Stocksbridge man’s Hockey for Heroes challenge A STOCKSBRIDGE man is taking part in a gruelling challenge to raise money for Help for Heroes. Nick Fletcher is taking part in 10-day walk from Cardiff to London, playing 30 games of hockey on the way. As if that weren’t enough, Nick and the rest of the team will also be carrying a quadriplegic man on a stretcher as they walk. Nick, 26, wanted to help the charity because he has a lot of friends and family in the armed forces. His brother was in the RAF for nine years and he still has friends involved. He told Look Local: “I
got into this team through hockey. I went to play in a tournament four years ago and met the founders of Hockey for Heroes, they were very passionate about it during a hectic week of hockey and it was impossible to not be inspired. I took part in a challenge a couple of years ago and despite it being gruelling, it was a no-brainer to get involved again.”
Nick says that staying mentally aware and strong is the most difficult part. He said: “This one is a step up, a lot of it is mentally tough. It’s ten days on road, your body knackered and we’re playing a decent level of hockey. Then there are the traffic factors and the safety of Dom, which is our primary concern. We have to be switched on.”
The challenges have got progressively more difficult with the first one being six years ago with a team playing over 20 games of hockey in 11 days.
On May 26, the Hockey for Heroes team will march from Sophia Gardens in Cardiff to the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London.
Then, two years ago, came the first one that Nick was involved with – 33 games over 10 days and climbing three peaks.
Injured ex-Royal Marine Dom Lovett will be on the stretcher. If Dom is unable to take part at any point, the team will still carry the stretcher with
his equivalent weight on. Along the route, various hockey clubs will play host to them. The 2017 tour is going to be the biggest tour to date requiring exceptional levels of stamina, strength and mental determination to complete and the squad have been assembled at Bisham to discuss all aspects of the tour. They hope to raise over £50,000. There are a number of ways you can sponsor the team, you can visit Nick’s Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nicholas-fletcher1 or text NFOP66 and the amount you’d like to donate to 70070.
12 years for sex offender ISMAEL Admassu, 19, of Deer Park Road in Stannington appeared at Sheffield Crown court on Friday May 12 where he was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to four sex offences, four robberies and a wounding. Admassu was arrested and charged with the offences in October 2016 following reports that he had sexually assaulted and physically attacked four women, before stealing money and valuables form them. PC Lucy Garside, who investigated the incidents, said: “Admassu has been punished for his despicable actions, and the threat he poses to others has been removed from the community.

“An investigation was quickly launched after we received reports that a man had attacked and threatened four young women in Sheffield city centre last October. “Admassu used violence to intimidate and prey on his victims for personal gain. I would like to thank the brave women involved for reporting the traumatic incidents so quickly, giving the attending officers opportunity to arrest the suspect nearby with the stolen property still on him. “The arresting officer, PC Boldero, knew the suspect was armed with a weapon and still bravely gave chase to apprehend him.” Admassu has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.

Owners of 20 husky dogs fined again over noise A COUPLE has been fined more than £2,400 for ignoring a noise abatement notice issued by Sheffield City Council’s environmental protection service - for the second time.

Stephen and Lynette Hinchliffe, of Armitage Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty and on Tuesday May 9 and were fined ÂŁ750 each, with costs of ÂŁ800 being awarded to the Council as well as a victim surcharge of ÂŁ150, making a total of ÂŁ2,450.
At Barkers of Sheffield
The couple kept 20 Siberian huskies at their semi-detached house in Deepcar. Neighbours complained about the noise from the dogs, which howled persistently.

Neighbours said the noise created a disturbance and prevented them from sleeping. However, the noise continued to be a problem.

In October 2016 a recording device was installed at a neighbour’s property and 18 breaches were recorded. The conviction follows a previous conviction for the same offence in May 2016, when the couple were also fined £2,450. At that time the couple pleaded not guilty, but the court found in the council’s favour.

Council officers will try and resolve noise complaints by first providing help and advice. If this does not resolve the problem, then there are legal powers the council can use to try and achieve a resolution. If an abatement notice is breached without a reasonable excuse, then the matter may go to court.

A spokesman for Sheffield City Council, said: “We are very pleased with this result. The financial penalty reflects the misery of the neighbours caught up in this issue. We are disappointed that Mr and Mrs Hinchliffe have again breached the abatement notice after their conviction last year. We will be seeking legal advice about other sanctions which may apply.
“We hope that this action serves as a warning to others.

No soggy bottoms in Deepcar baking competition
Photo of the winners taken by Paul Law
LOCALS proved that there are no soggy bottoms in Deepcar at the first ever Great St John’s Bake-Off on Saturday. Over 90 people gathered at St John’s Church to taste the amazing, delicious bakes created by children from St John’s School and local adults.
Decorated with a ‘summer’ theme, there were cakes baked in individual plant pots to look like summer plants and cacti in full bloom, tray bakes festooned with tiny parasols, delicious chocolate cream cakes stuffed with fresh strawberries, a Victoria sponge resplendent with a beach scene, tasty fruit cakes and mountains of scones.
Bake-Off judge Anne Whitehead commented: “The quality of the baking and decorating was truly stunning. We were really impressed at the creativity of our community.”
The winning bakers were presented with commemorative Bake-Off spoons created by Cindy Law and the signed photo donated by Mary Berry was won by winning baker Elizabeth Johnson.
Prize winner Ruth Smith said: “I’ve never entered a baking competition before. My family will never believe I’ve won!”
One of the organisers, Elisabeth Coyne, said: “We were so excited at the number and quality of the cakes entered, and especially that so many children took
part. It was such a lovely day that we will definitely be organising a Bake-Off again next year. We want it to become an annual event for the whole community to look forward to!” Photos of the Bake-Off will soon be available on St John’s Facebook page and at www.saintjohns.co.uk

The Venue to host fundrasing gig LOCAL fundraiser Jim Darnill has organised an evening of music at The Venue in support of Dan and Calvin’s Kilimanjaro Challenge for Weston Park Cancer Charity. The concert, on Saturday May 20, will be opened with music from a local band with a new identity, Magenta Splatter, who will perform songs from the late, great, Elvis Presley. Although still to be confirmed, rumours on Facebook suggest that, as the event is for charity, band members have waived their usual insistence on a personal burger van for the evening. Classical singer Kathryn Mountain will follow with songs in the style of Katherine Jenkins. Kathryn is no
stranger to The Venue. The last time she performed there, the bar staff commented that not only could she match Ms Jenkins’ singing prowess, Kathryn would beat her hands down with the size of her postperformance bar bill. Next on the bill are regular covers band One Man Down. The band have recently increased their quota of 60s song renditions for a private function. Tracey, the band’s drummer, told Look Local: “The 60s gig was great, particularly as we all dressed in character. Rick is adopting more of an Eric Morecambe approach to his music, though, claiming he plays all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order.”
The evening will be drawn to a close by Jim’s own acoustic band, Cocklebread. Jim’s international renown has spread even further this year as he took his trusty travel guitar on holiday to Montenegro with him. With now a well-known and proven format, Cocklebread will be a conglomeration of all the evening’s acts, led by Jim, to sing a crowdpleasing mix of traditional upbeat folk and bluegrass songs. Doors at The Venue open at 7.30pm with entertainment starting at 8pm. Admission is £5 on the door and Elvis will leave the building when the bar closes.
Car and van owners warned after number of thefts OFFICERS from the Sheffield North East team are asking vehicle owners to take extra precautions to secure their cars and vans following a number of thefts over recent weeks. Through mid-April and into this month, a number of vans have been broken into and had items taken from them. Cars have also been targeted with registra-
tion plates being stolen and items on display in vehicles also being stolen. Inspector Richard Burgess, said: “Across the North East of Sheffield we have seen an increase in the number of vehicles being broken into and having items stolen. In particular, it would appear that people have been targeting work vans to take power tools. I’d advise people with work vans to remove tools overnight.
“There are other steps you can also take to protect your property and vehicle, a few of which I’ve listed below.
Keep your van keys safe while you are working, never leave them in your vehicle
Don’t leave valuables in your car and in particularly on show in your car Where possible park in well-lit areas and areas covered by CCTV if you can
If you do keep power tools in your van, security mark them so they are identifiable. You can do this using your postcode or house number for example, written in UV pen
Always lock your vehicle and fit additional locks or an alarm if you can
Make sure you have fully comprehensive insurance for your vehicle. Thieves
will often ‘smash and grab’ causing damage that can be expensive to repair and may mean your car or van is off the road for several days. “Work is ongoing to identify offenders and I’d encourage anyone who has information about any recent theft from a vehicle to contact us via 101.” For further crime prevention advice, please visit southyorks.police.uk

ON Sunday April 30, Grenoside 14th Scouts had their white box trailer stolen from the locked and gated grounds of their headquarters on Salt Box Lane, Grenoside. This was taken in broad daylight and was caught on CCTV at 10.41am. The trailer was pulled out on to the front of the HQ before then – it was seen on the forecourt at around 8am. The 4x4 car that towed it away was at HQ just before 9am and then returned later. It is a large white, twin axle box trailer with a distinctive wooden split rear door with the top half hinging up and the right rear opens sideways. It has ‘Refreshments’ written down the side but partly covered by white plastic.

“The Cambridge Weight Plan worked for me, it could work for you too” CAMBRIDGE Weight Plan has been used successfully across the world for more than 30 years and its independent consultants offer oneto-one support and advice to people during their weight loss journey.
Plan has helped me not only lose the weight, but re-educate myself about food and thankfully I now have the skills and willpower to keep the weight off and now I don’t have to hide away anymore. I love my life.”
Independent Cambridge Weight Plan consultant, Debbie Wilson, of Sheffield, is on a mission to help fight obesity after losing a whopping seven stones and eight dress sizes herself on the weight loss programme.
“I feel so strongly about helping others to lose weight and stay on track that I have resigned from my job to make this a full-time focus.
And she is so passionate about CWP, she has ditched her full-time job as an Operations manager in the wholesale drinks industry to help others lose weight. Debbie said: “I started on Cambridge Weight Plan last year and followed Step Two of its programme. I didn’t want to go initially but I knew I needed to do something positive and CWP was the most positive step I have ever made.” Debbie admits she had a terrible relationship with food and would over-eat continually. “My diet was terrible,” she admitted. “I could eat and eat it was so destructive. Yet nobody ever saw me eat, I was a typical secret eater. Everyone regarded me as the happy, funny person, but inside I was so miserable and so very unhappy and slowly I started to cut myself off from friends and became a master of excuses as to why I couldn’t attend a party or event. I literally hid away for years.” Debbie had dieted in the past and at her biggest was nearly 22 stone. “I knew I had to break the cycle and had lost 10 stone many years before, but Cambridge Weight
“I love the fact this is one to one so people get the support and focus they need because we understand everyone is different and everyone’s journey and reasons for wanting to lose weight are very different. But I promise, once you start on CWP, you won’t ever look back. “It’s now my turn to pay it forward but this is a two-way street because by me helping other people lose weight, it also keeps me keep focussed and on track. Life is there to be enjoyed but there are some worrying statistics which show that by 2020, eight out of 10 women and seven out of 10 men in the UK will be obese. I can’t change these stats on my own, however I can certainly do my bit to help people in the area I live.” Saturday May 20 marks European Obesity Day. Don’t become one of the statistics. For more information about losing weight with Cambridge Weight Plan, call or message Debbie Wilson on 07720949114 or email debbie. wilson007@live.co.uk You can read more about Debbie’s journey on her webpage at www.cambridgeweighplan.com/ DebbieWilson

A spokesperson for the group told Look Local: “This trailer was used to transport equipment to camps and fundraising events. “We now have to find alternative transport which could add extra cost to the camps for the young people attending these events. DEEPCAR VILLAGE HALL OPEN DAY DEEPCAR Village Hall is opening its doors to the public on Saturday May 20 from 4pm to 8pm. Two years ago, a £7,000 grant from Veolia was awarded to the centre and it now has a new metal roof, ceilings, boiler and cooker. The hall has been open for 43 years and was ready for a refurbishment. The committee that manage the building are hoping plenty of visitors will come and see what it has to offer. Deepcar Brass Band will play, as will Graham Lindley. Dennis Pindar, who was instrumental in opening the hall, will speak on the history of the site. Local author Graham Shepherd will present monologues and a talk. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be available and all are welcome.

A YOUNG girl from Chapeltown is impressing sport coaches with her gymnastic talents having never tried the sport before. Amelia Davison, six, was one of 10 youngsters to win SIV’s ‘Search for a Star’ competition after wowing judges with her entry video. The Windmill Hill pupil is now enjoying a year’s free coaching at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, where she is familiarising herself with the gymnastics equipment.
Aside from gymnastics, Amelia also takes part in street dance, swimming, karate and musical theatre. Amelia’s mum, Katy, said: “Amelia has always harboured a natural talent for sport and performance so it seemed only right for her to enter the ‘Search for a Star’ competition. “She absolutely loves watching gymnastics on the telly, but it’s not something she’d ever tried before. However, she’s
very flexible and this obviously shone through in her entry video. “’The Search for a Star’ competition is a fantastic idea and I am so proud of Amelia for winning the gymnastics award. “The classes at Hillsborough Leisure Centre are brilliant and Amelia has taken to it like a duck to water. “Of all the activities that Amelia takes part in, gymnastics is definitely her favourite. I’d encourage any parent to take their kids along – they’ll love it!”
GUNNER M V Rodgers from Stocksbridge was killed on August 2 1917 aged 24. On September 21 at Penistone War Memorial there is a commemorative service for the Battles of Passchendaele to remember the 14 local casualties who lost their lives. One of these men was M V Rodgers who parents lived in the Underbank area. Local man Joe Pinguey, who is organising the service, is asking if he has any other local family. If you know someone, get in touch with Look Local.

I write through your column to thank Angela Smith for her ‘Re-elect Angela Smith’ leaflet that I have received through my letter box today listing all her “achievements”. Sadly Mrs Smith has failed to recollect her biggest “achievement” in Stocksbridge which was voting to close our local sports centre! I am sure local people will remember this on poling day.

Austerity Dear Editor, Your correspondent Mr Michael Parker (letters 11th May) raises some reasonable issues which, as a result of tightly focusing on the subject of austerity, neglects to mention a number of specific and general key points pertinent to the debate. It is, for example, a straightforward exercise available to anyone amongst the populace utilising only a minimal amount of gumption, a grasp of basic arithmetic and the honesty to accept the fact, to discover that the present Party of Government has borrowed more than every Labour Government combined (http://www.taxresearch. org.uk/Blog/2016/03/13/the-conservatives-havebeen-the-biggest-borrowers-over-the-last-70years/) mainly to bail out and support the small section of the population who finance the present Government. Pertinent facts which, for some odd reason, too many amongst the number of opposing political party’s seem content to once again hide under a bushel. Leaving one wondering why this might be so? Perhaps some of the party’s/parties may be singing from the same hymn sheet as the Government despite operating under different party labels? On Mr Parker’s general theme, which echoes Lord Hailsham’s point in his 1976 Dimbleby lecture about elected dictatorships, two recent trends require being dragged into the light for scrutiny by those who wish to be serious in their responsibilities as citizens. Firstly, it is a matter of record that the current Party of Government, or to be more precise The Executive Branch of Government, had to be dragged kicking and screaming through the courts late last year to enable Parliament to fulfill it’s function of holding the Excutive to account in the matter of the triggering of Article 50. Followed immediately by the current Executive signalling very clearly their intention to completely bypass Parliament in the inappropriately labelled process of repeal (The Great Repeal Bill) of over four decades of EU legislation incoporated into UK law by introducing a Henry VIII clause. Named for the king who forced the passing of the Statute of Proclamations 1539 empowering his decisions both to change and have the same force as legislative acts, such a clause enables government to repeal or amend primary legislation by means of a secondary act with limited or no further parliamentary scrutiny (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/ brexit/2016/11/30/rights-for-the-chop-how-ahenry-viii-clause-in-the-great-repeal-bill-willundermine-democracy/). Enacting such a clause in a Great Repeal Act will hand ministers an executioner’s axe to a range and breadth of law based on EU norms covering consumer protection rights, employment protection and rights at work, environmental protection and more with no Palimentary scrutiny. An interesting and revealing definition of the simplistic slogan about “taking back control” which is rammed down everyone’s throat by certain sections amongst us at every opportunity. The practical effect in terms of democratic accountability through our self proclaimed “Mother of Parliaments” is that the Executive, currently run in political terms by the Conservative and Unionist Party, is intent taking on the powers and control best described as “The Divine Rights of Kings” and effectively neutering Parliament. A feudal situation this country has not seen since the 16th century. A
Your Letters pertinent fact which should put to bed the current simplistic and nonsensical meme about being taken back to the 1970s. Secondly, it is revealing in its intent that the private company polling agency Yougov, whose CEO is a former Conservative Party candidate, conducted a selective poll in the week following the announcement of a General Election which asked respondents how strongly they agreed or disagreed with the following question: “The best way to run the country would be to have a strong leader who does not have to bother with Parliament or elections. Clearly signalling that someone with sufficient money is flying a kite here to determine the level of support for extending the powers of the Executive to bypass the need for a democratic Parliament which holds the feudal powers of The Crown to acount. In this context it seems relevent to take with more than a pinch of salt some of the plethora of literature currently dropping through our letter boxes. Literature which contains promises and commitments to the effect that candidates will hold the Government to account on one issue or another.

The headgear was a well loved part of our history which has been swept away without a care. I know the headgear wasn’t protected but was there any consultation with the council regarding the demolition? Can the developer rebuild the headgear in a safe area so that we can still use them as a symbol for our village. The headgear was not large and wouldn’t take much rebuilding even with new bricks if needs be but they were of massive importance to the village. Richard Hague

We know how important it is to preserve our green spaces and there are many brownfields sites that are better suited for housing development. The Liberal Democrats are aware of this but are intentionally stirring-up trouble.
have been categorised as “long term options – this is purely theoretical as in reality they are no option at all. These unsuitable areas are environmentally sensitive or constrained areas, such as Mortomley Park, and legally cannot be built on by developers. Simply put, housing development cannot happen on Mortomley Park as there are planning constraints preventing the land being suitable. Mortomley Park has been assessed as not suitable, not achievable and therefore a ‘long term option’ simply because technically it’s a flat site and could be developed if there was no policy constraint - but there is so, simply put, this cannot happen. Anything you may have heard otherwise is false. Your local Labour Party will never allow for the park to be built on by developers and will always ensure that strict planning restrictions are in place. The council have estimated what dwellings could theoretically be built but Mortomley Park is clearly marked as not suitable for development. Labour have pushed council officers to make sure that the next version of the assessment will remove the theoretical ‘long term option’ category for the avoidance of any doubt. Instead ‘longer term options’ will be more correctly categorised as no option at all – as they are unsuitable for development. Unlike the Lib Dems, who are happy to worry High Green residents rather than getting the facts right, we have checked the current information and Mortomley Park remains assessed as unsuitable. It will not be on the list of options for new housing development and it will not be put forward in the draft Local Plan looking at which areas will be built on to provide the homes our city needs. This has always been the case and it is outrageous of the Lib Dems to stir-up fear when they should know it isn’t true. Seemingly you can’t trust the Lib Dems to get their facts right or have the real interests of Sheffield residents at heart.
The developer on the corner of Hollin Busk Lane We’ve been here many times before - the Liberal and Cockshutt Lane, Deepcar has knocked down Democrats’ recklessly spread fear by either getting the mining headgear which was used as a symbol their facts wrong or by intentionally lying. Land Councillors Zoe Sykes & Adam Hurst of our village. at Mortomley Park was put forward, like many Also the cap of the mine was disturbed exposing the other places, to the council in 2014 by a third shaft leaving the site dangerous. The Coal Authority party for the Strategic Housing Land Availability had to come out Sunday morning to fence the area Assessment, which has been set up to ensure that Valley in Bloom update off quickly. The headgear may not have seemed we build the homes our city needs. The assessment much to people from outside of the area and to clearly states that it does not allocate land for developers but they were an iconic symbol showing housing development and does not make policy Valley in Bloom will be stripping out the winter our rich industrial past in the valley from mining decisions on which sites should be developed. It plants soon ready for the summer bedding. All the further adds that any sites considered ‘unsuitable’ winter pansies are free to a good home. and special steel production.

Having a perfumed garden in an excellent way of improving well-being and making your outside space feel even more special. Not often thought of as a container plant, but an excellent option for small gardens, is the ever popular scented rose.
ones, ensure that all the old soil is removed and replaced with fresh.
Roses are easy to grow and will thrive in most pots providing there is good drainage and they are watered regularly. All you need is a sunny location and enough room for a large container and you can transform a patio, terrace or balcony into a floral retreat full of colour and fragrance.
Laura Ford – a patio climber that has lots of small, double, deep yellow flowers and grows up to 3m high.
Choosing the right rose is important – compact varieties with a long flowering season grow well in containers – they just need a sturdy, good sized pot to live in full of good quality potting compost. Roses need regular feeding which will increase the amount of blooms they produce and will also improve their resistance to pests, although some roses will require spraying to combat aphids and mildew. Pruning is essential as it shapes the plant and helps control insects and disease and it’s also important to remove dead heads as this improves flowering over a longer period of time. You should re-pot every two to three years to refresh the soil and if your rose isn’t flower as much as it used to then transplant it to a larger container. If you are replacing old roses with new
The Royal Horticultural Society’s top five roses for containers are:
Magic Carpet – a groundcover variety that has pretty, wide, semi-double flowers in mauve, lilac and lavender with a light spicy scent. Nice Day – a patio climbing rose with gorgeously scented coral-pink flowers that bloom repeatedly throughout the summer and autumn and grows to 2m high. Robin Redbreast – a miniature rose with dark green foliage and bright red, single flowers with yellow centres that produces good rosehips in the autumn. Sweet Dream – a past Rose of the Year short, standard bushy rose that has apricot-peach flowers with masses of petals. For an instant rose garden that you can enjoy throughout the summer buy a selection of different sized pots, plant them with a varieties of roses and then place them together in a group. Simple but stunning.

Sit back and relax...
It’s summer! June is a lovely month to be in the garden. With the evenings getting longer and brighter you can use your garden or patio as a great extension to your home, and just sit back and relax. It’s at this time of year that lawns need to be mowed more frequently. Mow at least once a week and raise the mower blades when it’s very hot weather. Don’t mow when grass is wet or during a drought and don’t collect your clippings during dry spells as this helps conserve moisture. Keep watering throughout the summer unless there is a water shortage and repair bare patches with turf or re-seeding. This is also the month to ensure that all your plants are adequately fed, particularly those in baskets and tubs. Plants benefit from a regular feeding programme as they are growing vigorously and need their nutrition levels to be kept up. Slow release granules are a good idea for pots and baskets because they last for about six months and release food as it is required into the compost. Container gardens often provide an easy and instant makeover option for anyone looking to take advantage of the summer months by utilising some outside space. You can create
a colourful outside living area that will attract wildlife such as bees and butterflies by using inexpensive yet functional containers. It’s best if you use the same or similar colours for the pots and containers and use trailing plants with abandon. Letting plants fall over the side of the pots moves them into the background, hides any imperfections in your containers and puts the focus on the plants which is where it belongs. If you have inherited some tired looking pots from friends or family then plant some tall, dramatic plants to keep the eye from examining the containers too closely. Hollyhocks and cosmos are tall plants that can easily - and quickly - be grown from seed or bought as established plants.

Drama students tackle humour and loss SHEFFIELD College drama students will stage a performance that explores humour as well as loss in a production created by local playwright Laura Wade. Billed as an innovative and unusual interpretation of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Alice is set in Sheffield in 2010. This critically acclaimed play explores the rollercoaster of emotions experienced whilst overcoming the loss of a loved one, and originally premiered at the Crucible. Twentytwo students completing the BTEC Extended Diploma in Acting, which is equivalent to three A Levels, are involved in the show. Jo Beadle, Lecturer in Performing Arts, said: “The play combines humour and sadness. Our talented students have developed the professional skills to
bring alive the range of characters and emotions faced by Alice on her journey through life.” During Alice’s journey she encounters larger than life characters. They include a very human Cheshire cat, an eccentric mad hatter, a distraught duchess, and the king and queen of hearts who bear a striking resemblance to her mother and father. The show is being staged at The Sheffield College’s Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street, Hillsborough, on May 23, 24, 25 and 26 at 7.15pm. Some free matinee performances are also available on May 25 and 26. For tickets, email info@sheffcol.ac.uk or call 0114 2602600.
Fox Valley wins major regional award for regeneration DRANSFIELD Properties Ltd has won a prestigious regional award for regeneration for the £50 million Fox Valley development in Stocksbridge. The company was awarded the RICS Pro-Yorkshire Award in the regeneration category at a ceremony held in Leeds on Friday May 12 – the development was launched last year by Joanna Lumley OBE bringing a major investment and hundreds of new jobs to the area. The development has transformed a 28-acre former steelworks site in Stocksbridge north Sheffield into a stunning retail, office and leisure development which has created a new commercial heart for this part of South Yorkshire.
Fox Valley was one of four projects across the region to the shortlisted in the regeneration category alongside other developments in Sheffield and in Hill. The scheme was designed by Sheffield architects Dixon Dawson and the main contractor was Henry Boot Construction. The development team was presented with the award by TV presenter Melissa Porter and the project will now go through to the national finals of the RICS Awards alongside the other regional regeneration winners in a ceremony held in London in November. The announcement comes just a month after the eyes of the cycling world were on Fox Valley when the centre successfully hosted the finish of the
Tour de Yorkshire which saw record crowds enjoy the annual event.
project should have a great sense of pride in this achievement.
Dransfield Properties’ head office is based at Fox Valley – the company celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
“We first started working on plans for this site ten years ago – real and sustainable regeneration can take many years to get right and it is fantastic to see the positive change Fox Valley has had in the community since the centre opened last June.”
The company has won major industry awards for other developments including Penistone 1 in Penistone, Barnsley, Marshall’s Yard in Gainsborough and Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth, Northumberland. Managing Director at Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield, said: “We are extremely proud of what has been achieved at Fox Valley and it is fantastic to have the development recognised by our own industry - everyone who has been involved in the
Dransfield Properties has received an investment of £8,111,040 from the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007- 2013, which is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government to bring forward the Fox Valley project. Learning going beyond the school classroom NORMALLY, the bell rings at the end of the school day and children run out to make their way home. But not at Wharncliffe Side Primary School. It may be a small school but there are a large number of extra-curricular activities which pupils are eager to take part in. The school offers a wide variety of clubs to suit everyone. Pupils who enjoy sport can participate in football, girls’ football, gymnastics and athletics. These courses, which are taught by professionals coming into school, continue to be popular across the age range. For those pupils who would like to learn or develop a new skill, the teachers are also providing oppor-
tunities for the youngsters to do sewing, drama, problem-solving or singing. Learning doesn’t stop in the classroom and the teachers are looking to organise more clubs in the future to offer pupils a chance to try something different including fencing, golf and cycling. These clubs are a great way for pupils across the school to interact with each other, learn something new and have fun in the process. As one Y6 pupil described her experience of a club she recently attended: “I went to problem-solving club when I was in Year 3 and I found it exciting and challenging, so I wanted to come again. It’s also lots of fun.” Another problem-solver added: “I’d recommend it for anyone who wants a maths or geometry challenge.”

Tom Booth in full flight again TOP-BILLING for Birdwell Wheelers this week goes to 16-year-old Tom Booth who last Saturday in the Rossington Wheelers 10-mile open time trial at Hatfield Woodhouse finished first junior and 15th overall in a new course personal best of 23.29. In the same event Trevor Mayne finished eighth overall in 22.33. On the same day Paul Mason rode in the Drighlington BC 25 mile Open time trial at Dishforth and his time of 54.46 placed him 25th in a strong field of over 130 riders. Tuesday’s five-mile time trial at Thurgoland saw Anthony Bromley (Team SSLL) fastest for the second week running in 11.25 , just three seconds ahead of Andy Nichols (Team B38) and 11 seconds ahead of first Birdwell Wheeler Dan Taylor. On handicap Austin Watson was first with Allan Whittaker and Trevor Mayne close behind. Watson now leads the handicap competition with 28 points, three ahead of Philip Adams and six ahead of Trevor Mayne. Tom Booth in action. Photo by Rob Booth

Sunday’s club run saw Austin Watson, Phil Adams, Rob Parkes and Roger Bacon complete a windy 80 mile loop to Tadcaster averaging over 15 mph.
Sheffield Hawks U16 16–34 Milford Marlins U16 FOR 55 minutes of the match, Hawks equalled the Marlins pace and power. Injuries have taken a huge toll of the squad strength and with only twelve players on the pitch Hawks performed superbly for much of the match. Tries were swapped in the first half, the only difference a missed conversion for Hawks. Bailey Thompson scored the Hawks first, using raw pace and power after a simple, effective set of six. Jack Ryan had scored a trademark try through the centre
of the pitch despite the efforts of four Marlins defenders. All match they struggled to contain him and his offloads in contact kept many moves going. The second half was initially very close with Will Burns crossing after 10 minutes. This saw Hawks enter a period where they dominated the game. Oliver Brown showed real strength to get close on two occasions, Saul Hincliffe and Max Blackburn forced themselves through tackles at will, Robert Harden
organised and carried well in a scored as a result of tired legs and battered bodies in the last five minutes to put the Marlins team in a new position. more flattering light than they merited. Man of the match Pat Wakefield organised the line superbly, The 12 Hawks players worked themselves in to the Harry Scott started to break ground but need to execute better close to the line. through contact all over the pitch Marlins were a team that got away and this should and Hawks kept forcing errors have been a conclusive Hawks victory. from Marlins. Double victory for Stocksbridge cricket sides Stocksbridge first XI 69-2 Sheffield Civil Service 1st XI 67 all out Stocksbridge win by eight wickets STOCKSBRIDGE’S first XI entertained Sheffield Civil Service’s first string at Bracken Moor, looking to get back to winning ways. Following a disappointing defeat last weekend, captain Pete Broomhead once again won the toss and elected to bowl first. Stocksbridge continued to persist with the combination of Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers opening the bowling and it was Hibbert who struck first in the third over. With the score at 10-1 the opening pair bowled with pace and accuracy, making time at the crease very difficult for the Civil Service batsmen. Vickers took the second wicket removing the Civil Service captain caught behind, after good work from Dave Smith behind the stumps. With the wicket offering plenty to the bowlers, Stocksbridge were massively on top and Hibbert picked up his second wicket of the innings leaving Civil Service struggling at 14-3. Experienced heads Jim Tomlinson and Andy Hibbert came into the attack and the firsts continued to dominate the first innings. The wickets continued to fall as Tomlinson and Hibbert gave nothing away with the ball, at 35-5 Civil Service had a mountain to climb. Tomlinson picked up three wickets and Hibbert picked up two leaving the score at 58-8. Vickers
came back into the attack for Hibbert and finished the innings off in style. He picked up the last two wickets in his first over of his second spell, the second one a very well taken caught and bowled. Civil Service were bowled out for a disappointing 67, after a fine performance from the ball and in the field from the first. Stocksbridge opened the batting with Oliver Warren and captain Pete Broomhead and were hoping for a positive start to release some tension. Warren certainly did that by hitting the fourth ball of the innings into the gardens for a huge six. However, he was removed being bowled for 14 following a good delivery from the Civil Service opening bowler. In-form Ben Cherry came to the crease and he, along with Broomhead, batted with patience and positivity to move the 1st closer to victory. Cherry dispatched any bad delivery from the Civil Service bowlers while Broomhead put in a captains innings and anchored perfectly for the firsts. The pair put on 52, before Broomhead was removed with only six runs needed. Cherry went on to hit the winning runs, finishing on 33 not out giving Stocksbridge a resounding eight wicket victory and the full twenty points. A positive response for the local team who travel to University Staff in two weeks time, looking for back to back victories. Stocksbridge’s second team were away again at Warminster Rd to take on Sheffield University Staff second team. Uni Staff won the toss and elected to field and made some early in roads into
Stocksbridge top order by taking wickets of the top three for only 18 runs. As with last week’s match the innings needed to be rebuilt and a partnership of 70 between Jack Murfin and Chris Ogley took Stocksbridge just after drinks 88-3 then Jack Murfin was bowled for a near run a ball 43. Chris Ogley was then involved in a partnership of 40 with Ben Lyons and 80 with Tom Dobson to take the Stocksbridge innings to a great total of 230-7 with Chris Ogley 67 and Tom Dobson 46 batting well. The pick of Uni Staff bowlers was Patwardhan with figures of 12-2-40-3. Sheffield Uni Staff showed some early resitance and an early partnership between openers was broken by Adam Stubbs who then took another wicket with next ball but missed the opportunity of a hat trick. Mark Wingfield took a couple of wickets to keep the pressure on the home team with only Kerry showing any intent to score. Hostile bowling from Chris Thwaites and an accurate experienced spell from Les Harris took away any chance of Uni Staff chasing down the total. Stocksbridge regrouped and made a push for a complete victory in the last 10 overs with two more wickets for Mark Wingfield and Adam Stubbs, who continues to fulfill his potential, got them to the brink of victory. A clever bowling change with two overs to go brought Tom Dobson into the attack and the final wicket fell and a superb victory was secured. A special mention for Stocksbridge second team’s fantastic standards of fielding and the Stocksbridge attacks bowling figures.
