Founder’s Day looks at food preservation with Drexel students BY DOMINIQUE DINARDO AND ABBIE KEEFE Asst. Lifestyles Editor and Asst. News Editor Food waste is the third largest greenhouse gas emission. Dr. Cathy Yungmann as well as Dr. Tom O’Donnell advised and guided students through interviews with services in Philadelphia and Chester working to eliminate this. Senior students Greg Smith, Lauren Hight, Nick Cipollone and Amber Marshall presented on the issue. These four students spent the past months diving into the issues to create media for a documentary. The importance of this presentation is to get audiences to understand that just because food is not perfect does not mean that it does not contain nutritional value. Preserving food is important and can help a lot of people. For example, if an apple is bruised it should not be thrown away. It can be used for something such as apple sauce or jam instead. Tom O’Donnell set up many contacts for this project. O’Donnell’s anticipates getting this study exposed nationally. “Our hope is to take this content they are putting together and try to develop a
new methodology teaching people about this very important issue,” O’Donnell said. Greg Smith presented a segment clip of Brown Shop Right manager Tim Nolf. Brown Shop Right operates a little differently than most grocery stores. They try to only order what they need and separate the foods into categories for sale or donation based on the quality of the produce. In an average month they can donate in produce alone over 6,000 pounds. Nolf has been in the grocery business for 24 years and has seen the amount of food wasted. “It really stops and makes you think, what a shame,” Nolf said. “All this food that is thrown away can’t be processed to people who are hungry, homeless or can’t be given to people who may need help with their groceries,” he added. Lauren Hight discussed the second process of Brown Shop Right. “All the products that Brown Shop Right chooses not to keep goes to Drexel University’s culinary program,” Hight said. The search for a parking spot: the endless loop
Editor’s note: How many residents have permits? How many permits have been sold in total? How many staff members have permits? How many spots are there for staff alone? How many spots are there for just students? In regards to getting more parking spots, what are Radnor regulations for parking lots? Is there a limit on paved land, sewage or run-off? Loquitur will be trying to get these answers soon.

We all know the drill. We want to find a parking spot close to Founder’s, close to Dixon or close to our residence. We are willing to circle the lot until someone leaves. We are willing to waste our time and gas. Sometimes it seems worse than the King of Prussia Mall at Christmas. The vicious cycle of spending so much time to look for a parking spot, is all due to the fact that there are not enough on campus. The lack of parking is a huge inconvenience, not to mention how often students are getting parking tickets. The crackdown on parking is understandable because people who do not have permits are used to parking on campus, but now they cannot because they are getting ticketed. And for those who have paid their $55 for the semester and are still getting tickets for no reason, this is extremely frustrating because they have to go through the appeal process. What happens if students refuse to pay for the ticket? Well, on Cabrini’s website it says, “If the ticket is not paid or appealed in the allotted time additional costs will accrue.” Once the parking ticket has been given, students have 15 days to appeal the ticket. We advise any All info found via cabrini.edu
student who has been given a parking ticket and has a permit or just thinks the reason for the ticket was unfair, to appeal it. 60 percent of students live on campus, according to Cabrini’s website and there are 12 residence halls. Let’s say that half of that 60 percent has a parking permit, where are they supposed to park? The amount of people who are walking from complete opposite sides of the campus just to find a parking spot, is absolutely ridiculous. We are not asking to have a VIP spot right outside of every building, but we are asking for there to be more spaces on campus. The editorial staff understands that this is easier said than done, but is it possible to get more parking spots? All in all, parking is obviously an inconvenience and we propose that public safety should allow students to park closer to their residence hall, whether that is in Founder’s parking lot, in front of the Mansion or even eventually adding more parking on campus.

Week Feb. 19, 2015 Feb. 11: Chapel Hill shooting Three University of North Carolina students were killed at a condominium complex Tuesday night. A neighbor of theirs, Craig Stephen Hicks, killed the Muslim students—Deah Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. The motive for the murders was unclear: family members called it a hate crime, while police said that it appeared to be motivated by an ongoing parking dispute. The killings caused an outrage over Twitter, causing the hashtag #MuslimLivesMatter, as well as questions of why mainstream media was slow to report on the incident.

Work study students suffer Employers say graduates are from scholarship cut not as prepared as they think BY DOMINIQUE DINARDO Asst. Lifestyles Editor Recently, students who work on campus have had a little freetime on their hands. Cabrini has decided to make a cut in workstudy students’ hours. Instead of allotting students up to $2,000 per semester, it has been cut down to $1,000. This is causing concern and budgeting problems for some students. During college, many students are forced to either take out loans or work their way through college to afford an education. According to the Project on Student Debt, in the state of Pennsylvania, the average college student graduates with $32,528 of debt. This intimidating amount drives a lot of students to work no matter how tight their schedule may be. On-campus work-study is a nice option for students who may not have transportation to an off-campus establishment. Junior exercise science major Michael Camacho is not only a student but an athlete as well. He is doing his best to budget his funds, but the hour and pay cut is certainly effecting him. “I can only work in the Spring. That’s why $2,000 is so important
to me because unlike other students who don’t play a sport, I can’t work both semesters.” During the off-season you can find Camacho in the library working as many hours as he can to make up for the fall semester off. “I try and get as much as I can out of working only one semester,” Camacho said. Attending class, playing a sport and working is a lot for a student’s schedule. However in 2011, a US Census report said that 71 percent of the 19.7 million college undergrads are working. Since then, the number has only grown. “It was just nice to know I could earn the extra 1,000 because every dollar helps go back into tuition,” Camacho said. Not only is this affecting the students, but it is also taking a toll on the offices they work for. Jackie Marciano of the alumni office said, “Next year our department is only getting two work study students. This year we have five.” Since work study is not offered to everyone, students who find their work elsewhere are happy they did. CONTINUE READING ONLINE @DMD376
BY AMY HELD AND BRIANNA MORRELL Photo Editor and Asst. Social Media Editor Each college student attends class every day with a goal in mind that in four years they will be prepared to interview, get a job and be successful in building a career. However, according to two national surveys of business and nonprofit leaders and current college students, conducted by Hart Research Associates and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, students may not be as prepared as we think. The employers surveyed gave college graduates low scores for preparedness across learning outcomes. Students think they are better prepared. The survey revealed that employers thought broad learning was most important to build a long career. Students and employers were all in agreement that the most important learning outcomes are written and oral communication,

On the down side they are unrealistic about their role in the workplace, they lack work ethic and integrity. Basically they reflect society in general.” Tad Makowieki, co-owner of Ryno Production in Pittsburgh, Pa., said, “Written communication is a skill mostly lacking in our hires. We just hired two graphic/animation artists. They are both extremely talented, but one can write and the other can’t.” Cabrini graduate Michael Kazanjian is the vice president, head of Annuity and Retirement Plan Services Marketing in Philadelphia, Pa. Lower gas prices affect fuel-spending behaviors and physical activity of consumers BY JOEY RETTINO Managing Editor The lot of the Sunoco gas station, on Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, is busier since the new year. According to the American Automobile Association, the current average price for gasoline in Pennsylvania is $2.37. The Sunoco’s price for regular gasoline presently matches the states average at the AAA’s listed price. Sunoco is not alone. The Exxon on Gulf Road in King of Prussia, the Getty on Fyette Street in Conshehocken, and the Mobil on Valley Forge Road in Wayne all boast gasoline prices that are between $2.30 and $2.50. More people coming to “fill up” also means more people buying their Carona Grape Dutch Masters, Redbulls and soft pretzels from the gas station’s store rather than somewhere else—which is obviously good for the gas stations. “We get a lot more people now then we did a few months back,” Devon Wright, Sunoco employee, said. “The bell on the door is always dinging from people coming in and out of the store.” While the recent change in gas prices has notably affected the revenue of these businesses, it does not stop there. The com-
munity’s general health and driving behaviors are all but a few examples of elements affected by the change in price. So, how are these facets affected and why did the price of gas get so low in the first place? The price of gasoline, which is largely attributed to the supply and demand of oil by the global market, has two main reasons it has recently plummeted. Thanks to the United States and Canada’s latest jump in oil production, which has caused a surplus in oil, in conjunction with the lack of demand for oil by Asia and Europe, gasoline prices have dropped. With the reasons for the drop in price out of the way, it is important to understand the larger ripples that the change in gasoline prices have on the consumer. The study “Is There an Association Between Gasoline Prices and Physical Activity? Evidence from American Time-Use Data” by the Journal of Policy Analysis and Managent, found that high gasoline prices are often associated with increased participation in time spent on “certain physical activities,” while concurrently people were found to be less engaged in physical activities when there were lower gas prices. Higher gas prices does not just coax people to take part in walking, bicycling and running instead of using motorized transportation, but also leads families to cutback on expenditures such
as hired help for household chores or gardening and to take on the tasks themselves, according to the study. Lower gas prices do not just make people more physically active, but also changes how sparingly people decide to use the gasoline they purchase. Students who commute to campus are the ones to be most affected by the change in gas prices at Cabrini—notably the way they chose to use the gasoline they buy changes depending

on the rate of the fuel in the first place. “It doesn’t take much money to fill my tank so it doesn’t bother me when I have to fill it,” Francie McPeak, education major, said. Like McPeak, fellow commuter, Morgan Burn’s, education major, gasoline-burning behavior has also changed since the drop in gasoline price. “The fact that the gas prices are so much lower makes my commute to school so much easier. Seniors present on food security New V.P. appointed for marketing and communications BY ABBIE KEEFE Asst. News Editor Celia Cameron has earned the title of vice president for marketing and communications for the college and has the background to prove it. CABRINI.EDU Cameron has the experiNew VP for marketing and comence of workmunications Celia Cameron ing at educational institutions, prior to her current position at Cabrini. She has worked at Lehigh University, The University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, Fordham University as well as Columbia University. All positions were at educational systems and revolved around marketing and communications, but each was focused on different areas of higher education. At Fordham and Wharton, she worked on admissions marketing and student life communications while at Penn and Lehigh, she interviewed alumni, created publications and supervised the development of a new website. The new V.P. has always worked in bigger systems and is looking forward to changing it up. “I am very excited. I’ve always worked at large institutions, and it can sometimes feel like you’re a cog in the machine,” Cameron said. “Here at Cabrini, I can have a positive impact on the college in so many ways. I’m also excited to work for a college with such a strong mission and vision for change.”
Cameron will oversee marketing and communications and is looking forward to begin her new chapter. “The great thing about this job is that it combines all of my experience into one role, and that is so exciting,” Cameron said. “I get to draw on more than a decade of knowledge, marketing to audiences across the engagement cycle.” She and her team will work on admissions, advancement, academic programs, amongst many other things, in hopes to find “creative ways to get the word out about Cabrini, its culture, and its academic offerings,” Cameron said. “Working together will strengthen our messaging and make our marketing more effective.” Cameron was not originally looking for a new position, but her mentor sent her a posting of the job and agreed that she would be a great fit. Cameron did some research on the small school and the rest is history. “About an hour into my research, I was pretty excited about the president’s vision for the future and the social justice and service mission. I realized it would be foolish for me to pass on the posting, so I applied,” Cameron said. As for the future, Cameron has very high hopes for her team’s work and for her time to come at Cabrini. She hopes to increase interest in the school by reevaluating the school’s online presence, make internal communications more useful and use story telling as a way to create an entertaining narrative for the school. Cameron also believes that there are many new opportunities to be discovered. “My hope is to cement the department as a resource for the college, not just the high-level branding work, but for anyone who needs guidance,” Cameron said. “I want us to help people accomplish their goals while staying true to Cabrini’s branded identity.” @ABBIEROSEKEEFE
New V.P. of adult and professional programs helps students see potential BY NAJAH DINGLE Staff Writer
CABRINI.EDU
New VP of adult and professional programs Marguerite Weber. A new vice president has been put in place and is here to help students believe in themselves. If any of the students believe there is no future for them or are stuck, Cabrini has a new way to help. Vice president for adult and professional programs, Marguerite Weber, will be bringing something life changing to Cabrini. After many potential vice presidents were evaluated to join Cabrini, they ended up with a women who will be your thought partner. Weber has an education background that consists of many degrees: a bachelor degree of
arts in literature, master of arts in adult education and a certificate of advanced graduate study in rhetoric, master of arts in English, graduate certificate in institutional research, a doctorate of arts in higher education and English. Weber came from a childhood where the girls in the family were not allowed to get an education. So she decided to leave her home and put herself through college. She ended up working full time with three jobs as an undergraduate. She did not have it easy as a child. Her experiences and education influenced the person she is today. Her job is to help graduate and undergraduate students by building programs into schools so they can have a better chance of high education. She is a guide and she helps all sorts of students find that light within themselves. The plans Weber has for Cabrini is to build a program where adults can turn to if they do not have the option of staying on campus but still want to be a part of this school. She want to give them more online options. She also want to incorporate everything she has done before in her line of education such as helping people get what they need in order to get where they want to be. Weber says the best way to
guide someone is to not say “You can do it!” or “I know how you feel.” Her way of doing things is to come from a place of honesty and to guide them by saying “this is what it’s going to take, this is what you need and this is how I can help you get what you need. Now you have to put the effort in and I’ll walk you through it,” Weber said. “You can change your stars. Effort helps you through college not intelligence,” Weber said. Weber is inspired by a researcher named Carol Dweck who speaks about the mindset of learning. According to Dweck, intelligence is not inherited, it’s learned. Also the kind of effort you put in will determine your results. The mission of Cabrini has a lot to do with why Weber fell in love with this college and wanted to be apart it. “I fell in love with Cabrini. Everybody is so excited with the mission and having a big impact on students, that is the work I like to do. It’s a good fit,” Weber said. This is Weber’s first time in the position of Vice President and she is very excited about it and can not wait to start making a difference in people’s lives.

“You have to talk to people, you have to encourage others to produce although it is blemished. Drexel’s program is efficient in making sure surplus food is used for its nutritional value. Nick Cipollone talked about the business plan these companies make so they can make profit off of these surplus foods. “Basically with second chance food it is going to cut their product cost which will enable them to make more at cheaper rate,” Cipollone said. Lastly, Amber Marshall talked about the last step of the surplus food challenge. She talked about City Team, a shelter in Chester that cooks all their food from donations. “Serving three hot meals a day, 365 days a year they cook for many people providing them nutrients to thrive and work,” Marshall said. After all the clips were shown
there was a discussion held about options that Cabrini could take as a campus to eliminate our personal food waste. Students, faculty and staff all spoke up and said how they felt about the situation and what Cabrini could do to change this. “Penn State has a food bin on every floor of every building. So there is a bin for trash, plastic, paper and food. They conquest every piece of food scrap on campus,” Yungmann said. Professor Fitzgerald spoke about his experience in boot camp. “There was a sign that read take what you want, but eat what you take. So in other words, just don’t take food for the sake of taking food.” Although there was no official plan set in motion for Cabrini, Friday Feb 20 the campus will be hosting its first ever food drive.

Video presentation during the senior food security forum Feb. 16. BY NAJAH DINGLE Staff Writer The topic of childhood obesity and hunger will be brought to Grace Hall this month. This is a significant topic about how both issues are related and what the community can do to progress after the discussion is held. Dr. Maria Elena Hallion, associate professor of the exercise science and health promotion department, put together a symposium with the help of others. The symposium will be held in Grace Hall on Friday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration will be until Feb.13 or until seats are filled. Back in 2011, Hallion did a sabbatical at DuPont children’s weight management clinic. Winning the room pick lottery
BY PAT WHALEN Asst. Perspectives Editor
As the winter is coming to an end, room pick is getting closer and closer. Seniors will graduate, juniors will become seniors, sophomores will turn into upperclassmen and freshmen become a little more relevant. The way that room pick works is simple. Seniors go first followed by juniors which is followed by, well you get the point. Freshmen are still at the bottom of the totem pole. Each class has a lottery if you will. Numbers are given to students in each class as a whole at random. The lowest number being 1, gets the first choice as to where they want to live on campus. When I was a freshman, I got the highest number and I was absolutely thrilled. One day later I found out that there was nothing to be excited about. I had the worst number possible. If you are a freshman, you are going to have to wait for what seems like an eternity to finally get to choose where you are going to live next year, unless, of course, you decide to live off campus. The best thing about the lottery system that Cabrini uses is that whoever you are going to room with, whether it be one, two or three other roommates, all of their numbers that they
receive are considered when picking a spot to live on campus. So if I got the worst number but my future roommate got the best number, we would get to pick first. That always helps me considering how awful my luck is. No really, I have the worst luck ever. This year I lived with three other people. Two juniors and one senior. The best part about that is that we get to pick with the senior class since we live with one. Essentially, our numbers didn’t even matter because we were one class ahead of the rest of the juniors. Thanks Cody. Now we “happily” live in the apartment complexes. We live across from Mike Mullen, have worse service than the Sahara Desert and heating that did not work the first semester. Room pick did me dirty once again.

Is spring break too early this year?
BY JADE MOTTO Staff Writer
With no holidays in the spring semester besides Easter, we all bank on spring break. Spring Break is a week off of school, to go anywhere you want or just head back home to see friends and family. Some people define spring break as a week where all the dumb kids go to Cancun and drink a good amount of alcohol and take a bunch of drugs while level-headed kids catch up on their work and take the time off to relax. Which kind of person are you? When we watch movies or even YouTube clips of spring break we imagine break to be so different then going on a vacation with your parents. The spring break that we imagine in our heads is every kid’s dream. Well, I know it’s mine. The break that we imagine is the atmosphere with thousands of kids surrounding a pool with nothing but alcohol and fun games being played along with loud music. Not everyone’s spring break holidays take part
at the same time. Cabrini’s is held Feb. 27 until March 8. Many other schools may have break from March 6 to March 15. “I define spring break, as no studying and a break from school, with no worries. I have nothing big planned for spring break, but a trip to the mountains to relax and get away from the city and schoolwork,” junior Helene Shapley, said. At Cabrini if you play a spring sport, you do not get much of a break depending on the coach. You either go away and practice in scrimmages against other schools to get ready for the season or stay at Cabrini and have practices to make sure you are prepared for the season. Sophomore Kelly Guarino, volleyball team player said,“I enjoy spring break because I get to go home for a week. I get to see all of my friends and spend time with my family.” Guarino’s practices start right back up when break ends. “I do have off of volleyball for a full week, but as soon as we come back from spring break, we start our spring season. We have two practices a week and which also include lifting and conditioning as well,” Guarino said. Some people see spring break as a time for partying and having no regrets, where others see it as a time to relax and catch up with friends and family. @MOTTOJADE

Ahh, SAT’s. The anxiety, the sweat, the tears—we all remember. But uh-oh, what’s this? The SAT’s and ACT’s will be optional for students applying to attend Cabrini? We filled in little circles to the point that carpal tunnel seemed like it was just around the corner. We paid for tutors and SAT preparatory classes. We worked our butts off because we had to and because there were no other options for those who wanted to attend college, to get ahead and to start their lives. Then again, I’m happy for those who do not have to go through what we have all had to go through. After all, there are the students who are so unbelievably intellectual that just do not seem to have the same testtaking super powers as others do. They are not off the hook completely, though. Cabrini will still look at the student’s high school academics,
WE FILLED IN LITTLE CIRCLES TO THE POINT THAT CARPAL TUNNEL SEEMED LIKE IT WAS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.
”
So how does an incoming freshman let the school know that they would prefer their scores not to be viewed? They should simply check off a box on the application, when filling it out. If they filled out the application before January of 2015 and would like to not have their scores viewed, the student should contact their admissions counselor. However, if a student decides not to submit said scores, they should be aware that they may not be accepted towards the Honors Program as well as
the Affiliate Programs, which include Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physician Assistant Studies, PrePhysical Therapy and Pre-Podiatric Medicine. All in all, maybe we have been making too much of SAT’s all along. Maybe Cabrini is taking the correct step forward and honestly, it is about time somebody did. @ABBIEROSEKEEFE

Students do not need to send in SAT scores when applying. However, students will not be eligible for the honors program or some affiliate programs without the scores. Is there too much pressure placed on SAT’s or is this move making Cabrini look like a joke?

Millersville tragedy brings dating violence close to home If. Hall’s twin sister, Kristen, lives on campus. Her entire family is torn apart. Hall’s mother was a single parents who had to riase three girls on her own. Her twin sister will need to go about her days, going to classes, seeing friends, trying to make a life all while haunted by the tragedy that took her sister away. “It will never happen to me.” Young people think we are invincible. Nothing bad could ever happen, not really. We listen to the news rattling off terrible tragedies and events as though they are stats from a sports game Karlie Hall, an 18-year-old freshman at Millserville University was killed by her boyfriend on Sunday, Feb. 8. Hall was strangled to death. Millersville University is a little more than an hour’s drive from our campus. Loquitur covered domestic violence during a special issue in the fall, and focused on domestic and dating violence. According to police reports, Hall’s 19–year-old boyfriend, Gregorio Orrostieta, called 911 in the morning, claiming that he was trying to save her and administering CPR. However, cops believe this was all part of an elaborate act. Hall was allegedly dead hours before he dialed 911. Orrostieta and Hall were fighting at a party, which only escalated when they went back to her dorm room. He pushed her head into a chair, hit her and ended up strangling her to death. It is unfathomable and horrible that a young life was taken so soon. If people reported the boyfrend’s strange actions, if she was able to contact someone for help, if someone saved her while she was clawing and fighting for her life, she could have had a future.
on our campus is almost unheard of. Walking around campus days after Karlie’s death was sad and you could see that many were affected. There were many events on campus to remember her life and support her such as a candlelight vigil and bake sales to raise money for her family. One student created a fund page online where students, faculty and other community members raised a total of over $14,000 to help Karlie’s family pay for the funeral.” Poque attended the same high school as Hall. “Karlie will always be remembered at Millersville University, “ Pogue said. @JESSICAPARADYSZ

Kanye West demands that awards go to Beyonce
Infamously a rapper has rudely opened his mouth once again. Among the winners of the 57th Grammy Awards was Beck. The artist took home the Album of the Year award, beating the night’s top winner Sam Smith and even Beyonce. Kanye West was once again unhappy with Beyonce’s loss to Beck and reportedly told E! news after the show “I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more. And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should’ve given his award to Beyonce.” I saw Beck walk up to take his award and West almost interrupt him, but while watching the ceremony I merely thought that West was trying to be funny and make light of his mistake. During the 2009 Video Music Awards’s, West jumped on stage after Taylor Swift won Best Female Video. He took the microphone from Swift and said, “Imma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” This move shocked many and led a number of celebrities to condemn West through tweets. Rolling Stone magazine would go on to mark this event the wildest moment in VMA history. After all of the backlash I would think that West would have learned to have a little more respect for artists other than Beyonce, but he managed to prove to pessimists that people really don’t change. In a later interview with E! news’s Ryan Seacrest, West claimed that voices in his head are what led him to

make this statement. I think West may just be trying to save himself from becoming disliked throughout the industry. Ryan Seacrest’s interview with West revealed that the rapper had plans to go into the studio to work with Taylor Swift. This move could have potentially helped West rebuild his reputation by showing he’s tried to right his wrongs but I think his comment after the Grammy’s will hinder his ability to show he has learned his lesson. I remember it was incredibly astounding to watch

as West hopped on-stage to interrupt Taylor Swift six years ago, but to see that he has not really changed his ways makes me question how sincere anything he does actually is. Even Kim Kardashian, his wife, who is arguably famous for no reason, appeared to roll her eyes as the original statement that caused all the drama came from West’s mouth, yet again. A few twitter users have defended the rapper, whose
singing career has made him popular and brought him the fame that enabled his rude behavior. Unless you’re doing everything in your power to create the world you want on a daily basis, then leave Kanye alone. As popular as Beyonce may be, I am personally not a fan of “Queen Bey” and I think that Kanye West is in need of learning how to let someone other than Beyonce receive praise for artistry.

‘50 Shades’ album may be as sultry as the movie BY JESSICA PARADYSZ Perspectives Editor
“50 Shades of Grey” trailers have been played on repeat on TV screen and YouTube ads, leading up to it is Valentine's day weekend release. People are frenzied over the whips, handcuffs and red room romance, but forget the pulsing music played underneath the actress’s pleas of “tie me up, please.” The most memorable song is The Weeknd’s infectious “Earned it.” The singer is featured in Sia’s “Elastic Heart,” and former Nickelodeon star turned petite songstress’s Arianna Grande’s “Love Me Harder” video. The melody is sexily slow, while Abel Tesfaye whispers “I will care for you.” The video features barely-clothed dancers in an abandoned theater with sparkling chandlers and red velvet curtains. The chairs are reminiscent of Broadway's “Chicago's" cell block tango scene. Dakota Johnson, the actress that plays the girl that catches Mr. Grey’s eye, so to speak hangs from the ceiling like some kind of human-rhinestone chandelier. Besides all of the artistry in the video, the song alone is soulful and hypnotic. Listen a few times and the song could seem to be playing from speakers walking down the hallways. Just do not try to hang from the ceilings like Johnson. What girl can resist him crooning, “Cause girl you're perfect, You're always worth it, And you deserve it, The way you work it, Cause girl you earned it.” British singer Ellie Golding, who became popular for “Lights” that played incessantly on the radio in 2010, adds her angelic and breathy voice to the sizzling soundtrack. The song, “Love Me Like You Do” is dripping with sweetness like a floral perfume. The blonde singer has a place in the soundtrack, with seductive lyrics that bloom and come across breezily. Golding pleads, “ You're the light, you're the night, You're the color of my blood, You're the cure, you're the
pain, You’re the only thing I want to touch, never knew that it could mean so much, so much.” The soundtrack has a bit of flair and royalty with not one, but two Queen B songs. “Haunted” is a dark song, with strong vocals and eerie pops of strange sounds that make it even more dramatic and oddly irresistible. Viewers will be familiar with Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” remix. The original 2003 hit becomes “50 Shades” worthy as the tempo is slowed down to an enthralling beat. The song sounds almost unrecognizable, almost a fan instrumental cover come true. Sia’s “Salted Wound" contains a beautiful harp as her voice coats the lyrics. The song is very different and sultrier than pop hits “Elastic Heart” or “Chandelier, yet the unique sound and drawn-out vocals blends together too much, listeners can not discern the words. Skyler Gray’s, “I Know You” is reminiscent of Goulding’s style and is better than Sia’s track, while still having a stunningly fragile quality with pop roots. Grey, who is aptly name for the soundtrack, was featured in Diddy-Dirty Money’s “Coming Home” and Eminem’s “Doctor.” AWOLNATION's cover of Bruce Springsteen’s classic, ‘I’m On Fire,” could have been punchier, but the slowed down version fits the sultry theme. The 16 song album will keep listeners attention as much as the teasing trailers have. The eclectic bunch features songs by Frank Sinatra Annie Lennox and The

Spring break is quickly approaching, students say BY RENEE OLIVER Asst. Sports Editor
Believe it or not spring break is approaching. It is just two weeks away. The break might have snuck up on students and staff because it is scheduled earlier this school year. Some students are not excited about the change. “I don’t like it. All of my friends from back home have spring break a week later and I won’t even get to see them,” Darian Mary D’Alfanso, sophomore education major, said. “I would just like to get the chance to hangout with friends that I haven’t seen since winter break.” Spring break is one week and is scheduled for March 2 to March 8. In previous school years the break has been later. Not all students find the break to be too early, some think it came right on time. “I’ve been overwhelmed with school work because of the snow days and delays that caused for class to be
canceled. I desperately need a break, we all do,” Krista Mosco, graphic design major, said. Historically, spring break is known as being the one week where college students fly to different vacation spots across the country with their peers and go completely wild. College students from all over the country will travel to popular spring break hot spots such as Panama beach, Punta Cana, Daytona beach, Cancun and many other marketable places. There are student travel agencies such as StudentCity and StudentUniverse that specialize in finding allinclusive package deals for college students during spring break. StudentCity is the student travel industry leader that has brought over 400,000 students to different destinations. Although having travel agencies like these are extremely convenient, students are opting not to go on vacation. What can LinkedIn do for you? BY PATRICK WHALEN Asst. Perspectives Editor
LinkedIn is not just another social media site. It is a gateway to future careers. Melissa Moravec, assistant director for the center for career and professional development, showed a group of students and adults the steps in which they need to perfect their LinkedIn accounts. Moravec started out her presentation by going through five simple steps to improve LinkedIn accounts so that future employers see the skills and experience users have. The first step was to write an informative profile headline. So what does that mean? "An informative profile headline is the information about yourself. Employers want to know who you are, what you are doing, who do you help, how do you make their life or their work better and finally you want to give proof that you are credible," Moravec said. Employers are looking for specific skills or experience that individuals can exhibit through just including your grade point average, clubs or teams you are involved in can go a long way. The second step was to personalize your message. The main message that was sent across to the group for this step was to avoid
sounding cliché and to really try to connect with the person. Avoid saying things like "Hey, my name is so-and-so and I would like to connect with you," and instead say things like "Dear Mr. Employer, I am very interested in..." The key aspect of this step is to get personable and not sound like a robot. The third step was to connect with your weak ties. "A weak tie is someone that you know but are not close with. Your weak ties are probably the most important people when it comes to getting a job. The reason they are so important is because your strong ties like your family and your best friends overlap. So your best friend and you know a lot of the same people," Moravec said. Expanding and adapting to new things or people help so much because it helps you get more and more connections that you never even knew existed. CREATIVE COMMONS Step four was to update your status. Imagine Dragons: getting back to their roots BY ERICA ABBOTT News Editor
Imagine Dragons are aiming to redefine themselves in their new album “Smoke + Mirrors.” Their sophomore album, released Feb. 17, is a follow up to their Grammywinning album “Night Visions.” “Smoke + Mirrors” has a distinctive new sound among all the tracks and Imagine Dragons seem to be getting back to their roots with this new sound, drawing inspiration from the days of their EPs of “Hell and Silence” and “Imagine Dragons EP.” Let me just start off by saying that when I first heard each of the three singles, I was not all that impressed. The sound, which made me originally become fanatical about the native Las Vegas rock band, is very different from their debut album. But after listening to them a few times, I grew to love the new sound. By far the best songs off this album are “I’m So Sorry,” which is reminiscent of the sound of “Night Visions,” “Gold” and “Thief,” an exclusive bonus track from Target. That’s not to say that the other songs are bad but they take a little bit more getting used to. Songs like “Trouble” and “Polaroid” took the most getting used to because they deviate so far away from their “Night Visions” sound but if you know their early work, they will sound much more similar. When I first listened to “Shots,” the third single off the album, I thought it was the worst of the three singles. I didn’t like the pitch of the song and found it to be jum-
bled. Upon hearing them sing it live during a Target Super Bowl commercial, however, I came to love it. It is very catchy and a song that has beats you just want to dance along to. The other two singles, “I Bet My Life” and “Gold” were immediate favorites of mine. If you are listening to “Gold” on your iPhone though, you might not be all that dazzled. The deep sounds of the bass don’t translate well through the tiny speakers so it’s a lot better to listen to it on a laptop. In “I Bet My Life,” lead singer Dan Reynolds sings about his past, his parents and “taking the path that you would never want for me, I gave you hell through all the years.” The lyrics of the title track bring out the deception implied in the song’s title, “Smoke and Mirrors.” Reynolds sings of wanting to believe, even if everything is simply a dream. “All I believe, is it a dream that comes crashing down on me? All that I hope, is it just smoke and mirrors?” “Friction” is a bit of a so-so song for me. The beats and the singing style aren’t what I was expecting and really not the most appealing. But from the moment I first started listening to Imagine Dragons, Reynolds’ voice reminded me of certain sounds of Switchfoot. “Friction” definitely gives me the vibes of Switchfoot songs like “Meant To Live.” However, it just doesn’t feel like their best work because of the quality of work that they have previously produced. “It Comes Back To You” portrays a perspective of mental health in its calm melody. The song “Dream” takes a
slowed down approach with a sensitive piano ballad. “Summer,” though it makes me yearn for the return of the warmth with its smooth melody, is not my favorite off the album. It is definitely not their strongest piece The lyrics are striking but I feel as though the delivery is weak. “Hopeless Opus,” albeit a little strange, the guitar riffs make it more creatively charged. “The Fall” is the most unmemorable song off the album. Though the lyrics are powerful with lines such as “Ready for the leaves, ready for the colors to burn to gold and crumble away,” the general feel and ambience of the song just doesn’t make me want to listen to it on replay. There are also four exclusive Target tracks. “Thief” is well worth an order or visit to the store. “The Unknown” is a nice mix between multiple songs on the album, incorporating themes and lyrics from songs like “It Comes Back To You” and “Dream.” “Second Chance” has an amazing message sung through its lyrics and “Release” delivers a subtle and sweet acoustic performance. With many songs on this album, actually listening to the album will pack much more of a powerful punch than simply hearing the music. This album is a great follow up to their debut album, despite the reinvention of their music. Change can absolutely be a good thing and it has paid off for the members of Imagine Dragons.

Spring into fashion this season BY ALEXA FERRAGINE Lifestyles Editor
The smell of budding flowers and fresh cut grass over power the incoming spring season. New fashion trends and styles will be shortly appearing in store windows. Flannel seems to be sticking around and transitioning from winter looks to spring looks.
CREATIVE COMMONS
In order to wear a flannel and turn it into a spring, look pair it with a lighter shade of jeans. The ripped jeans looks seems to be a popular hit for spring preview lines. Ripped jeans have been an on and off trend. However, in the spring they are a little easier to work with and pull off. Even though it can still be a little colder in the spring jeans are the perfect thing to pair with flats and a loose t-shirt. This is a perfect opportunity to wear a statement necklace with a plain white t-shirt. While the whether is getting warmer floral prints are still showing up on the runways. However the flowers have moved from tops to pants this spring season. High waisted jeans are also slowly leaving store windows and being replaced with the boyfriend jean style, which is a more relaxed fit. These jeans however, do not fit everyone’s body type. Boyfriend jeans can be very unflattering to different body types. Nordstrom.com has been showing a lot of tribal print pants for this 2015 spring season, and then pairing them
with casual flip flops. However, this trending look has either been a hit or miss considering this trend has not been this most popular with a lot of people. This spring keep an eye out for people taking accessory statements with bold hats and jewelry. Panama hats have been all over a lot of new spring fashion lines, be sure to not go crazy with your outfit if you want to keep you look casual while wearing a hat like that. Will these looks hit the streets this spring? Tweet us your thoughts @Loqwitter.

Calvin the Cavalier remains a mystery BY KATIE MUSKA Asst. Lifestyles Editor
Calvin the Cavalier, a figure at sporting events and activites on campus and is played by a Cabrini student. Their identity is a mystery. The spirited character’s alter ego has been hidden since this unnamed student took the job. It is through one of their many activities that this student acquired the job of mascot. Orlin Jesperson, assistant director of athletics and recreation in the Dixon Center gave this student the job. “He needed an extra mascot person,” our mascot said. “I was flip-flopping with one person who transferred so he just asked me and I was like sure why not.” This mystery student is a fairly recent addition to the list of students who have played this role. The current mascot has just started working in the position last semester. The new Cavalier has been the mascot for Homecoming, the women’s CSAC final game and Cabrini Day.

Of course, the job has its ups and downs—but at least it pays. “It’s definitely harder because you can’t talk, and you can’t really see out of the uniform so it’s kind of hard to see where you’re going and what you’re doing,” the student said. “It’s hot and sweaty and you feel very claustrophobic in there.” However, with the negatives come the positives. “It’s different and it’s fun because you’re supposed to be mysterious and no one’s supposed to know who you are,” the Cavalier said. “It’s fun to be the mascot, but it’s not fun to be in that costume.” The mystery student enjoys the interaction that the job entails, but describes it as difficult because althoughhe/ she are interacting, the person can’t actually talk. “I was nervous because I forgot you can’t talk,” they said. “The first thing I did was I talked by accident. It’s hard, especially when people try to talk to you and you can only shake your head yes or no and use your hands.” Whenever on the job, the mascot gets a person to shadow. This makes things easier because the shadow makes sure the mascot get where ever he/she needs to go without falling over or getting hurt. That is about all the help the student got, though. There was no training involved in this job. “They kind of just threw me in there,” the cavalier said. “I did it once in high school just for fun at a game. It’s cool because you can do things and nobody knows it’s you.” “No one was supposed to know,” the secret mascot said. “No one knew who I was at homecoming, and then at Cabrini Day everyone kind of figured out it was me based on how short I was and my mannerisms and stuff like that. Word travels fast at this school, so everyone kind of figured out.” However, not everyone knows. The biggest upcoming event for the mascot is going to be Accepted Students Day in April. Other than that, the mascot is usually used for campus-wide events and by request of different offices, like SEaL. Requests go through Orlin and then to the student. Another future event will be in the summer for Summer Orientation for the students so they can take pictures. “I think my favorite part is taking pictures with little kids, like at the homecoming dance, all the little kids came up to me and it was fun taking pictures with them,” the mascot said. “I think taking pictures with people is the
funniest part.” Aside from their double-life as Calvin the Cavalier, the mascot is involved with various other campus activities. Of course, we will not reveal anymore of his/her secrets.

Students have a hard time choosing a major BY ANESIA MEREDITH Asst. Copy Editor
Uncleared students are very much common among many colleges and universities. It is often common to see students drop their original major to pick up another one. Freshmen Ameer Ali, is categorized as an undeclared sophomore and transfer student from Delaware County Community College. Ali sought out to find himself a new major, after discovering that he had a very hard time deciding what he was interested in. Ali transferred to Cabrini after hearing from a friend that Cabrini is a school of opportunities and has one of the best communication departments. Once Ali found out about many of the several courses Cabrini has to offer, his vision became much more clear. Although Ali was able to transfer over, he was ineligible to be considered a sophomore. “I’m not sure why I was ineligible. I mean I was only one credit away from being a sophomore,’’ Ali said. Not only has Ali had to struggle with being uncleared, but also many other students have to endure the stress of being uncleared when they decide to switch over. The main issue is trying to get all of there classes together, but as a result, for most students end up having to cram classes together which becomes overwhelming for many. Sophomore Tayler Holmes also had to endure the process of switching her major after realizing it was very difficult to maintain the workload of classes and being a student-athlete. Holmes, who was then an exercise science major, decided to switch to psychology as it is something more suitable for her. “Exercise science was harder then I thought it
would be. Going into it as a major I wasn’t expecting it to be easy, but being an athlete made it even harder to keep up,” Tayler said. Holmes at the time was still an undeclared sophomore. Because Holmes switched her major, she then had to make up the credits and was still considered a freshman. Today, Holmes is now cleared to be a sophomore. Luckily she was able to make up all her credits plus more and has been putting her time management into good use. Another student Vanessa Charlot, who also decided to change her major from human resources, is now currently in the process of becoming a communication major. Charlot says she is happy that she decided to switch her major. “I switched because I thought human resource was boring and it didn’t really relate to me as much.” Charlot is currently taking many communication classes, such as video production and is enjoying the path that her major is taking her through. Students like Kenia Rodriguez came to Cabrini as a secondary education major, through the course of the school year last year. Kenia took a different turn and decided to focus her attention to the criminology field. “I decided to switch majors, because I came to Cabrini and found out that I just don’t want to be a teacher for the rest of my life,” Rodriguez said. “Plus being a cop was something I was looking forward to do since I was a kid.”

Students enjoy night out at Landmark Americana Tap and Grill BY AMY HELD Photo Editor
Landmark Americana Tap and Grill is a local bar on the Main Line that students recently got together at and enjoyed a night out at a new event, Main Line U. This new night offers students in the area “two dollar you-call-its” every Thursday night. The night would not have happened if it was not for senior communication major Nick Cipollone who put the whole event together. Cipollone works for a company called Center Stage Entertainment. This company puts together many of Landmark’s events and told him that he could put together this night for his fellow students. Students were involved in many different aspects of the night. Junior information science and technology major Frank Criniti was the DJ spinning the beats. Many students came to hear him and try to win prizes and enjoy the happy hour specials at the bar. Senior, exercise science major John Rudder said, “I definitely had a great time and loved that there was a dance floor with a Cabrini student as DJ.” “It turned out about what I expected but moving forward I’m really excited for future events and future DJs.” Cipollone said. “I loved the fact that it was basically all Cabrini students there,” Rudder said. These types of events help students wind down and relax after a long and hectic week of homework and studying and also enjoy the fun college should be outside of all of the work. “The hope is to eventually get a dueling DJ part here, so basically have a DJ from Villanova and possibly Rosemont and duel it out to see who can bring more people to the

event,” Cipollone said. This event can get bigger if other schools get involved in this night. It will be a great way to meet new people and network out to different schools in the area and even learn what other schools have to offer. Students had a very enjoyable time socializing, drinking and dancing the night away with their classmates and some alumni. The bar itself was very clean, safe, and they had great food and drink specials to offer students. The students are looking forward to more of these events and the hope is over time that the word will get out about how fun it was and more and more students to come out and get involved with the fun activities. @AMY_HELD93

Crazy weekend for house parties BY JADE MOTTO Staff Writer
Being 21 at Cabrini or even having a fake ID at this school, is all about the bar life, since Cabrini is so close to Manayunk and Philly. Manayunk has many bars for college kids with Cabrini, St. Joe’s, and Villanova being around the area. Some popular bars around that area are; Mad River, Old Eagle Tavern, and Kildare’s. Some popular bars in Philly are; Howl at the Moon and Piano Bar. Philly is less college kids and more all ages. This weekend a lot of students attended Mad River for one of a friend’s open bar. Students called in to get an open bar but you can also email if you go on their website. It was $20 for open bar from 10 p.m. until two in the morning, which is also closing time. The place was packed with college kids and many Cabrini students. Students get carded at the door and a bracelet once they pay for whatever party they are attending. The place was very spacey with three large rooms and music playing in each one along with three bars as well. They also were doing happy hour from nine p.m. to 11 p.m. if students are not there for an open bar. $1 for Coors Light and $2 for mixed
drinks, which is the best happy hour deal in the city. Mad River is also holding a Winter Edition Riverpalooza for College students all over. Many bands come to this event and will be playing all through out day. Heated tents, live music and great specials, cannot beat that. Tickets go very quick, so get them while there hot Cabrini! For more info sign on to Mad River’s website. The party life at Cabrini is also fun though. When I do not feel like spending money or want to pregame somewhere to spend less money at the bar, I usually cab over to Conshocken, where a lot of the Cabrini parties are held. House parties at Cabrini are usually held in the basements if they are big, where music is bumping 24/7. If it is just together most likely will be throughout the house. Sports teams usually throw the parties; the lacrosse house, or tennis house, or even field hockey house depending when they are off-season. Since we go to such a small school, word usually travels fast about parties and are whole school ends up showing up at one house by the end of the night. This weekend was a crazy one for house parties. A party was held at a house in Conshy, where random kids showed up and started talking shit to some Cabrini Students. Cabrini did not back down and stood up
for themselves. The random kids ended up swinging at a Cabrini student. After that all Cabrini kids jumped in and stood up for their friend. Once it got a little out of hand, some other Cabrini students broke it up, and everything was okay. “I like Cabrini parties because everyone is friendly and no one feels unwanted. Each social group hangs out and everyone's knows everyone. There about as big as a high school party since we are such a small school. I never not had anyone to talk to at a party or felt unwanted, because even if you do not know anymore, everyone will always include you in playing games or even on conversation topics, Junior, Marissa May said “You just have to remember that you have to make the best out of these parties, so you have to be outgoing and chill to have fun because we go to a school that's so small and shit. If you do anything that you think you will regret the next morning just do not do it, because we go to such a small school that everyone will know what you did and will for sure being talking about it the next morning”. @MOTTOJADE

NBA season headlines at the break game, 7.3 assists per game, 5.6 rebounds per game and 1.7 steals per game. Howard’s Point of View
BY HOWARD BLAKE III AND KEVIN MOYTLETT Sports Editor and Asst. Sports Editor
Kevin’s Point of View The NBA is having an unusual, crazy, record-breaking season. There have been many surprise teams and disappointing teams. What a first half of the season it has been. The Atlanta Hawks and the Golden State Warriors are first in their respectable conferences. To call the eastern conference respectable might be stretch considering that the seventh and eighth seeds are eight games under a .500 winning percentage. What are the Atlanta Hawks doing in first place over teams who have superstars like LeBron James, Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade? The Atlanta Hawks play team basketball that is why. Although the Hawks do not have a superstar they have four all-stars this year; Kyle Korver, Jeff Teague, Al Horford and Paul Millsap. A little less surprising is that Golden State is in first place in the Western Conference. Although I do not think most people would have thought the Warriors would be 42-9 at the all-star break. Also with the West being such a deep conference for so long it just looks weird to see the Warriors at the top. It has been a few years in the making for this great year they are having. Each of the past three years the Warriors have improved. Mostly to the maturation of their young sharp shooters Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson who most refer to by their nickname the “splash brothers.” Having players like Andre Iguodola, David Lee, Shaun Livingston and Marreese Speights come off the bench for you does not hurt either. Former Head Coach Marc Jackson deserves a lot of credit for bringing a defensive mindset to this team. The scorers were already in place and Jackson brought a toughness to this team that is playing dividends now with the current team. Head coach Steve Kerr also deserves his own credit for taking this
Now that we have entered the halfway point of the NBA regular season, we have seen teams shape themselves into contenders and individual players emerge into MVP candidates thus far. The Golden State Warriors have the NBA’s best record at 42-9 and possibly the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in Stephen Curry heading into the All-Star break. With three-point line. early injuries to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook the Thunder found themselves out of the playoff race early. However, with their two stars healthy, they have done their part to get themselves just one game out of the eighth seed for the playoffs. This team is so dangerous and if they find a way to secure the last spot in the playoffs, whoever finishes with the first seed will not be too happy having to face KD and Westbrook in the first round. All in all it has been a great start to the season and it will be interesting to see if teams can hold on to their spots for the remainder of the season.
team to the next level. We cannot talk about the NBA and not talk about LeBron James and his team at least a little bit. He is the face of the NBA and the best player on the planet. The latest big three and the Cleveland Cavaliers got off to a very slow start and whispers of the players problems with Head Coach David Blatt started. However the Cavs have been the hottest team in the east over the past month winning 14 of their last 16 games. The Cavs still have to work on chemistry and defense if they want to succeed in the playoffs. Talent can only get you so far. The joke of the NBA so far this season has to be the New York Knicks. They have the worst record in the league and yet have “superstar” Carmelo Anthony. Melo is putting up some good statistics as usual but I know that any team that has LeBron, Durant, Paul, etc. would not have only 10 wins at the all-star break no matter who was on their team. The Knicks do not have enough talent to have a winning team but Melo should take charge and win a few more games. Melo plans to shut it down for the second half of the year because well there is no point to him risking his health to play a meaningless second half of the year. The front runners for MVP this season are the Warriors point guard Stephen Curry and the Rockets shooting guard James Harden. Curry and Harden are shooting the lights out this season. Curry is averaging 23.6 points per game, 7.9 assists per game, 4.7 rebounds per game and 2.2 steals per game. Harden is averaging 27.4 points per game, 6.8 assists per game, 5.7 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game. Harden probably has the slight edge at this point in statistics but Curry’s team does have the best record in the NBA so that helps. The dark horse for MVP is LeBron James, LeBron is once again putting up great stats as usual. If he did not do this so consistently every year then people would be talking about his stats so much more. Cavaliers forward LeBron James and Bulls guard Tony Snell. He is averaging 25.9 points per

Sugden lends helping hand as new assistant S.I.D
BY ABBIE KEEFE Asst. News Editor
Brian Sugden is the man behind the scenes. Sugden, assistant sports information director, covers the school’s games and athletic events for the athletic department’s website. Sugden works very closely with Dave Howell, the director of sports information, as his assistant. He attended Cabrini, studied communication, ran cross country and was involved in the school’s lacrosse club, prior to his graduation in 2013. He met Howell at his job as a front desk staff member while still attending college, contacted the director after graduation and eventually got the position, only two months later. “One day I helped him actually do stats because his assistant wasn’t there,” Sugden said. “I cover a bunch of different sports. Softball is coming up so that is going to be one of my teams.” “When he covers these events, he writes the pregame and postgame stories, as well as “the game day stats so when you’re online and you’re clicking the live stats feed, that is me,” Sugden said. He is also the voice behind the sports weekend video reviews and is grateful for all the skills he
has learned in video production from Cathy Yungmann, when he was involved in LOQation in college. During the current basketball season, Sugden sits with Howell on the sidelines and is the “playby-play guy.” “I’ll call out what I see and then he’ll enter it in the computer. It is a two-man job,” Sugden said. On top of the stories that he writes, he covers softball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, as well as swimming. After his work, Howell oversees what has been done, approves it, then Sugden sends it out. Sugden is also responsible for conatcting other colleges sports infromation directors. When Sugden is not dedicating time to the athletic department in his part time position, he is busy as a building supervisor as another part time job at the school. Here he looks after the front desk staff, the lifeguards, the fitness center staff as well as opening and closing the building, along with three other building supervisors. Aside from these two positions, he also had another part time job in catering, prior to his two and a half years while working at the college. On a daily basis, he never knows exactly what exciting new things his job will offer. “Today, I

The Cavs defeated Immaculata and remained unbeaten in the CSAC while notching their 15th consecutive win, topping Immaculata by one point 6564. The Cavaliers improved to 21-3 on the season and a perfect 15-0 in the CSAC. The Cavs are in sole control of first place, therefore, they will play their tournament games at Nerney Field House. Amber Keys played a huge part this time around leaving the game with a career high 33 points and adding 13 rebounds. Sophomore Tayler Holmes
put up a pair of three pointers to and eventually ended with 11 points and six boards. “The odds are in our favor so far, but you never know,” Holmes said. “Coach just wants us to get the win and play well as a team.” Megan Decker had nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Immaculata did not give up easy as they fought back and scored the final five points of the first half. This left the game at 29-27 at halftime. The Cavaliers are known for their defensive pressure and for the opening of the second half they were successful in slowing down Immaculata. The Lady Cavs kept their lead but the
Immaculata kept the game close. Junior Dana Peterson found Keys for a bucket with 60 seconds left to play. Immaculata had three possessions giving them a chance to gain the lead. However, Cabrini’s defense stood firm and allowed them to steal the win. The Cavaliers have worked hard throughout the season to gain the number one seed in the conference. Seniors Amber Keys and Megan Decker both have been great statistical leaders for this team. Keys is first on the team in points with 17.1 per game and first in rebounds with 9.8. Decker ranks second behind Keys
with 9.9 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game. They also had great help by both sophomores Renee Oliver and Tayler Holmes. With a deep roster, the Cavs rely on their teamwork as only one player averages double figure scoring. The rest of the scoring responsibilities are spread throughout the team, which shows their unselfishness. However, the Lady Cavs will rely on the leadership and experience of their seniors, Keys and Decker, for the rest of the season heading into the CSAC tournament.

Senior Scott Hunt looks at his 17-year journey
CABRINIATHLETICS.COM
Senior Scott Hunt and his family posing for a picture after a meet. Hunt has swam for 17 years. BY KATE MUSKA Asst. Lifestyles Editor
Scott Hunt has been swimming competitively for 17 years; you could say it is an important part of his life. Hunt, who is a senior English major, has finished up his third and final year on Cabrini’s swim team. “My parents have been my biggest source of support. 17 years is a long time to spend driving to swim practices and going
to meets, but my parents did it with a smile every time,” Hunt said. “My parents taught me that humility, diligence and a sense of humor are more important than any trophy or record.” Hunt started his athletic career at the age of five. He began at Lower Merion Aquatic Club. “I swam the 25-meter freestyle and have not looked back since,” Hunt said. He stayed at that club until sixth grade, when he switched to
Suburban Swim Club in Newton Square. When Hunt hit high school, he swam for the varsity team at Archbishop Carroll High School through all four years. At Carroll, he qualified for the state team three years in a row. “My twin brother Bradley always had my back, both in and outside the pool,” Hunt said. “He’s my best friend and the person I look up to the most. Bradley has taught me that people who want to see me fail are irrelevant.”
Upon entering Cabrini as a freshman, Hunt made the decision not to swim. “I wanted to adjust to college life. I had no idea what I wanted to do academically,” he said. “I have to admit, I really missed swimming.” Head Coach Cindy Ikeler played a big part in Hunt’s return to the sport. When Ikeler started working at Cabrini, Hunt was in his sophomore year. The two had a conversation about Ikeler’s vision for the team and Hunt was encouraged into rejoining the sport. “I am happy to say it was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Hunt said. “She and her fellow coaches, Tim, Kevin, Chris and Bre, have built this program from the ground up.” As for the 2014-2015 season, Hunt has nothing but positive words. His usual events are the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. “Veterans and fresh faces alike added to the strength of this team. We are really building something special,” Hunt said. “Every year we are improving by leaps and bounds. There is nothing that this team cannot overcome.” Hunt stressed how important it is to remember that being a collegiate athlete is a privilege. The value of his team is something Hunt also greatly emphasizes.
Being a member of such a supportive team that is always there for one another makes the bad races worth it. “There are many different personalities on this team. Our variety is what makes us so unique,” Hunt said. “The camaraderie of this team is something I have always enjoyed and will deeply miss.” In addition to swimming, Hunt has a part-time job at the Haverford YMCA. He is also a member of the editorial staff for Cabrini’s literary magazine, Woodcrest, which is run by the English department. Hunt and the rest of the Woodcrest staff members work to cultivate an aesthetic culture on the campus. As a senior, Hunt has left some parting words of wisdom for his teammates he will soon be leaving behind. “Always say thank you to your coaches. Be grateful for the compliments, and listen to the critiques. It will shape you into not only a better swimmer, but the best person you can be,” Hunt said. “Continue to build the foundation for this team and nothing will stand in your way

The men’s basketball team is now ranked No.1 in the CSAC conference. BY DELEON FLOYD Staff Writer
Men’s basketball extended their streak with a fifth win over Cairn University, placing a 101-54 victory. Saturday, Feb. 14, men’s basketball made a stamp in the conference with a huge 47 point victory in Cairn University’s gym. Almost close to another triple double, senior guard Aaron Walton-Moss set a career high 18 rebounds and to go along with 17 points. Vinny Walls, senior guard, also placed 17 points in the box score, which helped the team increase their lead during the game. With only 15 minutes of play, sopho-
more, Ryan Charity contributed 10 points and four rebounds. Three other sophomores, Green, Monroe and Paden tallied 12 points apiece combining for 15 rebounds. Cabrini took an early jump start in the beginning of the first half leading 15-5, later increasing the lead into 20 points several minutes later. A buzzer beater shot from Aaron Walton-Moss set the team ahead 50-30 before heading into the locker room for half-time. The men’s basketball team connected with most of their field goals in the second half. On the defensive end of the floor the team allowed few points on their end. After men’s basketball faces Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday, it will conclude
Senior guards Vinny Walls and Aaron Walton-Moss combined for 34 points in the win over Cairn University. the regular season and open up play-offs. Junior guard Ace Henry, has high hopes for the post season. “As the season went on we added more pieces that we were missing,” Henry said. “If we all come together we will have a chance to go far, we are on a roll now and we have to continue it. Right now we have to continue to go hard in practice and build team chemistry. I am very excited for the post season.” As of now Cabrini, is hoping to finish as a number one seed in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. This will be Cabrini’s six straight run for a conference championship title. “What I know about the rivalries in
the CSAC is that Gwynedd is our biggest rivals, they are always number two, and we are always number one,” Kris Knight, senior business major, said. “Even though we always beat them when we are hosting, I feel as though this year Gwynedd Mercy men’s team could surprise us for the championship. Lets just hope the team pulls it together and wins the next few games so we can host, have another CSAC championship. Plus it is my senior year I need us to win.”

Dr.McGauley plays dual role as professor and triathlete BY LILLIAN HURLEY Staff Writer
When she is not teaching Science and Society or in the lab, this professor is training for Ironman at Lake Placid. Dr. Cynthia McGauley is a chemistry professor in the Iadarola Center. Or at least this is how her students view her. Little do students know, McGauley is currently training for the July Ironman. This triathlon will consist of swimming two loops around Mirror Lake, a 56 mile bike ride and end with a 26.2 mile run. But do not be nervous for McGauley, this is not her first and probably not her last triathlon. Since high school she has been considered and athlete. However it was not until about five years ago when her fitness game really picked up, according to McGauley. “I participate and train in triath-
lons, but I have done marathons and endurance swimming too,” McGauley said. She also swam around Key West last summer. It is not an easy task to participate in these extremely physical demanding events and McGauley is well aware of how to prepare for them. She knows what she needs to do to be prepared for each event. McGauley makes sure that she works out at least six times a week. According to her schedule she rides her bike two to three times a week. She will run two to three times in a week, along with swimming two to three times a week. Then she focuses on her core and strengthening two to three times a week. She will usually train by herself to get the best results, but sometimes working out with others can be more beneficial. “I get my longer workouts done with friends on the weekends,” McGauley said.
But to balance training with work is not an easy task. In order to get her workouts completed during her busy schedule she hits the gym in the morning before work. This gives her a jump start on her day. As much as she loves training, McGauley loves her job as a professor. She says that each day is something different and she especially likes the teaching component. “The students are awesome” McGauley said. With this busy schedule McGauley gives a lot of credit to her support team, her family. “My husband Jim who is an undergrad at Cabrini and my six children Bridget, Jimmy, Sean, Ryan, Matt, and Jill support me in everything I do and I love them very much,” McGauley said.
