organised by World Expeditions. Standing 5,895m Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and one of the world’s most iconic climbs.

Over the last 12 months the pair have taken on challenges including the Three Peaks and Mount Snowdon and have even sold a special Mount Kili charity beer to help their fundraising target. Friends and well wishers turned out to the balloon launch held at Fox Valley – the local Boslterstone Male Voice Choir also performed at the special event. Calvin, aged 22, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people here wishing us well and helping us to reach our target before we set off on Friday.

“We want to raise as much money as possible for people who are affected by cancer. We can’t wait to get going now and are looking forward to the challenge ahead.” Dan, aged 24, added: “It was a great send off and we’d like to thank everyone who has supported us – we honestly couldn’t have done it without the amazing amount of help and support we have had.” Centre Manager at Fox Valley, Annabel Plumtree said “It was a real pleasure to support Dan and Calvin with their challenge to raise lots of money for such a fantastic cause which obviously means so much to them both. “They’ll be setting off this week with the best wishes of everyone on the Fox Valley team.”

Chapeltown woman continues work in Kenyan village IT is eight years since the build of Hope Junior School in the village of Marimani, Kenya was made possible by a very kind donation from Susan Birkby and the residents of Grenoside. At least once a year since then, Chapeltown woman Helen Flanagan has returned alone, adding shaded area for the children to eat lunch in, replaced the kitchen three times, and helped with toilets and water supply. Munga, 12, was bitten by a venemous snake and now has a personal tutor thanks to Helen

Repairs have been carried out many ties due to heavy rains and at the moment, the walls are crumbling yet again with only one classroom in use. The uniforms some of the children are wearing were made in 2009 so they have been handed down over the years.

Helen told Look Local: “In 2015 two ladies from my hotel joined me on one of my outings. Sue and her daughter Cathy from the village of Denmead near Portsmouth were both touched and amazed by what they saw so much so they returned with me in March 2016 armed with clothes and toys for the children.

“Two months later, June I received a phone call telling me Cathy had passed away aged 40. I was speaking to her the night previous. Her mother, her sister, Jean, along with Cathy’s sister, Ali, decided they would like to return in March 2017. “Jean had previously run a charity and spent time in The Gambia doing rice runs on a large scale, funds were still available and she kindly donated funds to rebuild the school, this time of stone.” Extensive work was carried out on a classroom but more work is needed and Helen, along with Sue and Ali, are returning in October with what they hope will be sufficient funds to complete stage two. It’s not just the building Helen and her friends have helped with, they also took party bags full of toys and stationary. They also provided food for 48 children and parents. Clothes were provided for all ages and the children spent a lot of time blowing up balloons.

The venom has partially paralysed him down one side of his body, also causing learning difficulty. Because of this, he was not allowed in school. But Helen has arranged a tutor for him, one-on-one. He is the first in class every day, learning to write with his good hand and learning from his new text books. The teacher is paid £10 per week and he is happy with that. The work still isn’t done and Helen says she already has more plans in the pipeline. She commented: “At the end of May I am travelling to Denmead where Ali has organised fund raising events which will all go to the school. March 2018 will hopefully see phase two, a second classroom. “I would like to say thank you to all the people who have helped over the years with donations of clothes and toys. And of course the people of Grenoside. Without their original donation there would not be a school.”

One of the boys in the village is called Munga and he is 12. Four years ago he was bitten by a snake which entered his home.

Innovative moorland campaign is bogtastic THE wheels are in motion to bring the breath-taking beauty of the Peak District and South Pennine moors to the people, allowing them to step onto a virtual peat bog without having to get their boots wet! The Moors for the Future Partnership is working on the first ever “moor in a van” – a Bogtastic mobile exhibition vehicle welcoming visitors in city and town centres across the Peak District and South Pennines to experience the sights, sounds and even the smells of our iconic uplands. The partnership hopes to inspire as many people as pos-

sible to value and love their local moors. As well as the van, the partnership is exploring new ways to bring the Bogtastic experience to key locations across the area by developing alternatives to traditional noticeboards. The special interpretation will give people the chance to get a hands-on understanding of the vitally important landscape on their doorstep and the opportunity to feel the sensation of Sphagnum moss, a vital bog plant that can hold up to 20 times its own weight in water. Across vast areas of the Peak District and South Pennine uplands, Sphagnum mosses have

been killed off by pollution from the industrial revolution and wildfire, leaving vulnerable peat exposed. These moorlands are home to unique and iconic wildlife including curlew, golden plover, short-eared owl and mountain hare, as well as providing drinking water to millions of people across the UK. Healthy peat moors can also help to reduce flooding in local at-risk towns and villages and contribute to reducing the effects of climate change by storing carbon. The contract for the innovative project was awarded to local firm FDA Design from

Hathersage. Subcontractors will supply a custom-built van, design and construct a novel audio-visual experience for inside the vehicle and work on the interpretation panels. The Bogtastic van will be ready to hit the road later this year and will be travelling across the whole of the Peak District and South Pennines. The campaign is part of the Moors for the Future Partnership’s MoorLIFE 2020 project, funded by the EU LIFE programme and co-financed by Severn Trent Water, Yorkshire Water and United Utilities.

Bradfield festival returns SATURDAY June 24 to Saturday July 1 marks the 20th Bradfield Festival of Music since its revival in 1998. There were a number of music festivals in the church during the 19th century, and the church has a long musical tradition. Outstanding local artists, including 10-piece brass ensemble Austonley Brass and organist Neil Taylor will be performing this year. But the reputation of the Bradfield Festival is now such that world class classical musicians are proud to be included in the programme, and look forward to performing at Bradfield. Proms piano soloist with a worldwide following Benjamin Grosvenor makes his third visit to the Festival, while the world famous Chamber Ensemble of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields are making their second visit.

New York and jazz greats Jacquie Dankworth and Charlie Wood. The ever popular soprano Elizabeth Watts returns to the Festival, with companion song smiths Christopher Ainslie, Nicky Spence and Audrey Hyland. The programme will finish with a magical night of gypsy music and Schubert played by the unique ensemble ZRI who combine the sounds of violin, cello, clarinet, accordion and santouri. The Revd Alan Isaacson, Rector of Bradfield and Chair of the Music Festival Trustees, said: “We are looking forward to another amazing week of outstanding musical performances at Bradfield. “The beauty of the medieval church, with its clear acoustic, in the dramatic Peak District setting, make every concert an evening to remember.” For more information, visit www.bradfieldfestivalofmusic.co.uk

EASYLIFE MOBILITY ANDY Gabbitas, proprietor of The Wortley Arms, and Aled Williams of High Green are dusting off their walking boots to join intrepid television presenter Jeff Stelling in another unbelievable walking challenge for Prostate Cancer UK. Owls fan Andy and Blade Aled are setting aside their football rivalries to join Jeff on Day 11 of the march, walking over 25 miles from Burnley FC, across the Pennine hills, through Hebden Bridge to Huddersfield Town FC on Monday June 12. Teaming up with the leading men’s health organisation, the long-standing Soccer Saturday host is aiming to raise £500,000 on his March for Men, 15 walking marathons in 15 days at the start of June, from Exeter City FC to Newcastle United FC.

Andy and Aled were inspired to join #JeffsMarch for Prostate Cancer UK because like many others they have friends and family who have had or are living with prostate cancer. Andy said: “Ignoring prostate cancer won’t beat it, so I joined the fight by signing up to Jeff ’s Men United March. The Wortley Arms is a Men United pub and we regularly hold events to raise funds to support Prostate Cancer UK, including Aled’s monthly Pop Quiz.”

Just on the edge of Sheffield in the picturesque village of Worrall, the Festival and Gala provides weekend entertainment for all ages. Headlining the Friday night concert is energetic folk band, Isembard’s Wheel, who describe themselves as “a Sheffield-based band of wayfarers and rabblerousers. Rowdy, bohemian and always inventive.” Joining them on the Friday are the talented Mark and Catherine Pugh of local folk band Jack’s Rake, Richard Brown and Alice Bryan.

Report ‘pop-up brothel’ activity CRIMESTOPPERS has launched a campaign appealing for information on those running pop up brothels in Yorkshire and Humberside, many of which housing women against their will. The appeal is being launched by the independent charity across the region as it looks to tackle the issue of women being used as sex slaves within these brothels, with many suffering abuse in the most inhumane conditions. These brothels are usually newly-acquired properties, often privately rented flats or houses, in towns and cities, which may only be used as a brothel for a short period of time. Budget hotels or holiday properties are also sometimes used. Many of the women forced to work in these brothels are Eastern European, Thai and Nigerian; and may also be living in the property for the short period of time the brothel is running. There are a number of signs which could indicate a pop-up brothel is being run: · Limited activities usually associated with new people moving into a property (e.g. no removals) · Limited, or scarcely, furnished, appears no one actually living there · Multiple women living at the address, or who may be brought to and taken from the address by an individual

· Multiple vehicles visiting the property at any one time · Many frequent visitors, usually male, who don’t stay for long periods of time. Crimestoppers is now launching this campaign to appeal for information from the public on those running these brothels and abusing these vulnerable women. Those that have information can contact the charity anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through our Anonymous Online Form at Crimestoppers-uk.org. Gemma Wilson, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, said: “These brothels are dens for criminals to recruit and house vulnerable women who are then put through ordeals no woman should have to go through. “People who run these brothels run them within our communities, think they can get away with it, and have no limits as to what they will do to their victims. “On the victim’s behalf and that of Crimestoppers, I’m appealing to people who might have information on those running these brothels, so we can shut them down and give the victims some hope of getting their lives back.” If you have any information on pop up brothels in Yorkshire and Humber, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through our Anonymous Online Form at Crimestoppers-uk. org.

Mr Jason Lycett 07762385249 STOCKSBRIDGE and District History Society are seeking any information about the now-defunct Stocksbridge Wheelers cycling club.

If you know anything about the club or have any anecdotes, the history society would like to hear from you.

The photo above was taken in 1905 and the society has managed to name all of the men.

The Society has opened a new Museum and Heritage Centre in the Town Hall at Stocksbridge.

However, details are still missing. When did the club start? When did it cease to exist? Were they successful competitively?

They are open from 10am to 12pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call in or contact Look Local if you can help.

Don’t let cutbacks squeeze goodness from your diet

Economic pressures inevitably put a strain on family finances as household budgets bear the brunt of price increases and wage freezes. Families up and down the land are harnessing all the weapons at their disposal to deflect the impact of the financial squeeze but some are sacrificing their health as a result. New research has revealed that one in five Brits is eating less healthily due to the rising cost of living and more than half believe their health has suffered because of the recession. With the UK dipping back into recession and food inflation on the rise, new data finds the continuing rise in the cost of living means that 10.6 million Brits are not eating as healthily as they would like. The study by PruHealth, which ran at the start of the financial downturn in 2008

and again this year, highlights the nation’s health is sinking further into the doldrums in terms of its eating habits. Over the last four years 75% of Brits have changed their eating and shopping habits and 85% blame the recession and or rising food prices as the reason for the shift. The ‘five-a-day’ mantra is one of the most high profile Government health campaigns but the number of Brits struggling to reach the recommended target has increased by 26%. Nearly 60% admit they are currently finding it a challenge to eat healthily compared to 47% at the start of the recession in 2008. More than two thirds of Brits say healthier foods tend to be more expensive while one in six are buying as much ‘reduced to clear’ food as they can and one in 10 only buy foods that are on special offer. Most worryingly, around one in four Brits say they regularly

take vitamin supplements because they are unable to eat as healthily as they like or to supplement their diet. And almost one in five parents is jeopardising their own health to ensure their children have a nutritionally balanced diet while one in 10 is even skipping meals so their children eat well. Dr Dawn Richards, Head of Clinical Service at PruHealth, says: “We can clearly see how people’s healthy eating habits have been affected, with the picture having got significantly worse since the start of the economic downturn. “People are only too well aware of the need to eat healthily, but financial constraints are making it difficult, resulting in people’s health being negatively affected.” But eating plenty of fruit and veg doesn’t have to be expensive - there are lots of affordable ways to get your five-a-day - and save money.

Bridge seconds go second with Hatersage win Continued from back page.......................................... Ben Cherry was the next man out, being removed for two after a suspicious lbw decision. This brought Dave Smith to the crease and he and Price began to tick the score along. At 81-2 and after a steady partnership between the pair, Smith was removed for 24. Matt Price was the next key wicket to fall, after chipping a full toss straight back to the bowler for a well made 44.

With wickets falling and the overs slowly vanishing Stocksbridge fell 9 disappointing runs short of the total. It would have been a phenomenal victory but it was not to be. Many positives can be taken into next week game against high flying Hathersage at Bracken Moor.

OVER THE YORKSHIRE AREA

Youngster Elliot Freeman was looking comfortable with some early boundaries before the loss of Jack Murfin left Stocksbridge at 22-3 and in need of another batting recovery.

As previously this season the fourth wicket partnership got Stocksbridge back on track with Elliot Freeman and Ben Lyons putting on a superb 90.

After Freeman was dismissed for an excellent 39, Ben Lyons continued his explosive innings to collect his first senior half century brought up with a six.

GUEST HOUSE

As Lyons was rapidly closing in on a possible century, he was on 95 when he struck a lofted shot towards mid-on only to be caught on the boundary just short of his century. It was a superb innings from another of the great junior cricketers at Stocksbridge CC. The middle order continued the momentum with contributions from Tom Dobson, Luke Davis and Liam Grayson before Chris Thwaites and Adam Stubbs took the total beyond 200 to 214-9 and the second team has now scored 200 or more in every league game this season.

Sheffield Hawks 38-14 Wibsey IN an excellent team performance Sheffield Hawks under 16s took apart Wibsey in the first half, weathered a comeback and then clinically finished off a dispirited and fractious Wibsey team who could not cope with Hawks tactical nous and pace. Saul Hinchliffe opened the scoring forcing his way over after a well set up attack. Harry Scott was irrepressible throughout and solid control from Pat Wakefield varied the play throughout and meant that Hawks went into half time 20 points up. Wibsey, the current league leaders, had been played off the park. The half was ended by a fantastic 80 metre run from Reuben Kateregga, eventually dragged down a metre from the try line. The second half saw a spirited fight back by Wibsey who added three tries of their own.

However Hawks again played well, choosing their tactics wisely and scoring three more tries of their own. Bailey Thompson scored spectacularly from his own half, catching a ball on the fifth and outpacing the Wibsey defence to score under the posts. Reuben Kateregga added another spectacular try showing guile and strength to beat five players on his way to the post. When it mattered Hawks made the right choices and outplayed their opponents in every area of the pitch. Jack Ryan and Ryan Pellegrina hit hard as ever and had some strong runs.

Bank Holiday Monday was the date for a mixed competition for the Millenium Trophy. Unfortunately the fog descended and no one completed their round. This will have to be re-played at a later date. The Dragons competed for the Dragons Anniversary Trophy with a good field of 38 of the more senior gentlemen. This was won by Sandy Murphy with a four under par score of 61. Bob Haythorne was runner-up. Wednesday also saw Stocksbridge’s League Team in action at Sickleholme Golf Club in Bamford. It was a very creditable draw of four points each. This leaves them very handily placed after five of the 12 fixtures.

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels have announced manager Chris Hilton and his coaching staff will stay on at Look Local stadium.

Thursday saw both a gents and ladies stableford competition. Division one of the Gents was won by Phil Jepson with 37 points and division two by Brad Lawton with 38 points. Liana O Sullivan and Susan Clegg both had a creditable 18 points over the nine holes but Liana won on count-back. Better luck next time Sue.

After three years in charge, Hilton has overseen a continual improvement each season culminating in this seasons late promotion push. Assistants Ryan Laight, Lee Thompson, Nigel Hanks and physio Shaun Handisides will continue their good work.

The club also had representatives from England Golf who played along-side club members in a very enjoyable scramble.

Hilton has wasted no time in his teams preparations, signing the majority of last season’s squad

including striker Joe Lumsden, influential midfielder Richard Stirrup an brothers Matt and Dave Reay Steels have also confirmed the signing of Ryan Carroll. The 21 year old striker arrives from Maltby Main where he finished top scorer with 20 goals. “Ryan was one of our number one targets so we’re delighted to get him on board,” Chris Hilton told Non League Yorkshire. “He’s done really well at Maltby in the past two seasons and he fits the bill as to what we we’re

looking for. He’s big, strong and quick so we think he will be a great addition.” Summer friendlies Steels have announced the following summer home friendlies; Saturday 8 July 3pm KO SHEFFIELD UTD (1st team) Tuesday 18 July 7.45pm KO MANSFIELD TOWN (1st team) Saturday 29 July 3pm KO SHEFF WED

Stocksbridge first XI travelled to title chasing Hollinsend, looking to keep their good start to the season up. Captain Pete Broomhead lost his first toss of the season and Stocksbridge were made to field first. Jake Vickers and Joe Hibbert took the new ball and the pair, who have bowled so well the last few games, didn’t get off to the best of starts - with the Hollinsend openers scoring 30 off the first three overs.

Jim Tomlinson was once again the driving force in the middle overs and took an incredible four wickets in his first three overs to leave the 1st innings firmly in favour of Stocksbridge. However, a late rally from 96-8 to 142-9, and a little 10th wicket stand for Hollinsend would prove pivotal in the result .
