Lawrence Gipe's "Where We Were, and How We Got There"

Page 1

Lora Schlesinger Gallery is delighted to present Lawrence Gipe’s eighth solo exhibition with the gallery, Where We Were, and How We Got There. Where We Were, and How We Got There is a modular mural drawing, currently 60’ long. It is composed of a series of 10’ triptychs composed of images culled from the artist’s vast archive of clippings documenting modern technology, propaganda, and epic industrial landscapes. In the work, Gipe creates a panoramic vista of undulating scenes that engages the visual rhetoric of capitalism and nostalgia, addressing their intertwined relationship in visual culture. The drawing is based on the length and proportions of the Apocalypse Tapestry in Angers, France, an artwork that has always impressed Gipe with its scope, deep symbolism and tragic power. In the exhibition, Gipe will also exhibit a small series of oil paintings on panel entitled “Nocturne”, which depicts romantic, “idealized” notions of urban environments. Lawrence Gipe’s art ranges from painting, drawing, and installations that address the visual rhetoric of power, authoritarianism, and technology. Past notable exhibitions include the Los Angeles County Art Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Kunstverein Düsseldorf, Germany; BlumHelman Gallery, NYC; Alexander Gray Associates, NYC; Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, AZ (mid-career survey); Amerika-Haus, Berlin, Germany. He has been awarded two fellowship grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
