ARMED FORCES DAY IN the wake of the Tour de Yorkshire, yet another major event comes to our area on Saturday June 24. Armed Forces Day in Penistone is linked to national event and is an opportunity for the public, the business community and local government to show their support for British armed services past and present; their families and the cadets. It is estimated that 80% of us are directly linked to the armed forces since WWI and it could be said that the armed forces are in our DNA and part of what it is to be British. Dave, an ex Royal Navy Chef, told Look Local: “Armed Forces Day is a true ‘proud to be British’ celebration with a historical element including the Civil war, WWI and WWII.” Open to the public from 10.30am, the Armed Forces Day starts with a short parade of bagpipers and drums, cadets, veterans and military vehicles through Penistone at 11am. The military arena style show starts at 12 noon with the National Anthem followed with Military music, marching bands and public displays
including re-enactments and a firing of a 25lb field gun - you will be pleased to know that they will be firing blanks! At some point in the afternoon the mighty Lancaster Bomber will make a dramatic flypast. The showground will be packed with living history, veteran organisations and deactivated weapons. There will be plenty of photo opportunities and fun for the whole family and good food and drink. For the real ale lovers, Sheffield’s Stancill Brewery have brewed a special beer for Penistone Armed Forces Day and to honour HMS Sheffield that was sunk 35 years ago during the Falklands Conflict. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults with discounts for ex-forces and students. Under 15s gain free entry. Look Local are proud to support armed forces day and have 10 pairs of tickets to be give away. To be in with a chance of winning, simply send your name, address and phone number to news@ looklocal.org.uk by Sunday June 18. Names will be drawn at random.

Angela Smith and Gill Furniss kept their seats THERE were no changes to the MPs in the Stocksbridge and Penistone or Hillsborough and Brightside constituencies during last week’s election. Labour candidate Angela Smith kept hold of her Stocksbridge seat although it was a close result with Conservative Nicola Wilson taking 43.2% of the votes, a 15.5% increase from last time. Smith saw a slight increase of 3.8% to take the majority of 45.8%. She said: “I would like to thank the voters of Penistone and Stocksbridge for once again placing their trust in me and returning me to Parliament as their representative. I will now get to work representing everyone in our area, and hold the government to account.”

UKIP candidate John Booker took 4.1% of the votes with 3,453 – 16% less than last time. Penny Baker of the Liberal Democrats won 2,042 votes. In the Hillsborough and Brightside constituency, Gill Furniss, also of Labour, was a comfortable winner with 67.3% of the votes. In the Hallam constituency, which includes some villages in the north of Sheffield, saw Nick Clegg ousted by 35-year-old disability campaigner Jared O’Mara. The Labour candidate, who studied at Bradfield School was a surprise winner and leaves his job as a DJ and bar promoter to take up his role.
STOCKSBRIDGE landmark The Peggy Tub is set to become the town’s latest housing development. Following extensive discussions with the team at Coda Planning - experts in the development of residential projects throughout the country - Sheffield Council has approved plans for the redevelopment of the former social club in New Road, Stocksbridge. The once popular venue finally closed in 2015, the victim of changing times and drinking habits. The architectural design team at Coda Architecture has created plans for the development of ten three bedroom town houses, all with their own terraces and parking spaces. “This is a well known site in the heart of Stocksbridge and has been developed through a detailed and successful consultation process with Sheffield’s planning officers,” said Coda Planning’s William Marshall. “We believe that the final plans submitted and approved provide the best possible use for the site, providing much needed new housing stock for this growing community.”

DIGGING FOR HISTORY IN BOLSTERSTONE
BOLSTERSTONE Archaeology and Heritage Group came together to excavate the remains of the ‘castle’ on the green at Bolsterstone led by Colin Merrony and Wendy Goodhind between 2005 and 2008. Reused masonry around the village and placenames hinted at the location of a substantial building, perhaps a manor house, and the dig lo cated medieval domestic structures such as a bread oven and a circular structure. When the dig finished, people got involved in recording and studying the finds and were keen to carry on meeting, so a programme of talks and practical sessions was arranged. Another dig took place on the site of the Bolsterstone village smithy, led by Tim Cockrell. Since then the group have carried on having monthly meetings and doing other projects, such as helping Tim with a walkover survey of Whitwell Moor which identified some interesting features, fieldwalking in the Ewden valley and surveying a timber-framed barn at Watson House Farm. There are some outstanding archaeological sites to find out more about in this area – from the world-famous Deepcar Mesolithic camp above the river Don, where traces of a round house and
thousands of flints date back to somewhere between 7000 and 4500BC, to the fine little prehistoric stone circle above Ewden Beck, and one of the earliest glasshouses in England at Bate Green, producing top quality glass items which can be seen in the Heritage Centre in Stocksbridge Town Hall. The group is small but dedicated, and when the threat of closing down arose in 2016, they came together to talk about reinventing it and trying to encourage new members. They are now meeting every couple of months, with walks and visits to sites and excavations mixed in with the talks, and we hope to get some new projects going and get involved with inspiring schoolchildren with archaeology. At the moment they meet in the Christchurch Community Room, but any changes to venue will be advertised in Look Local. If you’d like to come and join the group, you’d be very welcome. Their next events are a walk around Bolsterstone on Wednesday June 21 meeting at 6pm outside the Castle Inn, looking at the history of the area, and a talk about Roman and earlier finds at Whirlow - ‘Britain’s Forgotten Frontier’ at 7.30pm on Wednesday July 19 at Christchurch.
Crimes in Stocksbridge over the last week THERE were a number of crimes committed in the Stocksbridge area over the past week. There was a burglary of a dwelling overnight last Tuesday between 10pm and 4.30am at Pen Nook Gardens with a euro lock being snapped. A vehicle and handbag with contents were stolen. There was the theft of a vehicle at More Hall Lane between 6pm and 6.30pm on Sunday June 11 after the car was left unlocked with the keys inside. A van was damaged on Hillcrest Road but the alarm sounded. An old shaped Renault Megane was seen driving away. Nothing was stolen.

School learns about democracy process with their own election
‘Recently fitted in Birdwell FINE REPUTATION UNBEATABLE VALUE NO OBLIGATION FULL BUILDING WORKS A WARM WELCOME THE children of High Green Primary School held their very own election in a project to discover how elections are run and why. It was a vital learning device for the children who developed an understanding of current world affairs and situations. Teachers say that the election in school has given the pupils knowledge of what each party is fighting for and how they want to benefit our country. Harriet represented Angela Smith of the Labour Party. She said: “I think it is a good idea because it helps children and me to understand why this is
happening.” Liberty, representing Nicola Wilson for the Conservative Party, said: “I think that it is a good idea because it has helped encourage others and myself to vote when I am older and the importance to vote.” Jake represented John Booker of UKIP. He added: “It has given me an understanding of the experience adults go through and what I will in the future.” Hannah, representing Penny Baker of the Liberal Democrats said: “I think it gives us a responsibility and the realisation of how voting can impact on the world around us.”

A NORTH Sheffield school is going all-out to raise funds for new playground equipment by bringing a taste of the great British Seaside to land-locked Chapeltown. On Saturday July 1 Windmill Hill Primary School will be opening up their doors and welcoming the community to come and enjoy donkey rides, a helter-skelter, ice-cream, candy floss and traditional seaside games like hook-a-duck. The great British fire service will also be bringing a fire engine and Sheffield Eagles rugby players will be there to pose for pictures. Organised by The Friends of Windmill Hill to raise money to purchase new equipment for the school playground, it is hoped the Fayre will raise over £2,000. Katy Davison, from Friends of Windmill Hill, said: "Our Summer Fayre is our biggest event of the year, but as well as raising money it's really important to us that we put on a fantastic event that families from all across north Sheffield and beyond can enjoy. "Last year's 'Brazil Olympics' summer fayre was a great success, but we are aiming for even bigger and better this year. The British seaside theme is so exciting with donkey rides, a helter-skelter, water based games such as a splash zone, sand-based games and traditional seaside games. All we need now is for the great British weather to be kind!" The Windmill Hill School summer fayre takes place on Saturday July 1 from 12pm to 3pm.

TDY team say ‘merci!’ to Woodhead Mountain Rescue
PENISTONE celebrated the Tour de Yorkshire in style when it came through the town in April when thousands came out to enjoy the entertainment that took place throughout the whole of the town. It was a huge success and a credit to the planning team which managed to capture the interest of the people of Penistone and the surrounding areas. The whole of the local community was involved with decorating the town with flags, banners, bikes, bunting and a huge T-shirt banner was hung by the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team. As a thank you to them, Penistone’s organising committee for the Tour de Yorkshire celebrations has generously donated over £400 from money raised on the day from events in Penistone. Nicholas Hoyland, the committee’s Chairman and Penistone
Agricultural Show Manager, handed over the cheque to team members Andy Simpson and Alan Knox. Director of the Woodhead team, John Smith, said: “This is a great boost to the team’s coffers and will help us continue to provide our essential local search and rescue service. “We played our part in the preparations for the day by fitting the large banner on St John’s Church in Penistone, which involved us abseiling down the tower to fit the banner and then again to take it down. “It was challenging and drew a bit of a crowd to watch us hanging off the tower, and the end result was quite impressive. “It was great to be part of the local community’s preparations and now to be rewarded for it is what you might call a ‘wheelie’ big bonus!”

Dear Ed, Looking out of my bedroom window this morning at 06.05am, I noticed (what appeared to be to me anyway) a very large grey heron standing on the roof ridge of a house in Armitage Road near the junction with Haywood Avenue. Indeed, it appeared to be taller than the nearby chimneystack which I estimate to be at least three feet tall. Unfortunately, before I could move to get my camera, the bird in question launched itself into flight with large wing span, flying below roof gutter level out of sight. So perhaps it had spotted something of interest in a nearby Garden? I’ve seen grey herons before both in flight and standing on the ground, at distance and close up; but this is the first time I can recall seeing one this big. Thus leading me to question as to the identity of the bird I saw. I was therefore wondering if any readers have spotted this bird about the parish and could let it be known via Look Local. A photo would be great! Yours faithfully, Michael Parker.

I do not agree with them, but I can understand the selling of a wrap around due to the premium price tag they must attract for a free paper. Advertising is vital for a free papers survival, but so is people’s willingness to read it. I do flick through the paper scanning for articles on my way to letters page as I or my opposition write in most weeks. Maybe I am biased, but a good vibrant letters page, will ensure a good readership in my opinion. Maybe a whole page should be dedicated to letters, with only one or two small adverts on that page, those adverts are bound to attract a premium price. If arguments are balanced and not allowed to be dominated by our red rosette brothers and sisters. Just a thought, do not ban me for sending it in.

In Memory
Thanks to everyone who helped On Friday May 26, I had an accident when my bike got caught in the tram tracks at Hillsborough corner dislocating my shoulder amongst other injuries. A lot of people helped me and I would like to thank them all. I was very shaken up from the accident so could not thank people at the time. Thanks to all the emergency services as well. Later I found that someone’s grocery shopping was mixed up with my bike. Could that person ring me on 07890 246604 so that I can reimburse the costs of the lost groceries.
Parkinson, Rebecca Rebecca’s family would like to thank everyone for attending the service and for the messages of sympathy, cards and donations received at their recent sad bereavement. A special thanks to Rev. James Grayson for his lovely service, Mrs Esther Beck for playing the organ and Ian, Fiona and colleagues at T. W. Birks & Son for their kindness and superb funeral arrangements.

Road signage As you drive towards Sheffield along Middlewood Road you will on the right hand side just before Langsett Avenue see a yellow sign pointing diverted traffic to the right up Langsett Avenue. Then on the left a red sign saying road closed ahead and an arrow pointing right up Langsett Avenue. Most drivers would surely assume that they were being diverted up Langsett Avenue and be somewhat surprised to find it closed. Alistair Nicoll

AS a nation we all enjoy eating out in restaurants, cafes and bars and Father’s Day is no different. It gives us the opportunity to have someone else cook, serve and allows us to try something new. We all enjoy trying something new and embracing different cultures and traditions. Restaurants in towns and cities across the UK are specialising in all types and styles of menus allowing us to sample exotic cuisines from across the globe.

A key benefit of eating in restaurants is that it provides the opportunity to try something that normally we wouldn’t cook or serve ourselves. As paying guests we all have certain expectations regarding quality and service within restaurants. Although generally service and quality over the decades has improved considerably if we are not satisfied we have the right to complain and demand improvements.
Looking for quirky extras this Father’s Day? CARDS – GRAPE VINES – PLANTS – GARDENING GIFTS – TERRARIUMS – HONEY
Everyone enjoys the sense of occasion and atmosphere of eating out, whether it be a family occasion or a romantic candle lit dinner for two. Making the effort to dine out is and always will be one of our favourite pass times and a way to mark Father’s Day. We’re lucky to have a great selection of pubs to take your dad to this Father’s Day. But if you want to treat your dad at home, maybe you could cook something for him? A great idea would be to fire up the BBQ. It’s June, hopefully the sun will be shining this Sunday! So what better way to celebrate than with a lovely family meal in the sun?
Pop in and have a nosey in our flower and gift shop.
A selection of good beefburgers and sausages from the local butcher, along with maybe some nice marinated pork or lamb chops would be a fantastic start. Add a nice fresh salad and you’ve got yourself a great, easy to prepare meal. And don’t forget to get a few beers – we’d suggest a mini-keg from Bradfield Brewery!

July is the month of high summer and the garden comes alive during hot lazy afternoons to the sound of bees buzzing, gathering pollen from all the plants that you have lovingly nurtured and cared for that are now in full flower. It’s the time of year that gardens or patios become an extension of our day-to-day living space as we use them for entertaining and relaxing in. When it comes to patios, the real plus side to them is that they are ideal for masses of pots of colourful summer flowers. These pots can then be extended through the Winter and into Spring with bulbs and Winter bedding to give your patio a longer lasting all-yearround appeal. Do remember though that the more containers you have, the more watering you will have to do during hot periods and the more dead heading and trimming you will need to do – but it’s definitely worth it. A great idea for patios is a small water feature - and if you’re short on time or space then a container pond is quick and easy to make. It creates a different dimension to any small space, bringing the cool, calming presence of still water to the garden, attracting lots of wildlife and giving you the chance to grow a whole new range of interesting aquatic plants. Simply fill a watertight container with rainwater, plant a mix of aquatic and oxygenator plants such as water lilies and water soldiers. Once the pond is set up it’s easy to look after - the plants keep the water crystal clear so other than an annual clean up there is very little to do. With everything now in full bloom, it may now be possible to cut flowers from your garden to have in the home and Dahlias are a popular choice for this. Their warm vibrant colours mean that they are often grown specifically as cut flowers and they regularly feature at local horticultural society shows due to their summer flowering. Originally from Mexico, Dahlias flower from July through to the first frosts in the Autumn and range from dwarf bedding varieties

to the popular giant flower heads that adorn gardens around the country. Dahlias thrive in any well drained soil and like plenty of sunlight but will need Winter protection in most parts of the UK.

It’s summer! The key to success for July is maintenance and good, effective watering. THROUGHOUT June Penistone and District Bowling Club will be hosting their annual open competition the Carling Cup each Saturday evening starting at 6.30pm. It’s a knockout competition with 16 bowlers, each night, from around the counties competing for places in the final on Saturday July 8. The bar will be open and hot and cold food will be served all night so why not come down and see what goes on. To complement these events a number of other things have been arranged. On Friday June 16, a members night is planned which will incorporate a club knockout competition for members. This is a special night and all drinks will be £2. Chip butties will be free to members entering the competition. Later in the month on Friday June 30, the club are holding a members and friends night. They are planning a doubles competition with a bowler paired with a non-bowler. The idea is that we have a bit of fun whilst introducing people to bowling and the club. If anybody would like to join in contact the club secretary Phil Vickers on 07966381194 or by emailing secretary@penistonebowling.plus.com

STOCKSBRIDGE CC second team had a visit to newly promoted Sheffield Super Kings CC at a damp Graves Park to continue their great early season form and picked up a fifth win from six games. Super Kings won the toss and asked Stocksbridge to bat on a damp green wicket. Openers Newton and Freeman had to concentrate and work hard on a difficult wicket to see off the opening bowlers. Freeman was then run out and that brought Jack Murfin to the crease who along with Bob Newton accelerated the run rate to get Stocksbridge to 50-1 before Newton was bowled. A partnership of 30 between Murfin and Lyons then another one of 60 between Murfin and Grayson lifted the innings to a respectable total of 156 when the innings closed with four overs left. This included a superb innings of 70 from Jack Murfin off 56 balls including four fours and five sixes. After an unbelievable tea the Super Kings innings started slowly and the breakthrough was made when Bob Newton took a stunning catch at the second attempt of the bowling of Adam Stubbs. Wickets then fell at regular intervals with scalps for Stubbs, Thwaites and Harris (2) with two great catches for youngster Rowan Brearley. This left Super Kings at 65-7 and in real trouble, then an explosive innings from the wicket keeper Bala in partnership with Maly lifted their total to 127-7 and a real chance of collecting a first win of the season. Then a bowling change brought Thwaites and Stubbs back into the attack and a thrilling finish to the game with Thwaites snatching two wickets and Stubbs the other to complete another win for Stocksbridge CC seconds. The first team were bowled out for 89 as they lost to Hathersage. Hathersage made 207 for nine but Jim Tomlinson did take three wickets for Stocksbridge. But Stocksbridge were unable to respond with Ben Cherry retiring injured on 24 as their top scorer.

T Trio of Penistone runners Village Cafe complete 15-hour run & garden CenTre he
EARLY on Sunday morning a dozen or so runners set off from Brampton with the aim of running some or all of the 73 mile long Barnsley Boundary route. Three runners from Penistone Footpath Runners, Gareth Cooke, Phil Hinchliffe and Robin Clough were determined to complete the whole boundary route and return to Brampton some hours later. The route is broken down in to 10 separate sections and support was fantastic with runners from all the main clubs in Barnsley running with the runners offering motivation as well as much needed food and drink. It was a long day for family and friends who provided support at the end of each section. The three Penistone runners achieved their goal with the light fading as they arrived in to Brampton absolutely exhausted after over 15 hours of running. The run was the idea of Gareth Cooke and it has already inspired others to take on the challenge.

Relay Race
Saturday saw the 24th running of the Annual Barnsley Boundary Relay Race, hosted by Penistone Footpath Runners. The route starts and finishes at Cannon Hall and involves ten different legs covering the 73 mile waymarked route of the borough boundary. This year saw a record entry of 34 teams, with the host club providing nine of these. In addition to teams from other local running clubs, there were two unaffiliated teams, one from Barnsley Council and one from Allendale Amblers. In terms of the competition, Penistone swept the board winning seven trophies, including a superb effort from the Men’s A team who became on the second team in the history of the competition to complete the route in under 8 hours. There were also victories for the Men’s V40 team, the Men’s V50 team, the Women’s A Team and Women’s veteran team and the Mixed A team. Credit goes to Simon Pike for juggling the 90 club members who took part into teams and making sure everyone got round in one piece.
