Becoming a Production Scheduler This is a professional who usually works in a manufacturing industry and is responsible for scheduling manufacturing processes so the company can run efficiently and satisfy what their customers need. A production scheduler is the one who has the job to keep the process of production flowing smoothly. In order to become a production scheduler you may need to have a college degree but there are some companies that will promote from within the company to allow the workers on the production line to enter management positions. Other requirements may include having experience in an industrial production facility. When you accept this position, you will be responsible for the coordination of all aspects of production to meet the goals of the company. You will also have to keep the chain of supplies running effectively and efficiently. To be a production scheduler you should have good multitasking, organization, and communication skills. Although the company that you work for may promote from within the company having a four year degree is an advantage. Some of the degrees that can be useful and helpful in this position are chemistry, engineering, business, and other related topics. If a person has the talent for communication and organization, a company may hire someone with a fouryear degree in other fields. What the degree requirements would be depends on the company. For example, if the company were a chemical refinery they would look for a highly qualified chemist but if it were a factory that makes children’s toys the degree requirements would be less restrictive. If you have no experience as a production scheduler but have a four-year degree, you could apply for assistant positions in a manufacturing facility to get the skills that you need. In general, working as a scheduler you would need experience in manufacturing and sometimes that experience would need to be on specific production lines. Unless you have extensive manufacturing and industry experience you would most likely not be immediately put into a senior position but as an assistant first. Working as an assistant, you can build up your resume for better positions in the company. You can get experience by working in the company on the production line while getting your degree. Once you are working in a management position you should join a professional organization. They provide information about new developments in the manufacturing field like different approaches to working in this position, new software that can help with production scheduling, or new regulations that could impact their production schedules. As a production scheduler, you can use these tools for continuing education in order to stay current on the newest regulations and software.
