exchanges with visitors to his Facebook page but
he’s also had some more serious and positive feedback. “I’ve had messages from parents who have been struggling with depression, thinking they’re bad parents. They tell me that my posts helped them to realise that everyone struggles. “One of the quotes from the sleeve of my book is from Ashton Kutcher – it just goes to show, parenting cuts through things like class. Everyone struggles with parenting. Those messages alone have made this all worthwhile.” Matt is making appearances all over the country in support of his new book before starting work on the already hotly-anticipated sequel. On Thursday April 27, he is appearing at the Orchard Square Waterstones. It runs from 7pm to 8.30pm and is ticket only. Tickets are £3 and include a glass of wine. You can buy them at www.waterstones.com/events/ an-evening-with-matt-coyne/ sheffield-orchard-square You can find the Man Versus Baby Facebook page at www. facebook.com/manversusbaby and the book is available from Amazon for £8 quid and also at all good bookshops.

A MAN who died following a collision in the Langsett Road area of Sheffield, has been named as Sam Pickering. At around 7.45am on Sunday April 16, Mr Pickering was riding his grey Yamaha motorbike along Langsett Road North, near to the junction with Bedford Road when the collision occurred. Sam Pickering, aged 20, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Mr Pickering’s mum Lorna and step dad Ian, have released a short statement: “Easter Sunday 2017 will be a day never to be forgotten as it is the day my beautiful son, Sam, lost his life whilst on his way to attend the charity egg run for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital along with his step-dad.

“Sam regularly attended the charity event after first going in 2005. He loved every minute of being able to meet other riders and spend time with friends such as James Toseland. “Sam was a loud and proud person with a huge personality. He always had a smile on his face and only ever wanted to do good in life.
“Ride free my precious child, I will never forget you and we will love you forever.” Mr Pickering’s dad, Stephen also said: “He was my son and friend and I will miss him.” A friend of Sam’s, Karl Fretwell, has called for as many bikers as possible to attend the funeral on Saturday May 6. Karl said: “Sam’s final ride will take place on Saturday May 6 from Stocksbridge to Grenoside Crematorium. “We will gather from 9.30am at Fox Valley, Stocksbridge, and depart at 10.30am sharp in order to meet with the hearse as it comes down the hill from the family home, arriving at Grenoside for 11am. We would like as many bikes and trikes to attend as possible.” Officers are currently investigating the collision and anyone who may have been in the area at the time, or saw the collision, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 262 of April 16.

Bells and bikes in Bolsterstone
AS part of the Tour de Yorkshire celebrations on Sunday April 30, Bolsterstone Village Hall will be serving hot and cold food all day. Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir and Deepcar Brass Band will be entertaining the visitors to Bolsterstone. St Mary’s Church tower bells will be ringing in celebration of this event and their 125 year anniversary. Installed in 1892, the bells and frame are unique and of historical interest. Fundraising is ongoing for repairs with the cost being in excess of £100,000 necessary to keep the bells ringing. If you are interested in tower bellringing then in between the cycle races, call into St Mary’s Church where bellringers will be pleased to discuss the renovation project. ‘LITTLE MESTER’ CARRIES ON PROUD SHEFFIELD TRADITION ALTHOUGH the cutlery industry of Sheffield no longer operates on the huge scale that it previously did, there are still those flying the flag for knives bearing the famous ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark. Look Local previously featured worldfamous Deepcar man Stan Shaw, 91 and still working. He is known as Sheffield’s ‘last little mester’ and was awarded with a British Empire Medal for his services to the industry. But the steel valley has produced another knife-maker who has set up independently and although relatively young at the age of 38, Michael May has a wealth of experience in the industry already. After 11 years working at Taylor Eyewitness, Deepcar-born Michael decided to go it alone and has been working at his workshop in Portland Works in the city centre for six months now. “Things just came together all of a sudden,” Michael explains. “A cutler called Trevor Ablett retired and was selling off all his tools so I decided to buy them and start out for myself making pocketknives. “You need top quality tools to make top quality knives and a lot of this stuff just isn’t readily available. AT WORK: Cutler Michael May, 38, in his Portland Works workshop.
ENJOY REGULAR HOLIDAYS IN THE NORTH YORKSHIRE COUNTRYSIDE!
“I found this workshop and I’m really glad I did, it’s a great place with lots of other independent businesses here. It’s a proper community. I work on my own but I can
grab a cup of tea and go and have a chat to some of the other people.”
Like Stan, Michael has a busy order book and his emphasis is on quality. “I’m always busy, I have lots of orders and with the snooker championship on at the moment, the Millenium Gallery and Famous Sheffield Shop have ordered quite a few knives. “I like to have some for sale on the website but most of them are already spoken for by the time they’re finished.” There has been a proud revival of Sheffieldmade goods in recent years and Michael is proud to be a part of it. “I think there’s been a rediscovery of the craft. People are sick of stuff that doesn’t last. That ‘Made in Sheffield’ stamp means something. It’s a sign of quality and so I set myself very high standards. I don’t have any paid adverts and yet I’ve had orders from America and Australia. “I’ve made some knives from Damascus steel which is made in a forge here at Portland Works. There’s been a forge there since 1870.” Asked if he’ll be working at 91, Michael smiles but certainly isn’t joking when he gives his answer. “I’d love to be in Stan’s position when I’m his age. I want to keep going for as long as I can. He’s got lots of work on and I think that’s what keeps him young.” You can find Michael on Facebook or at www.michaelmayknives.com/

ON April 30, a cavalcade of bikes will make its way from Bradford, soaking in the picturesque tranquillity of Bolton Abbey and Grassington before dropping back to South Yorkshire via Skipton, Keighley and Halifax to Holmfirth. From there the peloton will head to Penistone and then through our unique undulating landscape – Oxspring, Thurgoland, Green Moor, Bolsterstone, the climbs of Cote de Midhopestones - finishing at Fox Valley. The majority of the route of Stage Three of the Tour De Yorkshire is breathtaking; many an amateur cyclist will want to ride those roads for years to come. When the Tour De France came to England in 2014 it showcased the hills and valleys of this area and the pain and rewards they have to offer to those who accept their challenges; a plethora of wannabe Bradley Wiggins were inspired to attempt the intimidating climb that is the Cote de Wigtwizzle on a Sunday morning, joining the already grizzled amateur veterans who had long been aware of the charms and frustrations our roads and tracks offer. But a local anti-fracking group, Frack Free Penistone and Stocksbridge, are concerned that much of this could be lost if fracking operations take place in the area. A spokesperson for the group told Look Local: “What would that route be like if the fields weren’t so green? If the air weren’t so fresh? What if the roads
were teaming with HGVs? Those are just some of the impacts that fracking will bring to our countryside if we freewheel the route of least resistance. “Cyclists want to feel the fresh clean air rushing past their face as they race down clear roads chasing down split times, the surroundings providing a stunning backdrop to their climbs and descents. “What are the direct impacts of fracking on that idyll? The air would be dirty and noxious, filled with dust, diesel and other fumes, by-products of both the process of fracking itself, and of the trucks delivering to and from the frack site 24/7. The amount of water needed to frack is huge – up to 500,000 litres for an initial drilling operation, with the potential of over another four million gallons through the life of each well. Once the process is finished still more tankers take the waste products from the process –containing poisons and Cancer causing chemicals –for disposal. “There would be less freewheeling up and down dale and more hoping not to be in the blind spot of one of a procession of tankers. Fracking would make impossible that glorious pursuit of a Personal Best, that life affirming challenge, that morning’s escape from the humdrum of work. The air would be changed; the roads would be changed; the physical appearance of the environment would be changed; above all, our lives would be changed. “We don’t have to accept this: in fact, it’s imperative that we fight it. The impact
on cyclists is just one example of the very real damage fracking will have on our community. The fracking promise is big – jobs, long term investment, being leaders in the community. The fracking reality is catastrophic. House prices will drop; our environment will be unrecognisable [one well spawns another, spawns another, and so on]; your drinking water, the drinking water of our children, will be unsafe, containing dangerous levels of chemicals that most definitely we should not drink; the air would be smoggy and dusty. And those jobs? They’ll last for a few years, and then the well will be dry.
They’ll be around on the weekend of the Tour events, so come, find them and ask us how you can help to prevent fracking.
The meeting takes place on Friday April 28, 11am to 1pm, at St. John’s Community Centre, Church Street, Penistone.

THE Stocksbridge and District History Society are opening their museum, in the Stocksbridge Town Hall, for the Tour De Yorkshire finish on Sunday April 30. The weekend of the TDY has enabled the Society to collaborate with Museums Sheffield and the Stocksbridge Town Council in mounting the largest public display of locally produced Bolsterstone Glass and Midhope Pottery. These collections have been in store at the Western Park archives and have not been on public display for many decades. They were originally donated to Western Park and Mappin Art Gallery by Joseph Kenworthy and by Mr Daniel Evans, his having purchased the entire Kenworthy Bolsterstone Glass collection at a Sotherby’s auction in the 1920s. These 17th, 18th and early 19th century collections of locally made exquisite glassware made at Pothouse and the artisan pottery at Midhopestones,

spanned 200 years of craftsmanship in the Little Don Valley, prior to the arrival of Samuel Fox and the world famous steelworks. Chairman of the History Society, Dennis Pindar said: “We are proud and thrilled to bring these collections back to Stocksbridge and this valley, where they were made, some of them over 350 years ago. “We are also grateful for the support and cooperation we have had from Museums Sheffield and their Curators in helping to bring this collection, together with our own, special Hepworth collection to the general public, making this, what must be, one of the largest Bolsterstone Glass collections on public display. Our thanks also go to Stocksbridge Town Council for allowing us to open the Museum to the public on this historic weekend for Stocksbridge.” The museum, just inside the entrance to the Town Hall, will be open on Sunday from 10am through to 5pm.

Warning signs of dementia Dementia is the umbrella term for the variety of conditions that can cause the brain to fail. One of those is Alzheimer’s disease which represents the majority of cases. We all experience normal, age related changes as we get older, however, dementia is marked by a gradual impoverishment of thought and other mental activities that eventually affect almost every aspect of life. With Dementia Awareness Week taking place soon, we are raising awareness of dementia by sharing some warning signs to look out for. Memory Loss that disrupts daily life- One of the most common signs of dementia is memory loss, especially if you notice your loved one forgetting very recent events. People with dementia often forget the current time and get lost in a familiar environment. They might lose track of dates, seasons, and the passage of time. Changes in mood or personality- A person with dementia may seem different from his/her usual self in ways that are difficult to identify or explain. They may become suspicious, irritable, depressed, apathetic, anxious, or confused, especially in situations where memory problems are causing difficulties. Difficulty Finding the Right Words- Another early sign of dementia is struggling to communicate thoughts the way you want to. This may mean that a person can’t seem to explain things. They may reach for the right words, but just can’t seem to grasp them. Conversations with an elderly parent who has dementia can become difficult and take longer than usual to conclude. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace stepsWe all misplace things from time to time, however, someone with dementia will place things in random or unusual places, and may even accuse others of stealing the misplaced items. The may lose the ability to objectively look for the misplaced items. A Failing Sense of Direction- Sense of direction and spatial orientation is a common function of thinking that starts to deteriorate with the onset of dementia. This can mean not recognizing once-familiar landmarks and forgetting regularly used directions. It also becomes more difficult to follow series of directions and step-by-step instructions. Difficulty in completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure- People with dementia often find it hard to complete every day, familiar tasks. Carrying out activities in the proper sequence might be challenging, such as forgetting the correct order to put on their clothes.

Struggling to Adapt to Change- For someone in the early stages of dementia, the experience is frightening. Suddenly they can’t remember people they know or follow what others are saying. They can’t remember why they went to the store and get lost on the way home. Because of this, they might crave routine and not want to try new things. Having difficulty adapting to changes is a typical sign of early dementia. Not all of these warning signs may be applicable in every case, but if you feel that your loved one may be experiencing one or more of these warning signs, or should you have any doubt, then it is best to seek professional advice, and the best place to start is with your GP. 954 Editorial Feature Tour de YorkshireIssue Call 0114 283 11 00 Last week Look Local printed a map of the Tour de Yorkshire route. It included predicted times the racers will be passing local areas of interest. Millhouse Green is the first place they pass, some time around 4.06pm. The finish at Fox Valley is predicted for 5.02pm. That’s just shy of an hour to get from Millhouse Green to Fox Valley, via some of the steepest hills in the area. Hmm. I ride bikes a lot. I’m not super serious. I like pastry and pints too much to ever be that fit, but I know my way round a puncture, I can index my gears, and I wear those silly padded Lycra shorts. I consider myself a cyclist. So I decided I’d ride the route to see just what separates the keen amateur from the professional. The proper event begins in Bradford at lunchtime, which is, frankly, ridiculous. I’d struggle to do that in the car without a rest stop or two. My ride begins, rather less impressively, on the roadside near Crow Edge, next to a Yorkshire Water hut. It takes me a couple of minutes to reach Millhouse Green, where I pass my first pub, the Blacksmith’s Arms. There’s a strong urge to retire here and spend the rest of the day in the pub, but I soldier on. A minute or so later the Huntsman tries to draw me in. Again I resist the urge to retire early, and ever the hero I spin on to Penistone. I soldier on despite the urge to retire early at the White Heart. By the time I reach the town centre I’ve been riding for about quarter of an hour. I quietly ignore the TdY schedule’s prediction for that section taking just three minutes. Because that’s madness. Never mind. It’s a lovely day. Penistone is on fine form. The sun is shining, the bunting looks great and the local chippy smells amazing. I skirt round the church, swoop under a couple of impressive railways arches and roll on towards Oxspring. I resist the urge to retire early at the Waggon and Horses, and push on towards my first climb of the day. I’ve got to get out of this valley somehow, and at the fantastically named “Cheese Bottom” the road takes a sudden turn skywards. I’m fresh of leg though, so I get my head down and begin the trudge. Between Oxspring and Thurgoland the TdY has scheduled three minutes. This climb alone takes me about five, and I reach Thurgoland a panting mess. I’m about 20 minutes behind the TdY schedule now, but who’s counting?
27th April 2017
www.looklocal.org.uk
The stretch of road out of Thurgoland offers lovely views of the landscape I’m heading into. Through Wortley my handlebar almost touches the Wortley Arms, but I fight the urge to retire there for the day. Plumetting down Finkle Street I do the full on aero tuck thing you see the pros do, but I don’t seem to go noticably faster and my eyes start watering so much I worry I’ll end up in a field. After the descent it’s a lovely meander along a peaceful, horse filled valley floor before I reach the foot of my next climb. This one is harder than the last. By the time I’ve huffed, puffed and sweated my embarrassing way into Green Moor I decide I’ve earned my first rest. Didn’t there used to be a pub up here? It’s long gone, so I settle for reading the info boards opposite the Millennium Green. I learn all about the area’s mining history. I even seek out the old well house and peer through the barred door. Okay, I’m using it as an excuse to have a rest, but it’s interesting stuff. Breath and vision returned, next is the steady cruise (read relentless slog) along the top of Pearoyd Bank, before a sharp left throws me down a swoopy rollercoaster of a hill towards Underbank. Another sharp left beneath the bypass and I notice the Silver Fox looks depressingly shut. Shame, I could just do with a pint. A few minutes later I’m battling traffic on a bustling Stocksbridge High Street. Despite needing an energy boost I somehow manage to fight the urge to buy thirty sausage rolls from Crawshaws, and settle instead for a disgusting energy sachet thing from my jersey pocket. At Deepcar I fight the twin pronged urge to retire early at the King & Miller and the Royal Oak. Instead a sharp right points me up Carr Road. This is the first of the named climbs on the route, known as the Cote de Deepcar. I grind my sorry, feeble way up this seemingly relentless gradient until I reach the rather lovely Bolsterstone. Ever the hero I resist the temptation to retire early at the Castle, and swoop my way straight back down the other side of the hill to Broomhead Reservoir and the foot of the next named climb, the Cote de Wigtwizzle. I’m grateful for the glass smooth tarmac on this stretch, but it’s still a dreadful slog that seems to gain severity the closer to the top you get. Eventually I join Mortimer Road where I immediately and rather annoyingly lose all the height I’ve just gained by plummeting straight back down into the valley I’d

climbed out of minutes before. The Cote de Ewden Height stands in front of me. A more unwelcoming sight I cannot at this point imagine. It’s horrible. Just downright nasty, right from the off. At the bottom a tight turn over a narrow, stone walled, gravel strewn bridge stifles any attempt at a run-up. Immediately after awaits a 180 degree switchback around which the tarmac is, I’m sure any spirit level would agree, entirely vertical. This opening salvo is followed by another eighty or so tear and regret filled uphill miles. I reach the top on the verge of bursting, and collapse into the roadside bracken. My consciousness returns on what could be a few seconds, minutes or months later. I dig my bike from the undergrowth and wrestle my quivering carcass back into the saddle. The largely effortless freewheel down to Midhopestones gives me time to recompose myself. I pass Ye Old Mustard Pot, resisting the urge to retire early, and soldier on to the the Cote de Midhopestones. After an age waiting to cross a thunderous A616, I’m grunting my way up the last climb of the day. I get the impression this one is actually a little easier than the tortuous struggle out of Ewden Beck, but as I’m riding it almost immediately after Ewden Beck the damage to my withered body and tattered moral is already done. My progress here is laughable. It’d be faster for me to get off and push. It’s not helped by a rather patchy and unpleasant road surface. I really hope they’ve ironed that out come race day. When I reach the crossroads at the top I’m light headed, entirely miserable and thinking of all the more enjoyable things I could have done with my morning. Cleaned the gutters, scrubbed the moss off the patio with a toothbrush, had a nettle bath. Anything must be better than this. I wobble back along the hilltop and coast down to Underbank, before a sedate and downtrodden trudge brings me back along Stocksbridge High Street. A shambolic two hours off the TdY pace, I turn down into Fox Valley and wobble along the car park. Starving hungry, dehydrated and with every muscle on the verge of cramp, I briefly consider selling the bike to the nearest shopper and buying a dartboard from Poundland. But I know I’ll need it next week. I’ll do it again next week, and the week after. With roads and hills and views like these, it’d be rude not to.

Young artists inspire land art to celebrate Yorkshire’s biggest bike race TWO budding artists from a north Sheffield school have had their eye catching designs created into stunning land art ready for this weekend’s Tour de Yorkshire which finishes at Fox Valley on Sunday. The owners of Fox Valley, Dransfield Properties Ltd, organised a competition to create some stunning pieces of land art to line the route which will be watched across the world when the sporting event is televised. Hundreds of entries were submitted but the two winners were Isobelle McGrail, aged 11 and Archie Eratt, aged 10, both from Deepcar St John’s Junior School who came up with designs which have now been created in two locations along
the route by land artists from Fields of Vision.
of the cycling world focus on Sunday’s finish.
Archie designed a beautiful umbrella in the Tour de Yorkshire colours of yellow and blue – he chose the umbrella design in tribute to Samuel Fox who developed the paragon frame umbrella in Stocksbridge in the 1850s.
The pupils were given pictures of the artwork as well as vouchers for winning the competition. Stocksbridge Golf Club also gave them both a club membership.
His design can be spotted on the 14th green of Stocksbridge Golf Club which runs alongside the Tour de Yorkshire route as it climbs up to Bolsterstone. Isobelle chose a fox on a bike for her design which can now been seen on the banking at Underbank Reservoir in Stocksbridge. Both pieces should be seen by millions of viewers in 178 countries when the eyes
Head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, said: “We had loads of really lovely entries but Isobelle and Archie’s designs both really stood out and I’m sure everyone who spots them on Sunday will agree that they’ve done a great job. “We’d like to thank everyone at Stocksbridge Golf Club as well as the farm who graze their sheep at Underbank for helping us get these amazing installations put into place so quickly in time the weekend.”
SPECTATORS URGED TO PLAN AHEAD FOR TOUR DETAILS of upcoming traffic and travel changes have been released, as the region gears up to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race for the third time. Stage Three of the Tour de Yorkshire is due to ride through South Yorkshire on Sunday 30 April, starting in Crow Edge before taking in Millhouse Green, Thurlstone, Penistone, Oxspring, Thurgoland, Wortley, Green Moor, Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Bolsterstone, Wigtwizzle, and Midhopestones, finishing at Fox Valley in Sheffield. Residents and businesses in Sheffield and Barnsley are being encouraged to plan race day journeys in advance, as road closures for the race will result in changes to some bus services. Road closures are needed to allow the route to be prepared, infrastructure to be put in place, the Tour’s vehicles and cyclists to pass through
the stage, and the safe dispersal of spectators and infrastructure after the race. To help customers plan their race day journey, Travel South Yorkshire has created a dedicated webpage for the event, which includes details of road closures across the region, timetables of affected bus services and ways to keep up to date with the latest travel news, at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tour-de-yorkshire.
SPEED YOUR JOURNEY AS the riders reach Bolsterstone after a testing long climb, Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir plan to greet them with Verdi’s ‘Speed Your Journey’. The choir, Deepcar Brass Band and young singers from Stocksbridge Junior School will keep the crowds in the village entertained throughout the afternoon.
Spectators planning on taking their bike on the train should check with the train operating company beforehand as capacity for bicycles in limited. Unfortunately cycles are not permitted on South Yorkshire’s buses and trams.
The evening before, a Tour de Yorkshire concert will be held at St Mary’s Bolsterstone at 7pm with Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, Deepcar Brass Band and special guests Deepcar Junior School Choir.
More travel information on the event can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/tourde-yorkshire Live public transport service updates will be available on 30 April on Twitter @TSYalerts
Tickets are available from Stocksbridge Keys (next to Crawshaws) or from info@ bolsterstonemvc.co.uk or on 07941412915.
HIGH SCHOOL OPENING TO ALLEVIATE PARKING
STOCKSBRIDGE High School is fully entering into the spirit of the Tour de Yorkshire.
High School. Proceeds from the parking will go towards the Cycling Festival.
In addition to hosting a free Cycling Festival for children on Sunday April 30 from 10.30am to 1pm, the school will be manning the car park to offer visitors to the area the ability to park their cars off-road.
Alistair Gittner, Deputy Head at the High School added: “It is hoped that the Cycling Festival this Sunday will become an annual feature at the High School and that a family cycling club will be created and developed at the school.
“We are conscious that residents around the school may well get inundated by visitors parking on the roads as it is so close to the race route. Hence we will be opening the car park (£5 per car) from 7am under supervision and relieving the pressure on roads around the area,” commented Yuri Matischen, a Governor of the
“The School hopes to work together with Penistone Cycling CIC and the Links Schools Sports Partnership to inspire more families and children to get active through safe cycling. I’d love to see as many families as possible this Sunday at the Festival to help kick-start the Club.”

Losing start for Stocksbridge cricket first team Stocksbridge 1st XI 90 all out. Hallam 3rd XI 147 all out (Callum Haywood 4-20). Stocksbridge lose by 57 runs The cricket season was upon us and under new captaincy Stocksbridge’s first XI took on Hallam thirds at a sunny Bracken Moor. New captain Pete Broomhead won his first toss and elected to field first. With the fielding and bowling plans in place, the 1st started the game off in a positive manner. Jake Vickers and Jim Tomlinson both struck early to remove both Hallam openers leaving the score on 16-2. The first XI had a spring in their step and set a great standard in the field not giving much away to the Hallam batters. Hallam had to dig in and a third wicket partnership of 79 gave them some momentum in the innings. Captain Pete Broomhead introduced Callum Haywood into the attack and the innings began to swing back in the 1st’s favour. Haywood hit his spot straight away picking up a wicket in his first over and then another three in his second over.
Haywood finished with figures of 4-20 from his five overs to reduce Hallam to 147 all out. The 1st’s opened the batting with Jamie Newton and Ant Siddall hoping for a positive start, however Newton was removed in the second over. The 1st’s needed to dig in and stay patient however the wickets begin to fall quickly. At 35-5 the game began to drift away and the firsts needed a special innings to pull the game back. Dave Smith, on his return to the side, gave some resilience scoring 33 before being caught out. The 1st’s couldn’t find the key partnership and ended on 90 all out, frustrated and disappointed with their effort with the bat. It was a frustrating defeat in the first round of the cup, however many positives to take into the next game for this young and upcoming side. The first XI entertain Hallam once again in the league next Saturday, hoping to turn Saturday’s result around.

Steels gear up for play-offs Stocksbridge PS 1 – 1 Bedworth MANAGER Chris Hilton rested many of his squad for the final league game of the season, ahead of their play-off semi final.
Steels were pegged back by the visitors in the 34th minute who also had Cross sent off shortly before the interval.
The 1-1 draw at home to Bedworth was in effect a dead-rubber with Steels already guaranteed play-off place after a run of eight consecutive victories saw them climb from the bottom half of the table up to fourth.
Steels play-off semi-final takes place on Tuesday April 25 with Steels travelling to Spalding.
Debuts were handed to goalkeeper Jordan Greaves and midfielder Aidan Salmons in an entertaining draw which saw the visitors reduced to ten men.
Stocksbridge beat Spalding 3-2 earlier in the season before the 2-0 victory at Bracken Moor last month. If Steels carry on their amazing run of form they will face either Witton Albion or AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the play-off final on Wednesday May 3.
Two former Steels juniors, Ben Rhodes and Brodie Lichfield, combined for Lichfield to open the scoring early-on.
