Ask the Expert - In-line skating is a good alternative to running Q: I have been running regularly for over 20 years and I now find that if I run more than two days in a row my hips get sore. I am considering in-line skating several days a week to see if this reduces the impact on my body. My problem is that in-line skating looks almost effortless and I am concerned that while it may be better for my ageing joints, it will offer little in terms of fitness benefits. How do running and in-line skating compare in terms of fitness benefits? – Jonathon A: Dear Jonathon Congratulations on leading by example in terms of your long-term commitment to living an active lifestyle. Whether you are trying to reduce the impact load on your body or just looking to change up your training routine, research shows inline skating has a lot to offer in terms fitness benefits. Let’s compare in-line skating and running using five criteria: • Calories burned - Studies show rollerblading at a steady pace will burn approximately 528 calorie/hour while running at a comfortable pace burns approximately 720 calories/hour. Skating faster, skating uphill and do-

ing intervals can increase your calorie burning to over 900 calories/hour. Not too shabby! Aerobic fitness - Running provides greater aerobic fitness gains than inline skating. This is because you can coast on in-line skates, but you can’t coast while running. However, in-line skating has been shown to be better for aerobic fitness development than cycling. Muscle building - The body motion required to in-line skate provides a more complete muscle building workout than running and if you swing your arms vigorously the benefits are even greater. In-line skating truly can provide a great lower body, core and upper body workout. Impact - In-line skating subjects your body to 50 per cent less impact forces than running. This is a significant benefit especially for people who are ageing and have some wear and tear on their knees, hips, and backs. Core strengthening - In-line skating requires more balance and coordination than running, and this will definitely help strengthen your core musculature.

OPTOMETRISTS

The bottom line is that in-line skating is an excellent lower impact exercise alternative. Regardless of how skilled you are, remember to wear a helmet when you do this sport, and other protective equipment such as knee and elbow pads if you are not experienced. Have fun cruising on the trails. Exercise is medicine!

DFIT.ca Defence fitness for families Family members of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel and veterans can now make use of DFIT.ca For Families. It is a newly opened portal on the DFIT website that provides access to fitness and health programming previously only available to serving members. “Supporting the culture of fitness in the CAF has meant providing military members with the tools and resources they need to be fit and fight,” says Daryl Allard, Director of Fitness, Sport, and Health Promotion at CF Morale and Welfare Services in Ottawa. “But if we really want to impact the culture of fitness, we have to support family members of those serving.” The DFIT website was launched October 2012 in an effort to broaden the reach of fitness programming to military members, as part of the Canadian Armed Forces health and physical fitness strategy. “The DFIT website generated quite a bit of momentum initially,” says Allard, who adds that within the first six months of the launch about 10,000 people had registered with the site, eventually increasing to 28,000 registered users. “But momentum has slowed down, so we wanted to move beyond regular members and cater to the community that is one million strong, including family members and veterans.” Allard and his team partnered with the programming company Kinduct Technologies to re-develop the original DFIT site, making it more mobile-friendly, quicker to load, and easier to manoeu-

ver, meaning users can access the site to follow workouts on their phone while at the gym. New upgrades include a specialized fitness program generator that allows a member preparing for deployment to enter his or her health and fitness information into a system to produce an individualized fitness program. “You can enter the number of weeks you have until deployment, how many weeks you’d like to work out, whether or not you have access to fitness equipment, and your level of fitness,” says Allard. From there a fitness program is generated that is tailored to a member’s specific job, depending on whether he or she is in the army, navy, air force, or are involved in domestic operations. Users can then log and rate their workouts. Also available is the meal planner, which allows a user to input their weight maintenance, loss, or gain goals, level of physical activity, and height and weight to generate meal plans. “Again, you have that same flexibility as with the fitness programming feature,” says Allard. “If the program includes something you are allergic to or don’t like, you can easily switch to an alternative.” Another useful feature on the site is the on-the-road guide to healthy eating options. The guide provides nutrition information on foods available at Subway, Tim Hortons, or McDonald’s. Using their CFOne card<https://www. cfmws.com/en/OurServices/CFOne/

Pages/default.aspx> number, military family members, veterans and their families can access the DFIT.ca module for free through a special grant until January 2017. CFMWS is in the process of finding funds to continue the free service. Access to DFIT.ca is also available to all other categories of CFOne members, such as NPF employees, DND public servants, RCMP officers, pensioners, and their families, on a paid subscription basis. Military members need only the last four numbers of their service number and their last name. “We are pretty excited about the changes and the fact that we are able to reach a larger segment of our audience means we can have a greater impact on people’s health and fitness,” says Allard.

Military Lifestyle 101 connects newcomers to the community Kaitlyn Kokoska MFRC Volunteer It can be difficult to dive into a community with such a long standing history like the military. As a newcomer, you might be thinking “Where do I even start?” To ease the transition into the lifestyle, the MFRC hosts a Military

Lifestyle 101 workshop that offers techniques and advice about the many successes and learning opportunities that happen in military families and within the community. The workshop is a great first step if you’re wanting to become involved in the community, and want to learn about what to expect as a

newcomer. Facilitators go over the basics by explaining things like common values of the military, and the usual dialogue you might encounter. The long list of acronyms used in the military can feel a bit like learning a new language, but the MFRC support staff are here to help you through all of that and more. Throughout the workshop, the facilitators familiarize participants with the culture and provide information on online resources or informational guides. Holly Flower, a facilitator of the most recent Military Lifestyle 101 workshop in the Fall of 2016 and social worker at the MFRC, is always ready to support the families in the military community. “We all need to make connections,” said Flower, “I like to create a place of safety, where people can ask questions and make connections that people can take even out of the room.” In addition to the valuable learning tools the facilitator provides, the workshop also holds a Q&A session, which gives participants a chance to share their worries coming into the lifestyle. What is it like to be away from your spouse? What is it like to raise children as a temporary single parent? Long-standing military families share their

own experiences that provide comfort and reassurance to the newcomers. Most families used to the lifestyle know that it’s all about perception, especially come deployment time. “You can spend [the deployment] being miserable, or you can spend it being positive, so build a support around yourself,” said one participant in the Fall 2016 workshop. The overall theme of the workshop was to always be proactive about your situation. “It’s okay to ask for help, like don’t ever think you need to go it alone,” said a military family member in a video showcased at the workshop, “There are people that are there for you whether it’s your family, your friends, the MFRC.” The MFRC offers many resources from deployment checklists to childcare support, to counseling services-If you need help, the MFRC, and the community will be there. Keep an eye out for the next Military Lifestyle 101 workshop this spring for your first step into an exciting lifestyle full of opportunities. Even families who are already familiar to the lifestyle can learn something and make new connections.

Ask the Expert - I need to drop a few pounds! Q: I was recently told by my medical officer that if I gain another 2.3 kilograms [five pounds] I’ll be considered obese. I have always been husky and was never bothered by my ‘Molson Muscle’ but an injury last year caused me to be less active and I really packed on the pounds. Now, my health is starting to suffer and my cholesterol and blood pressure are both creeping up. Other than busting my butt in the gym, does the CAF have any programs to help me lose some weight? – Nick A: Dear Nick: The simple answer is yes. Obesity is a complex issue and it increases your risk of developing health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, cancer, elevated cholesterol, and heart disease. The good news is that research shows making healthy lifestyle choices through diet and exercise, getting adequate sleep, and good stress management can help you manage your weight.

Strengthening the Forces (STF) is the CAF’s Health Promotion program and it is geared towards people looking to make healthy lifestyle changes. STF offers quality programs with evidencebased research and skill building that you would likely find very helpful. Here are some programs I would recommend for you: 1. Weight Wellness Lifestyle Program— focuses on setting realistic goals for losing weight and keeping it off. You will learn how to: • Develop a healthy eating plan and adjust portion sizes for healthy weight loss; • Understand and interpret nutrition labels and restaurant menus; • Meal plan and choose healthier snacks; • Manage hunger and food cravings; • See the effect alcohol and other beverages have on weight gain; • Tackle common weight loss myths and fallacies; and

r it Watch fionter! this w PHYSICAL LITERACY programs will build your movement vocabulary. The greater your movement vocabulary is, the greater potential you have to participate in recreational endeavours. NUTRITIONAL programs will educate and engage members in practical solutions to healthy eating.

The bottom line is that STF is an excellent program that has a lot to offer you in terms of your weight loss goals. Contact your local health promotion office www.cfcommunitygateway.com/ en/index.asp and take advantage of what they have to offer. Nicole Houghtaling, RD, Nicole.Houghtaling@forces.gc.ca
