A-Level joy in north Sheffield STUDENTS across the city have been receiving their A-Level results this week. A-Level grades showed that the city maintains its performance from 2016. 95 percent of students, reported so far, got at least one A-Level grade A*-E. Just under a fifth of students achieved grades AAB or higher, across three subjects. Barnsley Sixth Form College is celebrating another excellent set of A Level results with a 99% overall pass rate and a 100% pass rate in 21 subjects, including English, History, Chemistry, Geography, French and Sociology. Nine out of 10 students achieved three or more A Level passes with a continuing increase in high grades. Barnsley Sixth Form College Principal Liz Leek said: “We are thrilled to be announcing such excellent results and would like to congratulate our students on their achievements. This is the first year we have seen the full impact of the government’s A Level reform and I am very proud to see how well our students and staff have responded to these changes. “Many of our students are now progressing on to university, whilst others go on to apprenticeships or employment. They have bright futures ahead and we are certain that they will take with them the confidence and knowledge they have gained during their time at Barnsley Sixth Form College.”

Chapeltown Academy announced an excellent set of results, achieving a spectacular A*-E pass rate of 100%, which is above the national average of 97.9%. Interim head, Ali Jaffer, said: “We are so thrilled with the achievements of all our second graduating cohort. “Not only have they achieved superb results academically, but they have shown that they are a group of thoughtful, engaged, and dedicated young people. “Each of them have the academic, social and cultural foundations to contribute meaningfully and positively to society and go on and be leaders in their fields in the future - it has been a privilege working with every one of them.” Students, aged 16 to 18, who sat A Levels at Sheffield College achieved an 83% pass rate this year. This year, 17% of students, aged 16 to 18, achieved grades A* to B. There were 313 A Level exam entries in total for the 16 to 18-year-old age group. Paul Corcoran, Chief Executive, The Sheffield College, said: “I want to congratulate our students and wish them every success for the next stage of their lives.” He added: “The College attracts a diverse student community. We transform lives through learning by placing a strong emphasis on how far students progress during their time with us as well as exam results.”

Apprentices start at Liberty House
LIBERTY Speciality Steels has agreed a contract with Sheffield College to train 50 new apprentices, with some operating in Stocksbridge.
The company and the college have reached an agreement to turn their in-house apprentice training facilities at Stocksbridge steelworks into an industry-based campus for the college. It’s been just three months since Liberty took over from Tata Steel UK and they are looking to create 300 new jobs and this apprenticeship scheme is part of that. The apprentices are aged between
16 to 35 with new starters aged between 16 and 20. Training delivery manager at Liberty Speciality Steel, Tony Goddard, said: “Since the last recession there has been a gradual grow
back within the engineering and manufacturing industries which has created a demand for highly skilled people. “To ensure that our business can continue to grow we have com-
mitted to apprenticeship programmes which we believe can deliver individuals with the right skills and knowledge at the right times to ensure that the company can move forward.”
The Sheffield College business development director Andrew Hartley said: “We are delighted to launch this new partnership with Liberty Speciality Steels at such an exciting time for the company.
“Apprenticeships offer employers a fantastic opportunity to attract and mould new talent as well as develop existing staff so that businesses have the skills they need to raise productivity, boost growth and increase levels of innovation.”
Armed robbery at Hillsborough travel agents DETECTIVES investigating an armed robbery at a travel agents in Hillsborough on the evening of Wednesday August 16 are appealing for any witnesses to please come forward to help catch those responsible. At around 5.30pm, a stolen, black Volkswagen Polo pulled up outside Thomson travel agents on Middlewood Road from the direction of Langsett Road, and a man got of the passenger side of the car with what has been described as a sledgehammer.
He then smashed the glass door and reached through to unlock it and entered the store. The driver of the car then entered the store with what is believed to have been a sawn-off shotgun.
They both threatened staff and demanded cash from the safe. The driver left the store and pulled back up moments later in the Polo and beeped the horn. The man then ran from the shop with a substantial amount of cash and got into the vehicle.
The car then sped off onto Holme Lane and towards the Loxley and Stannington areas.
DC Rob Lewis investigating said: “This is an extremely distressing incident for the staff involved, who thankfully were not injured but are understandably, incredibly shaken by what has happened. “Both men wore dark coloured clothing, hooded tops with the hoods up and they both had their faces partially covered.
“We are determined to apprehend the two men responsible, and have already made numerous enquiries into the robbery and we are looking at CCTV footage to further develop any leads, but I would please ask the public for any help or information they can provide to assist with investigation. “Were you in the area at the time? Did you witness the robbery? Maybe you saw the black Polo, registration number LM66 GVU which was stolen in a burglary on 14 August from the Fulwood
area, either just prior to the incident, or afterwards? “Anything at all, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please call us on 101, or make contact with Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.” If you have any information, please quote incident number 870 of 16 August 2017 when calling.

During the course of the day the team seized three motorbikes, which were being used unlawfully and reported the riders for a number of driving offences in each case. They will all face a court appearance in the coming weeks. Officers said they would be exploring if any of them have breached
their tenancy agreement through their actions. On their travels, the team also found and recovered a brand new vehicle that had recently been stolen, which was damaged and abandoned. More operations are planned in the area over the coming weeks.

In this instalment, I will be providing you with some easy and effective exercises specifically designed for older people. Everyone knows that it’s good to exercise to stay fit and healthy, but with adults aged 65 and over spending an average of 10 hours a day sitting down, maintaining an exercise regime for older people is vital. Whilst you should check with your doctor before engaging in any kind of exercise, the following are simple, lowintensity NHS-recommended exercises which can still make a difference to your health and wellbeing: To develop and maintain upper back flexibility, sit on a chair
and cross your arms with your hands on your shoulders. Using just your upper body, twist to the left and hold for five seconds before twisting to the right. To stretch your calves, place both hands against a wall and, keeping both feet flat, bend one leg whilst stepping the other behind you, keeping it straight. You will feel the stretch in the straightened leg. Repeat with the opposite leg and alternate three times.
To strengthen leg muscles place your hands on the back of a chair and stand with your feet hip-width apart. Slowly bend your knees as far as you can, keeping your back straight. Slowly raise yourself up and repeat five times.

Can you really get fit in 20 minutes per week? MY name is James Evans, editor of Look Local, and I’m taking part in a three-month trial at fit20 at Stocksbridge’s Fox Valley. My fitness is terrible, no other way of putting it! Although I have been to gyms in the past and have undertaken various other training regimes, I’ve eventually given up and gone back to being overweight. So when Niri Patel at fit20 said he could help improve my fitness with a 20-minute workout every week, without even breaking into a sweat, it sounded right up my street! If you find going to the gym is too time consuming, then the brand new multi-award winning fit20 at Stocksbridge's Fox Valley could be just the thing to get you fit and healthy. fit20 is all about getting you fit in just 20 minutes per week with their personalised HIT (high intensity
training) sessions which exercise the five major muscle groups i.e. legs, arms, abdomen, shoulders, chest and back. Under personalised supervision, your muscles are worked just beyond their limits, and since your body is great at responding and adapting to change, your muscles grow stronger and your metabolism is optimised. This calm and contemporary flagship studio is headed by Niri Patel and he is keen to let people know that fit20 avoids 'The Three Ms' that most people hate about normal gyms – music, mirrors and minging smells! The training consists of slow and controlled movements in a cool, air conditioned studio which means no sweat and no need to change into gym clothes - this makes it perfect for slotting into a busy lifestyle between work and picking the kids up from school.
All of your sessions are supervised by a personal trainer and make use of the latest technology to track your progress and weekly results. The personal trainer will ensure that you focus and work hard, carry out all training in the correct way with the correct posture, and most importantly, that you are completely safe. I’ve had three workouts now and although I can’t say I’ve felt a difference in everyday life yet, the exercises have certainly got easier and other clients have enjoyed fantastic results, including Garry Anderson who has increased his strength by 42% after 24 sessions. The numbers don’t lie! I look forward to my next session. I’ll write another article soon and I’ll include some of my own numbers. Stay tuned! fit20 can be found at Harry Brearley House at Fox Valley in the purpose built fitness suite.
Campaign to save Burncross Post Office gathers momentum ECCLESFIELD Parish Councillors are backing the campaign to keep open a popular and wellused Post office service in Burncross. The future for post office services in the area currently looks uncertain following the Co-op’s purchase of the Costcutter site where the post office is currently located. The co-op has outlined no plans to retain a Post Office at their new Store.
Ecclesfield Parish councillors have stated that they do not think this is good enough and have backed a petition signed by over 1,600 local residents to retain the post office. Parish councillors have also given their support to Labour MP Angela Smith’s campaign to keep the store open, with Mrs Smith having written to both the Co-op and the Post Office demanding that a service is maintained at the new store, and is seeking to mediate between them both.
Labour Councillor Zoe Sykes said: “I am devastated that the Co-op may not be retaining a post office service in the new store, and will do everything I can to see this decision reversed. We are united across the Parish Council that we need to retain this vital service. “The post office was profitable, well-used and well liked. If Burncross loses this service residents will have to travel to Chapeltown or Grenoside and for many older residents this is not at all convenient.
“If the area loses its post office it will also lose its only local post box. It would be a real loss for local residents and we will do everything we can to work with the Co-op and Post Office to find a solution. “I simply cannot understand why a profitable community service would be scrapped, especially by a reputable organisation such as the Co-op.”

Chapeltown baths First time writer, long time reader. I can't believe that no one has brought up the state of the Chapeltown baths. I went for a swim the other day and was shocked that it's seemingly been closed down, where are we meant to swim now?
This further exacerbates the nonsense of having two rival bus companies, which halved their revenues, leaving them no option but to raise fares to cover their cost floors – instead of the lowered fares that competition was supposed to deliver. I've lived behind the pool for the majority of my life Liebore were against privatising the buses, but then and remember it in its heyday when you couldn't made it all worse by actually adding to the pointless competition with their own pet project. keep us out of there.
It only seems like yesterday that Adrian Moorhouse If it had been the old full tram network reinstated, was inspiring us all to get in the pool and do a few then that would be very different; but the vast expense always precluded that possibility. Time: midday. Place: Asda, Chapeltown car park. A very big thank you to the person who placed my car key (which had fallen from my key ring) just in sight under my car. I didn't even know I had lost it until I returned to my car. Thanks again for your honesty and thoughtfulness.
Debate about the 57 bus cuts In reply to David Lawson’s riposte. We need a fast bus service: we aren’t going to get a railway! The problem with Stocksbridge/Deepcar buses is obvious to all - not least Mr Minto (thanks for agreeing, Craig!) - bar ‘Stocksbridge Railway’ proponent David Lawson, who wants the buses to be naff to justify extending the tram.

Stocksbridge – steel town to take away town? Who should be best suited to decide on whether or not Stocksbridge has yet another take away? Stocksbridge people, backed by Stocksbridge Town Council, or City Councillors who represent Richmond, Graves Park, Stannington, Broomhill and Sharrow, Southey, Ecclesall, Dore and Totley, Hillsborugh, Darnall, Shiregreen and Brightside, Beighton and finally West Ecclesfield?
NHS cuts I read with much concern that the British Medical Association (BMA) claim that we the public are being kept in the dark about further "damaging" cuts planned to help destroy our beloved National Health Service. It appears the BMA submitted freedom of information requests about proposals to cap NHS spending, asking for the government to provide the full document or any significant details of the plans in the pipeline.
Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content. Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.
Health service leaders responded in a lukewarm manner which raised fears within the BMA that the plans could extend waiting times, reduce access to services, cut down on prescriptions and treatments, and merge or close hospitals and facilities. Have we not over previous years experienced cut after cut to our NHS on similar lines to what seems to be in the pipeline? It seems to me that the plans in hand is a further nail in the coffin to bring in full privatisation. John Yale, High Green resident.

The Start of Autumn
Summer is drawing to a close and Autumn is just around the corner – what a perfect time to think about planting – the soil is warm and the Autumn rains will get plants established before the Winter sets in.
It’s also a good time to take stock of your garden and think about any changes or plans you want to make. Keeping colour in borders for as long as possible is top of the ‘to do’ list for September, so you may like to consider incorporating late Summer or Autumn flowering plants such the Aster. The name Aster comes from the ancient Greek word for ‘star’, although they are often referred to as Michaelmas daisies
because of their typical flowering period in the Autumn.
Asters come in blue, purple, red, pink and white each with a yellow centre. There are numerous varieties of Aster, from dwarfs that measure less than a foot to tall versions that can reach up to eight feet. All varieties make for good cut flowers and are easy plants for beginners to try in the garden. They thrive well in drained, fertile soil that retains moisture and prefer full sun or partial shade. It’s also the time of year that nurseries and garden centres have great offers on big bags of mixed Daffodil bulbs, in all shapes and sizes. They can grow pretty much anywhere, even through the lawn.

are planted in a pot, put in a dark cool place (a garage or shed) for 10-12 weeks and then bring out into the light so flowering can start.
The easiest way to work out how deep to plant your bulb is to dig down approximately three times the depth of the bulb – but be warned, if you plant Daffodils too close to the surface they often won’t flower. You can plant Daffodils, and Crocuses, from September to October – as many as you can get into the ground or in containers.
Once planted you need do nothing else to them other than wait for a stunning show in the Spring. If you’re planting in lawns, cut out three sides of a square and lift back the turf, put in a few bulbs and then firm the turf back again. As it’s bulb season, you could also plant hyacinth bulbs in pots, by midSeptember, so that you have a glorious Christmas display. Once the hyacinths

September is when autumn begins to creep into your garden, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to let it all go to seed – keep busy with the following jobs …. • Look after your lawn – weed it and seed it • Pick and harvest summer fruits • Bring tender houseplants inside • Continue to sow vegetables • Clear out the greenhouse • Collect and sow seeds gathered from plants in the garden • Plant spring flowering bulbs

Good Food & Drink
Good Food & Drink
AS a nation we all enjoy eating out in restaurants, cafes and bars. It gives us the opportunity to have someone else cook, serve and allows us to try something new. However, as with everything, there are pros and cons with restaurant dining which are worth exploring. With our daily lives getting busier as the years role on, convenience and time saving measures are more and
more important to us. Having someone cook for and serve you removes the worry of going to the supermarket and spending time preparing meals. Eating out allows us to continue with our hectic schedules whilst still satisfying our culinary appetites. We all enjoy trying something new and embracing different cultures and traditions.
Restaurants in towns and cities across the UK are specialising in all types and styles of menus allowing us to sample exotic cuisines from across the globe. A key benefit of eating in restaurants is that it provides the opportunity to try something that normally we wouldn’t cook or serve ourselves. As paying guests we all have certain expectations regarding quality and service within restaurants.
Although generally service and quality over the decades has improved considerably if we are not satisfied we have the right to complain and demand improvements. This key benefit should result in a consistent standard and value for your hard earned cash. Everyone enjoys the sense of occasion and atmosphere of eating out, whether it be a family occasion or a romantic candle lit dinner for two.

Good Pub & Grub Guide
A gap in BBQ knowledge in Sheffield THE Food Standards Agency offers up top tips for safe summer eating as Sheffield residents get out their barbecues for the bank holiday
Humber said they never change chopping boards between different types of food; more than any other English region, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Thursday August 24 marks National Burger Day in the UK, and with households across Sheffield planning to get grilling over the bank holiday weekend, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is issuing top tips on how to ensure your barbecue is safe and enjoyable for all.
A snapshot survey, conducted by the FSA, also highlighted that 36% of people in Sheffield have been served undercooked meat at a barbecue, potentially contributing to the 1 million cases of food poisoning in the UK every year.
The FSA’s Food & You survey has indicated a gap in Sheffield residents’ knowledge around food hygiene and, amongst other things, the importance of cooking meat thoroughly. It found that nearly a third (32%) of people in Yorkshire and the
The survey also found that, despite over a quarter of Sheffield residents (26%) saying they worry about food hygiene at barbecues, many admit failing to check the meat in the correct way before serving it: 63% don’t check there is no pink meat inside; 66% don’t check that the

juices run clear; and 85% don’t check that the meat is steaming hot. 57% of people in Sheffield expected to attend or host a barbecue this year, and cases of food poisoning from Campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella rise in the summer months. A rare beef burger, for example, is three times more likely to contain harmful E. coli bacteria than a well-cooked burger, which is why burgers should be thoroughly cooked at home, until steaming hot all the way through. It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Chambers hits hat-trick Oughtibridge WMFC 5-4 Wadsley Bridge Pheasant IN the War Memorial’s final friendly before the league programme begins they came up against 2016 League and Cup winners Wadsley Bridge Pheasant from the Premier Division. In the early exchanges both team went close with Pheasant going closest and also hitting a post before Oughtibridge raced into a 4-0 lead with some superb attacking play. Callum Chambers scored two outstanding goals either side of Chas Tunnard’s strike and with Matt
Harrison adding a fourth Oughtibridge looked set to run riot. The Pheasant did manage to pull one back just before the half time whistle but in the second half Callum Chambers completed his hat-trick when he went racing through with 15 minutes left and slotted past the keeper. The away team almost made a remarkable comeback scoring three goals in the last five minutes but the whistle came and Oughtibridge’s impressive unbeaten pre-season continued.

Pigs reinstated into Division Three AS a result of restructuring in the Yorkshire Leagues, Stocksbridge Rugby Club have held on to their place in Division Three for the coming season.
STEELS CRASH OUT OF CUP
Colwyn Bay 3-0 Stocksbridge PS STEELS exited the FA Cup at the preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup, Losing to Colwyn Bay 3-0. Steels were without key defenders Matt Reay and George Grayson but gave a debut to new signing Rory Coleman. It is Coleman’s third spell at the club. He joins from Matlock town. Coleman, who left at the start of last season to join Ilkeston Town, scored 21 goals the season before and started his career with Scunthorpe United. A left sided player who was equally comfortable in midfield or at the back, he is something of a dead ball specialist which is something the Steels have missed since Harrison Biggins joined Fleetwood Town. But he couldn’t help the Steels claim victory here with Colwyn Bay taking the lead through Jamie Rainford on 25 minutes. They increased their lead midway through the second half through Danny Collins and Astley Mulholland completed the win on 77 minutes. Steels are at home next Saturday to Stamford with a kick off of 3pm.
The Pigs eventually finished last season eight points from safety, but a massive 27 points ahead of bottom team Halifax and remained very competitive in the division. Speaking ahead of the coming season, head coach Gam Kassim was full of optimism: “We’ve managed to maintain the majority of our squad for the coming season and surely have what is the best forward pack in the division with the towering pair of Liam Roebuck and Sam Whitaker at second row, plus Pete Newton, Ben Brown, Reece Aspin, Tom Spencer and Ricky Rowett all competing for just
three back row positions.
“Add to that a front row which includes big impact forward Joe Smith, workhorses Ricky James, Connor Brown and Gary Woodcock, plus the creativity of hooker Rhys Keenan and you have a scrum which is not only youthful but aggressive and mobile. “The one down side this year is that we’ve lost the creativity of a fantastic stand off in Paul Kelly and the devastating running of inside centre Dave Brown, both of whom have moved on to pastures new. “However, the team will still feature the wing-heeled pairing of Joe Jones and Ryan Smith, together with stalwarts Adam Frith, Ben Westby and Liam O’Leary, plus we’re all looking forward to the mercurial Stefan
Kazmierski adding some much needed pace and dynamism from full back.” The team’s final preseason game sees them aiming to defend their Bradfield Brewery Cup on Saturday August 26 at Coal Pit Lane. The opposition will be much stronger this year in the form of Division Two side Barnsley and fellow Division Three team Rotherham Phoenix, whilst local neighbours Sheffield Oaks, led by former Pigs coach Andy Tyers, will prove a stern test. The club are always on the lookout for players who feel they could improve the team and if you’d like to get involved just give Gam a call on 07860 910213, or pop up to the game on the 26th.
