Unique “Magical Memory Garden” Opens At Palmerston Care Home In East Belfast Palmerston Residential Care Home in East Belfast (9/17 Palmerston Road, Belfast BT4 1QA) has officially opened its “Magical Memory Garden” to support those living with dementia.
P
almerston residents and visitors to the garden can take a magical trip down memory lane. An on-site caravan can be used to recall family “days out” or holidays, while car enthusiasts may prefer to spend time in the car port, which offers the opportunity for “tinkering”, polishing and cleaning the car. The space can also be used for simply sitting in the car and listening to the radio - an experience
everyone can relate to. There is also a large garden shed, which is home to the ‘Men in Sheds’ project, and a dedicated pet’s corner with rabbits and chickens that provides the opportunity to care for animals. Finally, if quiet escape is the preference the Secret Garden provides a serene, secluded space for reflection. Mrs Geraldine Gilpin, Chief Executive of Abbeyfield & Wesley

THE FIRST DIGITAL PROJECT OF ITS KIND ENCOMPASSING THE HEART OF EAST BELFAST HAS BEEN NAMED AS A FINALIST FOR A PRESTIGIOUS UK WIDE AWARD, THE NEXTGEN DIGITAL SKILLS AWARD ----------

East Belfast Digital Project Finalist In Prestigious UK Award The NextGen Digital Challenge Awards celebrate innovation, success and leadership in the UK’s digitally transformed economy dubbed ‘the Oscars’ for the best in next generation digital innovation.
J
onathan McAlpin, Chief Executive of East Belfast Enterprise, said: “We are thrilled that the first augmented reality project of its kind for East Belfast has been named as a finalist for a UK award. “The project came about to redress the multiple challenges young people in East Belfast face arising from segregation, unemployment, low educational achievement, the presence of drugs and alcohol and a lack of positive role models. East Belfast Enterprise and its partners developed the AR Story Project as a way to engage young people from either side of the sectarian divide to
work together and tell their stories through a digital medium.” The ‘AR Story’ Project engaged 22 young people from inner East Belfast to create a tourism product using technology, developing their understanding of self-employment and telling their story of where they live, in an augmented/virtual reality setting. The young people scoped out the potential product, with Augmented Reality 360-degree camera technology to design and develop a suitable product for launch. They learned about cutting edge digital tools; technology to inspire the local young people to engage in their local area and their

ASDA’S ‘HAPPY LITTLE HELPERS’ INITIATIVE IN DUNDONALD STORE Jenny Barnett, who has a four-year-old autistic son, Charlie, knows how difficult it can be trying to complete the weekly shop as a family. So in March this year she designed and created a child friendly shopping list using symbols of groceries such as fruit, vegetables and biscuits.

own personal skills development. Participants familiarised themselves with how to market research, develop stories and create enriched content to ultimately create an AR or 360 degree video product for public distribution that tells one of the numerous stories about living in East Belfast. A partnership of East

harlie and other children visiting the store can use the Velcro-backed symbols to help their parents shop, making it easier for children to ignore distractions and ensure a calmer, stress free shopping trip. The rollout came following an Asda Facebook post about Jenny’s idea, with many other families commenting they’d love to see this in their local store. Following the success of the initiative in Middlesbrough, Asda bosses decided to roll out the Happy Little Helpers initiative to more than 300 stores, much to the delight of Jenny. Asda colleague, Jenny Barnett, 31, said: “I know how hard it is to go into a shop and be a Mum with a child who is throwing a tantrum and throwing themselves on the floor. “By creating the shopping list it takes the pressure away and helps children concentrate on a task which in turn reduces stress. I’m absolutely delighted that the Happy Little Helpers initiative is being rolled out to more than 300 stores, it makes me very proud and if it can help just one Mum, Dad or child then the whole thing will be worth it.” From the 11-17 September, community champions in Asda stores will be holding instore
awareness events featuring information boards for parents on the initiative as well as ‘Happy Little Helper’ packs which are now available for parents who feel they might need some help to get round the store with their children. How the Happy Littler Helpers Shopping List works: The Happy Little Helpers game is designed to get the kids involved with the weekly shop, by encouraging them to find shopping list items and pop them in the trolley. The shopping lists are designed using durable Foamex material and Velcro backed counters. There is also a handy clip so that customers can hang them from their trolley. Though the activity was originally designed for children with autism, the activity is available to all children. Parents select items needed from the products available on the shopping list and add them to the blank white squares. The children find the items in store and add them to the basket. Once the items been added to the basket, the child gets a smiley face next to that product. If the item isn’t available the parent puts in a cross. The Star counter is for a product of the parents / child’s choice.

or people living with dementia it is important to stimulate different senses. They may forget where they are living in time and place, but they can recognise and experience aspects of a garden – the open sky, sounds of the outside environment, and trees blowing in the wind. This is a freedom we can all connect with.” Mrs Gilpin continued: “The Magical Memory Garden’s pathways and areas flow from one to another with no dead ends which would be a barrier for someone with dementia. It is important to recognise that Palmerston is about creating different environments for different people. Everybody is an individual and everybody’s dementia is different. Each of our residents is at a different stage of dementia and needs a different stage of care and assistance. It is important to have a range of activities and solutions for these various stages, so we have a caravan to remember “days out”, a car for the men to polish and sit in, areas for growing vegetables, a farmyard area, and quiet spaces.” Television presenter Sarah Travers, an ambassador for The Alzheimer’s Society, will host the launch event.
The popular broadcaster lost her father, Ian Travers, to an aggressive form of dementia in 2013 when he was aged just 67. Reinforcing the value of such an outdoor space Ms Travers commented: “Research conducted by The Alzheimer’s Society in 2013 showed that only 35% of people living with dementia get outside every week. We all benefit, both psychologically and physically, from having access to an enjoyable outdoor open space and studies show that for people with dementia this can be particularly important. The Magical Memory Garden will not only help to rekindle old memories but will also create new emotional memories. It will provide meaningful experiences and purpose for residents and visitors, as well as helping to sustain relationships and enhance the quality of life for residents, staff and families.” Niamh-Anne McNally from the Alpha Programme said; “The Alpha Programme is now in its tenth year and we have invested over £4.5 million in a range of projects that are designed to enhance the environment and support local community regeneration initiatives. how this funding nurtures a project to completion and transforms it into something that will play an important role for the local community.” Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Nuala McAllister said: “The number of people on the dementia register in Northern Ireland has risen from 9,550 to 13,617 in the last 10 years and as a local authority, we are constantly looking at the evolving needs of our community and working in partnership with others to address these. Palmerston’s Magical Memory Garden is a great example of how a partnership approach can deliver for citizens and their changing needs. Council part-funded this wonderful project through its Local Investment Fund, and I’m delighted that it will be enjoyed by the residents and will be a place where they can
relax and reminisce.” Michelle Hatfield, Director of Corporate Responsibility and Human Resources, George Best Belfast City Airport, added: “Belfast City Airport is delighted to be able to support the Magical Memory Garden at Palmerston Residential Dementia Care Home. Through our Community Fund, we endeavour to support local community groups, schools and charities. Supporting the local community is a key objective of the airport, as is promoting positive environmental initiatives. This garden is a wonderful space for the residents of Palmerston, and the wider community and is a fantastic example of a variety of businesses working together to positively impact the community.”

OLD FURNITURE, CLOTHES, BOOKS, ELECTRICAL ITEMS, BRIC-A-BRAC, JEWELLERY AND UNWANTED GIFTS FROM HOMES IN EAST BELFAST ARE TRANSFORMING LIVES THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY IN INDIA.

FROM EAST BELFAST TO INDIA... WITH LOVE Cash raised for items donated to the Blythswood shop at Woodstock Road in East Belfast is supporting Siloam Youth and Children’s Aid Mission (SYCAM) in providing residential care and education for vulnerable children and young people in Chennai, the largest city in Southern India, and enabling children from low-income families in the locality to attend the Carmel Christian School.
P
astors Emmanuel and Annie Milton who direct the work of SYCAM in their home city of Chennai were in Northern Ireland recently to thank Blythswood and its supporters for twelve years of support and report on the positive impact which Northern Irish donations are having on young lives. Rev Emmanuel Milton said, “When we founded Sycam in 1976 our vision was to support the poorest of the poor through God’s love and kindness and, since then, we have been privileged to act as stand-in parents to children who have been forsaken by society and their own families. Our mission is to encourage, educate and empower them – and we can only do that with the active support of organisations such as Blythswood Care. Half of all Indian children are undernourished; six out of every hundred babies die before their first birthday and half of all children do not complete a basic eight years of schooling. (UNICEF) Harry Latimer, Chief Operating Officer, Blythswood Ireland, says, “In India children whose families live in poverty are particularly badly affected. Poverty forces some mothers into prostitution, leaving their children to fend for themselves, and often it’s those babies and young children who are brought to SYCAM for help. We also provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief in response to global emergencies.
“The sheer scale of need often seems overwhelming but, as Pastors Emmanuel and Annie Milton have shown us during their visit, we can set positive change in motion through simple acts. On behalf of all those who volunteer, donate or shop at our shops in Northern Ireland or who support this longstanding charity in countless ways, I extend a sincere thank you … from Blythswood and from the children whose lives you are transforming.”

Family and friends of football legend George Best presenting Signature Living, the developers of his namesake hotel, with iconic items of memorabilia, in what is intended to be the start of a George Best collection for the new George Best Hotel in Belfast city centre.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF FOOTBALL LEGEND GEORGE BEST HAVE PRESENTED SIGNATURE LIVING, THE DEVELOPERS OF HIS NAMESAKE HOTEL, WITH ICONIC ITEMS OF MEMORABILIA, IN WHAT IS INTENDED TO BE THE START OF A GEORGE BEST COLLECTION FOR THE NEW GEORGE BEST HOTEL IN BELFAST CITY CENTRE.
DEVELOPMENT PLANS UNDERWAY FOR THE GEORGE BEST HOTEL The presentation took place at a launch event at the former Scottish Mutual building, which was attended by the Best family, Lawrence Kenwright, Founder and Chairman of Signature Living and the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Nuala McAllister.
C
ouncillor Nuala McAllister, Lord Mayor of Belfast, said: “This is an exciting development in the city centre not just for the residents of Belfast who remember George Best with pride and affection, but for fans and visitors from across the world who also admired his outstanding football skills.

“The commitment shown by Signature Living to Belfast and the promotion of one of its most iconic sons can only boost the city’s tourist appeal and the economic benefits that result from that. “Belfast City Council is looking to the future with its Belfast Agenda, a community development plan which aims to work with partners including
the private sector to attract more developments which aim to improve the quality of life for everyone in the city so that it is and remains a great place to work, study, visit or set up and grow your business. “ The items included a signed shirt from the day of his funeral, replica European Cups, as well as a silver Northern Ireland cap. Mr Kenwright commented: “This is truly an exciting day for us as we receive these pieces of memorabilia that will form the beginning of a George Best collection at the hotel. “This marks the next step in our journey to bring George and his genius to life within the hotel. At Signature Living, we’re passionate about creating and sharing stories and this is a fabulous way to showcase Belfast’s most famous son. It will be a visual experience that will reflect his footballing prowess and the hero he was to so many people in Northern Ireland, Great Britain and further afield.” Barbara McNarry, Mr Best’s sister, said: “We are delighted that George’s life and career are being honoured in such a stunning building and look forward to seeing it evolve into the George Best hotel.
“The recognition of Georgie in the city centre has a very important meaning to us and fills us with enormous pride. We have every faith in Signature Living’s ability to bring George’s story to life within the hotel.” Mr Kenwright, speaking about his plans for the hotel earlier this year, said: “It’s about unearthing those stories…not so much the main life stories that everyone knows. This is about the stories you don’t know about. Every room and guest space within the hotel will reflect the genius of the man this city and fans around the world love so much.” Mr Kenwright continued: “We’re excited about the next 12 months as we continue to plan, prepare and deliver this new icon of Belfast. We feel we could have the doors open by June 2018. “With record occupancy rates in Belfast of 83.5% last year, we remain confident that Belfast is the perfect location for continued investment from Signature Living.” The Liverpool-born developer has previously said redeveloping the Scottish Mutual building, originally designed by Henry Seaver in the early 1900s, will result in around 80 bedrooms.

ancer Focus NI would love you to hold a pink inspired event during October – breast cancer awareness month - to raise vital funds for pioneering breast cancer research at Queen’s University Belfast. Sign Up now for your Pink Party Pack with a host of pink fundraising ideas. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Northern Ireland - every year 1,300 are diagnosed and 300 lose their lives. As part of the campaign, our charity shop in Ballyhackamore will be decking its window in pink. Shop manager John Grierson said: “Local people have always been very supportive and generous. We know that they will rise to the occasion and help us raise funds, either by buying goods or donating them, and make a hugely valuable contribution towards funding breast cancer research that will change lives in the future.” Rosie Forsythe, Community Fundraising Manager for Cancer Focus NI, said: “We have been
funding research at Queen’s for a number of years and have just launched our new campaign called In Pink. “We’d love everyone to support this important campaign and do something pink to help continue our work into this devastating disease.” She added: “Two hundred pounds will fund half a day’s work by our researchers who could make a huge difference to the future of women who carry the mutated BRCA1 gene, women who have an 85% chance of getting breast cancer in their lifetime. “Even the smallest donation will help our researchers explore better ways to prevent breast cancer and find alternative treatments for high risk women who, at present, have to consider having a mastectomy to drastically cut their chance of cancer. We urgently need you to help by organising or supporting a local Pink Night IN – we can’t do it without you! And whatever you decide to do, we’d love you to spread the word and share and tag us online

MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE HAVE CREATED AN OUTSIZED JIGSAW REPLICATING A MAP OF THE CONNSWATER COMMUNITY GREENWAY TO CELEBRATE THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE EAST BELFAST ATTRACTION.

HUMAN JIGSAW HIGHLIGHTS THE COMMUNITY IN THE CONNSWATER GREENWAY Belfast’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Sonia Copeland, was joined at the ‘Piece Together’ event by the UK Chair of the Big Lottery Fund, Peter Ainsworth, and other stakeholders to celebrate the completion of construction works.
T
he £40 million project - funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the council, the Department for Communities, and the Department for Infrastructure - links the Connswater, Loop and Knock rivers to provide a 9km linear park connecting people and places. It has helped to regenerate the east Belfast area, and provide a superb space for physical and social activities while linking communities from the Castlereagh Hills to Belfast Lough. In addition, £13 million provided by the Department for Infrastructure as part of the East Belfast Flood Alleviation scheme was incorporated into the Community Greenway works. This will help protect 1,700 homes from the risks of flooding, so adding even more to project’s community benefits. Councillor Copeland said: “Connswater Community Greenway is not just an asset to east Belfast it has become a destination stop for visitors too providing as it does a very different view of an industrial city. Seven tourism and heritage trails, 23 new or improved bridges, 5km of restored waterways, Narnia themed public art pieces and the wonderful CS Lewis Square have been created as part of the project. This is in large part thanks to the generosity of the Big Lottery Fund and National Lottery Players as
well as the ratepayers of Belfast. “As part of the Belfast Agenda we want to create a great city and neighbourhood living experience Connswater Community Greenway fulfils those aims. It highlights a large part of the history of this part of Belfast, celebrating as it does famous writers and artistes, as well as memorable places en-route. “It has been a challenge and an opportunity and as we move forward with the Belfast Agenda to improve the quality of life for people living, working or visiting Belfast, we will incorporate many of the lessons learned as the Connswater Community Greenway came into being,” said the Deputy Lord Mayor. “This is a community asset in which the communities themselves had an important input, providing a real sense of ownership which they will continue to enjoy for generations to come. “Who can forget Belfast’s cultural and historical contribution as they pass over the Sam Thompson or James Ellis Bridges, sing along with Van the Man or celebrate Narnia? “I congratulate everyone involved in making a dream by the Eastside Partnership into reality for everyone who lives in, works in or visits Belfast,” added the councillor. I’d like to thank the other funders, local community and National Lottery players as your contribution has helped create this amazing space that is improving people’s lives. This project will truly have a lasting legacy for generations to come.” Community groups and funders each walked separate parts of the Connswater Community Greenway before coming together from all directions under the gaze of Aslan at CS Lewis Square. Many view metal sintering as a long term game changer for manufacturers as this technology is revolutionary in terms of the design flexibility that it offers. The Greenway serves 23 schools and colleges providing safe access and routes for young people and families to walk, cycle, hop, or skate. Along the Greenway 1,105 new trees, 17,434m2 of wildflowers, and 7,267 new shrubs have been planted. The Conn O Neill Bridge – an archaeological focal point and subject of Van Morrison’s ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ was carefully restored. The Connswater Community Greenway logo reflects the meeting of the Connswater, Loop and Knock rivers at the Hollow. Michele Bryans, Acting Manager, Connswater Community Greenway, said: “It is a huge milestone to celebrate the finished works on the Connswater Community Greenway. It is fantastic to see the plans for the Greenway becoming a reality – a lasting legacy for many years to come. We wish to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of the project.”

The substantial value of this investment reflects our confidence in this new technology and demonstrates our commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation in this fast moving industry. “Metal Sintering greatly reduces time and financial costs compared to traditional manufacturing of components. This new innovation removes the constraints of traditional manufacturing allowing our customers freedom to design efficient,
lightweight parts. It offers an ideal solution for the cost effective production of prototypes or final production components, regardless of complexity of design.” Dr Leslie Orr, Director ADS Northern Ireland, said: “The Northern Ireland Partnering for Growth Strategy goal is to double the size of the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space industries. Metal Sintering is amazing, allowing intricate metal parts to be built that were previously impossible using traditional manufacturing methods. These new processes are seen as important contributors to innovation and the future growth of the industry.” www.laserproto.com

This free lecture will be in Drawing Office 1 at 3pm on Tuesday 24th October and will include a short tour of the heritage rooms and artefacts on display. The restoration of the building wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and their Heritage Enterprise Programme, which is designed to help when the cost of repairing an historic building is so high that restoration simply is not commercially viable. The investment from The Heritage Lottery Fund has supported the expert conservation and interpretation of the Drawing Offices and heritage features of the building, ensuring an important level of public access to these areas for years to come. With their support, the project team was able to source additional funding and the restoration of one of Belfast’s most important buildings could finally be completed.

The Truth About Lumps on Dogs
1.
Sometimes lumps are areas of noncancerous fat cell growth (benign lipomas) which are not scary but sometimes warrant removal.
2.
Other lumps are cysts where pores in the skin have become blocked and a build-up of dead cells and tissue accumulate. These are again, non-cancerous but often multiple and uncomfortable.
3.
The third main category of lumps we see are cancerous skin tumours for which prompt diagnosis and removal is usually essential.
By Patrick McKee BVetMed, BSc, MRCVS Ashwood Veterinary Clinic
More than any other pet, dogs are prone to developing lumps in and under their skin.
A
ll three categories are unfortunately very common in dogs. Lumps generally look like, well, lumps and in most cases, it is impossible for any person or vet to properly distinguish between these three types of lump without assessing the cells inside with a (almost painless) needle biopsy. The sad truth is that all too often, concerned pet owners are told to simply “monitor” or “leave alone” lumps on their pets when in fact the recommendation for any lump should be to find out what it is before advising what to do about it. Another common myth is that because a lump has been there for a long time it means it is nothing to worry about. In fact, the length of time a lump has been there or what it feels like is immaterial to whether it is a current danger or not. It is simply not the case that
“if something bad were going to happen it would have happened already”. No matter how long a lump has been there, there is a strong case for finding out what it is and deciding on the best course of action from a position of knowledge. It is simply not possible to tell whether something that feels like a “fatty lump” is a benign lipoma, a mast cell tumour or a liposarcoma without checking. (The first is non serious & common, the second is very serious & common and the third is serious & rare) Of course there are no rules, and some folks don’t want to get information about their pet if there is any chance it could need further attention, and that’s of course fine. But, at the same time, most of our clients want the absolute best recommendation for their pet’s health. At Ashwood,

16 ADVICE
Making a Will is not something that people like to think about and it’s easy to put it to the bottom of your list of things to do. However, it takes less time than you may think to have something so important finalised. Whether you are making your first Will or you are keeping yours up to date with life’s changes Hunt Solicitors are offering Half Price Wills to everyone during October. To get all readers thinking about their own Wills we have answered some of the questions we would get asked on a regular basis.
H
LOOPMAG.NET
October Is Wills Month At Hunt Solicitors Have you made yours?
Q. Do you need to know all of my financial information like bank account numbers and pension policy numbers to make my Will? A. It is not essential to bring with you detailed lists of everything you own in order to make your Will. Your Will can be as specific as you want to make it or we can leave all of your assets in one ‘pot’ known as the Residue which will cover all of the assets you may own at the date of your death. Your finances will be discussed throughout your consultation however in-depth knowledge of each and every account and policy number is not necessary and will not bar you from making your Will. Q. I want someone to have control over my affairs if I ever lost the ability to do it myself, can I do this in my Will? A. By writing a Will you get to choose who will deal with your affairs after your death. This person is known as your Executor and you may select more than one if you wish. These appointments will only come into effect on your death and your chosen Executor has no control over your affairs whilst you are still alive. If
Hunt Solicitors
you wish to appoint someone to control your affairs when you are alive then you will need an Enduring Power of Attorney. This is a relatively straightforward document that we can discuss with you during your appointment. To put this in place we will need to meet with your chosen Attorney or Attorneys as they will need to accept their appointment by signing the document. Q. Do I need to tell anyone what I have put in my Will? A. Your Will is a confidential document and the contents of it do not need to be released to anyone. If you choose to tell people what is in your Will that is a personal decision however you are under no obligation to do so. You may wish to tell close family or your Executor where the original Will is held so they will know who to contact in the event of your death. Indeed you want to be sure whoever you have appointed as Executor is willing to take on the responsibility.
Q. I suffer from visual impairment can I still make a Will? A. Yes a visual impairment is not a bar to making a Will. If we are advised about the particular impairment we will be able to prepare an appropriately worded Will for you. These are just a small sample of queries we are asked on a regular basis and we will discuss any specific queries that you may have during our consultations. All initial consultations are free and we can arrange to visit you at your home if you are unable to travel to our office. food is medicine and that what we eat can promote great healing
PRESERVATION
using preservation methods, you can turn simple ingredients into superfoods
WELCOME TO... T H E C U LT U R E D C L U B The Cultured Club Motivated by an unquestionable belief that food is medicine and that what we eat can promote great healing or cause great harm, in The Cultured Club fermentation advocate Dearbhla Reynolds shows how to turn simple ingredients into superfoods using one of the world’s oldest methods of food preservation. In The Cultured Club, which begins with a brief history of fermentation and a guide to maintaining gut health, you will learn basic fermentation techniques using simple ingredients and discover numerous recipes for sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, condiments, dips, tapenades, breads, nut cheeses and tonics that promise to restore vitality. Learn the simple art of fermentation, enjoy its delicious, vibrant flavours and watch your health flourish. Published by Gill books. Available in Iona Holywood or online at theculturedclub.com

MAKES 1 x 250ml JAR 12 chilli peppers 6 garlic cloves 5cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled 5cm piece of fresh turmeric, peeled 2 tbsp lime juice 1 tsp sea salt pinch of freshly ground black pepper 1 Place the whole peppers and garlic cloves, ginger, turmeric, lime juice and salt and pepper in a food processor. Blend until everything is chopped up quite fine and is nearly a liquidy paste. Place in a clean 250ml jar, making sure you leave 2.5cm of headspace at the top of the jar. 2 Leave it out on the countertop for two to five weeks, stirring occasionally and tasting as you go before unleashing the chilli buzz. This will keep in the fridge for at least six months.
THE CULTURED CLUB SALSA HAS REACHED A LEVEL OF LOCAL FAME SIMPLY BECAUSE IT’S SO DELICIOUS. THIS SALSA IS ALIVE – YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED. TO ME, THE LIVELY TANG OF FERMENTATION SUGGESTS THAT THIS IS WHAT SALSA SHOULD TASTE LIKE. A HUGE ADDED BONUS IS THAT YOUR EFFORTS IN PREPPING ALL THE INGREDIENTS ARE PRESERVED. FOR ALL THE TIMES THAT YOU HAVE BEEN OUTCAST BECAUSE OF YOUR FERMENTING ADDICTION, THE MOST UNCONVINCED FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY THIS ONE!

THERE ARE THOSE WHO CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT THEIR CHILLI FIX. I HAVE MODIFIED MY COOKING SOMEWHAT SINCE HAVING KIDS, SO THE NOTION OF ANYTHING SPICY HAS BEEN RELEGATED TO THE STATUS OF ‘OCCASIONAL CONDIMENT’, AS IT SEEMS THERE ARE ALREADY ENOUGH ENDORPHIN-INDUCING MOMENTS IN MY DAY. CATERING TO ALL PALATES IS EASILY FIXED BY HAVING A BOTTLE OR JAR OF CHILLI SAUCE ON HAND, READY TO USE AS NECESSARY. IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHAT TYPE OF CHILLI TO USE FOR YOUR RECIPE, YOU CAN TEST A CHILLI BY RUBBING A SMALL PIECE OF THE FLESH AGAINST YOUR LIP OR NIBBLING A TINY PIECE OFF THE END. THIS WILL GIVE YOU ENOUGH OF AN INDICATION OF WHERE IT REGISTERS ON THE HEAT SCALE

MAKES 1 X 1-LITRE JAR 8–10 ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped 2 red or green peppers, roughly chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 1–2 garlic cloves, minced juice of 1 lime handful of fresh coriander, chopped 2 tsp fine sea salt (add more if needed) 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper pinch of smoked paprika 1 This is an easy one. Simply mix together all the ingredients in a bowl, then pack into a clean 1-litre jar, making sure you leave 2.5cm of headspace at the top of the jar. 2 Close the lid and allow to ferment for at least three days at room temperature. Salsas have always been one of the more lively ferments and it makes a lot of noise. As the carbon dioxide escapes it brings some of that lovely juice with it, so place the jar on a dish to collect the juice and open it with care (although
personally, I don’t mind being covered in salsa juice). 3 Once it’s ready, transfer to the fridge. It will keep for at least six months once opened.

orn in Belfast in 1977, Stephen grew up learning all about the shipyard from his father who worked there as a ‘plater’ for over 45 years. With this very close local connection to Harland & Wolff, Stephen went about painting the Belfast cranes recently to depict his Belfast pocket square to be reproduced onto 100% pure silk. There will be an initial 4 designs launched online and at Suitor Brothers Fine Clothiers and Custom Tailors, which will be Stephen’s main distributor here in Belfast. The other designs released will be of Holywood, Portballintrae and The Dark Hedges which has recently seen an explosion of tourist activity due to its association with the HBO series Game of Thrones, representing the King’s Road, which has been shot here in recent years. This new venture has future plans to release more styles of pocket squares depicting different cities and tourist attractions around Ireland, the UK and beyond. inding a school where a child can feel happy and secure, rightly comes as a top priority, alongside a knowledge that children will be given opportunities to make progress academically, physically, socially and emotionally. Families also need to consider whether a school’s start and finish times, alongside any provision of childcare, can work with their busy lives. With so many things to consider, the choice is a real challenge. As a growing school in the Castlereagh area, working to support parents and children is central to what we offer at Leadhill. Leadhill parents recognise the value of a primary school setting where every adult knows every child. This personal touch helps to create a safe and nurturing environment where children can flourish.Focus on the teaching of thinking skills, alongside our development of new technologies, helps to develop greater independence and versatility in learning for all children. Leadhill pupils work hard to develop in all areas. Last year, all P7 pupils were successful in transferring to their first choice secondary school. Wrap-around care each day at Leadhill from 8am to 6pm, providing excellent childcare at an affordable price. The Pre-School Playgroup facility provides places for children from the age of 2 years and 10 months up to primary school age. There are still limited spaces available for 2017-18. If you are interested in visiting Leadhill Primary School, why not visit on one of our Open days, held on Tuesday 5 December from 8am to 6pm and Monday 8 January from 10am to 6pm. Drop in at any time on those days to see the school running and talk to staff. For information about a place in our Leadhill or the Pre-school facility or to arrange a visit at a different time, please contact the school office on 028 90401101.

STEFF
our resident fitness guru shares inspiration on reaching your goals
FINDING IT HARD TO REACH YOUR GOALS? Consistency could be your problem!
MAKEUP
your local semi permanent makeup artist has been in business for 5 years
W
e’ve all been there; we’ve eaten nothing but salad and grilled chicken, drank smoothies, tracked our food intake, ran a mile, and if we haven’t achieved the results we set out for immediately then we tend to throw in the towel. Returning to the original pattern that got us to where we were in the first place! It’s a vicious cycle.
It’s hard to understand that loosing weight at a slow and steady pace will be much more beneficial to your body (and to your mind) than going on a crazy fad diet. In actual fact loosing weight fast is not good for your body and it is most definitely not good for the mind, as we tend to end up with a bad relationship towards our grub, and can eventually fall of the wagon, bringing you back to square one. One of my mottos is “everything in moderation”. It’s like the good old saying “one bad meal won’t make you fat, but one healthy meal won’t make you skinny”. Real consistency over time that is the true key to long term weight loss.
As you can see from picture 1 to picture 4 the calories range from 130 calories per slice to 242 calories per slice and that’s just for bread and butter never mind whatever else you choose to top it with!
SO HERE ARE MY TOP TIPS FOR STAYING CONSISTENT: 1: Track your food, either in a diary or with an app e.g. my fitness pal. This also helps you stay accountable for what you are eating. Honesty is the best policy!
2: Find a workout schedule that works for you and that you actually enjoy. If you hate it your not likely to keep it up! 3: Plan and prep your meals, this will help you stay on track and hopefully help you make better choices. Remember to make your meals tasty and varied, so that you don’t get bored of eating the same old thing. All of theses strategies can and will work, but they only work if you keep at them consistently over a period of time. I’m sorry, but there is no quick fix. Consistency is the only thing that will help you change old habits, loose weight, and (most importantly) keep it off long term! Finally, I’d like to ask you to be patient with yourself. Set realistic achievable goals and remember weight loss is never linear. Weight loss is a process filled with many hidden ditches but if you keep going despite all these challenges, you will build and sustain new healthier habits and reap the benefits of your hard work!

e constantly hear that eating bread makes you fat, makes you put on weight or stops you loosing weight. BUT is this really true? A single piece of bread contains around 90 calories, which is the same as most of the “diet” bars out there, so why does it get such a bad rep? I’d say it’s not the bread- it’s what you are putting on it! These pictures show a typical piece of toast with varying amounts of butter, which one would you chose? All of the above can be part of a normal diet without making you “fat”. You just have to be aware of where your calories are coming from, as it’s easy to over eat on calorie dense foods without even noticing.

a q&a on the issues surrounding headaches and your eyes
Is it the bread that’s killing your diet? Or the stuff you are putting on it?
Stefanie McCluskey: Personal trainer, fitness coach, model & blogger. HOW DO WE BREAK THAT CYCLE? HOW CAN WE CREATE NEW HABITS AND STAY CONSISTENT?
OPTICIAN
IS IT BECAUSE I NEED GLASSES? This is one of the primary things we check, as if you need glasses or an update in your prescription, it can lead to a headache. The pain is usually behind the eyes, at the temples or across the forehead. An uncorrected prescription tends to cause habitual squinting and effort. This struggle to see clearly then puts stress on the eyes, which in turn puts tension on the eye muscles, resulting in a headache. Often this will occur after you have been doing something in particular, such as a longer period of reading. IT FEELS LIKE THERE IS SOMETHING BEHIND MY EYES? As well as checking the sight your eyes will be examined to ensure that the blood vessels and nerves supplying the eye are healthy. People may worry that they might have something more serious wrong but are afraid to say. I find if I show people the
photographs that I take of the inside of their eye, it then helps to reassure them that everything looks as I would have expected. IF IT IS NOT MY EYES – WHAT IS IT? Headaches come in various forms, with a range of symptoms and have many causes. These commonly include dehydration, incorrect posture, side effects of medication or even overuse of headache tablets as well as raised blood pressure (signs of which can sometimes be seen in the eyes by the optician). Don’t forget stress, eyestrain from long days on a computer and even lack of sleep will all play a part. At the end of the test your optician might advise you to see your GP or may simply suggest that you drink more water, take breaks from the computer and have some early nights! So, should I go to the optician about headaches? In the absence of any obvious other cause it is definitely worth having your eyes checked. Glasses are not always the answer and you should never feel you are just being sold a pair of spectacles that you don’t really need. A test with an optician, however, will confirm if the eyes are playing a part in your headaches and whether we can help.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO RUN YOUR OWN BEAUTY BUSINESS?
The proper blow-drying technique is gentle on your hair and leaves the hair with plenty of bounce and movement. Above all, it is important to use the right kind of hair dryer. The hair structure may be damaged if you blow-dry hair too long or use the high temperature setting. This can lead to brittle hair with split ends and an irritated scalp. HOW TO BLOW-DRY HAIR THE EASY WAY You always need styling products when blowdrying your hair, weather its to protect the hair or give volume and shine they all help you blow-dry your hair safely and properly. I would always start my blowdries off with a paddle brush (Denman brush, you can purchase these in Boots or any large supermarket , and a round brush (create volume in the hair) a nozzle attachment for your hairdryer and a large hair grip.

STEPS ON HOW TO BLOW-DRY YOUR HAIR! If at all possible, don’t use the high heat settings of your blow-dryer. The air should feel comfortable on the back of your hand. Keep your distance! Blow-dry your hair from at least 8 inches away. using the paddle brush, blowdrying your hair in the opposite direction on where you want it to go , this creates smoothness from the roots area and also volume, do this until hair is 70% dry then section off and blow-dry and
smooth with the round brush. I recommend dividing the hair in several portions and securing the strands with large hair clips or grips. This is the best solution for how to blow-dry your hair. Work your way up blow-drying your hair from the neckline to the crown of your head so that you don’t hit the same strand of hair multiple times. The diffuser attachment of your blow-dryer spreads out a more even air stream. This also prevents exposing individual strands of hair to too much heat. If your hair is fine you should set the air stream to low.. Blow-dry the hair from the roots to the ends. This technique provides smooth cuticle layers, which are the basis for healthy, shiny, and well-protected hair. You should keep the hairdryer moving constantly to avoid applying too much heat in a single spot. Once you are done blowdrying your hair, briefly apply a stream of cool air. This cooling step closes the hair cuticles adding shine and gives your hair more elasticity
HAIR MASKS Hair masks are a saviour to our hair all year round Winter as we know can take an bad effect on your hair, with the wind, rain, snow and cold spells, and also the heated air adds extra stress and damage to our hair. THE PROPER USE OF HAIR CONDITIONING TREATMENTS To get the most benefit out of your hair treatments you need to apply them properly. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week instead of your usual conditioner to effectively protects your hair. if your hair is badly damaged more frequent applications is needed. Using a wide-toothed comb is the best way to evenly distribute hair treatments throughout your still damp hair. Combing the treatment through your hair ensures that every single hair benefits from the treatment. Toward the ends, hair is older, contains less sebum and is therefore more prone to damage, so it is best to first apply the hair treatment to the ends of your hair. wrap the hair in a warm towel and leave for 20 to 30 minutes .
IN SALON TREATMENTS
Smartbond is a perfect treatment for the winter months , SmartBond is a simple two-step process that easily fits into your normal colour service Your stylist will mix the first treatment in to your usual colour or lightener. This helps to protect and strengthen your hair while the colour itself takes effect. the second part of treatment will be at the basin when your colour is being rinsed. You’ll be happy to know that it doesn’t increase the development time at all, and simply works alongside your colour to leave hair in great condition. It also can be used as a stand alone intensive treatment in the salon for those for those clients without colour . (AVAILABLE AT SR HAIRDRESSING ) Loreal professional have masks for every hair type here are my top three: 1. Liss extreme for frizzy course hair. 2. Vitamino colour to protect coloured hair. 3. Absolute repair for damaged hair.

• A garment to decorate : e.g denims or a parka • 1 or more iron - on patches. I bought mine at oddoneout.co.nz on etsy. They are available at any good fabric store. • 1 hot iron...be careful! • 1 tea towel I RECOMMEND FOLLOWING THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS, WHICH ARE: 1. Place patch glue side down onto the garment (I chose the back shoulder) 2. Place teatowel over patch to prevent scorching from iron. 3. Press down hard with iron, checking as you go along, to ensure all the patch and edges are stuck. ** If you want extra staying power, then add a few sewing stitches to secure the patch **

to turn our office into a light, bright and airy space. The clever storage solutions and the height altering desks have made the room so adaptable, and now there is enough floor space to gladly welcome visitors into our office. The whole look now is stylish, professional and sets the right tone for the future, as we enter our 25th anniversary year in 2018.” David Smyth, Chair of the Ulster Youth Orchestra stated; “We are delighted at IKEA’s makeover. The UYO operates on a careful budget and the Board are aware of the severely restricted office space where every square foot counts. As
always the standards of the UYO come first and this act of generosity is much appreciated and will be of great benefit.” Paula added ; “With UYO being a charity we hadn’t felt that we could indulge in the luxury of a new work space. The quality of our services to our young players was and still is the main focus therefore focusing on the office took a back seat. “There are not enough words to express our gratitude to IKEA Belfast. Each morning we take our shoes off at the door and spend a few minutes gazing lovingly at our new office before we even switch on our computers!”

IKEA Strike a Chord W i t h U l s t e r Yo u t h Orchestra Office MAKEOVER
The staff of one of the UK’s leading youth orchestras, Ulster Youth Orchestra (UYO) received a wonderful surprise when they came into their office to discover that their very cramped, dark and narrow office space based on Royal Avenue was transformed into the office of their dreams.
T
he makeover was created and installed in-kind by the team from IKEA Belfast and features extensive BESTA storage from floor to ceiling, in a luxe white finish, sleek grey LÅNGFJÄLL office chairs, state-of-the-art height adjusting BEKANT desks, simplistic white frames for Ulster Youth Orchestra’s performance posters, brand new carpet and fresh white walls. Rachel Trousdale, Marketing Manager, IKEA Belfast commented; “Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people which for us also extends beyond the home environment. We know that people are spending more of their time in the workplace and IKEA has a fantastic range to make their workday just as wonderful as home. We enjoyed collaborating with UYO and the challenge of creating an environment they
wanted to work in every day. We listened to the staff’s need for more storage and floor space as their current furniture filled the entire room. By changing the office layout, replacing the old bulky furniture and adding built-in wall storage, the room gained more natural light and physical space, which instantly created an office fit for productivity and creativity.” The office space was notorious to staff and visitors for its oppressive appearance as it did not reflect the vibrant, creative and professional image of the Ulster Youth Orchestra as Paula Klein, General Manager of Ulster Youth Orchestra commented; Parents and office neighbours used to visit us and their eyes would widen with a mixture of shock and pity at our working conditions and we always felt that it let the image of the orchestra down. It was
difficult to work in such a cramped space as storage was limited and we were unable to open our window without climbing onto a desk, making it unsafe to do such a simple task. We needed to book a different room for meetings, even if it was with one person or we had to meet in a coffee shop. We love what we do, but facilitating everyday tasks in the office was physically difficult.” General Manager Paula Klein and UYO administrator Ruth McCann commented on the unveiling of their office’s new look – “We both screamed with delight when we saw the transformation of the room. We did not believe that it was possible

‘Acquired Resilience’ by Patrick Colhoun
I N V I TAT I O N T O T H E ‘ D E C I D E D LY VERY ODD’ ART EXHIBITION
ARTISANN GALLERY
A solo exhibition of contemporary sculpture and mixed media by Patrick Colhoun. Thursday 5th October to Saturday 28th October 2017 @ Artisann Gallery

ArtisAnn Gallery 70 Bloomfield Avenue, Belfast, BT5 5AE mail@artisann.org www.artisann.org Gallery Opening Hours Tue – Fri: 11am to 6pm Saturday: Noon to 5pm mail@artisann.org
cquired Resilience will be the artist’s third solo exhibition of 2017 and is the natural sequel to ‘What Holds You Together?’ which opened in Ben Oakley Gallery, London, in March of this year. ‘What Holds You Together?’ was borne largely from the artist’s observation that most people need something to help cope with everyday life and function within society. That something could be family, a fetish, religion, alcohol, drugs, the family dog, or something else. For the artist, it turns out to be the making process itself. The process of turning thoughts and feelings into actual tangible objects. ‘Acquired Resilience’ is the artist’s response to that exhibition and the questions that it asked. It is a contemporary sculpture and mixed media exhibition with a twist. This new body of work is based largely around the desire of the artist to return to working with abstract forms. The artist also draws from previous work in terms of the material and methods used for fixing the pieces together. Unconventional material such as hosiery and cable tries remain. Continuing with the more colourful and playful aesthetic theme of his more recent work, Colhoun places his work this time in a refined white walled gallery having previously exhibited in a double width shipping container, a disused bakery and a derelict townhouse. Admission is free. All art is available to buy, and may be collected / delivered after the exhibition ends.
Where you will find puppets posed on sight, still life paintings of fabric, texture, fabuoslee authentic holes , meticulous glances, cheeky tongue in cheek. ‘This future puppet theatre company is a must see exhibition, well thought through offering wonderful ideas to be re-enacted via the public, community arts and their involvement in the making of a Christmas play for this year, next year and the future! The exhibition takes place at ArtCetera Studio (43 Rosemary Street, Belfast, BT1 just off Royal Avenue next to Vincent Vintage Clothes Shop) from 23rd to 28th October and is open every day from 11am to 5pm. All art work is for sale but sorry the actual puppets are not.’
Isabelle Rocks Away From Pain
31
My name is Isabelle, I broke my ankle in February 2006 when I missed the last step on the stairs...
A
nd as a result in the words of the Hospital Consultant “it was a nasty break” I required an operation involving the insertion of a plate and screws through both sides of my leg and my ankle as well as screws through the base of my foot. From that I have always had pain and swelling in my ankle even though I had several physiotherapy sessions. I have tried all types of orthopaedic insoles on the market with little or no improvement. I also had a limp which I was conscious of. Then in February I saw an article in our local paper. I read about the Northern Ireland Foot & Ankle Clinic in Glengormley who had developed a special insole which helps people with ankle injuries. I made an appointment to see Mr Hallowell who assessed my ankle and gave me a sample of the new rocker insole to try out. I immediately felt I was walking normally
for the first time in many years. Mr Hallowell then took a cast of my foot to have a rocker made to suit me. I got the rocker insole about a week later and I have been using it since. It has made an amazing difference to my walking and has greatly reduced my pain. On a recent holiday I was able to walk further than at any time since my injury and was completely pain free. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has foot or ankle problems you will not be disappointed.
initial injury to chronic foot ankle and even knee pain. The limited movement of the ankle puts stress on all the surrounding joints so that often the patient attends the clinic with foot, ankle, knee or even hip pain. The rocker is designed to reduce this stress by re-establishing/mimicking the normal ankle movement. All the patients on our testimonials page have one thing in common, a gritty determination to walk pain free again and Isabelle was a classic example of this.”
FOOT AND ANKLE CLINIC “It was clear from watching Isabelle walk that her ankle movement was very limited and that the limitation was causing her severe pain. These chronic ankle injuries are relatively common and they follow a familiar progressive pattern from an

ALL ABOARD I recall hearing the bus conductor calling out as he collected fares on board trolleybuses in Belfast during my childhood in the early 1960s. The trolleybus gilded silently and comfortably around the town and were a hybrid form of public transport between the electric tram and the modern bus. Electric trams had operated on the streets of Belfast since 1905 and were discontinued in 1953. Trolleybuses operated in West Belfast experimentally from 1938 and the first East Belfast route was to Cregagh in 1941.

uite a crowd boarding the Cregagh trolleybus at Cromac Square, when it was a square, approaching East Bridge Street in 1950. This area has been re-developed in recent years and the road network greatly expanded. The building in the background to the left is the post office and it has since been demolished – as have all the buildings in the view. St George’s Market is just to the right of the bus but notice the square-sets on the road surface and the tramlines.

This is how Cregagh trolleybus terminus looked in 1958. At the far left the wall of Castlereagh Rural District Council Offices looks very new and this part of Cregagh Road has a modern look to it although some square-sets remain on the road surface. The Hillfoot Road in the distance has not yet been widened to form the A55 On a wet day in 1941 trolleybuses dual carriageway and a magnifying were introduced to the Cregagh route. glass will reveal the signage at the At the terminus beside Cregagh front of ‘Speedy’ Graham’s wee shop. Trolleybuses replaced trams on the Ormeau Road route in 1948 and they in turn were replaced by diesel buses in 1958. Notice the old-style gas-lit ‘Keep Left’ signs on the roundabout which were then a fairly recent road traffic management innovation. In this mid-1950s scene of Rosetta roundabout the trolleybus is heading towards the terminus at Fortbreda. In the background is the towering presence of ‘Nazareth House’ at 352 Ormeau Road. It was established by the Sisters of Nazareth in 1876 and originally known as ‘The Convent of the Good Shepherd.’ By 1895 the Belfast Street Directory described Nazareth House as ‘home for the aged, infirm and infantile poor’. The original buildings have since been demolished and a modern development now occupies the site.
Local folklore records the story that during the war years Parliament Buildings at Stormont were painted with a specially formulated dark paint as part of the camouflage ‘blackout’ regulations (above). Unfortunately the man who created the formula died without leaving details behind and there was quite a job getting the supposedly ‘removable’ paint, which was made of bitumen and cow manure, removed after the war was over and the stonework has been left scarred. Consequently the exterior façade has never regained its original white colour. Stormont Parliament Buildings were officially opened by Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) on 16th November 1932. The original plans for a large domed building were scrapped following the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and a smaller
domeless edifice in the Greek classical style fronted in Portland stone, was erected on the site. Looking towards the Comber Road on the right and the Upper Newtownards Road on the left during a winter’s day in 1943 at the time the trolleybus service was introduced. Trolleybuses had just replaced trams on the Dundonald route. The turning circle is at the road junction occupied by Bell’s public house, soon to become the Elk Inn, and this was also the hairpin bend of the Ulster Grand Prix motor race meeting which was last held in 1936. The hillside to the left was the location of a dairy farm owned by the Kirkwood family and known as the ‘Beeches’ until the early 1960s when the new Ulster Hospital was opened.

group of young men and women, who have experienced homelessness, returned from the 8-day Homeless World Cup tournament on Wednesday the 6th of September. Northern Ireland’s men’s squad made history by finishing 12th overall in the competition-NI’s highest finish to date. The team got out of the group stages, and guaranteed a place in the last 16, with a hard one victory over Costa Rica (4-3 to NI) in one of the best games of the tournament. Another win over Ukraine put NI into 12th position-an amazing achievement in a very tough competition. Northern Ireland’s women’s team also made history as they were the first women’s team to represent NI at the Homeless World Cup. With victories over USA and Belgium the squad also qualified into the last
16 of the tournament. Following defeats, by the Republic of Ireland and Norway, NI’s women exceeded all expectations and finished 16th in the competition-a superb result for the first ever women’s squad. This year’s Homeless World Cup took place from the 29th of August to the 5th of September in Oslo. There were 50 countries represented at this year’s competition which has been running for the past 12 years. Brazil were this year’s men’s champions and Mexico won the women’s final. The project is run by Street Soccer NI who use the power of football to transform the lives of people who are homeless. Street Soccer NI provide their players with support in housing, employability, and other areas where they need help and have seen the project

have a huge impact on the lives of the participants. Last year’s men’s team finished 13th in the tournament which was NIs best achievement to date. But the real benefits occurred off the pitch. Of the 9 participants involved 6 now have their own home, 3 got into full time employment, and 2 players completed coaching badges with the IFA and became qualified referees. Street Soccer NI are expecting this year’s project to have the same impact on their players. This year’s teams were supported by: East Belfast Mission, the IFA Foundation, the Housing Executive, Simon Community NI, Belfast City Council, North Belfast
Housing Association, Belfast Community Sports Development Network, and USEL. Squad member, Steven Hawkins, currently lives at Hosford the homelessness service of East Belfast Mission. (the only person to score a header in the tournament) said: ‘this has been the best experience of my life. I will never forget it and I want to thank all the staff and funders who made it possible. I wish I was starting again! Ive seen a change in myself from being part of this team. Its helped me deal with my anger and other issues I face which have had a big negative impact on my life. Today I started looking for work. I
also want to get my own home and complete coaching qualifications. My dream is to become a coach and return to the Homeless World Cup, support the team, and to help other people see the same changes in their lives’. Gerry Armstrong, Street Soccer NI ambassador, said “I am so pleased to be an ambassador for Street Soccer NI. What a great cause to be involved with and a wonderful opportunity to help people representing our country achieve their goals to compete in a World Cup competition, this can give them the confidence, belief and a chance to get jobs, and homes, and to improve their situation in life”.

There is a highly skilled group of players, coaches, volunteers and parents at the Club and I look forward to working with them in shaping a continued successful future for the club.” Club Chairman, Ivan McMinn, said: “As Club Chairman, I am absolutely delighted that Tim has accepted this new and exciting role. Tim has a vast level of cricketing and management experience and this along with his other skill sets will enable us to take CSNI to the next level. This is something which of course will focus on the 1stXI, but primarily on talent development right through the club from our U9s to our senior players. “I have every confidence that this investment will yield benefits over the months and years to come as we recognise and develop the talent within the Club and in so doing to enable our players, irrespective of age, to fulfil their cricketing ambitions and potential. I wish Tim every success in his new position and will be supporting him in any way I can as the role develops.” Club Captain, Graeme McCarter, said: “Tim is a good inclusion into our set up as director of cricket and he really takes the pressure of myself and James Kennedy to organise training and it just lets us focus on our own games! Having Tim clearly shows the club is always looking to improve.” In the Under 11’s; St Johnston were dismissed for 59 with James West, son of club stalwart Regan West, taking St Johnston apart with five wickets for just six runs. Harry Dyer (two wickets) Adam Lecky and Yuv Pahuja were the other wicket takers for CSNI. CSNI knocked the runs of easily in just 7.1 overs with Ryan Hunter smashing 49 not out from just 34 balls, which included 10 boundaries. Club Chairman, Ivan McMinn, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for the club’s younger members and a lot of credit must be given to the youth coaches who have developed the skills foundation for our players. At CSNI we continually strive to develop our home grown players and by winning this trophy it clearly indicates that our longer term plans are beginning to come to fruition. I want to congratulate all the Under 11 players and coaches involved and I look forward to seeing how these talented young players develop further through our winter academy.”
