The inspiration for the clay ceramic plaque on the cover came from Avon Middle School students Paige Montague and Lauren Scully. Art teacher John Yagoda said, “I told them let’s think outside the box. They said could we use clay? Of course, I answered. The girls used the slab roller to roll the clay to create the background of the plaque. Then both Paige and Lauren began to roll coils, which they learned how to do in Art class. I demonstrated how they could make the letters with coils and they went from there. They made the letters, scratched and slipped them to the background and for the word “and” they used alphabet letter noodles pushed into the clay.

HONORABLE MENTION

The first firing goes to 2,200 degrees approximately, to bisque fire the clay (turn it white-to be able to apply the glaze.) They then chose the background color and then began to paint the letters to make them stand out from the background. The clay had to be fired a second time to change the painted glaze to a glass-like finish. The most fun part according to the girls was the making of the letters before they would crack and also the glazing of the plaque and to see the transformation from a lump of clay to the final result of the write and design plaque.

Mike Abraham presents to St. Joseph School students Mike Abraham of Nick Abraham Ford, Buick, GMC said he enjoys his classroom visits. “The educational value of Design an Ad has a great impact on the kids in school because they get to ask good questions about how to deisgn an ad for the dealership, along with following directions to include key ingredients to make their design look great.”

“This project helps the kids make a real-world connection with marketing and economy. We talk about how in a market with lots of options, businesses have to think of ways to set themselves apart. The kids then have to figure out the best way to display that in their ad. Designing the ads gives the students a chance to be creative. It can be a fun change from typical classroom activities, while still being beneficial. Kids always turn out ads that look great and I'm very proud of them” Kristin Kermes Teacher Students greatly benefited from the discussion. Mike’s presentation was very informative and aided in students’ ideas for creating their ads. Kristina Fabanich St. Joseph

Avon Middle School gets advice from Jim Firment “It was such a pleasure having Jim Firment come to our classroom this year. He played a budgeting game with students that they really enjoyed. It got them thinking, inquiring, and planning what kind of advertising is needed to run a successful business. He also challenged my students to help him make a new t-shirt for the dealership. Students are really taking pride in coming up with creative designs that they know others will want to wear!” Stacy Cislo, teacher Avon Middle School
