TEACHING IDEAS FOR U SING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

The Collaboration issue. This issue is all about ways that you can create lessons that allow your students to work together on tasks. This can be using web tools as well as some of the basic tools you already have.

Using One Note Microsoft’s One Note comes with your Office package and is an invaluable tool for organizing and then sharing your ideas. You create notebooks with tabs and pages that you can then allow others to work on with you. Using the ‘Share’tab on the toolbar allows you to decide who to share with. You can invite users by email if your file is on a network or you can create One Note files to share on your Windows Live account (free to anyone with Hotmail) and then share over the web. The beauty of this program is in its simplicity. It looks just like a binder and the tabs allow you to organize your material into

logical sequence. You can add in screen clippings from the web pages you are viewing, add in documents and files and even write on the pages if you have a tablet computer. In class these could be used for units of work and projects and each user can then add in their own contributions. You can also add in sound files such as brief notes or podcasts and you can drop in links and videos from the web. Essentially it’s a giant folder that you can share with others.

Collaborative Prezi If you want to collaborate on presentations then Prezi is a free option that you might like. This ‘zooming’ presentation editor allows multiple users to work together on a presentation. This frees them from the constraints of time seen in most group work as students can work whenever they are free and wherever they are as long as they have an internet connection. They are simple to create and the site contains tutorials for novices. See http://www.prezi.com for more information.

Using Google tools in the Classroom.

Google tools are a great way to share your documents with students– free yourself from the tyranny of email!

Google is not just a search engine. It has an amazing array of tools that teachers find make life easier when it comes to sharing files and folders. Anyone with a gmail account has access to Google Docs, Sites, Calendar and more. These are being used by teachers all over the world and there are many blog entries and wikis dedicated to showing the features and lots of how to videos on You Tube.

Share your ideas: It would be great to have teachers sharing some of their experiences with e-learning in this newsletter. If you would like to write a short overview or would like to be interviewed for the newsletter please contact me lrl@mentonegrammar.net and I will include you in the next newsletter. I aim to get one of these out per term for your reference. I hope you have enjoyed this issue. Louise Robinson-Lay
