Trial begins over murder of Aseel Al-Essaie AN OUGHTIBRIDGE man is alleged to have admitted ordering the killing of a 23-year-old man in February 2017.
Matthew Cohen, 29, lived in Oughtibridge at the time of his arrest in connection to the murder and is alleged to have told an inmate at HMP Doncaster he told Dale Gordon, 33, to shoot Aseel Al-Essaie. Mr Al-Essaie died after he was shot at point blank range as he sat in his car on Daniel Hill, Sheffield. Mr Cohen, Mr Gordon and Keil Bryan, 32, are on trial at Sheffield Crown Court with all three denying murder. Prosecutor David Brooke QC told the jury that Mr Cohen made the alleged confession in June after his arrest and incarceration. The inmate said Mr Cohen had told him they had been looking
The prosecution allege Mr Gordon shot Mr Al-Essaie with a .44 calibre Smith & Wesson revolver.
The prosecutor said: “The inmate was clear that it was meant as a reference to the murder of Aseel.” Three other men and woman from Sheffield are also on trial.
Mr Bryan is said to have been sat in the back of the car at the time of the shooting.
Mr Good, of Ringstead Crescent, is alleged to have set fire to the VW Golf on the orders of Mr Cohen. Both men deny a charge of perverting the course of justice.
According to the inmate, Mr Cohen then asked James Good, 29, to destroy the VW Golf. It was later found burnt out in Rough Lane, Grenoside, on the same day.
Brothers Razwan, 25, and Mohammed Mirza, 30, of Staniforth Road, are said to have collected Mr Cohen, Mr Gordon and Mr Bryan after the murder. The deny assisting an offender.
The prisoner making the accusations also said he had fought with Mr Gordon at HMP Doncaster and Mr Gordon told him “You know what’s gonna happen now don’t you? You know what I did to my man?” before making a gun gesture with his fingers.
Mr Cohen’s mother, Patricia Sharp, 58, is also on trial accused of lying to police about the ownership of the car allegedly used in the killing. She denies a charge of perverting the course of justice. The trial continues.

Replacement works are due to start in 2018 and will take place across the network in stages over the next three years, mainly between May and September, until 2020. This year the works will be focused on the section between Middlewood and Hillsborough, and in the Gleadless – Birley area.
Based in Doncaster, VolkerRail was selected in February after a tendering process. It has over 70 years of combined experience in heavy and light rail infrastructure sectors and was responsible for the first phase of the Supertram rail replacement scheme, between 2013 and 2015, which was successfully delivered on time.
Stephen Edwards, Executive Director, SYPTE, said: “Supertram is an important part of Sheffield’s public transport network, with 12 million journeys made each year. It is a key asset, providing a sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternative to the car and helping to support economic growth alongside other transport programmes in the city”.
British Steel, which provided the rails in the first phase of the project, has again been appointed as supplier in a separate £1 million contract to replace 11.5km of rail during the second phase.
John Pearson, general manager of VolkerRail’s Metro’s and Rail projects division, said: “We are delighted to continue redeveloping Sheffield’s Supertram network. This network is a key transportation link
Newquay
for commuters and we aim to ensure as little disruption as possible while we replace rails along the routes.” A spokesperson for Stagecoach Supertram which operates the service said: “We understand that some of our customers will be inconvenienced because of this crucial work and we ask for their understanding during this time. This and previous years improvement works will benefit all tram users by ensuring the system is fit for purpose for the long-term and we look forward to attracting even more people on to our greener, smarter services in the future.” SYPTE will also publish up to date information to keep passengers informed about changes and disruptions via Travel South Yorkshire (TSY) website www. travelsouthyorkshire.com/disruptions, on twitter (@TSY

New brewery to open in Loxley A NEW brewery is set to open in Loxley, based just behind the Wisewood Inn on Loxley Road. The same team that run the pub have set up the micro-brewery on the premises and are calling the venture Loxley Brewery. They started their first brew on Tuesday February 27 and are looking forward to tasting their first batch. The beer will use Loxley spring water, drawn from a well on the site. There are plans to sell the spring water separately in the future.
The brewery said: “The journey of our ales will start with the very finest spring water drawn from our own on site well. “Investment put into this well will mean Loxley Spring Water will be on sale in its own right at a later date as well as providing the core ingredient for our beers. Exciting times are just round the corner.” You can follow their progress by searching for Loxley Brewery on Facebook.
Hydrogen vehicles join Streets Ahead’s growing eco-fleet STREETS Ahead is turning to some of the first hydrogenpowered vehicles in the country to help improve its environmental performance on Sheffield roads. Amey, which is steering the city’s 25-year Streets Ahead highways maintenance contract which will see the upgrade of the city roads, pavements, street lighting and bridges on behalf of the council, has two electric vans at its depot at Olive Grove. It is gearing up to run another 15 electric vehicles to replace the current diesel vehicles as part of
its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. And now Amey is taking another major eco-friendly step by trialling two vans that use a hydrogen fuel cell to extend the range of power the battery gives to approximately 200 miles. The Sheffield scheme – the first in Amey’s UK network - is being launched after a Government agency awarded a grant. Results will be monitored by both Amey and the Department for Transport to assess the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles in general.
Hydrogen for the vehicles will be provided by ITM Power from their hydrogen station based at Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield - one of only a handful of hydrogen refueling stations outside of London. The hydrogen uses is produced on site using renewable energy from a wind turbine. It is hoped that hydrogen-powered vehicles could play a part in helping Sheffield to reduce levels of nitrous oxides and particulates as part of the city’s commitment to an Air Quality Management Zone.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON THE ROADS THIS WINTER
AS the nights draw in and the temperature starts to plummet, driving on the roads can become increasingly difficult and hazardous. To stay safe, it’s important to adjust your driving style according to the weather conditions, and carry out the necessary vehicle checks before you venture out.
Jonathan Allbones Director of leading car supermarket, The Car People, has put together his top tips and advice to help you tackle the ‘Beast from the East’ from behind the wheel. Make sure your tyres are suitable for winter conditions. Most UK cars are fitted with either summer or all-season tyres, however these tyres will not perform at their best in extremely cold conditions. Winter tyres are designed to be flexible in extreme cold, providing a better grip on snow and ice. Although not mandatory by law, they’re a great way to help keep you safe in icy conditions, especially in rural areas. Top up your coolant with antifreeze Most modern cars now come with a sealed cooling system that shouldn’t need topping up. The coolant should be a 50/50 split between water and antifreeze, but this can dilute over time. This can result in freezing and potential damage to the en-
gine, so ensure your coolant is at the correct level before making any journeys during winter. It should always be between the ‘MAX’ and ‘MIN’ levels on the side of your expansion tank. Defrosting your windscreen
If you’re a car owner, then you will no doubt dread having to defrost your windows before hitting the road on an early morning. The best and safest way to clear your windscreen is to use a scraper and de-icer. Starting the engine, switching on the heated rear screen and mirrors, and allowing airconditioned air to circulate to gently warm the glass also helps speed up the process. Ensure you don’t leave your car on its own with the keys in the ignition, and double check that your windscreen and all windows are fully defrosted before you drive off. Get set for longer journeys Long journeys are very common during the festive season, as people drive far and wide to spend Christmas with family and friends. It’s important to plan your journey and be prepared for any adverse conditions that might make driving difficult. Check the weather, traffic news and safest routes before you begin your journey, and make sure you have warm clothes and food packed, should you break down.
Mirror Image
Prepare a winter car breakdown kit Winter car breakdown kits are essential to carry in your boot during the colder months. A range of kits are available, with most including a high-vis vest, snow shovel, torch and thermal blankets. Other recommended items also include snow grips for your shoes, non-perishable food and drink supplies, and a phone charger, in case you break down. Check your breakdown cover Fully comprehensive breakdown cover is vital if you’re driving during the winter months, and will give you piece of mind that you won’t be stuck if you do break down. Before you venture out on the roads, double check exactly what you are covered for. Download a weather app Keeping on top of the weather conditions is vital during the winter months. Before you make a car journey, download a weather app to your phone and double check you won’t encounter any wintery conditions during your journey. If you think you might encounter particularly bad weather, it is worth postponing your trip until conditions have improved. Barnsley man charged with burglary A 45-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with two counts of burglary.
Electrical items and gardening tools were stolen from the properties.
Ian Shaw, of Doncaster Road, Barnsley, is charged in connection to burglaries committed last month, one on Saturday January 20 in Thurgoland, and another two days later in Penistone.
Shaw was arrested on Thursday February 22 and remanded into custody. He appeared before Sheffield Magistrates Court this morning and has been bailed with conditions, to appear before Crown Court on Friday March 23.
Does your dog have what it takes to become your canine carer? DO you live with a physical disability and have a pet dog that has the potential to become your canine carer? If so, Sheffield-based national charity Support Dogs would like to hear from you. Support Dogs’ aim is to improve the quality of life and independence of people with a wide range of physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy, MS, fibromyalgia or spinal cord paralysis, by training their own pet dog as a disability assistance dog. And on the week commencing March 12 the charity is holding an initial information day for people who might be interested in applying for an assistance dog to come along and find out more about what it entails, and information about eligibility. Pet dogs need to be between one and three years old to be
eligible to be accepted as a disability assistance dog. Disability assistance dogs are trained to assist and support their owners by carrying out tasks which are specifically tailored to their needs, for example: * Opening and closing doors * Picking up objects * Raising the alarm * Dressing and undressing * Operating control buttons * Loading and unloading the washing machine “Our dogs can make an unbelievable difference to someone’s life,” says support Dogs’ chief executive Rita Howson. “As well as the practical support they offer around the house, they also give people greater confidence and help them lead a more active life and have greater social interaction.
“This increased independence also has a positive impact on our clients’ relationships with friends and family members. It often releases family members from their roles as primary carers and in many cases can enable them and the client to return to paid employment.” The open day is the first step in the application and training process for people with disabilities. Throughout the day there will be group presentations as well as an opportunity to speak to the assistance dog training team one to one. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and the Support Dogs training centre in Brightside is fully accessible. To attend the information day you must book in advance. Please call Support Dogs on 0114 261 7800 or email info@ supportdogs.org.uk

Pupils encouraged to get in on the act
BOLSTERSTONE Community Group’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday March 20 at 7pm in Bolsterstone Village Hall. Following on immediately after the AGM, at around 7.30pm, the Ambulance Service will present a ‘familiarisation course’ based around the village’s new defibrillator. A large number of walkers and cyclists trek or pedal through the beautiful surroundings all year round and so Bolsterstone Community Group recently took up suggestions from members of the Church and Village Hall Trust to install a Yorkshire Ambulance Service defibrillator on the external wall of the Village Hall. The Community Group has purchased the unit from its own funds together with help from The Bridge Shop and Sheffield City Council. The defibrillator, connected to the 999 emergency services, is designed to be used in an absolute emergency and it could save someone’s life. The short ambulance service course on March 20 will enable community group members and local residents from Bolsterstone, Deepcar and Stocksbridge to become familiar with this potential life saving equipment. So, if you are in any walking group or cycling club, or just an interested individual, feel free to attend the open meeting from 7.30pm on March 20 - entry and refreshments are free. Remember, one call and some prompt action may be vital if someone is in distress in or around Bolsterstone.
UNIVERSITY Campus Barnsley (UCB)’s Electric Theatre Company provided a day of drama for Penistone Grammar School pupils. The pupils were entertained by two UCB BA (Hons) Acting for Touring Theatre students who performed an extract from Dumbwaiter by Harold Pinter, directed by a third student. Throughout the day the pupils also received acting workshops from Tell Tale Hearts Children’s Touring Theatre Co., Cast Theatre, Leeds Loves Devising and Drama Skills Matter. The day ended with a question and answer
session with the pupils, discussing how drama can benefit them and why it is a valuable skill to have. Zeena Rasheed, Drama teacher at Penistone Grammar School, said: “I think the Year 9 and 11 pupils and staff who watched really enjoyed the experience. The pupils absolutely valued the stories of real lives, work and study that hopefully made them think differently and more accurately about studying Drama GCSE as a valid and valuable, enjoyable and demanding option.”
Peter Lawton, HE Pathway Leader at UCB, added: “Many schools are dropping drama as an option, so it was great to be at a school that views it in a very positive way and recognises the huge amount of transferable skills that can be acquired by studying and taking part in drama.” To find out more about the BA (Hons) Acting for Touring Theatre degree at UCB, visit universitycampus.barnsley. ac.uk, call 01226 216 165 or email info@ barnsley.ac.uk

Dear Councillor Ogle,
As ever it’s up to you.
We were, however, doubtful you would work crossparty given that you have previously run in four different elections as a UKIP candidate, but we hoped we would be proved wrong.
Publication subject to space and content. Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.
But now it has come to my attention that you have confirmed — in writing — to Sheffield City Council’s Monitoring Officer that you still remain a member a UKIP and that they hold direct influence over your decisions, admitting that UKIP are a body “whose principal purposes include the influence of public opinion or influence” and that have influence over your decision-making.
The decisions made by Councillors are then turned into letters, emails and cheques (plus recorded David Ogle, minutes of each meeting) by the dedicated staff. I await with interest your response. Stocksbridge Best Walking Many thanks so I made a freedom of information request.
Asking a question
The council has over many months made lots of statements about the wishes of the users raised in the survey. The public and councillors have been led to believe the survey results stated users wanted to basically see the building ripped apart and rebuilt. However the truth is the building users only asked for more storage, mugs instead of cups and a more accessible toilet etc. No more than £3000 work. However slipped amongst the pages was a survey sheet with the user name ‘staff ’ on it. It said the ‘user’ wished the building be rewired, new radiators and major building work etc. The information provided publicly at meetings was that the users of the space had condemned the building when, in fact, that wasn’t the truth at all. That was the opinion of the employed staff written on a survey sheet! The Clerk (or his staff) could have written to the council and presented his opinions at meetings. He didn’t he chose to hide it as part of a survey vastly skewing the results. So I asked why did the staff hide their opinion in a survey? Cllr Zoe Sykes (in the Chair) spoke with vitriol, raising her voice and waving her hands at me. She even accused me of offending her! Let’s not forget asking a question backed up with documentation can only offend if you don’t like the truth. This is certainly not the behaviour expected of a parish councillor let alone a city one. In the interest of fairness may I add the video doesn’t lie and is publicly available for anyone to make up their own mind if this is the behaviour expected of an elected official. I have yet to have contact from Sykes or the clerk so will wait a little longer for an apology.

This approach particularly irked considering you live in the Thorncliffe ward of the Parish rather than High Green. Regardless, I and my Labour colleagues congratulated you on your success and hoped that you would work constructively with all Parish councillors for the good of the area.

Come clean In November, when you stood in the Parish council election for High Green, you maintained you were an “independent” candidate and made much fanfare about how you would be “putting High Green first” and that you were the only real local candidate who would be devoid of any political or party allegiances.
Got something to say?

Neighbourhood
Councillor Zoe Sykes, Sheffield City Councillor for West Ecclesfield, Dear Editor, Ecclesfield Parish Councillor Thank you very much for publicising the Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome bid to become Council value the ‘’’Best Walking Neighbourhood’ in the U.K. As the only nominee for Yorkshire we are in with a chance but need as many people as possible to Sir / Madam, vote for us. I’m appalled at some of the letters on these pages It is very easy, just go to www.ramblers/org.uk/ recently attacking local councillors. As Cllr Ogle vote. Isn’t it time we thanked them for the time they Best wishes, Gill Wolff dedicate to their roles? Personally, I’m grateful that we’ve got dedicated people like Cllr Ogle and his colleagues standing up for our area. Where would our area be without such skilled, passionate councillors capable of doing so many good things? I’m pleased to see their commitment to putting up council tax so they’re able to continue there work. I’d like to see a referendum as I’m sure we’ll see a victory for those of us who want to see our taxes go up to ensure the future of our parish council. I hope those criticising them take a moment to think about their words and apologise. Yours, Mrs Miff
Ecclesfield parish council reform or go
Council sunk to a new low this month refusing to Terry Bawden add my discussion points to agenda for monthly meeting. Blatant attempt to silence High Green’s voice at the table. It will not work, all they are doing is proving my point that this council needs to be reformed, so that it works equally for all within its boundaries. Videos of what’s happening on my Facebook page,
More thoughts about Parish and Town Councils
In densely populated towns and cities, the Town Hall was much more closely in contact with residents’ issues. In the old West Riding and elsewhere, there were also Rural and Urban District Councils, and then for a much wider area, the County Council (WRCC). All three levels of local government had their own distinct responsibilities as there is no point in duplicating roles (e.g. Policing,Public Health, Housing etc), otherwise you are paying twice for the same thing. The only way to influence matters is to get involved. Firstly make an effort to find out what each candidate stands for and their character, then vote for your choice based on your judgement. We all need to be aware, however, how slowly politics works in general but how quickly it can react in an emergency (e.g. flooding in recent years). That is what I have learned during my years in local politics. It is hard at first for new councillors at Parish or City level to completely understand the possibilities and restrictions of their role but eventually, if they listen and learn, they should be able to contribute usefully to their community. Victoria Bowden, (former Parish Councillor for Ecclesfield Village)
Parish Council funds Whilst having some sympathy for the concerns of Anthony Toon, the continuous letters from Cllr Ogle about Parish Council funding masks the other good work that is carried out, such as scrutinising planning applications in the parish area taking into account the views of local residents.
The reality on funding is that there is an annual grants budget of £30,000 which can be accessed by any local community or charitable group for small projects. In 2015/16 less than £8,000 was issued to 13 different organisations in local grant funding. Dear Sir Surely it is the responsibility of Parish Councillors to ensure bona-fide local groups are aware of the availability of funding, and to help them complete In recent weeks there has been such a lot of the simple application form so it can be considered misinformation about Ecclesfield Parish Council and approved by Ecclesfield Parish Council’s (and by extension other Parish and Town Finance Committee? Councils) that I feel I must shed light on various issues. Opinions based on few or no facts are Ecclesfield Parish Council is a publicly funded worthless. Based on correct information they can body, and publicly accountable for the spending of the precept they receive through the council tax. If be respected. Cllr Ogle believes High Green has not had a fair I had assumed that it was widely known that Parish share of funds, he should be talking to community Councillors are not paid and receive no expenses groups in High Green, explaining what projects or for their time. I was obviously wrong to assume initiatives qualify for funding, and helping them this. In fact what with election costs plus travel and submit applications. The money is there. It’s not phone costs, it is a financial commitment to attend being spent. meetings (two or three per month) which I did for 28 years. Mike Levery, Many people have said to individual Parish Grenoside Councillors over the years, “You must be mad to do it for nowt!” The rewards, however, are in knowing that the Parish Council gives a good service to residents. Its main functions are in assessing planning applications, with the help of

Mother’s Day Feature
Mother’s Day through the ages and gift ideas A RELATIONSHIP which is always with us is the one we share with our mother. They are there to guide us, support us, love us and help form who we are. They have a big hand in shaping our lives and our personalities and it is for this reason that many say that their mother is their best friend. We might have our own individualistic approach in paying tribute to these amazing people in our lives, our mothers. Of course, many mothers will love a nice bunch of flowers or a special meal out somewhere and our feature will help with that! As ever, we encourage our readers to keep it local when shopping for gifts! Here are some other ideas. One really different yet conventional Mother’s Day gift idea would be trendy tableware and one or many cookbooks to go with them. It is important to choose the present as per her style of cooking and serving.
If going in for something unique or different in terms of designs and patterns of the tableware or dinner set, then the same should blend in with the pattern of the tableware collection of your mum. The cookbook will serve to complete the Mother’s Day gifts set. The times have brought in many changes to the gifting trends as well. Thus, even in case of the occasion of Mother’s Day gifts that last longer and can be treasured as collectibles for a long, long time will find a better place in our mothers hearts.
Home gardens are a trend that are fast catching up with people integrating the inside and the outside of their homes. Your mother is going to love this innovative, unique yet useful gift idea. Indoor plants, small herbs in pots, flowering shrubs that grow in shade placed artistically on customisable stands would not only add to the beauty of your home but would also bring in a freshness to your home surroundings. Turn to our gardening feature for inspiration!
A thoughtfully compiled list of music or movies and better still both is a sure shot way of making this Mother’s Day memorable for the both of you. This is also one gift that the whole family can enjoy and bond over on family time.
In keeping with the flow of your house settings, you can choose a number of home decorative pieces as Mother’s Day presents for your mother. If feeling unsure of finding the right kind of decorations, it is not a bad idea to keep your mother in the shopping.
With the ever decreasing home space, the need for welcoming greens inside our homes is more prominent than ever.
No matter what you do, make you, and more importantly your mother, have a great Mother’s Day!

PENISTONE Church took a point after a hard-fought battle in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division after drawing 1-1 with Bottesford Town on Saturday. Dayle Hutson opened the scoring for Bottesford after just nine minutes but 10 minutes later, Church were back on terms with seasoned striker Andy Ring notching. After the game, manager Ian Richards said: “I think a point is a fair result today, both teams had sections of the game when they were the better team and looked like they were going to score. “I thought they had the first 15 or 20 minutes and we had the second part of the first half when we threatened and got back in the game to go in oneone at half time.
I thought we started the second half the better team, we had a couple of chances cleared off the line and saved from set pieces and they had a really good 15 minute spell where Chris Snaith made three excellent saves to keep us in the game and towards the end it was nip and tuck where we had that chance at the end when Tom Brennan’s shot was blocked on the line. “The pitch surface had dried out to make it very bobbly and hard to get any patterns of play going or interchange of passing in their half so we had to change and be methodical and play percentage football. “Then we had to get the ball forward a little bit quicker and try and get into wide areas and threaten from there. The only one disappointment for me is when we did get in those wide areas we didn’t put enough
quality into the box, into good areas where Andy Ring could get onto the end of things. “Defensively we did well, solid, we were back to where we were prior to the Barton game, they overloaded us just a little bit for the goal but we rectified this. Just before half time, we made a couple of changes in positions which allowed us to stop their eleven breaking and ten getting a bit of space. “I’m quite happy with a point overall we take that into the Pickering game on Wednesday and we start another unbeaten run. “All good sides lose games but the best sides don’t lose two in a row, I think we are one of the better sides in this league and we show that by not losing two in a row.”
Gadget Show makes Cycle Penistone visit
IT’S been an eventful week at Cycle Penistone. First they had a visit from Channel 5’s The Gadget Show filming for their latest series. Details on what exactly was happening are few and far between at the moment but make sure you tune in to the new series starting March 9 to see their big screen debut. Along with Barnsley Council, Cycle Penistone have also been shortlisted for an award at the LGC (Local Government Chronicle) Awards in London next month in recognition of their contribution to recycling. They have also been shortlisted in the Improvement & Efficiency Awards 2018 (iESE) awards too. They are in the top three which means they are ensured to get either gold, silver or bronze in the Transformation in Environmental Services category.

Park scheme nets national award
BOMBER JOINS FAREWELL
NATIONAL tennis charity Tennis For Free (TFF) has announced its 2017 awards and one Sheffield tennis group has netted an honour, recognising it as one of the best in the country. Hillsborough Park has won the title of ‘Tennis For Free Best New UK Site Of The Year 2017’. Announcing the awards, the judges’ citation read: Hillsborough Park is a fantastic collaboration of partners all forming to create a fantastic TFF environment. Sheffield City Council, the LTA and Parks Tennis CIC have all gone the extra mile to create a vibrant TFF session that has seen 467 attendances on TFF sessions since it launched in late Summer. In addition, one member was also nominated as Tennis For Free ‘Player of the Year’. Alan Williams reached the final three, narrowly missing out on the top honour.
CHRIS ‘Bomber’ Harris, one of the modern day British legends, has joined the line-up for Simon Stead’s farewell meeting at Owlerton on March 25.
way and I’m sure he’s got some good years left in him, he’s still a tough competitor and he’ll score lots of points for Glasgow in the Championship.”
Former Coventry hero Harris is lined up for Glasgow this year as well as top flight Rye House and is always a popular attraction at any meeting.
As for French racer Bellego, Stead says he’s keen to see some Swindon fans on the Owlerton terraces.
And he’ll be joined in the showpiece event by Swindon’s French ace David Bellego with Stead keen to have links with another of his old clubs. Said Stead “Bomber been a loyal servant to British Speed-
“David is a class act, he turned out to be one of the main reasons behind them winning the league last season because he went on an amazing run of form,” he said. “I’m delighted to have him in my meeting.”
The duo join World Champion Jason Doyle, Grand Prix ace Martin Vaculik, Swedish World Cup man Jacob Thorssell, Danish icon Hans Andersen and Tigers stars Josh Bates and Kyle Howarth. Stead has also revealed BT Sport’s Nigel Pearson, who spent a decade at Owlerton as centre green presenter, will roll back the years by making a return to the microphone for the day. Tickets are available in advance from the club’s official website.
Receiving the award, Lead Coach at Hillsborough Park, Ryan Bagshaw, said: “It’s an honour to receive this award on behalf of everyone. We have a wonderful tennis community, full of amazingly friendly, funny and passionate people who attend Tennis For Free every week, whatever the weather. Our journey to create this scheme in the last few years has been incredible and I’m very proud to be part of it.” Tennis For Free is a UK charity which aims to create healthy, vibrant local tennis communities for free on public park courts creating new players of all ages and backgrounds. It is partnered with the LTA and joins the local authority to create two hours of free tennis every week at normally under-used tennis courts targeting hundreds of lo-
cal people to enjoy a new sport to improve their fitness but also create new social and friendship groups. Tennis For Free supporters include Judy Murray (mother of World No1 Andy), BBC tennis commentator Andrew Castle and ex Grand Slam winner Pat Cash. Paul Jessop, Tennis For Free CEO said: “The judges found this year’s awards particularly difficult to mark because of all the amazing stories. Hillsborough is a new site for 2017 and because of its high weekly attendance and community spirit it shone so brightly. It was a close call and we celebrate everyone’s achievements. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved at TFF. Coaches, volunteers, supporters and of course the players. “Looking ahead to 2018 we are aiming to open our 100th site this year and also reach another milestone – registering our 100,000th player. That means that we have introduced 100,000 people to the sport of tennis which is something that we are very proud of.” John Willis, Tennis For Free Regional Development Officer said: “My congratulations to everyone at Hillsborough Park. It’s a super site with energetic and friendly coaches and a real community feel – exactly what Tennis For Free is all about.” Hillsborough Park was close to a double celebration after regular Alan Williams just missed out on another TFF award. Alan was nominated as ‘Best Player Of The Year’ for being instrumental in setting up the TFF scheme at Hillsborough Park. Aside from being a key member of the newly established tennis community
at the site, he has gone over and above his employed Sheffield council position as Green Space Project Officer to get the scheme embedded and running successfully week on week. Tennis For Free has plans to bring more than 175,000 new tennis players, 2,000 coaches and 5,000 volunteers into the sport over the next five years. The charity, which runs free community tennis sessions at public parks across the UK, has a new partnership agreement with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and a new funding circle of private individuals. The new partnership will boost the network of free tennis schemes by hundreds nationwide, launching in Wales and Northern Ireland as well as increasing its sites in England and Scotland, making it a truly national community led programme. Tennis For Free, which works with local authorities and tennis clubs up and down the country, currently funds around 200 professional tennis coaches who are supported by volunteers to offer weekly sessions to people of all ages and backgrounds at its 50 sites. Everything is free for participants - equipment is provided and there are no court hire costs. It will also bring more people, especially from disadvantaged communities, into physical activity and reinvigorate underused local parks. Tennis For Free runs at Hillsborough Park every Saturday between 10am-12noon. You can register for Tennis For Free as follows: www.tennissheffield. com/tff For more information visit www.tennisforfree.com. Stocksbridge PS 2-3 Corby Town
Crampton & Moore
STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels lost out to Corby Town in a game which was important for both teams’ play-off hopes. It didn’t start well for Stocksbridge - on 20 minutes goalkeeper David Reay was sent off for kicking out at Phil Trainer.

With no substitute keeper on the bench, Liam McFayden had to don the gloves and his first task was facing a penalty. Corby took the lead from the resulting penalty, Matthew Gardner giving McFadyen no chance. Steels battled well until half time but on 61 minutes Dino Tusker doubled the visitors’ lead, deflecting in a cross past McFadyen. LG OLED55B7V

OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies’18-match unbeaten run came to end in a League Cup quarter final at the hands of league leaders Leicester with the prolific Gabriella Reid doing the damage with a second half hat-trick. But this was still a battling performance by an under-strength War Memorial Ladies who were hampered even more by a late switch to a poor 3G surface, which obviously suited the hosts. Against the run of play, Oughtibridge got their noses in front through Kathryn Mudge and Becky Shaw but were pegged back on the stroke of half time and that goal proved a crucial
lifeline as within five minutes of the restart it was 2-2. The game was end to end now and Oughtibridge paid for a couple of missed chances as Reid put the hosts ahead on 70 minutes and despite throwing caution to the wind the WM Ladies couldn’t find a leveller and were hit on the break in the dying seconds as Reid completed her hat-trick to put them through. This result brought home how valuable the six points are that they have taken off Leicester this season in the league so there is still all to play for in the remaining 10 league games starting at home to Rise Park Ladies on Sunday March 4 with a 2pm kick off.
