SNOW CHAOS
mother’s day feature - page 12
child care and education feature - page 14
THE ‘Beast from the East’ descended on England last week and north Sheffield was no exception with snow days for schools and businesses alike. Although the closures brought about fun and a welcome day off for many, for others it was a difficult time. Homes in Penistone were left without running water and plumbers were pulled out with work as boilers failed in the below freezing temperatures. For the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team, it was a busy time with them being called out to a string of emergencies. This photo of them attending an overturned car made the national press – although when the team arrived they found it abandoned.

Action team in Burncross get a helping hand BURNCROSS Action Team are one of Sheffield’s good causes that received a helping hand from council contractors. From painting a community hall and raising funds for the elderly to helping a food bank collection and clearing a river– Sheffield employees working for council contractor, Amey, are making their mark in more ways than one, in communities across the city. Throughout the UK, Amey encourages its staff to use one paid day per year to support a community initiative of their choice – one that generates environmental, educational or employment benefits. Random Act of Kindness Day is a national initiative taking place throughout February, but in Sheffield, over the past year, Amey employees have rolled up their sleeves to engage in a number of projects. Burncross Action Team received help in clearing debris and plant greenery. Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Bryan Lodge said: “It’s fantastic to see Amey employees dedicating their time to supporting local communities.

“There’s lots of charitable work going on in Sheffield and we’re proud that our contractors are taking an active role in various projects, using the skills and expertise that they require for their day jobs. “A little can go a long way and, in some cases, projects that previously didn’t have the resource, have now been completed to a high standard, thanks to Amey’s dedication. Tom Venn, Amey HR Business Partner, said: “We encourage our employees to participate in charity and community projects and provide each with one paid day per year to support an initiative of their choice. “It is part of our ultimate aim of creating sustainable communities and working with our customers, partners and suppliers to maximise long-term benefits for the wider community. “In Sheffield, the sterling efforts of our employees are making a difference for a range of community organisations. Brenda Hind, Chair of Burncross Action Team, also thanked the Amey team for arranging a community work day, saying: “It’s been just brilliant and made our most difficult task a breeze.

Organisers are hoping to create a surging sea of green along the Sheffield Tinsley canal towpath to help raise money for breast, ovarian and prostate cancer charities along with a charity that provide support for children with facial deformities. Fancy dress is optional but strongly encouraged there’s a Shamrock morph-man with a selfie competition giving away
free race places, along with the rest of the race team in St Patrick’s fancy dress. It’s a totally inclusive event family friendly, wheelchair friendly, pram friendly route, with all sorts of St Patrick’s Day paraphernalia available at the start line to make sure that everybody is all dressed up and in the mood. At the start line there are tea, coffee, hot chocolate and merchandise; at the finish line there are exclusive medals, as much cake as any runner can morally justify eating along with goody bags including beer, wristbands, key rings and all sorts of other stuff.
Thorncliffe Leisure Centre provide bottles of water and free five-day gym passes for every runner, so it’s a fantastic family day out that does a whole lot of good, too. RunForit is a brand-new Sheffield start-up that promotes inclusive sports for everyone regardless of age, ability or disability by organising family events, the proceeds of which go to support local and national charities. Staring just before Christmas 2017 the Wilkinson family created the scheme because of their teenage daughter’s desire to give rather than get at Christmas. People can enter the races at www.runforit.today/stpaddy

LIFE COACH UP FOR AWARD
AN OUGHTIBRIDGE life coach has been nominated for a prestigious award, just months after winning one. Debbie Cundy, 50, has been on an incredible journey in her life, losing 12 stone and raising over £25,000 for charities along the way. After her charitable contributions saw her scoop the Coaching Academy’s 2017 Coaching for a Cause Award, Debbie is now in the running for the Yorkshire Choice Awards’ Inspirational Individual award. After losing the weight, Debbie has kept the weight off for 10 years and has totally transformed her life. She now takes pleasure in working with others in helping them to do the same with her Clarity in Mind life coaching.
WERE you a pupil at Burncross Infant School in 1959? If you were, there’s a chance you are in this photograph.
day and I’ll be seeing them on Thursday. I think we were about seven when the photo was taken.
Rosemary Bell (nee Jezusek) is in the photo and is trying to track down the others for a reunion.
“The school was knocked down in the 90s and a housing estate was built on it. It’s a shame - it was a lovely school. There’s no date set for the reunion yet, we’ll just do it when we have as many of us as possible.”
She has already managed to find the whereabouts of some of the people in the photo, two are deceased, and two emigrated to Africa. Rosemary told Look Local: “It’s been harder to find the boys! I had been thinking about a reunion for a while. “My husband and daughter are both ill and I care for them and I decided I needed a little project for myself. “I had been reminiscing about my childhood and decided to try and track everyone down. I’m not giving up! I have regular contact with two of the girls, we met regularly for coffee. It’s my birthday on Wednes-
She has completed a number of long-distance cycle rides, including a 252-mile effort from London, over three days, finishing at the Eiffel tower. This has enabled her to help Weston Park Hospital and the Endeavour Charity who build new futures for young people at risk of being excluded from education or who don’t have a mainstream education place. Debbie told Look Local: “It’s a privilege to be part of one big family at Endeavour and Weston Park. The people I meet inspire me and makes me do what I do.
The people Rosemary is looking for are Robert Hutchinson, Rory Gregory, Stephen Kay, Denise Cooke, Brenda Shaw, Helen Stewart, May Maw, Richard Goddard, Margaret Burgin, Graham Taylor, Jacqueline Parkin, Robert Greaves, Derek Kier, Stephen French, Eric Dexter, Jean Gregory and Stephen Armitage.
“These awards are something quite special and it’s an honour to even be considered.” Debbie has no intention of stopping anytime soon either, in July she’ll be back on her bike for charity, cycling Inverness to Glasgow and covering 267 miles in three days.
Please contact Rosemary on 07837078554 or Look Local at news@looklocal.org.uk or on 0114 2831100 if you are one of these people or you know of their whereabouts.

Evita! A musical legend is back in a major new production THE woman, the legend, the drama, the passion…musical phenomenon Evita is back in an exciting new production from Endellion Theatre! For the millions who adored her she was a stylish saviour and a beacon of hope, a glittering Cinderella figure in a post war shattered world. For the people who opposed her, Eva Peron was a dangerous and manipulative enemy, the small time actress who slept her way to power, driven by a burning resentment of anybody who stood in her way on her route to the top. Now from Endellion Theatre Company comes an entirely new production of the multi-award winning Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice stage and movie hit musical about the girl from the back streets who used everything she had to become an Argentinian political legend.
Directed by the acclaimed Jonathan Walker-Kane, this fresh take on a musical classic will run at The Theatre Impromptu, the specially adapted Thurlstone Parish Church, from April 7 to 14. A cast of some of the region’s best known non-professional actors and singers is led by Fiona Walker as Eva, Matthew Walker as Che Guevara, Mark Holmes as Peron, Bob Flewitt as nightclub singer Magaldi and Gina Townend as the mistress. The production will also feature a company of 30 adults and three teams of children, along with a full orchestra. Jonathan Walker-Kane’s previous directing credits include Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar at Sheffield’s Lyceum, A Man For All Seasons at Sheffield Cathedral, Aspects of Love at West Yorkshire Playhouse and The Boyfriend, South Pacific, Follies, A Little Night Music, Shirley Valentine, The King
and I and Talking Heads at Buxton Opera House. He most recently directed an acclaimed revival of musical classic Oliver at the Church of St Giles in the Field in London’s West End as well as productions of Taken at Midnight at Penistone Parish Church and Man of La Mancha at the famous Leeds City Varieties. “The unique demands of a venue like Thurlstone Parish Church, which is being specially adapted to accommodate a shows of this size and scale, mean this will be an entirely fresh take on one of the most successful musicals ever written,” he said. “With a show of this scale and ambition we have once again cast some of the best known and most familiar names across the region as we need to have the best company possible.” Book online - with no booking fee - at endellion.tessera.info/tickets/ evita
MP lends support to Chapeltown charity A Chapeltown-based charity has gained the support of its local MP to help drive change for people living with a rare disease of the heart and lungs. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK) welcomed Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, to its office on Friday February 23. The aim of the visit was to discuss the work of the charity and to raise awareness of the rare disease pulmonary hypertension (PH) - a life-limiting illness that causes high blood pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and
lungs. The disease affects just 7,000 out of 64 million people in the UK.
highlighted the nine specialist PH centres across the UK.
Angela Smith MP said: “I could see straight away during my visit that the PHA UK puts patients and their families at its heart. I was particularly moved by a short film of a patient who shared her experience of living with the disease.
Angela continued: “It’s really positive to hear that the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield is a centre of excellence in PH treatment - providing the very best care to patients not just in our city, but as far as Manchester and Cumbria.
“I was also able to meet her during the session and talk at length about the issues she faces on a daily basis.”
“As a rare disease charity, I believe it’s important for PHA UK to work with others in the rare disease sector and to be a beacon of hope for patients. The charity has already made great strides in its campaign to drive public policy change and I’m very pleased to be able to provide support to the charity in any way I can.”
During the meeting, Professor David Kiely, respiratory physician at the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital,
Beloved Cub Scout leader of 50 years passes away A LOCAL woman who dedicated over 50 years of her life to the Scout movement passed away on Friday February 23. Christine Tazzyman, who was 70, was a Cub Scout leader for 47 years, although she had previously been involved even before then. Her dedication to the cause didn’t waiver in later life, and she only retired from Scouting at the age of 68. She was the Cub Scout leader at 1st Stocksbridge 32nd Sheffield, although she took over the running of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for a short period, such was her fondness of the organisation and the young people who attended. Her son, Ashley, told Look Local: “She very much believed in Scouting and wanted more than anything to give young people a good experience. She thought that Scouts provided a good upbringing. It kept her young at heart being around young people so much.” Christine leaves behind husband Keith, who was also a Cub Scout leader. Her three children - Ashley, Amanda and Tracey are all involved with Scouting too. Christine’s funeral is at Grenoside Crematorium on March 22 at 1.15pm. The family have requested donations to the Stocksbridge Scout Group instead of flowers.
In 2017, the PHA UK launched the advocacy programme PHocus2021 to campaign for public policy changes that will improve quality of life for people living with PH. PHocus2021, is aiming to reduce the time to diagnosis, ensure access to treatments and reduce financial hardship incurred by living with the disease. Iain Armstrong, chair of PHA UK, said: “We know that everyday life can be very challenging for people with pulmonary hypertension but not many people are aware of the disease. We hope that by engaging in discussion with our local MP, and lobbying in Westminster through our PHocus2021 programme,
we can help to dramatically improve the circumstances for people living with PH. Our aim is to make significant progress by the year 2021.” Symptoms of PH typically involve breathlessness, fatigue, black-outs and swelling around the ankles, arms and stomach. PH affects the ability to carry out basic tasks and get around. Adult patients with PH are treated at seven specialist centres across the UK including at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Children with the disease are treated at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London.

Host a Pawsome Tea party and raise funds for cats CATS Protection is inviting the cat-loving public to host their very own Pawsome Tea parties in April to help cats in their local area. The event, launched last year, was met with an enthusiastic response and the charity is hoping even more cat-lovers will sign up now to raise money for the thousands of unwanted cats and kittens in Cats Protection’s care. Abi Young, the charity’s Mass Participation Officer, said: “It’s a wonderful excuse to enjoy some quality time with loved ones to enjoy tea, cake and a chat while raising funds for unwanted cats.

Families given secondary school places of their choice in 97% of cases A HUGE 97 per cent of children in Sheffield have been given a place at a secondary school of their choice, new figures released on Thursday March 1 show. Of the 6,187 students set to start secondary school in September, 97 per cent have been given a place at one of their three choices of school, while 89 per cent have been given their first choice of
school. Sheffield is once again performing above the national average. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: ”I hope today’s results are a big relief to the thousands of families across Sheffield who have been waiting to find out if their child has been accepted
into their school of choice. “We are providing more local school places to help us meet the needs of our growing population. “The opening of the two new secondary schools Mercia and Astrea in the south west and north east of the city, as well additional year seven places at Don Valley, mean that this year, we have been able to
provide an extra 400 year seven places to meet the demands across the city. “We all want the best for our children and a huge priority for us is to keep on raising attainment and achievement rates across the city. Getting children into their school of choice and providing outstanding local schools are key to this.”
The small number of children who were not allocated a place at any of their three preferences have either been referred back to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest school with places available. Information and advice is available to those did not get their preferred school. More information is available at www.

Would you like to make a family notice?
Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
Prices start from just £26
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans
Contact us on enquiries@looklocal. org.uk or call in at 516 Manchester Road Stocksbridge S36 2DU
Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Reply to Councillor Sykes letter 1st of March 2018
Voting for Stocksbridge
I live in High Green, as you well know, at 13 Greenwood Road, High Green, S35 3GU. I was born on Potters Hill and have lived on Booth Road and Worrall Road. My parents, grand parents, great grand parents were all from High Green and are buried in St Mary’s graveyard on Pack Horse Lane as I will be at some future point.
Dear Editor, In response to Gill’s letter in last week’s Look Local, I am writing to support Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome in their bid to win for Stocksbridge the title of “Best Walking Neighbourhood”. I don’t expect many people have been out on local footpaths over the past week, the paths have probably mainly disappeared under the snow and ice, but we really are so lucky to have so many wonderful accessible walks in our locality - many with brilliant views from both sides of the valley. For any new to local walking, look at www.stocksbridge-walkers.org.uk.
I voted Labour all my life until I realised the insanity of the national Labour Party and I voted Labour locally until I met the local Labour Councillors. After meeting them I decided to stand as an Independent three times and then joined UKIP and stood under the UKIP sponsorship after meeting Councillor John Booker at the election The Stocksbridge of the future will inevitably count - a man I respect deeply. become increasingly urbanised, so we must ensure I covered all this during the election for the seat I that we maintain and even increase our network of now hold, Parish Councillor for High Green Ward, local footpaths. Winning national recognition from which was an opportunity you created with your The Ramblers Association would be fantastic. In venom, driving former Labour Parish Councillor order to win Stocksbridge needs to come top out of Eldon Hanson to quit the council and the Labour the ten finalists, the list includes places as far apart Party because of the stance he took in opposing as Dumfries in Scotland and Hastings on the South your attempt to close the Angram Bank Children’s Coast! Centre. Every vote matters – so please go to www.ramblers. I also covered this in my letter of the 4th January org.uk/vote. Your town needs you! (page 13) of this local paper. I am still a member of UKIP and will be until the end of this month at which point my membership expires. I will not be renewing and I will be standing as an Independent for the West Ecclesfield Ward in the City Council elections in May.
Mary Condon
Gritter thanks
I doubt this time it will come down to our names being pulled out of an envelope again to decide who I would just like to thank the young man who We at Look Local would like to thank all our represents High Green, Burncross and Grenoside has driven his Land Rover up and down St Mary Crescent, stopping, taking a bucket of grit and deliverers that tackled the adverse weather as it was in 2016, due to equal votes. spreading it over the road during this snowy, icy conditions to ensure that copies of the newspaper As for influence over what I say and do – nobody but weather – at all hours. St Mary resident. The management. As for the way I’ve voted since being elected by my fellow High Greeners, the truth is out there. I’ve voted for equality of grants’ funding, for the return Community Day postponed of over £26,500 taken from High Green, not to raise taxes, not to spend even more money on any Stocksbridge Community Forum apologises for Council offices, to create a cross party committee on CELEBRATE in postponing Community Day. I’ve also fought for zebra crossings, a safety barrier Stocksbridge Community Forum for Greengate Lane school, our boxing gym, youth club, renovation of our parks, CCTV, a defibrillator for Angram Bank and, just as important, stopping Last chance to vote you from giving the Miners Welfare Hall away. I’ve removed graffiti off the streets and parks for years at no cost to the tax payer but as always facing Look Local printed an article a couple of weeks complete, consistent, aggressive opposition from ago about Stocksbridge reaching the final of The you. You, the Stocksbridge is the only Yorkshire nomination perfect example of why Labour disgusts so many to make the 2018 shortlist. Organised by The voters. You stand on the shoulders of giants from Ramblers, this prestigious award recognises an area a previous Labour Party long gone now, relying on where walking is safe, pleasant and an easy way to the blind loyalty of good people who you then stab in the back at every opportunity, knowing you can travel. use the money they donate to tell them you are In order for Stocksbridge to win this competition helping them. we need people to vote for us and it is easy to do. PENISTONE FOOTPATH RUNNERS BRAVE ARCTIC CONDITIONS FOR CLECKHEATON CHAMPIONSHIPS THE arctic weather took a toll on local sport with most football and rugby fixtures being postponed. Running was also affected but one fixture which survived the weather was the Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Champion-
ships, held at Cleckheaton, in snowy and muddy conditions. Penistone Footpath Runners provided 12 of the 51 runners in the men’s race. Shaun Dimelow was the first PFR runner back in 11th place closely fol-
lowed by Jon Waller in 15th. The V40 team won bronze in the shape of Dimelow, Martin Ball and Phil Hinchliffe, with the V35 team finishing fourth. The club won the All-to-Count V40 shield.
