OurCampusis growing,butat whatcost?
Weallhavebigdreamsinlife.Dreamsofsuccessfulcareers,dreamsofstardomorendlessriches.Butsometimes,ashardaswetry,somedreams areinevitablyunreachable.
EvenlittleCabrinihasbigdreams.Withanew marketingteammanagingCabrini’scareer,the administration’snewquestistobecomeabig-time university,evenifitmeansleavingthelittlepeople behind.
Frombannersonthebeachtobillboardsonthe WildwoodboardwalktoCabrinisponsoringthe “PhillyFanaticDance,”studentssawCabrini’snew logoandmarketingcampaigninfulleffect.
But,ashardasCabrinitries,wearenoVillanova, PennStateorPenn,despitethesimilarcoatofarms wepawnedoffthem.
Lastfall,Cabriniwelcomed531freshmen,previouslyitslargestfreshmenclassinthehistoryofthe college.Thisyear,Cabriniaccepted2,095freshmen,doublethepopulationofresidentsoncampus. Outofthose2,095acceptees,539newCavaliers enrolled.Four-hundredandseventyareresidents, forcingmanyofourupperclassmentomoveoff campus.ValleyForgeisnowhometoourspill-over ofupperclassman.
AlthoughCabrini’scampuspopulationcontinues tophysicallygrow,diversityisatastandstill. AccordingtotheCollegeBoard.com,89percentof Cabrini’sstudentsareCaucasian.
MoststudentswhocametoCabrinicameforthe feelofasmallschoolandtight-knitcommunity.We lovethefeelingofprofessorsknowingournames andthecrowdoffamiliarfacesinthecafeteria.But thefamiliarfacesarebecomingalittlehazierasan overwhelmingfloodofnewstudentsdrownsthe campus.
Thereareotherinstitutionsstudentscouldhave choseniftheyjustwantedtobeanumber.Cabrini hasalwaysbeenaninstitutionwherestudentscan receivepersonalattention.StudentschooseCabrini tostandoutfromthecrowd,notblendintoone.
It’snolongerjustaboutlosingparkingspots.It’s aboutlosingeverythingthatstudentscameto Cabrinifor.AsCabrini,acceptsmorestudents,the student-to-professorratiorises,forcingCabrinito increaseclasssizesorhiremorepart-timefaculty members.Asthecollegecontinuestogrowwith facilitiestohousestudents,thecampuswillloose itsnaturalbeautythatmakesitsounique.
WeunderstandCabriniisultimatelyatuitiondriveninstitution,withtuitionatanalltimehighof $25,120.Weunderstandthateachnewstudent allowsthecollegetoimprovefacilities.
Nevertheless,itseemsasifCabrini’sadministrationismoreconcernedwithacceptingnewstudents thanvaluingtheircurrentstudents.Only72percent ofstudentsreturnfortheirsophomoreyear,accordingtotheCollegeBoard.com.Losingnearly30percentoffreshmenmakesthecollegeworktwiceas hardtoreplaceandorientthatnumber.
Growingisn’tabadthingbutstiflingourcurrent studentsis.Expensivelogosandanovercrowded campusarenotanyone’sideaofgrowth.Thecollegeplacesmoreemphasisontheirgoalofgrowth innumbersinsteadofcreatingacampuswherestudentsareabletogrow.
Beingarespecteduniversityisfirstpriority,not anoverpriced,overpopulatedone.Biggerdoesn’t alwaysequalbetter.

Tanningsalonscreatecontroversy
EDITORMoreandmorepeopleare strivingtobeastanaspossible. Thisobsession,manybelieve,is thecauseoftheriseinskincancer.Dermatologistaroundthe countryaresteppingupagainst the$5billionayearindoortanningindustry.
Overthepastyearstherehas beenapushfortanningage restrictions.Since2003,19states havepassedlawsrestrictinganyoneundertheageof18from usingtanningbeds.Inthepast yearsuchlawshavebeencreated inNewYorkandNewJersey. Theselawsandrestrictionsare targetedtohelpteenagegirls becausetheyseemtobethe largestpopulationwhousethe tanningsalons.
AccordingtoTheNewYork Times,organizationssuchasThe WorldHealthOrganization,The AmericanMedicalAssociation andTheAmericanAcademyof Dermatologyhavecomparedtanningbedstobeasunhealthyas cigarettes.
NicoleMaziarz,ajunior graphicdesignmajor,hadnever beentoatanningsalon.Maziarz said,“Idositoutsideandtanbut Ihaven’tbeentoatanningsalon becauseIknowthatitisworse foryouthennaturalsun.”
InanstorywritteninTheNew YorkTimes,Dr.JamesM. Spencer,clinicalprofessorofdermatologyattheMt.SinaiSchool ofMedicine,said,“Butwedon’t sellcigarettestominors,and
indoortanningissimilar.We knowitwillcausecancer.Not maybe.Notmight.It’sgoingto causecancer.Nooneunder18 shouldbeallowedtousethose things.”
Melanoma,themostlethal formofskincancer,killsapproximately8,000peopleayearinthe UnitedStates.In2002,the NationalToxicologyProgram statedthatbroadspectrumultravioletrays,eitherfromnatural sunraysorsunlampscausesboth melanomaandotherformsof skincancer.Someresearchers whodonotsupporttheideathat tanningbedsaredirectlylinked toskincancerthinkthattherise inthedetectionofskincancer mayonlybebecausepeopleare moreawareofthepossibilityof skincancer,thereforetheyget morescreenings.
Thetanningindustryclaims that30millionpeoplesafelyuse tanningfacilitieseachyear.They
usethistocombattheallegations madebymanydermatologist. Whilethetanningsalonsinthis countryoutnumberthedermatologist60,000to8,000,dermatologistaretakingastandtogettheir voicesheard.Therearethreereasonswhydermatologiststand firmlyagainstthetanningindustry.Thefirstreasonistherising numberofmelanomacasesthat arebeingdiagnosed.Second, therehasbeenresearchthat showslinksbetweenmelanoma andsunburninginearlyyearsof life.Lastly,tanningsalonsare becomingincreasinglymorepopularamongteenagegirls.

Thehighschoolclassof2006recordedthesharpest dropinSATscoresin31years,adeclinethatthe exam’sowner,theCollegeBoard,saidthatwaspartly duetosomestudentstakingthenewlylengthenedtest onlyonceinsteadoftwice.

Seniorhumanresourcesmanagementmajorandresident adviserforWestResidenceHall KristiMcConnellsaid,“I’mreallyexcitedtobeoneofthefirst RAsinanewbuilding.I’veonly beenafreshmaninthepastso I’mhappytoliveandworkwith mypeersforachange.”
Nowwiththebuildingcompleted,studentscanfinallysee whattheschoolhasbeentryingto accomplishsincethebeginning ofconstructioninMay2005.
Withinthewallsofthenew buildingaresuitesthatroomfour tosixstudentsandalaundry roomandkitchenoneveryfloor. Suitesthatcontainfourresidents haveonebathroomandthosethat containsixstudentshavetwo powderrooms,onefullbathand acommonroom.
McConnellsaid,“Thesetup ofthebuildingwillbealittledifficultformetogettoknowsome ofmyresidents.TwoRAson eachfloorwouldbeidealsothat itcouldbeoneforeachhallway, butIdon’tthinkthereisenough roomforitinthebuilding.”
Withacostofover$9million, WestResidenceHallwasamuchneededfacilityduetheevergrowingnumberofstudents acceptedtoCabrinieachyear. Thereare470incomingfreshman residingoncampusthisfalland withthehelpofmorehousingfor theupperclassmen,thereismore roomfortheincomingstudents.
GeneCastellano,thevicepresidentofmarketingcommunications,saidthattheschoolhas “receivedverypositivefeedback fromstudentswhohavevisited WestResidenceHall…Itcamein onbudgetandontime.”
NewResidenceHallhasofficiallybeenrenamedEast ResidenceHallandthereisalsoa pavedpathconnectingthe ScienceandTechnologybuilding totheCabriniApartment Complex.
Castellanoalsosaid,“There areanumberofcapitalprojects underconsideration,butthese planshavenotyetbeenfinalized. Wewillneedtoprioritizethese plansbutitisclearthatthecollegewouldbenefitgreatlyfroma campuscenter,anexpansionof thelibrary,andanewtheater–to namesome.”

ThePublicSafetydepartment atCabrinipatrolsthecampus24 hoursaday,enforcesrulesand hasmadechangestoassurethat thecampusissafeforstudents, facultyandstaff.Overthepast fewyearstherehavebeen changesmadetomakethecampusmoresecure.Oneofthe aspectsofthePublicSafetysystemthatwasalteredtocreate moresafetywasincreasingthe numberofPublicSafetyofficers thatworkatCabrini.Currently, thereare30fullandpart-time PublicSafetyofficers,aPublic Safetydirector,alieutenantand twosergeantswhomaintainthe safetyoncampus.Thenumberof officersondutydoesvary, dependingonthetimeofdayor campusevent.

Studentswhoarenot21years ofagearenotpermittedtoconsumealcoholicbeveragesnorbe inthepresenceofalcohol. Violationsmayresultinuptoa $200fine,parentalnotification andresidencehallrestriction. Sanctionsvarybyviolation.
Stroudsaidthatthecollege hasbeenlookingintochanging thesanctionsforyearsandthe eventsofthe2005SpringFling wereconsidered.“Thebigissue istheabuseofalcoholthatexists onwithcollegestudentsandwe
needtofindawaytocontrol it,”Stroudsaid.
Possessionofdrugsordrug paraphernaliaisstrictlyprohibitedoncampus.Individuals foundwithmarijuanamay receiveaminimumsanctionof adisciplinarywarningora maximumofsuspension. Otherdrugsmayresultin immediatesuspensionor expulsion.

Thereisalsoaspringbreak serviceimmersiontripofferedto WestVirginia.Studentsspenda weekinapartofWestVirginia participatinginaworkproject whilelearningabouttherealities ofwhatisitliketoliveinoneof thepooreststatesinthenation.
Therearealsoactivitiesto lookforwardtoasupperclassmen.Thereisanimmersiontrip toEcuadortoexperiencelifeina third-worldcountryanda SEARCHretreatthat,according toGorgol,allowsstudentsto explorepersonalrelationships withthemselves,othersandGod.
ChristaAngeloni,coordinator ofvolunteerservices,said,“The WolfingtonCenterisanamazing placebecauseinawayit’skind oflikeCheerswhereeverybody knowsyournameandifthey don’tyoucanbettheywillbythe timeyouleave.It’saplacewhere anyandallstudentscancomefor multiplepurposesorwithnopurposeatall.It’saplacetojust comeandhangout.”

Thedreadedfreshman15 canbeavoidedbyhittingup Cabrini’sgymnasium,the DixonCenter.Aidedbythe varietyofequipmentand activitiesbeingofferedatthe DixonCenter,studentshave theopportunitytoshapeup.
Locatedonthewestsideof campus,theDixonCenter housesagymnasiumwith threefull-lengthbasketball courts,squashcourts,afitness centerandstrengthtraining area,adanceandaerobic room,anindoortrackand lockerrooms.
Alsoifstudentsareinterestedintakingaclassatthe DixonCenterthereareclasses suchasbasketball,tennis, squash,selfdefense,kickboxing,volleyball,CPRandfirst aid,Irishstepdancing,yoga, stressmanagementandmovementforchildren,whichare beingofferedthissemester. Howevertheclassschedules andthecoursesofferedchange eachsemester.
ChristinaSnead,afreshmanelementaryeducation major,said,“It’sgreatthat theyofferdanceclasses.I usedtotakedancesclassesat
homeandIcanstillkeepupwith themattheDixonCenterandget credit.”
Studentscanalsofindout whatfitnessprogramsuitsthem bestbyparticipatinginafitness assessment.Afitnessassessment isofferedtoallstudents,andit helpstoprovidestudentswiththe bestfitnesslevelforthemaccordingtotheirgenderandage.After afitnessassessmentistakenan exerciseprogramcanbecreated tohelpstudentsmeettheirfitness goals.
Severalintramuralandrecreationalactivitiesarebeing offeredatthatDixonCenterthis semester.Kayaking,kickball, dodgeball,ultimatefrisbee,flag football,basketballandsoccer aretheactivitiesthatwillbetakingplaceattheDixonCenter.
Offcampuseventswillbe activitiessuchasrockclimbing, whichwillhavetransportation providedbytheCabrinishuttle, paintballandacanopytour.
OrlinJespersen,directorof intramuralsandrecreation,said, “I’mtryingtoaccommodate everyone.I’mnotopposedto addingmoreprograms.IfstudentsshowinterestinanewprogramIencouragethemtocome seemesowecanstartitup.”
AfterLaborDaythehourswill bechangingattheDixonCenter andstudentscantakeadvantage
ofCabrini’ssportsand recreationcomplexafter, duringthehoursof6a.m. to11p.m.,Mondaythrough Thursday,6a.m.to9p.m. onFriday,9a.m.to5p.m. onSaturdayand11a.m.to 10p.m.onSunday.
Inaddition,theDixon Centerhasaswimming pool,whichalsowillbe changingitshoursofoperationafterLaborDay.The poolwillbeopenbetween thehoursof8a.m.to10 p.m.,Mondaythrough Thursday,8a.m.to9p.m. onFriday,Saturdayfrom 10a.m.to5p.m.and Sunday11a.m.to7a.m.

Withthelistof24clubsranginginvarietyfromthepsychologyclubtothebaseballclubto HabitatforHumanity,thereis surelyanorganizationforevery student.Ifnot,studentsaregiven thelibertytopursuethefounding
ofanewclub.
KrystalLane,ajuniorpsychologymajorandvicepresident ofthepsychologyclub,said, “Onceyougetinvolvedinone organizationyoumeetalltypesof people.Beforeyouknowit,a dominoeffecthasstartedandyou joinotherclubs.Intheprocess youareintroducedtogreatpeople,goodcontactsandotheroncampusorganizations.”
Becausenoteveryoneisinterestedorhasthetimetojoina club,theofficeofstudentactivi-
tiesalsohasseveraleventsor activitiesplannedtocreateentertainmentandenjoymentforthe entirecampuscommunity.For example,therearemovienights, bingonights,andopenmic nights.

TheghostsoftheDorrancefamily,who onceownedthemansionofCabrini,havebeen hauntingstudentsforyearsanditisunknown whethertheyarestilllurkingoncampus.
Overtime,studentshaveclaimedsighting membersofthedeceasedDorrancefamily.The Dorrancefamily,whichstudentshaveseenon campus,enteredtheRadnorareain1920lookingforavacationplaceinthesummer.The propertywassoldtoDr.JohnDorrance,thefatherofthefamilyandalsotheownerofthe CampbellSoupCompany.Dorrance’swife andhisdaughterresidedwithhiminthemansionduringthesummers.Later,Dorrance’s heirsoccupiedtheestateuntil1945whenthe MissionarySistersoftheSacredHeartofJesus purchasedthemansionatanauction.Sincethe collegebegan,therehavebeensightingsofthe ghostsleavingCabrinitobeoneofthetop hauntedcampuses.
LauraGoodfield,asophomoreandbiotechnologymajor,said,“Ithinkit’safabletomake thingsexciting.”
Oneyearago,BrianFairman,ajuniorEnglishandcommunicationmajor,startedgiving ghosttoursunofficially.Hewasinspiredbyhis advisor,Dr.JosephRomano,aphilosophyprofessor,whoshowedavideoontheghostsof Cabrini’scampus.Fairmanalsoenjoyedghost huntingatnightwithhisfriends.
Fairmanexplainedhedoesn’tbelieveinthe ghostsightingsuntilheviewstheghostshimself. Although,Fairmansaidhehasneverhadany encountersofthesightingsoncampushimself, hehasheardofmany.
Fairmansaid,“Onenightlastyeartherewas aghostsightinginWoodcrestandthewhole campuswastalkingaboutit10minutesafterit happened.
Lastyear,severalofthegirlsintheWoodcrestresidencehallsbelievedtheirroomswere haunted.ThegirlsaskedFatherMichaelBielecki,thecampusChaplin,toblesstheirrooms. Bieleckisaidaprayerintheresidencehall,askingforGod’sprotection.Also,Bieleckisprinkledholywaterintheresidencehalltoprovide anexternalblessing Bieleckisaid,“Itwasnotanexorcism.Itwas ablessingofthehallbecausestudentsexpressed theirfears.”

Althoughthemythtoldisfifteen poundsthataregainedamongtheaveragecollegestudents,ithasbeendiscoveredthatstudentsgainanaverage offourpoundsduringthefirst12 weeksoftheirfreshmanyear.After eatingtheextraslicesofpizzaandthe cookies,theweightgainis11times higherthanthetypicalweightgainfor 17-and18-year-oldsaccordingtoResearchersatCornellUniversity.Also, sincestudentsdon’thavetheirparents aroundtobesurethey’regettingthree balancedmeals,almost70percentof studentsgetfewerthantherecom-
mendedfiveservingsoffruitsand vegetableseachdayaccordingto TuftsUniversityresearchers.

RyanJones,asophomorebiology majorattheUniversityofPhiladelphia,saidthathisfirstyearasacollegestudenthespent12hoursaweek gambling.Jonesstartedgambling fouryearsago.Hehasparticipatedin tournamentsthroughoutPhiladelphia, andwonseveralthousandsdollars. AlthoughJonesneverfoundhimself indebtfromgamblingheadmitted thathisgamblingaffectedhisgrades.
AccordingtotheMassachusetts CouncilonCompulsiveGambling,it islogicalthatcollegestudentsareincreasinglyinvolvedinrecreational gambling,eitherlegalorillegal,becausetheyareexposedtogambling advertisementsandallthemedia hype.
NikkiDuggan,asophomoreEnglishandCommunicationmajor,said, “I’mnotreallyintoanytypeofgambling,butI’veheardofothercollege studentsthatareintoit.”
ChristinaSnead,afreshmanelementaryeducationmajor,agreedwith Dugganandsaid,“I’dratherbuya pairofshoesthatIwantthantakethe riskofgamblingandloseallmy money.”
Thevastmajorityofindividuals participateingamblingactivities withoutanyproblem.Nonetheless, accordingtotheMassachusettsCouncilonCompulsiveGambling,
“Teenagershaveaproblemgambling rateof10percentto17percent,arate one-to-threetimeshigherthanthe generalpopulation.”
JacquelineHalbherr,afreshmansocialworkmajor,said,“Icanseemyselfmakingbetsonabasketballgame, butIdon’tthinkitissomethingI wouldbeaddictedto.”
Inaddition,arecentstudybythe AnnenbergPublicPolicyCenter foundthatmonthlycard-gamegamblingamongyoungpeoplewasup20 percentfromtheyearbefore,and57 percentoftheyoungmensurveyed saidtheygambledatleastoncea month.Asmanyashalfamillionstudentscouldbeaddictedtogambling, butschoolsarejustbeginningtorecognizetheseverityoftheproblem.

“Thestreetsaretotallyempty whenthegamesareon,”saidFaulls aboutlifeinSpainduringthecup. “EventhebarswithoutTVswere empty.Overhere,Ithinkthatwhen peoplewatchfootball,it’sjustanexcusetopartywiththeirfriends,but overthere,drinkingisdefinitelysecondary,theyjustlovethesporttoan extremethatI’veneverseenanywhereelse.”

Thewomen’stennisteamonly tookononefreshmanthisseason,elementryeducationmajor,NicolePontious.Sheisnotnervousaboutbeing theonlynewcomertoateamthatisso closelyknittogetherPomtiousremebersthattheteamwarmlywelcomed herandcheersheroneveryday.She hopestoplaywellthisseasonand wantstolearnfromherveteranteamates.

“Lastyearwehadaverystrong team,butweonlyhad16players.Ten ofoursixteengamesweredecidedby onlyonegoal.TheLadyCavswere PACchampionsthreeseasonsago. Aftertwoyearsofdevastatinginjuries,badluckandlossofkeyplayers,wearelookingtocompeteagain fortheconferencechampionship.”

Szymcsakalsosaidthattheteam hasanunmatchedchemistry.Shehas beenimpressedwithhowthefreshmenhaveadjustedtothepracticesand players.
“Ithinkthatwearegoingtodo wellthisyearbecausewehavealot moregirlsthisyearthanlast.Wewill actuallybeabletorestpeoplethat needtoberested.Thechemistrybetweenthegirlsonandoffthefeildis probablysomeofthebestwehave hadsinceIhavebeenplayingsoccer here,”Szymcsakadded.
Cross-countryistakinghuge stridesintheupcomingseason.The teamhasaddedagroupoffreshmen totheranks.Manyhavealready achicvedgreatthingssoearlyinthier athleticcareers.

freshmenwhohavebeenaddedtothe men’steam.
Theteamhasonestronglysought aftergoal:“Todomuchbetterinthe PACchamps,”saidcoachTom O’Hora.
Boththemenandwomeneach havetheirownrivalstobeatthisseason.Marywoodwillbethebiggest challengeforthewomen’ssidewhile themenhopetotakedownMisericordiathisseason.
Oneteamthatisexpectedto achievegreatthingsthisseasonisthe volleyballteam.Theteamisexcited abouttheupcomingseasonandis veryconfidentintheirskills.

Statistically,Cabrini’sfieldshave beeninthebottom10percentofthe PACconference.Itisunderstoodthat Cabrini’sathletescouldnotcontinuallyusetheoldgrassfieldsinaseason 200timeseachyearwhenthegrass canonlytake50timesperyearbefore turningtomud.Inaddition,itisdifficultforanathleticdepartmenttoobtainrecruitswhenthefieldsareworse thantherecruit’shighschoolfields. Asaresultfromthesequagmires,a Sprinturfrevolutionwasinstalledto replacenaturalgrass.
Thetypeofturfusedonthefieldis calledSprinTurf.SprinTurfismaking itshomeatCabriniCollege.AccordingtoSprintuf’swebsite,“Inthe 1970s,thefirstsandinfillturfsystems beganreplacingtheold-style,carpet like“Astroturf”whichwasintroduced totheworldin1966.Bythe1980s, however,theprincipalsofSprinturf hadhelpedtopioneeranewstyleof infill.Movingawayfromall-sandinfill,thecompanybeganmixingrubber withitssandtohelpprovideasafer, softerfield.”
ThewholeSprinturfoperationhas beenestimatedtocostasmidgeover onemilliondollars.Thepresidentof CabrinilandedamajordonationcommitmentfromMrs.andMr.Edieand FitzDixon,criticaldonorsduringthe project.Inaddition,Cabriniwasable toraisemoneytopayforhalfthe priceofthefield.
Thefieldis120yardsby75yards, whichissuitableforofficialNCAA competitionforfieldhockey,lacrosse andsoccer.Theturfisgreentomimic thecolorofnaturalgrassandisfilled withrubbershavingsfromoldtiresas analternativetodirt.Inaddition,facilitieshaveperfectedanexcellent drainagesystemsaidtodrainseveral inchesperhourrelievingthefield fromwaterdamage Asthefieldwasfinishedattheend oftheweekofAug.20,playersand coachesreadythemselvesforanew environmentofplay.
CabriniCollegewomen’slacrosse coachJackieNearywasalacrosse playerincollegeandhadafewthings tosayaboutplayingonaturffield.
“Theturffieldisagreataddition toCabrini.Mostdivisiononeschools haveturffieldsfortheirteams.The fieldallowsforamovecompetitive andfastergameplay.Ithinktheplayersareexcited.”
TheAstroturffieldatCabriniCollegeisamajorenhancementtosports thedepartmentforhomegamesand practices.Massivefieldslightshave alsobeenbuiltforamoreexciting nightgameexperience.
