Manchester bombings
Colleagues cycle 100 miles in memory of Sheffield victim On 22 May 2017 there was a tragic attack following the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester where 22 innocent adults and children sadly lost their lives One of those victims was, Kelly Brewster, from Sheffield. Kelly was an Aviva employee and part of the medical expenses claims team in Sheffield. She had worked for the insurance company for over 7 years and was a much loved and respected member of the team In memory of Kelly, a combined team of volunteers from Aviva and their key partner brokers took it on themselves to raise £50,000 for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (as chosen by Kelly’s family) to thank them for their support for Kelly’s niece, Hollie Booth, and many other young victims
who were treated there following the attack Wednesday 6 September saw cyclists complete a 100 mile route from Manchester to Sheffield, via Stocksbridge rugby club. Denise Frith from Deepcar and an Aviva employee who worked with Kelly for several years explained “ The day was terrific but very emotional” The riders were able to use Stocksbridge rugby club to refuel with flapjacks, coffee and bananas on their journey to the Aviva offices on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield. Just over £34,000 has been raised in little over 2 weeks and all proceeds will go to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Extinct plant found in the Peak District A rare plant previously thought to be globally extinct has been rediscovered in the Peak District National Park. Two small populations of the leek-coloured hawkweed, 62 plants in total, have been found flowering on the banks of the Monsal Trail, in Chee Dale. Leek-coloured hawkweed flowers are yellow, similar to a dandelion but smaller. The plant gets its name because its leaves are the same chalky-green as the vegetable, leek. The discovery of Hieracium subprasinifolium, to give the plant its botanical name, was made by Dr Tim Rich whilst collecting seeds for Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank.
Dr Rich said: “Leek-coloured Hawkweed has not been seen in Derbyshire for over 60 years and is thought to have died out at its only other known world site in Staffordshire a few years ago, so I was very, very pleased to find these two small but healthy populations growing near the Monsal Trail. “Hawkweeds are fascinating and unusual plants, we know of more than 400 species of hawkweed in Britain. Many are very uncommon or rare, and include British hawkweed, Dales hawkweed and Derby hawkweed, which are unique to the Peak District.” continued on page 21...

Tour of Europe charity challenge A team of hardy cyclists from the Stocksbridge company Dransfield Properties Ltd have cycled through rain storms and mountainous climbs to complete the toughest leg ever of their Tour of Europe charity challenge last week.
The six strong team set off on Monday September 4th from Copenhagen and have braved tough conditions through Denmark, Sweden and Norway before arriving in Oslo on Friday September 8th to complete the challenge. It is the 10th anniversary of the marathon fundraising effort which started back in 2007 with a ride from London to Paris. Since that first ride the team have raised well over £436,000 for charity and they have covered more than 4,100 miles, cycling through thirteen European countries.

Over the years they’ve covered punishing routes travelling through Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Portofino, Rome, Dubrovnik, Trieste, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen – and this year’s route which finished in Oslo. They aim to be back in London - where the challenge started – by 2020. Dransfield Properties is the company behind the award winning Sheffield shopping centre Fox Valley. Managing Director and charity ride founder, Mark Dransfield, said: “It has been a really tough ride this year – we’ve had dreadful rain storms through the week and the climbs have been really challenging. “It really has been a huge personal challenge for everyone involved and this year’s route through Denmark, Sweden and Norway was incredibly hard.

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy visited the new Burncross Gateway Garden, a R.H.S "Greening Grey Britain" project. But just a few years after he decided to lose weight, get fit and take up running, Jorge, from Walkley, ran this year’s London Marathon in less than three hours, and regularly finishes in first place at Hillsborough Parkrun. The 27-year-old also weighs in six stones lighter than he did that day back in 2013, when he looked in the mirror and decided it was time to get fit, for good. “Everything has changed”, he said. “I run every day – for my mental health as well as to stay fit – I cycle to work every day, and unless I’ve got a big race coming up, I don’t even worry about my weight any more.
“Losing weight is like a performance-enhancing drug, only legal. I started running in 2014 and ran my first marathon less than two years later, in 3hrs and 19 seconds. “In this year’s London Marathon I knocked more than five minutes off that time, and with some more hard work I know I can get faster, too.” Growing up in Northumberland, Jorge was fit and active as a child, playing rugby and football for his school. But it was after he moved to Sheffield to study at university that the weight began creeping on. “I wasn’t doing any organised sport any more, was drinking more alcohol, and wasn’t watching what I ate”, he said. “Although I was buying bigger clothes, and I would get out of breath and sweaty very quick-
ly, I didn’t really realise that I was getting so much bigger. “One day I looked in the mirror, though, and I could see it, especially in my face. I decided that I was going to lose some weight, so downloaded an app for counting calories. “After about two weeks of doing that, I came to the realisation that I could eat more calories if I did some running, so I started doing short runs near my house in Walkley.” At first, Jorge did laps of around 800m, “so I was never too far from my own front door”, and, after he could run 5km without stopping, decided to venture onto the trails of Rivelin Valley. Rivelin is now home to two signed Run Routes as part of the Outdoor City project – and Jorge says it remains a fantastic place for beginners to start their running journey.
“The fantastic thing about Rivelin”, he said, “is that the trails are well marked, there are usually other people around, and it’s impossible to get lost. “Plus, if you’re not wanting to run very far, you can drive there and park right by the trail, and then run as far or as little as you like. “I’d really encourage beginner runners to give the Run Routes a go.” Jorge ran his first Parkrun – a free, weekly 5k series of events – in August 2014, at Hillsborough. It took him 24 mins and 13 seconds – a time he has now shaved down by more than seven minutes. He said: “Parkrun, I think, is one of the very best things you can do to feel better about doing physical activity. “I made friends through Parkrun who boosted my enthusiasm and motivation for

ple-to-follow, trafficfree trails, from urban sites to fantastic green spaces and stunning viewpoints, through Sheffield’s diverse parks and woodlands.
Jorge now weighs around 12.5 stone and recently set a new 5k PB of 16:57.
There is something to suit everyone, with a number of different options and colour-coded routes at each site, graded as Easy, Medium, Hard and Challenging, and which loop back to a clear starting point with a noticeboard and map.
“If I can do it, anyone can”, he said. “The great thing about losing weight, especially when you’re as big as I was, is that it comes off pretty quickly at first, so I found it easy to stay motivated. “And when my weight began to plateau, I could look at the app, see the graph showing how much weight I’d lost, and that kept me going.”
George, “If I can do it, anyone can”.
Sites in the first phase of the project were Concord Park and Woolley Woods, Ecclesall Woods, Bradfield, Graves Park, Crookes Valley.
The Run Route initiative, funded by England Athletics, was officially launched last year as part of the wider Outdoor City project and makes it easier than ever for new runners to get going in Sheffield.
In the second phase, new routes were added at Rivelin, High Hazels, Firth Park, Shire Brook Nature Reserve, Thorncliffe and Wharncliffe. For more information, visit The Outdoor City website at www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/the-outdoor-city-run-routes/

Use-by dates are found on perishable items, often those with a short shelf life. These items become microbiologically unsafe to eat after that date and have the potential to cause illness if eaten. On 31 August 2017, during a hearing at Barnsley Magistrates Court, Singh’s Premier Store Ltd pleaded guilty to 10 charges under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013. The magistrates, giving credit for an early guilty plea, imposed a £5,000 fine for the offences, ordered the company to pay costs of £1,400, and a victim surcharge of £170, totalling £6,470. To celebrate the 80th anniversary, ‘In the Mood’ will feature the music of the Big Band era of the majestic 1930’s and 40’s including a tribute to the legendary Glenn Miller Orchestra. On this occasion Blackpool Tower organist Kevin Grunill will be at the console and he will be joined by the popular Take 2 Big Band. A must for all big band music lovers. Pay on door. COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PA HUNSHELF PARISH – COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PARTY is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - being awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to re-
ceive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. HUNSHELF PARISH – COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PARTY is one of the groups on the shortlist. The Parish Christmas Party brings together all the age groups in the Parish community in a single event which caters for all. The provision of the buffet and entertainment is free for all
attendees but relies on fundraising to support the small grant provided by the Parish Council. The event was in decline until its format was changed from a 'Senior Parishioners only tea' to the more inclusive all ages Party. Since when attendance has grown from circa 30 to 100. This is the one community event that brings all age groups together to socialise and share their experiences and knowledge of the community's past.

Stanwood Church, Sheffield S6 5HZ Saturday 16th September 10:30-11:15 (doors open for refreshments at 10:00am) free admission. Stuart Young, until recently the Secretary, Concert Secretary and Marketing Manager of Sheffieldbased Loxley Silver Band, has been asked to present a review of the history of the band, one of the oldest and continuously extant in the region, having been established since 1889. The presentation, with musical and video examples, will take place in the Loxley Silver Band rehearsal room at the Stanwood Church, Sheffield S6 5HZ on Saturday 16th September commencing at 10:30 and will be hosted by the church trustees.
The presentation will focus on the history of Loxley Band, but will also refer to the lost bands of Sheffield and the history of brass bands in general as well as specific reference to the wide variety of events and projects that Loxley Silver Band has been involved with over more recent years, including several recordings both in their own right and in conjunction with other artists. It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!
Happy Birthday!
You don’t look a day over 16!

THE TRAM EXTENSION PROPOSAL & BUS CUTS
CHANGE TO BUSES PART THEE (FOUR, ACTUALLY)
When will we ever learn?
The bus cuts debate hit a new low with David Lawson claiming (in his most recent letter) that the buses are too slow to get into town “because they stop to pick people up”. This is an even funnier line than his wanting the buses to go even more ‘round the houses’ than they do already (see his first letter). Well, just the bus, bus & tram or tram-all-the-way have one thing in common: THEY DO INDEED STOP TO PICK PEOPLE UP. Mr Lawson gives the game away. He is hinting at the tram on the rail line hurtling through to Hillsborough without stopping. That’s because it’s a route too far away from those communities north of Hillsborough to be of any use to them. It’s on the wrong side of the valley. There is no access of any kind to the line from Wharncliffe Side or Brightholmlee, and it’s too far up Jaw Bone Hill at the very edge of Oughtibridge for almost any of that population to bother making the trek. Now, if it doesn’t pick anybody up en-route, then there would still have to be a regular bus service to within three or four minutes of Deepcar, even if there were a tram extension there. And that truly is the final nail in the coffin of this pipedream. At least Mr Lawson concedes that there is a problem in bus / tram transfer and Stagecoach Bus and Stagecoach Supertram being different companies. That’s an implicit admission that a valley-floor through bus service to Sheffield city centre instead of forcing use of the tram is a perfectly feasible commercial competition. But then David tries to make a virtue of the tram itself going round the houses on its way to town – via the University – when instead it needs to go direct to where most people are going: the city centre and the bus and train stations. At the same time, he criticises that a through bus would require a ‘clipper’ service up the hillside this end (which, by the way, I myself highlighted: he pretends it’s an omission of mine), as if a tram extension would not require the same. Or is his proposal for the tram to go up Carr Road and Hole House Lane (which for a start are are too narrow), pushing cost even further into the stratosphere as well as slowing the journey to town? With such a dismal ability to argue and make sense, Mr Lawson is hardly equipped to persuade the City Council to part with money it doesn’t have, for a community it holds in such contempt as to close the sports centre and try to mis-use the community’s own land on which it stands. Mr Lawson claims I owe him an apology, though to divert from this being for my temerity in attacking his tram-rail utopia, he makes out he has joined the offercerati merely because I called him Dave. Well, if that name was good enough for Call-me-Dave himself, our ex-PM albeit hapless but gracious referendum loser, then it’s surely good enough for someone peddling a scheme from the outset as dead as a dodo in cloud cuckoo land. Steve Moxon, Hillcrest Road, Deepcar
Our Dave (sorry, Call-me-David) Lawson in joining the Offencerati last week and asking for an apology for what he sees as my temerity in challenging his anti-bus / pro-tram delusion, signals he knows the weakness of his position. His letter mostly reiterates and endorses my points! His re-riposte couldn’t have done a much better job of joining me in arguing for the reinstatement of a valley-floor fast bus service plus a ‘clipper’ for the hills this end. He actually repeats my key point that Stagecoach Bus and Stagecoach Supertram are wholly separate companies. Exactly, Dave! That’s why we could have a through bus ignoring the tram and the delay it causes at Middlewood. The problem is just as he parrots: that the tram has its timetable it sticks to independent of bus arrivals, and that’s why the transfer from bus to tram and vice-versa is so uncoordinated and often proves a lengthy wait. Glad you grasp that now, Mr Lawson. Call-me-David also actually repeats my point that valley-floor services would entail a ‘clipper’ service, though cheekily pretends this is somehow my omission! Somebody remind him that the tram too would be a valley-floor service; it wouldn’t do a 57 hill climb job. Or is he seriously proposing to route the thing up Carr Road and Hole House Lane? Has he seen the width of these roads? Can he imagine the extra cost? And anyway what about the delay to those travelling from / to the top end? According to our Dave – now just get this -- the bus and bus / tram are too slow to get into town ... because they stop to pick people up! Does he think all you readers are completely inane? No, Dave; they are too slow because they go round the houses (upper Oughtibridge, Worral, Wadsley, Wisewood council estate and Dykes Hall Lane) or you have to wait for the damn tram at Middlewood. Yes, buses do stop to pick up / set down ... just as your extended tram would do. Trying to make a virtue of even the tram going round the houses on its way to town, our Dave reckons it‘s great that it deviates via the University. Que? It needs to go direct to where most people are going: the city centre and the bus and train stations. In any case, the tram itself isn’t (and won’t ever be) a through service to the Uni from Stocksbridge: a fast bus service would drop you at Hillsborough Interchange right by the stop for the 52 bus (which is more frequent than the tram). With such absence of argument Call-me-David nevertheless thinks he’s equipped to bamboozle the Liebore controlled City Council. That’s the mob with our interests so close to their hearts that they axed our sports centre and told us we can go to the brand new one they’re building … in Ecclesfield; oh, and they planned to nick Oxley Park to build houses on -- which was a main reason why they wanted to axe our sports centre. Our Dave reckons he can wangle out of this shower a shed load of money it doesn’t have for a Stocksbridge tram. We know Liebore are dumb, and have a penchant for virtue signalling their political right-on-ness (waving their willies in the air, in common parlance), but come on. Even the oily charm of near-namesake Call-me-Dave, our ex-PM, would get nowhere to try to pull this one off. Call-me-David’s plan is a Dodo in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Travelling by bus into the city the week prior to changes of 50 services across South Yorkshire I picked up on board a leaflet explaining the routes that were affected. On the back of this document it stated that to plan your journey, or find a timetable, please visit Sheffield Bus Partnership website, follow us on twitter or call Traveline on 01709 51 51 51. I called Traveline, what an experience! After listening to boring music for 43 minutes, interrupted every 30 seconds by a voice telling me where I was in the queue (21st when I started), I finally managed to speak to an Operator. The lady I spoke to then took a further 7 minutes, she put me on hold to another burst of piped music, before I found out the information that I had asked for. Is there little wonder why people ringing this number are pulling their hair out at the length of time it is taking to get answers? This was my first ever call to Traveline, and it will certainly be my last.

Big day, big bills - couples seem to be cutting back on wedding extravagance.

LAST OF THE BIG SPENDERS The romance of getting married is quite often marred by the worrying costs involved. The consensus is that the average outlay is spiralling ever upwards, but new research now suggests that couples may be becoming more restrained in their attitude to spending on their big day.
The average cost of a wedding is now about £16,000. A survey carried out by Halifax Personal Loans reveals that only nine per cent of people think this is a reasonable amount to pay. Over half of those questioned thought this was too much to fork out on their nuptials, believing that £10,000 or less was a more appropriate figure. One quarter of people in the survey would hope to cut costs even further
between £5,000.
group and eight per cent of the 35-44 age group.
would be more reasonable to spend under £1,000.
Singletons are the most likely to be dreaming of an extravagant wedding, with a quarter of this group prepared to consider spending more than £15,000 when they get hitched.
Northerners are most inclined to splash out on weddings. Four per cent said spending over £50,000 on their big day would be acceptable. Couples in the southwest are the least likely to pay over the odds, with 17 per cent considering less than £1,000 a reasonable amount.
Ian Corfield, head of Halifax Unsecured Personal Loans, says, “Weddings seem to have come back in fashion in recent years and we have seen average costs increase dramatically.
by spending £1,000 and
Interestingly, people who are already married or who had been married before were far less likely to see the need to splash out over the odds. Only 13 per cent and 15 per cent respectively believed it was reasonable to spend £15,000 or more. Young love knows no financial bounds it seems, with one in five of the 1825 age group considering £15,000 and over a reasonable amount to pay. This compares with one in 10 of the 25-34 age
When it comes to the honeymoon, more people appear to be comfortable with the typical costs involved. The average cost of a honeymoon trip is estimated at £2,475. Nearly half of those questioned agreed that between £2,000 and £4,999 was a reasonable sum to pay. One in five considered over £5,000 a more suitable figure. Only three per cent thought it

“However, our survey suggests that there may be a change in opinion as to how much couples should spend. It may be that the costs typically involved have reached a level that is no longer considered reasonable. “In contrast, people seem generally more comfortable with average honeymoon costs and do not see this level of expense as unreasonable or overinflated.”

Extinct plant found in the Peak District continued from page 3... But this is the first time leek-coloured hawkweed has been officially identified and recorded in the area since the 1950s. It is native to Britain but has only ever been recorded at four sites in the Peak District. It is not known anywhere else in the world. Chee Dale is now the only known location in the world that the plant is found and the sites of the two groups of plants are owned by the Peak District National Park and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. Rhodri Thomas, Natural Environment & Rural Economy Team Manager for the Peak District National Park, said: “We are delighted with the discovery of Hieracium subprasinifolium close to the Monsal Trail – it’s one of the best indications we could ask for to show that the work we do to look after the trail side verges and the embankments is good for wildlife. Our trail rangers and volunteers regularly clear these areas of invasive hawthorn and young trees to allow wildflowers and plants to thrive. ” Julia Gow, Reserves Officer at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust who manage the Nature Reserve at Chee Dale said: “We were very excited to hear that leekcoloured hawkweed is thriving in our Reserve. The rarity and particular biological requirements of this plant shows just how vital Nature Reserves are for providing places for wildlife and nature conservation – in this case, the entire world population of a species!” Leek-coloured hawkweed is a perennial plant and only grows in rocky limestone habitats. To help safeguard its future seed has been collected for long-term storage as part of Kew Gardens’ Millennium Seedbank Partnership, which has collected seed from more than 37,000 species from all over the world.
Tree charter branches out in Don Valley
Work has started to highlight the importance of trees in the Upper Don area with the formation of a new Tree Charter Scheme organised by the Woodland Trust. It aims to recognise and reinvest a charter signed 800 years ago by King Henry III, which gave commoners ground breaking new rights to the forests of England. After eight centuries, woodlands have changed much and the Woodland Trust is keen to involve more people in preserving what already exists and to plant more. The Upper Don Charter Branch has been formed by Julia Tomson from Oxspring and Dave Perkins, originally from Stocksbridge.
In part, it takes the form of a petition with the Woodland trust offering to plant a new sapling for every name added to the list. Members of the public will be able to sign the Tree Charter at Penistone Show on Saturday 10 September 2017 and learn more about why trees are so vital to our health and well being. Copies of ‘LEAF’, a beautifully illustrated newspaper, produced by the Woodland Trust to mark its special year, are freely available. All of the countries’ Tree Charter Branches, including our own, can be seen on the Charter Branch Map of the website www.woodlandtrust. org

Tigers washed out SHEFFIELD's scheduled Sunday bumper double-header at Owlerton against Ipswich and Redcar had to be postponed. With rain surrounding the area, plus a poor forecast for the afternoon into the evening, bosses made the early call to minimise inconvenience for all parties. New arrangements have been swiftly agreed for the re-staging dates which are as follows: Thursday, September 14 DOUBLE HEADER Sheffield v Edinburgh followed by Sheffield v Ipswich Supporters should note the slightly earlier start time of 7.00pm. Monday, September 18
REUNITED: Jamie Vardy and Stocksbridge PS Chairman Allen Bethel Photo: Pete Revitt Sky TV’s documentary series The Next Jamie Vardy, which documents the efforts of his V9 academy in unearthing hidden talent in nonleague football and giving them a chance to earn professional contracts. Former Stocksbridge Park Steels player Vardy, who Leicester City signed for £1m from Fleetwood Town in 2012, allowed the cameras into his home to film the documentary, which also looks at his own meteoric rise from non-league football.
slip because you think you are going to be a footballer so you have nothing to fall back on. “Having to go straight into work to earn money while playing part-time helped me build myself as a player and started me on this journey. “Everyone has their own route in but definitely in non-league it toughens you up. “When I was at Stocksbridge if I wasn’t being kicked around that field then there was something wrong with the opposition.
Vardy told the Leicester Mercury “Meeting these players and hearing their stories brought back a lot of memories as well.
“I was small and the easy target, but the main thing for me was to get back up and put the ball in the net. That shut them up.”
“I was in that exact position myself years ago and knowing that the hard work does pay off. They have to work their socks off to get in the position where they have a chance.”
Above all, Vardy told the hopefuls on his V9 course that they had to maintain belief in themselves.
Vardy was released by Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager but rebuilt his career in the hustle and bustle of non-league football with Stocksbridge Park Steels. He says that is what has made him the player he is today. “It was probably the making of me,” he said. “Once you get released your bubble is burst. You have already started to let your school grades
“You are going to get doubters whatever you do. To be honest with you when I first moved from Fleetwood to Leicester I doubted myself a bit in the first year as well. The England international made an emotional return to Stocksbridge last month where he met up with club officials and toured round the ground where he spent seven successful seasons. The Next Jamie Vardy documentary is on Sky 1 from Saturday, September 16, at 11.30am.
Last gasp equaliser denies Steels Stocksbridge PS 2-2 Alvechurch
By Jamie Grayson – www.nonleagueyorkshire.com
Matt Reay thought he had won it for Stocksbridge Park Steels with a late header, but it wasn’t to be as Alvechurch netted a last gasp equaliser. The Steels led twice in the end-to-end encounter at Look Loccal stadium which certainly entertained the masses. The draw keeps Stocksbridge’s recent unbeaten run going. Although Chris Hilton disagreed, Stocksbridge were poor in the first half. Twice goalkeeper David Reay saved his team’s bacon with saves from goalbound efforts from Bekir Halli. The only moment where the Steels troubled their visitors was when Scott Ruthven hit the crossbar with a header. The second half was a different story. Stocksbridge were much more brighter going forward and they
soon got the breakthrough. Their talisman Joe Lumsden, the predatory goal-scorer, broke clear and scored with a composed finish. That’s how it remained until the frantic last 15 minutes. Admittably an Alvechurch equaliser did seem inevitable and it came via a Daniel Dubidat header. The Steels recovered their lead with just a matter of minutes remaining – Reay’s bouncing header from Rory Coleman’s free kick sparked scenes of jubilation. Steels coach Lee Thompson’s sprint down the touchline showed just what it meant to them. However, Alvechurch had the last word – Josh March scoring at the back post with a free header. Stocksbridge PS: D Reay, Charlesworth, Grayson, Wiles, McFadyen (captain), Litchfield, Stirrup, Lumsden (Rhodes 89), Ruthven, Coleman. Subs unused: Salmons, Thompson, Laight, Greaves.
The Window Centre Tigers drew first blood in heat three courtesy of a 5-1 from Lasse Bjerre and guest Ryan Douglas who was standing in for Josh Bates after failing a late fitness test with a shoulder problem following a fall at home. Sheffield boss Simon Stead said: “Of course we’re very disappointed because we wanted to keep our winning streak going for as long as we possibly could. “Luck appeared to be on our side but we didn’t take advantage and credit where it’s due, we were eventually beaten by the better side on the night. “If we try and search for a positive then of course it’s that we were still able to add to our tally against a tough Redcar side. And when you consider we were without both Tood (Kurtz) and Josh (Bates) that’s not a bad effort at all on reflection.
Sheffield v Redcar Supporters should note the slightly later start time of 7.45. Before the weekend Tigers let a six point lead slip as they suffered a 48-42 defeat at Redcar. It means their run of successive league wins comes to an end at 14 after being forced to settle for a consolation league point at the Media Prima Arena.

Oughtibridge start with big win Mansfield 0-7 Oughtibridge Ladies Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies started life in the East Midlands Regional Premier League with a superb 7-0 midweek victory at Mansfield Hosiery Mills, some slick passing football leading to goals from new signing Kathryn Madge (2), Codi Melia (2), Annie Longmore (2) and Bex Shaw. Other new signings, Laura Watton, Kirsty Walton and Fran Godbehere settled in well with only blot being a bad foot injury being picked by Jenny Selman following one of a number over physical challenges by the home team, the referee surprisingly deeming a yellow card to be sufficient. They followed this up with a solid
3-0 home victory in the League Cup against Derby based Woodlands FC, Melia and Longmore again on target with the biggest cheers being for Lauren Turner's much deserved goal on her return to the team. It was also a big day for the Oughtibridge WM Ladies Development team as they played their first ever game in the Sheffield and Hallamshire County League, but despite a very good performance they went down 2-1 to a last minute winner from Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Chelsea Wall on target for Oughtibridge and the ever reliable Bridie Pitsch putting in a player of the match performance.
