Naval Architecture 101

Naval architecture is a field of engineering involving the designing, contraction and repair of boats, ships and other marine vehicles. The design of sea vessels is reliant on similar engineering expertise and technologies that are used offshore; except that a sea focus is necessary to ensure safety and effectiveness for sea operation

Naval architects Canberra or naval architects Brisbane can also be called marine engineers. Their practice also involves basic and applied research, design evaluations and calculations and design development during the entire life span of a marine vehicle. They also carry out the preliminary and detailed design of a vessel, its construction, testing, operations and maintenance.

The basis of naval architecture is in the Archimedes’’ principle. This states that the weight of a floating static body must be equal to the weight of the volume of water that the object displaces. Naval architects Perth or naval architects Fremantle are therefore tasked with predicting the size of the sea vessel which will be mandated by the sum of all possible weights. The architects must use experience-based formulas to enable them to calculate the necessary approximate values. These figures will help the engineer to predict an accurate depth of water required for the vessel to float.

A naval architect Canberra or naval architect Brisbane is also taught how to calculate the dynamic and static stability and the damage buoyancy of the naval vessel they’re engineering. Prior to undertaking any ship modifications like repair, modernization, or conversions, they should also be able to do ship design calculations. Naval architecture also involves forming damage control rules and safety regulations for the sea vessels. The marine engineers will mostly also participate in certification and approval of ship designs to ensure that they adhere to the nonstatutory and statutory requirements.

What are the skills necessary for a good naval architecture? The tasks that naval architects are involved in like Hydrodynamics, Structural Engineering, Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering among others are extremely complex. This is why a good architect must possess certain skill set to be capable of carrying out their tasks. Some of these skills include:

• Project management skills – building ships is perhaps the most complex engineering that any man can undertake. Understanding and managing engineering and electrical equipment can be extremely challenging. Your project is bound to fail if you don’t have the right project management skills.

• Critical thinking skills –a good naval engineer should be capable of looking at the big picture as opposed to specifics of a design or construction process. • Conceptualization – naval engineers are said to be more successful if they have creative minds. In addition to these, one must have the right naval architect training and should undertake a one year apprenticeship program with a ship design or ship building firm
