PETITION TO SAVE POPULAR BEVAN WAY POST OFFICE A CHAPELTOWN Post Office is to close on August 4 and the staff that work there have started a petition to keep it open, backed by their customers.
Wendy told Look Local: “I don’t understand it, the Post Office makes a profit and is really important to the community. There has been a Post Office in this area for at least 50 years.
Wendy Marks, manager of the Post Office inside the Costcutter on Bevan Way, says she only found out that it was closing because legal notices about an alcohol licence from the Co-Op were put up outside last Thursday.
“We’ve had to start a petition because we want to save it. We understand the building is to be demolished but we’d like either the Co-op to consider having us in there or maybe find another place nearby.
It has since transpired that Costcutter have not had their contract renewed and Co-Op have secured it.
“We have a lot of elderly people coming in and without this, they would have to travel to Chapeltown centre or to High Green which doesn’t sound very far but with the limited bus service, it’s not easy for them.
It is believed that the current building will be demolished and a new one built but there are currently no plans to replace the Post Office and it looks like the two staff, including Wendy, will be made redundant. There will be other jobs lost too, with the nine Costcutter staff also facing redundancy. The Post Office is set to close on August 4 and Costcutter will then close on August 6. Wendy Marks, right, is ready to fight to keep the valuable Chapeltown service

“We’re gutted. We’ve been kept in the dark and if I hadn’t seen the notices I wouldn’t have known, despite us closing in about two weeks. We find out for sure if we’re getting made redundant this week but it doesn’t sound like there are any nearby jobs for us to take.”

BURTON STREET PRIDE IN ATHLETES THE Burton Street Foundation in Hillsborough is counting down the days to the Special Olympics GB National Games Sheffield 2017, to be held in August. As well as helping with the organising and promotion of the Games, the staff at Burton Street have a special interest in the event with six of their clients taking part. Alex Thompson, Farhan Kiani and Luke Wan are all part of the basketball team representing Yorkshire. Also involved are Josh Townsend, an athlete, runner Nick Mann and 10-pin bowler Oliver Headley. The Burton Street Foundation is a converted Victorian school that is host to many businesses, enterprises and community groups. They also work with people of all ages with learning and physical disabilities and create sessions that are full of creativity and fun. All six of the athletes taking part in the Games are popular figures at Burton Street, taking part in a

Alex, who has learning difficulties, told Look Local: “I can’t wait for the Games. I’ve been playing basketball since I was eight and I also enjoy swimming, golf, bowling and football. If I can get gold here, it’ll be another achievement. I think we can do it! “I love the teambuilding and expression in basketball. It’s all about getting stronger together and working as a team. I like to travel but to be able to compete in Sheffield will be great. “It’s brilliant that my support worker Bob Harris is going to be able to come and watch me and the other staff here too. Bob told Look Local: “We want to offer as much support as we can. We helped with Alex’s fundraising for L.A. We had fundraising nights, raffles... I had my chest waxed! In the end, the Government paid for his trip so we’ve donated the £2,500 we raised to Special Olympics Sheffield. “That’s not the only way we’re supporting though, lots of us have volunteered to help out. I’ve had to swap my shifts so I can watch Alex and the boys play basketball though, he’s like a best friend to me, I wouldn’t miss it.” To find out more about Special Olympics GB National Games Sheffield 2017, visit http://sheffield2017.org.uk/

For most of the staff at Burton Street, this presents a first opportunity for them to see their sports stars in action and there’s a real buzz in the build-up to the glitzy opening ceremony which will see former MotoGP rider James Toseland perform with his band at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium.

Nicola said: “Today is all about working with Chapeltown Academy and Teach First to inspire students to prepare for the race. I would have loved to have been able to do this as a kid, be involved in a ride. “Some of the kids won’t have done a cycle ride like this or maybe even rode a bike so it’ll be good to help build their confidence so they know they can take part in activities they haven’t done before. It looked like they were enjoying it.”

The first dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, known as the MMR, is offered to all babies at one year old, and children are given a second dose before they start school. However, teenagers who only had one dose as young children may not be fully protected against measles, mumps and rubella, and are now being encouraged to visit their GP and have the vaccination. The Men ACWY vaccination, meanwhile, protects against four different strains of bacteria that cause meningitis and septicaemia. It is currently being offered to all students going to university or college for the first time. To have the vaccine, prospective students aged up to 25 should contact their GP, ideally before the start of the next academic year.

FRIENDS GROUP CELEBRATE MOST SUCCESSFUL EVENT YET IT was a hot, sunny day for Chapeltown Park Gala on Saturday July 8 and the crowds enjoyed lots of free attractions which the Friends of Chapeltown Park were able to put on due to funding from the Big Lottery (Celebrate England). The free Go Karts for four to 10 year olds were very popular, as was the penalty shootout with 150 people having a go at winning Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United tickets. Visitors could also try to win coconuts or small prizes and 280 free fresh fruit kebabs were eaten as fast as they could be made!

Organisers would like to thank all the volunteers who worked very hard all day to make the event so successful. The Friends of Chapeltown Park would also like to thank everyone for their
kind donations towards park funds to enable them to put on future free events. The raffle prizes were all claimed and you can check out the winning numbers on the Friends of Chapeltown Park Facebook page. Lots of local community stalls round the bandstand area proved popular and the local police force had a stall giving out advice and help. Thorncliffe Conservation Society, Messy Church, local councillors, The Environment Agency, Thorncliffe Health & Leisure, Chapeltown Athletic, High Green in Bloom plus some local businesses gave out local information. Ed Brown organised a vintage vehicle rally and Farrar’s Fairs, who are local to Chapeltown,
brought some children’s rides and a food van. Mr. Ronksley’s ice creams proved to be very popular. A spokesperson told Look Local: “All in all it was Chapeltown Park Gala’s most successful event so far. “It’s brilliant that such a successful and well-attended event can be held in the north of Sheffield with many free attractions to let families enjoy themselves without having to travel a long way or having to pay too much for a day out. “Thanks to everyone for supporting the Friends group. The next free event will be grass sledging in Chapeltown Park during the school holidays on Wednesday August 16 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.”

Senior Snippets Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Bryn Evans, Director of Home Instead Senior Care in Sheffield and Barnsley.
Staying socially active and maintaining your relationships are an important part of healthy aging. Reach out to your loved ones—neighbours, friends, family members—and stay as vibrant, active, and social as you've always been.
Finding ways to stay young at heart, stimulated, and busy is very important for seniors. Believe it or not, there are proven health benefits of social interaction in older adults including lower blood pressure and reduced risk for mental health issues such as depression.
I welcome any suggestions for future topics from you all. All you have to do is write to me at bryn. evans@homeinstead.co.uk or by post to Haywood House, Hydra Business Park, Nether Lane, Ecclesfield, Sheffield, S35 9ZX.
On the other hand, social isolation carries real risks. Some of these risks are feelings of loneliness and depression, high blood pressure and decline in mobility. In this edition of senior snippets, I have shared some easy tips to help seniors combat loneliness.

Stay in touch with friends and family: Try to visit with friends and family regularly. Although staying in touch in person is important, phone calls, snail mail, and e-mail can keep you connected, too. If you're not yet comfortable with computers, ask a young relative, friend or neighbour to help you.
Visit a senior centre: Many local centres have fun and engaging activities for seniors to participate in—this is a great way to make new friends, get out of the house, and do something fun!
Join a gym or fitness centre: This is a great way to stay physically fit and engage with others.
An evening with Welsh John JOHN Snook, known to his friends as Welsh John, will be hosting an evening of entertainment on the main stage of EPPiC Theatre in Ecclesfield on Saturday September 2 at 7.30pm. The show will be an evening of variety, based upon his acapella singing and poetry readings at the coffee mornings, with additional performances by invited friends of John’s and members of the audience. John would like you to take part! Do you sing or play a musical instrument? Have you a favourite poem or piece of prose that you would like to share?
Perhaps you would like to do a monologue or a sketch with a friend! The stage is yours for five minutes! John is putting the programme together so please contact him for more information and to discuss how you would like to contribute. Please e-mail or telephone John Snook at johnvaljohn@talktalk.net 0114-245-8204 Note that in order to encourage ‘live’ entertainment, karaoke style performances using pre-recorded music are not being permitted. This is a fund-raising event. Details of tickets will be released later.
100 years young
BLANCHE Matthews of Penistone recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the Buckingham Care Home with a party and entertainment along with her family and friends.
Can you be the person to help Joan? If you have a couple of hours to spare, apply today and enjoy a rewarding part- time career while making a different to Joan’s life.
Volunteer in your community: Helping others is a fantastic way to give something back to the community and remind yourself that even later in life, you, too, have something to offer.
Join a group: Your local library is a good resource that may have details of local groups available. Also, your local council can give you details of courses or groups that you may be interested in trying.

New PE experience inspires Grenoside school pupils PUPILS from Grenoside Primary were amongst the first to try out a brand new PE lesson with a difference this week. Almost 50 year six pupils took on the challenging Greno Woods obstacle course and smashed the course record, clocking up five whole laps as a team. Described as “epic”, “extreme” and “muddy” by pupils, the obstacle course includes a rope challenge, log carry, wire crawl, balance beam and slackline traverse along an off-road woodland trail run. Located at Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust’s outdoor learning site in Greno Woods, the course also benefits from the site’s new facilities – a composting toilet and, coming soon, an outdoor classroom. The course is at the heart of the Trust’s new Wild PE experience, a six-week course for Key Stages two to four, designed to inspire young people with a love of being active in the great outdoors. The launch of the Trust’s Wild PE experience comes on the back of Sheffield’s Move More Month and the Trust’s own 30 Days Wild campaigns. Chris Smith, the Trust’s Outdoor Learning team leader, thinks it is an
excellent way for schools to inspire kids to stay active outdoors. He said: “A lot of children really struggle to engage in mainstream sports. Getting out in the wild, getting muddy gives them a sense of freedom from the rules.” Phil Tuffin, Year Six Leader at Grenoside Primary School, was delighted to see the impact the experience had on the children. He said: “It really reinforced the school’s core values of resilience, resourcefulness and determination. The children worked brilliantly together and everyone was keen on the activities on offer. We wanted the children to have this experience because we know how engaged they become with tasks out in the wild, and we know that they take this positive attitude back to their work in the classroom and attack their school work with renewed vigour.” The full six-week Wild PE course includes weekly one-hour PE sessions cal skill, strength and stamina through and is designed to allow pupils to targeted in-school sessions before returning to the woods to try the obstacle course track their own progress. again and see how they have improved. Pupils first pit their skills against the Greno Woods obstacle course and re- The obstacle course itself is designed as a cord a baseline measurement of their team challenge and caters to a wide range performance, then build their physi- of physical skills, allowing every pupil to contribute to their team’s score.
The Wild PE experience is proving popular with schools, and there are just two subsidised places left for Sheffield and Rotherham pupils, which the Trust have been able to make available thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Issue 966 Gardening & Home Improvements Call 0114 283 11 00 August is usually the month when most of us go on holiday and leave our gardens to fend for themselves. A little thought before you go and some tender loving care when you return will be enough to make sure that you can go away without worrying about all of your hard gardening work going to waste and you can really relax on your holiday. While you are away and your garden is left unattended, many of your plants may suffer due to lack of water. Make sure that, before you go, you either arrange to have your containers and baskets watered, or set up a system that can supply water on a regular basis to your tubs and baskets. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid or alternatively make a few holes in the lid of a plastic water bottle, cut off the bottom of the bottle, turn upside down into the plant compost and then fill with water (which slowly drips into the soil).
You can apply the same watering principles to your veg patch as well. August (and September) is a month of gathering, harvesting, bottling and jam making for all ‘Grow Your Own’ gardeners. However, if the weather is good in some areas you can still sow quick maturing salad crops. An easy way to create your very own ‘moveable’ salad patch is by planting lettuce, radish, rocket and chicory in troughs and containers. Cherry tomatoes from the vine, sweetcorn on the barbeque, a warm salad of tender green beans and a home grown side salad … with some flowers for the table picked from the garden - lovely! A sweetly fragrant plant that works well as a cut flower but can also be used to attract wildlife such as bees and insects into the garden is Phlox. Flowering in mid Summer through to the end of the Autumn, Phlox is a superb hardy herbaceous perennial originally from North America, with scented starshaped pink, white and purple/ blue flowers. It is the ideal border plant, often used in cottage gardens, but is also good as a cut flower and can grow quite tall so may need some support.

Phlox likes a well nourished soil that has been enriched with rotted compost or manure and prefers full sun although it can tolerate partial shade. In late autumn cut the stems right down to the base and then mulch in early spring. August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential - but jobs for this month include ... •
Prune Wisteria
• Deadhead flowering plants regularly • Water - particularly containers and new plants - preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater • Collect seeds from favourite plants • Harvest home grown vegetables as they become ready • Keep ponds and water features topped up •
Look after the lawn
• Plan for next year and what bulbs to plant this coming Autumn

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
Treating families with respect and compassion. Well respected within the area and profession

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Cyclists Recently I was nearly run into by a cyclist while I was on the footpath, this is not the first time this has happened, and I don’t expect it will be the last. Some of these people show very little or even no respect for pedestrians. Many moons ago when I was in my youth and cycled everywhere, it was always considered an offence to ride a bicycle on the pavement, other than a child`s bike. So last weekend I asked one of our local PCSOs for clarity on this rules regarding cyclists. I was informed that it is still an offence to ride a bicycle on the pavements and could result in a fine of up to £100, obviously cycle

Dogs foul paths, cats foul gardens dogs bark, slugs and snails leave slimy paths over my steps once they have devoured my plants. In a world where there is so much hate and cruelty to humans and animals, we all need to take a step back and see the bigger picture. Do you really want to injure, hurt or kill someone’s beloved pet? Try the spray, investigate other deterrents, I’m sure you have not tried all of them. In the meantime, I will do my part as an animal lover by informing cat forums, RSPCA, that there may be cats in danger around the Hillcrest road area.

FIRSTS AND SECONDS WIN

STOCKSBRIDGE’S first XI travelled to Hallam looking to end a disappointing run of defeats. Captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and elected to bat first. He and Matt Price opened the batting and looked to get the first off to a positive start. Both Broomhead and Price batted with positivity and stubbornness to frustrate the Hallam opening bowlers. The pair put on 44 for the opening stand before Price was bowled for 20. Broomhead then departed for 28 after a caught and bowled dismissal. This brought Oliver Warren to the crease, who began to tick the score on for the first. Every bad ball was greeted with a boundary by Warren as he looked to be in top form. He was supported well by Dave Smith who made 18, before a rush of blood to the head gave his wicket away. Warren brought up an impressive 50, however he was caught on the boundary for 56 leaving Stocksbridge 166-6 with nine overs remaining. A sixth wicket partnership of 54 from Steve Perry (34*) and Joe Hibbert (20*) took the first to a very competitive 220-6. With a positive first half to the game Stocksbridge took to the field looking for a positive start. Joe Hibbert struck in the first over to remove the Hallam opener giving the first the start they wanted. An injury to Jake Vickers brought Mr Reliable Jim Tomlinson into the attack. As he had done all season, he bowled with consistency and intelligence to make it very difficult for the Hallam batters. Andy Hibbert, who was struggling with a hamstring injury, kept it tight at the other end. The veterans supporting each other very well and giving the first a firm grip of victory. With Hallam 103-3 Joe Hibbert cam back into the attack and he begin to pick up the wickets for the 1st. Hibbert, struck with his first ball back into the attack giving the 1st

the wicket they needed. Wickets began to fall and Hallam moved further and further away from victory. Dave Codd chipped in with two wickets and Hibbert finished with 5-25 off his 11 overs.

Hallam were restricted to 163-9 off 46 overs giving the first a well needed 20-point victory. The first travel to high flying Centralians on Saturday looking for back-to-back victories. The second XI were at home to Sheffield Civil Service second XI and elected to put the opposition in on a slightly damp wicket. Stocksbridge couldn’t have got off to a better start with Chris Thwaites taking the new ball and getting a wicket with the first ball of the innings, the opening Civil Service batsman gloving a short delivery to keeper Ben Lyons. The opening spell from Thwaites and Stubbs was excellent and left the away team at 23-2 after 14 overs with the second XI pair unlucky not to collect more than one wicket each. Youngster Rowan Brearley was brought into the attack from the top end and in a superb spell of bowling before and after tea took four wickets to leave Civil Service realing at 49-6, it was another example of the great junior players Stocksbridge CC have the impact they are making. Another bowling change brought vice captain Mark Wingfield into attack with an instant impact. In his only over he took three wickets and conceded no runs to continue his excellent season for wickets. Les Harris took the last wicket to finish the away teams innings on a woeful 49, with wicketkeeper Ben Lyons taking four catches and a stumping. The seconds reply got off to a comfortable start with openers Ant Siddall and Elliot Freeman breaking the back of the meagre run chase taking the home team to 38-0 before a flurry of three wickets gave the away team some minor reward before veteran Malc Perry and Ben Lyons calmly took the seconds home to victory and back to the top of the table.
Saturday July 8 was a busy day for Stocksbridge and District Golf Club as it was Lady Captain’s Day. Proceedings started early with a men’s Stableford competition. There was a strong field of players, third place went to Pete Sheerin, second place to Peter Elliott and in first place out of 46 players was Brian Straw with 42 points. Lady Captain’s Day is a social as well as a competitive day and started with raising the flag at 11am for present Lady Captain Kath Busfield. It was attended by both current and past members, including many past captains who helped with organising the competitions and keeping the conversation as well as the Pimms flowing in the halfway house. There was a Stableford, and a medal competition plus a nine-hole competition for the newer members. Also during the day Lady Captain had organised a putting competition as well as a treasure hunt based around the club house to keep everyone occupied. The prize of the day Lady Captain’s Cup went to Bev Sykes with a nett 67 with Eunice Turner second and Hilja O’Sullivan third. The prize presentation in the evening was really well attended and went long into the night.

LAST week, High Green Primary School were crowned Y Three/Four South Yorkshire Tag Rugby County Champions. It was a thrilling journey for the children whose success was built on a dominating defence, with the children only conceding two tries throughout the whole competition, combined with some clinical attacking play.
The children of High Green performed magnificently during the whole competition, especially considering they were playing against some much larger schools. The children played superbly and can be proud of what they have achieved. Mr Gregory, PE co-ordinator, said: “The children were brilliant, not only the way they played, but how they represented the school.
It could have been a different story for High Green, as in the Sheffield qualifying stage it came down to winner takes all in the final match against St Catherine’s. Thankfully it was High Green who came out on top with a 2-0 victory.
“They listened to all the advice that was offered to them and gave it their all on the pitch. I’m so proud that out of 84 teams across Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley that they have been crowned champions!”
At the South Yorkshire finals, High Green were one of three teams representing Sheffield, with all three teams making it through to the semi-finals, it is great to see Rugby League doing so well in Sheffield.
Adam Fuller, Sports Development Manager of Arches School Sports Partnership, added: “It’s a great achievement for the children to be county champions at this age, especially considering they played for a small one-form entry school.”
