ecclesfield School pupil through to Britain’s Got Talent final

AN ECCLESFIELD School pupil has made it through to the final of Britain’s Got Talent after three years of hard work since being rejected in 2014. Kyle Tomlinson was just 12 when he last appeared on the show. Judge David Walliams rejected him then, telling the teenager to get singing lessons. But Kyle returned this year at the age of 15 and the same judge used his golden buzzer to send him through to the final. Kyle said of his turnaround in fortunes: “Back then I thought I was really good, the best thing since sliced bread. “But David kind of put me in my place. I was absolutely gutted but he was spot-on what he said. I haven’t looked back since then to be honest. “So I sat down and thought about it, and the day after I went to my mum and dad and told them I needed singing lessons. “My nana and grandad have paid for them every day since three years ago. It’s £15 every 30 minutes, and once a week, so it’s a lot of money.” Although he appeared nervous at first, Kyle soon settled and belted out a stunning cover of Adele’s When We Were Young. Almost 1.5 million people voted on the first semi-final that Kyle appeared in but the popular singer booked his place in the final and will be hoping to go on to launch a successful career.

Penistone Police Station manned A TEAM of dedicated officers have begun working from Penistone, Barnsley, committed solely to that area. As of early last week, two PCSOs and one police officer are now based at the town’s station and will work their shift patterns from there, helping to keep Penistone a safe and enjoyable place to live. The officers will meet and be briefed at Penistone Police Station before heading out on their shifts. Other officers will of course also still cover Penistone whenever necessary. The decision comes as consultation as part of the force’s neighbourhood policing review continues across the county. The review is being carried out in stages, with key changes to be implemented in the autumn of this year. All areas of South Yorkshire will have a new neighbourhood policing service, which will be formed on an evidence base of detailed research. Teams will look at neighbourhood needs, crime, harm, tensions, fear and incidents. The force is beginning to look at options for the return of neighbourhood policing, and once proposals are formed, they will be shared with members of the public and partners. Sergeant Ian Bailey, who covers Penistone, said: “While Penistone station enquiry desk has been closed for a number of years, we have always had PCSOs and dedicated Specials who worked from that area and of course, officers were deployed there when needed. “We were aware that people living in Penistone had concerns and didn’t feel as though they had a visible policing presence there. I’m pleased that we are now able to do more and to put officers back into Penistone.

“I’ve no doubt that the residents of Penistone will give these officers a warm welcome and I’d encourage people to speak to them while they’re out and about or at the station, about any concerns they may have.” Senior officers are also in talks with local residents, regarding volunteering at the police station, with the possibility of the enquiry desk re-opening in the future. Chief Superintendent Scott Green, Barnsley District Commander, said: “I am committed to ensuring that the residents of Penistone, and anyone living in Barnsley, feel supported by us. “So far, we have had a large number of people come forward who have expressed an interest in volunteering at the police station. This is in its very early stages at the minute but I’m pleased we’ve already made some positive steps in how we police Penistone.” Assistant Chief Constable David Hartley, lead for neighbourhood policing, said: “One of our main reasons for holding these public consultation events is to ensure we hear from members of the public about the issues concerning them and what they want from their local force. “Your views are incredibly important as they will ultimately help to shape our new policing model and I’m grateful to everyone who has attended so far and shared their opinions with us. “Residents in Penistone shared their concerns with us and after listening carefully to them, I’m pleased that together we are working towards a solution that will ensure Penistone is sufficiently policed and that residents feel reassured and supported by us.”

Touching family tribute as Stocksbridge pair prepare to take on major charity challenge TWO South Yorkshire men are preparing to take on the challenge of a lifetime next month – in memory of family members who have lost their lives to cancer. School friends Dan Hart and Calvin Marsland, from Stocksbridge, are gearing up for their final fundraising push before their charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro which is on target to raise an amazing £35,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity. Dan is taking on the challenge in memory of his dad Adrian Hart and aunty, Alison Hart and Calvin is climbing the iconic mountain in memory of his Mum Kelsey Marsland who lost her battle with cancer in 2015. It will take them six days to complete the climb which has been organised by World Expeditions and the pair will be flying out to Tanzania on June 9 to take on their challenge. Standing 5,895m (19,341 feet) Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s most iconic climbs. Over the last 12 months the pair have taken on challenges including the Three Peaks and Mount Snowdon and have even sold a special Mount Kili charity beer to help their fundraising target. Before they set off Dan and Calvin are now planning a final fundraising push with a special charity balloon launch in memory of their family members and to give friends and family a chance to wish them well in their challenge.

The event will take place on Friday June 2 at 2pm at Fox Valley in north Sheffield during the centre’s busy Friday Market which will also have extra entertainment to give Dan and Calvin a big send off from their local community. Calvin said: “This is something Dan has wanted to do for a long time. I lost my Mum in 2015 just before her 50th birthday and this just seemed like the right time to do something that would raise money for Weston Park and also be a tribute to the family members we have both lost to cancer. Dan added: “We’ve been planning this for such a long time - it will be quite emotional I’m sure when we get to the summit. “We’ve had such an amazing amount of support from everyone and we hope lots of people will come along and wish us luck at the event at Fox Valley on June 2nd.” Centre Manager at Fox Valley, Annabel Plumtree said “It is a real pleasure to support Dan and Calvin with their challenge to raise lots of money for such a fantastic cause which obviously means so much to them both. “We’d like to wish them both the very best of luck with their challenge from everyone at Fox Valley.” If you would like to support Dan and Calvin balloons are available to buy in advance from their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ kilimanjarowestonpark

The scheme began in 2005 when Wharncliffe Side worked with CRESST, a Sheffield charity that teaches children and young people conflict resolution skills. Every year since, the school has run workshops for their children and invited a team of volunteers to train as peer mediators. These young peacemakers then organise a rota to help younger

The school says that the support of peer mediators makes the school a much calmer place as problems are dealt with effectively and efficiently. Staff, including the headteacher, report a very positive impact on those who volunteer. Some comments were: “[Peer mediators] are more confident, better at solving their own problems” “They have increased self-belief and confidence” “Some become really grown up and responsible” “They have become excellent role models in the school” A parent commented: “It’s a really important skill to be able to sort problems out … it does give them a chance to do that.”

Ellis Brooks from Quakers in Britain, who introduced the award, said: “We were really impressed by the school’s commitment. Reading the nomination, we knew it was a true whole school approach to conflict resolution because teachers, parents and crucially children all talked about the difference it makes.

The contest gives small scale food producers a chance to showcase their product and compete against other similar products. Studio Lambert are looking to speak to producers of baked goods, sweets, cheese, meat, fish, preserves, chutneys, condiments and drinks. In each episode, we’ll met four different food producers and get to know them, their product and how it is created. These four food producers are then brought together in a beautiful local shop in Yorkshire where each product has its own stand. Each product will be tasted and critiqued by two expert judges as well as members of the local community. The winner is then picked based

“We hope everyone involved with the project at Wharncliffe Side Primary School is feeling proud of their achievements.”

“What was particularly impressive about Wharncliffe Side is that they’ve stayed focused for more than a decade. That means hundreds of people in Sheffield growing up with mediation skills and experience.” The ‘Lighting the Fire’ national peer mediation award was launched this year by LEAP Confronting Conflict, a prestigious London youth organisation. North Sheffield features in new run routes WITH more than 800 parks, woodlands and green spaces, Sheffield: The Outdoor City is already well known as the perfect place to walk, jog or run. But now getting out and about on the city’s trails has been made even easier, with the launch of signposted run routes at seven new locations. This is the second phase of the Run Route initiative, funded by England Athletics, which officially launched last year as part of the wider Outdoor City project. In total, 30 signed Run Routes have been created at 14 locations across the city, providing simple to follow trails through Sheffield’s parks and woodlands. There are a number of different routes at each site, which are colour coded, graded as Easy, Medium, Hard and Challenging, and which loop back to a clear starting point with a noticeboard and map. In addition to the city centre, the other sites to be included in this new phase of run routes are Rivelin, High Hazels, Firth Park, Shire Brook Nature Reserve, Thorncliffe and Wharncliffe. Sites in the first phase of the project were Concord Park and Woolley Woods, Ecclesall Woods, Bradfield, Graves Park, Lowfield, Manor Fields

Park, and Ponderosa and Crookes Valley. As well as the signed routes, led runs with trained running leaders are also taking place at several of the sites. These include Ecclesall Routes, Rivelin Valley, Bradfield and Shire Brook Nature Reserve, and are led by trained community run leaders. Organised runs to try out the new routes will also take place throughout Move More Month in June. These will be held at the Ponderosa park at 12.30pm on Wednesday June 7, meeting at Weston Park Bandstand; at Thorncliffe on Wednesday June 14 at 7pm, meeting at the new sports centre; at Firth Park at 11am on Saturday June 24, meeting at Henry’s Café, and from the car park of High Hazels Park on Friday June 30, starting at 7pm. Walkers and runners who prefer to explore alone, meanwhile, can see maps and descriptions of the routes, as well as videos, on The Outdoor City website. Meanwhile, handy pocket-sized leaflets are also available, detailing each of the run routes, with photos and maps. For more information, visit The Outdoor City website at www. theoutdoorcity.co.uk/the-outdoorcity-run-routes/

WASPI demonstrate in Sheffield

The Castle Inn, Bolsterstone CARR QUARTET SAT 3RD JUNE FROM 9PM LIVE HENRY MARTIN RIVERS BAND SAT 10TH JUNE FROM 9PM

MUSIC

NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

NEW! PIE NIGHT TUESDAYS FROM 5PM

ARE you a woman born in the 1950s? Did you expect to get your state pension at 60? WASPI – Women Against State Pension Inequality campaigns for you. Many women born in the 1950s started work at 15 years old, and have worked for more than 40 years paying into the NI fund expecting to retire at 60. Successive governments have increased the state pension age – firstly in 1995, then again in 2011. Carolyn from WASPI said: “Unfortunately, no-one thought to tell us! Some women received letters only two years before their expected retirement date informing them that their state pension age was up to six years later! Some women still haven’t been informed! “Six years “lost” pension adds up to an income loss of at least £36,000. We can’t make that up given only two years notice! We saved all our working lives so that we could have a few treats in retirement – those savings

are now being used to plug this massive income gap. “We believe in equality and are not asking the government to reverse the changes to state pension age. We are asking for fair transitional arrangements for all women affected. One cohort of women should not have to suffer such a major change. Yes, changes need to be made – but not all at once, and definitely not in secret! “WASPI is a national campaign, with more than 140 local groups all over the UK. Some 21,000 women living in Sheffield are affected by this scandal. Isn’t it about time we all get together and do something about it?” The first meeting of the Sheffield WASPI group was held on Friday May 19. Women attending were so incensed by the unfairness of the delay in receiving their pensions that they decided to join in the WASPI National Day of Local Action demonstration. Carolyn continued: “We met at the Women of Steel statue to raise awareness by handing

out leaflets and telling women about the group. One 58 year old woman we spoke to still expected to receive her state pension at 63. . . . she won’t see a penny until she’s at least 66! “We have a lot of support across Sheffield from the political candidates. Former labour MPs Gill Furniss (Brightside & Hillsborough) and Angela Smith (Penistone & Stocksbridge) have all signed the WASPI pledge. Gill also came along to show her support on the day. Other candidates have been approached and we await their responses. “If you are a woman born in the 1950s and want to do something about your lost pension, join us. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday June 13 at 7.30pm in the Foyer, 2 Spring Lane, Sheffield S2 2JQ.

Quartet makes school visit

Indian Restaurant and Takeaway

ON Wednesday May 24, the children and staff at High Green Primary School were given a special treat as a beautiful music concert was put on in the school hall by the Woodfield String Quartet. The Woodfield String Quartet is made up of four musicians from High Green and Chapeltown with two of them mums of pupils at the school. Violinists Claire Streets, violist Julie Doubleday were supported

As mums to young children, they hope to inspire more children in the North of Sheffield to take up a musical instrument.

A spokesperson for the school told Look Local: “Pupils and staff would like to say a massive thank you to the Woodfield String Quartet for coming in to the school and playing their beautiful music.

As well as delivering workshops and concerts for schools, the Woodfield String Quartet provide background music for weddings and perform concerts in and around South Yorkshire. Their next concert is on June 4 at the Chapel on The Bridge in Rotherham.

“Our school prides itself on the musical opportunities we offer our children which include our pupil school choir, guitar, brass, violin and keyboard lessons. We are sure that after listening to the concert it will encourage more of our pupils to take up learning a musical instrument.”

by violinist Jemimah Lipka and cellist Anna Potts.

Cannon Hall Museum celebrates 60th birthday in style CANNON Hall Museum is celebrating its 60th birthday in style by bringing some of Hollywood’s finest wedding dresses to Yorkshire.

The ‘Tales of the Wedding Dress - from Homemade to World Stage’ exhibition features costume gowns worn by stars including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kiera Knightley, and coincides with the 60th anniversary of the museum - which opened at the hall on 1 June 1957. Displayed in rooms that saw the love story of residents Walter and Mary Spencer-Stanhope unfold, it is the first time that the collection of wedding dresses, worn by some of the most famous actresses in the world, will be displayed together in the same place. Costume wedding dresses worn by stars including Meryl Streep, Kiera Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Helena Bonham-Carter, as well as the gown worn by Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria in the recent ITV series, will all be available to view for free from Friday May 26. The ‘World Stage’ costumes will sit alongside a collection of handmade and homemade wedding dresses, all crafted in Barnsley, which range from a 1930s silk wool gown to a modern-day Wizard of Oz themed ensemble. Alison Cooper, Exhibitions Officer at Barnsley Museums, curated the exhibition. She said: “Cannon Hall’s history is steeped in love and romance and this exhibition really draws on that heritage. Being able to bring some of these fascinating Hollywood costume dresses together in Barnsley is a fantastic way to mark the 60th birthday of the museum.” The celebrations continue on Sunday June 4, with a family day in the grounds. In partnership with volunteer group The Friends of Cannon Hall, the party will feature Morris dancers, a brass band, arts and crafts and a beer tent. Cannon Hall is celebrating more than just its birthday in 2017. Earlier this year, the visitor attraction secured a grant of almost £3m to restore its 70-acre grounds to their former Georgian glory - thanks to a successful Heritage Lottery Fund and

Big Lottery Fund’s Parks for People programme bid.

And June 2017 also marks the first anniversary of the hall’s De Morgan display, which features handpicked artworks by ceramicist William De Morgan and his artist wife Evelyn Pickering De Morgan. Both had strong links to the Spencer-Stanhopes, the hall’s most famous residents. Walter and Mary Spencer-Stanhope married in 1783 and lived together at the hall for over 40 years, bearing 15 children. The De Morgan collection will be on display until the end of 2020 and Cannon Hall is the only place in the North of England where the pieces can be viewed in all their glory on a lasting basis. Phillip Spurr, Service Director of Culture, Housing and Regulation at Barnsley Council, said: “Cannon Hall’s parks and gardens had over 400,000 visitors last year, and summer is the perfect time to enjoy them - but we want to remind people of the treasures they can find by venturing inside the hall too. We’re really proud of our anniversary year exhibitions, and we’re calling on the people of Barnsley and beyond to make the most of what can be found on their doorstep.” ‘Tales of the Wedding Dress – from Homemade to World Stage’ runs at Cannon Hall Museum until Sunday 3 September. The De Morgan display runs until 2020. For almost 300 years, Cannon Hall was home to the Spencer-Stanhope family who made their fortunes in the local iron industry. Visitors can still see the portraits of Walter and Mary Spencer-Stanhope, which hang side-by-side in the dining room. In 1951, Cannon Hall was sold to Barnsley Corporation (now known as Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council), and opened as a museum six years later. The ballroom at the hall was initially built in 1891 for a Spencer-Stanhope wedding, and couples are still able to marry in it today. For more information about the birthday celebrations and the exhibition, visit www.cannonhall.com

STAR OF TV’S THE CHASE COMES TO VENUE PAUL Sinha, aka ‘The Sinhaman’ from ITV1’s National Television Award winning quiz The Chase is bringing his latest comedy show to The Venue, Stocksbridge on Friday June 30. His other TV and radio credits include Tonight at the Palladium, Seven Day Sunday, Just A Minute, Loose Ends, The Alternative Comedy Experience and Fighting Talk among numerous others. There is a full supporting line up of acts including Stevie Gray, Steff Todd and Sheffield’s own Russell Cutts. The night is compered and promoted by the award winning comedian Anthony J. Brown

through his Stagefright Comedy company. Anthony said: “It is a delight to be able to bring multiaward winning international performers of the calibre of Paul Sinha to Stocksbridge. “The Venue is a great room for comedy and previous comedy nights there have shown there is a definite appetite in the area for some quality stand up. “And the chance to witness new material from Paul before he takes it up to the Edinburgh Festival should hopefully prove irresistible to any folk with a prominent funny bone.” The show starts at 8pm. Sir,

Got something to say?

I am sure tram users will join me in congratulating SYPTE in their latest updating of the tram Passenger Information Displays at Middlewood park and ride in doubling the amount of incorrect information shown by adding fictitious arrival times to the displays to go with the fictitious departure information that is all too often displayed.

Sunday May 21 was a gents Stableford competition with 29 entrants. This was won by David Buxton with 42 points and runner up was Jason Dean with 38 points. There was a ladies medal competition with Hilja O’ Sullivan winning with a net score of 73. Alison Sedgewick came second with a net score of 77. Wednesday May 24 saw 35 Dragons compete for the Horace Marklew Putter. Again this was a close run medal competition with the top eight players separated by only two shots. The winner was Alf Pearson with a fine score of 63 (two under par) with Bob Haythorne on 64. Best gross score went to Bob Mason. Thursday’s mid week Stableford Division One competition was won by Steve Clayton on 37 points with Division Two won by John Needham on 40 points. The Ladies nine-hole Stableford was won by Bev Sykes. The Stocksbridge league team were away at Silkstone and came up against a very strong team, losing by two points to six. This was their first defeat in four matches.

Tigers remain unbeaten at home SHEFFIELD maintained their unbeaten home record with a hard fought 46-44 win over Glasgow in a tense encounter at Owlerton. In the build-up to the meeting, many expected the clash to go down to the wire with nothing to separate the two sides on paper. And that’s how it panned out. Both teams held two point advantages at various points throughout the meeting - but neither were able to pull any further clear than that. When Dan Bewley and Richie Worrall bagged a 5-1 for the visitors in heat 12, it looked as though momentum had swung in favour of the Scottish outfit as they moved 34-32 in front. However, two hugely important rides from Josh Grajczonek, one when he team rode superbly with captain Kyle Howarth for a massive maximum in heat 13 and a brave opening lap move in the finale to send him on his way to the chequered flag, proved pivotal for the Tigers. “That’s exactly the reason why we brought Josh here to Sheffield this year,” team boss Simon Stead said. “When the pressure was on in those big heats he came up with the goods and it was a stunning 14+1 paid max for him tonight. “Every single point was crucial in the end, but we had to fight extremely hard because a few members of the team weren’t quite firing how we’d like tonight. “But we’re delighted with yet another home win over what is a really powerful Glasgow side as they proved here.” The Tigers are back in action at Owlerton next Thursday (June 1) when they look to overturn a four point deficit in the second leg of the Knockout Cup against Edinburgh. SHEFFIELD 46: Josh Grajczonek 14+1, Lasse Bjerre 9+1, Kyle Howarth 8, Todd Kurtz 5, Rob Branford 5, Josh Bates 4+2, Jack Parkinson-Blackburn 1+1. GLASGOW 44: Richard Lawson 11, Aaron Summers 10+2, Dan Bewley 6+1, Tom Perry 6+1, Nike Lunna 6, Richie Worrall 4, Jack Smith 1.

Future is bright for Stocksbridge cricket CHARTER STANDARD COMMUNITY CLUB

continued from back page and finished not out, a knock of real experience which was massively needed. A huge 10 wicket win for Stocksbridge first XI after a superb all round performance. That’s three wins from four in the league, with the firsts travelling to title chasing Hollinsend next week. It’s sure to be a hugely entertaining game for the in form Stocksbridge. Stocksbridge CC second team had there first home game of the season against league leaders Walkley CC first team. After some rain before the start and a shower between innings no time was lost and a full 46 overs per innings was able to be completed. Walkley won the toss and inserted Stocksbridge who got off to a solid start with openers Elliot Freeman and Ant Siddall putting on 30 for first wicket before Freeman was caught at mid-off. Chris Ogley and Luke Davis went cheaply leaving Stocksbridge on 48-3 before a brisk 24 from Liam Grayson, including two huge sixes, took the total onto 75 when Grayson nicked one to the keeper and walked. Ant Siddall and Tom Dobson then built a partnership of 83 to put Stocksbridge in a strong position to set another large total for the opposition to chase. Siddall was then stumped after making a superb 66 for his first half century of the season. Tom Dobson continued his good form this season with the bat to collect his half century and some aggressive stroke

play before he was out for 72 and Mark Wingfield also holed out to a catch in the deep after a brisk 12. Then came the three under 15 juniors who had been selected for the 2nd team Rowan Brearley, Cameron Illingworth Ralph and Jack Firth. They helped take the innings to a total of 226-8 with excellent batting from all three which they can be proud of.

with 18 Junior and Senior squads?

You will then have the opportunity to progress to our U18’s and then into our top County Senior Premier sideand into Evostik semi-professional football.Steels are the highest placed local club in the pyramid of South Yorkshire.

The Walkley innings never really threatened to chase down the total and only a defiant 77 from veteran John Hudson made their total of 166 respectable.

Bridge travel well STOCKSBRIDGE’S first XI travelled to Sheffield University Staff first XI for their first away game of the season.

The opening pair were backing each other up superbly from both ends. Hibbert struck again and picked us his third wicket, removing the number four LBW.

Joe Hibbert, who was stand-in captain, lost the toss and Stocksbridge were made to field first; this was a positive as they made a great start.

gave nothing away and bowled superbly picking up 4-23 off his 12 overs. Ben Cherry picked up the final two wickets, leaving University Staff bowled out for a miserable 69. It was a brilliant performance, however the game wasn’t finished and the batting innings were set to commence.

Vickers, deservedly, joined the party and picked his first wicket of the innings bowling the University Staff captain after continuously bogging down and frustrating him.

Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers continued their brilliant form with the new ball in hand, the pair bowled with accuracy and pace to cause the opening batsmen all sorts of problems.

Ozzie Warren and Matt Price walked to the crease and the pair batted with composure and ease, with Price remaining anchored and holding the innings together. Warren put every bad ball away to boundary and took on the University Staff attack. The pair chased the target down with ease and knocked the runs off without a single wicket going down.

It was a brilliant start, leaving University Staff 20-4 off the opening 14 overs. The platform was set and Stocksbridge were on top and not taking their foot off the gas. Nothing was given away in the field and everyone was giving their all to save every run.

It was Hibbert who was the first to strike and bowled out their opener. Hibbert grew in confidence with every ball, removing the number three batsmen for a miserable duck.

Jim Tomlinson was in to the attack and his intelligence with ball shone. He started to rip through the middle order, leaving University Staff in all sorts of trouble. He

From the other end Vickers continued to bowl with aggression and accuracy; the batters couldn’t get him off the square.

Warren hit a huge six, to bring up his fifty but more importantly to knock the runs off. Fellow opener Matt Price did his job

A YORKSHIRE PLAN FOR BREXIT Labour wants to make a success of Brexit for Yorkshire. The outcome of last year’s referendum was clear – we are leaving the EU. That much is settled – the matter now is what exit deal we get. The Tories are threatening to take us out with no deal. That would be catastrophic for Yorkshire’s economy, for businesses and ordinary families.
