By Sophia Gerner Editor-in-Chief Cabrini’s fall athletes earned the university four Atlantic East Conference championships all within a few hours. This past Saturday, Cabrini University’s Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey and Volleyball teams all came out in triumphed with four new trophies to bring home. It was an exciting couple of hours for the Cavalier fans as most sat on the bleachers at one game while live-streaming another game, or two, to check in on the other teams. Chris Fonte, admissions counselor, said when he saw what Cabrini had accomplished on Saturday, “flashbacks from 2015 came to mind from the last sweep. It made me feel old realizing that I was a sophomore the last time this has happened.” Fonte said he was really happy for all the coaches and staff. “For someone who has worked in college athletics I know all the behind the scenes work that goes into the season; so credit to Kate Corcoran and all of her staff for this,” Fonte said. “Most importantly, I thought about the students. I remember campus just being wild in 2015 and I’m so glad these students got to experience this.” Sophomore Maggie Hoban was one fan who

switched between all four championship games via live stream to make sure to keep tabs on not only her roommate but on all of her friends as well. Hoban said when Cabrini won all four games she felt proud and started jumping, screaming and hugging her friends who shared this moment with her. She said, “Since I have a personal connection to multiple people on the field hockey team and both Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams, I felt even more excited for them especially since I have seen them work so hard over the past few weeks for this very moment.” Billy Warren, senior basketball player, said, “Realizing that Cabrini was about to go fourfor-four was a great felling. It was nice to see everyone from the school come out and show support to each other.” Warren said he was excited for the players because, “watching these athletes work their butts off all year and then seeing them achieve their goals is amazing to see.” He said although he was happy for everyone who won and wanted to celebrate their victories, the pressure is now on for him as a Cabrini basketball player because, “now the basketball teams have to win next since everyone else did.”

Warren said when he called some of the players to congratulate them on their win, he could see the joy they had for what they just accomplished and it motivates him to want his team to win even more. Men’s Soccer defeated Neumann University at Cabrini’s home field, with a 4-0 win. This victory brought with it Men’s Soccer’s first conference title since 2017 and its 11th title overall. No. 2 seed, Women’s Soccer, secured their third conference title in four seasons after beating No. 1 seed, Marywood University, with a winning penalty kick making a final score of 1-0. Volleyball won at home 3-1 over Marymount University earning the team their first conference championship since 2017 and ninth overall. The Cavaliers were on the edge of their seats as Field Hockey shot their winning goal in double overtime against St. Mary’s College of Maryland resulting in a 2-1 victory. This is Field Hockey’s first championship since 2016 and fifth championship in Field Hockey program history.

Men’s soccer wins it all in the Alantic East Conference By Pryce Jamison Lifestyles Editor Cabrini has gone four-for-four in the Atlantic East Conference championship wins on Saturday; men’s soccer had a presence in this feat that also presented Cabrini with a 4-0 victory over Neumann University.

an illness that put assistant coach, Tyler Bond, in his spot to take care of business. With all the pressure on Bond and the rest of the team, the ‘next man up’ mentality had to resonate whether it relates to players or coaches as they knew what was at stake.

hugs between players and the group photos of players holding the championship banner and the trophy, even made the ones watching from the crowd feel like they were a part of the family for this sentimental moment.

It capped off the successful 13-4-2 season that the squad have been having so far as they performed well in the conference winning the trophy that they came up short on last time they were on that stage. Two years ago Cabrini lost to Immaculata, in the AEC championship game which was definitely something that resonated with the team up to this point.

Sophomore Nolan Holloway opened it up with the first goal of the day, which was eventually followed up by another score by senior Tyler Jankowski to put the Cavs up 2-0 at the half with the electric plays from the two midfielders.

“It’s crazy how last year during my freshman year, we didn’t have a season because of the strong presence of the pandemic, but in a way that sort of helped us step back, focus on our craft as a program and find a identity to get us ready to compete at a very high level,” sophomore Kevin Davis said. “To see me now contributing to a championship team and taking it all in on a daily basis, it doesn’t take long to see how the energy that’s transferred from every single player to the other, is special.”

A strong defensive outing took place through the course of action as Cabrini scored two goals in each half during the 1 o’clock afternoon match. Teammate chemistry and the trust in one another is what truly seemed to set this year apart to get the talented bunch to the championship level. The annual awards have also been released for AEC men’s soccer Tuesday morning as Cabrini had strong representation, filling the slots of 3 of the 4 awards with Nick Lobiondo winning offensive player of the year, Josh Cunningham winning defensive player of the year and the coaching staff receiving the coaching staff of the year award which was led by Rob Dallas. Cunningham, who also won tournament MVP, had some words about his role as captain this year when helping propel the guys upward through good and bad times. “To think that at one point I was considering not attending Cabrini when on my college soccer search, to now being with the guys that I love and motivate as I find happiness in being the glue guy amongst the guys, is quite surreal,” the senior defender said. “When you’re around people you enjoy, you have more of a desire to fight for them, and as nice as individual awards may seem, none of us can truly receive those without the overall team achievements and effort.” Going into the game, head coach, Rob Dallas, was out due to Graphics and photos by Brian Manley

Junior forward, Matt Duddy, smoothly tossed an assist over to Lobiondo for the third goal and the assists didn’t stop there as the final goal to ice the match was brought to you by senior midfielder, Christian Rafter, off of a Cunningham assist. Sophomore goalkeeper, MJ Graham, put the exclamation mark on the victory as he had a superhuman save on a Neumann scoring attempt, which got the packed home crowd fired up. Things were even getting chippy like one would expect in a championship game in which Lobiondo talked about how the team knew they had to handle scenarios logically, in which unaffordable retaliation could have occurred at any moment. “Keeping our composure and keeping in mind how hard we worked to get to where we are in the first place was important when not lashing back, because we’re fighting for something bigger, as we’ve been uplifting and bringing the best out of one another all season through even off the field bonding and trust,” Lobiondo said. Field hockey triumphs after double overtime; wins AEC championship By Cierra Southard News Editor

Cabrini’s field hockey team returned to the Atlantic East Conference Tournament this year, this time with a major victory bringing home the championship trophy! On Nov. 6, the Cavaliers walked off the field at St. Mary’s College of Maryland as Atlantic East champions. The Cavaliers scored a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the topseeded Seahawks. This win marks the fifth championship in Cabrini’s field hockey program history and its first title since 2016. The blue and white fell short in the first few minutes of the game after St. Mary’s found the back of the cage only three minutes into the championship game. Trailing 1-0 early in the game, the Cav’s defense remained strong, holding St. Mary’s to only two first-half shots and one penalty corner. However, the Cavaliers weren’t able to take advantage on the offensive side of the pitch, as only one of its four first-half shot attempts found the net. Now the game is tied, the Cavs are still in it. Both teams felt the pressure to gain an advantage on the scoreboard as the teams had a combined 10 shots and five penalty corners in the final 15-minute period. Yet, the score remained tied and the game went into its first overtime period. St. Mary’s was able to offensively create several scoring attempts in the first overtime 10 minute period, however, freshman Sara Hussey, made a 64th-minute defensive save. Freshman goaltender, Courtney Keith, also had her fair share of defensive saves as in the 67th-minute keeping the game tied with a huge stop. Still tied at the end of overtime, the Cavaliers entered a second extra period where the blue and white offensively showed up. Senior Allison Martin forced a pair of St. Mary’s saves in the first minute and a half of the period. Cabrini held onto its pressure, ultimately firing five shots in the second extra period. After multiple attempted shots on goal, the game seemed like it was set to end on a shootout. A spark ignited through the blue and white and with only 47 seconds left on the game clock, the game-winning shot was made. Sophomore midfielder, Caroline Gallagher, hit the ball into the center of the goal area, where it found freshman midfielder, Adrianna Jones, on the far post to score the winning goal.

Gallagher led the Cavaliers with eight of their 17 total shots, Jones added three, while Martin and junior midfielder, Olivia Sims, both had two each. Keith was rewarded and named most valuable player after recording three saves in the game. Maura Tumelty, forward junior, said “It was a really rewarding experience to win the championship because we had worked so hard all season and went through many days that felt like torture.” She said that it was “awesome” to win the conference since their season could not happen last year due to COVID-19. The Cavaliers were able to round out their season 11-8 and 4-1 in the Atlantic East Conference.

Women’s soccer wins second consecutive Atlantic East championship By Rigo Campos-Sanchez Perspectives Editor In an away win in Scranton, PA, a winning penalty kick against the Marywood Pacers gave Cabrini’s women’s soccer team the Atlantic East Conference championship. After losing an entire season last year due to COVID-19, it only took the women eight wins, five losses and three ties to arrive at the playoffs. None of this stopped junior defender, Rebekah Cunningham, from scoring the decisive goal in the fifth round of penalty kicks which would give Cabrini’s women’s soccer team the victory. The team knows how it feels to beat the Pacers; yet, they also know the feeling of losing against them. They played them twice this year and lost a game against them out of the two in a conference game.

“Preparing for the game was mostly mental because Marywood was the only team that beat us in conference play. We all knew they got lucky at the conference. Yet, we were going to beat them when it really counted. I believe that we dominated most of the game. In the end, we came out on top,” Cunningham said. Sophomore striker, Ella Marrollo, and junior defender, Jamie Falgie, also scored successful shots that saw the back of the net during the second and third rounds of PKs. From Sept. 10, 2005, to Nov. 6, 2021, they have a record of 10 wins, five losses and seven ties against the Pacers. “I wouldn’t say a conference rivalry exists. There is definitely some tension considering we always find Marywood in the championship game with us. I am sure they are looking for revenge each time we play them,” Maria Alexandrowicz, assistant coach, said. “It honestly feels unreal. The fact that we didn’t have a season last year just made the victory that much sweeter,” Jamie Falgie, defensive soccer player, said. “I’m so happy that the trophy was brought back home. Everyone worked so hard this season, winning the conference

was the cherry on top. I’m grateful to have finished my last year of soccer with this team,” Marleigh Davis, defensive soccer player, said. Winning the Atlantic East Conference automatically placed the team in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The women will be playing Christopher Newport University this upcoming Saturday at their campus in Virginia on Nov. 13, at 1 o’clock. If they win their game this Saturday, they will move to the second round of the NCAAs. As a graduating senior, Davis feels that the team will continue to win multiple championships after she graduates. “Cabrini women’s soccer has a history of winning championships. The future for Cabrini women’s soccer players will fit in the program very well. The coaching staff has been very successful in finding players that adapt to the team chemistry on and off the field,” Davis said. Davis wishes the best for the team and the incoming freshman for continuing seasons.
