HISTORIC CHURCH SCOOPS GRANT ST MARY’S Church in Ecclesfield, a Grade 1 listed building, has received confirmation of a grant of £220,000 for major repairs to the church roof and the installation of a state of the art security system. The grant, when VAT is taken into account, will fund work costing £250,000. The building is one of only five Grade 1 listed buildings in the whole city and has recently been given “Major Parish Church” status. Serious deterioration to the Nave and Nave aisle rooves was identified over two years ago resulting in the building being put on the “At Risk” register. Temporary patching has kept most of the weather out but the grant ensures that permanent repairs to the wood and protective covering of the roofs can be carried out and will be complemented by a new sophisticated security system as well as improvements to the

experience for visitors and school groups visiting the building.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has been involved in the work from an early planning stage. A part of the grant was released in 2016 to enable the architect and experts to investigate the state of the roof and to design a solution; the resulting design was then put out to tender. It is believed that a church has stood on the site of St. Mary’s since 500AD. The early parts of the current building date back to 1200 when it was built by the monks of St. Wandrille near Rouen in France. They came over and built the Priory and lived there whilst building the Church. The building was significantly changed again between 1470 and 1500 and much of the exterior of the building dates from then. It is an unusually large building for a village and has a great beauty with large majestic

windows which once held medieval glass now fitted with Victorian stained panels.

The church continues to run a full range of services with different styles to suit everyone with music from a good pipe organ and choir, a music group and recorded music. The church remains at the heart of the community hosting weddings, baptisms and funeral services. The Church is well used by the community with regular coffee mornings each Tuesday and Friday. The local schools make frequent visits for their own services at Easter, Harvest and Christmas and also visit as part of their education curriculum. The local community groups including Village in Bloom, Ecclesfield Park Group and the local Conservation and History Group use the Church for coffee mornings and events; at Christmas each year, the local community

organises carols around the Christmas tree followed by coffee and treats in Church. At various times throughout the year craft afternoons are held for children – parents drop them off and collect them later. The children all enjoy it and become regular

visitors to the Church on these occasions.

searching for information of their relatives for family trees.

The Church is also used for Concerts with recent events including - Emley Brass Band, the Master Singers and Grenoside Singers. History groups visit the church and we have many visitors from abroad

A heritage weekend is held once a year and hosts many visitors seeking historical information. Reverend Tim Gill said: “St. Mary’s is extremely grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund, enabling the building to con-

tinue to be at the heart of Ecclesfield as it will be water tight once again. “We can now be sure that this wonderful building will stand for generations to come. This is not an ancient monument, it is a living breathing well used building at the heart of the local community.”

cra, we were ready to start our teaching positions in the school. After a 13-hour bus journey to the region, we were introduced to our host homes which were made out of mud bricks and were fitted with tin roofs. Water was collected from a borehole that was located nearby where the women would carry around 20kg of water on their heads with a child strapped to their back. “These women were incredibly strong and would work tirelessly collecting the crops then preparing the food in the evenings. “The kids would start early in the school at around 7.30am. The kids would receive lessons in the core subjects such as ICT and Math’s before we would start our own clubs. Our school in the community of Nimbare-kompore (Nim-Kom) had no running water or electricity. “For ICT most of the kids had never even seen a computer so we had to chalk draw a mouse, keyboard etc. and then describe what their functions are. The teaching was a challenge at times as the levels of English most kids could speak was pretty low. However having a teacher on hand to translate into Dagaari or using body language normally got you by. “The kids were really enthusiastic and participated in all activities in large numbers. Whether that was our reading, art or sports clubs they would be keen to learn. Whilst we were in the community for three months we worked alongside other NGOs and Ghanaian counterparts to raise the importance of education and to also raise funds for providing infrastructure into the school. “After liaising with district official we were able to fund the wiring to the classrooms and begin the process of achieving electricity supply to the grid. This involved doing a community march involving public speaking and organizing cultural dancing as entertainment for our event.

A NORTH Sheffield man has spoken of his recent volunteering work in Africa where he has been working to tackle poverty. Former Bradfield School pupil Oliver Bell has been taking part in the International Citizens Service (ICS) in Ghana and says it was a challenging and rewarding experience that he will not forget.

Oliver told Look Local: “For any young person between the ages of 18 and 25 in our community, I would fully recommend that they get involved with a project that will push them outside their comfort zone.

Penistone FM to host open day PENISTONE FM is having an open day on Penistone Market day on January 18, from 10am to 2pm, and this is your opportunity to go and see the studios in the heart of Penistone in the Penistone One building on St. Mary’s Street. If your New Year’s resolution is to be more involved in the community, you will have the opportunity to hear more about the new training project ‘My Town, My Community’ in collaboration with Love Where You Live, and funded by Penistone Working Together. The project is focused at people in the community who have recently retired but wish to continue to develop their skills and gain a qualification in radio; you do not need any prior media experience. This will allow more people to get involved in volunteering at the station and in the local community around Penistone; there are various roles from voicing community news items, interviewing and editing and presenting your own live show. Phil Johnson, who has recently completed his training and is now broadcasting a weekly live show, said: “This is a course, which for me, opened up several of the wider aspects of radio broadcasting. “The course created a good background to the technicalities, jargon and operations of radio.”

Supertram link services retained following local consultation AT a time when government and private business are pulling in their belts, the announcement of a public consultation in relation to proposed changes to the SL1 Supertram link bus service filled many people locally with trepidation, fearing that the service frequency would be cut and the route would be adversely impacted.

dents, Stocksbridge Town Council, backed by the local transport forum headed up by Cllr Julie Grocutt, met several times with Stagecoach and other local transport bodies to stress the acute need for Stocksbridge to have competent public transport capabilities, whilst understanding that footfall is impacting Stagecoach’s bottom line.

Alongside the consultation, which received over 450 responses from resi-

One of the main sticking points related to the retention of the current alternate

clockwise and anti-clockwise route that buses take around Stocksbridge and Deepcar. Having a single repeatable route in place is significantly more cost and time efficient for bus companies. Julie, together with Sheffield City and Stocksbridge Town Councillor Alan Law, worked to retain the service that 78% of people had requested in the consultation.

As well as the retention of the “both ways” service, the evening service will continue to cover Garden Village and Unsliven Bridge, simultaneously removing the extension to Hillsborough which had been added on evenings and had proven unpopular in feedback. Alongside retention, there was a commitment from Stagecoach to actively improve early evening connections for Middlewood Park and Ride and there

will be more frequent buses up until around 8pm, moving to an hourly service after 9pm. Full details of the consultation can be found on the Stagecoach website at https://www.stagecoachbus.com/ promos-and-offers/yorkshire/ sl1consultationoct17

Student’s Christmas cup design brings festive cheer

Department For Lifelong Learning.

Mature Student

TASTER EVENT

6 FREE taster sessions for adults thinking about University study. Thursday 25th January 2018, 9:30am to 12pm

WINNER: Michael, 17, came up with a festive design for Hillsborough College’s coffee cups. MICAHEL Morton, aged 17, has created a Christmas themed coffee cup as part of a competition brief set by the College.

Your journey starts here. At this event you can: • Choose up to 2 taster sessions in subjects relating to Arts and Humanities, Social Science, and Science • Meet current mature students, support staff, and tutors from DLL • Enjoy free refreshments • Take part in an optional campus tour from 12pm To find out more or register for this event: Visit www.sheffield.ac.uk/dll/taster Call 0114 222 7000 Email dlloutreach@sheffield.ac.uk Follow us on twitter @ShefUniDLL

His winning design features a red mug sleeve decorated with Christmas trees, presents, snowmen, holly and snow. The competition was open to students completing the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design) course. The brief to design a Christmas cup was set by the College’s marketing team as part of a social media advent calendar campaign for the festive season. Michael’s design is now on cup sleeves of hot drinks served from two mobile Lavazza vans, based at City and Hillsborough campuses, which are popular with staff and students.

Michael said: “My cup design took inspiration from the existing College branding - a flat minimal style with curved forms, which is simple yet effective. I’m really happy I won the competition. Seeing my design on a physical product is really exciting, and I enjoyed the experience of taking part.” Michael’s ambition after finishing college is to pursue a career in graphic design and he is already completing some freelance work. To view Michael’s portfolio, visit behance.net/michaelmorton. Kelly Edwards, Course Leader, The Sheffield College, said: “Our students benefit from opportunities to develop their skills on employer set projects to get them ready for the world of work. “Michael’s appealing, professional design really captured the spirit of Christmas and strongly delivered on the brief.”

Are you off to see the Wizard of Odd? LINGERIE, NIGHTWEAR & SWIMWEAR BOUTIQUE www.frilliesboutique.co.uk shop@frilliesboutique.co.uk 4 Bridge Street, Penistone, S36 6AJ 01226 496781

IF you’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz, then the Thurgoland Thespian version could be right up your yellow brick road. For in typical panto style, the Thurgoland production has taken the conventional Wizard of Oz storyline, re- written for Pantomime by Gavyn Lugsden and tweaked it to bring it into the 21st century and making it more relevant to the Thurgoland community. To begin with, the Munchkins look and act considerably like Minions with the dancers adopting one of the key Despicable Me movie soundtracks for their opening number. Even the lead role of Dorothy, conventionally the character for the principal Girl, has been replaced with the more elderly and the less petite figure of David Denton as the pantomime dame. The creative mind and director behind this unique production, Nick Hibberd, said: “In many ways it is the same conventional story of Dorothy that we’ve purchased off Smith Scripts, but by

giving the Dame the title role as Dorothy, we have been able to embellish and develop the Character, extending the role to that far beyond that of the usual ‘Wizard of Oz’ storyline - with hilarious effect. “As an example, Dorothy’s hand bag accessory and pet dog, ToTo, is no longer the adorable puppy that Judy Garland starred alongside, but is now a much older dog with a slight bladder problem - much to the disgust of those sitting in the first five rows – and to the humour of the rest of the audience. “It’s not fair to say that the dog has a weak bladder as that is some pressure to be able to cover such a long distance,” Nick joked. And there aren’t many productions that can span the decades musically and get away with it, with music from 1939 right through to the noughties and beyond. Even the traditional audience participation number has been replaced with a more modern riff off as two sides of the chorus battle it out on stage in Pitch Perfect style.

“This year we have over 40 members taking part, with each chorus member having at least one line to recall as the story unfolds. Rehearsals have been running since early October with the first show due to start on Wednesday January 17, running through to Saturday January 20. “This has been a gruelling programme with extra rehearsals having to be introduced postChristmas as we are set to go live two weeks earlier than other years. I am very proud of the efforts that have been put in by everyone involved and, hopefully, this will be fully appreciated by the audience,” concluded Nick. Tickets for the Wednesday and Thursday evening shows at the Thurgoland Village Hall are just £2 for children and £4 per adult. These rise by £2 for the more popular Friday and Saturday shows, with a matinee and evening performances on the Saturday. Tickets are available by calling 0114 453 5139 or by contacting Nick Hibberd at Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall on 01226 381006, where he is the Village Hall Manager.

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

(NĂŠe Yeardley) Aged 84 passed away peacefully in hospital on the 1st January 2018. Beloved Wife to Paul, loving Mum, Nannie and Great Nannie.

THE world’s first dockless bike hire scheme has expanded to Sheffield on January 9 with a fleet of 1,000 bikes – the largest and fastest such launch in the UK so far.

provides a valuable and reliable service for the public.

Adam Rose, Ofo’s operations manager for Sheffield, said: “Ofo is set to stir up the way Sheffield residents travel in their city. Dockless bikes give people options that can challenge the private car. Like countless cities across the UK, Sheffield is marred by air pollution problems, often caused by congestion. By bringing Ofo to Sheffield we are offering a clean, affordable and practical alternative.

Sheffield Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability, said: “Ofo coming to Sheffield is great news for this city. This type of bike sharing is set to change the way we get from A-to-B for the better. Not only will Ofo provide an affordable and convenient transport option for many, but it will also promote the fantastic health benefits of cycling – reducing air pollution and boosting healthy lifestyles.

“Ofo harnesses the fantastic potential of cutting-edge technology but combines it with the classic utility of the bicycle – something which I’m sure will appeal to the residents of a vibrant and thriving city like Sheffield.

“Sheffield Council has been working closely with Ofo to ensure that dockless bikes are used responsibly and considerately following their introduction. That’s why we support Ofo’s approach of gradually increasing the bikes on Sheffield streets after gauging usage patterns. This will help Ofo bikes serve the right areas and the right people – enriching and supplementing Sheffield’s existing transport options.

The company is leading the way on responsible operation of dockless bike sharing, working closely with Sheffield City Council to ensure the scheme

Footpath Runners in Yorkshire Championships and face off against Gold Medal winner

Local Sport

The male representatives at the Yorkshire XC Championships. L-R Gary Dean, Hugh Mackie, SImon Pike, Richard Mackie FIVE athletes from Penistone Footpath Runners competed at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Lightwater Valley on Saturday.

Hugh Mackie finished 43rd in the under 15 boys race and Morgan Crussell finished 59th in the under 15 girls race. In the senior men’s race, Richard Mackie finished 126th, Simon Pike finished 175th, and Gary Dean 226th over the

tough, tufty, muddy and gruelling sixmile course. Gareth Cooke finished second in the Central Lancashire Half Marathon in a time of 78:07 to round off yet another 100+ mile training week.

John Tomlinson competed in the Auld Lang Syne Fell Race at Haworth on New Year’s Eve, finishing 140th in 60:57. The race was won by Olympic Gold Medallist Alistair Brownlee.

At the Wormstones Fell Race near Glossop, Sarah Jones-Morris ran 47:13 for the four-mile course, with Pete Stanley finishing in 52:31 and Annie LIghtowler in 61:52.

Captain returns and Bates explains change of mind “We had a great season last year and to win the league with Sheffield was awesome, but I want to keep winning trophies with the club and hopefully defend our title this year.” Josh Bates will be riding for Sheffield this year after shelving retirement plans. The ‘Barnsley Bullet’ has issued his own statement explaining the position as he steps up preparations for the new season. He said: “I would like to clarify my position for the 2018 season. I can confirm I will be racing for Leicester in the Premiership and Sheffield in the Championship as I originally planned. “It’s fair to say I have had some personal issues to deal with which I have struggled to handle and it’s not for me to really go into the private details. “I would simply like to thank all my family, friends, sponsors and supporters for standing by me during this difficult time. “I have been back on a bike and I simply love riding Speedway. I would be foolish to throw all that away now. “I have good people around me who can support me and enable me to simply ride the bike and score as many points as possible for my teams. “I wish Speedway fans everywhere a very Happy New Year and look forward to a successful season, for Leicester, Sheffield and I hope British Speedway in general. SHEFFIELD will be led into the 2018 season by Kyle Howarth – and co-promoter Damien Bates reckons it is one of their biggest signings in recent memory. Talks to bring Howarth back to Owlerton have reached a successful conclusion with his parent club Workington.

And Bates said: “We are delighted to have Kyle back on board for another season and I’m sure our supporters are too.

“I would go as far a to say I believe Kyle is prob- The hard work continues here and now as I build ably the best signing I have made in my time as a up to March.” promoter.” Sheffield Speedway are delighted to welcome Josh Meanwhile, Howarth says he never wanted to ride back into the fold and wish him all the very best for anywhere but Sheffield as he gets set for his third a successful season as we look to defend our Championship crown. straight season with the club.

“A lot has been made about the move but we would like to thank Workington for their co-operation and personally I am genuinely delighted.

Howarth added: “It’s great news for me to be back. I’m really excited and after two solid years at Sheffield I didn’t want to be anywhere else.

The 23-year-old has now finally put pen to paper on a new deal with the Window Centre Tigers as their No.1 and captain.

A reasonable prediction of what was to come in the second half would be that the Mods would put another four or five trys past Stocksbridge as they play downhill in their favour and looked to have fitness on their side. Head coach Rhys Keenan brought the team together and asked for a game of two halves. Captain Newton added that he wanted fire in their bellies and to go out and be aggressive ball carriers. Stocksbridge restarted by receiving the ball and securing it in a ruck before Christopherson sent the ball over head followed by a chase which drew almost all of the Mods players in, this gave an open field out wide which Stocksbridge eventually took advantage of allowing Smith to score in the top left corner pulling the score back to 24-10. With the Mods supporters on the sideline starting to show attitude as mistakes were being made, Stocksbridge continued to push forward with even play from both sides. Mods then took possession and escalated downhill after a fair 10 minutes of attacking play they scored in the bottom right hand side of the pitch making it 29-10. Stocksbridge kicked back off and followed with some good line speed putting pressure on the

Mods forcing a knock on. From the scrum the ball went wide and was chipped into the top right corner where Jones chased it down and scored a try but the conversion was not made at 29-15. A penalty try saw Mods pull the lead out to 3615 and after a number of Stocksbridge players were shuffled due to cramp, Mods left an overlap which Smith took advantage of scoring a second try on the left hand side. Bowskill converted the kick to bring it back to 36-22. Stocksbridge found a second spurt of energy and attacked aggressively uphill as a team giving an overlap out wide again but Woodcock took the ball short and grounded it over the line. Conversion went over making the final score 36-29. The second half saw the score of 12-24 to Stocksbridge, the team turned the game around but ran out of time to get the win. However, they secured bonus points for getting more than four tries. There are a lot of positives to take forward from this game that the team should be proud of. Man of the match was number eight Liam O’Leary. Next week they head back to Leeds to face the Medics in search of their first win of 2018.

Church take late win, Oughtibridge hit 14 past Colley IN the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division, Penistone Church travelled to Rainworth and came away with a 2-1 win.

There were no more goals until nine minutes from time when Kieran Ryan struck to give Penistone the three points.

Jordan Coduri got Church off to a fantastic start, notching in the first minute but just six minutes later, Ross Goodwin equalised for Rainworth.

In the Blades Super Draw, Oughtibridge had a fantastic result, beating Colley Club 14-0. Oughtibridge kept their unbeaten record intact and went top of the

league with a demolition of Colley. With a keeper crisis, War Memorial manager David Hudson had to don the gloves but was merely a spectator as the visitors hit double figures for the fifth time this season. Matt Harrison hit four goals for the second game running with Josh Walker also scoring four.

Ross brown chipped in with a brace and further goals came through from Tom Fletcher, Chas Tunnard, Evan Watson and captain James Baker. This Sunday will see the visit of currently unbeaten Chapeltown at the War Memorial which is sure to be a cracking local derby. Kick off is 11am.

Annie Longmore, on for the injured Rodgers at half time, set up a good counter attack as Oughtibridge played on the break but just when the worst was over United pulled one back on 62 minutes.

Famous win for War Memorial Ladies

With the game now in the balance Oughtibridge looked for a third but Turner’s angled effort was met by a superb save from Jess Houldsworth. The game boiled over on 68 minutes as Jorden Spurr saw red for the Blades for a late challenge on Oughtibridge play maker Kathryn Mudge, the Blades player clearly distraught as she left the pitch. But United continued to press and after some missed clearances a glorious chance came their way but Coran Wright made a superb double save to maintain the lead. Oughtibridge had thrown on the speedy left sided Karla

Burton and midfield enforcer Fran Godbehere to stem the tide and they went close again through Turner and Mudge before enduring a nervy final 10 minutes as United’s fitness kicked in but they held out for a famous victory, met with rapturous applause from a bumper crowd. It’s hard to pick a player of the match in what was a superb team effort but Jen Selman was outstanding, having her best game since returning from a long injury lay off. The Ladies host Leicester City in the league next Sunday, January 14th, before a quarter final County Cup tie at home to Wakefield on January 21.

Oughtibridge War Memorial Ladies 2 Sheffield United 1 OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies produced a tremendous performance to topple high-flying Sheffield United Ladies and cause a major upset in the third round of the County Cup with a 2-1 win. Credit must go to both teams and the referee Natasha Wilson for getting the game played on a thawing but difficult surface. Oughtibridge started brightly in a more defensive than usual 4-5-1 but with the midfield dominating it was no surprise

when Lauren Turner sped onto a through ball by Laura Wattton to clip it past the keeper for 1-0 in the 11th minute. United were clearly rattled but continued to try and pass their way up the pitch but Chloe Rodgers at right back snuffed out most threats and from one of her clearances the ball found its way to Codi Melia, stealing the ball from a hesitant full back and lobbing the onrushing keeper for a magnificent second goal on 23 minutes.

A shocked United got into the game up to half time with the dangerous Tania Marsden firing their best chance just over before Laura Cain coolly controlled and cleared a goal bound header off the line to maintain the 2-0 advantage at the break. United must have received a rocket at half time as they came out determined in the second half but the War Memorial Ladies were ready for the onslaught with Milly Wilson, Katie Denton and skipper Abigail Towns holding a good line to keep them at bay.
