Carpenter Shop Tools—the Saws

Being a carpenter contractor, it is very important that they have all the right tools. If you were to visit a carpenter shop, one of the main tools that you would see would be the saws. Two of the main saws that they use include a table and miter saw. Each of these saws serves a different purpose.

Table saw This type of saw can make accurate long rip cuts in material from softwood planks, hardwood planks, particleboard, and sheets of plywood. Most table saws found in a carpenter shop weigh less than fifty pounds so if they go work on a job site it is very easy to take this saw with them. It is virtually impossible to rip-saw a board with any other type of tool unless they choose to use a hand rip-saw, which is much harder to work with. There is also the stationary table saw that weighs more than fifty pounds and would be used in the shop only. These types of table saws are generally bolted to the floor to keep them from sliding around when using.

The typical table saw has a powerful fifteen-amp, one hundred twenty-volt motor that can cut through almost any type of wood. With some of these carpenter shop table saws, you can get a vacuum cleaner port, which is used for pulling the sawdust away from the machine. It is advisable that you have this attachment to keep the sawdust from piling on the floor and on the machine.

With portable table saws, they usually have a ten-inch diameter blade with a carbide-tip. They also have an adjustable saw arbor that can range from a height of zero inches up to approximately three inches. Most carpenter contractors prefer to use a thin kerf blade. The reason is that it makes a thinner cut through the wood. This causes less waste and does not put as much stress on the motor.

Miter saw The type of cut that the miter saw makes is the staple cut of most carpenter shops. One thing that uses a miter cut is picture frames. Without their characteristic forty-five degree joints at the corners it would not look like a picture frame. In homes you will see mitered corners around baseboards, doors, and more. The basic design has a saw motor that is attached to guide rails.

The rails support the saw as it is pulled over the tool’s table. A typical miter saw has a fifteen-amp motor, a twelve inch crosscut capacity at a forty-five degree angle, ten-inch diameter blades, and a vertical cut capacity of approximately six inches. They generally weigh about fifty pounds to make them portable and have a maximum cutting thickness of three inches.
