A RECORD one million fans turned out to watch the epic finale to the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire which saw Serge Pauwels claim the stage and overall victory at the finish in Fox Valley on Sunday. Not since the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ has Yorkshire experienced such a huge figure on a single day of racing, and that bumper crowd on Sunday helped ensure the third edition was officially the biggest one yet with overall attendances rising from two million to 2.2 million year on year.
The tour rolled through Penistone and Stocksbridge, with many other surrounding areas also taken in. Entire communities turned out on the roadside to witness the peloton pass though as they traversed the 194.5km route from Bradford to Fox Valley, Sheffield, and each of the day’s eight categorised climbs were also packed with masses of cheering, colourful and enthusiastic fans. The parcours was also lined with incredible, eye-catching land art as pictures of Yorkshire were beamed to a record 180 countries globally.

Spectators were treated to exciting action as well with Pauwels breaking clear on the tough concluding loop and he was joined by Dimension Data team-mate Omar Fraile before the race concluded in Stocksbridge.
Thousands of people watched the dramatic finish from the Fox Valley in north Sheffield. Earlier in the day more than 4,000 cyclists took part in the amateur sportive which started and finished at Fox Valley.
The duo then pressed home their advantage with Pauwels leading Fraile over the finish line to seal the biggest victory of his career and a one-two for his team who also topped the Doncaster Sheffield Airport and FlyBe Team Classification. Jonathan Hivert (Direct Énergie) rounded out the podium six seconds later.
Local business owners on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge were out at 8am the following morning to help with the mammoth litter-picking task. Full information on the Tour de Yorkshire and Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire can be found at www.letour.yorkshire.com

Join the Tour de Wharncliffe Heath WHARNCLIFFE Heathland Trust are running a tour of the local nature reserve on Sunday May 7 to explain what’s happening and why. People attending will learn about the connections between birch bashing, Shetland sheep and nightjars. The tour will be led by trustees of the Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust who manage the area in collaboration with the Forestry Commission to encourage species of plant and animals which thrive in the heathland and woodland habitats. Thousands of hectares of heathlands have been lost over the last few decades and the Wharncliffe site is one of the largest areas remaining in the Sheffield area.
Information will be provided on the management of the site and recent changes. It is hoped that those attending may also catch a sight of some of the species the reserve exists to conserve such as tree pipits and tiger beetles. Meet at the River Don bridge on Station Road, Deepcar, S36 2SQ, at 11am on Sunday May 7 if you want to join the tour. Wear stout footwear and bring along some water proof clothing and binoculars if you have them. The tour is due to be completed by 2.30pm. of people drown each year in the UK and places like rivers, lakes or flooded quarries are completely unsuitable for swimming as they hide a number of hidden dangers.”
To support Drowning Prevention Week, the specialist water rescue team from Aston Park attended Underbank Reservoir last week. Crowds gathered at the open water sports centre to watch the firefighters demonstrate a general boat rescue as well as various techniques such as floating walkways and line bagging.
Darren Lynch, Regional Raw Water Manager at Yorkshire Water said, “Reservoirs may look tempting to take a swim in but they can be killers and today’s practice rescue will hopefully raise awareness of these risks amongst young people.

“Cold water shock can lead to hyperventilation, increased blood pressure, breathing difficulties and heart attacks plus water temperatures remain just as cold in summer as in winter.”
All day every day
The purpose of this demonstration was to highlight the dangers associated with open water, especially as Summer approaches. Around 400 people needlessly drown in the UK every year and thousands more suffer injury, some life changing, through near-drowning experiences. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue works closely with communities to educate them of the dangers surrounding open waters - a key part of their prevention work. Area Manager Steve Helps, Head of Prevention and Protection at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We regularly receive 999 calls in the summer about people getting into difficulty in water, so it’s only a matter of time before someone’s safety is really put at risk unless people listen to our advice. “It can be tempting to cool off in the summer months, but stick to a swimming pool. Based on the hit 1980s movie starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels tells the story of two conmen who fight for the fortune and affections of an American soap heiress in the con of their lives. Marie Mason from Deepcar is chair of the group and told Look Local: "Southey is very much a society that leads the way in local theatre. It was the first to perform at the Montgomery Theatre and the first in South Yorkshire to perform hit shows such as 'Annie' and 'Hello Dolly’.

Matthew Gladstone, Executive Director for Place said: “The rugby club wants to keep growing so that more people can get involved with sport in the local area. “This funding is great news for the club as it will help to improve and expand facilities as well as supporting the council’s Playing Pitch strategy to provide good facilities across Barnsley.”
Section 106 funding is money that developers of larger sites pay to the council to reduce the impact of the development. Developers sign an S106 agreement as part of their planning permission. This is a legal document that specifies what the money is spent on and where. The money can be spent on projects such as improving community facilities, providing affordable housing and improving landscaping.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Your Letters Shot cat
I read with dismay your recent article on Clyde who had been shot with an air rifle 5 times. Unfortunately cruelty to animals in our area seems to have become a frequent problem, not only by the shooting of pets but also poisoning.
Further to your article on April 6 2017 regarding cats being shot in the Garden City area of Stocksbridge, I am writing to warn pet owners in the Cross Lane area of the village that we too have an air rifle pest in our midst.
Our nine month old kitten was poisoned last month (the vet suggested anti-freeze) and unfortunately had to be put to sleep. He was extremely poorly for a week and spent two days at the vets. He suffered terribly and was in a great deal of pain, and of course we were devastated.
Following a recent visit to the vet when my cat needed an X-Ray it was discovered that she had an airgun pellet embedded in her side.
This did not happen by accident, and as my cat is not a wanderer the only conclusion I can come to is I have since learnt that this was not unfortunately that she was deliberately shot close to home. an accident or isolated case and that lots of cats have This is not acceptable behaviour. Please stop been poisoned, especially around the Smithy Moor terrorising our pets! area of Stocksbridge. I believe the RSPCA have been informed and are investigating the issue.

One of the first jobs of wedding planning – and arguably the most important job – will be looking at wedding venues. That’s why it’s important to ask these questions to venues when you’re on the search… Take your time when you look for venues. You want to get the place you love for the best price, which sounds a lot easier than it actually is. When you visit the hotels, fields, churches and castles, do it with your partner by your side, and make sure you’re happy you’ll get a good service. These mustask questions will put you on the right track. How many people accommodate?
does
this
venue
You need to find out how many people your venue can accommodate. The venue will be one of the first things you organise, and wedding plans change constantly, so even if you know you’re having a small number of guests, ask this question. It might only accommodate for 20 and you want 80. Ask if you can change the number of people attending nearer the date too; you don’t know how many of your guests will be able to make it after all. What are the full costs/extra fees? Unfortunately, many venues have hidden costs that you really need to be aware of. Ask about the rental fee, cancellation policy, the payment plan, overtime fee and everything else you feel they might charge you for. This avoids any nasty surprises and gets all the awkward questions out of the way. Even marquee hire companies have hidden costs. Do you offer catering? You may have already arranged for a wedding caterer, but it’s still worth checking if the venue do. It may be a lot cheaper or better quality. It’s good
to keep your options open. Remember to ask about hidden fees here too! Some venues have a ‘corkage’ fee if you bring your own alcohol. If you hire your own caterers, ask if there are kitchen facilities available – if caterers have to bring in their own refrigerators and ovens, they might charge extra. What dates are available? If you have your heart set on a particular date and your venue is available on that day, still ask this question. You might discover they’re available on a bank holiday weekend or the price is considerably better on a different day. Weigh up all your options. Consider your guests when choosing a date. Do you have a list of suppliers? Sometimes venues will have a list of ‘preferred’ or ‘recommended’ suppliers. It’s important for your suppliers to work well together so it might be worth referring to this as much as possible. Also, if your venue recommends them, they are probably good suppliers to use. Trust your venue. They’ve hosted a lot of weddings. Can we setup the day before? This is a question your suppliers may ask you. Find out when you first book with your venue, and plan your day logically in your head. Ask them about how the whole process works with them. If you’re planning on bringing a lot of decoration, ask if you can set up the day before. If you’re happy with their answers to the above questions, you love the look and style of the venue and it’s within your budget, book it! After you’ve booked your venue, you can enjoy fun stuff like cake tasting, dress fittings and hen do planning. This is just an easy guide for you to follow to make sure you’re asking the right questions. Article courtesy of www.ukbrideblog.co.uk

GARETH Cooke continued his amazing run of form to win the prestigious Milton Keynes marathon at the weekend.
This race has a special place in Cooke’s heart, as it is where he began his running journey back in 2013 with a time of just over four hours. His commitment to training has seen him reduce this time to 2:40.06, which was also good enough to break his own recently-set club senior marathon record. Cooke took the lead in the latter stages of the race with a well-paced run, competing in his trademark blue t-shirt. Scott Hinchcliffe continued his dominance of the South Yorkshire Road League, winning his third race in a row at Brodsworth, near Doncaster in a time of 26.41. Gareth Cooke, Lesley Latchem, Andrea Henson, David Needham and Shaun Dimelow also remained in contention for category awards with fine runs. The senior men’s team lies just behind Totley in second place overall
Six club members completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Race a fell race in Horton in Ribblesdale.which covers 23 miles including an ascent of Pen-y-Gent. First back was Phil Hinchliffe in 3:51.10.
The race was also completed by Jon Waller, Tom Randall, Robin Clough, Jim Bell and Peter Knight. Five club members completed the Cake Race over 9.9 miles and 1,699 ft of climb-
ing in the hills above Marsden. First back was Ian Charlesworth in the time of 1:23.22, The race was also completed by Brent Lindsay, Paul Fryers, Nick Whittingham and Lee Bridgewater.
Wheelers begin club event calendar
Greg Godley 1st on handicap © Mossienet Photography BIRDWELL Wheelers season of club events started last week with the first of four five-mile time trials on a sporting course from Thurgoland to Hoylandswaine roundabout and back. Five Wheelers and six visitors braved the bitterly cold weather. The first Wheeler home was Dan Taylor in 13.40 and Trevor Mayne was second in 14.27. The first two on handicap were Greg Godley in 11.22 and Austin Watson in 12.12. The second round takes place on Tuesday over the same course. The previous weekend Dan Taylor rode in the Otley 25-mile time trial on the old A1 at Boroughbridge. His time of 57.55 placed him 17th in a strong field of 70 riders.
Also that weekend Paul Heggie rode in the Ogmore Valley Wheelers 25-mile time trial at Hirwaun in South Wales. His time of 57.52 only placed him 84th but was good enough for a new personal best at the distance, also setting a new club age record. Saturday saw Trevor Mayne and Dave Scargill ride in the LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists) Derek Smith Memorial Road Race on an undulating course at Halifax. Scargill finished in 3rd place in his age group while Mayne finished 10th in his. Sunday’s club run saw Dave Hudson, Dave Scargill, Phil Adams, Roger Bacon, Neil Addy and Rob Parkes ride a 90-mile loop to Naburn and back. Stocksbridge leave it late to take revenge on Hallam in season opener Hallam 187-9 (Callum Haywood 3-43)
Ollie Warren taking a good catch Second XI cruised to victory on their return to on the boundary. Division Four
Stocksbridge 188-6 (Ben Cherry 69 & Oliver Warren 60)
With Hallam posting a bigger total then last week, Stocksbridge knew they faced a tough chase if they were to get the league campaign off to a good start. Warren and Siddall opened the batting however didn’t get off to the best start as Siddall was bowled for five.
After a disappointing loss last week against Hallam in the cup, Hallam once again visited Bracken Moor for the opening game of the league season. Once again, captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and once again decided to bowl first. Stocksbridge got off to a good start with Jake Vickers picking up an early wicket in his second over.
Sheffield Civil Service 124 all out (David Codd 3-22) Following last year’s relegation, the second XI got off to the perfect start with a 113 run victory over Sheffield Civil Service. Stocksbridge reached 237 mainly thanks to a superb 140 run opening partnership between one of our juniors, 16 year old Elliot Freeman, who scored his maiden half century as he made his way to a superb 78 and David Codd who also made a half century with 55. Codd was also the pick of the bowlers picking up three wickets as Civil Service were dismissed for 124.

Brave Steels defeated in extra time Spalding United 3 – 2 Stocksbridge Park Steels
By James Grayson www.nonleagueyorkshire.com BRAVE Stocksbridge Park Steels were defeated in the second half of extratime in their epic play-offs semi-finals at Spalding United. The defeat brought the curtain on another fantastic season which has also seen the Steels reach the first round of the FA Trophy. The Steels fought back twice to force the additional 30 minutes, but were ultimately defeated by Jonny Lockie’s 106th strike. Stocksbridge initally fell behind on the stroke of half-time through a Matthew Varley penalty. They cancelled that out within two minutes of the second half starting as Richard Stirrup converted Joe Lumsden’s cross. Spalding regaiend the lead on the hour mark – Lee Beeson netting. Extra-time was forced by their key man Harrison Biggins who struck home a free kick – unfortunately a dream winner wasn’t to be. Spalding will visit Witton Albion in the final. On a more positive note, Harrison Biggins has been named Non League Yorkshire’s 2016/17 player of the year. The Steels midfielder won the vote which was sponsored by Crawford HR. He wins a new trophy along with £100 in cash. Biggins has had a magnificent season, contributing a double figure goal tally to aid Stocksbridge’s successful bid to reach the play-offs.

Biggins fought off competition from second placed Hall Road Rangers captain Ash Dexter and third-placed talented Hemsworth Miners Welfare left-winger Richard Collier to win the award.
