Interior Painter—Creating a Textured Wall

When having an interior painter paint your walls one way to add personality is retexturing the walls. To create these walls there are a number of things that can be used like combs, sponges, and whisk brooms. There are also several ways in which an interior painter can accomplish this texture, one being to use drywall joint compound. Retexturing your walls is a messy project so the first thing that the interior painter will do is cover the floors with plastic sheets along with putting them on the windows and any other areas that you do not want to get dirty. The painter will apply an eighth inch thick coat of drywall joint compound to the walls you are texturing using a drywall knife. The painter will retexture the wall after the joint compound has dried completely, doing one wall at time. The texturing can be done by the interior painter using: • Small whisk broom—using this instrument will create the look of a grass cloth, which is cloth that has been woven from plant fibers. It will resemble linen. The painter will take the whisk broom and gently glide it down the wall to the bottom vertically and then starts over again at the top until the wall is done. • Thick paint or hair comb—the interior painter can drag either down the wall vertically to create even thick vertical lines or do in an overlapping “S” curve to give the walls a textured curvy line. • Thick-bristled brush—the painter will use this to create circles by leaving the brush in the same position and turning it around one time and then the brush will be wiped off before doing each circle. • Window squeegee—the painter will use this one to create vertical beading on your wall. When they use the squeegee it cuts groves that are few inches apart. To create this design the interior painter will start at the top of the wall and move it vertically down the wall. They can move the squeegee back and forth to create squiggly beads or create straight beads by using a steady hand and straight motion. It can also be used to create a woven look by drawing vertical lines and then dragging it horizontally to create boxes that look like woven fabric, • Sponges—the interior painter will blot the porous side of the sponge into the joint compound to allow the pores to create a new texture Before the interior painter can paint the walls they have to allow the walls to set and dry completely so not to mess up the design. Textured walls are good for bedroom, basement walls, and living areas. This article is penned by Lora Davis for San Diego Coastal Painting.
