THE HISTORY OF JBL SOUND. The worldwide authority in audio reproduction for 60 years. Wherever you are, wherever you’re going and everywhere in between, no brand has more ways to engage your senses and entertain your brain than JBL. JBL technology and experience bridge the worlds of consumer and professional sound. Building the equipment that music and movie professionals need and critical listeners demand is rigorous, exacting work, involving lots of math and engineering. But don’t let that take the fun out of it for you. All you have to do is enjoy.

6

1940s

FILM NOIR, BIG BANDS, THE BABY BOOM. James B. Lansing, who led the team that first brought high-quality sound to movie theatres, strikes out on his own, founding James B. Lansing Sound, Incorporated. Among the first products: a highfrequency transducer that audio professionals still use today. What other high-tech product can claim to have survived unchanged for 60 years? The mind boggles.

1950s

ROCK ’N’ ROLL, SCHLOCKY SCI-FI, THE COLD WAR. JBL, Inc., establishes itself as the clear leader in studio and theatre sound. Leo Fender chooses the JBL D130 transducer to amplify his electric guitar. And the pioneering JBL Hartsfield loudspeaker introduces true high fidelity to homes everywhere, signaling listeners to relax and turn up the music.

1960s

CARNABY ST., JAMES BOND, THE SPACE AGE. The now legendary JBL 4320 loudspeaker is the definitive studio monitor of its day. And after a major appearance at Woodstock in 1969 (it was in all the papers), JBL speakers become standard equipment at rock concerts around the world.

1970s

POLYESTER, STAR WARS, DIGITAL WATCHES. Billboard magazine ranks JBL studio monitors number one. And the L100 – a consumer version of the 4320 – brings JBL Pro technology home for the first time. The L100 goes on to become one of the best-selling speakers of the decade and is more fondly remembered today than bell bottoms and platform shoes combined.

1980s

VCRs, PAC-MAN, MUSIC VIDEOS ON TELEVISION. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chooses JBL components to introduce 70mm Dolby® stereo in showcase theatres. And JBL titanium diaphragms and Bi-Radial® horns transform professional studio monitors. At this point in history, can realistic home theatre be far behind?

1990s

E-MAIL, DVDs, ONLINE TRADING. JBL speakers corner the market for THX® theatre installations. JBL near-field studio monitors take the lead in 5.1-channel and 7.1-channel sound mixing and mastering. And JBL Simply Cinema® systems revolutionize home theatre. The hits just keep coming.

2000s

PLASMA TVs, THE IPOD. Clean, powerful sound goes to places where it has never been before. JBL On Time™ and JBL On Tour™ systems join the award-winning line of innovative JBL multimedia products. You’re spending a lot of time with your iPod and other digital devices. Why shouldn’t it be quality time?

TODAY

hybrids, THE iphone, VAMPIRES, E-BOOKS. Leave it to Harman to take the JBL brand back to its roots while still breaking the mold – literally. Its innovative Weave design symbolizes a new direction for the JBL line across categories, with a modern twist to old favourites, as seen on the JBL On Stage® Micro III portable loudspeaker for iPhone and iPod and the Studio 180 tower loudspeaker. A weave of great sound and style.

7

Project Array. See page 21.

The array of JBL home loudspeakers includes systems for struggling students, young couples just starting out and professionals moving up in the world. But that’s not to forget about all the royal families, software billionaires and lottery winners out there. With the professional-grade technologies, materials and engineering that you’d expect from the world’s leading professional audio brand, high-end JBL loudspeakers achieve a level of sonic accuracy that is simply unequaled in systems intended for home use. These speakers aren’t affordable for everyone ... but they definitely give everyone something to aspire to.

8

PROJECT EVEREST DD66000 In terms of its basic configuration, the Project Everest DD66000 is an augmented two-way speaker system, a venerable JBL design. One 380mm (15") woofer crosses over to a large-format compression driver and horn at 700Hz, the midpoint of the low-frequency audio spectrum. A second 380mm woofer reinforces the bass frequencies from below 30Hz to 150Hz, while an ultrahigh-frequency driver operates exclusively in the ethereal realm above 20kHz. The choice of crossover points minimizes the sonic degradation that even a high-quality dividing network can cause. We phase the woofers to achieve uniform directivity across their entire operating range while greatly enhancing performance at the low end. The unparalleled dynamic linearity and harmonic-distortion levels approach those of a fine amplifier. Is there a loudspeaker system in existence that can realistically reproduce the subtlest nuances of any musical source material better than Project Everest DD66000? Project Everest’s exquisite and flawlessly finished enclosure, the work of industrial designer Daniel Ashcraft, is itself an integral system component, playing a key role in overall performance. The elegant curves of the front baffle, which recall the legendary design of JBL Hartsfield and Paragon speakers, form the side walls of a large high-frequency horn, along with top and bottom flares molded of highimpact SonoGlass® material. We join these curved panels, which we create in a proprietary manufacturing process, to flat MDF (medium-density fiberboard) panels with a complex internal bracing system. The dual-woofer baffle is a separately braced six-sided assembly – covered in select, genuine leather – which interlocks into the main enclosure, forming an extremely rigid, vibration-free structure.

PROJECT K2 ® Effortlessly delivering the full bandwidth and dynamics of the newest digital media – without suppression at any listening level – Project K2® speakers reveal subtleties you’ve never before experienced in recorded music. Every detail of the design and construction of these systems – such as the horns, cast in proprietary SonoGlass material, and the resonance-free enclosures – has been directed toward a single goal: uncompromised sonic performance. With its 380mm (15") 1500AL-1 pulp cone woofer, its curved front and rear enclosure, integrated horn lips and a 100mm compression driver, the K2 S9900 represents a significant leap in sound and design. Every attempt has been made to create a system that sounds great, looks stunning and is built to last using modern techniques and the best materials available. This is where the longstanding history of outstanding JBL engineering, both sonic and visual, comes into play: The K2 S9900 delivers a musical experience that few other loudspeakers can match.

18

19

PROJECT ARRAY ™ The first of an innovative generation of high-performance loudspeakers that combine advanced compression drivers and direct-radiation technology, Project Array™ loudspeakers are derived directly from the JBL Professional systems that movie theatres and concert venues now use worldwide. The very thing that makes the design unconventional (the constant-directivity horns) ensures that you’ll hear immense UHF and HF sound, along with classic JBL bass.

LS Series. See page 33.

Lots of people think “classic” is a polite way of saying “old”... and, in some cases, they’re right. But traditional JBL loudspeakers are classics of an entirely different kind. Like the chic roadster and soulful rock ’n’ roll (neither of which has gone out of style), JBL Classic loudspeakers are the real thing. They’ve led the way, kept ahead of the times and inspired a kind of customer loyalty that we can only describe as fierce. Today, JBL Classic speakers can accurately reproduce even the most dynamic high-definition sources with an utter fidelity that will compel you to become lost in your favourite music. They’re definitely not your parents’ loudspeakers (although we’re pretty sure your parents would approve). 28

29

Ti SERIES TL260 Combining extraordinary performance and elegant design, the Ti Series TL260 continues the tradition that the legendary L250Ti established. The TL260 effortlessly reproduces every nuance of your favourite music and movies with clarity and power. Incorporating the latest audio technologies within a breathtakingly stylish enclosure, the TL260 embodies classic JBL sound and exceptional refinement.

30

31

LS SERIES The ls series is a new expression of the most advanced jbl technologies available. Loud, clear, stunningly realistic audio reproduction for public spaces and private homes has been a JBL hallmark for more than 60 years. JBL has achieved this distinction by using the most innovative technologies and materials in both professional and consumer systems, up and down the product line. It’s how flagship products become best-sellers, and how the JBL Pro Sound Comes Home™ ideal becomes a reality. The high-performance JBL LS Series loudspeakers share the design philosophy and signature Bi-Radial®-horn/compression-driver configuration of the widely acclaimed JBL Project K2® and Project Array – as well as of the Project Everest DD66000, the most uncannily lifelike musical instrument ever to bear the JBL name. The system looks elegant as well, due to its streamlined design and its sumptuous black or mahogany surfaces. Considering the lineage of the LS Series, it is only natural that you might expect greatness from LS speakers. Greatness was a design specification, and it’s the very thing these remarkable, new loudspeakers were born to deliver. The ideal home audio system has the raw power to reproduce bass and midrange frequencies without any effort or distortion at any listening level, as well as the finesse to deliver brilliantly clean high- and ultrahigh-frequency sound directly to your ears, undiminished by interaction with walls and furniture.

32

33

LS SERIES

(cont.)

In the high frequencies, LS Series speakers employ a constant-directivity HF compression driver and UHF ring tweeter in a unique, computer-optimized baffle that suppresses phase interference and signal loss. The realism of low-frequency sound is heightened with high-performance, dual pulp-cone woofers in a staggered network design for exceptionally rich bass response. Working together, these technologies ensure that LS Series speakers render out-of-this-world action sequences and delicate, otherworldly musical passages with equal clarity and accuracy. A curved lower baffle presents acoustic interference with the lower woofer while gradually transitioning into the glossy side panels, available in deep black or rich mahogany. Music and movies are made to be enjoyed. JBL has engineered LS Series speakers to ensure that you’ll enjoy them to their fullest, whatever your taste in entertainment may be.

ES Series With the jbl es series, you’ll hear what you’ve been missing. HDTV and the Blu-ray Disc™ format deliver video images that are up to six times sharper than the best the 20th century had to offer. But these extraordinary, new pictures are meant to be experienced with up to 7.1 channels of high-quality sound (which actually improves most people’s perception of the picture itself). With the versatile, affordable ES Series, high-definition video meets high-definition audio, resulting in high-impact home entertainment. The maximum recommended amplifier power rating will ensure proper system headroom to allow for occasional peaks. JBL does not recommend sustained operation at these maximum power levels. The peak dynamic power is measured by recording the highest centre-to-peak voltage measured across the output of a resistive load equal to the minimum impedance of the transducer, using a 50Hz sine wave burst, 3 cycles on, 17 cycles off.

JBL Control NOW ™ AW. See page 55.

… and the ceiling. On the wall. On the floor. In corners. Around corners. JBL engineers have come up with more ways to fill your rooms with great sound than just about anyone else. The unique JBL Control NOW™ speakers fit in more spaces than some homes even have. JBL Control® Series monitors take true studio sound to places where only boom boxes have been before, including outdoors. And SoundPoint® and HTi™ Series in-wall and in-ceiling speakers bring JBL power and realism to built-in whole-house or home theatre systems for both new construction and retrofits. If you can’t decide on the ideal JBL system for you, talk to your friendly, neighborhood custom installers. They’ll know just what to do. 52

JBL Control now ™ and control now aw speakers You can mount single speakers horizontally or vertically on walls, in corners between walls or between walls and ceilings. They can sit horizontally or vertically on a shelf or tabletop. You can mount arrays of two, three or four speakers virtually anywhere, in any environment – on walls, on ceiling poles, even spanning reverse corners – and you can configure them for either single-channel or singlepoint stereo use. With an included floor-stand adapter, they can work with a multitude of optional third-party stands. And everything a JBL Control NOW speaker can do indoors, JBL Control NOW AW speakers can do outdoors.

54

55

JBL Control now ™ and control now aw speakers

(cont.)

he shape of the JBL Control NOW™ speaker makes it perhaps the most flexible speaker ever developed. T Mounting options for single JBL Control NOW speakers and multispeaker arrays are literally too numerous to list in detail. But just to get you thinking in the right direction, here are a few possibilities. Use them in traditional stereo setups, for home theatres or for background and whole-house music systems. Forget the usual technical challenges that come with wiring multiple-speaker systems. JBL Control NOW speakers eliminate impedance restrictions with a wiring adapter that makes configuring multi-unit arrays simple. If your amplifier can drive one JBL Control NOW loudspeaker, it can drive up to four of them. An optional pole-mount kit includes a bracket for hanging a four-speaker array from any standard ceiling-fan pole. We‘ve included a proprietary harness that simplifies both wiring and wire management (and increases sensitivity by 6dB, compared to wiring in series).

56

57

CONTROL 速 SERIES With a compact, two-way design in the JBL professional tradition, Control Series monitors take true studio sound to places where only boom boxes have been before. The Control One Speaker (available in black or silver) is the original versatile and rugged monitor loudspeaker. For music or movies, these speakers cram more than 60 years of JBL expertise into an unobtrusive package. Place JBL Control 2.4G speakers in the bedroom, in the kitchen, in the garage or even on the patio. Add surround speakers to your home theatre system without the trouble and expense of running speaker wires across the room. When you connect the Control 2.4G wireless system to your computer, iPod or other portable media player, your music library is anywhere you want it to be!

58

59

JBL ® On Air WEM-1 The innovative, JBL® On Air WEM-1 system lets you add wireless capability to virtually any speakers and even subwoofers, including the ones you already own. Just connect the 2.4GHz transmitter to your music system and the receiver/amplifier to your speakers. With the power of 50 watts per channel, five preset equalization curves for popular JBL speakers (including the JBL Control NOW™ model) and an included stand and wall-mounting bracket, you’ll enjoy maximum placement flexibility and rich, full-spectrum sound, even in large rooms – without the hassle of wiring.

60

61

SOUNDPOINT ® SERIES The Soundpoint® series brings the best engineering – and many of the most advanced technologies – to in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. Unique housings and rubber mounts dramatically reduce resonances between the speaker and the wall in which it’s installed, so the full sonic clarity of the titanium-laminate tweeters and cones comes through loud and clear.

62

63

HTi ™ SERIES With swivel-mounted tweeters that you can aim at any seat in the room, and power handling that you’d expect only in much larger speakers, the HTi™ Series features in-wall speakers that can bring the most complex and demanding movie soundtracks to life. Now that you know it’s possible, wouldn’t you rather fill your room with sound instead of speakers?
