YOUR SHOULDERS

Three of the leading Danish design and architect schools have joined forces to present, in the DANISH MADE exhibition, a comprehensive range of current and experimental furniture design. The exhibition is also celebrating the 100 year anniversary of two of Denmark’s world-famous furniture designers, Børge Mogensen and Hans J. Wegner. On the basis of three different assignments, the students are now creating an ‘ interpretation of different icons visions, works and methods, which they have transformed so the furniture expresses a contemporary idiom and matches our time – i n the form of new materials, technologies and changes in our lifestyles. The project is a part of Innonet – Lifestyle, Interior and Clothing and is supported by Kvadrat A/S, Expotape, COOP DK and Fritz Hansen. On Your Shoulders What made Danish design from the forties, fifties and sixties so successful? What can we learn from the approach by the Danish designers of that era? We have asked these questions to the furniture design students from the 6th semester at VIA Teko Design & Business, and here they offer their proposals. The process has been short and intense: The assignment was presented to the students February 11 and they had to present their designs March 14. They were teamed up in pairs to define their commom design briefs and to help and support each other. The main themes of the approach are exploiting the properties of the materials, focusing on detail and optimizing methods in industrial production. Based in the past and with present lifestyle in mind we present 14 new designs, which all are promising bids to continue this tradition. Involved in the process were: Christian Flindt - external supervisor Oluf Lund - external supervisor Ole Kongsted Christensen - the workshop VIA Teko Design & Business Gudmundur Ludvik Gretarson - teacher VIA Teko Design & Business Eva Paarmann - teacher VIA Teko Design & Business

TRIO LAMP Louise Mengel

Trio lamp is inspired by the industrialization and the consequent mass-produced furniture. Icons like e.g. Arne Jacobsen were very interested in this development. The frame is made of one bent steel tube, and the lamp head is made of smoked oak. The frame is self-supporting and underlines the properties of the steel. By using LED lighting, it is possible to design a thin lamp head that support modern technology. Designpartner:Monique Consentino

DB 100

Monique Consentino DB 100 is a daybed that is inspired by the industrialization and the opportunities it led to by mass-producing furniture. Especially, icons like Arne Jacobsen were very interested in this development. The use of metal allows the frame to be made in very thin dimensions which gives the daybed a light look. On top there is a thin mattress. Both the handle and the wheels make it easy for one person to move it outside.

WAVE

Britt Rasmussen Wave is a new and playful way of thinking storage. The idea of Wave is to create a piece of furniture that is sculptural and involves the user. The inspiration comes from how Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen took existing materials and used them in different ways; - but instead of plastic and plywood, I have used felt and mixed it with plywood. Wave is a flexible piece of furniture that will change as you use it. It invites the user to create spaces and to reshape Wave Designpartner: Michael Daae Christensen

ECLIPSE

Michael Daae Christensen Eclipse is a felt lamp that invites the user to interact with the product. It has a natural light dimmer that lets you control how much light you want. When turned one way, the different layers of felt will open up and reveal light. When turned the other way it will close and shut off the light. The inspiration comes from classic Danish design, form follows function, and the way Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen took an existing material and used it in a different way. WOOLY

Gróa Ólöf Þorgeirsdóttir In the “Golden Age of Danish Design”, Finn Juhl was often inspired by exotic animals when designing furniture. By following his design approach, Wooly is inspired by the interesting form of the armadillo. Wooly is a lamp made of felted wool and solid wood. It can be used as a hanging lamp, a pendant or a floor lamp. When turned on it allows the structure in the material to flourish and come alive, offering a cozy and charming lighting experience. PI

Carina Maria Mølgaard Nielsen “PI” combines values from functionalism with more expressive and artistically orientated Danish design traditions. The bench has a simple and tactile expression, where functionality is seen in its simple form and function. The expressive element is seen in the leg detail and in the upholstery, which is an aesthetic reflection on one of the frequently used design and decoration elements; – the weaving. NOMAD ROCKER Anker Bak

Even in the smallest space, you need a feeling of homeliness. Nomad Rocker is designed for the small house. It is a foldable rocking chair, you can bring along or just hide away, when you need room for dancing. H.J. Wegner’s way of thinking solid handcraft into his designs has been a great inspiration for my solutions on functions and aesthetics. Nomad Rocker is made in Nordic materials with oak, leather and steel. Home - is where your chair is. Designpartner: Jeannett Højer

NONNO

Jeannett Højer Nonno is a piece of furniture that calms you. It is a combination of my fondness for the hammock and its rocking motion and my interpretation of the “Circle Chair” by H.J. Wegner. This led to a rocking daybed. Contrary to the hammock, Nonno requires no poles or fixtures, and it appears elegant in itself. Nonno means grandfather in Italian and refers to grandpa taking a nap on his rocking daybed. Designpartner: Anker Bak
