CONCERN GROWS FOR MISSING WOMAN

POLICE in Sheffield are asking drivers in the Ecclesfield area with dashcams for their help, as they continue their search for Angela Simmonite. Angela, 57, was reported missing from the Hilton Drive area of Ecclesfield on Saturday November 25 and has not been seen or heard from since. Officers believe she left the area between 5am to 9am and are becoming increasingly concerned for her welfare.

They are now asking drivers with dash-cams who were in Ecclesfield that morning and over the weekend to contact them, if they have footage that shows Angela. PC Dave Culshaw said: “An extensive CCTV trawl is now underway to try and piece together Angela’s movements since she left her home address in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Musicathon for Children in Need LOCAL musician Dave Friskney held yet another of his musicathons at the Wortley Arms last Friday, raising £325 for Children in Need. The 73-year-old Deepcar resident has been involved in fundraising for years, with a particular habit of playing for long periods. This started for him in the 80s when he flew to 11 airports in 12 hours performing with Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir. Since then, he took up the cause of Stocksbridge Advice Centre and has also raised money for

the Tsunami Appeal, Bradfield public toilets, Prostate Cancer and an ITV Telethon. The fundraisers have taken many forms, including playing 12 pubs in 12 hours and singing whilst walking round Bradfield – although this had to be cut short due to terrible weather. His latest event saw him play for 12 hours, joined by a number of musician friends. The former steelworker says he has no intention of stopping.

HIGH Green Primary School is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the Gold Mark in the Sainsbury’s School Games Award for their work towards physical education. As a school, they had a very successful year in regards to everything P.E. related with a few highlights being the KS2 boys and girls football champions, Year Four tag rugby county

champions and Year Six tag rugby winners for the second year in a row. Pupils were also chosen to attend the Sky Sports Living for Sport event, and their KS1 team were runners-up in a football competition. There was another great routine at the dance performance too. However, it is not all about winning and the school is proud to say that 88% of children at High

Green attended an extra-curricular sporting competition or after school club last academic year. Mr Gregory, the P.E. co-ordinator, said: “Without the children putting themselves forward none of the things that have happened would have been made possible, so I’d like to say a big thank you to all of them.”

New venture brings tales of life love and death in South Yorkshire IN a unique family initiative, the grandchildren of noted local author Phyllis Crossland are reissuing her landmark local saga ‘Echoing Hills’ to mark the 50th anniversary of her first published work. Will Tomson, one of the author’s grandsons, has re-designed the cover and Charles Fox has presented information which makes it relevant to our age. Mr Edwin Parr of Bridge Publications, who first published Echoing Hills, said “I am delighted to support this important re-launch. It displays Mrs Crossland’s deep love for the area and is one of her best.”

It tells how three generations of country folk in the Upper Don Valley eked a living out of the soil two hundred years ago. The story starts when Stocksbridge was no more than a crossing over a peaceful river. The tale vividly captures the pleasures and perils of country life. It recounts local legends such as a mysterious disappearance following an encounter with poisonous mushrooms, innocent children being caught in man traps and a tragic fire at the local hall. A central ‘character’ in Echoing Hills is Trunce Farm in Green Moor which is still being

farmed by the sixth and seventh generation of the Fox family; direct descendants of the characters of 1774 described so vividly in the book. You can obtain your copy of Echoing Hills from The Art House, Penistone, or the Post Offices in Wortley or Oxspring. It’s also available from Thorpe’s Garage in Thurgoland, Samuel’s Kitchen in Stocksbridge, Cannon Hall and other outlets. Alternatively you can contact Rose Tomson on 07702 196961 or tomsonrose@hotmail.com. The date of the official re-launch will be announced shortly.

Hillsborough student’s ‘cowgirl granny’ photos make national news SAMANTHA Devine is making headlines after returning to studying later in life and discovering Yorkshire’s ‘cowgirl granny’. Her photographs of Rocky have just featured in the Times and on Sky News as part of a news story about her coursework subject’s unusual lifestyle. Samantha, aged 46, is completing a BA Honours Degree in Creative Practice at The Sheffield College’s Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street. Samantha met Rocky one weekend in a café on the Pennine Way in Barnsley after she arrived on horseback to have tea there. Rocky wears a traditional hat, fringe jacket and trousers, and lives a cowgirl lifestyle on a ranch, tending to horses and sleeping under the stars when she can. “At the time,” continued Samantha, “I was looking for a subject for my course portrait practice and immediately recognised

that Rocky would be a great subject. I arranged to visit her at her ranch and spent a few hours taking photographs.” The next day, Samantha shared them on Facebook and a contact for the Yorkshirebased news agency Guzelian got in touch to see if she would take some more for a news story for the Times. She said: “I was absolutely over the moon about my work being published in the Times. It felt a bit surreal.” Samantha gave up a career in the public sector when a member of her family became seriously ill, so that she could look after them. She used to work for the Department of Work and Pensions in Sheffield and then the children’s services department at Bradford Council in West Yorkshire. When her relative recovered, she decided she wanted to return to studying and make up for lost time by completing a degree, and even moved to a

different part of the city so that she could live closer to the College’s Hillsborough campus to be nearer to the facilities. She said: “I love the college course. The staff are really knowledgeable and supportive, and the facilities and equipment that we work with are great. It’s really developed my skills as a photographer. My ambition is to specialise in biographical storytelling, and use those skills in a therapeutic way by working with older people and memory enhancement.” Paul Clarkson, Lecturer, The Sheffield College, said: “Inspirational students such as Samantha demonstrate that it is possible to return to education, develop new skills and change career direction. Our university level courses transform lives through learning. Samantha has shown she is creative, talented and hard working, and deserves every success in her future career.”

Cinnamon Trust seeks Ecclesfield volunteers THE Cinnamon Trust needs volunteers in the Ecclesfield Area. The Cinnamon Trust is the national charity whose wonderful volunteers help people over retirement age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness by offering all kinds of pet care. They urgently need volunteers in the Ecclesfield area who are able to help a lo-

cal resident with some walks for their two adorable male Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, feeling that their only option is to re-home them, this is where The Cinnamon Trust’s national network of

dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. They’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, foster pets when owners need hospital care, fetch the cat food and even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. Registered Charity number 1134680, The Cinnamon Trust is a limited company registered in England and Wales.

Take a magic carpet ride with High Green theatre group

JUMP on board a magical carpet ride to Peking with High Green Musical Theatre Group as their annual high flying top notch story festive pantomime is only a lamp rub away. Aladdin is a time-honoured classic and this year’s cast will be putting their own spin on the story of true love triumphing over evil. Like all good pantomimes, there will be thrills and spills along the way, Aladdin will fall for the evil Abanazers tricks whilst Princess Jasmine try’s to avoid her father finding her a royal husband.

•uk

The audience will be invited to put their energies into supporting the good-guy and undermining the evil Abanazer who is responsible for setting up the whole sorry situation.

This year the starring roles are taken by Sydney Goodhand playing Princess Jasmine and Lyndsay Cook playing Aladdin. Abanazar, otherwise known as John Gallagher, has been with the group for several years and sharp-eyed members of the audience may remember him as Doctor Prosphero from their last production of Return to the Forbidden Planet. He said: “With Aladdin currently being such a hit in the West End, we’ve made this version our own and brought it to the local community. Anyone who comes along should expect some fun. “It’s ideal for families and we hope people will take the chance to introduce younger children to the experience of live theatre.” Widow Twanky managed to move her laundry for the day

to St Michaels Dry Cleaners, Ecclesfield, to help out with the photo-shoot for the panto and seen here from left to right are, Kieran Hinsley, Dave Kettlewell, Lylah-Ann Gregory, Paula Beech, Rebeca Burners and Chloe Bech. The show takes place as normal at the EPPiC Theatre in Well Lane, Ecclesfield, from Monday December 11 to Saturday December 16. Tickets are on sale now from the Box Office 01142403839. The theatre group will be celebrating its 70th year next year and will be commemorating this with a special production in June. It has been organising pantomimes since 1980 and relies on ticket sales to help meet the costs of running the theatre, with all cast members and those in backstage roles acting as volunteers.

Penistone play parks get a boost from developers’ money PENISTONE parks are benefitting from the latest round of Section 106 money, secured by Barnsley Council from local developers. Nine projects are set to receive over £300,000 of funding to develop and improve some of Barnsley’s parks and play areas. Church View Road Play Area in Penistone will be refurbished thanks to £31,753 funding.

Penistone Recreation Ground will benefit from £30,000 to upgrade the play space and kick about area. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re working hard to help people to lead healthier, happier and more active lives. These enhancements are great for local communities and will provide more opportunities for children, young people and adults to enjoy our green spaces

and get involved in sport and active recreation.” Area Councils, Community Groups and public representatives liaise with council officers to identify suitable S106 projects. A dedicated panel then meets every quarter to review each proposed scheme. For a project to be approved, it must have available S106 money and contribute to the council priorities.

BARNSLEY BARD VISITS SCHOOL

Ace holiday for Bridge group MEMBERS of the Stocksbridge Bridge Group visited North Wales last week for their annual Bridge Break competition.

The group normally meets every Tuesday afternoon at The Venue in Stocksbridge and we welcome new players, no partner needed.

Lots of bridge was played but we also took time to visit nearby places such as Conwy Castle, Bodnant Gardens and Llandudno. The eventual winner of the competition was David Hydes who had also organised the break.

They are a friendly group of retired and semiretired people who enjoy the social side of our sessions as well as playing bridge. If you are interested in joining them. please contact Bob Smith on 0114 2888624 or email smithr383@gmail.com.

Be a knight in shining armour

POET Ian McMillan and musician Luke Carver Goss visited Shooters Grove School in Stannington on Friday December 10.

ECCLESFIELD Priory Players are currently rehearsing a farce, Wild Goose Chase by Derek Benfield, which will be staged in February.

Stannington Tenants & Residents Association and Stannington Library worked together with the school to put the special visit together.

They are desperately in need of a suit of armour that can be worn for the play! If anyone has one lurking in the back of the wardrobe that they would be willing to loan to them for the duration of the play, contact them on 0114 2402624.

The pair went on to visit Stannington Library before presenting their live show to a most appreciative audience in the Lomas Hall that evening.

£500 reward after Ecclesfield vandals bring railway to standstill MINDLESS vandals who placed railway cable across the tracks and brought the railway network to a standstill in Sheffield are being sought by Police. The British Transport Police are now appealing for information in relation to the incident, which took place at around 9.45pm in Ecclesfield, and Northern Rail have put forward a reward of £500 for any information that leads to a conviction. A window of one of the passenger services was also smashed during the incident. Luckily noone was injured but the incident caused huge delays to passengers from both services who had to

be taken off the trains and continue their journeys via taxi and minibus paid for by Northern Rail. Sergeant Andy Selby said: “As we’ve witnessed from this incident, cable theft has a huge impact on the railway network and leads to lengthy and disruptive journeys to passengers. Not to mention the significant financial impact of having to replace stolen or damaged cable, damaged trains and pay for alternative travel. “If you were in the Ecclesfield area on Sunday evening and saw anything suspicious or have any information which may help us identify those responsible, please contact us.” Chris Jackson, Head of Trains and Stations for Northern, said: “It’s truly unbelievable that people will do anything as mindless as this.

“It’s only through good fortune that no-one was injured as a result of this senseless vandalism. “We are committed to working with our colleagues at BTP to trace those responsible and are offering £500 to anyone with information which leads to a conviction.” Vickie Beadle, community safety manager at Network Rail, said: “This type of behaviour is incredibly dangerous and people need to realise that the railway is not a playground. This incident is completely unacceptable and caused unnecessary disruption for those simply trying to get home.” You can pass information by sending a text to 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 514 of 19/11. Alternatively, ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Daniel Ryan is presented with the Jack Oxspring Trophy THE Stocksbridge and District Golf Club annual prize presentation and dinner were held at the club house on Saturday November 18. This event is the culmination of the season’s golf and almost all the winners attended, along with partners, family, club officials and directors. Many hours were put in by staff and volunteers to decorate the club for this festive occasion. The Club President Mr John Yeates, Club Captain Mick Meegan and Ladies Captain Kath Busfield presented the Trophies to the proud recipients.

Bouquets were presented to president’s wife Andrea Yeates, captain’s wife Christine Meegan and Lady Captain Kath Busfield. The dinner was excellent and the evening continued with much merriment and dancing. Yorkshire Ladies Foursomes winners Kath Busfield and Margaret Pearson were presented with their trophy and they will look to successfully defend it in 2018. Both the gent’s and ladies championships are played for over a number of competitions throughout the year and therefore consistency is the key.

The overall club champions were Paul Ryan and Helen Moffett, both fairly recent additions to the membership. Overall the trophies were won by both new and well established players and the club hopes this gives encouragement to all our members. Thanks to all our members and staff for their support through 2017 and the club would like to wish you many good golf days in 2018.

Non-league round-up Hemsworth MWFC 2-3 High Green Villa.FC HIGH Green Villa ran out worthy winners in this Division One second v third clash. Following early pressure after 25 minutes, Vella opened the scoring from close range for Villa with the score 0-1 at the interval. In the early stages of the second half Villa dominated play and missed enough chances to have sewn the game up, before Jacobs volleyed a great goal from 20 yards to make the score 0-2 in the 65th minute. Hemsworth replied immediately before Jacobs added his second to secure the points for Villa. Hemsworth scored a second goal late in the game. A good all round team performance with Moorehouse a constant threat in attack and Jacobs as man of the match. Saturday December 2 sees High Green Villa FC play Grimethorpe Sports FC in the cup with a 1pm kick off.

Oughtibridge War Memorial 6-3 Chapeltown OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial’s men’s team took on Chapeltown and it was Oughtibridge who started the brighter but with Tom Fletcher and Callum Chambers missing great chances, it was the away side the raced in to an early two-goal lead with Vella and then Gunter. Oughtibridge management Dave Hudson and Danny Hill then changed the formation which immediately paid off, first with Ollie Blacks’ superb turn and shot from just outside the area before and then midfielder Danny Booth with an unstoppable shot just before the break with a great strike from 25 yards.

In the second half, the home side were now playing some great football and soon took the lead when the excellent Josh Walker finished off a great move. Vella again scored to bring the game level. The ‘Bridge were now in full flow and a fourth was added when Callum Chambers and then Justin Westoby raced through from the half way line to make it five. Finally Chambers scored his second from the penalty spot to make it 6-3 and keep Oughtibridge’s unbeaten league record going.

Nettleham Ladies 0-0 Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies The ladies travelled to East Midlands Premier League leaders Nettleham and came away with a creditable point from a 0-0 draw. Whilst it ended their 10-game winning run it was most definitely a point gained with keeper Coran Wright putting in another faultless performance. The War Memorial Ladies got off to a shaky start and struggled to make any headway in the first half but did enough to restrict the home side to half chances. The second half continued in the same vein but with fresh legs coming off a strong bench, combined with Nettleham running out of steam, the game evened out and Oughtibridge nearly snatched it at the death but it ended in stalemate. The result leaves Oughtibridge third, three points behind Nettleham and Leicester City but with two games in hand on each.

Sport & Motors Hinchcliffe comfortable winner over 10km in Barnsley road race

SCOTT Hinchcliffe of Penistone Footpath Runners won the prestigious Barnsley 10km road race held at Royston at the weekend in a time of 32.54. Hinchcliffe led from the off and ran the race mostly on his own, finishing a clear minute and a half of the second placed runner. Gareth Cooke was the second PFR runner home in sixth place and, with Robert Lees, the trio made up the winning men’s team. First lady home for the club was Laura Gill with a big personal best of 42.32. Matt Robinson finished first V50, Steve Storey finished second M60 and Julie Moxon second F45. There was a large turnout from the club, this being the final road race in this year’s club championship. Mark Riordan ran a personal best over the half marathon distance at Clowne, Derbyshire, in a time of 87:44 on the undulating course. At the Famous Grouse fell race in Hayfield, Derbyshire, run over five miles with 1,250 feet of climbs, Damian Kilpin finished third in 39.39 with Adrian Tarasuik 34th in 51.22.

Church in fine away win Clipstone FC 1-2 Penistone Church

PENISTONE Church FC beat Clipstone FC 2-1 away from home in Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead by half time with Kieran Ryan and veteran Andy Ring both on target. Clipstone pulled one back through a spectacular Ben Rogers strike in the 52nd minute and both teams had a player sent off but the visitors held on for all three points. Manager Ian Richards said after the game: “Ultimately we are in a results business so it’s great to get the three points and to get our first league away win of the season which we thoroughly deserved on the balance of play. “I wanted someone to do the shot count and efforts on goal we’ve had thirty plus and we must have had double figures of corners. Today wasn’t our day in front of goal when on other days we look like we score every time. “Some poor decision making in front of goal, final passes, great saves or clearances off the line by them have prevented us winning very comfortably. “We said at half time if you don’t convert your chances they will get that chance and they will score a worldy from far out and they did that - a 30-yard volley that you can’t save. “I’m disappointed because a bitter part of the game was Jordan Coduri’s sending off. I think he was unfortunate because he wasn’t the instigator.”

PIGS LOSE TO STRONG NORTHALLERTON SIDE Northallerton 36-0 Stocksbridge IT was a weekend to forget for Stocksbridge RUFC as they lost 36-0 to promotion-chasing Northallerton away from home. Northallerton would be top of the league if it wasn’t for a five-point deduction but they are still in second and playing very well. The defeat sees Stocksbridge second from bottom in the Yorkshire Three table.

LITCHFIELD RESCUES STEELS WITH DRAMATIC WINNER Stocksbridge PS 4-3 Loughborough Dynamo By James Grayson (www.nonleagueyorkshire.com) BRODIE Litchfield’s dramatic last minute winner in the epic battle with Loughborough Dynamo pushed Stocksbridge Park Steels to the brink of the automatic promotion places. The Steels are now third and a point off second spot after winning 4-3 in a game which had seen them take a 3-0 second half lead. The Steels threw that away and were fortunate that Litchfield was primed to be the hero of Look Local Stadium. Jack Poulton’s free kick and Matt Reay’s header placed the Steels into a solid half-time lead. WINNER: Brodie Litchfield was the last-gasp star. Pic: Pete Revitt.

The job looked done when Scott Ruthven added the third. But then Loughborough hit back and levelled the scores. Luckily Litchfield popped up.
