esquimalt About Victoria
sur Victoria
Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, and is the largest of British Columbia’s 6,500 islands. It is known for its temperate climate, natural beauty, recreational sites, and university and colleges.
The city was first settled by Europeans in the 1840s, and incorporated in 1862. As the capital city of B.C., it is home to the provincial legislature and many government offices. From 1843 to present, Victoria has been a naval city and today it is the home of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Pacific Fleet. CFB Esquimalt employs approximately 4,000 military members and 2,000 civilians and is home to Maritime Forces Pacific and Joint Task Force Pacific. CFB Esquimalt contributes over $500 million to the economy through their payroll, supplies, services and construction. It is also the third largest employer in the area. CFB Esquimalt is close to numerous golf courses that are open year-round, and is also only a few hours from world-class skiing and snowboarding (Mt. Washington and Whistler), as well as great surfing (Tofino) and is only minutes from rock-climbing (Fleming Beach). The current population of the Greater Victoria Area is about 350,000. The core municipalities are the City of Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay, followed by the Western Communities (Colwood, Langford, View Royal, Highlands, Metchosin, and Sooke), and the Saanich Peninsula (Central and North Saanich and Sidney.) Greater Victoria is the southernmost urban area in Western Canada; it is located south of the 49th parallel.

For Relocating To Your New Base Relocating to a new base and new city through the Brookfield IRP can be both exciting and daunting when the prospect of purchasing a new property and moving all of your belongings and family to a new city are involved. Go to the Brookfield website to seek information about the Canadian Federal Government Integrated Relocation Program. Brookfield is the current service provider for this program. Locate the Annual Posting Season (APS) Directives from the Canadian Armed Forces. It is here that you will discover how to register and proceed through the program, as well as some general information on exactly what benefits you are entitled to. Once you have received your posting message make an appointment with Brookfield. Now you will get more specific information on your entitlements and how to proceed. After your appointment, Brookfield will send a moving company representative to measure the amount of goods you will be transporting in your move. Schedule a house hunting trip to locate a property that you wish to purchase. The realtors in this guide are a great place to start as they are already BIG military supporters! about the
Home Buyers Plan
The Home Buyers Plan (HBP) is a Canadian federal government program that helps Canadian residents buy a home for the first time. With the Home Buyers Plan you can take up to $25,000 out of your Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) without having to pay taxes on the funds if you are buying your first home. If you buy a home with your spouse or another person you could both withdraw $25,000 under the plan. The plan can also be used to buy a home for a relative who is disabled, although the conditions are slightly different.
Starting two years after your withdrawal, you get 15 years to repay the money to your RRSPs without incurring taxes. If you don’t pay back the required amount in any year, then it is considered taxable income for that year. You can pay back at a faster rate if you wish. The repayments do not affect your RRSP contribution limit for a given year. There are quite a few conditions for the Home Buyers’ Plan, but they are reasonable and some are even lenient. Who is Eligible for the Home Buyers Plan To be eligible to withdraw money from your RRSPs under the Home Buyers Plan: • you must be a Canadian resident
RRSPs Eligible for the Home Buyers Plan Locked-in RRSPs and group plans do not allow withdrawals. The best thing to do is to check with the issuer(s) of your RRSPs to find out which of your RRSPs you will be able to use for the Home Buyers Plan. Homes Eligible for the Home Buyers Plan Just about all homes in Canada qualify for the Home Buyers Plan. The home you buy can be either a resale or a newly built home. Townhouses, mobile homes, condos, and apartments in duplexes are all fine. With cooperative housing, a share that gives you an equity interest qualifies, but one that only gives you a right to tenancy does not.
• you must be the plan owner of the RRSP(s)
How to Withdraw RRSP Funds for the Home Buyers Plan
• you must have a written agreement to buy or build a home
The process of withdrawing RRSP funds is quite simple:
• you can’t own the home for more than 30 days before you withdraw the money
• Fill in Area 1 of the Canada Revenue Agency Form T1036.
• you must intend to occupy the home as your principal place of residence less than a year after you make your withdrawal
• Take the form to a representative of your RRSP issuer and have him/her fill in Area 2. The RRSP issuer will release the withdrawal funds to you without withholding tax.
• you must not have a balance left from previous participation in the Home Buyers Plan
• At income tax time, you will receive a T4RSP tax slip which will show your withdrawal.
• you must be a first-time home buyer. You are considered a first-time home buyer as long as you or your spouse or common-law partner has not owned a house as your principal place of residence for four years beginning January 1 of the fourth year before the year you withdraw the funds.
• You must file your income tax return. Attach the T4RSP slip and also complete Schedule 7 - RRSP Unused Contributions, Transfers, and HBP or LLP Activities. Do not report your withdrawals on any other part of your income tax return.
10
On The Move: A Guide to Relocating
Repaying Your RRSP Withdrawals for the Home Buyers Plan You have 15 years to repay the amount you withdrew from your RRSPs. Repayment starts the second year after your withdrawals. Each year you have to repay 1/15 of the total amount you withdrew. You can repay more each year if you like. In that case you would be required to pay the balance owing divided by the number of years left in your plan. If you don’t repay the amount required, then you must declare the unpaid amount as RRSP income and pay applicable taxes. You must file an income tax return each year, and complete Schedule 7, even if you have no taxes to pay and no income to report. Each year, your income tax Notice of Assessment or Notice of Reassessment will include the amount you have repaid to your RRSPs for the Home Buyers Plan, the balance left, and the amount you have to repay the next year. More on the Home Buyers Plan For detailed information on the Home Buyers Plan see the Canada Revenue Agency Guide Home Buyers’ Plan (HBP) www.cra-arc.gc.ca/hbp/. The guide includes information on the Home Buyers Plan for people with disabilities, and for those who are buying or helping to buy a home for a relative with a disability.

Is home ownership right for you ? With skyrocketing prices in many major cities, owning a home has become more of an option than a given. For some, homeownership is the best investment they’ll ever make, while it’s not the way to go for others. Here are some questions to ask yourself before taking the plunge. Do you really want to own? It sounds great, but are you sure you want to be a homeowner? It’s not only a huge expense, it’s a lifetime of maintenance, renovations, paperwork, and dealing with neighbours. Remember that ownership isn’t the only way to build equity. Regular retirement contributions can also serve you well down the road without the headaches that come with that white picket fence. Can you service the debt? The hardest part of affording a home isn’t saving for the down payment — though that’s not exactly a cinch. It’s affording the over 25 years of mortgage payments, property taxes, utilities, and home repairs that’ll really test your finances. Meanwhile, owning a home doesn’t mean you can ignore life’s other costs such as retirement, an emergency fund, travel, education, daycare, vehicles, food, and more. So take a good hard look at your income, deduct regular expenses and contributions, and ask yourself if you can make the monthly payments.

On The Move: A Guide to Relocating
Are you prepared for the unexpected? Just because interest rates are low now doesn’t mean they’ll stay that way forever. If you buy, make sure you’re in a position to afford higher interest rates down the road. Always use rate comparison sites such as LowestRates.ca to keep your eye on rates and stay informed about the mortgage climate. And speaking of unexpected costs, don’t forget to factor in the hidden closing costs including legal fees, the land transfer tax, and Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) insurance. Are you where you want to stay? Although playing the buy-and-flip game can be tempting, it’s a very risky move. There are no guarantees in real estate. Sage advice says that if you’re in a position to afford, buy in an area where you’re planning to stay. Hopefully you won’t have to take a loss if you ever do need to sell, but buying with the intention of staying tends to be the safer bet. Learn more about mortgages at LowestRates.ca. Military Lifestyle 101
connects newcomers
to the community
Kaitlyn Kokoska
Esquimalt MFRC Volunteer It can be difficult to dive into a community with such a long standing history like the military. As a newcomer, you might be thinking “Where do I even start?” To ease the transition into the lifestyle, the MFRC hosts a Military Lifestyle 101 workshop that offers techniques and advice about the many successes and learning opportunities that happen in military families and within the community. The workshop is a great first step if you’re wanting to become involved in the community, and want to learn about what to expect as a newcomer. Facilitators go over the basics by explaining things like common values of the military, and the usual dialogue you might encounter. The long list of acronyms used in the military can feel a bit like learning a new language, but the MFRC support staff are here to help you through all of that and more. Throughout the workshop, the facilitators familiarize participants with the culture and provide information on online resources or informational guides. Holly Flower, a facilitator of the most recent Military Lifestyle 101 workshop in the Fall of 2016 and social worker at the MFRC, is always ready to support the families in the military community. “We all need to make connections,” said Flower, “I like to create a place of safety, where people can ask questions and make connections that people can take even out of the room.”
14
On The Move: A Guide to Relocating
In addition to the valuable learning tools the facilitator provides, the workshop also holds a Q&A session, which gives participants a chance to share their worries coming into the lifestyle. What is it like to be away from your spouse? What is it like to raise children as a temporary single parent? Long-standing military families share their own experiences that provide comfort and reassurance to the newcomers. Most families used to the lifestyle know that it’s all about perception, especially come deployment time. “You can spend [the deployment] being miserable, or you can spend it being positive, so build a support around yourself,” said one participant in the Fall 2016 workshop. The overall theme of the workshop was to always be proactive about your situation. “It’s okay to ask for help, like don’t ever think you need to go it alone,” said a military family member in a video showcased at the workshop, “There are people that are there for you whether it’s your family, your friends, the MFRC.” The MFRC offers many resources from deployment checklists to childcare support, to counseling services—If you need help, the MFRC, and the community will be there. Keep an eye out for the next Military Lifestyle 101 workshop this spring for your first step into an exciting lifestyle full of opportunities. Even families who are already familiar to the lifestyle can learn something and make new connections.

4 tips
for increasing the value of
your home
You know your home is an investment and with the recent rise in property values you may be considering selling in the foreseeable future. Professional stagers are experts at making changes that will appeal to the most general home buyer. But you don’t need a pro to achieve this effect in your own home.
1
2
The power of paint. No other home improvement project delivers a higher return on investment than a fresh coat of paint in the perfect colour. Clean and brighter colours inside will give your home a spacious, airy feel while a neutral exterior increases curb appeal. Consider Para Paint’s Princess Cut PF 57 or Jo Jo Whitewash PF 17 for indoors; and Humberstone PF 74 for exteriors, a modern option for your trim, garage door or front door. Focus on the kitchen. More than any other item in your kitchen, cabinets take up the most real estate as they are the largest visual feature. But you don’t always need to replace them —simply paint or re-stain the door and drawer fronts. And don’t forget about hardware as this simple switch can change your look and pull together the room’s style. Change, add, or update lighting, as it will make all the difference in the overall viewing of the space, especially after a fresh coat of paint. Buyers always favour a clean, fresh looking kitchen.
3
Cut the clutter. Your goal should be to make your home as clean and airy as possible. Remove personal elements and tidy desks and shelves to exude an easy, elegant feel. To truly pull in the highest bids you’ll want to make visitors feel as if they can live there and move in right away.
4
Light and bright. Proper lighting is key so replace all missing pot lights and burned out light bulbs. Layer lighting so that there is no single point of light. Before visitors come in, open the shades and turn on the table lamps and chandelier. Mirrors are a great way to reflect your multiple light sources and make your space look larger. After that, keep your furniture and accessories minimal and bright. If you have the opportunity to paint older wood furniture, white or light grey will do the trick. Courtesy: News Canada

IT STARTS FROM HOME THE FACTS ABOUT RELOCATION FOR THE MILITARY Through my strong ties to the military community, I offer clients extensive experience with the physical and emotional aspects of relocating. Building on twenty years of experience, and a true passion for what I do, I am here to help families moving to or from Victoria, and get them settled in their new community. My goal is to make your entire experience less stressful and more enjoyable. From my experience of relocating from Pakistan to Germany to start a family, then to Calgary and eventually moving from
Alberta to Victoria in 1994, I truly understand the emotional whirlwind that comes with military relocation. When you relocate, you and your family are moving more than just homes. The financial investment is in your home but other tangible life investments come into play as well; leaving friends behind, changing doctors and schools, and reestablishing neighbourhood haunts. Daily routines change and require time and adaptation.
No matter where you move, every city and every community has unique things to offer. Let’s take Victoria for example. Victoria has diverse and welcoming communities no matter where you might be coming from. If you are unsure on what area to move to, allow me to be your reliable insider, providing you with local information to help you make the right choice. inspect roof your
to put a lid on costly repairs
Scott McGillivray News Canada
While it’s fun to plan things like new flooring, lighting, or paint, one of the most important elements of having a roof over your head is, quite literally, having a functional roof over your head! Your attic and roof protect your family, your home and everything in it, so make an annual inspection part of your routine maintenance. Overlooking this important task can be a very costly mistake that can impact your safety, comfort and expenses. You don’t have to be an expert to identify a problem. Insulation: Check the level of insulation within your attic. Proper levels of insulation can keep temperatures in check, preventing moisture issues, condensation, and premature wear of roofing materials. Over time, some types of insulation tend to settle and compact, which can impact performance. Older homes often have too little insulation, but that’s simple to remedy. Topping up attic insulation is a straightforward DIY task. Look for a stone wool batt insulation that can be cut easily with a serrated knife. A popular choice of contractors and homeowners alike is Roxul Comfortbatt, because it also protects against fire, moisture, and mould. Aim for a depth of 16 inches (41 cm) or an R-value of 50. Insulating properly will improve comfort, while reducing energy consumption and heating costs. Critters: Look for signs of rodents or raccoons. Points of entry can cause your roof to leak, while chewing can give rise to electrical fires. These uninvited houseguests can also soil spaces throughout your attic, potentially impacting air quality. What’s more, they often trample and compact insulation, reducing its thermal resistance.
Ventilation: Proper soffit air intake and roof ventilation can extend shingle life and prevent mould, roof rot, and ice dams in winter. Roof and soffit vents, baffles and fans are easy to install in just a few hours, but consider hiring a professional to ensure the best results. Roof integrity: Inspect the roof for missing, lifted, or curled shingles. Look for signs of aging. As shingles age, you might notice they’ve become more brittle and worn. Curled shingles may be a sign that it’s time to re-roof. Check for rotted plywood or soft spots on the roof. Water penetration: Look for dark spots or trails inside the attic and for signs of outside light. These can be indicators that moisture is present, which will require immediate remediation. to help sell your home When preparing your home for the market, it’s great to know there are some relatively inexpensive improvements that can make a big impact with buyers. Once the fundamentals of a well-maintained home are taken care of, these easy initiatives can seal the deal.
1
Clear the decks. Counter space is extremely important for buyers. Be sure to store kitchen and bathroom items off the counters. Purchase storage baskets in several different sizes to help you clear the decks in a hurry and minimize clutter.
4
Tear up dingy broadloom. You may be pleasantly surprised by what’s underneath. Even if you don’t like what you see, replacing broadloom is one of the most economical improvements you can make when you consider overall return on your dollar.
2
Brighten up storage spaces. Closets and cupboard space are important selling features. You can make the most of what you have by purging unused items and painting a light colour inside cupboards and closets. Adding batteryoperated lighting is also an inexpensive way to brighten a dark closet.
5
Paint. Even high-end interior paints are a bargain when you look at what can be achieved with a fresh new finish. Opt for neutral colours in matte or eggshell finishes to camouflage flaws in walls. Trim is best handled with a white shade of satin, semigloss or high-gloss finish.
3
Replace interior room doors. Quickly and inexpensively brighten hallways and rooms by replacing interior doors and hardware. New white panelled doors and hardware can quickly freshen the home. Look for sales at your local building centre.

With Pets traveling by car?
How can I find pet-friendly hotels for the road? You’ll find a very handy resource in www.hotels.petswelcome.com/canada or www.petswelcome.com for the U.S., where you can search by city for hotels that are pet friendly. Plan your route so that reservations are made in advance for you... and your pet!
Already packed and ready to move? Here’s how you can keep your pet comfortable and safe on the road. These travel tips come courtesy of the pet researchers at Purina. Do not feed your pet for at least three hours before leaving on a trip. Take your dog for a walk just before your start the drive. You will still have to stop along the way, but your dog will be more comfortable as the trip gets underway. During stops, provide fresh drinking water for your dog. You may also reward it with a dog snack for being a good traveler.
Feed your pet shortly after you arrive at your destination or when you have stopped for the day. Here’s what to put in your pet travel kit: food, water, dishes, can opener (if needed), leash, a few treats, favourite toy and some type of bedding. Don’t forget a scooper and plastic bags for cleanup! Reprinted from moving.com
If the drive is eight hours or longer, give your cat the opportunity to use a litter pan and offer it fresh drinking water.

Home insurance TIPS for first time buyers
Buying a home for the first time is a big decision. One of the first and most important things to do after deciding to purchase a home is to secure insurance. Here, Eric Simtob, president of Restoration 1, gives three simple tips new homeowners should know when deciding on home insurance. Shop around. No two policies are identical, so do some research to find which insurance policy works best for you. Ask questions such as: What is my deductible? Are there claim limits, and if so, what are they? Know what’s covered in your insurance policy. Not all disasters that can happen are covered. For example, basic home insurance policies often don’t cover damage caused by sewage back-up, or only cover up to a specific amount. Sewage damage can be extensive and can often result in the homeowner having to pay for a portion of the repairs out-of-pocket. Take the time to understand what’s covered. Know your rights. Homeowners always have the right to choose who works in their home. Often after a flood or fire, insurance companies will insist on sending their preferred contractors. This results in a contractor who works for the insurance company and not you. Research the people you want working on your home before disaster strikes. Online resources such as homestars.ca are available for you to find the best solution for your situation. Courtesy: News Canada

PLD
Post Living Differential
What is the Post Living Differential?
How is Post Living Differential calculated?
The Post Living Differential (PLD) is an allowance designed to stabilize the cost of living of Canadian Armed Forces members and their families to ensure that they enjoy a relative and predictable cost of living no matter where they serve in Canada.
Each year during the February to March timeframe, the PLD rate at each CAF location is reviewed based on the following information:
Background Efforts to obtain a cost of living benefit for military personnel go back at least to the mid-1980s when the Canadian Armed Forces surveyed selected military locations to determine variations in the cost of living. In 1998, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs (SCONDVA) drew public attention to the cost of living difficulties facing many Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. To counter these difficulties, SCONDVA recommended the creation of a cost of living allowance. On June 8, 2000, Treasury Board approved the implementation of PLD, making this allowance the first of its kind for both the CAF and the Federal Government of Canada.
How does the Post Living Differential work? The intent of PLD is to stabilize the overall cost of living for CAF members and their families residing in Canada. PLD is paid to help offset the impact of cost of living changes resulting from relocation, and is paid at locations within Canada where the local cost of living is assessed to be higher than the CAF standard average cost of living.
• The latest Statistics Canada information on family spending patterns; • Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) data on typical hosing types; • National Defence data on the military population at each place of duty. A location with a higher number of military personnel will have a larger impact on the local economy than a location with a lower Canadian Forces population. For example, Ottawa compared to Moncton; and • Actual cost of living data in a wide variety of categories at all places of duty in Canada. PLD is a taxable benefit. As a result, an increment is added when calculating the rates to offset the income tax paid on the allowance. This means that the allowance is increased by the amount of marginal tax to allow for loss through taxation. Once the data has been compiled, changes to the PLD amount for each location are calculated by May. By June/July the new figures are entered into the CAF pay system and the changes are announced to the military members and their families. By July/ August, CAF members will see the changes to PLD on their monthly pay statements. For the current PLD rates go to Chapter 205 - Allowances for Officers and NonCommissioned Members 205.45 - Post Living Differential (PLD): www.forces.gc.ca/en/about-policiesstandards-benefits/toc-ch-205-officerncm-allowance-rates.page

cold lake About COLD Lake
sur COLD Lake
Cold Lake is located at the eastern-most extreme in the province of Alberta. It is approximately 294 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
Incorporated in 1996 through amalgamation of the former towns of Grand Centre, Cold Lake and Canadian Forces Base 4 Wing, Cold Lake became a city in 2000. These three areas are now known as, respectively, Cold Lake South, Cold Lake North and Medley. The three main industries in the area are: military, oil and gas and tourism. Cold Lake has a permanent population of just over 14,000. If choosing a home based on schools in the area, Cold Lake North has an elementary school (K-3), a middle school (4-8), a high school (9-12) and a Catholic elementary school (K-6). Cold Lake South has an elementary school (K-3), a middle school (4-8), two off campus schools (7-9 and 10-12), a Catholic elementary school (K-6) and a Catholic junior/senior school (7-12). There is a francophone school (K-12) which is located between Cold Lake North and Cold Lake South. Post Secondary education is available in the city and the surrounding area at Portage College and Lakeland College. The Art Smith Aviation Academy (ASAA) is located on CFB Cold Lake (K-8). The Academy was taken in by the Northern Lights School District in 2013, where it was before a not-for-profit private school. ASAA is focused on the specialized needs of military dependants while supporting the students of the area surrounding 4 Wing Cold Lake by offering a uniquely aviation focussed program in the ideal setting of the air base. Cold Lake offers a selection of health facilities including the Cold Lake Health Centre and Cold Lake Community Health Services as part of the local Primary Care Network. Private practises are accepting new patients and information on these services is available through the Wing Orderly Room, the Military Family Resource Centre and health information phone lines.

Wainwright About Wainwright Amidst a bold prairie, Wainwright is hard working, community-minded, family-first and recreation master planned. We value what it means to be free. From our foundation lies a future where determination gets you everywhere while recognizing the value of building piles of fall leaves with a child, a game of catch with the dog, or coffee with the neighbour. Wainwright is a community of over 7,000 (including the population of Wainwright Garrison). It is located in east central Alberta near the Battle River Valley and is approx. 2 hours east of Edmonton. We offer a lifestyle that provides the amenities of a modern city, with the availability of big box stores, but still retains the atmosphere of a vibrant rural community. Our quality lifestyle is enhanced by excellent schools for our children, extensive health care facilities and an unlimited array of year-round recreational opportunities. We are full of events year-round including our annual Arts Festival in February and our Wainwright Stampede in June. The Stampede is 4 days of action packed family fun and entertainment. Visitors will enjoy the 5th largest rodeo in Canada including CPCA Chuck Wagon Races, Stampede Parade, Cabaret, a fun filled midway, breakfasts, BBQ’s and much much more! Other sites to see include Wainwright’s Historic Downtown featuring a collection of beautifully restored heritage resources including a business district of 1929 era buildings. As well as our free standing Memorial Clock Tower, Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock at the gates to CFB/ASU which houses a live bison herd and our newly restored 1925 wooden pump jack in Petroleum Park.

Renovating your kitchen can be an intimidating project. With so many decisions to make, renowned designer and stylist Tiffany Pratt shares her trendforward insights after teaming up with The Home Depot Canada to overhaul her kitchen.

Shake it up with Shaker. Shaker-style cabinets are a go-to cabinet style for many designers because they offer beautiful traditional lines that dance within most style genres. “Using Thomasville Nouveau cabinets in off-white meant that I could really do anything within my space. Like a blank canvas, this cabinet style updates the room while still maintaining existing styles,” explains Pratt. Mute the colour with 1980s palette. Adding colour doesn’t always mean going bold and bright. Moving into the next few seasons, colour trends are leaning toward shades that echo the muted, pale mid-tones of the 80s. Inspired by her deep love for pink, Pratt modernized and scaled up the shade by using it in a more grown-up and risky way in a dusty rose hue.

Inject hits of modern. Instead of breaking up your backsplash and countertop into two different types of materials, why not use the same material for both? “In kitchen design I really appreciate crisp, clean lines while still injecting sparkle, texture and pattern,” says Pratt. Give the eye a break by sweeping the same material for both the countertop and backsplash in a Silestone or marbled quartz, and create a modern look with texture. Finding your floor as centrepeice. Look for something with durability, interest and an ability to hide everyday dirt. Pratt chose a full polished marble floor because it was unexpected and graphic. “Like a work of art by Escher, my floor is truly the centerpiece of the space and adds a newness while still fitting into the old bones of my home.” Remember that flooring can be more than functional — it can also be the pattern and art in the room that really makes the space come to life. Consider the white appliances. While most people swoon over stainless steel and the new black appliances, Pratt still loves white. A full spread of white appliances disappear into the space and don’t call too much attention in the room. Chic, clean and effortless, white appliances also echo European design.

SHILO About shilo
sur shilo
As one of the largest employers in southwestern Manitoba, CFB Shilo has a substantial economic impact on the regional economy, including the City of Brandon. CFB Shilo has been the site of military activity in southwest Manitoba since 1910.
Located 35 kilometres east of Brandon, CFB Shilo is home to First Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA), and Second Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) — both units are part of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (1CMBG). The Base is also home to a component of 3 Canadian Div TC C Coy Shilo, 3 CDSG SS Det Shilo, 1 Dental Unit Det Shilo and 11 CF Health Services Centre, as well as being the “home station” of the Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA). Other supported units include 26 Field Regiment, RCA Brandon’s Reserve Unit and 38 Canadian Brigade Group headquarters, located in Winnipeg. CFB Shilo remains a strategically important training base in Western Canada. The training area is well suited to train the multi-purpose combat forces required to fulfill the mandate of the Department of National Defence (DND). The unique nature of this area has been recognized for more than a century, with nearby Camp Hughes once home to 30,000 troops who trained for deployment to France and Belgium in 1915 and 1916 during the Great War. With a current population of about 1,700 people, the Base has approximately 600 homes, operates its own sewer and water system and provides fire and ambulance services to Base residents and neighbouring communities. The GSH houses a pool, track, full gym, plus a bowling alley and theatre. Nearby Gunner Arena is home to Base hockey, as well as a minor hockey program using the moniker Shilo Sentinels.

We have a lot to offer you!
Everything you need to know about
Winter Home Inspections You may be tempted to forego a home inspection if you’re buying in a competitive market, especially when multiple offers are a possibility. But before you make a decision on whether to include a home inspection in your contractual offer, be aware that different seasons and weather conditions tell different stories about a home’s condition. While some shortcomings of a home will not be as evident under snow coverage, winter also presents an opportunity to see other things that snow can teach us about the condition of a house. For example, a snow-covered roof may hide the overall state of the shingles and underlay, while large spotty patches of melted snow on a roof and dripping icicles are indicators of insulation deficiency. Likewise, snow piled on the outside of a home can show tell-tale signs about the inside of a home,

revealing foundation cracks and basement leakage problems. Every season teaches us something about the condition of a home, but cold weather and snow may prevent a home inspector from accurately evaluating certain features, such as the grade of the land. You’ll want to know if rain and moisture drains away from rather than toward the house. In rural areas, testing the health of a septic system is a task much better left for warmer weather. Also remember that it’s not possible to test the state of an air conditioning system during cold weather. In order to protect yourself from possible future expenses that result from a winter inspection that cannot uncover certain conditions, it’s advisable to speak to a professional about your options.

Letting An important component in every move
is the need to bring closure to your personal matters and relationships in your old community and create attachments in the new one. The list of tasks at both ends of the move varies with each individual and family.
go
The following are specific suggestions and general tips that can help guide you through the process:
Open new bank accounts Transfer funds and anything you have in your safety deposit box. Because many banks are regional, longdistance moves may require choosing a new bank. If possible, open an account in your new community before closing the account at your old bank. Notify others of your new address Notify the Post Office, magazine subscriptions, clubs and groups, etc of your new address. Find new doctors Choosing new health care professionals is one of the most important and personal decisions you’ll make when you move. Interview potential healthcare professionals over the telephone, asking for credentials, specialties and working style. Be sure to ask questions that will give you information about the doctor’s philosophy: how many patients does she/he see each day? Does she/he accept new patients? Does the doctor have time to get to know everyone individually? Transfer prescriptions It doesn’t hurt to have a couple of months’ worth of prescriptions from your doctor, and have them called in to the pharmacy in your new town. This way, you’ll have time to find and get established with a new doctor. Transfer medical records Get copies of doctor’s records and case records and have them forwarded to your new doctor. Transfer insurance Check all of your insurance policies to ensure that coverage will continue in your new area. If not, ask your insurance agent for a recommendation, call the local

On The Move: A Guide to Relocating
Chamber of Commerce, or research companies online. Several companies provide free, no-obligation quotes from hundreds of carriers, both local and national. Transfer memberships Formally resign or transfer memberships from any local organizations, associations, and clubs. Transfer school records Just for safekeeping, ask the school system to make a copy for you to take with you. Raid the icebox About a month before moving, be sure to start using up any frozen goods so that you avoid waste. Also use up, give away, or sell (at your garage sale) any unopened food in your pantry. These items can be bulky and heavy to transport. Return borrowed items Return any lingering library books, rental videos, or items you may have borrowed from friends or neighbours. Check the dry cleaners Check the dry cleaners for anything you still need to collect. Tune up Tune up the car to avoid a breakdown on the way to your new home. Pack a first-aid box for each car This should contain bandages, bug spray, sunburn spray, tissues, and medications you or your family will need along the way.
Fun ways to bring
Closure Round up the family to take a drive around town and visit local spots that hold dear memories. Take snapshots or video and have a picnic. Host your own going away party, and encourage your children to invite their friends. This is a good-bye for everyone, including friends, neighbours, former teachers, and colleagues. Create a “Care Package.” Include some fun food items for the trip. Include make-your-own sandwich items such as peanut butter and jelly. Also include plastic plates, knives, forks, and napkins. Take one last walk through the house together, noting spots you’ll never want to forget. Take a picture of the family in front of the house. Be sure to talk about the picture you will take in front of your new house as soon as you get there. Herd everyone away in one swoop – it’s best not to linger. After all, it’s time to move on. Make plans to visit your old hometown within the first year following your move. Visit friends and drive by your old home, through neighborhoods, and past landmarks. This post-move re-connection with dear friends and fond memories will help your family bring finality to the move. Reprinted from moving.com

Boaters may then enter the Trent-Severn Waterway, which bisects the municipality, and links Lake Ontario with Georgian Bay. The City’s economy is well balanced with a full range of manufacturing industries and a significant commercial sector. 8 Wing/CFB Trenton is a stabilizing factor in the region’s economy as it is the largest employer in the Quinte Region with an annual payroll of more than $110 million, creating a significant economic impact in the local economy.

Insurance adjusters typically insist on sending their preferred restoration company. This creates a situation where the restoration company reports to the insurance company, rather than the homeowners. As a result, emergency mitigation services can be delayed, causing further damage to the home and repairs not being completed to the homeowner’s standards — leaving them with additional work to do that may not be covered by insurance.
“The best solution for homeowners is choosing who works in their home — someone who works for the homeowner and not an insurance company is always in their best interest,” explains Eric Simtob, president of Restoration 1.
This is why it’s important for homeowners to recognize they are free to use a restoration company of their choice and that they are not

tax relief for
first time home buyers
As a first-time home buyer, what would you do with an extra $4,000? As of January 1, 2017, that’s how much the provincial land transfer tax rebate will give back to Ontario’s first-time home buyers. “That extra money could go a long way toward beefing up your down payment, covering closing costs or purchasing appliances for your new home,” advises Ray Ferris, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association. “The government of Ontario deserves credit for helping more young families achieve their dreams of home ownership.” The tax is calculated as a percentage of the property’s purchase price and is paid at closing. If your first home costs
60
less than $368,000, the new rebate exempts you from paying this tax altogether. The rebate was previously $2,000. “What a great way to kick-off the new year for first-time home buyers,” says Ferris. “This tax break will give them the leg up they need to get into the market.” If you’re in the process of purchasing your first home, be sure to ask your Realtor about the provincial land transfer tax rebate and other government programs available to assist first-time buyers.

Bagotville About Bagotville
sur Bagotville
Canadian Forces Base Bagotville, home of 2 and 3 Wing, is one of only two fighter bases in Canada. Located in Quebec’s Saguenay region CFB Bagotville is actively involved in both the social and economic life and is considered a key player in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
The CFB Bagotville population, numbering approximately 2100 Canadian Forces members and civilians, are an integral part of the community and participate in many of its activities. As a result, strong ties have been formed over the years between the base population and the community.
Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is a vast territory of wilderness, visually stunning landscapes featuring large lakes, meandering rivers, towering mountains and a Fjord carved out of a glacial valley. Located in the centre of the province and less than 200 kilometres north of Quebec City, Saguenay features such attractions as the huge Lake Saint-Jean and the Valin Mountains. The captivating Saguenay Fjord, with its sharp cliffs and sloping valley, is scattered with picturesque villages reminiscent of rural France. All this natural beauty creates endless recreational opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. The Saguenay Region is a popular summer retreat area for vacationers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.
The Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region has an enviable industrial structure. Its industries, which are always on the alert for new technology, draw upon skilled manpower and a dynamic industrial environment. First developed for its forest wealth, the Saguenay–LacSaint-Jean economy was transformed by its immense hydro-electrical potential harnessed to operate its large aluminum smelters. Agri-food, a particularly important industry in Lac-Saint-Jean, is represented by dairy and grain production, milk and meat processing, and blueberry growing and processing. Recreation and tourism (tourism, culture, leisure, hunting and fishing) is a fast-growing sector of the economy.

Few homes are immune to flooding and natural disaster, and nearly every home is at risk of basement flooding. From heavy rainfalls to melting snow, sewage back up or an accidental pipe burst, water can enter the home very quickly and without warning. Fortunately, you can help prevent or reduce the chances of this happening. Restoration 1, Canada’s leading restoration company, recommends a few simple steps homeowners should take before disaster strikes to minimize potential damage.
to
A homeowner’s guide
disaster proofing your home
Basic home maintenance. Prevent unnecessary catastrophes with simple upkeep. Start by checking your eavestroughs. Make sure they’re clear of debris so water and ice do not build up and cause ice damming or leaks. Check that all the downspouts are connected and funnel water away from the house. Since every home is different, it’s important to understand how your plumbing and drainage systems work and that they’re in good working condition.
Know what’s in your home insurance policy. After purchasing home insurance, many wrongly believe that they’re covered for any potential disaster as long as their premiums are paid. However, many homeowners don’t understand how much coverage they have or if there’s a limit on how much their policy will pay out. Some policies exclude coverage for basement flooding entirely, and the insurance company has the right to change the claim limits within a policy. If you have questions about your coverage, contact your broker. Know your rights as a homeowner. Homeowners have the right to choose who works in their home. Your insurance company may recommend a contractor to assist you in cleaning and repairing your home. But as a homeowner, it’s beneficial to do a little background research before you agree to hire someone. Who to call first during an emergency. Instead of contacting the insurance company immediately after a flood or fire, homeowners should contact a reputable emergency restoration contractor to evaluate the situation and make recommendations on how to proceed. A reliable independent contractor will help you file a claim with your home insurance company and work on your behalf to return your home to pre-loss condition.

kitchen flooring ideas
Five you’ll love
Courtesy: News Canada
Kitchens are high-traffic rooms that need exceptional flooring. Besides having to look good, successful kitchen floors need to withstand spills, food, sliding chairs, dropped dishes and the occasional mopping. Here are the pros and cons of the five top flooring choices for this important room.
Ceramics, porcelain and stone tiles: Ceramics are a favourite for kitchens because they’re tough, easy to clean, long-wearing, and able to let you enjoy the warmth of in-floor heating. Natural stone tiles are tough and beautiful too, but not all stone resists staining as well as ceramics and porcelain.
cork: This is a dream to walk on because cork offers cushioning action. Commonly available as click together tiles, most cork flooring comes factory finished and ready to install. Think laminate, except softer.
hardwood: A lighter duty choice than others, hardwood will do fine if you install
protective felt disks on chair and table legs. Want a dark floor? You could stain lighter woods to suit, but scratches and wear eventually show through. Instead, make your kitchen floor DIY-repairable using darker woods such as cherry or alder. Apply polymerized tung oil and the floor finish can be repaired without sanding.
Resilient flooring: This is a catch-all term that refers to any of the one piece roll floorings that are cut to fit from wall to wall. Some of the best resilients lay flat on their own with no need to glue them down. Vinyl, linoleum and fibre resilient floors all provide very good water resistance. laminates: Not all laminates are tough enough for kitchens, so consider products with an abrasion class rating of three or higher. Lighter colours hide dirt and footprints much better than darker laminates. When you hire a contractor to install your new kitchen floor, make sure your sales contract specifies the exact product you choose and outlines the warranty provided. Check out the Canadian Home Builder’s Association’s website for free advice on hiring a pro the smart way, www.getitinwriting.ca.

On The Move: A Guide to Relocating
Benefits of using an experienced agent Connections: Real estate agents have connections in the market that benefit buyer and seller. Agents work with many people involved in the real estate transaction process, including mortgage reps, home inspectors and lawyers. If you have a problem or need a service, your agent has the contacts necessary to help you immediately. For example, if you need a home inspection but can’t find anyone to do the job before the agreement deadline, your agent may have inspectors that he/she has a relationship with who will help. Knowledge of Market: Knowledge of the real estate market you’re buying in is invaluable in the home buying or selling process. An agent can give a buyer informed opinions about the home’s future value, the neighborhood amenities and schools and whether the investment is solid. Sellers benefit from an agent’s market knowledge because the agent uses it to market the property to the most interested audience and get the highest price. Proper marketing is crucial. Buyers may be wary of an over-marketed home, while a poorly marketed home may not sell for months. Not selling for months is not an option when you are posted.
Negotiation Edge: Buyers and sellers both negotiate the home price. The buyer is looking to get the house at the lowest price, while the seller wants the highest price possible. Agents apply their experience to the price negotiations without actively interfering by providing advice to their party. Your agent can help you evaluate the pros and cons of each offer or counter offer you receive. An agent helps with the legal paperwork required for offers so your interests remain protected during the negotiations. Legalities: Buying or selling a home involves a lot of paperwork and is a complex process with different deadlines. Since an agent has experience in real estate transactions, she can use her knowledge to ensure the process goes smoothly and nothing important is missed. If you have any questions about the papers you’re signing, your agent will help you and get the answers if she doesn’t know. Education and Training: Anyone practising real estate in Canada must possess a real estate license to legally practice. While the exact licensing process varies by province, professional real estate sales people must have some specific real estate education and have to pass a written exam to get their license. The province of New Brunswick requires that real estate sales people must have continuing education each year to maintain their license.

Greenwood About Greenwood Life at 14 Wing Greenwood is very much about community, as the base and its personnel form the centre of much of the wider business, education, sporting and hobby interest community. While the base’s operations as Canada’s “east coast super wing” – the largest Royal Canadian Air Force base east of Trenton - focused on long range patrol and search and rescue, are at the forefront; family and community life makes this a base with a difference. As the Annapolis Valley’s largest single site employer, the base employs about 2,200 people, between Regular and Reserve force members, civilians and contractors. During the summer, the wing population increases as home to the Atlantic Region Cadet Summer Training program. The economic impact of all this activity, in terms of annual wages, is approximately $100 million. Operations and infrastructure expenditures expand that impact exponentially, in the Valley and throughout Nova Scotia. The 14 Wing Community Centre co-ordinates 26 special interest and sports programs and a library, there is a family lake-side campground, an 18-hole golf course, a large fitness and sports centre with an array of programs, indoor and outdoor pools, curling and hockey rinks, a bowling alley and more. The Military Family Resource Centre offers essential supports for deployed personnel and their families, children’s programs and care arrangements, educational and social programs. The base also has a unique partnership with local health agencies to offer a family medical clinic to 14 Wing dependants. The Greenwood Military Aviation Museum is a landmark facility, detailing the 70-plus year history of Greenwood military history.

On The Move: A Guide to Relocating

Halifax About Halifax
sur Halifax
The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) has a variety of communities in which CAF members and their families can reside, from large cities including Halifax and Dartmouth, to medium and smaller sized communities like Sackville, Eastern Passage, Lake Echo and Waverley.
HRM covers an area of 5,577 square kilometres and offers over 400 kilometres of coastline. More than one-third of Nova Scotia’s population lives in HRM, which offers a wide variety of services for residents, including English and French schools, world-class universities, several excellent hospitals, and numerous shopping centres and unique stores. Halifax was founded in 1749 as the British Garrison and has had a strong military presence for more than 250 years, with Citadel Hill National Historic Site, to York Redoubt, Point Pleasant Park and the Naval Museum of Halifax, located in CFB Halifax. Today, HRM is home to Canada’s East Coast Fleet. Canadian Forces Base Halifax and the surrounding area comprise Air Force, Navy and Army contingents, Reservists and the civilians who make up the entire Defence Team, but most significantly, the Navy’s Atlantic fleet known as Maritime Forces Atlantic. 5th Canadian Division is also situated in Halifax as is the Air Component Coordination Element (Atlantic).
