Lord Wandsworth College Our First 100 Years
Our History Lord Wandsworth College is named after Baron Sydney Stern, a Liberal MP, who was granted a peerage and took the title of Lord Wandsworth. When Lord Wandsworth died in 1912 he left a generous bequest to educate the children of agricultural workers; children who had lost one or both parents and needed the support of a boarding environment.
Lord Wandsworth’s Trustees purchased the site on which the College now stands and the first ‘Foundationers’ arrived in 1922, followed by fee-paying students in 1946. November 2022 marks 100 years since, Alfred Beckwith (Pupil No 1) walked through the Acorn Gates here at LWC and brought Sydney Stern’s amazing Legacy to life. The Foundation remains at the heart of the College today and has had such a positive impact on so many lives with over 2,500 Foundationers having walked through those same gates during our first 100 years.

The Beckwith is a 5k/10k run or a walk around the LWC estate. Our Sternians (Alumni) will have memories of running up to Quercus, an Oak Tree in Sheephouse Copse on a regular basis, taking in the amazing views around our stunning estate. We have wanted to give the whole LWC community the opportunity to follow in their footsteps and explore our wider campus for some time. The Beckwith, and our Centenary year, seemed the perfect opportunity to do this! It will be a wonderful occasion with pupils, Sternians, parents, staff, governors and friends all running, or walking, together and enjoying LWC’s incredible 1200 acres. The entire family are welcome to join us (even the dog – on a lead please!). Choose from the 5k or 10k route, and for those competitive runners amongst us there is the option to log your race times and be in with a chance to be the first name on our Beckwith leader-board.
There will be plenty of delicious food and drinks available to purchase before and after you have completed The Beckwith, from bacon sandwiches and pastries when you arrive to pizza and burgers etc. for lunch afterwards.
Trek The Sahara 23rd-28th February 2023 Join us on an Adventure! Are you ready for an adventure of a lifetime? Do you want to take part in a challenge that will help raise vital funds for The Foundation? Join other LWC parents and Sternians (you must be 21+ to take part) as we trek across the Sahara Desert. Our Adventure Challenge is a fourday trek (the trip is 6 days in total) through this stunning terrain, climbing to the top of the massive Chegaga Dunes, where we will witness the desert sunrise. With camels to guide us through the ever-changing landscape we will visit the nomads’ encampment and sleep under the stars.
