Stocksbridge duo raise over £35,000 School friends Dan Hart and Calvin Marsland took on the challenge of climbing Africa’s highest mountain in a climb organised by World Expeditions – The African mountain stands at 5,895m (19,341 feet) – and the challenge was completed over six days in June. Dan completed the challenge in memory of his dad, Adrian Hart, and aunty, Alison Hart. Calvin dedicated his challenge to the memory of his mum Kelsey Marsland who lost her battle with cancer in 2015. All the money raised by their fantastic fundraising efforts has been donated to Weston Park Cancer Charity. Dan and Calvin took part in the challenge last month – the ascent up the mountain

took four and half days with the final hours of the climb in darkness, they reached the summit at sunrise in what was an emotional moment for them both. Dan said: “The last few hours before we reached the summit were extremely tough – it was cold and dark and it really was a long hard slog through the unknown. “We had been training hard for this but not experienced anything quite like it before. After all the months of preparation and fundraising it was an incredible feeling to reach the summit.” Calvin added: “We were both incredibly emotional when we reached the top, we felt very close to our loved ones and both shed a few tears – I scattered some of mum’s ashes, so there’s a little bit of Stocksbridge which will always be in Kilimanjaro.” The local community has really got behind Dan and Calvin’s inspirational story and
supported them with their fundraising. Events have been held to support their fundraising and a special Mount Kili Beer was also produced to support the West Park cancer Charity. A special balloon release was held at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge to wish them well when they set off. The winning balloon in this race travelled 74.5 miles to Sunny Scarborough, and was owned by John Raines. A prize has been sent to both the owner and finder of the balloon! The lads returned home to a huge welcome home party in their local pub, to celebrate the success of the past 18 months. Dan added: “We really couldn’t have done this without the support of so many people - friends, family and strangers who have come up to us and wanted to help us achieve this target. We’d like to thank them all.”

Local headteacher retires A FORMER Stocksbridge Town Councillor who has served a number of schools as a headteacher has retired. Peter Hardwick, who has lived in Stockbridge for 37 years, is retiring this week as executive head of Beck Primary School in Shiregreen and Hucklow Primary School in Sheffield. He is also CEO of Cascade Multi Academy Trust of which both schools are members. Pete also served as a local councillor on Stocksbridge Town Council in 1985. Peter has taught for 38 years. A Sheffield lad from Base Green, he began teaching in Barnsley at Cudworth Middle School in 1979. He taught at several schools before becoming head of Birdwell Primary in 1991. He then moved on to be an LEA advisor and Ofsted inspector. However his love for working in a school environment brought him back to headship. He has been head at Beck, the largest primary school in Sheffield, for 13-and-a-half years and also for the last three years at Hucklow.
He splits his time between both schools. Beck and Hucklow joined forces to plan and attended his surprise retirement party at the Hilton Victoria Quays on Friday July 14. The turn out was massive and left Peter overwhelmed. He has worked tirelessly in education for the benefit of all the children in his care and colleagues say that he will be a sad loss to
education. He is much respected by his work colleagues, governors, parents and children in his care.
Fitted in Oughtibridge
Peter has three children who all attended local schools; Stocksbride Infant School, Stockbridge Junior School and Stockbridge High School.

Ecclesfield School star backs Special Games KYLE Tomlinson, the incredibly talented young singer and finalist of this year’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, has been announced as a new Special Olympic Games Ambassador. Kyle will be singing and performing on the night of the opening ceremony at Sheffield United’s Stadium. Kyle, who attends Ecclesfield School, met a number of Special Olympics athletes and signed tickets at a special event on Tuesday. Kyle said: “I am so honoured to be an Official Games Ambassador for Special Olympics National Games in Sheffield and to sing at their Opening Ceremony in less than a month.
These Games give young people with learning disability a chance to show their ability – many of whom have been bullied and told what they cannot achieve. These Games are here to show the World what people with learning disability can achieve. “I know these Special Olympics Games are making the dreams come true for over 2,000 young people with autism and Down’s Syndrome who have a huge amount of talent that the World has yet to fully realise and see. I want to inspire youngsters that any dream is possible with hard work and persistence, a good family and support network, and obviously a big dream. “Nearly one million people have seen my tweets saying I would be delighted to perform at the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony for the athletes with learning
disability, their families, coaches, volunteers and the public. I am honoured Special Olympics went to the effort of finding me a slot in the show alongside Tony Hadley, James Toseland, Jim Carter, Suzi Perry, Chris Kamara, professional dance groups and many more entertainers. “We are already well over 10,000 people for the Opening Ceremony – but we would love to get it close to the capacity of 20,000 on the night.” The public can now buy tickets for the Opening Ceremony on Tuesday 8th August at Bramall Lane online at www.sufc. co.uk/special-olympics or 01142537200 option 1, or at the Sheffield United FC Box Office in person.

STOCKSBRIDGE woman Kayleigh Cruickshank has helped put together an art show in Sheffield’s popular Millenium Galleries. Kayleigh is the director of Artworks, a community interest day service providing quality day and work opportunities within the creative industries for adults with learning disabilities, autism, sensory disabilities and physical disabilities. The show is called Seeing is Believing and is inspired by the National Special Olympic Games to be held in Sheffield. It runs from Monday August 7 to Wednesday August 9. Kayleight old Look Local: “We are an arts organisation set up to help adults with learning disabilities and Autism achieve their creative potential by working alongside professional artists, photographers and filmmakers to create shows like this and complete work placements. “We are very proud of all our service users have achieved this is their first gallery show and it will not be their last.” Find out more at www.artworks-sheffield.co.uk
Man sentenced to community order after fatal collision A 68-year-old man has been handed a community order and disqualified from driving for one year, after admitting causing death by careless driving. Thomas Boyd, of Stanwood Crescent, Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday July 19 to be sentenced after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving. He was sentenced to a community order to complete 240 hours of unpaid work, as well as being disqualified from driving for one year. He will have to take a re-test at the end of his disqualification. At just after 8pm on Wednesday July 20 last year, Boyd was driving his Nissan Micra along Loxley Road, Sheffield, when it was involved in a collision with a cyclist.
The cyclist, a 38-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
“No sentence can ever bring back a loved one and our thoughts are with the cyclist’s family as they come to terms with the conclusion of the police investigation and court proceedings. “Cases like this are a stark reminder that motorists must pay attention to their surroundings at all times and drive carefully and respectfully of other road users. A split second’s carelessness or error can have fatal consequences.”
Commenting, Angela said: “There has been a Post Office here for the last 50 years and the current location has proved very successful and is well used by locals.
“The area itself has many elderly people who, if they lose postal services, will find it difficult to travel to Chapeltown or High Green. This is especially so, given the limited nature of bus services in the area

Penistone driver takes Stock car title PENISTONE’s Luke Maw won the V8 Hotstox British Stock Car Championship title at Kings Lynn over the weekend to add to the European title he won a month ago at Belle Vue, Manchester. Maw qualified on the front row of the grid courtesy of a win and a third in his qualifying heats. In the 32-car Championship final, Luke and Hinckley's Jon Brown led the field from flag to flag, negotiating backmarkers, traded places several times during the race and with one bend to go, Maw just
nicked Brown's bumper enough to spin him and go on to take the win and the title. It was one of the classic V8 Hotstox races of all time. Luke has raced other stock car formulas but has settled in V8 Hotstox now and is currently sixth in the points championship. With the British and European titles under his belt, Luke goes into the World Final at Buxton in September full of confidence with high hopes for a grand slam. Luke is a plant hire contractor during the week but at weekends stockcar racing takes over.
The V8 Hotstox are the same size as the sevenlitre Formula One stock cars, but instead use a Rover V8 for power with controlled rules on tyres, suspensions and engines, making the V8s a cheaper option to race and allows for entertaining action whenever they appear.
ing tactics are not allowed. Second hand cars are sold on average between £3,000 and £6,000. Unlike other motorsports there is no entry fee to race each event, a £80 annual licence fee is charged which grants the driver plus one other a pass into each event.
Unlike circuit racing, stock car racing sees the best drivers start at the rear of the grid; to win they have to force themselves through the grids of cars with use of the front bumper being allowed.
V8 Hotstox currently race around 27 meetings at Belle Vue Manchester, Birmingham, Buxton, Coventry, Kings Lynn, Mildenhall, Sheffield, Skegness, Hednesford and Stoke. You can find out more at http://www. v8hotstox.com/

Should Angela Smith go against the over 44,000 voters (both Labour and Tory voters) who voted for pro Brexit parties then at the next election she should be voted out of office. Yours Sincerely, K Godley.
Dear Editor, Following my last letter the list of marginal seats vulnerable to conservative take over is now available. Penistone and Stocksbridge is now the 22nd most vulnerable constituency requiring a voter swing of only 1.33% for a conservative victory. At each election I cast my vote for the party whose manifesto best reflects my political beliefs. In the last election I could not vote Labour as although in their manifesto they allegedly backed Brexit I was aware that Angela Smiths beliefs appear not to support Brexit. So time will now tell if Angela Smith supports the party's stance on this matter, should she not then I would urge all voters to take this into account at the next election.
We also have a speaker from The Friends of Wortley Hall Gardens to share with us how they manage to maintain the beautiful gardens surrounding the hall.
In the letter sent to all households where Angela Smith was beseeching people to vote for her she focused on her local achievements and tried to distance herself form Labour and Corbyn. I believe that Brexit was the result of a democratic vote and There will be spring bulbs available and our 2018 that Labour who included a pro Brexit stance in their calendar will be on sale for the first time. manifesto should now support the government in You may have already received a leaflet through getting the best deal and put aside party politics in your door inviting you to contact us but we may this area. dren’s confidence and boost their self-esteem in a fun and informal setting and I am excited to introduce them to new areas of Sheffield.”
Noodle Performance Arts started in Beighton, Sheffield, in 2011 offering fun and affordable performing arts and dance classes for children from walking age onwards. The business, which also includes children’s party entertainment, launched its first franchise in Mansfield last year and is now moving into north Sheffield.
Noodle Performance Arts sessions are suitable for children from walking age onwards and there are no compulsory uniforms or exams. Ballet Tots and Noodle Tots classes are aimed at toddlers up to the age of three and are a gentle introduction to dance and performing arts using action songs, music and movement.
Classes will start in September and parents can now book free taster sessions for their children. The classes will be taught in six different venues in North Sheffield – Christ Church Community Hall, Stocksbridge; St Mary’s Church, High Green; Silkstone Common Methodist Church; Wharncliffe Side Community Centre; St Alban’s Barn, Wickersley; and Wickersley Community Centre and Library.
Ballet Tots sessions will be held on Friday and Saturday mornings at Wharncliffe Side Community Centre and St Mary’s Church. Meanwhile, Noodle Tots classes are on Thursday and Saturday mornings at St Alban’s Barn and Christ Church Community Hall.
Franchise owner Carla Hewitt has more than 10 years’ experience teaching performing arts to children and she currently works in a secondary school as faculty leader for expressive arts. He may Thank you! be pleased to learn that I have purchased a shiny Joan – 0114 2883899, new shovel to dispose of the doings and he must be Mary – 0114 2885586, puzzled as to why I didn’t think of that before, doh Catherine – 0114 2831727, what an idiot? Angela – 0114 2883177. To the respondent who took almost two columns to explain why it is perfectly acceptable for cats to foul neighbour’s gardens but totally unacceptable for dogs to do the same, your sense of fairness 22nd most vulnerable astounds me. Be that as it may, you will no doubt be gratified to learn that I have traded my AK42 assault rifle on Ebay in favour of the aforementioned shovel. I have though, learned that cats do not like to venture outdoors when it’s raining so I have taken the absolute extreme action of having a word with the man upstairs. Weddings Feature
Time to plan your wedding WEDDING planning expert Tilly Wilkinson provides advice on which elements of your wedding to plan first… After the marriage proposal comes the wedding planning. But according to one wedding planning expert, one of the biggest uncertainties plaguing brides planning their wedding is when to choose and book each of their elements of their wedding. “We asked our 680,000 brides how long they spent planning their day,” says UKbride.co.uk’s wedding expert Tilly Wilkinson. “A third of brides spend two years planning their day. 23% plan their day in a year; 6% take just six months to organise their wedding. “Conversely, 15% of brides take three years, and 23% mull over preparations for longer than that… but that’s risky as prices, styles and trends can change over that time.” Two years is the ideal time span, and the first job is to choose a particular date. That way you’ll be able to approach venues and secure your chosen time and
place. You’ll then have an idea of numbers for your ceremony and reception. This time span will also allow you to budget and split the cost of your wedding down into small monthly amounts. Once you’ve an idea of how many guests you’ll invite, you can send Save the Date cards out a year in advance; wedding invitations should be sent out six months in advance. With a year left, you should have your honeymoon booked and should have caterers, photographers, videographers, and your wedding cake organised, as well as your flowers and wedding entertainment booked. The ‘year to go’ milestone represents the time by which all of the major decisions and suppliers should be confirmed. Jobs that can be left until the final six months before the wedding include your wedding bands, bridesmaids’ outfits, wedding decoration or styling, and groomsmen’s suits. In the final three months leading up to your wedding be sure to have at least two wedding

You can’t control everything on the day, so if it’s likely to rain or if relatives are causing you stress, try to simply turn the other cheek and don’t let anything spoil what will still be the happiest day of your life!”

Finding a school or nursery to suit your child FINDING the right school or nursery can be a stressful process but if your child is happy and learning then it’s worth the effort. Before you choose which schools to apply to, find out as much as you can so that you can make an informed decision. Ask yourself what you and your child need from a school or nursery and start gathering information early.
Brightholmlee Lane, Wharncliffe Side, Sheffield S35 ODD
27th July 2017
Issue 967
Once you know which nurseries and schools are near you, get as much information as you can about them.
This will give you a better idea of which might suit your child most. For example, you might like to: * visit the schools * read the schools’ prospectuses and study their admissions criteria * read the schools’ most recent inspection reports * Inspection Reports It’s also worth asking friends or family who have children in the local schools how they have found their experiences. Take your child along to as many open evenings as you can so they can have
some input into the decision. It can also help to make the first day more
comfortable if they are already familiar with their surroundings.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Steels take cup win over local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels 6-2 Penistone Church IT was Stocksbridge Park Steels who won the local battle on Friday night, taking a 6-2 win over Penistone Church in an entertaining game. The result saw them lift the Purdie Cup and the match raised £450 for charity. Weston Park Hospital and the South Yorkshire Air Ambulance took an equal share each of this. It was Church who took an early lead, Keiran Ryan slotting home after just four minutes. Steels then came back into it with Joe Lumsden finding the target and then took the lead through Liam McFayden. Jordan Coduri levelled the scores for Church before Brodie Litchfield made it 3-2 to Steels. Steels took hold of the game from then on with Lumsden completing his hattrick and Scott Ruthven adding to the tally. Despite the defeat, Church manager Ian Richards praised his players and described the difficulties he faced in the run-up to the match. He said: “An outsider looking in would see us loosing 6-2 but there’s quite a story to it really, we only came with 14 players because we had eight missing through holiday, other commitments and injury. “During the warm up we had our team sorted and Ash Ellis rolled and injured his ankle so we were down to 13 and we had to make a last minute change and bring Freddie Russell in who’s 17 and move Jordan Barnett, who’s also 17, from left back to midfield which made five players under the age of 21 playing who all individually are very good footballers and will be strong for this club. “But if you put them together against Stocksbridge Park Steels when they are at home, against a very strong Stocksbridge Park Steels - eight of those players will start in their first competitive game - it’s going to be a tough ask.”
TWO WINS FOR TAYLOR
LAST Saturday Birdwell Wheeler Dan Taylor had yet another top ten finish, when he rode the Border Wheelers 10-mile open time trial at Cockermouth in the Lake District. His time of 21.52 placed him sixth overall. Tuesday saw the fourth of the club’s 10-mile time trials at Park Springs. Fastest again was Dan Taylor in 21.17. The handicap event was a close run thing with Roger Bacon coming out on top in 20.02.
