We are glad that you are here and know that you are welcomed by the entire Loras College community. We also want you to remember that while your day and visit to our Dubuque campus offers state-of-the-art facilities and beautiful Mississippi River vistas, the Duhawks’ greatest resource continues to be the people of Loras College.
Home of the Duhawks: Rock Bowl Stadium Renovated for the start of the 2005 season, the Rock Bowl is now a state-of-the-art facility with all of the history of the Rock Bowl and still in the same location – right in the center of the Loras campus. Field turf enables the Rock Bowl to not only house the football team, but also the Loras soccer teams and Wahlert Catholic High School football. With the high-tech video scoreboard, brand new bleacher seating for 3,500 spectators, a purple track and a fully equipped press box, the Rock Bowl will be the home of Loras football for many years to come.
The athletic department continues to strive to teach life lessons through participation in athletics and compete at the highest level. Nevertheless, our strength is in the people and the relationships you form because of Loras College. These relationships forged at Loras College over the past 174 years have led to traditions and experiences which have proven to be the foundation of the Duhawk way of life. Duhawks support Duhawks at all times. Whatever venue you are in during your visit, always be a Duhawk. Cheer for the Duhawks. Support the Duhawks. Mentor a Duhawk. Teach a Duhawk. Be a Duhawk! Thanks for coming and as always…Go Duhawks!

...and Duhawk Football On behalf of our entire coaching staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Loras College football season. As a Loras College alumnus, I am especially honored to be in the Rock Bowl on Saturday afternoon’s in the fall and lead this group of young men as head football coach. My memories of Loras College, my growth as a young man on this campus, and my deeply held convictions about what it means to be a Duhawk have all contributed to my return. I believe Loras College football has a bright future, and we continue our growth as a team in 2012. We have talented and hard-working Duhawks on this roster who understand the expectations we as a coaching staff have for them both on the football field and in the classroom. This understanding, commitment, and appetite for success provide us with a formula we believe will produce disciplined football - as well as graduates of Loras College we can all be proud of. Our student-athletes are proud to call themselves Duhawks and we expect to compete every day with intensity, toughness, consistency, commitment, poise, and enthusiasm. We’re glad you can experience these things with us today as a part of the Duhawk family. Enjoy the game! Sincerely,
Paul Mierkiewicz (’89) Head Football Coach

Football Academic Success Program At Loras College, academic success is the primary goal for our student-athletes and the support system provided for them is an essential part of their success in the classroom. This program is designed to provide specific, thorough and individualized resources to our athletes by utilizing the professional staff in place at Loras College – along with a team of dedicated tutors and committed professors from across campus. Like football, this program is a team effort. Kyle Klapatauskas, our academic success and retention coordinator, helps facilitate and organize tutors, special study sessions and lectures on how to achieve academic success. Helena Hall leads the Writing Center where our athletes go to receive help developing, writing and editing papers. In addition to these resources, we also offer a Math Lab staffed by the mathematics department faculty. The final piece of the team is made up of our Faculty Athletics Representatives – Deb Sazama and Hugh Graham. These two faculty members play a large role in building strong relationships with the entire faculty and provide a constant voice ensuring balance between academics and athletics. Football Academic Success Program • Study hours monitored by coaches and academic success professionals • Academic planner and instruction on how to use effectively • Regularly scheduled grade checks to identify problems quickly • Proactive player-coach meetings • Full access to the writing center, math lab, tutors, and supplemental instruction sessions

Chuck Yrigoyen IIAC Commissioner
Founded in 1923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions. The IIAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level. IIAC MISSION STATEMENT The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators. Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in self-discipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams. Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings. • Luther • Wartburg

Duhawk Football Team Takes Part In Earth Day Loras Helps Beautify Dubuque’s High Traffic Tourism Area Last weekend members of the Dubuque community hosted Earth Day Weekend Cleanup of the Port of Dubuque. Nearly 40 members of the Loras College Football team were present to volunteer at the event. The Duhawks put on their work gloves and vests for more than two hours on Saturday, April 21 to clean the Port of Dubuque, making sure to get in the bushes and close to the river’s edge. Other areas involved in the cleanup were the Ice Harbor Peninsula and river walk. The event was coordinated through the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium and the Keep Dubuque County Clean & Green Committee. Other sponsors included Sustainable Dubuque the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency.
In Loving Memory of Jack
61
Beginning in 2009, a young man by the name of John Patrick (Jack) Callahan III was to join the Loras College community and football team as he began his life as a young man outside of the walls of his Chicago, Illinois home. On the day of his 2009 graduation from Marist High School, Jack entered into eternal life following a seizure while he slept at his home. Jack was set to transition from his life as a RedHawk defensive lineman to that of a Duhawk defensive lineman. The Loras College community, football coaches and student-athletes continue to extend their prayers to Jack and the Callahan family in 2011. In recognition of his life - and Jack’s impact on those around him - no one on the Loras College football team will wear jersey number 61, his number at Marist High School, until the fall of 2013, when it would have been available again for someone else to wear. Rest in peace, John Patrick Callahan III.

Strength and Conditioning Josh Edwards
Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Defensive Coordinator A native of Pella, Iowa, Josh Edwards attended Central College in Pella (1999-2003), where he received his B.A. in exercise science and health promotion. While at Central he was a four-year member of the football team. He also served two years (2001-2003) as an intern in the strength and conditioning department. After graduation he worked one year (2003-2004) as the assistant strength coach under Jake Anderson. Edwards attended Winona State University in Winona, Minn., (2004-2006) to work on his master of science in educational leadership. While at Winona State he worked as the graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for two years. After finishing his schooling Edwards stayed at Winona State, changing roles to director of football strength and conditioning and defensive line coach (2006-2007). During the (2007-2008) school year Edwards was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was in charge of the men’s and women’s golf and tennis programs, and assisted with the football program. Presently, Edwards is in his fourth year as head strength and conditioning coach at Loras College and this spring was named the defensive coordinator for the Duhawks. He continues to have a role with the linebackers. Josh handles all the strength, conditioning, agility and nutritional development for all 22 athletic teams at Loras.

Mission: Under the direction of Loras’s full-time strength and conditioning coordinator, Josh Edwards, the Loras College strength and conditioning program supports the missions of both the Athletics Department and the College. In addition, Loras strength and conditioning is committed to helping student-athletes maximize their athletic potential while decreasing the chance for injury. Philosophy: The Loras College strength and conditioning program is in place to support the student-athlete by providing as many services as possible to help them achieve high levels of performance. This can be accomplished by applying five important principles: Ground-based movements; 3-dimensional movements; multiple joint movements; biomechanical and nutritional analyses; and acceleration and agility development.

Team Duhawk
Hello from TEAM DUHAWK! The Department of Athletics is now in the third year with Team Duhawk, and after two years, we continue to be blessed with the support of so many passionate fans and families. In 2012-13 we are excited to continue this tradition. Team Duhawk is the “team behind the teams.” Team Duhawk supports the mission of the Loras College Department of Athletics and provides our student-athletes with the resources they need to succeed in and out of the classroom. With the rising costs of travel and need to remain competitive in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division III, your support is needed. Your gift will provide opportunities for all student-athletes to train and compete at the highest levels, while also growing intellectually, spiritually, and personally. The first $25 of your gift will benefit the Team Duhawk General Athletic Fund, which supports all 22 varsity sports, the athletic training department, the spirit squad, and our athletic facilities. Any additional amount may be designated to an area of your choice. Thank you for your past support and for considering joining today! Sincerely,
Bob Quinn (’86) Director of Athletics P.S. You can follow the Duhawks, sign up for text message updates, and hear live broadcasts at www.duhawks.com. The Duhawks can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Welcome to Loras College Dear Duhawk Fans, Thank you for coming and welcome to Bierie Field at the Rock Bowl on the campus of Loras College.
