Carpet Repair Methods The method in which to do carpet repair depends on the type of damage that has been done to the carpet. For frayed edges, stains, and burns there are spot fixes but for larger damage the damaged pieces may be replaced by using carpet remnants. In some instances carpet repair may be done by using liquid laundry detergent, scissors, and bleach. In order to know just which carpet repair method needs to be used you will need to survey the damage. Stains This is the most common problem homeowners have with their carpets. There are many different items you can find in a store to help get rid of stains but there are also several home remedies that you can try first. The best home products to use to help remove stains include detergent and water, and sometimes bleach. You need to make sure that whatever carpet repair method you use to get rid of stains does not make the stains worse by using improper repair techniques or the wrong substances. Fraying If you have fraying edges on your carpet you can do carpet repair by using a wool yarn that matches your carpet and an upholstery needle. To do the repair you just need to sew a seam next to the portion that is fraying so it can be stopped. Make your stitches as small as possible to help hide the seam. Using carpet remnants If the damage to the carpet is so deep that you cannot spot treat it you may have to use a remnant of carpet to do a carpet repair. There is no other method of repairing the carpet with this type of damage. Many times if it is a newer home there will be extra carpet remnants that the homeowner can have. These should be kept in case a repair is needed but if these are not available you may be able to cut a small piece of carpet from an inconspicuous place like in a closet or under the furniture to use for the repair. You may also be able to go to a carpet store and find a remnant that matches your carpet. If you do find a matching remnant you will need to cut out the piece from the remnant to replace the damaged carpet. To make the cuts use a utility knife. Take the remnant you cut out and place it in the hole you cut in the carpet. To hold it to the carpet pad use carpet tape. Put something heavy on the carpet repair and let set overnight to adhere to the tape. Using this carpet repair method can save you from having to replace the entire carpet.
