Commuting to a new lounge BY TYRON DAVIS Staff Writer Rooyman’s Hall is more than just the RAC Grille. It now features the commuters’ lounge that was previously set up in Founder’s Hall before being turned into a graphic design lab. Not living on campus can cause commuters to feel separate from the campus community. Instead of having their own space to spend their time in between classes, they are forced to find a way to use their time without leaving campus. Since commuters are not required to have a meal plan, providing their own food is one option that is available to them. With bringing their own food comes the need for storage and later reheating. The lounge is equipped with a full-sized refrigerator as well as a microwave. As far as a way to pass the time, the commuter lounge features two televisions, a pool table, vending machines for snakes and beverages and couches to relax. While Cabrini provides the lounge as a space for commuters, many of them don’t know that this lounge exists. Amy Guarino, an early child education major, is

a commuter who was oblivious to the fact that Cabrini has a commuter lounge. Guarino said, “I transferred here and this is only my second semester and I didn’t know there was a commuters lounge.” Students who have been here for four years previously used the commuters lounge when it was located in Rooyman’s hall where the RAC is currently stationed, saying that it’s not the same as it was when they first started here. Ernest Ahweza, a senior accounting major, describes his experience with the commuter lounge as the “chill spot” when he was a commuter freshman and sophomore year. “Back when I was a commuter the RAC was a spot where all the commuters would go to chill, play video games, table tennis and pool,” Ahweza said. “Now people don’t see it as a lounge, they see it as a food place with a pool table.” It’s also believed that the commuters lounge in Founder’s was a lot more convenient because that’s where a lot of the classes are held. Inequality vs. racism With everything going on in our world, shouldn’t the conversation be focused on fixing inequalities, instead of using racism as an easy way out? We’re supposed to be a country rich in opportunity and have wealth and freedom. However we still see issues of inequality every day. When did the conversation change from the differences between inequality and equality go to using racism as a scapegoat? Yes, racism is a problem and it should not exist but when the conversation starts switching from equality and start talking about racism, that’s when nothing changes. Racism will never go away if the conversation is all about the minorities and not enough about equality. Racism does exist but instead of teaching, preaching and putting emphasis on racism, we

as a society should be putting emphasis on equality and how to treat others. When racism becomes the center of attention, the problem of inequality is forgotten and so many other problems are ignored. Then the

Ebola: Sept. 19, 2014 On Friday, Sierra Leone’s government ordered everyone in the country to stay inside for three days straight, which suspended commerce, emptied streets and halted the nation in its tracks in an attempt stop the disease from spreading. According to the New York Times, the struggle against Ebola, a matter of life or death, the government mustered police officers, soldiers and nearly 30,000 volunteers to go house to house, hoping to educate the country about the dangers of Ebola and identify people who might pass the disease to those around them.

On early Tuesday, the United States and allies launched airstrikes against Sunni militants in Syria, unleashing a torrent of cruise missiles and precision-guided bombs from the air and sea on the militants’ capital of Raqqa and along the Iraq border.

Climate Change: Sept. 21, 2014 Thousands of people from all over the nation came to the heart of Manhattan where they demonstrated messages of alarm for world leaders set to gather this week at the United Nations for a summit meeting on climate change. According to New York Times, there were “scientists holding an oversize chalkboard to the Hurricane Sandy victims toting life preservers, the march was a self-consciously inclusive affair, with the organizers intent on creating a very big tent, which they hoped would hammer home the relevance of climate change and its effects.”

According to the New York Times, American fighter jets and armed Predator and Reaper drones, flying alongside warplanes from several Arab allies, struck a broad array of targets in territory controlled by the militants, known as the Islamic State. American defense officials said the targets included weapons supplies, depots, barracks and buildings the militants use for command and control. Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from United States Navy ships in the region. “Our goal from the start has been to topple the regime, and then we can fight the Islamic State and the other extremists,” said the commander, who gave only his nickname, Abu Hussein, for fear of retribution from Islamist rebels. “It was Bashar who carried out all the massacres, and started the whole thing.”

More than 138,000 refugees have fled Syria since mid-September

Don’t and harm.” but at the end of the day it’s pointless. believe everything you hear--take it with a frain of salt. Don’t let fear guide you.” CONNOR WHITE, CABRINI MISSION CORPS MINISTER

BY MACKENZIE HARRIS Editor in Chief More than three million Syrians have fled to other countries – one million just within the year. According to the Guardian, more than 190,000 Syrians have lost their lives since the conflict that erupted since March 2011. Class of 2014 alumna, Clare Pressimone worked with refugees last summer at the Nationality Service Center in Philadelphia. Pressimone worked directly with refugees from Iraq, Nepal, Sudan and others from all around the world that were coming to Philadelphia. “Three million is an extremely huge number and it’s not something that they decide easily,” Pressimone said. “They are being forced out of their homes and live these lifestyles that they did not choose and that makes it even more hazardous and stressful to those refugees.” On Tuesday, President Obama ordered the launching of American fighter jets and armed Predator and Reaper drones that flew alongside warplanes from several Arab allies. “It’s pretty terrifying that people have to suffer these repercussions,” Pressimone said. “Now

they are suffering because of these airstrikes.” The airstrikes were launched and fired from the United States Navy ships at the capital of Raqqa and along the Iraq border. “This is something that cannot be ignored. We’re making choices to take out these people, which may be fruitful and beneficial to the people that are being tortured, so that ISIS is stopped from terrorizing the world,” Pressimone said. “However, the people that are displaced, that are not living comfortably are put under more stress because of these airstrikes.” Lebanon has been the top host of the refugees, taking 1.14 million. Turkey falls second with 815,000 refugees and Jordan with 608,000, 40 percent of these refugees lived in sub-standard conditions. “It makes me aware that war and conflict are not blameless in the harm caused to millions of people that are not involved by choice but are impacted to an equal force,” Pressimone said. On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the United Nations refugee agency said that more than 138,000 refugees fled Syria and crossed into southern Turkey since Friday, Sept. 19. “Imagine fleeing persecution

or terrorist situations and you are terrified for your life, not knowing where you are going to end up and filled with uncertainty while being pushed out of a life that you’ve known your whole life,” Pressimone said. “Then you are forced into a situation that you have to adapt to extremely fast and now there are bombs dropping out of the sky putting humongous stress on these refugees.” According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), even though three million Syrians have fled, the violence has also displaced 6.5

million within the country itself, meaning that nearly 50 percent of all Syrians have been forced to flee their homes. “Airstrikes are taking out some resources and there just aren’t enough,” Pressimone said. “It increases the damage of the situation, airstrikes on top of being forced out by ISIS, is just one more thing that they have to fear for, be uncertain of and adapt too.” UNHCR stated that donors have given more than $4 billion. However another $2 billion are needed by the end of the year alone to meet the urgent needs of

the refugees. “I feel helpless. Too often we live in a vacuum, unaware of how detrimental the situation is and it is difficult to react properly and to the fullest extent possible,” Pressimone said. “I also feel empowered by the strength and resilience of the refugees to find ways that I can help and educate others across the globe on how serious the refugee situation is.”

Alpha Delta Gamma receives award

PHOTO SUBMITTED BY JOHN MCMANUS

Alpha Delta Gamma won “Most Improved Chapter Award” this summer at the National Convention. BY RENEE OLIVER Staff Writer Alpha Delta Gamma is currently the only Fraternity at Cabrini. This past summer the chapter received the “Most Improved Chapter” award at the National Convention, which took place in Fort Lauderdale, FL. It was the first national convention that the Cabrini chapter has ever attended. Student President John McManus said that this past year was the best year that the chapter has had thus far. “Every aspect of the fraternity we improved on, we got 100 percent better,” McManus said. He and two other members attended the convention. The chapter started at Cabrini in 2007 and has been going strong ever since. It is dedicated to service, scholastics, socials, school spirit and spirituality through brotherhood. “Without this fraternity I would not be at Cabrini still,” McManus said. “The group of guys we have are great.” McManus loves the brotherhood aspect that a fraternity like Alpha Delta Gamma has to offer. “I came from a giant brotherhood in high school where we did everything together,” McManus said. “I just wanted to keep this going even after high school. I felt like I could really continue the brotherhood aspect in a different way with my college career.” McManus ran for and was

elected president of the chapter last spring. He enjoys the leadership role and hopes that even after he graduates, that the legacy will continue. The fraternity’s main future goal is to win chapter of the year at the national convention. “We really hope to be in the running for that this upcoming year,” McManus said. Alpha Delta Gamma has several events planned for the upcoming year. They will be working with Habitat for Humanity for their national day of service on Oct. 10. All the chapters around the country will take part in this event as well. On Oct. 18 they will be attending the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and on Oct. 24 they will participate in the AIDS Walk as well. The chapter also plans to volunteer at a soup kitchen in West Philadelphia during Thanksgiving to help feed those in need. Alpha Delta Gamma will also be hosting the national convention this upcoming February right here on Cabrini’s campus. From Feb. 21 to 24 all members from all around the country will travel to Radnor to attend various workshops and leadership symposiums. President McManus says he will also be speaking at the convention.

Delta Xi Phi wins ‘Sorority of the Year’ BY JESSICA PARADYSZ Perspectives Editor Delta Xi Phi won chapter of the year during a conference in Baltimore this July. President Veronica Smith, senior biology major, was sitting with her fellow sorority sisters at a banquet at the end of the conference, listening to the awards joking around that they could keep eating as they would not win. Smith heard the words of a paper that she submitted over the summer that she poured her heart into. “I wanted to paint a perfect picture of how I feel about our sisters,” Smith said. “I wanted the national board to know how amazing our sisters are.” The Cabrini chapter was not expecting to win and Smith’s essay summing up the previous years with her sisters focused on how everyone benefited and grew during the year. “It is not to say we had a perfect year,” Smith said. “We are far from perfect but we want to be an example for those who want to exemplify and improve what the organization stands for.” Fellow chapters include Ohio State and John’s Hopkins University that “We communicate and look up to,” Smith said. Although the sisters are from schools across the country, Smith insists that all members are “Cultured, intelligent and interested in exploring the world.” During the convention, members attended various workshops including fundraising, social identity, social justice and transitioning to a young professional. The sorority is dedicated to benefiting cancer research. Every October, the sorority walks in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides for Breast Cancer and

participates in Cabrini’s Relay for Life in the spring. In addition, the members assist in the local humane society drive, AIDS Walk, and the Alex’s Lemonade Stand and run. “Community service does not feel like work,” Smith adds. Throughout the year Delta Xi Phi holds bake sales in Founder’s lobby. 50-100 percent of the proceeds are directly donated to the American Cancer Society. Smith explains that all members must pay dues which cover the cost of membership and activities. Therefore any extra money raised is an opportunity to give back to their philanthropy. If it was not for a friend dragging Smith along to welcome week activities, she would not have had the incredible opportunities and memories that come along with being a member of the sorority. “The girls were so easy to talk to; interesting and confident,” Smith said. “I wanted to be that confident, fun and a nice leader.” Instead of having a clear vision of joining the sorority, Smith “never thought about Greek life,” Smith is ecstatic that she was able to join as she was able to “foster leadership skills” and find some of her best friends. She continues to strive for the fun and welcoming atmosphere that drew her to Delta Xi Phi. “They treated me like I knew them forever, we take care of each other,” Smith said. Sorority life is depicted in movies and television shows, yet these sisters do not live in a house on campus. Still, members can live together on campus, “have family dinners and go to dances together.” Supporting other clubs and activities is important to the sorority to make campus life thrive.

@RENEEOLIVER4423

Last year, Delta Xi Phi supported the National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and Be(you) tiful fashion show with Active Minds and the Body Image Coalition (BIC). Sorority members “have different majors and are involved in clubs including CAP board and Student Government which broadens the college experience.” The sorority is able to grow from guidance of its adviser, alumnae base, fellow sororities and the national board. Delta Xi Phi’s new adviser, Colleen Poole is joining for this year. “We are very excited, so happy to work with her,” Smith said. As the external VP of alumni liaisons, Smith is able to keep members involved with what is happening on campus and charitable events. Equally as excited is Ms. Poole, field experience coordinator and education professor. “I was thrilled to be asked to be the Faculty Advisor for Delta Xi Phi. I have seen all of the service projects that the sorority participates in and feel that they are great role models on campus,” Poole said. “Their enthusiasm at events is contagious. When you see the group all together you know that there is something special about the bond they share. I am looking forward to working with these wonderful young women.” A new year is exciting, and Smith encourages students to enjoy welcome week activities and consider joining. At the same time, she hopes that students are “joining for the right reasons; they are involved in the community, care a lot about Cabrini, support friends and are willing to spend time working for a cause.” @JESSICAPARADYSZ

Shake it off: women in music firing back against stereotypes

BY LILLIAN HURLEY Staff Writer

Unlike most of her previous songs, this one isn’t about the “Teardrops on Her Guitar” because some guy left her heartbroken. It is actually the opposite. “Shake It Off,” the new song by Taylor Swift, is showing a different side of the singer. The message of the song is all about self-empowerment and not listening to what the “haters” say. One of the lines that best show her newfound admiration for not caring about how others perceive her is, “I go on too many dates, but I can’t make ’em stay, at least that is what people say.” This line describes how Swift is often scrutinized by the media for dating what they claim is “too many” guys. With this new song, Swift is showing the world that she doesn’t care about what society thinks is normal and she isn’t the only female artist who is doing this. Today it seems that more and more female artists are singing songs that promote a new way of life for women. Each popular genre of music currently has a strong female presence. Country music has Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert. One of Lambert’s songs titled “Mama’s

Broken Heart” is an example of how women’s roles in relationships have changed. In a line of the song Lambert talks about how her mother taught her to always act like a lady and when dealing with a breakup to never seem “crazy” in front of a man. A line right from the song about how her mother felt regarding acting towards men is, “Don’t matter how you feel, it only matters how you look,” but Lambert later challenges her mother’s views. Further into the song a line is sung which is really prevalent to how women

Swift performing in her latest video, “Shake it Off.” The country “sweetheart” dances to many different styles in the clip. today have changed; she says, “My mama came from a softer generation.Where you get a grip and bite your lip just to save a little face.” In the pop and rap genre, female artists are also using their songs to promote inspiration. Meghan Trainor’s song “All About that Bass” is about the importance of positive body image. Beyoncé often mentions her feminist beliefs in her music. Nicki Minaj is not only a very successful rapper in a male dominated industry but a force to be reckoned with. From female artists like Lorde to Iggy Azalea, the music

industry is always being introduced to new music. But are the powerful messages of the music from these female artists matching their image? When Jennifer Lopez hits the stage in a one piece body glitter suit how is she being perceived? On the red carpet when Rihanna is wearing a form-fitting dress how is she criticized? Are these women giving society ammunition to objectify their bodies, or are they showing their bodies as nothing to be ashamed of? Is it really something they should hide, like in past generations? Regardless of how people perceive the songs and images of the female artists of today, they are definitely helping to change the roles of women in society. Songs promoting the progression of how women are viewed and view themselves are helping to eliminate the old stereotypes that they have passed faced in years past. The images that female artists are portraying today do not match up with the normal gender roles of mothers and caretakers. Instead, they are showing more powerful, strong women who are embracing their sexuality instead of hiding it in the linen closet while doing their house chores. @LILLIANMHURLEY

Chelsea Handler joins the Netflix bandwagon Chuy? Handler would not hold back in her interviews, creating a much more genuine and funny atmosphere. Following in the sparklingly unapologetic path blazed by Joan Rivers, Handler became a comedic star on the same network where Rivers worked until her unfortunate death. Comedians entertain vast crowds and seem to be at ease on screen. However, it is BY JESSICA PARADYSZ Perspectives Editor

Chelsea Handler, the brazenly funny blonde girl from Jersey, became a hit with fellow comediennes, guest stars and viewers alike. Handler headlined her own show on the E! Network for seven years. She is unapologetic and would playfully bash her own network. She never took herself too seriously, even though she is a business and comedic powerhouse. Handler has best-selling books under her belt, including “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands,” “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” and “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang.” Handler decided to leave her long-running show on the entertainment network for a completely new platform beloved by college students, Netflix. She will host a talk show on the popular movie and television streaming platform. Netlfix is known for its compelling original series and Handler will have much more artistic control in this new phase of her career. Her show, “Chelsea Lately,” began with a roundtable discussion with comedians and turned to an interview segment with celebrities. Who can forget her assistant

Handler interviewing Jennifer Lopez. hard to make it in Hollywood, especially for women comedians. Handler is a dynamo in her own right, but it is interesting to point out the similarities and legacy of the late Joan Rivers. Both may come across as crass, but are passionate and caring stars. The success of Netflix original series and buzz in pop culture only adds to the anticipation of Handler’s debut. Handler is witty and smart and seems to have outgrown her nightly E! Show and is ready to take more risks. Although I will miss tuning into her show, E! news is a guilty pleasure, I believe that her new program has the potential to reach even more viewers, especially those with negative views of the previous network.

It is empowering to see a confident woman saying what she wants on TV. No matter what people may think, she is an accomplished writer and television personality. Handler has come a long way from her beginnings in Livingston, N.J. She has toured all over to promote her books. Handler will be whisked away to Australia and New Zealand for her live comedy show, “Uganda Be Kidding Me,” performing in grand places such as the Sydney Opera House. Viewers will need to wait until 2016 to hear Handler’s comedy on Netflix, as she is currently finishing up her book tour and working on filming segments. This move could be the future for television stars looking to stay relevant in the competitive industry. Netflix has renewed original series including “Orange is the New Black” and “House of Cards.” The women of “Orange is the New Black” swept the Emmy awards and are breaking down barriers. In addition, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright star in the acclaimed political drama “House of Cards.” Upcoming original series in line for this year include “Daredevil” staring Deborah Ann Woll of “True Blood” and Rosario Dawson of “Rent.” After a long week of classes, students love to unwind and watch their favorite shows on Netflix. Actors are realizing the potential of the platform and artistic freedom it presents. The shift will be a positive one for Handler’s career. I cannot wait to sit back and watch the comedy that I grew up watching on E!, only a little edgier. @JESSICAPARADYSZ

What is the iPhone 6 about —is it worth the purchase? have the newest device with the best features, but because I broke the phone and could not survive long without it. I join a large number of people who have become dependent on using smart-

BY SAMANTHA JACOBS Staff Writer

If you love your iPhone but wish it was just a little bit thinner to slide into your pocket better or that the screen size was larger to make it a little easier to read, then you’re in luck. Apple has recently announced that it will be releasing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus this year. Both are thinner and have larger screens than the previously released iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6 will feature a 4.7 inch screen with 1334 x 720 Retina LCD resolution while the iPhone 6 plus features a 5.5 inch screen with 1920 x 1080 Retina LCD resolution compared to the 4 inch screen with 1136 x 640 IPS resolution that the 5s uses. Other improvements include making the phone thinner, upgrading the camera and video capabilities, a faster processor, better battery life and the introduction of Apple Pay. Apple Pay will allow users to use the fingerprint scanning introduced in the iPhone 5s to pay with a credit card from your phone instead of the physical card. Last year I upgraded my iPhone 4s to the iPhone 5s, not because of a desire to

love, and the larger screen definitely has made it much easier to perform tasks on the phone. While all of the upgrades for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are fantastic and make the device even more helpful, the phones start at $199 and just last year users upgraded to the 5c and 5s. Buying a new phone every year to keep up-to-date with the latest technology adds up quick. The worst part is that many of the features that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus offer were demanded by Apple users before the iPhone 5 was released. I still am not convinced that upgrading to the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus is the right move for me. For one, there is nothing wrong with my iPhone 5s and it functions exactly the way it should. Second, with the way that Apple releases new phones, there will likely be a new iPhone to look forward to by the time my phone does stop working.

Politicians need to change their ways for new generation Politicians have a significant role of shaping history, past and present. They are seen as sophisticated, ruthless, powerful as well as conniving and difficult to trust. History books and the media have captured the world of politics. What changes our views and why are politics so alluring? Are the current generation’s views much different and more accepting than those of the past? Social media plays a huge role in politics for the younger members of society. Politicians are aware of the difference in views among generations. Today, politicians are now using social media as ways to attract the younger people and get them

At what age do you start to form your political identity? Politics is known to be such a touchy subject when discussing your views to someone with different views. Politics can be a sensitive subject for some people because everyone has their own views and beliefs. With our generation today, social media has become a very important factor in our lives. Young people gravitate more towards their social network accounts rather than keeping up with current events. If you were to ask someone from this generation their view on a political topic, they might not be fully aware of the issue. For example, the views of gay marriage vary among ages. Young people today are more accepting of the issue due to the broadcasting and televised aspect of it.

Sexual assaults on campuses BY BRIANA MORRELL Staff Writer

When sexual assault happens on a campus it is an unfortunate event for the victim. For Emma Sulkowicz, a visual art major at Columbia Universtiy in New York, it is just the same. Sulkowicz was raped along with two other women the same night, and Emma was raped in her own dorm bed. Today, she is working on a senior project at Columbia College where she will be carrying her mattress wherever she goes each day until she does not go to the same school as the offender. She says that the duration of her carrying her mattress can vary to a day or until she graduates in 2015. Emma Sulkowicz carries her mattress to represent the weight holding her down after she was sexually assaulted. She has started a movement where people have also been carrying mattresses to "carry the weight" of being sexually assaulted. Sulkowicz says that the mattress is not too heavy to carry around and function in her daily

life activities, but it is heavy enough to prove a point and get a message across about sexual assault. When dealing with sexual assault in a university like Emma, each university and college has different ways and procedures to handle the situation. Cabrini has their own set of procedures in place so that justice for the victim is reached. If a victim wishes to report a crime of sexual assault on campus they have many places to go to start and just looking in the back of the bathroom doors can give students this information. A victim can reach out to public safety or residence life to report asexual assault if and when they feel comfortable in doing so, but in cases where they need emergency help they can contact the police by calling 911. Dean of Students George Stroud said, "Cabrini College takes the issue of sexual violence very seriously and seeks to foster and maintain a community of mutual respect and concern for all of its members. Stroud also said that Cabrini has revised the policy on Sexual Misconduct and Harassment and that 170 faculty and

administrators around Delaware county attended "The Policy Institute" seminar that Cabrini College hosted. When a sexual assault happens on Cabrini's campus and is reported to Residence Life, actions are taken such as a hearing for both the victim and offender to come to a conclusion where the victim reaches justice and the offender is punished. When all of these issues are settled the victim can be in peace and hopefully move on from this tragic incident. @BRIANNAMORRELL

New strides on the runway BY LILLIAN HURLEY Staff Writer

At the age of 28, Karen Crespo became infected with bacterial meningitis, which left her as a quadruple amputee. Crespo never expected that this life threatening infection would be the reason why she would be walking the runway at New York Fashion Week. Now a 31-year-old Crespo is an inspiration to diversity in the fashion world and women everywhere, all with the help of fashion designer Carrier Hammer. Hammer, a former business woman, designs clothes for real women in the business world. The models used in her fashion show properly represent the actual women who will be wearing her clothes. On the runway Hammer even uses some of her actual clients. During a fashion show last February, Hammer continued to diversify her runway models by featuring Danielle Sheypuk, who is wheelchair bound. According to her interview with TODAY.com, when Crespo saw Sheypuk on the runway she knew she wanted to get on the runway, to help inspire others with a disability. She contacted Hammer, thanking her for being aware of disabilities. Hammer then

asked Crespo to be one of her models for New York Fashion week. The fashion world rarely diversifies the image of the model used in fashion shows and Hammer is using the runway to change the ideal of a fashion model. After walking on a New York Fashion Week runway, Crespo is now the first quadruple amputee to walk the runway. Not only is Hammer and her models are raising awareness for these disabilities they are also helping to change the fashion world. During an interview with TODAY.com “Beauty lies in our differences. There isn’t one slim ideal beauty, but that’s what fashion has become all about.” Hammer said. Since walking the runway, Crespo has a newfound love of her body and the her own traits that set her apart from the world.

“As Above So Below" goes beyond expectations BY DOMINIQUE DINARDO Staff Writer

"As Above So Below" went above any stereotype for a horror movie. In many scary movies, audiences can usually predict the ending before it even begins. Starting with an unrelated opening sequence, followed by terrible acting and finished with a string of deaths according to Darwinism, scary movies usually tend to fit the same mold. However, "As Above So Below" changed the pace. This film was about the catacombs of Paris and the spirits of those who are left beneath the French streets. While this movie wasn't entirely coveryour-eyes-scary, it did let your mind wander. Sometimes, considering the reality of these intense situations is the scariest of all. "As Above So Below" released on August 29, was a movie that motivated you to think and taught you ancient history in the process. The main character in this story, Scarlett, played by actress Perdita Weeks, was highly interested in alchemy. She was fascinated by the history of mythology and the tales no one ever lived to tell.

Scarlett's motive was to come in contact with the Philosopher's Stone, a stone that was thought to heal all wounds. Throughout the movie, she and her team made up of a camera man, a life long friend and three Parisians familiar with the catacombs made their way through the twirling tunnels beneath France. Without giving away too much of the story, the crew finds themselves winding through the depths and facing not only many physical set backs, but also a distorted mentality. Their resources fall short due to situations beyond their control. Will they ever make it out, or will they be stuck thousands of feet beneath the earth's surface with no one but the tortured souls left haunting there? This movie is considered a low-budget film, as it was shot from a personal perspective with handheld cameras. For costing so little to make it exceeded expectations for horror films by giving a solid plot and flawless acting. Although I really enjoyed it, this movie's current gross sales is at $10.7 million compared to the highest grossing scary movie of all time. The Sixth Sense" coming in at a whopping $293.5 million.

"As Above So Below" was an impressive thriller that is perfect for the fall and spooky season.

Emma Watson shines as an advocate for equality BY JESSICA PARADYSZ Perspectives Editor

As children, many were whisked away by the whimsical story and magic of the Harry Potter movies and books. Girls looked up to the witty Hermione Granger, played by British actress Emma Watson. Watson attended Brown University, majoring in English literature and recently became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. The 24-year-old Brown graduate was poised beyond her years on Sunday, Sept. 21, speaking at the UN Headquarters in New York. Watson directed a speech on an issue that is vital to young women everywhere: equality. However, her plea is an important perspective. Equality is everyone’s issue. Especially regarding domestic abuse and other controversial issues, many times people relegate the issue to a certain group. Yet, isolating the issue to one group is impeding any hopes for change. In fact, this dangerous mindset causes the reverse effect. Looking like an elegant movie star, the British actress of Harry Potter fame proved to be a passionate ambassador and role model for college students everywhere. Advocating for the “He for She” Campaign, the fueling idea is that both men and women must rally for gender equality. The UN has seen various campaigns through the years, yet this unique campaign is setting a blazing precedent. “We want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change. And we don’t just want to talk

about it. We want to make sure that it’s tangible,” Watson said. As a UN ambassador for women, Watson also reinforced that women’s rights has often been wrongly ensnarled to the idea of man-hating. The “Perks of Being a Wallflower” star recounts how as a girl growing up she was a victim of gender inequality. She and her friends were labeled as bossy for being assertive and immediately sexualized as teens. Both gender stereotypes inhibit individuals from being free and realizing their potential. Feminism is not about combating injustices against women, but against men as well. Changing the conversation about equality towards a positive concept for everyone to attain will create a much better world. Amidst the media hailstorm of domestic violence and over-sexualization of women, this campaign is relevant and dynamic. Watson has an wide fan n=base an is able to impact many people who grew up watching her movies. Her engagement in the campaign has great potential to revive the effort and the UN. Watson exuded confidence in both her words and style. The star was humbling and shared that many may be wondering why the movie star was addressing prominent members of the UN. I've been asking myself the same thing,”Watson stated. “All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make it better.”

Adjusting to norms in dorms BY DOMINIQUE DINARDO Staff Writer

All students who are residents at Cabrini College can seem to agree on one thing: adjusting to dorm life is difficult. There are many different options for on campus residency. First year students are usually placed in Woodcrest, Xavier or East Residence Hall. Sophomores have a tendency to live in the houses on campus. Juniors and seniors occupy most of West Residence Hall and the Cabrini Apartment Complex. If sharing a room is new to students, the transition to dorm life can be quite drastic. Cortney Hanson, sophomore special education major said, "Having guests over is the biggest challenge. You have to get your roommate's permission." However, having company over isn't the only problem. Nicholas Guglietti, freshman graphic design major said, "The hardest part about living in a dorm is trying to find space and time to study in a quiet place." Many first year students find it very difficult to focus on their school work especially when living in such close quarters with others. Junior exercise science major Julianna Ardire lived with roommates for her first two years at Cabrini. She now lives in a single in West Residence Hall. "It is a lot more quiet. This year is a lot of work and being in a quiet area is just what I needed." Ardire said. Although sharing a small space with someone might be a difficult conversion, freshman accounting and criminal justice major, Melanie Carpenter is making it work just fine. When asked how she stays organized, she said "I am

an organized person. I have everything color-coded and I have bins for absolutely everything." Carpenter lives in a double in Woodcrest and said in reference to her roommate, "I have never shared a room before but I am adjusting very well. We get along great and I have double the outfit choices!" Dorm life is certainly not for everyone, but those who choose to spend their time wisely and stay organized will find it is not only adaptable, but also fun. @DMD376

Anti-rape nail polish could save lives BY KATIE MUSKA Staff Writer

One in five female students are sexually assaulted before they graduate college. Ninety percent of sexual assaults happen on college campuses. Because of these statistics, college partying just got a little bit safer. Four creative and proactive college students at North Carolina University (Ankesh Madan, Tyler Confrey-Maloney, Stephen Grey and Tasso Von Windheim) have come up with a nail polish that actually changes color when it comes in contact with three of the most common date-rape drugs: Rohypnol, Xanax and GHB.

This trendy new invention has the duel purpose of style and safety. While going out, having fun and looking her best, all a girl has to do is simply dip her polished finger in her drink. If the color changes, the drink has been drugged. The girl can now drop the drink and leave the party safely. Although this seems like such a positive invention, there has been some negative talk about the product. Critics have said that rather than fighting against the issue of rape itself, this product just puts the job of fighting this fight on the women alone. Some say that instead of finding ways to protect women from rape, someone should be finding a way to stop rape all together.

The young women of Cabrini have something to say about the stylish guard. This comment and others similar ones showed a general positive outlook on the nail polish from the college women here. "The nail polish is helpful because it gives women power that they don't normally have, and anyone who criticizes it needs to realize that until we live in a world where people don't think that way, we need ways to empower ourselves, and the nail polish helps with that," Kristina Giles, a sophomore marketing major, said. @KATIEAMUSKA GRAPHIC DESIGNED BY MACKENZIE HARRIS

Secrets between the sheets-Sex talk at Cabrini BY AMARRA BOONE Photo Editor

GRAPHIC CREATED BY MACKENZIE HARRIS AND AMARRA BOONE

Sex, let the word sink into your pours and expose the pleasure that it can give between someone you care about or the fling of the week. The exploration of sexual encounters is something that students experiment with while at college. From their first weeks on campus, relationships are formed by the swipe of an Apple phone screen. What are you doing later? Do you want to come over, are often codes for something more. This is not for the relationships or the prom king and queen who have dated for years but for the students who are having sex. "It's not a necessity but most people engage in sex at college," freshman, Chelsea Jones said. Of course, there are papers to be written and clubs to be involved in. However, sex serves as an extra curricular that is not publicly advertised but is as well known on campus. Jones who has not officially declared a major at Cabrini, but who is interested in secondarymathematics , seems to be well-informed about sex on campus. When asked "What do you think about sex at Cabrini" Jones and her friends said in unison "we were just talking about that." The talk is real and is not something that is fabricated or miss represented. "Freshmen come to college and they are officially off a leash. So they are trying to experience everything they can in the first couple weeks of college and sex is definitely high up there.," Freshmen Tori Buckley. College is a time for maturity and that includes a better understanding on your whole self. Intellectually, morally, spiritually and even sexually. This does not mean constantly viewing pornography or gossiping about others personal sexual encounters, but having a better appreciation for sex as it relates to human interaction and culture on campus. Given the discretion of personal college decisions not everyone finds sexual awareness important. Imani Mawusi, a sophomore gasped at hearing the word "sex." Thrown off by the conversation that was about

to come up, the Philadelphia native admitted that she had sex while at Cabrini. As if at a deposition hearing, Mawusi answers were conservative. "I think people talk about it amongst friends, but not walking around talking about sex," Mawusi said. Mawusi also thinks that you should not be ashamed about talking about sex, especially with friends. Some college students do not stress about sex and the potential stigmas that come from it. Students like senior, finance major, Leland Taylor thinks there is a lack of information accessible to students who are having sex. Taylor isn't sexually active but thinks it is a part of maturing and "expressing emotions." "I think there should be more sexual education. There isn't enough," said Taylor. "I feel like people know how to have sex, but protecting themselves and informing them on the dangers people need to know more." Student medical services are a resource on campus that help students with their personal health care which includes sexual health. Their offices are located in the basement of Founders and are responsible for helping

single and okay with saying that he is sexually active. He is apart of more than three quarters of college campuses who enjoy having sex. "It is not about sex it is about getting it," Konneh said. "It's fun!." Hook-ups are out there in campus dorms, off -campus parties and easily accessible to people who want it. The public may not publicize that students are having sex but they are. "I don't think it’s part of the college experience, but us being human beings its natural to have sexual activities. We are at that age its normal to go out and bang someone," Christine Daniel, junior, mathematics major said. What are the benefits of having sex? The benefit of having sex is having sex. Daniel says that the hook-up world is dominating over the relationship world on campus. "Relationships are decreasing because more and more people are just hooking up. There is no need for relationships unless they necessarily want that personal connection," Daniel said. Sex could just distress your life or allow you to work out the natural urges you feel as an attractive person walks by you in the cafe. Without furthering that imagery, attraction between two people is natural and often shown physically. Sex is simply the climax of those feelings . At some point in time you will have to explore sex and the way it makes you feel. Senior, business major Kristofer Knight hit the nail on the head. "It depends on the person, some people are religious," Knight had been more sexual in previous years at Cabrini but thinks that sex for him is something that doesn't determine his growth as a person. "You can find out about yourself without sex," said Knight. By now the word sex has been sired into your frontal lobe, mentioned over 19 times to emphasis that the world is natural. Student medical services mission statement which is located on Cabrini's website, is to “provide quality, confidential, age-appropriate care that is accessible, affordable, cost-effective, and culturally sensitive." According, to TIMES magazine college hook-ups are decreasing. In a study led by author Martin Monto, a professor of sociology at the University of Portland in Oregon, states that less millennial students now participate in sex with multiple partners than their parents generation x. “College students today are not having more sexual partners [after] age 18, more sexual partners over the last year or more sex than their parents,” Martino said. From the students surveyed 77 percent of college students surveyed have regular partners from Monto's study. Is that number high? Sophomore, business major Mohammed Konneh is

Cavaliers successful during weekend tournament BY JADE MOTTO Staff Writer

The women’s Cabrini Volleyball team had a very successful weekend. The girls returned back home with a pair of victories at the Moravian Tri Match. They defeated Bryn Mawr with a score of 3-0 before earning a 3-1 win over the host, the Moravian Greyhounds. These no conference wins pulled the Cavs 9-5 onto a great start for their season. Junior Cassidy Koenig helped set up Amy Guarino for her ten kills against Bryn Mawr by having 31 assists. Her younger sister, sophomore Kelly Guarino, paired a match high with 11 digs and two service aces. Along with other help from the team, the girls took over Moravian’s home court. Kelly Guarino was excited for the win and was very optimistic after the match. “This was a major win for our team because Moravian is know to be a great team,” Guarino said. “ I am really happy for my girls and hope this will give us a great start for the next game against Moravian.” Guarino said. With the girls having momentum with winning their first match, they also had a great victory against Moravian. They were dominant, only losing the second match. The ending score after the four matches were 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20. Koenig evenly distributed the ball across the net with a high 52 assists in the match. Guarino contributed 19 kills and 11 digs, Freshman Anne Marie Jones with 16 kills and 14 digs, Junior Jen

Grenauer added nine kills and Christine Ingargiola totaled eight kills, Kelly Guarino tallied a career high 30 digs. Koenig was eager to bounce back and make the needed adjustments after losing the second set of the match. “After losing the second match, we knew as a team we had to pick up our tempo and pull together as one. We needed to communicate more, and we did. Communication is the key in volleyball”. The Cavs hope to continue their success into their first conference match of the season against Gwyned Mercy University on Thursday Sept. 25. game time is set for 7 p.m

After an average showing at the Highlander invitational on Sept.6, the Cabrini cross country teams competed in the Penn State-Brandywine Invitational this past Saturday, Sept. 20. Both teams had great showings, the men’s team managed to come in second place and the women came in first place. The women’s team took on the 5K course and certainly didn’t disappoint. Sophomore Emily Lauziere led the women’s team with a time of 24:46 with that time Lauziere took home second place honors. The rest of the women’s team had a solid meet as well. Sophomore Malley DeSanto, freshmen Alexis Cunningham, and junior Joanne Schrank held their own and finished in the top 20. Senior Jessica Lanchang also had a great showing, finishing third. She finished with a time of 25:33 but she was very strategic in her approach. “A lot of runners lost their momentum soon as they reached the hills so that was the best point to gain on them, despite the difficulty,” Lanchang said. After a successful meet, Lanchang plans to continue her success through hard work. “I used the competition as a way to push me and set a better pace. This week I am going to continue working hard at practices to prepare for the meet. At this upcoming meet, I plan on continuing to push my pace, run hard and aim for another win,“ Lanchang said. The men’s team had a great showing as well, finishing second out of seven teams in the 8K circuit. Senior Ernest Ahweza placed third and led the Blue and White after running 34:30. Junior Pete Lyden followed right behind Ahweza with a time of 34:31. Senior Rashid Kulaib finished with a time of 37:35 and placed 17th overall. Sophmore Hassan Goines Jr. and freshman Kevin Blake tailed in after Kulaib finishing 20th and 24th. Lyden was extremely content with his performance. "Coming in second place was a very good achievement for the race," Lyyden said. Lyden is looking forward to the teams next meet this coming Friday. "I will be competing against faster guys, and it will force me to run a bit faster and gain some more speed," Lyyden said. The Cavaliers next meet is Friday Sept. 26th for the Lancaster Bible Homecoming Invitational at 4 p.m.

Women’s tennis sweeps Baptist Bible College BY JILL NAWOYSKI Staff Writer

The Lady Cavs improved to 6-2 after beating Baptist Bible 9-0, on Sept. 22, The Cavs kicked off the match by starting in doubles play. Juniors Terra McHenry and Tori Yeich started off on a positive note by gaining an 8-3 doubles win. Next, senior Samantha Trumbo and sophomore Elena Conway as shown in the photo, added another win to the board, 8-4. Last in the doubles category, junior Nicole Broccolino and freshman Maggie Javitt finished with an 8-0 sweep. For Trumbo and Conway, the chemistry is prevalent due to the fact that they played together last year, as well. “We are super comfortable with each other. We have good communication, and we always talk to each other between points,” Conway said. Three days prior, the pair finished with yet another win, 8-2, against Rosemont.

“I think that we are good partners because we communicate really well. We know how to pump each other up; she levels me out,” said Trumbo. The Cavaliers topped their opponents

in single play, as well, with all six girls winning their matches. Although junior Nicole Broccolino was satisfied with her win, but she feels that there is always room for improvement.

“I need to focus on consistency and creating my own pace. Sometimes, I am letting the other person dictate the point too much; I need to keep playing my own game.” As a whole, it was a great day to be a Cavalier. “You can’t argue when you beat a team 9-0,” head coach Stephen Parker said. The win against Baptist Bible brought the team to 4-0 in the CSAC. “It was a good win today, because it was a CSAC match. I didn’t think it was going to be too CABRINI ATHLETICS tough, but we always prepare for matches normally and go from there,” said Trumbo. The Lady Cavs are determined to keep the momentum going as they take on the rest of the teams in their conference,

while having fun along the way. “Let’s play for today, and tomorrow we will play for tomorrow. We can’t get ahead of ourselves,” said Parker. The team is looking forward to continuing their winning streak in their next match against Immaculata University on October 3rd at 3:30 p.m.

Shut out snaps Cavs four game losing streak BY HOWARD BLAKE III Sports Editor

After being shutout on Sept. 20 by DeSales University, the Cabrini women’s soccer team recorded a shutout of their own. The Cavs dominated with a 6-0 victory over CSAC opponent, Cedar Crest College. The win snapped the Cavs four game losing streak and placed them at 2-5 on the year with a 1-0 record in conference play. The Blue and White dominated the game from the beginning. Just 4:46 into the first half, junior Meghan Martin found junior Devon Miller for the first goal of

the afternoon. In the 22nd minute, freshman Taylor Tralie found Senior Gabby Meck who then passed to Martin for the Cavs second goal of the day. Just about five minutes later the Lady Cavs took a 3-0 lead after Martin assisted junior Dana Peterson for her first goal of the day. Shortly after, in the 27th minute, Peterson continued her solid performance after assisting senior Melissa Scanzano giving the Cavs a 4-0 lead. The Cavs continued their domination in the first half and finished strong after Tralie assisted Miller for her second goal of the day. In the first half the

Senior Mellisa Scanzano won’t back down to a fight. Cavaliers had 17 shots, 12 of which were shots on goal. Cedar Crest didn’t have much success in the first half failing to fire a shot. Cedar Crest recorded seven saves in the first half but still trailed the Cavs 5-0. The Cavaliers managed to score one goal in the second half. The Cavs sixth goal of the day came from freshman Brittany Runyen who was assisted by Miller. In a busy day for the Cavaliers, Miller led the Blue and White with two goals on the day. “We knew what we had to do coming into the game and that was to win, so getting the ball into the box was key,” Miller said. “I feel that the team did a good job of moving the ball which

setup a lot of good plays for not only myself but others to score as well,” Miller said. “It was a team effort and I wouldn’t have been able to score without them.” Sophomore Allie Vallen led the team with six shots, five of which were shots on goal. Meck, Miller and Martin had four shots a piece along with three shots on goal. Martin and Tralie led the team with two assists each. As a team the Cavaliers had a combined seven assists on the day. The Blue and White recorded 29 shots, 23 of which were shots on goal. Both goalkeepers Alivia Dietsch and Marissa Jenkins saw action. Not much work to be done for the goalkeepers as no goals were attempted.
