Sea que desee disfrutar la playa, el bullicio del centro o en un lugar tranquilo lejos del todo, las opciones son variadas. Las festividades comienzan el sábado 14 de enero con la coronación por primera vez de ¡Miss Lord of the Wind! Después, desde el martes 17 hasta el domingo 22, ¡Cada noche es de fiesta! Ven a compartir la algarabía de los eventos ya sea en la playa durante los días del campeonato, o en los restaurantes durante la noche, ¡Hay actividades para todos los gustos!

Los verdaderos ganadores del evento Lord of the Wind son los miembros de la comunidad. Las localidades de Los Barriles, Buena Vista, El Cardonal y La Ribera, todas se benefician puesto que las ganancias se destinan para el Club Deportivo (organización sin fines de lucro que apoya y colecta fondos para los jóvenes a través de eventos deportivos) al igual que para Club Rotario Cabo del Este, quien opera el centro de tecnología, apoya a la clínica médica local, maneja proyectos para otras organizaciones sin fines de lucros que quieren ayudar en el área y dan ayuda a necesidades urgentes, por ejemplo, auxilio durante huracanes. And of course there’s kiteboarding! In the winter months the wind picks up and the sky fills with colorful kites pulling riders across the water sometimes at astounding speeds. Other times, the rider will launch themselves into the air and either simply fly for an apparent eternity or perform some gymnastic-like jump / twist / roll / kick / flip trick! Watching this never gets old! Which brings us back to the Lord of the Wind. It is an event not to be missed! As enjoyable as it is to watch kiteboarders every day, the performances during this competition are amazing!

The battle on the sea begins on January 18th as the Lord of the Wind kicks off its seventh annual Kiteboard competition. With over $20,000 in prize money plus the prestige of being crowned the Lord or Lady of the Wind at stake, many of the world’s best kiteboarders will be coming to Los Barriles to put on a display that is nothing short of AWESOME! Whether you’re a kiteboard enthusiast or not, the Lord of the Wind event is a great time!

La batalla en el mar comienza el 18 de Enero con Lord of the Wind (El Señor del Viento) celebrando su séptima competencia anual de kiteboarding. Se ofrecen $20,000 USD para el campeón, aparte de coronarse como El Señor o La Señora del Viento. La mayoría de los mejores practicantes de kiteboarding a nivel mundial llegarán a Los Barriles para demostrar sus increíbles habilidades para una competencia ¡UNICA! Sin importar si eres un entusiasta de este deporte o no, Lord of the Wind es algo que no puedes perderte.

Los Barriles, just 45 minutes north of the Los Cabos International Airport, is a wonderful place to visit, or as many have found, it is the perfect place to call home. Whether the goal is to excite the adrenaline or embrace serenity, Los Barriles and the East Cape has much to offer. The Sea of Cortez is well known as one of the best places in the world for sport fishing, and it is teaming with wildlife if the goal is to simply observe. Jacques Cousteau got it right when he likened the Sea of Cortez to “the world’s aquarium”. Aquatic activities include: snorkeling, SCUBA, and Stand up Paddle boarding.

Los Barriles, a 45 minutos al norte del Aeropuerto Internacional de Los Cabos, es un lugar maravilloso para visitar, o como muchos han descubierto, es un lugar perfecto para vivir. Si tu objetivo es sentir la adrenalina o buscar serenidad, Los Barriles y el Cabo del Este tienen mucho que ofrecer. El Mar de Cortés es conocido como uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para la pesca deportiva, además, gracias a su abundancia en diferentes tipos de peces, es un hermoso espectáculo a observar. Jacques Cousteau tenía razón al decir que el Mar de Cortés es “el acuario del mundo”.

On land, the activities include taking a quad out for a ride up an arroyo, riding a horse along the beach, and exploring the numerous trails on a mountain bike or on foot. For those wanting to simply embrace serenity, there are many spas and yoga studios to choose from. When the sun sets, the evening options are plentiful! There are a variety of fantastic restaurants and hotels. Whether the desire is to be on the beach, in the town center, or tucked away from it all in a quiet venue, the options are plenty.

Las actividades acuáticas incluyen: snorkeling, buceo y Stand Up Paddle. Fuera del agua se puede disfrutar manejando una cuatrimoto en el arroyo, montar a caballo en la playa o explorar la multitud de caminos montañosos, ya sea en bicicleta o a pie. Para aquellos que simplemente quieren disfrutar de un momento sereno, existen muchos Spas y estudios de yoga para escoger. Cuando atardece, las opciones son diversas ya que abundan los restaurantes y fabulosos hoteles.

This year the Lord of the Wind riders will also be competing for points toward the Mexican Freestyle Championship. The competition starts on Wednesday, January 18th and finishes on Sunday the 22nd. This year’s Boarder Cross / Slalom will feature obstacles that the competitors will jump over during the race. The course is set-up to be similar to the Boarder Cross Kiteboarding event scheduled in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The evening festivities, start on Saturday, January 14th with the crowning of the first ever Miss Lord of the Wind! Then from Tuesday the 17th thru Sunday the 22nd there is a party every night! Come join us on the beach during the days and/or in the restaurants in the evening. There is something for everyone!

The true winners of the Lord of the Wind are the local community. The towns of Los Barriles, Buena Vista, El Cardonal, and La Ribera all benefit from this event as it is a fundraiser for the local Club Deportivo, a non profit organization supporting local youth thru sports and the Rotary Club (Club Rotario Cabo Este). The Rotary Club operates the local technology center, supports the local health clinic, manages projects for other charities that want to help in the area but do not have a presence, and provides assistance for urgent needs such as hurricane relief.

Whether you’ve never been to a kiting event or have attended many, there are always questions about what the events actually are. So we thought it might be fun to give a brief description of this year’s events:

Ya sea que nunca hayas asistido a un evento de kitesurfing o hayas ido a varios, siempre hay dudas sobre lo que realmente son. Así que pensamos que sería divertido dar una breve descripción de los eventos de este año:

Each day will start with hydrofoil course racing. Course racing has buoys which the competitors must go around. They start on an up-wind (into the wind) tack, go around a buoy, head down- wind, as fast as they can, round another buoy then tack up-wind to the first buoy and race, down-wind to repeat the course. After the second rounding of both buoys, they leave all caution behind and cross the finish line as fast as possible. The contestants give new meaning to going faster than the wind – which they do – sometimes reaching double the wind speed.

Cada día se empieza con una Carrera de Hidroplano. El circuito tiene boyas que los competidores deben rodear. Comienzan en dirección contra el viento, rodean una boya, cambian a la dirección del viento lo más rápido posible, rodean otra boya para después volver contra el viento a la primera boya y compiten de nuevo a favor del viento, repitiendo el circuito. Después de la segunda ronda de ambas boyas, dejan atrás las precauciones y cruzan la meta lo más rápido que pueden. Los competidores le dan un nuevo significado a ir más rápido que el viento –lo cual en verdad hacen- e incluso llegan a superarlo.

Next up each day will be boarder-cross / slalom racing. The design of this course is the same design planned to be used in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. In short, this is a slalom race with jumps! The jumps get bigger through the course, the biggest of 5 feet tall is right before the finish line. This will be exciting to watch!

Lo siguiente cada día será el boarder-cross / carrera de eslalon. El diseño de este circuito es el mismo que se planeó para los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud 2018. En resumen, ¡Esta es una carrera de eslalon con brincos! Los saltos son cada vez más altos conforme avanzan en el circuito, los más altos llegan a los 1.5 metros de altura justo antes de llegar a la meta ¡Será emocionante verlo!

Freestyle has taken on a new look with Strapless Freestyle as described in Cynthia Brown’s article on page 30 of this magazine. The time elapsed photo on this page shows Cynthia flying through the air with the kite board on her feet BUT she is not attached to the board. She uses the wind to hold the board on her feet. If that isn’t amazing enough, strapless freestyle does all the turn-y, twisty, “how did they do that???” tricks with no physical attachment to the board!

El Estilo Libre ha cambiado con el Estilo libre sin correas tal como lo describe Cynthia Brown en su artículo en la página 30 de esta revista. La secuencia de fotos en esta página nos muestra a Cynthia volando en el aire con su tabla de kitesurfing en sus pies, PERO, ella no está sujeta a la tabla. Cynthia usa el mismo viento para mantener la tabla en sus pies. Si eso no es lo suficiente asombroso, el estilo libre sin correas hace que todo esté lleno de giros y vueltas; “¡¿Cómo hacen eso?!” ¡Trucos sin estar físicamente sujetos a la tabla!

Freestyle is full on tricks with either straps or boots to hold the contestants feet to the board. These tricks are so amazing that it is hard to even describe what these contestants can do. Just to describe one: We have a picture of Julien Kerneur (two time Lord of the Wind winner) holding onto his kite bar with one hand and riding the board with his other hand - legs in the air. How did he get in that position in the first place?!? Both styles of Freestyle are worth seeing actually jaw dropping worth seeing.

El Estilo Libre está lleno de trucos ya sea con correas o con botas para sujetar los pies del competidor a la tabla. Estos trucos son tan increíbles que es difícil el sólo hecho de tratar de explicar lo que los concursantes pueden hacer. Sólo para describir uno: tenemos una foto de Julien Kerneur (dos veces ganador de Lord of the Wind) sosteniéndose en su barra de parapeto con una sola mano y manejando la tabla con la otra mientras sus piernas están en el aire. ¡¿Cómo llegó a esa posición para empezar?! Vale la pena ver ambas disciplinas de estilo libre, de hecho, estamos seguros que lo dejará con el ojo cuadrado.

BIG Air is just that. How high can they jump? We aren’t talking about 10 feet or 20 feet, we are talking about 40 to 50 feet, and at times higher, depending on the winds. You will come back to see the Big Air events, year after year.

As awesome as it is to watch the kiteboarding competition, the Lord of the Wind event does not stop at the beach, and it most definitely doesn’t stop when the sun goes down! That’s when the parties start! The evening festivities begin on Saturday, January 14th with the crowning of the ﬁrst ever Miss Lord of the Wind! The crowning celebration will be hosted by the Van Wormer Resorts at Hotel Palmas de Cortez. Come join us as we reign in the first ever Miss Lord of the Wind! And then from Tuesday the 17th thru Sunday the 22nd there is a party every night!

Así como es de impresionante ver las competencias de kitesurf, Lord of the Wind no se limita a la playa y sin duda no se detiene cuando se pone el sol ¡Es entonces cuando comienzan las fiestas! Las fiestas vespertinas comienzan el sábado 14 de enero con la coronación de la primera¡ Miss Lord of the Wind! La coronación se realizará en Van Wormer Resorts en el Hotel Palmas de Cortez. Ven y únete a nosotros para brindar con la primera Miss Lord of the Wind. Después, a partir del martes 17 hasta el domingo 22 hay una fiesta cada noche.

Saturday the 21st: North Kite hosts a Beer Pong contest at ExotiKite Kiteboarding from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. And then it’s Beach Party Time! This year hosted by El Gecko by Playa Norte.

Los momentos mágicos en Baja California Sur

It could be the sea and its amazing aquatic life, the communities and the wonderful people within, or just how the sun and the moon rise out of the water. Or, maybe it is the combination of it all that makes Los Barriles and the communities of the East Cape an awesome place to visit or call home.

Podría ser el mar y su increíble vida acuática, las comunidades y su maravillosa gente, o simplemente cómo el sol y la luna salen del agua y se elevan. O, tal vez, es la combinación de todo eso lo que hace de Los Barriles y sus comunidades en Cabo del Este un lugar fabuloso para visitar o llamar hogar.

The first time we visited Los Barriles, the four of us, my wife, son, daughter and I had our first experience with Stand up Paddle boarding. We had rented the boards from ExotiKite Kiteboarding and Ian, one of the owners, had given us a quick intro with some sage advice: “If you’re going to fall… own it”. Well, I was embracing this and “owning it” … a lot. While the others had found their balance, I had not yet found my inner Zen to enable me to stand on water.

La primera vez que visitamos Los Barriles, mi esposa, hijos y yo, tuvimos nuestra primera experiencia con el Stand up Paddleboard (SUP). Rentamos las tablas en ExotiKite Kiteboarding e Ian, uno de los dueños, nos dio una introducción rápida con un sabio consejo: “Si te vas a caer… cáete bien”. Digamos que yo estaba aceptando ese “caerme bien”… demasiado. Mientras los otros habían encontrado su equilibrio, yo todavía no podía hallar mi zen interior para ser capaz de mantenerme parado sobre la tabla.

Off in the distance, our son, Ross, had found a school of mobula rays and was following them as they periodically soared out of the water in an apparent attempt to fly. After a while of this, the rays went from the sporadic jump to a jumping frenzy. Hundreds of them jumping out of the water, spinning and flipping looking like they’re having the time of their lives! It was like a in a mobula-ray-flash-mob dance!

A lo lejos, nuestro hijo Ross encontró un grupo de mantarrayas voladoras y las estaba siguiendo. Ellas periódicamente se elevaban sobre el agua en un aparente intento de volar. Después de un rato pasaron a un frenesí de saltos ¡Cientos de ellas brincando fuera del agua, girando y dando volteretas como si estuvieran pasando el mejor tiempo de sus vidas! ¡Era como un baile masivo de mantarrayas voladoras!

After a while, it settles down and Ross starts his way back toward us. At this point I am again searching for my inner Zen… ‘Breath’ and ‘Balance’ are the calm serene concepts that are running through my head as I am on my hands and knees preparing for my next attempt to stand up. “Dad! Stand up you wimp”! Hmmm, so much for Zen. OK, up on two feet I go! Keep standing… balance… breath…. What’s that underneath me???? Holy $#!+!!!! There are hundreds…. strike that… thousands of rays peacefully swimming under me! So Cool!!! They looked like an undulating carpet that went on for eternity…. In addition to the realization that this magical moment was again SO COOL, the other thing going thru my head was “Don’t fall… please don’t fall.”

Un rato más tarde se calmaron y Ross comenzó a nadar de regreso hacia nosotros. En este punto yo estaba de nuevo en la búsqueda de mi zen interior… “respira” y “equilíbrate” eran los tranquilos y serenos conceptos que pasaban por mi cabeza mientras estaba sosteniéndome con mis manos y mis rodillas, preparándome para mi siguiente intento de pararme. “¡Papá!, ¡párate, cobarde!” mmmm, demasiado para zen así que me paro. Mantente parado… equilibrio…respiración… ¡¿Qué es eso debajo de mí?! ¡WOW! Son cientos… ¡Miles de mantarrayas nadando tranquilamente debajo de mí! ¡Increíble! Se veían como una alfombra ondulante sin fin… aparte de darme cuenta otra vez de que ese mágico momento era MARAVILLOSO, la otra cosa que estaba pasando por mi mente era “no te caigas… por favor, no te caigas.”

Two days later, we’re looking at property… Two years later, my wife and I have made Los Barriles our home. Over these few years, the magical moments have been many, and one that I almost never miss when given the opportunity, is to swim with the rays! As amazing a sight as it was seeing the school of rays swim under me while on the SUP, it is an awesome experience to dive in and swim with them!

Dos días después, comenzamos a buscar una propiedad… dos años después, mi esposa y yo hicimos de Los Barriles nuestro hogar. A través de estos años, los momentos mágicos han sido muchos y uno que casi nunca me pierdo cuando tengo la oportunidad es el de nadar con mantarrayas. Aunque tuve una vista increíble cuando nadaron debajo de mi tabla, ¡Es una experiencia increíble bucear y nadar con ellas!

East Cape Community The Sea of Cortez never cease to amaze us. But the ‘magic’ of the area doesn’t stop at the edge of the water. The truly wonderful characteristic about the East Cape is the people. The communities around here are a remarkable fabric woven with the combination of the local nationals and foreign residents. And whether people come from the same area, the same country, or even speak the same language, there is a respect and desire to help.

La comunidad de Cabo del Este El Mar de Cortés nunca deja de impresionarme. Pero la “magia” de esa área no se detiene en la frontera del agua. La verdadera y maravillosa característica de Cabo del Este es su gente. Las comunidades de los alrededores son un tejido extraordinario que combina gente local y residentes extranjeros. Y aunque los habitantes vengan de la misma área, país, o incluso hable el mismo idioma, siempre hay respeto y deseo de ayudar.

Many of the locals have moved to the East Cape from other Mexican states for opportunities not previously available to them. But most have a long family history here. And the bonds between everyone are tight. It is common when asking “Do you know who can help with ….?” And the answer is “Yes! My brother can… “ or cousin or friend…. And followed with “…. And they’d love to help!”

Muchos de los residentes nacionales se han mudado a Cabo del Este de otros estados mexicanos por las oportunidades que antes no tenían. Pero muchos tienen una historia familiar que data años atrás. Y los lazos entre todos son fuertes. Es común que cuando se pregunta si se conoce a alguien que pueda ayudar, la respuesta siempre es “¡Sí, mi hermano puede!” O sería un “Mi, primo/amigo y le encantaría ayudar”

Many of the foreign residents, or expats, have come here with a desire to help. It just seems to be common to want to – at the risk of sounding cliché – ‘do some good’. Most of these people are retired and volunteer their time and/or make financial contributions toward this ‘goal of good’.

Muchos de los residentes extranjeros han venido aquí también con el deseo de ayudar. Parece que es algo común el querer –con el riesgo de sonar a cliché- “hacer el bien.” Mucha de esta gente son personas retiradas y dan su tiempo o contribuciones financieras hacia esta “meta de hacer el bien”.

As a result, we have a plethora of giving / non-profit organizations. Some are encompassed by foreign residents, some with Mexican nationals, and yet others a mix of ‘those who are able and willing’, all are community minded and working toward the goal of doing good. Here are some of them: Club Rotario Cabo Este is our local install of Rotary International. The Rotary Club operates our technology center, supports the local health clinic, manages projects for other charities that want to help in the area, and provides assistance for urgent needs such as hurricane relief. Some of the recent projects that the Rotary Club has assisted are: rebuilding the kitchen / cafeteria for the elementary school, rebuilding the baños in the public park, and supporting local albergues (dormitories for the regional schools). The club has recently engaged in a state wide effort to bring healthy drinking water to areas in need. Club Deportivo is the local sports foundation that assists the youth in becoming and staying fit. East Cape Health Center provides emergency services, primary care and specialists to the entire community, while offering special consideration for local children, low income families. East Cape Guild provides educational funding for students beyond the 9th grade as the Mexican government only funds to this grade level. In 2015, the Guild collected over $60,000 and assisted 152 students to attend higher education. The Baja Pony Express is a daily community news website/email with indispensable information!!! Thank you Cheryl and Dave! East Capers Periodical is a wonderful, entertaining, and informative bi-monthly (from October thru May) periodical whose proceeds are used to help bring the Arts to the local youth as part of the East Cape Arts (Asociación de Artes). East Cape Arts (Asociación de Artes) has been “Bringing the Arts to local communities and schools” since 1992.

Algunas la integran residentes extranjeros, otras son mexicanos y hay otras que son una mezcla “de los que quieren y pueden”, todos tienen una mentalidad de dedicación y trabajo hacia la comunidad con la meta de hacer el bien. Aquí algunos ejemplos: Club Rotario Cabo Este es nuestra sede local del Club Rotario Internacional. El Club Rotario opera nuestro centro tecnológico, apoya la clínica de salud, dirige proyectos de caridad, provee asistencia para necesidades urgentes, como en el caso de huracanes. Algunos de los proyectos actuales en los que el Club Rotario ha participado son: reconstruyendo la cocina/cafetería para la escuela primaria, reconstruyendo los baños en el parque y apoyando albergues (dormitorios para las escuelas regionales). El club se unió recientemente al gran esfuerzo para traer agua potable a las áreas que la requieren. Club Deportivo es la base local deportiva que ayuda a los jóvenes a mantenerse en forma. Centro de Salud de Cabo del Este provee servicios de emergencia, cuidado básico y especialistas a toda la comunidad, con especial consideración hacia los niños y familias de bajos ingresos. La Asociación de Cabo del Este provee financiamiento educativo para los estudiantes que han terminado la secundaria, ya que el gobierno mexicano sólo financia hasta ahí. En 2015, la asociación recolectó más de $60,000 y apoyó a 152 estudiantes para que llegaran a un nivel más alto de educación. El The Baja Pony Express es una página de internet/suscripción por correo electrónico de noticias con información indispensable para la comunidad ¡Gracias a Cheryl y a Dave! Periódico East Capers es un maravilloso, entretenido e informativo periódico bimensual (de octubre a mayo) que utiliza sus ganancias para ayudar a traer arte a la juventud local como parte de la Asociación de Artes de Cabo del Este. Asociación de Artes de Cabo del Este ha estado “trayendo el arte a las comunidades locales y escuelas” desde 1992.

Grupo Tortugruero Los Barriles, founded by the two brothers Omar and Noe Araiza 17 years ago, have assisted hundreds of thousands of turtles make their way into the Sea of Cortez. A.L.M.A. Humanitaria, A.C. is the humane society of Los Barriles and surrounding areas dedicated to the well-being of domestic animals through rescue & adoption, vaccination, medical attention, and education programs Baja Kennel Club is the epitome of “you can have a ton of fun while ‘doing good’” as they host Los Barriles Dog Show that resulted last year in over $2,000 being raised for spaying and neutering. BCSPORTSMX A.C. is the Mexico non-profit licensed for the organization of The Lord of the Wind and publications (including this magazine).

I am sometimes asked “Why are people so giving here?” Maybe it’s the combination of a long standing culture that has been based on helping others along with the importation of people who are in second acts of their lives with more times on their hands. Or, maybe it’s just something in the water.

KITEBOARDING IN BAJA Kitesurfing en Baja California Sur

El viento de Baja California Sur era amargo e implacable, yo estaba tratando insatisfactoriamente de tomar el sol. Desistí, empaqué mis cosas y me dirigí a la playa. Ya estando cerca vi algunas personas practicando el kitesurfing. Cuando pregunté por clases, todo el mundo mencionó a Ian, un escocés que practica y enseña aquí en Los Barriles. Era 2004 y el kitesurfing era un deporte nuevo, especialmente en Baja California Sur. Los windsurfistas han venido a Los Barriles desde hace años para disfrutar del ventoso y agitado Mar de Cortés. Ian aprendió kitesurfing en el desfiladero del Río Columbia en 1999, con uno de los creadores del deporte, Cory Roeseler. Cuando regresó a México en 2001, el fue uno de los primeros instructores en el área y Los Barriles rápidamente se convirtió en un destino obligado de kitesurfing.

The consistency of the wind and wide open beaches are the kiteboarders’ dream. And, the proximity of these towns to airports and amenities available in the towns make them attractive to wind seekers and vacationers alike.

La consistencia del viento y las amplias playas son el sueño de todo kitesurfista. Además, la proximidad de estos pueblos a los aeropuertos y sus diversas amenidades los hace atractivo para los buscadores del viento y vacacionistas en general.

Taking Kiteboarding lessons, for me, was life changing. Instantaneously, I was hooked and knew I had to take this ride as far as it would go. Ian and I partnered up to create ExotiKite Kiteboarding, and our school is now one of the largest in Mexico. Learning to kiteboard now is a much different experience than when I learned. Jim Naylor, one of the pioneers Kiteboarding in Los Barriles explains his learning as “No lessons, just a Ken Winter video and then learn from crash and burn.” Now we use radio helmets for our water lessons so the student can get instant feedback from their instructor. The advancement in safety of equipment has been immense, and today students can learn to kiteboard in just 8 hours!

Tomar clases de kitesurfing para mí fue un cambio de vida. Me enganché instantáneamente y supe que tenía que hacerlo hasta donde pudiera llegar. Ian y yo nos hicimos socios y creamos ExotiKite Kiteboarding y nuestra escuela es ahora una de las más grandes en México. Aprender kitesurfing ahora es una experiencia muy diferente a cuando yo aprendí. Jim Nylor, uno de los pioneros en el kitesurfing en Los Barriles, narra su experiencia aprendiendo: “No tuve clases, sólo un video de Ken Winter y después aprendí a golpes.” Ahora usamos cascos con radio para nuestras lecciones en el agua, de esta manera el estudiante puede tener retroalimentación de su instructor en el momento. El avance en seguridad de los equipos ha sido inmenso, ¡Y los estudiantes de ahora pueden aprender en tan sólo 8 horas!

The improvements in the safety of the Kiteboarding equipment and increased knowledge and experience of kiteboarding instructors has made kiteboarding more accessible than ever before. In kiteboarding hotspots like Los Barriles, it has meant an increase in tourism and economic growth. People from all walks of life come here specifically to learn how to kiteboard and with them comes a significant economic input to the community. The local community has also taken an interest in learning to kiteboard. LBKiteboarding is a non-profit, afterschool program in Los Barriles created by myself and Ian. We had talked for a number of years about sharing our joy of kiteboarding while creating a successful way to get local kids into the sport. Learning to kiteboard is a fun and exciting sport, a positive outlet to expend their energy afterschool and is also an avenue to possible employment. Many of our instructors learned in our school.

Gente de todo tipo viene aquí específicamente a aprender, y con ellos llega una entrada económica significativa para la comunidad local, que a su vez ha mostrado interés en aprender. LBKiteboarding es un programa extraescolar sin fines de lucro en Los Barriles creado por mi e Ian. The Baja wind was bitter and relentless, and I was by the pool, trying to sun bathe. I packed up, defeated, and headed for the beach. Turning into the arroyo I saw a few kites in the air. When I asked around about lessons, everyone pointed me toward Ian, a Scottish kiteboarder teaching here in Los Barriles. The year was 2004, and kiteboarding was a new sport, especially in Baja. Windsurfers had been travelling to Los Barriles for years to enjoy the playground of the windy, wavy Sea of Cortez. Ian learned to kiteboard in the Columbia River Gorge in 1999 by one of the creators of the sport, Cory Roeseler. When he came back to Mexico in 2001, Ian was one of the first instructors in the area and Los Barriles quickly became a Kiteboarding destination.

Mientras el crecimiento del kitesurfing va en aumento, la industria continúa progresando con la mejora del equipo. El nuevo desarrollo en kitesurfing es foilboard (hidroplano). El foilboarding utiliza una tabla que tiene un mástil de un metro y unas alas hidro-deslizadoras adjuntas. Mientras se avanza, el mástil eleva la tabla y se flota sobre el agua, lo cual hace que uno lo compare con volar. ExotiKite Kiteboarding también enseña foilboarding en Los Barriles. Utilizamos un sistema progresivo del mástil para que se pueda comenzar con uno corto para gradualmente llegar al mástil más largo, eliminando el factor doloroso de aprender. El foilboarding se ha hecho tan popular que ahora hay competencias en todo el mundo dedicadas únicamente a este estilo.

As the growth in kiteboarders rise, the industry continues to make new progress in equipment. The newest development in kiteboarding is the foilboard. Foilboarding uses a board that has a 1 meter mast and hydrofoil wings attached. As you ride, the mast rises and you float above the water. It has been likened to flying. ExotiKite Kiteboarding teaches foilboarding in Los Barriles. We use a progressive mast system so you start out on a very short mast and graduate to the longer masts, eliminating the “ouch factor” from learning. Foilboarding has become so popular that there are now competitions all over the world devoted just to this style.

In June 2016 an e-mail came in to Baja Sports (the managing entity for Lord of the Wind) from the International Kiteboarding Association’s Markus Schwendtner asking if we would consider being the 2017 IKA Kitefoil and Slalom North American Championship and 2018 Pan American Qualifier - Youth Olympic Games? Lord of the Wind being a YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES QUALIFIER – really!?!? Right away the answer in our heads was “YES – OF COURSE!!

En junio de 2016 llegó un correo electrónico a Baja Sports (la entidad responsable de dirigir Lord of the Wind) de Markus Schwendtner, de IKA (Asociación Internacional de Kitesurf, por sus siglas en inglés) preguntado si quisiéramos ser organizadores del Campeonato Norteamericano IKA Kitefoil y Eslalon 2017, además del Pan Americano 2018 de las eliminatorias de los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud. Lord of the Wind EN LOS JUEGOS OLÍMPICOS DE LA JUVENTUD, ¡¿Es en serio?! Inmediatamente la respuesta fue “¡¡¡SÍ, POR SUPUESTO!!!”

But wait a minute - exactly what does that mean? Not quite as easy as it sounds. So Markus sent us a preliminary budget for holding the “professional” events. We need a crew of 14 paid, sanctioned, professionals to run the event: Technical Director, Race Director, Deputy Race Officer, Assistant Race Officer, and… Holy Cow!!! And the costs are how much?!?!? Let’s just say they are not insignificant…

Un momento, ¿qué significa eso exactamente? No es tan sencillo como parece. Así que Markus nos envió un presupuesto preliminar para llevar a cabo los eventos “profesionales”. Necesitamos un equipo de 14 expertos aprobados para dirigir el evento: Director Técnico, Director de la Carrera, Oficial de Carrera, Asistente de Oficial de Carrera, Director de Jurado, 2 Jueces Internacionales, 2 Jueces Nacionales, Medidor Internacional, 2 Abogados de Marca, Marcador y Anotador… ¡Dios mío! ¿A cuánto ascienden los costos? Digamos que no son insignificantes.

The Lord of the Wind management team have spent the entire summer not only getting ready for 2017 LORD OF THE WIND but working with Markus and the IKA, trying to make all this happen. At this very moment, the plan is that 2017 Lord of the Wind will be run as close to an IKA North American Championship as possible with the oversite of an IKA official. It will be a “dress rehearsal” to get it right for the 2018 Youth Olympic Qualifier in January 2018 - maybe. But we aren’t done yet. In the agreement that we are working out with the IKA, we must raise enough sponsorship funds by April 15, 2017 to cover the increased costs in order to accommodate the Youth Olympic Games Qualifying event. If we do not succeed at raising the funds by this time we lose the right to have the Youth Olympic Games Qualifier here in sunny Los Barriles. The 2018 LORD OF THE WIND will happen. We are just trying to make it happen as the YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES QUALIFIER. How fun would that be? So sponsors, step right up!

Freestyle has always been one of the most dynamic aspect of Kiteboarding. With the power of the kite, we are able to defy gravity with acrobatic feats unparalleled in any other sport driven by nature.

El estilo libre siempre ha sido uno de los aspectos más dinámicos de Kiteboarding. Con la fuerza del parapente (kite), somos capaces de desafiar la gravedad con acrobacias sin precedentes ni comparación alguna en cualquier otro deporte impulsado por la naturaleza.

For years the freestyle criteria has remained consistent with athletes all riding similar wakeboard style twin tip boards with either boots or strap bindings. It is only in the last couple of years that two new exciting genres of freestyle have come on the scene; Strapless Freestyle and Hydrofoil Freestyle.

Hydrofoil Freestyle has recently emerged from the popularity of hydrofoil racing. With the blazing efficiency of the new foils, kiters are now able to soar to new heights, and execute monster moves. The tricks need to be high, since the hydrofoil is already submerged under water about three feet, and the moves must be spot on as the foil is both heavy and dangerously, razor sharp.

Estilo Libre Hidroplano recientemente emergió gracias a la popularidad de carreras con hidroplano. Strapless Freestyle comes from the foundation of kite surfing, or the act of riding waves with a traditional surfboard. To execute airs, spins and flips on a traditional surfboard without straps requires both physics and precise kite flying. At all times, the wind tries to rip the board away. To see someone flying through the air without straps, is nothing short of mind boggling.

Estilo libre sin correas fijas viene desde la fundación del kitesurf, o el acto de montar las olas con una tabla de surf tradicional. Do I need to speak Spanish to get along? I am not going to lie, speaking basic Spanish will make it easier on you, but it is not a must. Many locals speak basic English and are very supportive, they will help you in any way they can. Before arriving in La Paz, from the road stands an imposing tower smokestack affectionately called “Ramona”. She is the charming signal that attracts the gaze of hundreds of visitors to the small town of El Triunfo. Long before it was home to a glorious mining town that became the región`s most important city for its rich gold deposits. Ramona was an original design of the famous Gustave Eiffel designed for the mining company El Progreso.

At only 106 kilometers north of the state, is its capital, La Paz. A quiet town set around a bay of calm waters and spectacular sunsets. In La Paz, are located several of the most famous beaches of Mexico, classified by visitors and magazine alike as some of the best in the world. One example being Balandra, home of the mushroom rock formation, and symbol of the city, which was named by USA Today as the best beach of Mexico and is definitely a visit that should not be overlooked as it is an ideal and magical snorkeling and kayaking spot for the whole family.

Swimming with the magnificent whale shark is another must-see attraction if you visit La Paz, and doing so shall be an unforgettable experience. Facing the bay, near the famous Mogote, is found an abundant food source of this noble and giant mammal, the very reason that for many years now it is quite common to find a multitude of them and be able swim or snorkel placidly alonside them.

Finally, the jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the insular complex Espiritu Santo, declared by UNESCO a Natural Heritage World Site and Natural Protected Area. This earthly and underwater paradise is located just 25 kilometers offshore from the bay and is considered one of the places containing most abundant of marine wealth. Here, you can snorkel or even swim with sea lions like nowhere else on the planet. Hanging out alongside this kind creature is truly unique. It is suggested to always be accompanied by professional guides and authorized operators. After swimming with cubs, you can rest on one of the quasi-virgin turquoise toned waters and soft white sands of the pristine beaches.

Finalmente, la joya de la corona es sin duda el complejo insular Espíritu Santo, declarada por la UNESCO Patrimonio Natural Mundial de la Humanidad y Área Natural Protegida. Este paraíso terrenal y submarino se encuentra a sólo 25 kilómetros mar adentro de la bahía y es considerado uno de los lugares con mayor riqueza marina. Ahí, es posible bucear o nadar con lobos marinos como en ningún otro lugar del planeta. La convivencia con el simpático animal es única. Se sugiere siempre ir acompañados de guías profesionales y operadores autorizados. Tras el nado con lobeznos, se puede descansar en playas cuasi vírgenes de aguas cristalinas en tonos turquesa con blanca y suave arena.

Cabo Pulmo is one of Baja California Sur`s best kept secrets. A paradise for divers from around the world that boast the most stunning coral reef in North America. In addition, the natural park of Cabo Pulmo has one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. on these waters. Our focus was on viewing wildlife, safe yet adventurous paddling for our diverse group, and yet still managing ample time to relax on the sunny beaches and enjoy the spirited Baja hospitality.

Each morning began with the anglers in our group heading off on a skiff with knowledgeable, Baja born and bred guides. Some days they fished and some days they caught. Perico, trigger fish, yellowtail, and more graced our plates each night. Locally sourced avocados, citrus, and vegetables, along with hand- made tortillas made for the finest of beach-side dining. Of particular note were the tasty margaritas after a day in the sun. The islands which comprise the Espiritu Santos Archipelago have mystical names bespeaking their Iberian heritage. Isla Dazante, Carmen, Monserrate, Isla Santa Catalan among others are strung along the coastline like pearls on a woman’s necklace. We visited these islands, sleeping, eating, and relaxing on their pristine beaches. Our well versed guides entertained us identifying the local flora and fauna, much of it endemic to these islands.

Our days were nicely balanced between activity and relaxation. Each guest chose what was best for them and the guides provided us all with challenges, support, and a wealth of opportunity. We swam with sea lions one day and immature whale sharks, nearly 20’ long, the next! The coastal rock gardens showcased a world of colorful fish, sponges, bivalves, and more. Each evening, special beaches, and spectacular sunsets were all our own. As the endless stars and planets came into view, 9 PM quickly became our “Baja-Midnight”. So when your good friend asks you if you want to explore Baja California Sur , the only answer must be a resounding YES – IT IS FABULOUS!!!

Baja Sur’s eastern coastline is an area of remote rugged beauty and porcelain clear waters. A fabulous sea kayaking adventure winds its way from the historic mission city of Loreto through several National Parks to the bustling, energetic port of La Paz.

La costa de Baja California Sur es un área remota, de indómita belleza y agua cristalina. Se puede realizar una fabulosa aventura acuática en kayaks desde la ciudad histórica de Loreto, a través de varios parques marítimos nacionales, hasta el bullicioso y lleno de energía puerto de La Paz.

Our story began 6 months ago when friends from the States approached us asking if we wanted to paddle this route. Sitting in my favorite chair at the time I thought to myself, “my god, that is a long way”. A second thought of, “that would be spectacular” also quickly came to mind.

Nuestra historia comenzó hace 6 meses, cuando unos amigos americanos nos preguntaron si queríamos remar esta ruta. Yo estando sentado en mi silla favorita pensé “Dios mío, es un viaje largo”. Un segundo pensamiento pronto vino a mi mente: “¡Este viaje será espectacular!”

Local tour operator, Mar y Aventuras (see advertisement page 33) had several tours through this region for us to chose from. We have used them previously for shorter kayak/camping trips and felt confident in their organization. A choice of autumn or spring departures was available. Additionally, itineraries with varying degrees of difficulty were offered.

Hemos contratado sus servicios previamente en viajes cortos para acampar y remar, lo cual nos dio más confianza en su desempeño. Había opciones de salida para otoño o primavera, además, se ofrecían itinerarios con diferente grado de dificultad.

After a few months of preparation our 8 day kayak trip was underway! Our friendly, English speaking guides had many decades of experience

Después de algunos meses de preparación, nuestro viaje de 8 días en kayak estaba listo para partir. Nuestros guías eran amistosos, hablaban inglés y ya tenían muchas décadas de experiencia en estas aguas. Nuestro enfoque era ver la fauna, disfrutáramos de la aventura sin riesgo para nuestro grupo tan diverso y aun así, tener tiempo suficiente para relajarnos en las playas soleadas y recrearnos con la hospitalidad de Baja. Cada mañana comenzaba con los pescadores del grupo, guiados por los expertos guías locales, quienes partían a probar suerte. Pescaban Perico, Pez Ballesta, Jurel y más, los cuales llenaban nuestros platos cada noche. Las cenas en la playa fueron aún mejor por tener aguacates, frutos cítricos y verduras nativas de la zona, acompañados por tortillas hechas a mano. Un detalle especial fueron las ricas margaritas que nos tomábamos después de un largo día de sol. Las islas que son parte del archipiélago del Espíritu Santo tienen nombres místicos que se derivan de su herencia Ibérica. Las islas Danzante, Carmen, Monserrate, Santa Catalán entre otras, están localizadas a lo largo de la costa, como un hermoso collar de perlas. Visitamos estas islas, durmiendo, comiendo y relajándonos en estas bellísimas playas. Nuestros guías tan conocedores de las áreas, nos entretuvieron identificando la flora y fauna local, la mayoría de las cuales son endémicas de ahí. Nuestros días estuvieron muy bien balanceados entre actividad y relajación. Cada participante decidía cuál era su preferencia personal y los guías nos proporcionaban retos, apoyo y gran cantidad de actividades para hacer. Un día nadamos con lobos marinos, y otro día con tiburón ballena jóvenes, de casi de 60 metros de largo. Los jardines rocosos de la costa presentaban un mundo de peces de todos colores, esponjas, bivalvos y más. Cada tarde, las hermosas playas y sus atardeceres espectaculares, eran sólo para nosotros. Mientras las interminables estrellas y planetas aparecían en el cielo cada noche, las 9 PM pronto se convirtió en nuestra “Medianoche en Baja”. Así que cuando tus amigos te pregunten si quieres explorar Baja California Sur, la única respuesta que existe es SI - ¡ES UNA AVENTURA FABULOSA!
