ENGLAND STAR BACK TO HIS ROOTS

ENGLAND star Jamie Vardy made a secret return to the club where his footballing career all started over the weekend. The 30-year-old England international was back at Look Local Stadium in Stocksbridge after a seven-year absence. He was back with his family on Sunday July 30, after spending a successful summer with his V9 Academy. Vardy appeared very relaxed and quiet on his return meeting up with club officials for the first time since his departure from the club where he spent seven seasons from the age of 16. Chairman Allen Bethel said: “It was very nice to see Jamie again after all the success he has enjoyed in his footballing career. “We are very proud to be part of his story and hope he has a good season and makes next year’s World Cup squad in Russia. PIC: Vardy back at Stocksbridge: Jamie Vardy with club chairman Allen Bethel. Allen saw something special in a young Jamie but never expected the striker to be a premier league hot shot or a full England international.

Mascots to slow down drivers outside school CHILDREN from a north Sheffield primary school have taken creative measures to try and stop people driving too fast outside their school, with the purchase of two road safety mascots - Dave and Daisy.

promoting road safety or seen the metal children on the pavement in the morning. Please if you are hurrying off to work or in a rush, think, there are young children here and everyday you are putting their lives in danger by your thoughtless parking and driving.

Children from the School Council at Windmill Hill Primary School received £500 from the Friends of Windmill Hill to spend on road safety measures of their choosing. The pupils decided to purchase two banners for the school fence and two mascots who are wearing Windmill Hill uniform and will sit outside the school on the road at the start and end of the school day.

“All of us want to have a safe journey to and from school; so you would have our upmost respect if you listen to this warning and park more safely around our school. Think straight, don’t park at our gate.” Katy Davison from Friends of Windmill Hill said: “Parents contact us all the time about how concerned they are about safety outside the school gates on the roads surrounding school, so we decided £500 would be well spent reminder drivers to drive and park safely.

By placing the child sized mascots in the road it is hoped they will act as a visual reminder to drivers that children are around and to try and slow down cars driving along the road.

“We decided that as the pupils at school have learnt about road safety, letting the school council choose what they wanted to spend the money on would be a good idea and they have chosen really well.

The pupils in the School Council also sent an accompanying letter to parents, which said: “It has come to our attention that roadsides around school are becoming more dangerous every year.

“The mascots in particular are a very creative idea and we are sure they will be successful in reminding drivers to slow down around school.”

“Due to this, we have taken action; you may have seen the signs around school

MP seeks assurances

PENISTONE & Stocksbridge MP, Angela Smith whose constituency includes the Eastern part of the Woodhead Pass has written an urgent letter to the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling MP asking for assurances about future projects connecting Sheffield and Manchester. Angela, who has for many years been an avid campaigner for better cross Pennine links is now concerned that money once earmarked by the former Chancellor, George Osborne to improve northern transport, including £75m to develop a cross Pennine tunnel will now be dropped. This follows recent announcements that electrification of the Midland Mainline is to be shelved, the Leeds to Manchester rail link will not see a full upgrade and rumours now that the northern hub project is to be scaled back.

Special Full Monty screening at Burton Street THE Full Monty is the story of a group of unemployed steelworkers trying to find a new life for themselves in the post-industrial north. It was a landmark moment in Sheffield culture, it captured the imagination of a nation and went on to achieve international success. herself, she decided she wanted to introduce the benefits of performing arts to younger children.

Noodle Performance Arts already has popular sessions in a number of locations in Sheffield as well as neighbouring Rotherham. But now children in the north of the city will get the chance to try out Noodle for themselves with free trial classes starting in September.

She will also be supported by a team which includes experienced professional performers.

Carla Hewitt, who owns the Noodle North Sheffield franchise, said: “There’s something really special about Noodle Performance Arts, which appeals to both children and their parents. Those who come along get the chance to learn new skills and perform in front of an audience but the classes focus on having fun, building confidence and making friends. “There are no compulsory uniforms or stressful exams and we do everything we can to make the classes as affordable for families as possible. We also have something for all ages from our toddler classes to NPA Academy, which is suitable for children from five to 16.” Carla is a professional teacher who has 10 years’ experience working with primary and secondary-school aged children. Since becoming a mum

Classes will be held on Saturdays at Christ Church Community Hall in Stocksbridge from September 9 with Noodle Tots (a gentle introduction to performing arts for toddlers from walking age to three) from 9am to 9.30am. Ballet for three to sixyear-olds follows from 9.45am to 10.30am with performing arts for three to six-year-olds from 10.30am to 11.30am.

To stick with the Sheffield theme, tickets include a locally sourced hotdog (veggie alternative available) with Henderson’s Chutney, and a special edition, locally brewed Full Monty ale will be served throughout the evening.

Full Monty writer Simon Beaufoy will be introducing a special 20th anniversary screening and will be available for a Q&A session afterwards.

There will also be Saturday classes at St Mary’s Church in High Green with ballet tots at 9.15am, performing arts at 10am and ballet at 11am. Carla added: “We still have spaces available at our free taster classes so come along, join in and most importantly have lots of fun.” For a full class timetable or to book a free taster class online, visit www.noodleperformancearts. com You can also email carla@noodleperformancearts.com for more information.

Getting in the swing of things

The Grange Park Golf Club has been providing golf lovers with picturesque parkland to swing their clubs for over 45 years.

Since leasing the business 12 years ago, owners Richard Townley and Steve Gillott have invested over £1.8 million in Grange Park, renovating the course and refurbishing the club house. Established in 1972, Grange Park has panoramic views over some of the area’s most stunning countryside, providing the perfect backdrop while walking the challenging 18-hole course. Designed by renowned gold architect Fred Hawtree, Grange Park was originally a municipal course and is open to golfers of all abilities. The general public and members alike can enjoy the recently lengthened 6,700 yard course, which makes it one of the revered in the region. In 2013 the joint owners brought David Snowden, expert of Agronomy, on board, who has introduced his pioneering methods to greenkeeping such as foliar feeding, making a noticeable difference to the way the course plays. Many new bunkers and hazards have been added to the course and the course has matured into an excellent test of golf.

Holiday tips for pet owners This week we are featuring holidays and with so many great places to explore here in the UK, why not let someone else take all the work on when it comes to arranging the excursion? There are lots of local businesses who are only too happy to take that responsibility on for you and they have vast experience in making sure that their customers have the best trips. With one in three families owning a dog, a cat or both it is no wonder that more and more people are booking holidays that include their four-legged friends. Below are a few tips for taking your pet on holiday with you! There was a time it wasn’t possible to take pets abroad without considerable difficulty, making the prospect of them joining the family holiday out of the question. With so many of us feeling sad at leaving our furry companions behind, travel operators are fast finding ways of accommodating them. Ferry services are particularly geared-up for taking cats and dogs abroad to destinations including France and Spain - and some even accept ferrets and caged pets. Many have kennel accommodation, and the costs are no more than for a person - and certainly less than paying for kennels while you are away.

You will need to establish that the accommodation you are going to will accept pets - some campsites won’t accept them, and there are also country restrictions. Certain dog breeds, particularly those such as pit bull, rottweiler and Staffordshire bull terrier, may not be allowed on campsites by law. French legislation has a list of first and second category dogs where some are banned from entry, and others have to be muzzled and kept on a lead at all times while they are in public areas.

All you need to be on your way together is a valid DEFRA certificate - also known as a PET passport which can be obtained from any registered vet. A PET passport or third country certificate shows that the pet has been micro-chipped and vaccinated against rabies. You need to ensure you plan ahead, as your pet may not leave or re-enter the UK until 21 calendar days have elapsed from the date of the rabies vaccination. Rabies boosters must be kept up to date. Your pet must be inspected by vets, both in the UK before departure and abroad before your return (most vets in France are not open on Sundays and Mondays). Ensure that you are fully aware of the regulations before planning your journey. It is also worth asking your vet about heartworm, which may be more prevalent

among dogs on the continent than those in the UK, and also asking about treatment against ticks.

Once you have decided you are going to take your pet on holiday, you will need to book in advance otherwise they won’t be able to travel. Then when you are on board, these tips can help make your pet’s journey as comfortable as possible: * make sure your pet is as fit and healthy as possible to withstand the journey. * give them a light meal about two hours before they travel. * give your pet the opportunity to go to the toilet before it is put in its carrying container. * let your pet try out the carrying container before the trip. The carrying container should be well-ventilated, safe, roomy enough for the animal to move around, and have adequate food and water for the trip, with easily-refillable containers for a long journey. * put a familiar-smelling cushion or rug in the container to help your pet settle.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

passed away 2nd August 2016.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Every day that passes, you’re in my thoughts and in my heart. I love and miss you so much. From your loving wife “My” Linda

Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

So let’s remember what swayed their votes : £350 million a week for the NHS was one. Fear of Turkey joining the EU (remember they were told Turkey IS joining the EU, not WANTS to) was another. And all this was reported as “fact” by the Daily Express, the Daily Mail and The Sun (why do people read those “opinion papers”?).

Canoeist with an eye on Olympic dream LOOK LOCAL deliverer Andrew Crowhurst has won promotion to the Premier Division of canoeing. The 18-year-old began canoeing with 3rd Stocksbridge Scout Group and then joined Sheffield Canoe Club, entering the National Division Three and Four slalom hosted by Sheffield Canoe Club.

Project2_Layout 1 06/04/2017 17:12 Page 1

He enjoyed racing and started going to other national events.

By the end of 2014, Andrew had reached Division One for his K1 (kayaking) and C1 (canoeing) and was training most weeks at the National White Water Centre in Nottingham, as well as monthly training sessions with Yorkshire Slalom. This year, Andrew decided to concentrate on C1 which turned out to be a good choice – at the last Division One slalom, Andrew won and secured enough

points to gain promotion to the top division. He will now race domestically against the top athletes including a Silver medallist from the last Olympics. Andrew told Look Local: “I pretty much fell in love with it immediately. I’d love to compete in the Olympics - that’s the dream. I’m now a leader at Scouts and I’m hoping to help some of the Scouts get into the sport.”

SUCCESS FOR GOLF CLUB Saturday July 15 saw a Stocksbridge Golf Club’s men take part in the Cumberland Cup by 74 players in a Stableford format. This is a points scoring format where someone getting a par on a particular hole gets two points. A one over par gets one point and a one under par gets three points.

The weekend before saw a team of Stocksbrige ladies, led by Ladies Captain Kath Busfield compete in a four person match at Bridlington Links Golf Club. The team consisting of Kath, Bev Sykes, Sue Hill and Margaret Pearson came second out of 20 teams. Stocksbridge member Ann O’ Donnell who also represents the Bridlington club was in the winning team.

In the second half, Oughtibridge piled on the pressure and again got caught on the break before Matt Harrison pulled one back with a fine finish. Harrison then scored his second with a fine turn and shot and then completed his hat-trick when he was one on one with the keeper and made no mistake. Three from three for firsts

STOCKSBRIDGE Cricket’s first XI travelled to Sheffield Civil Service looking to make it three wins from three.

After a week of poor weather, captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and decided to bat first. With the wicket looking like a road, openers Broomhead and Matt Price took to the crease looking to get off to a positive start. Broomhead was the first to be removed as he was bowled for 5. Price was the next to go, as he was triggered lbw for 11. The first needed to dig and Bob Newton batted with patience and was stubborn as he began to anchor the innings. Ben Cherry was the next man to be removed as he was caught behind for zero. Oliver Warren came to the crease, him and Newton dug in and the pair began to tick the score along. Warren was removed bowled for a well made 28, Liam Grayson made an impressive 91 for the second XI. this was then followed by Newton for 24. Jack Newton (20), Steve Perry (24*) and a quick fire 15 from Jake Vickers took the first up to a competitive 195 all out. The first were confident their bowling attack would to be too much for the Civil Service batsmen.

The visitors won the toss and asked Stocksbridge to bat on a damp looking wicket at Bracken Moor. STEELS LOSE OUT TO OWLS Stocksbridge PS 2-4 SWFC

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels faced Sheffield Wednesday’s under-23 side at The Look Local Stadium on Saturday losing 4-2. Jack Stobbs set the ball rolling after ten minutes for the visitors with a crisp finish from George Hirst’s low feed. And the Owls swiftly doubled their advantage as Sean Clare struck powerfully into the net following a superb 50-yard dash upfield by Fraser Preston. Matt Penney made it 3-0 before the break with a thunderous left-foot strike from 30 yards. And the game was effectively put to bed midway through the second half when Stobbs calmly converted from the penalty spot, though the hosts hit back to halve the deficit with a strong rally late in the game. Joe Lumsden pulled a goal back for Stocksbridge and George Grayson made it 4-2, tapping home on the rebound after a superb Dan Wallis save.
