Fun run in memory of brothers A CHARITY Fun Run held in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes has raised more than £3,000. A total of 230 runners of all ages – ranging from three-years-old up to 61 - took to the hills above Penistone and doubled last year’s fundraising effort for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust. The trust is a new charity set up in Jack and Paul’s memory after they tragically died in October 2014 in a house fire started by their father. They were just 12 and nine. Heads Together helps families who have suffered a serious loss or trauma. The runners followed a 2km route setting off from Penistone Bowling Club on Sunday morning. Every runner was presented with a special engraved medal by Jack and Paul’s mum, Claire Throssell. One of the Fun Run organisers, Emma Stead, said: “We really have been overwhelmed by the way the community has embraced this event, it was a fantastic turnout and to more than double what we raised last year is just fantastic. “This is only the second year we have held the fun run and we are hoping that it will be a regular event in Penistone’s calendar.” Local businesses and organisations which supported the event include Penistone Bowling Club, Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley, The Trunce Off Road Race, Shepley Spring and BOS Office Supplies Limited.

ENGLAND STAR HAILS SUCCESS OF FOOTBALL ACADEMY ENGLAND football star Jamie Vardy has called his V9 Academy one of the highlights of his career.

Meridian Business Park, was the first to be signed up, with the 26year-old from Countesthorpe joining Stevenage.

The former Stocksbridge Parks Steels striker offered non-league footballers a chance to emulate his rise to the top of the game through the launch of his academy.

Now Lamar Reynolds has a twoyear contract at Newport County and Blair Turgot has also signed for League Two Stevenage.

Vardy, a non-league player as recently as 2012, added to one of the most remarkable stories in English football history in 2015 when he won his first England cap and equalled a Premier League record set by Manchester United’s Ruud Van Nistelrooy by scoring in 10 consecutive matches for his club, Leicester City. Now the former Fleetwood Town, Halifax Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels striker wants to help unearth more talent from English football’s lower levels and provide opportunities for those that, like him, have been dealt setbacks early in their careers. And the academy has been a success, with a number of the players being snapped up on professional contracts. Striker Danny Newton, who was working in a factory on the

Vardy told Sky Sports, who are filming a documentary of the V9 story: “When we first came up with the idea, I knew from my time in non-league there was a big pool of untapped talent going unnoticed. “The aim was to get 10 per cent of the players we worked with into the pro game, and we are now just one player away from hitting that target. “To think back to my time at Stocksbridge, if V9 had been around, I may not have spent nine years playing in nonleague,” he said. “I’m now hopeful that some of the clubs, scouts and players that were sceptical about what we set out to do are won over, not only by what we delivered for the players during the week itself, but the success stories that have followed.

get another opportunity despite his recent setbacks and Danny at a similar age to myself get a crack at the pro game - it’s amazing,” said Vardy. “It’s definitely a career highlight for me, that I’ve been able to help these guys, maybe inspire them a bit.” V9 provided a week-long residential training camp for selected players to work intensively in a professional club environment, with expert training provided by coaches that are currently or have historically worked at Football League and Premier League level. Players were evaluated technically, tactically, mentally and physically and educated in key areas such as nutrition, social behaviour and sports psychology. They were then provided with bespoke, individual development plans, providing a blueprint for future success in the game. Professional clubs from all levels were invited to observe sessions and watch competitive games that allowed players to showcase their talent.

“To see Lemar Reynolds jump four levels to League Two, Blair

Tributes to be paid for Armed Forces Day SHEFFIELD councillors will discuss the importance of our armed forces and comment on the success of the recent Armed Forces day on June 24 at Full Council next week. Armed Forces Day saw several events held in the city and the council will use next month’s Full Council meeting to discuss what more can be done to promote this event in the future, and to pay tribute to all of those serving, and who have served, in our armed forces. This year is particularly memorable for Sheffield as it marks the 35th anniversary of the Falklands War and the sinking of HMS Sheffield – which resulted in 20 service personnel losing their lives. Steve Wilson, a Labour councillor who proposed the motion to Full Council, said: “I served in the

armed forces and know many who were not as fortunate as I was - not all returned home like I did. “Events like Armed Forces Day are important so we can all show our gratitude to all of our service men and woman, past and present. “I wanted to put forward this motion to get the whole of the council to recognise the contribution of our armed forces, and I am sure that they will. “This Labour administration has been working hard to improve support to the local armed forces community, including a recent grant of over £180,000 which we successfully led a bid for from the Ministry of Defence’s Covenant Fund. “This will help with the integration of service life and civilian life, and I am sure our council will continue to work hard to ensure our veterans get the support they need.”

Hillsborough pilot scheme rolled out “It’s given me some confidence that there are things that I can do, that I can do it, and that there are opportunities out there.” That’s the view of a participant in the “Walking for Purpose” project, which after a successful pilot scheme in Hillsborough is now set to be rolled out across Sheffield.

Now On

Sheffield City Council has been successful in receiving funding from the Department for Transport to run Walking for Purpose for a further three years, and the project is now set to be launched on Wednesday July 5. Walking for Purpose aims to get people walking, moving more and enjoying a healthier lifestyle. In turn, this will help to reduce isolation, connect people to work opportunities in their communities, and enable participants to learn about training and volunteering. The scheme offers those who are looking for work the opportunity to gain valuable skills and training that employers want, while being active with a gentle walk. Participants are met at a local venue where friendly and approachable staff will walk with them to different training providers or workplaces.

2 Free Drawers

The Sheffield Hallam University research carried out following the pilot scheme concluded that “the combination of the different elements of the project - the led walks, business insight visits, masterclasses, and the support network and atmosphere created - was a unique combination and one which, for these unemployed people, made a real difference. “All aspects of the project, from the more formal talks and sessions, to the informal conversations and ‘having a laugh’ over tea and coffee, were valued by participants, and worked to sustain their participation in the programme - for many, much longer than the initially anticipated six weeks, and actually for the duration of the project. “All participants spoken to hoped that the project would be continued, and indicated that, if it were, then they would continue to attend until they found employment.” Anyone who is unemployed in Sheffield is welcome to take part in Walking for Purpose. The project has been developed in partnership with organisations including Reach South Sheffield, Tinsley Forum and Zest. Walking for Purpose will initially run in Gleadless Valley, Tinsley and the city centre, before being rolled out to different areas over the next three years. EMPIRE MEDAL FOR DEEPCAR LITTLE MESTER

STAN Shaw, the ‘little mester’ who makes worldfamous knives, has been presented with his British Empire Medal (BEM). The 90-year-old, who lives in Deepcar with his wife Rosemary, still works two days a week at his Kelham Island workshop and began his career 76 years ago. He asked for a job at Ibberson’s whilst picking through blitz rubble on West Street and went on to be trained by mentor Ted Osborne.

• Fully insured • NMC registered • Professional and Friendly • Confidentiality ensured at all times

He has a long waiting list for his top quality knives and has the following of a number of collectors all over the world, including Elvis Presley’s pianist Glenn Hardin.

He was nominated for the medal three years ago by friend Rob Burkinshaw and a number of people wrote letters of support, including Geoffrey Tweedale, Angela Smith MP, past Sheffield Master Cutler Chris Jewitt, former High Sherriff of South Yorkshire John Bramah and Professor Keith Ridgway CBE. He was shocked to learn of his inclusion on the New Year’s Honours list but has now been presented with his medal. HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew J Coombe presented Stan with his BEM at a swanky ceremony at Sheffield Town Hall.

The event is organised by The Friends of Windmill Hill to raise money to purchase new equipment for the school playground, money is still being counted but so far it is anticipated the fayre will raise over £2,000. Katy Davison, from Friends of Windmill Hill, said: “It takes a lot of volunteer time and effort to put the fayre together but when you see all the faces of kids having an amazing time it’s all worth it! “The weather came out beautiful and that just added to the authenticity of what was fantastic British seaside fun - even if it was in landlocked Sheffield!”

University of Third Age in Penistone BARNSLEY U3A is working with Age UK (Barnsley) on the creation of new interest groups in and around the Penistone area. So far, five new groups have been established with the potential for a number of others in the pipeline. In order to keep in touch with Penistone residents the U3A has set up a drop-in facility to allow

people to find out more about what is happening and what is on offer. The drop-in will be available on the first Thursday of every month for the next year commencing on Thursday August 3 at the St John’s Community Centre. Representatives of the U3A will be on site between 10am and 12pm on these days with the intention of answering questions and publicising the new and possible groups.

Anyone in the Penistone and surrounding area who is partially or fully retired is invited to call in at these sessions and find out more about what is happening. The new groups created to date include Crown Green Bowling, Crafty Chat, Quilting, Walking and a group which will be researching a particular period in history.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

That’s a noble sentiment and one I’m sure one we’d all agree with, but the fact is this. Turns out the money is actually being spent on renovating the community room that adjoins the rear of the Parish offices - a room used by local people and community groups. A decision that was taken after consulting with these groups themselves. Seems the money isn’t being spent on the offices of the Parish Council itself after all. More #FakeNews.

J&T Community Support

“You’re not alone.”

I stood in the Burncross Ward for the Parish Council in 2015 and to my surprise was elected. I have always considered the Parish Council as the closest council to the community not about party politics but about the good of the local community. Local community groups seek support from the Parish when needed and that’s what I did prior to my election when as secretary of the Thorncliffe Conservation Group we applied for funding.

There are times in our lives when we all need some extra support. We can help you get the support you need to get your life back on track! Struggling with poor mental health, getting through the benefit mine field, keeping your house in order or just going out? It’s not always easy to talk to family or friends. That’s when you need the support, hope and guidance of J&T Community Support.

I also, following on from a petition to keep the toilets in Chapeltown open attended each council session and politely asked for them to take over the running of these toilets. It took a year but the parish now maintain the toilets. My point is that there are systems in place for local groups to apply for funding. David Ogle and his friends don’t want to use the systems in place.

Got something to say?

I reckon this is more a case of sour grapes rather than any meaningful manifestation of indignation. Sour grapes in that the monies were not directed towards projects and schemes favoured by the proponent/s of the e-petition themselves. As I say, storm in a paint pot.

If that is the case, how could it be argued that using the money to renovate a community room in High Green itself, that is used by local people and the local community (those words again) as a meeting space - how is this not using the money for the specific purpose of improving the well being of local people’s lives as outlined above?

Cllr Alison Gethin

I’ve seen much talk about a ‘covenant’ applied to proceeds raised from the sale of the Chadwick building. Thank you to ‘AB Skate Park Highgreen’ (sic) for providing an extract of what they suggest to be the actual covenant itself, for all to see on social media (image attached). If indeed this is the document, it does clearly say that proceeds of the sale must only be used: “for the purpose of promotion or improvement of the economic, social or environmental well being of the local High Green community”.

They have been advised to set up a group and

Str8ts STR8TS STR8TS

apply for funding but so far they haven’t done this. Instead they come to every Parish meeting and film the proceedings. When things don’t go their way they have shouted, aggressively and I personally feel their attitude to be threatening and totally unnecessary.

At the Parish meeting in question where the vote in question took place, were there any UKIP councillors in attendance? Did any UKIP councillors object to/vote against these plans to use local monies, to improve local facilities, which are used by local people and local community groups? If they did object, I’d be genuinely interested to hear their reasons for doing so.

for causes, but on taking a look at this attempt at cutting edge, local democratic participation, it’s clear to me (and many others no doubt) it’s just the latest in a long line of red herrings - designed among other things simply to bang the drum, to try and maintain some degree of relevance locally for parties and individuals, who indulge in one particular shade of our political spectrum. A need for relevance made even more pertinent by the collapse of their support nationally in the first of this year’s general elections.

New Deacon for Owlerton church SIX new priests and 11 new deacons have been ordained in services held at Sheffield Cathedral this weekend, including one who is to serve at St John the Baptist Church at Owlerton. The service for 11 deacons took place on Sunday July 2 when they were ordained by the Bishop of Doncaster, the Rt Revd Peter Burrows in front of a packed Cathedral. Church of England candidates who are called to ordained ministry are presented to their bishop at this time of the year at special services. For their first year following the ordinations, the candidates are known as deacons. They will serve in parishes around the Diocese of Sheffield for 12 months before being presented again for

ordination to the priesthood in 2018. Joy Elizabeth French was among them and will now go to the church in Owlerton. Also over the weekend, six people who were made deacons in 2016 were ordained as priests. These have now served for one year in parishes throughout the diocese. The services were carried out by the Bishop of Doncaster and the Bishop of Beverley, Glyn Webster. All of the services included readings, hymns and music to reflect the joy and solemnity of the occasion. They were joined by family, friends and representatives of the congregations in which they will serve.

Fire service says flood response improved THE fire service says it is better placed to respond to flooding in South Yorkshire, as the tenth anniversary of floods which devastated the county in 2007 is marked. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) formed a major part of the response to floods which hit the region on June 25 2007 and damaged nearly 1,500 homes in less than 24 hours. Two people also sadly lost their lives. Emergency services took more than 4,500 calls and the fire service committed all of its available resources to help those in need. Thirty high-volume pumps from across the UK also came to help

the relief effort, pumping away thousands of litres of water in badly hit areas, including Bentley and Toll Bar. Officers say specialist training, regular exercises and new equipment mean it is better placed to an incident on this scale. Nationally, operational guidance for fire services responding to flooding has also been improved. SYFR now has motorised water rescue boats and fully trained water rescue teams, ready to respond to water related incidents in the county. It also has its own high-volume pump, which is capable of pumping water at a rate of 8,000 litres per minute.

Head of Emergency Response, Area Manager Tony Carlin said: “I’m sure we all remember only too well the devastation caused by the 2007 floods. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue committed significant resources at the time and our firefighters provided vital support to local communities. Our crews will never forget the community spirit they witnessed in areas that had been devastated by the flood waters. “We have enhanced our response capabilities to incidents of this nature since then and have also provided support to other parts of the country af-

fected by flooding, including Somerset, Berkshire and Lancashire. “Flooding remains a significant risk to South Yorkshire, plus other parts of the country, and those living in risk areas should familiarise themselves with information designed to keep them safe in an emergency.” For more information on a Government backed flood awareness campaign, visit https://floodsdestroy.campaign.gov.uk/

68-point thriller Sheffield Hawks 30 Lambwath Lions 38

In a season that has seen its fair share of excitement, Sheffield Hawks were unlucky to suffer defeat after a match that, for the neutral, had everything. Hawks were playing well in patches against a team that were clinical in their finishing and had a share of good luck. Hawks thought they had opened the scoring through Tom Griffith, touching down from dummy half. The referee called held up and from the resulting set the Hull team scored. Another try followed when a vicious bounce from a kick went straight to a Lambwath player. So far, so familiar. However Hawks picked dup the pace and Reuben Kateregga scored a dazzling individual try from 40 metres out after excellent support from Ryan Pellegrina and Jack Ryan had Lambwath on the back foot. Two tries from Lambwath took the score to 22-6 and the match was looking tough as half time approached. Hawks spirit and drive took them back in it with a bruising try from To Clarke, again the result of good set up play and simple, effective running. Half time was called with hawks still in the game. The first score after the break needed to be Hawks and Jack Ryan duly delivered, after some quick thinking by Robert Harden. Hawks were playing well until a missed touch from a penalty allowed Lambwath to drive up the field and score. Bailey Thompson again drove in strongly, as he has done all season, to score in the corner. From the kick off poor communication resulted in a 22 drop out and from the resultant kick Lambwath scored. Hawks again upped their pace and drove back at the Hull team with Harry Scott crossing after powerful drives by the forwards made 40 metres in two plays.

This took the score to 30-38. The Hawks kicking from the tee was outstanding, less so in open play, but the match ended with Hawks again unfortunate to be on the losing side. Objectively, two simple errors gave the Lambwath team the extra points. Playing with 12 men for 15 minutes (after injury to Will Burns) saw Hawks fight hard and they were desperately unlucky to lose a fantastic match. The team were a credit to themselves and their supporters.

Tigers slip to heavy defeat SHEFFIELD slipped to their heaviest defeat of the season as they went down 55-37 at Glasgow. The Tigers never recovered from a slow start, which saw them concede heat advantages in all four of the opening races, and were able to register just four heat wins all night. Despite losing Josh Bates earlier in the day through illness, team boss Simon Stead says being a man down had nothing to do with the result and offered no excuses for his side’s performance. Lasse Bjerre and Josh Grajczonek scored 26 of the Tigers’ 37 points with the other four members of the team managing just 11 between them. There is no action at Owlerton this Thursday; the Tigers head to Workington in the SGB Championship on Saturday July 8.

Defeat for Stocksbridge after batting collapse STOCKSBRIDGE’S first XI were back in action as they travelled to high-flying Parkhead, looking to amend last weeks defeat. On a damp track, captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and elected to field first. As it had been the case all season, Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers took the new ball and the pair got Stocksbridge off to a flyer. Hibbert struck first, removing the Parkhead opener for one after a brilliant catch from Oliver Warren at mid-wicket. Vickers was next to strike as he removed the big wicket of the Parkhead captain caught behind by Jack Newton for eight. The first were off to a flyer! Hibbert continued the great start as he picked up two wickets in two consecutive balls leaving Parkhead 12-4. Vickers continued to plug away at one end as Jim Tomlinson came in to the attack. However, his first three balls were hit for a six, a four and then another huge six as Parkhead begin to pull the game back. Vickers picked up his second wicket and then it was over to Tomlinson to rip through the rest of the Parkhead batting order. Tomlinson, pulled backed his figures superbly well and picked up figures of 5-53 off his 12 overs.

Parkhead were bowled out for a disappointing 139, it was a brilliant first innings performance from the first XI. Opening pair Matt Price and Oliver Warren took to the crease looking to get Stocksbridge off to a flyer. Warren took on the Parkhead attack as he raced to 20 with back to back boundaries, however he was then removed leaving the visitors 27-1 off six overs. Matt Price anchored and stuck around and his reluctance to give his wicket away left the Parkhead bowlers frustrated. However, the game was to turn very quickly. A middle order collapse saw the game slip away from Stocksbridge. Matt Price brought up a well deserved 50 up as he battled on in vain. Unfortunately though he was removed for a brilliantly made 52 and no one could stick around to get the Stocksbridge over the finish line. They were eventually bowled for 122, 18 runs short of the target. Another devastating defeat, however still many positives coming from it. They entertain De La Salle Saturday looking to get back to winning ways. SECOND TEAM Stocksbridge CC’s second team were at home to last week’s opposition Telecom Sports second team who had a much changed and strengthened line up. Stocksbridge lost the toss and were asked to bat.

After the early loss of opener Elliot Freeman there was a 59 run partnership between Bob Newton and Ant Siddall before Siddall was run out for 28. The rest of the innings was dominated by Bob Newton with partnerships with Liam Grayson and Jack Lyons before he was bowled just short of a century for a brilliant 97. A late flurry of runs from Chris Thwaites and Mark Wingfield took Stocksbridge to a total of 203-8. Telecom Sports innings started with the loss of the opener in the first over who was caught by Ant Siddall off the bowling of Chris Thwaites. Thwaites continued his great form this by taking another two wickets in his hostile opening spell. Opener Shaik and middle order batsman Walton put a useful partnership together and threatened to chase down the total before Liam Grayson came into the attack to slow down the run rate and claim the wicket of the dangerous Shaik for 80 with a brilliant catch from Mark Wingfield. Thwaites also returned into the attack to claim his first five for of the season with incredible figures of 11-6-11-5. Whilst Grayson finished the innings with the final wicket to end up with excellent figures of 10.3-2-30-3. Another great win for Stocksbridge second team who remain top of the table and travel to Chesterfield CC thirds next week.

Captain’s Day at Stocksbridge

SATURDAY June 24 was Stocksbridge Golf Club’s Captain’s Day. This is a tradition to thank the club captain Mick Meegan for his work in the year and a chance for him to share the day with family, friends and sponsors.

GOLDEN GUYS: The winning V60 South Yorkshire Road Relay Team - Steve Storey, Kelvin Bowskill and Bill Phillips SEVENTEEN teams from Penistone Footpath Runners took part in the Dam Flask Road Relays last week, an event which also incorporated the South Yorkshire Road Relay Championships. The V60 team of Steve Storey, Kelvin Bowskill and Bill Phillips struck gold, coming first in their category on the night. Also bringing home medals were the V40 team of John Broom, Rob Lees, Matt Robinson and Robin Clough and the F45 team of Dawn Broom, Julie Darigala and Julie Moxon.

The senior men’s team of Scott Hinchcliffe, Chris Law, Gareth Cooke and Andrew Heppenstall finished fifth overall against some stiff competition. Two runners took part in the Spire 10 at Chesterfield, a challenging course running through the North Derbyshire countryside. John Broom finished in 66:23 and Mark Riordan in 69:24. Nick Whittingham completed the Chevy Chase, a 20 mile route up Cheviot and Hedgehope, finishing 106th in a time of 4:22.21.

The club hosted the Thurlstone Chase a four-mile fell race. The race was won by Scott Hinchcliffe, with the winning men’s team being Hinchcliffe, Lee Storey and Richard Mackie. Mackie was also first V40, Barbara Haigh was first F70, Alan Knox first V60, Julie Darigala first F40 and Sue Higham first F60. Majika Kunicka finished first lady at the Blackfell Race, breaking the course record in the process in a time of 1:44.23.

The day is always opened by the raising of the club flag by the Captain and a toast with champagne with many members attending. A magnificent turnout of 114 club members and many guests and family contested for the many prizes on a bright and breezy day. There were some tremendous scores with the Captain’s Cup going to Richard Grimmer with a terrific 44 Stableford points. A prize for best gross score presented by professional Roger Broad went to Liam O’ Sullivan. Division One winner was Dave Phillips on 41 points with Trevor Moseley runner up. Division Two winner was Brian Montgomery on 43 points and runner up Allen Burrows. Nearest the pin on hole 13 was Eric Wilkinson and nearest the line on hole 12 was Andy Tingle. The prize presentation was on Saturday evening with packed club house, to show their appreciation of Captain and winners. Sunday saw a Ladies competition for a very old trophy, The Ladies Veteran’s Brassie. This was won

by Bev Sykes on 42 points. It was a close run thing for second place with Lady Captain Kath Busfield pipping Margaret Pearson by one point. A small field of gents (probably due to the exertions of playing and celebrating Captains day) played for the Pro’s Prize. This was won by Steve Clayton on 41 points. Steven Haigh came a close second by just one point. Wednesday was a complete washout and so there was no Dragons competition. Thursday was not much better but Phil Jepson won the Midweek Stableford. Two pairs of ladies from Stocksbridge braved poor weather to compete at Hickleton Golf Club in the South Sheffield region qualifier of the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association. Sixty-one pairs from all over the area were represented with the top 10 going through to the Yorkshire Final. Qualifying in ninth place were mother and daughter pair of Hilja and Lianna O’ Sullivan. Also qualifying were Ladies Captain Kath Busfield and Margaret Pearson, coming a terrific second only on count back to a pair from Hallamshire GC. Well done to both pairs from Stocksbridge and Good Luck in the final at Brough GC in August.

More success for Birdwell Wheelers A BUSY couple of weeks saw a number of successes for members of Birdwell Wheelers. Wednesday June 21 saw Trevor Mayne ride the Peak RC 17 Mile Open Time Trial on one of his favourite courses, the hilly circuit of Longstone Edge. His time of 47.36 was good enough for eighth overall and third veteran.

Local Sport

On Sunday he followed this up with a fine second place overall in the Holme Valley Wheelers 10 Mile Open Time Trial on the local sporting course from the Sovereign to Hoylandswaine and back. His time of 23.24 was only 24 seconds behind the winner Blair Buss of Team SSLL. Saturday saw Wheelers Dan Taylor and Paul Mason ride the Halifax Imperial 10 Mile Open Time Trial at Boroughbridge on the old A1. Taylor’s time of 54.58 placed him fifth, his fifth top five placing of the season while Mason’s time of 56.32 left him just 11 seconds shy of a first ever top 10 finish.

ERNEST THORPE

The next day Dave Scargill rode in the LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists) National Road Race Championship at Alresford in Hampshire.

NO bOOkiNg required

On the tough 54 mile race with over 5,000 feet of climbing Scargill finished eighth overall at an average speed of just less than 20mph. Also on Sunday Wheeler Paul Heggie rode in the CTT (Cycling Time Trials) National 50-mile Championship at Stockton. Strong winds developed during the race and Heggie finished in 2:11.08 for 86th place overall and second of four in the 60-64 age group. Tuesday’s first of seven 10 Mile Club Time Trials saw Dan Taylor come out on top again in a time of 21.40. More details on this and all the above can be found on the club website

BIGGINS LEAVES FOR FLEETWOOD

HARRISON Biggins, Stocksbridge Park Steels’ star player in this season’s late promotion push, has joined League One outfit Fleetwood Town. The goal-scoring midfielder, who netted 19 times this season, has spent the last three seasons at Look Local Stadium after being released by Barnsley FC at the age of 18. Manager Chris Hilton told Look Local: “Harrison has been terrific this season like all of the squad and has really progressed in the three seasons here at Stocksbridge. “He has been head and shoulders above any other player in the league this season and not only scores but creates goals.” Talking about his prospects in league football, Hilton continued: “He has a great attitude and work-rate. He is prepared to put in the hard-work on and off the pitch. We wish him all the best. “Hopefully he can follow in the footsteps of Jamie Vardy and like any other young player at Stocksbridge we are pleased to help in their development.” Harrison has footballing pedigree. His father, Wayne, made over 450 football league appearances, most notably for Norwich City and Manchester City. Wayne also played and managed Stocksbridge Park Steels between 1998 and 2003. The 21-year-old from Oughtibridge, who currently helps out with his father’s pallet business, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of former Steels favourite Jamie Vardy who also played for Fleetwood Town. Chairman Allen Bethel commented: “He’s different to other midfielders in that he can score lots of goals, he loves playing football. We are proud to be part of Harrison’s journey and wish him all the best.” Harrison joins an ever-growing list of former Steels players making the grade at professional level. These include the likes of Jamie Vardy of Leicester City and England, Scott Hogan of Aston Villa, Jack Muldoon who plies his trade at Lincoln City, George Maris of Cambridge United, Lee Mills who plays for Wolves and Ross Hannah at Bradford City.
