liTTleST BiG Race ReTURNS To GReNoSiDe THOUSANDS of people descended on Grenoside Woods on Saturday May 20 as former downhill mountain bike champion Steve Peat once again hosted his seventh Peaty’s Steel City Down Hill. Peat, from Chapeltown, is a former World Champion and is passionate about promoting mountain biking in his home town of Sheffield. Peaty’s Steel City Down Hill is organised and run by a dedicated group of volunteers who do it for the love of it and to raise money to build and maintain the trails around Sheffield. The city is a hub for mountain biking, with trails in Wharncliffe and Grenoside Woods, as well as dedicated centres at Parkwood Springs and Lady Cannings, Ringinglow. Peat has won all six of the events so far but this year saw a departure from that with him finishing sixth. Top place went to New Zealand rider Eddie Masters, with his best run being 1:13.033. Runner-up was Philip Atwill and third was Craig Evans. Tracy Moseley won the women’s category in 1:20.367. Chloe Taylor was second and Martha Gill third. The event was free and spectators came from miles around to stand in the woods and watch riders of all ages and abilities. There was a party atmosphere at the event with music, street food stalls and a bar offering refreshments. Photo by Stuart Ritson

When the event had finsihed, Peat and some of the crowd headed to the New Barrack Tavern in Hillsborough for the afterparty.

FIVE JAILED IN WOODHEAD TUNNEL MURDER TRIAL A MAN, woman and three teenage boys were found guilty of killing 34-year-old Craig Preston in August last year.
Mohammed Shiraz Bashir, 42, and his partner Leonie Marie Mason, 24, both of Holme Park Court, Huddersfield, have been on trial at Sheffield Crown Court for 12 weeks charged with murdering Mr Preston, also known as Craig Nelson. On Wednesday May 17 they were both found guilty of murder and remanded in custody to be sentenced at a later date. On trial alongside the couple were two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, charged with murder. A jury found them not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter. The teenagers have been remanded into the care of the local authority. Mr Preston’s body was found on the morning of Monday 22 August 2016 on the moors of the A628 at Woodhead Tunnels. He had been severely beaten and a port-mortem examination determined he died as a result of head injuries. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Handley, the senior investigating
officer, said: “This has been a complex and difficult murder investigation into a brutal and sustained assault on Mr Preston in summer last year. “Bashir, Mason and the teenage boys planned together to harm Mr Preston, which we were able to demonstrate through a combination of CCTV enquiries, forensics and telecoms work. “We completed extensive telephone forensics work on the mobiles of all defendants and rather horrifyingly, were able to retrieve an image of Mr Preston’s beaten body in the boot of a car on Bashir’s phone as well as many texts between all defendants planning their attack. “This overwhelming evidence was placed before a jury who have reached their verdict today. I am pleased with today’s result and wish to recognise the work of my investigative team who have built a significant and complex case, as well as the Crown Prosecution Service and local authority, who have worked alongside us to manage this case.
“The three juvenile defendants, one of whom was just 14 at the time of Mr Preston’s murder, have shown no remorse for their actions, just as Bashir and Mason have denied their guilt throughout.”

SOUTH Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are once again warning businesses to be aware of a scam in which rogue publishers are offering advertising space in a publication they claim they are producing on behalf of the fire service.
• Don’t agree to anything until you are given full details of the publishing company and what you will get for your money
The rogue publishers make unsolicited telephone calls to businesses, in particular small businesses, doctors’ surgeries and dental practices offering advertising space in a magazine they claim is produced by the fire service.
• Read all small print of any contract carefully
Look Local was contacted by the scammers around five months ago, and we want to make sure that other local businesses are made aware. The cost of the ‘advert’ can range from £50 to anything up to £1,000. However, once you have paid you’ll find the publication either doesn’t exist or only a handful of copies are printed. Generally, if the call is bogus, the caller will only provide a PO box address and the phone number will be blocked. If you receive an unsolicited call from a publishing company:
• Ask to see terms and conditions before agreeing anything • Establish how many copies are being published, where they will be distributed and how, and where can you get hold of a copy • If you are told that someone from your company has already verbally agreed to place an advert get full details of who and when, and check with the member of staff before agreeing anything further • Ask which other companies in your area have taken advertising space and contact them to see if the caller is genuine • If you receive a demand for payment, which could be over the phone or via an ‘invoice’ respond to the demand stating why you do not owe any money Businesses which may have been contacted in this way should report any details they may have to Action Fraud www.actionfraud.police.uk/

Foster carers ask families to do something incredible SHEFFIELD City Council is asking more families to help change the lives of children and young people throughout the city by becoming foster carers. The call for more carers comes during Foster Care Fortnight, which runs nationally until Sunday May 21. In Sheffield there are 275 fostering households who look after more than 265 children. Diane from Sheffield has fostered 13 children and young people over the past five years. Working as a teacher and a youth worker for the past 20 years Diane had always wanted to foster and knew what an amazing difference foster care can make to a young person’s life. As her own three children were getting older, she had a spare room, and she found she had a lot more time on her hands and so decided to give fostering a go. At the moment Diane is looking after two young children, two teenagers as well as her own children. Diane said: “I love it – particularly working with teenagers. The teenagers I have looked after often come to me with no boundaries. But as soon as you give them some rules, as well as the respect and trust they deserve, you get a great response. “I am very active carer and I really champion the teenagers’ rights and needs. I’m on their side and I’m prepared to speak out for them wherever they need the support. As well as being a foster carer Diane is also a mentor to other foster carers who are working with teenagers. She said: “I want to dispel the myth that teenagers in care are more difficult to look after. They just need boundaries in place and to be treated with respect. “If people are thinking about it but are unsure, I want to reassure them that they can do it, even if they haven’t had experience of bringing up teenagers. “With the right support people can help make a real difference to these young people’s lives. “One girl came into my care when she was 10 on a long-term placement. She couldn’t read or write at all. Three-and–a-half years later she can now read and write in three languages. She is heavily involved in school life and she even helps me with some of the other children that come into my care. “Seeing what caring can do for people has been transformational for her and now she wants to be a foster carer when she grows up. For more information go to sheffield.gov.uk/ fostering or come along to meet our team and foster carers like Diane at our information evening on May 24, 5.45pm-8pm at Quaker Meeting House. You can call Ruth to register 0114 273 5075.

THERE aren’t many theatrical productions that can claim to be upstaged by a general election, but just weeks into the launch of their ticket sales for this year’s summer production, Thurgoland Thespians suddenly found themselves without a venue for their opening night, having been ousted by ballot boxes when Theresa May called a snap election. For just as the first show of this new comedy production, The Deacon Posers, had been agreed, posters distributed and the first tickets sold for Thursday the June 8, their booking for the venue, the Thurgoland Village Hall, was overruled as it’s also the nominated polling station for the whole of the Thurgoland area. Director, Nick Hibberd, said: “I don’t suppose there are many productions that get ousted at the last minute for a major performance of this scale. I was going to write to the Prime Minister and ask if she would reconsider the election date to one that would suit us better, but in the end, recognised that it was possibly a small sacrifice to pay for the future of the whole of the country. “As a result, the group agreed to alter the opening night to Tuesday June 6 and the whole of the cast rearranged holiday dates and work rotas to enable the show to open two days early and then immediately break for a couple of days to fit in a bowling tournament as well as the general election. “Tickets sold for the Thursday will automatically be transferred to the Tuesday and anyone who now cannot attend on that day, will be entitled to an alternative show or their money back by contacting the box office in advance.”
ELECTION KNOCKS LOCAL PLAY OFF COURSE to stop them from being thrown out onto the street. The comical farce focuses on a small group or residents that come up with an audacious and somewhat farcical method of raising money for the ‘Save Deacon Court’ fund and fortunately one that doesn’t involve them doing the ‘Full Monty’.
hopefully leaving them exhilarated and upbeat at the end. It is refreshingly modern and reflects greatly on today’s society, at the same time giving a more elderly perspective on today’s ‘fast paced’ environment.
“We would advise larger parties to book in advance if they want to be seated together as the venue is relatively small with less than 100 seats overall. With the annual pantomime we quite often find ourselves turning people away which is always disappointing,” explained Nick.
“However, with less than eight months to save the home and money only trickling in, their finances enjoy an unexpected boost from two very unlikely Nick goes on to explain, “Not prepared to give up sources, but not without major consequences.” without a fight, a small number of the pensioners come up with a novel method of raising the £1 The play has been written in such a way as to take Million pounds needed to buy and run the home the audience through a roller coaster of emotions,
Allocated tickets for the Tuesday night, Friday night and Saturday night performance are still available by calling the ‘box office’ on 0114 4535139, but spaces are limited so it is advisable to book in advance, especially for the Friday and Saturday shows.
The opening night is now Tuesday June 6, followed by a two day break and then two subsequent shows on Friday June 9 and Saturday June 10. Doors open at 7pm with curtain up at 7.30pm prompt. All seats are just £5 and can be preordered by calling 0114 4535139 with some standby tickets available on the night.
Coincidentally, The Deacon Posers is a comedy with a very current, political overtone that sits high on many of the parties manifestos - the aging population and local authority budgets. Set in an old people’s hall of residence, the tenants find themselves on the brink of eviction as the council looks to close their home as part of a major £40 Million cost saving exercise.

ECCLESFIELD School will host a wargaming convention on Saturday May 27, suitable for both seasoned wargamers and those new to the hobby. Titled ChillCon 2017, organisers say that they decided to hold the event in Sheffield because it’s been a few years since the last one in the city. The convention, which takes place from 10am to 4pm, is run by friends Sean Tate and Mathew Spaull. After years of running the Chilling Wargamers channel on Youtube, the team have decided to put a convention on. As their first show they didn’t want something too big to manage, however, there will still be plenty of traders and gaming space and even if you’re just intrigued by the hobby, it’ll be a good place to start.
The main hall will be packed with nearly 30 traders selling all manner of games, miniatures and accessories. Not only will it have some of the U.K.’s biggest names such as Mantic Games, Wargames Foundry and Warlord Games offering great deals on their best products, but we’ll also have small independent companies like Daruma Productions and Word Forge Games selling their independent games.

Family take on Three Peaks Challenge in memory of mum ON Sunday May 28 a group of 15 family and friends from Stocksbridge are set to put their walking boots on and tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks to raise money for a charity very close to their hearts. In December last year Carol Siddall sadly died following a five year battle with Ovarian cancer. Carol was a popular teacher at Malin Bridge Primary School for over 25 years and her family are honouring her memory by challenging themselves to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks and raise money and awareness for the Target Ovarian Cancer charity. The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, usually in this order, and in under 12 hours. The route is 24-miles long, and includes 5,200ft of ascent.
Annual Dawn Chorus Walk at Wharncliffe Heathlands Reserve POLICE CHASE LEADS IN STOLEN CAR CASES
Nicola Stiff, Carol’s daughter has helped to organise the fundraising challenge and along with her Dad Mick and brothers Chris and Richard, they have raised £2,655 for their chosen charity. Nicola said: “Mum died just before Christmas last year and now feels like a good time to raise some money to help with the research into this heart-breaking illness as well as raise awareness of it. “The five years we spent battling this with our beloved mum was the worst thing we have ever had to do and tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks and raising funds is our way to help to support other people in their battles.
“Survival rates from ovarian cancer are much worse compared to other forms of cancer mainly due to late diagnosis and a lack of effective treatment options. We have found that research into new
RESIDENT and migrant birds are in all in fine voice on Wharncliffe Heathlands Nature reserve at present and the annual dawn chorus walk will take place next Sunday. The walk starts at 4.30am and will be led by Andrew Hill of Wharncliffe Heathlands Trust who will identify birds singing during the walk around the woodland and heathlands. This is a fantastic opportunity to put a name to some familiar birdsongs and also some of the rarer visitors and residents of Wharncliffe.
treatment sadly lags significantly behind other cancer types and in recent years there has been a worrying decline in the UK’s spend on ovarian cancer research. “People have really got behind us and supported ahead of our challenge and we have already reached our initial fundraising target of £2500 so we have had set a new one of £3500. “We are very much looking forward to completing the Three Peaks Challenge and I am sure that Mum will be with us all every step of the way.” Target Ovarian Cancer is the UK’s leading ovarian cancer charity. The charity works to improve early diagnosis, fund life-saving research and provide much-needed support to women with ovarian cancer. ENJOY REGULAR HOLIDAYS IN THE NORTH YORKSHIRE COUNTRYSIDE!
POLICE are seeking information about two cars stolen from north Sheffield recently. A purple/blue coloured Ford Focus ST with the registration R25 BED was stolen from Greengate Lane, High Green, on Wednesday May 17 between 10pm and 5.30am. It's got a custom exhaust and two matte black vertical stripes down roof and bonnet. The owner thinks it has been professionally stolen as there was no broken glass and dash clips have been found on road where it was parked. The second car was a Mini stolen during a burglary from Chapeltown three weeks ago. Officers on proactive patrol spotted it, but it was displaying false plates. The driver decided not to stop and a pursuit took place in the Magna area of Rotherham before it was abandoned and recovered. The driver took risks which the Police pursuit driver was not willing to do so by the time the vehicle was found, the driver and passenger had made good their escape. Do you have an information to assist the police? Please call 101 and quote incident 580 16/05/2017 if you do.

Fire bikes promote Peak District safety message VOLUNTEER rangers got on their bikes to deliver a fire safety message to Peak District visitors.
scheme was a great success and our volunteer rangers received positive feedback from everyone they spoke to.
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) loaned ‘fire bikes’ to the Peak District National Park in a two-week pilot project to highlight the dangers of wildfires.
“Walkers and picnickers were intrigued to find rangers with bikes talking about the threat to moorland from wildfire. Many mountain bikers were also drawn to them for advice. We would urge all our visitors to help us to protect and care for the UK’s original national park.”
Rangers pedalled a total of 75 miles in the Upper Derwent Valley, Longdendale and Langsett areas of the National Park and spoke to 298 people about the risks of lighting fires or barbecues in the countryside. They shared images of fires and their aftermath and leaflets on how to prevent wildfires. Each year, fire destroys acres of countryside and wildlife habitats. Some fires are started deliberately, but most are due to carelessness. Jenny Waller, the Peak District National Park’s volunteer development officer, said: “The pilot
Area manager Alex Johnson, from Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, said: “Wildfires present a huge risk to the Peak District, spreading quickly and with devastating consequences. It’s therefore essential that we work with our colleagues from the National Park to help educate visitors and prevent these fires from occurring in the first instance. “ It is hoped that the fire bikes scheme will be used again, particularly at times when there is a high risk of moorland wildfires.

Stocksbridge Junior School goes all out for badges A YEAR ago, Stocksbridge Junior School decided to transform their outdoor space. What was once an unused patch of wasteland is now a beautiful network of pathways, obstacles and play areas they even have a fire pit area for cooking! They call this area Cedarwood. The children really love this area and can’t wait to spend their time on it at playtime or at lunch. However, to get the most out of the area, the teachers have been hard at work, thinking of creative ways that the area can be used for in curriculum times. David Wright, the leader of Outdoor Education at Stocksbridge Junior School, worked with children from the School Council to create a badge scheme for the children to progress through. The idea is that the children spend time in classes this half term acquiring these skills and are given a chance to demonstrate these skills following half term. Those who demonstrate the skills and show effort will gain a cloth badge, which they can sew onto their PE t-shirt, similar to the badges in Scouts. “It really has captured the children’s imagination, we are seeing some magnificent work in the outdoors as a result,” Mr Wright commented. This badge scheme has encouraged the teachers to deliver sessions outside in each subject area and the children are very much driven in their quest to earn their year group’s badge. The children in Year Three are working on their Outdoor Storyteller badge, Year Four on Independence, Year Five on Creative Marvel and Year Six on their Outdoor Chef badge which involves safely lighting a fire on the fire pit to cook on.

sheffield concert brings local choirs together SINGERS from Stannington Mixed Choir, Fox Valley Voices and Thurgoland Community Choir join together on Saturday May 27 at the Victoria Hall Methodist Church in Sheffield to showcase the flourishing musical tradition of the towns and villages in the north west of the city.
The three choirs will together perform John Rutter’s glorious Requiem, one of the most popular compositions of the last 30 years as part of a programme that includes the premiere of Night Sky Partials, a new work by Sheffield based composer Joseph Shaw, an ex-student of Bradfield School, and Sheffield Music Academy. The evening also includes individual items from each choir providing a programme for all musical tastes. These include Purcell’s Hear my Prayer, Tschaikovsky’s Crown of Roses, Aaron Copeland’s Simple Gifts, Jay Althouse’s Bright Morning Stars and songs from Les Misérables and Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat. The choirs will be accompanied by local professional musicians, Martin Thiselton (organ), John Grundy (piano), Martin Lightowler (oboe), Elliott Bailey (cello) and Hilary Osborn (soprano) and will be led by the concert’s musical director Daniel Timmins.
The concert is part of a developing community collaboration by the three choirs and previews the programme they will be performing during an exciting tour of Tuscany at the end of May. The choirs, led by Daniel Timmins, will be giving three concerts in four days in the beautiful towns of Montecatini, Pescia and San Gimignano. The Victoria Hall concert is presented by Deepcar based community arts group Inyerface Arts whose Director Hilary Osborn stated: “We are pleased to present a programme of such wide appeal to concert goers and to bring together three superb choirs from the north of the city. We are especially delighted to promote the work of Joe Shaw, a multi-talented young musician and composer, who continues to explore the wide musical heritage of his local area.”

Your Letters Lobby for the centre Last week, one of your correspondents who wished to remain nameless wrote, concerning Angela Smith and her part in the closure of the Stocksbridge Leisure centre saying that she voted to close it, this is manifestly untrue, for one obvious reason, that being she is not a member of the City Council and therefore has no vote on the City Council, she did however lobby the Council to keep the centre open but as we all know it was to no avail. Yours faithfully, Roy Morgan-Vincent
Leisure centre Dear Look Local, In reply to ‘Name and Address supplied’, I’m not sure which ‘vote’ – presumably in Westminster? – Angela Smith MP took part in to close Stocksbridge Leisure Centre.

SHLAA guidance states “Where a site is considered unsuitable for housing, the reason for the exclusion has been provided, a planning status of ‘long term option’, and an estimated dwelling capacity has been provided as per the SHLAA methodology. Any Call for Site submissions considered unsuitable, have been categorised as ‘Long Term Option’ rather than ‘No Potential’. This distinction allows for any future changes to the SHLAA assessment methodology or Local Plan policy, which could mean a site becomes suitable, and we know that there is a willing landowner.”
Magical Moments lead to Harlow Carr
A subsidised community coach trip to the R.H.S. garden at Harlow Carr near Harrogate is to be arranged to take place on a weekday during September costing £10 per head including garden entrance. Pick up points will be at the Willows at Oxspring and Penistone church, leaving at 9am and returning at 4pm.
There are a limited supply of mobility scooters available at the garden to be booked in advance. The coach is also able to transport a number of fold-up wheelchairs. Clearly, the Government’s Housing White Paper may well impact on the Sheffield Plan, thus delaying the original consultation by nine months.
In response to the letter in LL957, could I make the following observations from the 2014 Strategic Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA); To state in last week’s letter that “There are no plans to build on Mortomley Park and there never will be” is at the very least misleading.

Issue 958 Editorial Feature Local Food & Drink Call 0114 283 11 00 A tide of revived appreciation has swept through countless strata of UK life and it seems that one of these is a return to the country’s classic staples - the Royal family and traditional family dinners.
Interestingly, over a quarter of husbands polled said they would like to cook something new for their guests but over a half agreed that sticking to tried and tested favourites was the safest bet.
UK mothers have certainly come home to roost with Royal guests and classic dishes as the ultimate dinner party wish list, a new survey by The Red Tractor reveals.
And a remarkable 13 per cent of the respondents confessed that they wouldn’t cook anything for their guests.
One in four mums said they would most like to invite the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge over to dinner ahead of Dame Judy Dench, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and David Beckham according to research by Red Tractor Assurance. And while most households enjoy watching cookery programmes, the reality of juggling the kids and running a busy household makes mums play it safe when it comes to cooking the evening meal, with over a quarter of families reluctant to take inspiration from television chefs. Just two out of 10 mums seek tips and recipes from homegrown mover and shaker Jamie Oliver ahead of Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsey, Marco Pierre White and Heston Blumenthal don’t come get a lookin. Despite all the wild and wonderful cooking books, TV shows and ethnic restaurants, over 50 per cent of households opt to cook a traditional roast dinner with over a third taking the easy route and preparing the great British classic, apple crumble for pudding. Only one in 20 wanted to add some va-v-avoom to the dinner table and invite Shades of Grey author EL James.
Richard Cattell, Head of Marketing at Red Tractor which commissioned the study of more than 2,000 families, says: “We’re aware that shoppers are faced with a variety of choices, both from the high street supermarkets and also when eating out. “The survey tells us that shoppers like to support British food, with more than 55 per cent already looking out for the Red Tractor logo when choosing their dish - a clear sign people care more about food which is produced to good standards of farming and food production, with a guarantee of origin.” Research by Red Tractor has also revealed that UK shoppers eating out and cooking at home would welcome a clear guarantee that food has been produced to good standards. Over half of people polled say they look out for a symbol which demonstrates that the food has been produced to a high standard, as well as a sign of origin. And when it comes to cooking and eating out, over a third of the shoppers surveyed like to know where their ingredients come from and prefer to source UK ingredients.

Birdwell Wheelers
BIRDWELL Wheeler Dan Taylor got his second podium finish of the season when he rode the Sheffrec Open 25 Mile time trial at Hatfield last Saturday. His third place time of 55.29 was 2.13 behind winner Simon Beldon of Team SSLL and just 20 seconds quicker than fourth placed Anthony Bromley also of Team SSLL. Other Wheelers times were Paul Mason who finished in 57.54, junior Tom Booth in 1:02.26 and Greg Godley in 1:05.45. On the same day Trevor Mayne rode his second fastest ever 25 Mile time trial when he rode the South Pennine Open 25 time trial at Etwall. His time of 51.49 was just nine seconds slower than his personal best despite being baulked on one of the roundabouts. Also on Saturday Paul Heggie rode in the City RC Open 10-mile time trial at South Cave and his time of 22.06 was good enough for first out of 18 in the 60-69 age group and beat his own club age record by exactly one minute.
Footpath RunneRs compete in thReatened Race PFR runners at the May Queen Fell race in Derbyshire THE Askern 10k, a well-established and highquality road race near Doncaster, could well be facing the end of its run due to housing developments. Therefore a bumper turnout ensued, with the first Penistone Footpath Runner back being Gareth Cooke, who broke the 35 minute barrier to finish in 34.56 to achieve a first-class club standard time.
In the last of the club’s four five-mile time trials at Thurgoland, Andy Nichols of Team B38 was fastest in 11.20 just eight seconds quicker than first Wheeler home Dan Taylor.
Steve Storey was another in the first-class standards, winning the M60 prize in a time of 40.29. There were personal bests for John Lawcock and Jill Carton whilst Dave Needham was third M70 in 49.13.
On handicap Greg Godley was first in 10.29 with Rob Parkes second in 10.55. Austin Watson still leads the handicap series on 28 points only one ahead of Trevor Mayne and two ahead of Dan Taylor.
Gareth Cooke finished second in the Hathersage Hurtle, a new event in the Hope Valley, covering 20 miles and 2,500 feet of ascent. Cooke completed the course in 148:32. Richard Mackie was 17th in 172:49 and Tracey Woodward 186th in 320:18.
More details on all the above can be found on the club website www.birdwellwheelers.org

Under 9s shine in first games
WITH no first team game to report for Stocksbridge this week, the second team and under nines took centre stage. The under nines were playing their first two games at the weekend against Norton and Hallam Cricket Club. Sporting their new shirts, sponsored by Dent Devils, every player did really well. Their second game against Hallam was very close and it went to the last ball before they narrowly lost. A special mention to Charlie Robinson who top scored and hit two huge sixes. If anyone has children aged between five and eight and they would like to get involved with local cricket then please visit www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars
Stocksbridge second team travelled to Warminster Road again to Sheffield University Staff second team in the YCDL Intermediate Cup quarter final. Stocksbridge won the toss and in a reduced 20 over game because of the weather elected to field. University Staff openers rode their luck early on with some streaky boundaries off the bowling of Thwaites and Stubbs before Stocksbridge made the breakthrough with a wicket each for Thwaites Stubbs and Elliot Freeman, with his first wicket of the season, slowed the home teams run rate. The opening batsman Herath held the innings together and a succession of late to take them to good total of 138-5.

There were a number of breaks for rain which didn’t help either team and Stocksbridge made a great start to their innings with Dave Codd and Jack Murfin putting 25 runs on in first three overs. Then a straight drive from Murfin was deflected via the bowlers boot onto the stumps to run Codd in an unlucky fashion. Murfin was then caught in the deep before a productive partnership between Bob Newton and Matt Price put Stocksbridge back in the game. Whilst the middle order lost wickets attempting to keep up with the run rate Matt Price played a lone hand with an excellent innings of 57 not out as Stocksbridge fell agonisingly six runs short of the total required.

PENISTONE CHURCH’S INCREDIBLE DOUBLE Penistone Church 4 – 1 Bridlington Town
PENISTONE Church capped a fantastic season with a superb cup win on Wednesday May 17, beating a side from a league above them 4-1 in the final, held at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane. Manager Ian Richards had already guided his side to promotion from the NCEL Division One to the Premier League and faced one of their opponents from next season, Bridlington Town, in the final of the NCEL Cup. And goals from Scott Whittington, Brett Lovell, Andy Ring and Danny Barlow saw Church cause an upset to lift the cup in front of a bumper crowd of 485. By the 70th minute, Church were 4-0 up and cruising and by the time Jake Day hit a consolation for Bridlington in the 84th minute, the result was already a formality. Speaking after the win, Ian Richards said: “What a way to finish my final post-match interview of an unbelievable season and its nice finishing it off talking about doing the double, beating Bridlington Town, the third best team in the NCEL Premier Division, 4-1 at Bramall Lane. “Being 4-0 up is what dreams are made of in terms of football, these are local lads, this is local community football club, me and Duncan are from Penistone, Jimmy Stafford came on and he’s playing
for the reserves at the start of the season and he’s come on at Bramall Lane. “Tom Jones, in probably his last game for the club, has come on and he’s done well, Andy Ring who has been one of my best friends in football for the last 15 years has scored, Scott Whittington, who had fallen out with football, had an excellent game, Danny Barlow scored and so has Brett Lovell, who has been one of my best friends in football. “You’ve also got Ash Ellis, Jack Moore and Danny Howes who have been there from day one, it’s just an exceptional achievement. We have to enjoy this high we have to cherish it and make the most of it might be the best thing we ever do to win the double to win promotion from the NCEL Division One and winning the NCEL Cup Final at Bramall Lane. We have to enjoy it and make the most of it.
FOUR TOO GOOD: Brett Lovell was on the scoresheet in the historic win which seals a fantastic season for Church. Photo: Ian Revitt
“Again tonight you saw the honesty, you saw the commitment you saw the desire of these football players, what they give for each other, what they give for me and Duncan is second to none and you saw at the end once we had had our celebration we were straight over to the community - the fans who had come to watch us. I thank them for that and I’m pleased that you saw another exceptional performance from Penistone Church Club I’m so proud of each and every player.”
