Becoming a Roofing Contractor and Job Details To become a roofing contractor the path to get there can vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Most jurisdictions will have some of the same basic requirements for licensing and training. You will generally have to seek training and then get your license. The process to get your license will involve filling out an application and paying a fee. Then you will take the contractor exam that is approved by your jurisdiction. Once you pass the exam and another other eligibility requirements needed you will get your license to become a roofing contractor. The first step that you should take is to check the laws in your state or jurisdiction. They are the laws that will tell you how much training you will need to secure the license. You can obtain this information by contacting the department of licensing and inspections in your jurisdiction or state. In regards to training most will require that you obtain hands-on experience in the field by working as a trainee for a roofing contractor that is licensed. Many trainees will continue to work with the licensed contractor after training because you will need a lot of experience to prepare for the licensing exam. The experience you get will also help prepare you to go out on your own and have your own business or work for a roofing company as a contractor. As you are training make sure that you are learning about the technical aspects of replacing and repairing roofs, along with the financial and business aspects. You will also be dealing with customers so you need to make sure that you have good communication skills. You will not only be dealing with customers but also suppliers and employees that work with you if you have your own business. When you submit your application to take the licensing exam you must follow the requirements for your jurisdiction for proving your experience and training working as a roofing trainee. You may also have to undergo a background and criminal record check. Once you have your license you will be the one that does the repair work on roofs for commercial buildings and homes. You may also be required to replace these roofs. If you work for a company, such as a construction firm, you may handle the major projects of installing roofs on housing projects or buildings that have just been constructed. As a roofing contractor you may work on residential roofs that have been damaged by storms or water leaks. The one drawback with being a roofing contractor is that you may not work year round as it depends on the weather. For example, if it is raining you may not be able to work.
