Team Duhawk

Hello From TEAM DUHAWK! We are embarking on a new academic and athletic year at Loras College. As Denise Udelhofen and I begin our second year of our administration of Duhawk Athletics, our goals remain the same. We want to teach our student-athletes to be great citizens and people through their involvement in athletics. We, also, always strive to compete at the highest level in the Iowa Conference and in the NCAA. While our season and year are new, our goals remain the same. Denise and I have worked extremely hard to rebrand what was once called the Duhawk Club. The Duhawk Club worked to financially benefit the entire department. In reorganizing this booster club, our discussions revolved around how we could move forward by garnering more support for our student-athletes and, at the same time, provide more benefits for our members. The true greatness of Loras College revolves around the people who make up this proud institution both past and present. We want to take advantage of these Duhawk relationships for our members. Our goal is to be more accessible, visible and provide more opportunity for members to celebrate and connect to Loras College Athletics. Denise, our coaching staff and I will be on the road to see and celebrate the Duhawks with our members. Consequently, we hope more alumni and friends of Loras College participate in this new program. We also hope that TEAM DUHAWK serves its members at a more beneficial level. Please consider becoming a member of TEAM DUHAWK! Serve the Duhawks, Support the Duhawks and Socialize with the Duhawks! As Always…GO Duhawks!

Chuck Yrigoyen IIAC Commissioner

Founded in 1923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions. The IIAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level.

IIAC MISSION STATEMENT

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators. Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in selfdiscipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams. Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings. Head Volleyball Coach Teresa Kehe Head Volleyball Coach Teresa Kehe, who was the head coach at Tripoli High School in Tripoli, Iowa, from 1983-2005, completed her sixth year at Loras College in the fall of 2011. Kehe’s overall record in six seasons at the helm is 115-94. She is coming off of an Iowa Conference regular season championship and also led the Duhawks to the 2008 Iowa Conference regular season and tournament championship. The 2008 season ended with the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance. She is 29-19 in the IIAC. “Duhawk volleyball provides our student athletes an opportunity to play a sport they love while also earning a quality education. As a team, we take great pride in maintaining a strong work ethic both on the court as well as in the classroom. In practice and during matches, we work hard to further develop our physical skills, build confidence, be enthusiastic, enhance our team chemistry, promote leadership and integrity, and strive for daily improvement. Enriching lives and making this a valuable learning experience is very important to us here at Loras College, therefore, we look forward to another memorable season coming up in 2012!” While at Tripoli, Kehe built a program from the ground up as the school’s first ever coach. In 2005 Tripoli won their third straight Iowa Class 1A state championship. Kehe led Tripoli to the state championship match in eight consecutive seasons, winning six titles. In addition to state championships, Kehe won 579 matches, 14 conference titles, 14 district championships and eight regional championships at the high school level. She was named State of Iowa Class 1A Coach of the Year six times and Northeast Iowa District Class 1A Coach of the Year seven times. In 2003, Kehe was State of Iowa National Coach of the Year Nominee and was selected by the National High School Coaches Association as a finalist for National Coach of the Year. Kehe was inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame in November 2011. Kehe graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1981 with a physical education degree. Coaching Staff Ashley Rogers Assistant Coach

Ashley Rogers completed her fourth season with Loras in 2010. A graduate of Wahlert High School and Wartburg College, Rogers is now a member of the coaching staff with the Duhawks after completing her degree in Business Administration (Marketing). During her playing career with the Knights, Rogers was a first team All-Iowa Conference selection each season from her middle hitter position. During her final season Rogers was the league MVP and a first team All-American. Her coaching experiences include numerous camps as well as youth teams. In early July, Rogers was named the Iowa Conference’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Rogers is also the head coach of the Loras softball team beginning with the 2010 season. “The Loras volleyball program stresses the importance of working hard, having fun and building relationships that will last far beyond the volleyball court. The commitment to excellence and teamwork has resulted in two Iowa Conference Championships in the past four seasons. It is very rewarding to work with such talented student-athletes with a passion for the game of volleyball.”

Jeff Bair

Assistant Coach Jeff Bair just completed his sixth year as Loras’ volunteer coach. He works full-time as a business consultant at Cottingham & Butler in Dubuque. Bair graduated from University of Northern Iowa in 1982 and earned his MBA from the University of Iowa in 1990. He has a 16-year-old daughter Allison. Regarding the volleyball program, Bair adds, “By earning the opportunity to compete in the conference tournament in five of the past six seasons, I feel the players participating in our program have proven they can succeed. Our players are dedicated to improving their skill level, increasing their desire to achieve and generating a positive and enthusiastic environment. I fully anticipate the progress we have made to continue because our players now understand the importance of a strong work ethic, maintaining confidence, working together and striving for common goals.” Loras College Volleyball

Duhawks ‘Think Pink’ in 2011 For the fourth consecutive season the Duhawk volleyball team dedicated one home game to “Think Pink” and raised awareness and money to fight breast cancer and improve women’s health. On October 11, 2011, Loras once again wore pink uniforms, handed out over three dozen prizes, hosted a 50/50 raffle and invited local health organizations to share their information at a health fair setup on the concourse level of the Athletic and Wellness Center. The 50/50 raffle along with the gate receipts generated just over $400, which was donated to the Maria House, a local women’s shelter, and the Visiting Nurses Association, to help fund mammogram screening for local women in need. Besides successfully promoting women’s health, the Duhawks earned a 3-0 victory over IIAC conference opponent Central College 25-17, 25-13, 26-24. Plans are already underway for the October 2012 Breast Cancer Awareness Month game and events.

Welcome to Loras College!

Athletic and Wellness Center

Dear Duhawk Fans, Welcome to the Loras College Athletic Department and the Loras College 2011 Volleyball Media Guide. The entire Loras community is thrilled that you are experiencing Loras College and “Duhawk Nation.” We hope you are able to visit Dubuque, Iowa, so you can experience our historic, beautiful and stateof-the-art facilities firsthand. Please always know that whether you visit for the first time or are able to see us regularly, you are welcomed by our athletic department, faculty and staff and, most importantly, our student body. The Loras College Athletic Department is constantly striving to extend the classroom for all of our student-athletes. Teachable moments occur for our coaches and studentathletes literally hundreds of times a day at practice and games. Traits like strength of character, sportsmanship, a solid work ethic and teamwork are taught and reinforced to produce Loras College alumni who will serve the world with integrity! As members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, another department goal is to compete at the highest level in all athletic venues. Our coaches are recruiting not only young men and women of character, but also athletically gifted and talented young people. It is my belief that you will see well-rounded student-athletes who demonstrate both integrity and athletic prowess as Duhawks. In the end, we hope you, like thousands before you, enjoy and experience the tradition and engaging personalities that make us all Duhawks. Thanks for your time and as always…Go Duhawks! Bob Quinn (’86) Director of Athletics

The construction of the 74,189 square-foot athletic and wellness facility began in June 2006 and opened in November 2007. This newest structural addition to our campus includes: — A basketball/volleyball arena with maximum traditional seating for 1,732 spectators. The same venue for concerts/speakers provides seating capacity between 2,289 and 2,913. — A two-level fitness center overlooking lower campus provides 9,500 square-feet of strength and conditioning and cardiovascular space. — The locker room facilities support Loras students, visitors and comprehensive student-athlete needs. In addition, there are coaches’ offices, a concessions/ retail area, hospitality area, an athletic training room and storage.
