PENISTONE SWIMMER BREAKS RECORD A SWIMMER from Penistone was part of a team that broke the record for a threetime relay crossing of the English Channel last week.
Nikki Fraser, 24, was the youngest of six swimmers that took part in the challenge, raising money for two charities in the process. It isn’t the first time she’s been involved in a challenging swim, she crossed the Irish Sea as part of a team that featured pop star Ronan Keating when she was 19. With Cancer Research UK, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the MS Society having already benefitted from Nikki’s swimming, it was the turn of the British Heart Foundation and Headway this time.
RECORD BREAKERS: Nikki with her team and, right, swimming in the English Channel
Natalie Massey. Dee was the oldest of the group at 39 and took part just five months after giving birth. A boat followed the swimmers along the journey with five of them in the boat and one swimming.
When one swimmer began to tire, the next would swim behind them and catch them up to relieve them of their duties, much like in a relay foot race. Nikki, who has just finished a veterinary degree at the University of Liverpool, told Look
Local: “We swam the English Channel three times - to France, back to England and then back to France - in a time of 31 hours and 20 minutes, breaking the world record by one hour and 11 minutes! “We swam over 75 miles and had to battle high winds, strong tides and hundreds of jellyfish to complete this swim. We then found out that we also beat the men’s world record by a few minutes. “We are raising money for the British Heart Foundation and Headway.
These charities are close to our hearts as three of our team members have needed help from the BHF in the past, as well as our pilot Andy King. “I just love swimming. We were confident in our ability but if the tide isn’t right, not even the strongest swimmer can swim against it.”
Nikki already has her next challenge in her sights. “As an individual, I’d like to swim Loch Lomond. It’s the same length as the channel but it’s colder.”
The team was completed by Jane McCormick, Lucy LloydRoach, Emma Ross, Dee Llewellyn-Hodgson and Paralympian

Play comes to The Venue ‘ON Behalf of the People’ – a new play by Ray Castleton comes to The Venue, Stocksbridge, on July 20. It is a rich, engaging story of a post-war mining family coming to terms with their rapidly changing world and lives, commissioned by the National Coal Mining Museum. We follow miner George Mason and his wife Connie, parents to their returning solider son Tom, and his fiancée Liz, from the immediate aftermath of the war through the enormous social and political changes over the next few years which has a direct effect on them, their relationships and community. The play has been created as part of the National Coal Min-
ing Museum’s exhibition and activities marking 70 years since the nationalisation of the UK coal mining industry in 1947, and is a new and unique way of spreading the word of untold coal mining stories. The play, written by Ray Castleton, is based on his extensive research and the true stories of those who lived through the period. Through the Mason family ‘On Behalf of The People’ reveals how millions of people in mining communities in this country were affected by the end of the war, coal nationalisation and the huge period of social change which impacted on their lives, love, hopes and dreams. The play is laced with dry, northern humour and a sense of realism and seeks to
keep stories of coal mining alive through all generations. Speaking about writing and researching the play, Ray Castleton said: “When I was asked to write a play about the nationalisation of the mining industry I knew it had to be about the people not the politics. To understand our history, it’s best to reveal it through the eyes and lives of those it affected the most – the workers and their families. Some of the content of the play is based on my own family’s true stories and also those of former miners who lived through the period and their sons and daughters.” The play starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £8 each. Contact The Venue for tickets.

In the past five years, since the beginning of the contract, maintenance work of varying degrees has been undertaken on Sheffield’s 419 highway bridges and 203 footbridges. Strengthening work on Smithy Bridge in Low Bradfield enabled local farmers and businesses to continue with their working day and pass over the bridge in heavy farming vehicles that prior to the works being completed, had been prohibited. Cllr Victoria Talbot of Bradfield Parish Council said: “The strengthening of Smithy Bridge has enabled the local farmers and workers to get around the area efficiently and continue with their everyday work. “Even during the works, locals were able to pass over the bridge safely and they spoke to the Streets
Ahead operatives regularly who reassured them of their day to day plans. “The safety and continued maintenance of this bridge is extremely important to the local area and we’re really grateful that Streets Ahead has been able to complete these vital works with minimal disruption.” The work on Smithy Bridge involved installing steel reinforcing bars into narrow slots cut into the stone arch barrel. This method of strengthening was undertaken without the need to close the road resulting in minimal disruption to traffic as well as an increase in the bridges’ capacity for heavy loads. The Bradfield area, which is popular with local ramblers, continues to welcome walkers who use the bridge regularly to cross the waterway leading off from the Damflask reservoir.

Choir's charity golf A blending of brass and electronic music day a successs
Choir chairman Mick Siddall (third from left) presents a cheque to John Friend, of St Luke’s, flanked by golf day organisers John Siddall (far left) and Brian Pigott BOLSTERSTONE Male Voice Choir’s Golf Day on Friday July 7 raised £1,310 for St Luke’s hospice in Sheffield.
Lazenby, second were choir chairman Mick Siddall’s team and third were John Siddall’s four.
The successful day at Stocksbridge Golf Club was blessed with sunshine and ended with a concert by the choir, an auction and raffle in the evening.
Dransfield Properties, the Fox Valley developers, gave £1,000 for the golf prizes, local businesses sponsored the 18 holes and there were a wide range of prizes donated for the auction conducted by the choir’s former chairman Frank Milnes.
First prize for best golfers was won by the foursome led by the golf club’s green-keeper Wayne
The event was organised by choir committee man John Siddall and choir top tenor Brian Pigott in his 22nd successive year of hard work for the golf day. On the day help was given by choir baritone Horace Boothroyd and choir vice-president Gordon Webster, of Castle Farm, Bolsterstone, who also sponsored two holes.
SATURDAY July 15 at the SHU Hubs in Sheffield sees the culmination of three years’ work for Loxley Silver Band with their PRS for Music Foundation and Norman Jones Trust funded BINARY BRASS_ project collaboration with renowned electronic music composer Barry Gilbey.
Gilbey is an accomplished composer in his own right holding credits with Universal, Fox and the BBC to name a few. His sound is a hybrid of electronic and organic instruments hailing back to his years as an international DJ, touring the world with residencies in Russia, USA, Lithuania and the UK.
It was September 2014 when Stuart Young, the secretary and marketing manager of Loxley Silver Band, and Barry Gilbey first got their heads together and came up with the idea to blend their two genres together.
As a result of Stuart and Barry’s initial idea, Loxley Silver Band commissioned Gilbey to compose five new pieces for traditional brass band, crossing genres into popular music. These were arranged by the internationally acclaimed brass band arranger, Darrol Barry, and recently recorded by the band at The Foundry studio in Sheffield.
A frequently sought-after consultant to the music industry with recent panel appearances at the BPI and PRS, Barry Gilbey is currently exercising his executive skills at DEFDISCO, a forward-thinking record label he founded with Cliff Simms (EMI) and design agency D4.
Stuart said: “It has been a very long and difficult journey, but we have had the support and belief in this unique project from so many people, especially
our own Musical Director, Lee Dunkley.” To coincide with event at the SHU Hubs, the recorded tracks will be released digitally on Bandcamp together with Barry’s electronic originals and, in a couple of weeks’ time, the fully mastered tracks will also be available on iTunes. To add to the BINARY BRASS_ proceedings on Saturday, Loxley Band are pleased to confirm that Simon Cowan, principal trombone with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, will also join them as guest soloist with the supporting programme and be participant in the Gilbey pieces. Tickets for the event are available online via the band’s website and their social media feeds.

Cat fouling on Hillcrest Road I would like to appeal to cat owners on Hillcrest Road to take steps to ensure that their cat is encouraged to us a litter tray instead of fouling their neighbour’s gardens. Over a number of weeks I have attempted by humane methods, to discourage the cats from regularly using my garden as a toilet, with no appreciable success. Had I, as a dog owner, allowed my dog to do the same I am certain my neighbours would quite reasonably have been angry. Why then do cat owners not accept the same responsibility in controlling their pets? The main two culprits are a small tabby and a black cat with small white markings and wearing a collar, both of which have been observed.

Remembering what would have been our 45th wedding anniversary 15 - 7 - 2017 Love and miss ya so much Tez Always in my thoughts Forever in my heart Ang X unbreakable love
MAUREEN NIXON 17th July 1997
20 long years since you left us Mum. We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you in silence, we often speak your name. All we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping. We have you in our heart. Love and miss you always Sue, Michael, Adam, Anna and partners Wez, Chantelle, Jamie, Gianna, Mia and all the Great Grandchildren.
Name the Bear winner announced A GRASS panda bear which has been installed at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge has been named Bamboo after a special competition to find a name for the centre’s new visitor. Dozens of youngsters wrote in to the Fox Valley team to come up with names for the bear which stands more than 6ft tall and was installed in the piazza area of the award winning centre in time for the first birthday celebrations in June. Youngsters could post their suggestions at Sandersons Department store and at JoJo Maman Bebe – the judges chose the suggestion of Bamboo which came from six year old Jessica from Stocksbridge. Jessica won a goodie bag filled with Jojo Maman Bebe goodies including a cuddly bunny and a colouring activity set. Jessica said: “I chose the name Bamboo the Bear because she is sitting on the grass and eating bamboo!” Centre Manager Annabel Plumtree said: “The ladies at our Jojo Maman Bebe store loved looking through all of the fantastic name suggestions for our new friend but Jessica’s stood out as the perfect choice for our bamboo-eating bear. “She is certainly a popular addition to the centre and the children love coming down to have their photographs taken with her.” Bamboo the Bear sits on the grass banking outside of Central Bean café in the fountain area- be sure to stop and have a selfie with her!

Good Food & Drink
AS a nation we all enjoy eating out in restaurants, cafes and bars. It gives us the opportunity to have someone else cook, serve and allows us to try something new.
However, as with everything, there are pros and cons with restaurant dining which are worth exploring. With our daily lives getting busier as the years role on, convenience and time saving measures are more and more important to us. Having someone cook for and serve you removes the worry of going to the supermarket and spending time preparing meals. Eating out allows us to continue with our hectic schedules whilst still satisfying our culinary appetites.
S35 7AE Sheffield
We all enjoy trying something new and embracing different cultures and traditions.

Cote Lane, Thurgoland, S35 7AE 0114 283 1630
Restaurants in towns and cities across the UK are specialising in all types and styles of menus allowing us to sample exotic cuisines from across the globe. A key benefit of eating in restaurants is that it provides the opportunity to try something that normally we wouldn’t cook or serve ourselves. As paying guests we all have certain expectations regarding quality and service within restaurants. Although generally service and quality over the decades has improved considerably if we are not satisfied we have the right to complain and demand improvements. This key benefit should result in a consistent standard and value for your hard earned cash. Everyone enjoys the sense of occasion and atmosphere of eating out, whether it be a family occasion or a romantic candle lit dinner for two. Making the effort to dine out is and always will be one of our favourite pass times and a way to mark an anniversary, birthday or celebration.

Young Charlie rounds off top week for Stocksbridge golf ON Saturday July 1, Stocksbridge Golf Club’s competition was for the Les Edwards Trophy and also counting towards the club Championship. A great field of 91 players turned out with 20 on nett par or below. The magnificent condition of the course obviously played its part in the good scoring but credit to the players. Peter Finney came in third place with the best gross score of 64. In second place was Matt Sedgewick with a nett score of 61 but winner on the day with a magnificent nett score of 59 (seven under par) was Paul Ryan. The ladies’ competition the following day was for the Jubilee Trophy. Winner was Lianna O’ Sullivan on one under par with her mum Hilja in second place just one shot behind. Gents medal winner was Chris Walker with a nett 62, runner up was Dean Meegan also on 62 but behind on countback. Wednesday saw the Dragons take part in a threeman team competition for the Barry Hough Scramble Trophy. Again the course condition helped towards some great scoring with all ten teams separated by just five shots. In second place with a nett score of 60 were John Sykes, Horace Boothroyd and Dick Pittaway. The winners on 58.9 was the team combined of Dragon’s Captain Les Wright, Bob Mason and Tony Wright.

Jake Vickers hit 60 not out. Pic: Ian Revitt. Right: Stocksbridge under nines Stocksbridge 154-7 (Jim Tomlinson 60* & Matt Price 32) De La Salle 158-6 COMING off the back of consecutive defeats against league leaders Parkhead, Stocksbridge’s first string were desperate to get back to winning ways against De La Salle up at Bracken Moor. Captain Broomhead won the toss and elected to have a bat in what seemed batting friendly conditions. Despite this, the game didn’t quite go to plan as Stocksbridge found themselves 29-5 off 20 overs. With wickets tumbling at the other end, opener Matt Price dug in for a respectable 32 in an attempt to resurrect the innings with the help of Steve Perry (11). However, both were out in quick succession leaving the 1St XI 73-7. In came Jim Tomlinson, who with the support of Andy Hibbert (15*) before he retired hurt and Jake Vickers (8*), smashed his way to an unbeaten 60 to enable Stocksbridge to reach a respectable 154 which was a remarkable turn around following the start they had. De La Salle required a below par score of 155 to win however Stocksbridge felt that they were in
with a good chance of defending the total, despite Illingworth-Ralph hit at least four sixes over her two innings and Felix Tomlinson and Beau Roehaving a depleted bowling line up. buck both hit numerous fours. Charlie Cundy, Tom Stocksbridge were missing regular bowlers and the Perry, Charlie Crossland and Jake Ward all conbowling line up consisted of veteran Colin Vick- tributed too, taking wickets, catches and run outs ers who had come out of retirement to play and an between them. Congratulations to all the team for injured Andy Hibbert. Jake Vickers and Jim Tom- their fantastic performance. A huge thankyou to all linson shared the new ball and picked up a wicket the team and their families for their hard work and each. Colin Vickers and Andy Hibbert then came effort over the season. into the attack and picked up two wickets each to reduce De La Salle to 95-6 to put Stocksbridge on Stocksbridge CC will be hosting the under nine top. However, the De La Salle batsmen rode their cricket finals day on Sunday July 16 at 2pm, come luck with mis-hits just vacating fielders as well as along and see who will lift the trophy for the 2017 both batters being dropped numerous times to see season. A BBQ, bar, cakes and refreshments will be the away side home however the first XI will have available on the day at Bracken Moor. felt they still could have won the game despite being a long way from their best. The second team’s pursuit of the title took a hit as they lost to Chesterfield. Next week the first XI travel to Crimicar Lane to face Hallam looking to start climbing back up the table who after a wonderful have won just one in the last six. The second XI will look to go back to the top of the league as they entertain Sheffield Civil Service at Bracken Moor. A brilliant end to the season for the under-nines STOCKSBRIDGE CC under nines celebrated a fantastic win on the last day of the season. Martha
Hawks learn lessons away to Lions Lambwath Lions 24-14 Sheffield Hawks THIS experience away in Hull saw Lambwath Lions nullify the Hawks team by fair means and foul. Hawks have to accept that Rugby League is a tough game and that they have the talent to rise above the petty and narrow minded approaches of some and play their own game. As in the previous match the first ten minutes was cagey and tight. Defensive strength and line speed helped Hawks, with Reuben Kateregga and Jack Ryan taking the lead in some punishing tackles and drives. However, two quick tries out wide by Lambwath, with excellent conversions, took them in to an early lead. Hawks responded
well with Bailey Thompson scoring almost immediately after wriggling through a number of tackles. Indeed Thompson was a constant thorn in the Lions side, resulting in two unpunished high tackles. Lambwath scored again after a lucky bounce and knock on gave them the ball and Hawks were on the back foot. However, brilliant work by Tom Clark, Corey Hall and captain Pat Wakefield saw a determined finish by Clark in the corner. The half ended with the score at 1610. The second half was a catalogue of errors from both sides with Hawks never quite able to break through.
Two quite awful decisions presented the Hull team with two tries, one from an interception from offside players, another from a mystifying ‘knock on’, and they took advantage. Katerregga was immense in the tackle, Jack Ryan and Max Blackburn pushed hard in the middle of the park, Ryan in particular taking hits and dishing them out all over the pitch. As in the first half Hawks ended on a better note with a try from Saul Hinchliffe that showed the strength and aggression that is necessary to take the fight to tougher teams. Hawks will learn from this experience and be a better team for it.
