Lifting the lid on what’s possible. If you think you have a problem, you probably do. Whether it’s the money you don’t have in your bank account, a toxic relationship you are trying to let go of, or your concerning relationship with alcohol or drugs. That feeling, deep down in your body that something’s not right is in fact your barometer - of truth. And, sometimes the truth is scary. But why is that? For as long as humans have lived we have created and passed down meaning and beliefs. We have become master survivalists and learned that pain is bad, fear is dangerous and that in order to be lovable you must achieve, succeed, and be in control. We have also mastered the art of deferring pain and discomfort. If you have a headache, take a pill. If you feel self conscious, have a drink. If you are in a mid-life crisis, buy a convertible and land a partner 20 years younger than yourself.

Often, with knowing that things need to change comes a mental barrage of fear, stigmas, negative beliefs and what if’s. Uncertainty, pain and shame scare us, so we avoid, defer and hope it goes away. It seems reasonable enough, «ėđ ģÌ đ ÏÄ đ̺Ąº ģ Ĉ ³ÏĵºĄºêđ way? What if moving in the direction of the discomfort is the thing that would empower and free you? What if your self doubt is made up – old and selflimting beliefs that keep you ÄĄóè áÏĢÏêÆ áÏĺ ĸáẳ ģÏđÌ the things you value most – friendships, family, and peace. If there is one universal truth, it is that change is inevitable. In every moment of our lives the very matter that we are made of is changing – our cells are growing and dying, our heart is pumping and our «Ąº đÌ ÏĈ ĄÌĩđÌèÏ ááĩ ĹóģÏêÆ in and out. We are by our very nature, hard-wired for change.
But here’s the kicker – change takes time. The process of lasting and sustainable Ì êƺ áóóÞĈ ³ÏĵºĄºêđ ÄóĄ everyone, and there are as many methods for change as there are people on this planet. If you have fought and you have lost, keep going. If you have kept going and it is not ģóĄÞÏêÆɊ ĸê³ êóđ̺Ą ģ ĩ ê³ keep going! Most importantly, if you are carrying the weight of your struggles by yourself – reach out and ask for help, because your happiness and your life matter. – Michael Walsh Michael is a Sober Coach who works with individuals and families caught in unhelpful patterns of problematic substance use.

HMCS OTTAWA/HMCS WINNIPEG Adult Workshop Topics The MFRC has a variety of programs designed to help military members and their family cope with the significant challenges of deployment. Making Connections If you’ve moved around a bit, you’ve probably made new friends along the way, and lost touch with other friends. Were there other parents that you got together with through your children’s school; or couples that you got to know through your partner’s work; or friends that you made at your work? This workshop is about the challenges of making and keeping friends while living the military lifestyle and the importance of a strong network during a deployment. Location: CPAC MFRC Wed Apr 5 6:30-8:30pm Free Transitions Every time something changes in your life you undergo a period of transition, a period when you react and adjust emotionally to the new situation. Everyone manages transitions in their own way. By understanding the process of transition it will help you understand the emotions that you may experience and will provide meaning to you in order to find ways to adjust to this change. Location: CPAC MFRC Wed May 17 6:30-8:30pm Free Stress Busters Stress is an individual response to a gap between resources and demands. Demands and resources can come from the individual and/ or the environment. In order to manage stress we have to take time to reflect on the situation that we are facing and identify what we can control and change in order to reestablish the equilibrium. In this workshop, we’ll look at some stress buster tools you can use during the deployment. Location: CPAC MFRC Wed June 14 6:30-8:30pm Free Re-establishing Your Relationship Do you have concerns about what things will be like once your partner has returned from their deployment? You may find that re-establishing intimacy after a long separation can be challenging. This workshop will provide you with information to understand the different forms of intimacy, identify roadblocks that may prevent you from achieving it and provide you with tools that will help you re-establish intimacy. Location: CPAC MFRC Wed July 12 6:30-8:30pm Free

Q: I have coached Q: ed minor mi hockey for several years and always and fair play. At the start of every season, I reencourage ge safe a mind my players to wear all their protective equipment for every game and practice. I specifically stress how important helmets are for preventing concussions. At hockey school this summer my son was told hockey helmets don’t protect against concussions— is this true? — Coach Tim A: Dear Coach; Thank you so much for volunteering to work in minor sports. Considerable research and millions of dollars have been invested into the design of protective helmets for many different sports. Despite this enormous investment there continues to be no such thing as a concussion-prevention helmet for any sport – it doesn’t matter how much money you are willing to spend on a helmet. Having said the above, it is important to recognize that helmets continue to be important pieces of protective equipment. When properly worn, helmets are effective at preventing cuts to the scalp, brain bleeds, and skull fractures. Unfortunately they all have limited effectiveness against concussions, largely because of the way humans are designed. Try thinking of the skull as nature’s hockey helmet. It has a hard bony exterior, a set of protective membranes, and the brain essentially floats in a pool of fluid. As a result of this design, when a person gets hit, the brain can move around inside the skull. If someone is hit hard enough the brain will bang into the bony walls inside the skull, and essentially get bruised at the points of impact. In addition, almost all hits apply some rotational force to the head, and this will subject the brain to sheer forces that can cause microscopic tears to the brain and its blood vessels. Experts agree that for a helmet to protect the brain from these types of forces it would have to be so big and awkward that it would leave the neck vulnerable to injury. Bottom line is that helmets protect your head – they do not protect your brain. So even if someone is wearing a helmet, a hit to the head can do to the brain what a car crash does to the passengers. Rather than focussing on making a better helmet, a far more effective strategy to reduce the incidence of a concussion would be to focus attention on teaching athletes to play safer and smarter. Exercise is medicine!

PADI Bubblemaker (8yrs +)
AQUATICS
SASY (Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth) (5-8 yrs) Can’t wait to try SCUBA diving? No problem! Aquarius Dive Club offers children as young as 5 years old their first breath on SCUBA with the Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth (SASY) Program. In the SASY program, children 5 to 8 years old wear a Buoyancy Compensator Device (BCD) and SCUBA equipment, but stay on the surface to experience breathing from a regulator while floating. The BCD is like a life preserver, and holds a real scuba tank with a functioning regulator and air gauge. However, the BCD is not weighted, so the child remains positively buoyant at the surface of the pool. It’s fun, easy and safe. All instructors are PADI certified dive instructors. Register early to avoid class cancellation.
Does your child want to see what it’s like to breath and swim underwater? Or perhaps you’re considering a family vacation and you’d like to bring your children diving with you! The PSP Aquarius Dive club is offering this program to the Formation for next to nothing. Costs cover the expenses of the program. The instructor for the program is a qualified dive instructor with PADI and is there to support the needs of the children. It’s fun, easy and safe. Register early to avoid class cancellation. The PADI Bubblemaker experience is a great way to introduce children to SCUBA diving in a pool in less than six feet of water. For specific details on the program call Shawn Falconer: 250-661-7327 Mario Robillard (en français): 778-433-6866 To register call PSP Recreation at 250 363 1009. Location: Naden Pool Dates: Every Second Sunday June Sessions: June 11 & 25 SS17AQU319 Cost includes all required equipment and lessons for both SASY and Bubblemaker $40 Regular / $45 Ordinary / $50 Associate

PSP Reconditioning Program The primary objective of the PSP Reconditioning Program is to support Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members as they recover from an illness or injury by providing consistent and seamless physical fitness programs and services with the goal of supporting them as they return to active duties. The Physical Exercise Specialist (PES) and the Regional Adapted Fitness Specialist (RAFS) implement the Reconditioning Program at CFB Esquimalt. They provide customized training plans to support each military member in achieving their personal fitness goals. The Reconditioning Program compliments the services provided by physiotherapists and clinicians in an effort to maximize recovery from injury/illness.
Rehabilitation for Performance (R4P) Musculoskeletal dysfunctions are the most common injury reported by CAF members. R4P was created to provide graduated, phasic, and quadrant-specific exercise programming for CAF personnel. All R4P programs are movement-based and designed to deliver functional challenges specific to the CAF. R4P programming consists of three quadrant specific programs: a. Upper quadrant (U-R4P) designed for retraining cervicothoracic region (neck/upper back) and shoulder. b. Lower quadrant (L-R4P) designed for retraining knee, ankle, and foot dysfunctions; and c. Spine (S-R4P) designed for retraining thoracolumbar (mid/ lower back), hip, and top-down knee dysfunctions.

CFSA “Junior” Sailing Programme
Junior Programme Questions?
The Junior Programme at the Canadian Forces Sailing Association (CFSA) is alive and well and is an excellent complement to the Summer Learn to Sail (LTS) courses! We offer continuing opportunities to motivated young sailors to build on or refresh skills gained over the summer LTS program. Sailors have opportunities to learn more advanced skills, develop experience racing, form crews and be members of their own sailing club. Junior Membership: Membership at CFSA is open to all participants of the Learn to Sail programme. With membership come opportunities to join a Jr executive and shape how your programme is run. Drop in Sailing Days: Spring and fall provide opportunities for drop in sailing days which will be announced via e-mail when volunteer supervision can be arranged. Parents should check to ensure that there is appropriate supervision for the skill level and age of the junior that is dropping in. Junior Skills Weekends: A structured skills building programme will take place on Sundays from 9 April - 18 June 1100-1300 with breaks for CFSA’s opening day and Victoria Day. This is an opportunity for juniors to refresh skills and learn basic racing. It is open to juniors who have successfully attained CANSAIL 1. Ideally juniors come with friends to form crews so they can build teams together. Cost: $60.00

SAILING CFSA Summer “Learn To Sail” Programme Learn to Sail at the Canadian Forces Sailing Association! We offer courses for Youth and Adults of all ages, from beginner to advanced. CFSA is a wonderful place to learn to sail, with favourable winds and a protected harbour. Sharing a harbour with the Naval Dockyard, there are always exciting things happening in the bay. Our one and two week programmes are a great way for kids, adults and families to enjoy their summer learning on the water! Our instructors are nationally certified through Sail Canada and trained in how to teach sailing, as well as first aid and boat rescue. We follow the Sail Canada CANSail curriculum of instruction. The CANSail curriculum allows individuals to progress at their own rate and comfort level. While the Basic Sailing curriculum can be covered in one week, two weeks are spent giving more time to consolidate skills. If you book the same course twice you save $50 on the total registration fee. If a course isn’t running when you want to register for it, please contact us and we will see if there is an equivalent or way to get you sailing that week. Did You Know? High School students with 100 or more hours of Sailing Instruction can apply for 4 high school credits!

We know that summer camps often cause conflicts with work, so we offer a way to drop your kids off early and stay a little while after class. Games and other on-shore activities keep kids busy as well as few small learning opportunities while hanging out with an instructor. If you are interested in this, please email us a week before your course or talk to the Head Instructor on the first morning during registration.

And for those wanting to learn to ride from scratch: We are now affiliated with “Learn to Ride” (a motorcycle training company that teaches new riders), who provide Club members with a discount on training courses. Model Railroad Club The model Railway Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 plus feet by 40 plus feet. These modules are continuously updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control (DCC) systems. The N Scale layout is currently completing conversion to DCC but this does not preclude DC locomotives from being run on the layout. The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also 30 plus by 40 plus feet and has completed conversion to DCC. Again this does not preclude DC locomotives from enjoying the wonders of the layout. Some of these modules depict logging operations, mining operations and a locomotive servicing facility. Both of these layouts have been on public display and have won multiple awards as “Best Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating Layout”; and “Best Module” at train shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout at “Christmas in the Village” is the perennial favourite display at the Saanich Historical Artefacts Society Christmas presentation.
